Don’t Lose Your First Love “I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Therefore remember from where you have fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first.” – Revelation 2: 4-5

ockdown has forced us all to become accepting of change. During lockdown, most Christians have been logging onto online church services on Sundays, and possibly also their home groups during the week. ‘Doing church’ remotely has become the new norm. Sharing communion online was a first for many of us, and singing by one’s self has become acceptable and comfortable. Now, after a few months, many of us have gotten into the habit of enjoying Church like this.

Will this become the new norm? The problem with this convenience though is that it may become permanent for many believers. I have heard it said that churches are going to struggle to get folks back to the physical churches when the restrictions are lifted. Many have gotten comfortable, and perhaps lazy, with this new way of doing church. The idea of getting up early, dressing up, and driving to church on a cold, winter’s morning will suddenly have no appeal. Sadly, many churches will face this dilemma and thus may struggle with their finances as well. It has been reported that giving, for many churches, has significantly decreased since going online.

Jesus instated the church We are commanded to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength – and that means being obedient to His commands. We are warned not to forsake the gathering of the saints, as there is an anointing, a blessing, that takes place when we gather together. We must all be careful to guard our hearts and not lose our first love. Jesus is the head of the Church, and it was His idea to form the Church for the benefit of the saints. We need to maintain the rich relationships that have been formed in the church and continue to love and serve one another. We must not become like the church in Ephesus that grew cold and fell victim to the culture around it.

Do not neglect the gathering of the saints Although we know that God called us to be the church, and we know that the brick and mortar walls of the buildings are not reflective of our hearts, the physical church is vital in our walk with Christ. Jesus was intentional when He expressed the importance of attending. Church is where we learn, it is where we are prayed for and encouraged to grow in Christlikeness. It’s where we are encouraged to develop an all-consuming love for Jesus. Jesus loves His Church and is coming back for His Church. Be ready.

God bless you,

Editor

FOUNDATIONAL TEACHING

Introduction to basic

T

he dictionary defines a religion as “the service and worship of God or the supernatural.” So, Christianity is obviously a religion. But what makes it different to any other religion? If the only thing separating it from other religions is a set of unique rituals, or a collection of unique buildings where Christians meet, then Christianity really does not have anything to commend itself at all. What then makes Christianity what it is, and why has it changed the lives of billions of people throughout the centuries? The answer is that Christianity is defined by its unique message. This message is called “the Gospel.” It is the good news that although all people are guilty of sinning and stand justly condemned, God – in His great love – became a man in Jesus Christ, fulfilling Jewish prophecy. On our behalf, He lived a perfect, sinless life. He then suffered the punishment for our sin through His death on the Cross, reconciling us to God. Three days later He rose from the dead, victorious over sin and death. God has ordained Him to be the judge of the living and the dead, and commands all people to repent and believe in Jesus for the forgiveness of their sins.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16

THE TWO GREAT BARRIERS BETWEEN GOD AND MAN

I

f you have read our last few articles, you’ll remember that I said that all people know that there is a God. God has revealed Himself generally to all people through the witness of creation (from the outside), and conscience (from the inside). But then why does it seem so hard to truly know God?

Why does God often seem so distant to us and our suffering-filled world?

The Bible gives us two reasons: Our finitude and our sin. First, the problem of our finitude. The Bible says that God’s greatness is unsearchable (Psa 145:3), that He is almighty in power, and that His understanding is infinite (Psa 147:5). This is why the men of the Bible said things like: “Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgements and His ways past finding out!" – Romans 11:33. "Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is high, I cannot attain it" – Psalm 139:6. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are His ways higher than our ways, and His thoughts than our thoughts." – Isaiah 55:8-9

The huge problem of sin

Our finitude is a barrier. But then there is an even bigger problem: our sin. God is holy, but man is sinful. This is very serious. The Bible says that: “Your iniquities have separated you from your God; and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear” – Isaiah 59:2. God takes our sin seriously: our failure to worship Him, our blasphemy of His Name, our dishonouring of our parents, our sexual promiscuity, our idolatry, our stealing and lying, and our daily ingratitude for the good that He does for us. Our sin has separated every one of us from Him. "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” – Romans 3:23

God has made a way for us

Our finitude and sin mean that we are completely without strength, we are “dead in our trespasses and sins” – Ephesians 2:1. And yet, how wonderful the news that God has made a way for us to know Him. The Gospel message says this: “For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly” – Romans 5:6. Though we are “without strength” and “ungodly,” God has made a way for us to know Him through His Son Jesus Christ.

Best issue of JOY ever Your Easter issue was so powerful. I was drawn to the cover immediately, and reading through the magazine was such a blessing. This has to be the best issue of JOY Magazine that I have ever read. I shared my copy, reluctantly, with a friend whose mom was dying. She was so moved by the articles (I don’t think she has ever seen JOY before) and then she shared it with her mom. She says her mom was so grateful and loved reading it. Thank you for all the careful effort that goes into your magazine. It is such a great publication to have in one’s home. I love the fact that it doesn’t date either. I also think that they are wonderful evangelism tools. We all need to be sharing the Gospel, but it is not always that easy to articulate. Sharing the magazine does a fine job. May

Our future is in our hearts I read in your April issue that one of the reasons why we need to accept Christ is that we need a future. I had never thought about this, but this statement is so true. Most people think they are going to heaven, but if you ask them about heaven – they can’t tell you anything – they are clueless. Most also believe that because they have never killed or harmed anyone, or because they don’t steal, these are the reasons that they will get to heaven. Jesus has placed eternity into the heart of every human being. But they need to understand what they have to do to get there. Believe in Jesus Christ and make Him your Lord! K Mobewange

Thank you Jesus that I can just be me, although perhaps I should check more before I bark!

A lot of people are asking why the world is the way it is. What’s going on? What on earth is God doing? Most of these people have never considered God before, but are questioning now that there is this terrible international crisis that is killing thousands daily across the world. At times like these, one can be tempted to doubt the love of God, when actually, an assurance of how much God does love us is what we need to carry us through this time. Whenever we are tempted to doubt God’s love, we should read John 17 slowly, listen to God talking, and thank Him for including us in the story of His glory. The glory of God is the display of His excellence. Jesus not only prayed for Himself, but also for His apostles and then for those of us who would believe in Him. The story of glory will go on forever. One day we will personally behold the glory of our Saviour, see the display of His excellence, and join the heavenly community of the family of God. My Arnie (Aunty Trish) says that some people wear masks anyway, not just now during this pandemic. They are not like the material ones that humans are wearing now, but a special ‘face’ to fit the occasion, maybe to conceal things about themselves or hide their true feelings, to present the best image in an effort to be accepted. But God sees everything, and maybe they should ask Him to release them of the stress of trying to be who they are not.

God is not moved by time This whole virus crisis is really disruptive and frustrating. It messed up all our plans for the year regarding our conferences and seminars. We had such big plans to share the Gospel through these meetings. Anyway, we know that all things work for the good for those who love Jesus – so we wait, and trust in Him to sort out this horrible sickness. We know that those who would have gotten saved at these meetings will still get saved – God is not moved by time, but by faith. We have the faith to believe that things may need to get so bad before people will consider surrendering their lives to Jesus. Thank you for always providing us with magazines for our ladies’ days – I know the ladies are grateful and treasure them. The Gospel goes out regardless. Love and prayers to your team. Brenda Jones

Seeking advice: What should I do? My son and his girlfriend are coming to visit us in the holidays (they may be about to tell us that they are getting engaged), but she is not a born-again Christian and he is. I am very sad about this, but I am not sure if I must bring it up with them or just talk to him privately. I don’t want him to lose his faith as so much went into him as a boy – my husband and I have always tried to be a good example to him. Sadly I don’t get many opportunities to chat to him and I don’t want to spoil the joy of the weekend. I am interested to hear how other families have handled this situation. Concerned Mom

The Old Testament is important I thoroughly enjoy your Messianic Jewish articles that you print from time to time. More and more Jews are turning to Jesus and more and more Christians are learning to embrace their teachings. There is so much depth in them. A

s we celebrate Mother’s Day this month, we’ll take a look at a Biblical character who benefitted greatly from the faith of two important women in his life, his mother and grandmother.

Timothy’s background Possibly a convert to Christ during Paul’s first missionary journey when he passed through Timothy’s hometown of Lystra (Acts 14:6), Timothy was a young convert by the time Paul visited the region again during his second missionary journey (Acts 16:1). Timothy came from a family where his Jewish mother and grandmother had converted to Christianity; his father was Greek (Acts 16:1; 2 Tim 1:5). This lineage

later gave Timothy access to both Jewish and Greek cultures during his ministry. He was even willing to get circumcised in order to not offend Jewish converts (Acts 16:3).

His mentor Paul The relationship between Paul and Timothy was like a father and son (Phil 2:22; 1 Tim 1:2). Prophetic words had been spoken about Timothy, perhaps relating to his ministry (1 Tim 1:18; 4:14), and he received a spiritual gift when Paul laid hands on him (2 Tim 1:6). Timothy must have been fairly young when he first became a believer, especially if Paul called him young some ten to fifteen years later while Timothy ministered in Ephesus (1 Tim 4:12). This may also explain why Timothy was somewhat timid and shy (2 Tim 1:7-8).

What can we learn from Timothy? Go to any typical church and ask people when they came to faith in Christ. You’ll find that the vast majority of them did so in their childhood. Raising children in a Christian home remains the best way to make disciples for Jesus. It is vital that Christian parents raise their children “in the training and admonition of the Lord” – Ephesians 6:4. Timothy had a mother and grandmother who modelled faith in Jesus. Paul says the Christian faith “dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice” – 2 Timothy 1:5. Godly women were instrumental in raising up what would be one of the chief leaders of the early church. Women are capable of doing the same today, teaching and training children to live their lives for Christ.

The early church historian Eusebius reports that Timothy was the first bishop of Ephesus. The city was the most important city in Asia Minor (modern Turkey) and one of the foremost urban centres of the Roman Empire. It was situated at the intersection of major trade routes making it an important commercial hub. Because it was on a river, it had a busy harbour that made it a key shipping port. It was also home to the Temple of Artemis (also known as Diana), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and was at the heart of paganism in Asia Minor. Witchcraft, necromancy, and magic arts were commonplace (see Acts 19). Ephesus minted on its coins “servant of the great goddess.” Church history records that during the reign of the emperor Domitian (AD 81-96), Timothy was martyred for his faith when the 80-year-old bishop tried to preach the Gospel during a procession for the goddess Diana. He was beaten to death by pagan worshippers.

Dependability matters Dependability is something you want in a Christian disciple, and Timothy had it. Dependability isn’t something you learn overnight. It takes years to develop, and the best time to start is when your children are young. Teaching them to be responsible for their own actions, to be hardworking and dedicated, and to reliably serve others goes a long way once they profess faith in Jesus. Despite his youth, Timothy impressed Paul. He said no one was like-minded like him (Phil 2:19-20). The Apostle says more in his letters about Timothy than any other ministry partner, and for over a decade they ministered together.

• As Paul discipled Timothy, so Timothy discipled others (2 Tim 2:2). Timothy was willing to do whatever was necessary for the sake of the Gospel.

Teach your children God’s Word

We read in the Bible that Timothy learned God’s Word from an early age. “From childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” – 2 Timothy 3:15 Mothers play a vital role in raising their children to become godly men and women. The examples of Lois and Eunice testify to this, and Timothy was willing to do from their godly example they raised a whatever was necessary man who for decades admirably served • He accompanied Paul during his for the sake of the Gospel. Christ, even to the point of giving his life second missionary journey (Acts for his faith in Jesus. 16:2-4) and again during his third (Acts 19:22). • He often served as Paul’s envoy, for example, being sent Train your kids to Corinth (1 Cor 4:17), Thessalonica (1 Thes 3:2, 5), and Teach the Bible to your children. Read it to them daily. Train Ephesus (1 Tim 1:3-4). them to read it for themselves. Let them learn about the faith • He was willing to ‘get his hands dirty,’ coming to Corinth of people who have gone before them, men and women who and helping Paul with his tent-making so Paul could devote dedicated their lives to God. As Paul tells Timothy, “All Scripture his time fully to preaching the Gospel (Acts 18:5). is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for • Timothy is mentioned as Paul’s co-author in nearly half of reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the his New Testament letters: 2 Corinthians man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every (2 Cor 1:1), Philippians (Phil 1:1), Colossians (Col 1:1), good work.” – 2 Timothy 3:16-17  1 and 2 Thessalonians (1 Thes 1:1; 2 Thes 1:1), and Philemon (Philem 1). CSE sex education in SA schools We support Errol Naidoo’s stance on the subject of CSE in South African schools, as well as other topics in general. Personally, I have repeatedly said the same things. My opinion is that God has not been pleased with many nations; by their leadership, political approach, methods, and beliefs over their people. Looking at the ‘sex education’ CSE programme for our schools, as well as the lack of financial accountability (relating to corruption of government funds) it is of grave concern! The leadership and management of a nation always revolves around the care towards its people, including equality, impartiality, and being ‘no respecter’ of persons (including race). The beauty of different races is God’s heart and love to humanity. South Africa and

the world can be a better place by simply respecting each race and culture! Another aspect that God is not pleased with is what laws nations place, those that outright contradict God’s laws. Many people throughout the world have suffered because of governments allowing corruption and poor reasoning within management. Especially within the leadership of a nation, concerning poor financial management at the cost of the poor or its people as a whole, generally speaking. “Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither oppress the afflicted in the gate: For the Lord will plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them.” – Proverbs: 22:22-23, KJV My personal belief is that South Africa is a beautiful country with much to offer in many ways to its people and the world. For example, our riches are of a numerous diversity, looking at our size and population! South Africa can still become one of the wealthiest nations. It is a nation that could be a true ‘light’ and lamp (Christ the light) and leader unto the world! With the amount of believers, uniting together, it is possible to gain God’s favour, to bring healthy change. Because of its believers, South Africa has been held gracefully by God! Yet, we can do much better and be a true answer to the world. Pastors Charles and MC Garner

I thought your readers may enjoy this short story: A man went to his father and said: “Father, I can’t take it anymore, my wife is driving me insane! I want to kill her, but I’m afraid someone might find out I did it. Please help me?” The father replied: “Yes I can help you, but there’s a but – you’re going to have to make amends with her so that no one would suspect that it was you when she dies. You’ll have to take very good care of her, be kind, grateful, patient, caring, less selfish, listen more, and help her

with chores. You see this powder here? Every day you have to put a little in her food. When she eats it she will die slowly.” Thirty days had passed and the son came back and said to his father: “I don’t want her to die! I have come to love her. And now, how do I cut the effect of the poison?” Then the father said: “Don’t worry! What I gave you was rice powder. She’s not going to die, because the poison was in you!” When we feed grudges, our love slowly dies. When we make peace with ourselves and with those who have offended us, then we can deal with the other as we would like to be treated. Then, we will have the initiative to love, to give, to offer, to serve, to care for, and not just have the need to win, to be served, or to take advantage of and exploit the other. We all need to stop, pray, and ask for that antidote called forgiveness. AC

United Nations – Human Rights or Human Wrongs?

The Real UN Agenda

The UN and prostitution

recently released dossier that former senior United Nations official Andrew Macleod handed over to DFID Secretary Priti Patel last year, it was found that there are 3300 paedophiles employed in UN and further that UN employees carried out 60 000 rapes in the last decade. How does an organisation that was set up to protect the vulnerable and disadvantaged become the “poster child” for sexual violations and abuse? How are we to believe that this is the organisation that has our children’s best interest at heart? This is clearly an organisation that is only interested in sexualising our children and driving an agenda to drive a wedge between parents and their children and take over parental responsibility.

The latest agenda that the UN is currently The UN and religion How does an organisation pushing involves redefining prostitution In the latest news, the Centre for Family and calling it “sex work” in a bid to legalise and Human Rights reports that a “special that was set up to protect and continue their journey to license expert on freedom of religion” – the the vulnerable and immorality, sexualise nations, and break UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of disadvantaged become the up the family unit and cause it to be more Religion or Belief – is now pushing for the “poster child” for sexual dysfunctional. he United Nations has, for many years, presented itself as an organisation that stands for good principles, ethical behaviour, and human rights. Nothing could be further from the truth. Whereas previously human rights included the right to life and basic rights of liberty and freedom, it is no longer the case. Over the years, the UN has increasingly pushed its own sinister global agenda to a point where they now claim that the right to kill is a human right (abortion). Human rights have therefore evolved over the years from protecting the right to life, to now protecting the right to murder (intentional act of killing).

INSIGHTS FROM THE JOY! TEAM What does it mean to be of Good Cheer?

I

f Covid-19 has taught us anything, it is to live out our Christianity through actions and not just to quote Scriptures that ‘sound good’ or use watered-down verses as motivational slogans. Meditating on the idea of being cheerful, I found myself challenged by Scriptures like John 16:33, Matthew 9:2, Matthew 9:22, and Matthew 14:27 (please go read them in the NKJV). What does it mean to be of good cheer? Is this the same idea that we often hear about to “fake it ‘til you make it,” – hoping that we will trick ourselves and those around us into eternal happiness? Is being of good cheer a mindset? Or an attitude?

Take courage, our faith is in Jesus In the original Scriptures, the word for good cheer also means to “take courage.” Whenever Jesus spoke this instruction in the Bible, it was in situations where people were experiencing difficulties or when doubt crept in to their hearts because of their trying circumstances. This reiterates that we are not exempt from tough times – however we can live in a state of cheerfulness and take courage. So how do we live in good cheer? Is it even possible? 2 Corinthians 5:5-8 in the Message translation reads, “He puts a little of Heaven in our hearts so that we’ll never settle for less. That’s why we live with such good cheer. You won’t see us drooping our heads or dragging our feet! Cramped conditions here don’t get us down … It’s what we trust in but don’t yet see, that keeps us going.”

Actionable steps to be of good cheer Here are four tips to be of good cheer: 1 – Place your eyes on the One who gives real peace. 2 – Remember that your trials are temporary and that Heaven is our reward. 3 – Keep your head up and do not let your feet drag when things get tough. 4 – Build your faith. If we can follow these steps, we will be of good cheer no matter the circumstance!  GAWIE DE LANGE is the General Manager of JOY! Magazine. Email him on gawie@joymag.co.za

Type 1 Diabetes – why me?

G

rowing up as a little girl, I had a really wonderful childhood. When I was 11 years old, however, I went to the doctor because I was feeling horrible. I was diagnosed with diabetes and rushed to the ICU. I did not understand what was going on. It felt like my whole world was crashing around me. The doctors explained to me that I was not “normal”, and that I would require insulin injections multiple times each day for the rest of my life. “Why me?” I asked myself. I spent the following years struggling with my diabetes, often feeling alone, never talking to anyone about it, ending up in a coma in the ER, and often feeling like a victim.

I am not a victim. This is an opportunity After many years and tears I realised, “Why Me” shouldn’t mean “Why am I so unlucky”, but “Why did God specifically choose ME? What is His will? What is His purpose through this? How can He use me for His goodness? How can I make myself available? How can my own experiences help others?

And here I am today Today, I am a healthy, positive, confident type 1 diabetic who is more than happy to share my story and to offer insights to others who may be struggling. I have accepted my diagnosis, and I have overcome it. I am no longer simply surviving, but thriving. If you know anyone who has a recent type 1 diagnosis, I will gladly chat to them and offer my time. With conditions like diabetes, talking to a doctor is not the same as talking to someone who understands exactly what you are going through. It is the support that builds us, that strengthens us.  GILLIAN FRASER is the Production Manager of JOY! Magazine. Email gillian@joymag.co.za

TESTIMONY

Man’s disappointment, God’s appointment

—by Sophia Roman

I

t was Monday evening, 23 March, 2020. The entire nation was sitting in deep suspense, waiting for an urgent broadcast from our President, Cyril Ramaphosa. No one wanted to miss this all important announcement. The wait was long, eventually the President spoke: “My fellow South Africans…” It felt like lightning ran down my spine. The feeling of uncertainty, the sense of fear, anxiety, and insecurity. Covid-19 invaded our lives and interrupted planning for every South African, and the world as a whole.

And so it was for Osnofla

Pastor Owen Hendricks, founder of Jesus the Healer Outreach, lives with his family in Mitchells Plain. At the beginning of lockdown, he sensed in his street the fear of the unknown, uncertainty, and panic. He could sense the feeling of insecurity and depression sparked by Covid-19. “I cannot allow it,” he told himself. Nudged and prompted by the Holy Spirit, he submitted in obedience. Pastor Owen took his public amplifier outside of his gate. He started to sing songs of hope and the air began to be filled with optimism and life. The sound was so loud that over 100 homes could hear him clearly. Soon, one by “And we know that all one, people came out of their homes and things work together for moved to their gates. Not long after they good to those who love God, brought their chairs and children and listened to those who are the called to anointed music. His neighbour brought according to His purpose” his guitar and microphone and a formidable worship team was formed. – Romans 8:28

The President announced a lockdown for 21 days, starting from midnight 26 March. It was at this point when Osnofla recalled his miracle. He is working as a stage builder for a local filming team. It has been a dream of his to work for an international filming company. Four years ago he applied for a job in a first world country. The last three years were a screening process. 400 candidates applied for the same job, and only 4 were shortlisted and selected. Osnofla remembers the mixed emotions of thrill, pride, excitement, and tension as he got the news that he had been selected for the job. A better lifestyle was awaiting his family. He would leave on 26 March 2020. The President made it clear that all international flights to and from South Africa would be cancelled and all visas revoked. This announcement was two days before Osnofla received his visa and air ticket to leave to start his exciting career. He was deeply disappointed and speechless! He was so ready for this trip. His visa and passport were all in order. He did not know what the future held. Pastor Owen Hendricks

Reaching out to the community

The presence of God filled the streets People everywhere flocked to their gates. Many joined in singing and worshipping. Pastor Owen then preached a message of hope and made an altar call for those who would want to accept Jesus as their personal Lord and Saviour. People everywhere raised their hands and prayed the sinner’s prayer. One of those indicating to receive the Lord was Osnofla.

Osnofla’s life was changed forever He speaks with great joy of his new relationship with God. He understands why his trip was delayed. His appointment was not to start a new job at this given time, but instead to start a new life in Christ. God visited their home. His wife has a new husband and his son has a new father. The power of the Gospel preached in simplicity reaped a harvest of several homes in the street where Pastor Owen lives. The good news is not over! As soon as international flights operate, Osnofla will be leaving to fulfil his passion and dream as a new creation in Christ. To God be the glory! 

Now is the time to

RISE UP

“What shall we do to these men? For, indeed, that a notable miracle has been done through them is evident to all who dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.” – Acts 4:16

T

he passage above shares the wonderful account of a lame man being healed at the Beautiful Gate where Peter and John had gone to pray. As a result, Peter and John were being persecuted by the Sanhedrin, who were trying to shut down the preaching of the Gospel. The Sanhedrin were unable in their efforts, namely because of the undeniable evidence and miracles that had taken place. Everyone could see the Hand of God, which resulted in five thousand people been added to the Kingdom of God.

Do not keep silent! We have been going through major challenges, but God has been faithful. As the Body of Christ, our testimony of the goodness of God is undeniable. It is indeed a miracle from heaven. Our testimonies are undeniable proof that Jesus is alive – and when we share our testimonies, many people will be drawn into the Kingdom of God. It is no time to draw back, but to rise up and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. 

Meditations in a Global Crisis:

Dashed Hopes and Eternal Hope

F

or all of us, this pandemic and its surrounding crisis has led to dashed hopes in some way. This could range from a cancelled event, all the way to the death of a loved one. As believers in Christ, we are not immune from dashed hopes. Consider the experience of John the Baptist. Here was the prophet who had lived a life of faithfulness and sacrifice, declaring Christ as the promised Messiah. Sometime later, he was arrested by the morally corrupt Herod for speaking truth. In a trying and perplexing situation, John asked whether Jesus was in fact the Messiah. Perhaps he expected Jesus to visit him and get him released. However, the Lord does neither, and John was soon beheaded in prison.

We often expect God to do certain things in our lives, but despite our prayers, God seems to do otherwise. How then do we live with dashed hopes?

1 Peter 1:13 has some life-giving advice, as the apostle urges the church to “set your hope fully on the grace given you when Jesus Christ is revealed.” Yes, we will face some dashed hopes in this life, but this life was never meant to sustain the full weight of our hopes. Rather, we are called to set our ultimate – and in fact singular – hope on when Jesus Christ is revealed. It is this single hope that we are called to, a hope described in Revelation 21: 3-5. Here, we will live with God, as He puts an end to death, crying, and pain, and recreate a world where all our hopes will be fully realised. That, and that alone, is our one sure hope that will never disappoint. So while some our hopes on this side of eternity may not be realised, may we set our ultimate hope on the eternal promises of Christ. 

JUICER

your solution to raw vegetables / natural medicine Drink your vegetables for better health! As a result of our hectic, modern lifestyle, it is impossible to consume enough raw vegetables (with their antioxidants, plant chemicals, living minerals, enzymes, vitamins, etc.) for optimal nutrition. Juicing vegetables is one of the best sources of nutrients for building and regenerating our body and immune system. Because the juice is separated from the fibre, the advantage is that digestion is so much easier and more efficient. With a good gear juicer, like the GREEN STAR, very few nutrients are lost, plus the super nutrients end up in your bloodstream much faster to do their good work. Use your juicer to: • Detox with a daily vegetable juice • Make your own nut butter • Grind wheat sprouts for Essene bread • Make raw soups • Make your own ice cream • Make baby food

your solution for staple foods

You cannot compare refined white flour to whole grain flour. White flour contains only 10% of the nutrition of whole grain flour. It causes a chemical imbalance in your body with resulting damage that can lead to things like obesity, type 2 diabetes, and so forth. Grain foods such as bread, pizza, pasta, etc. should only be made with freshly ground, live, and organic grains. This ensures that the fragile essential fatty acids and amino acids (protein) in the germ of the grain are fresh and does not get rancid, bitter, and toxic. Apart from the larger amount of nutrients, it also tastes three times better. You also do not get hungry so soon again.

Animals are worthy of our respect and proper care “A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal, but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel.” – Proverbs 12:10

O

—by Hermien Van Den Bergh

ur missionary travels came to an abrupt halt during lockdown. Abundant wildlife became our neighbourhood on the banks of the Limpopo river. My son, Dawid, and myself wake up every morning to the tranquillity of nature, far removed from the frenetic pace of urban living. We cannot help but be reminded how incredibly sacred the gift of nature is to mankind.

Suffering at the hand of man Unfortunately, I am also reminded of the malpractice that happens far too often in the commercialisation of animals. It causes untold hardship and damage to the animal kingdom. Many people are painfully aware of the suffering of animals at the hand of man. It is sometimes too hard to watch when scenes of horrible animal abuse float through social media. This is not right. Animals are worthy of our respect and proper care.

Reformation includes our attitude towards animals As Christians, we have to reform our ways towards animals. We cannot simply leave it in the hands of those who many people call the “greenies.” Each one of us is responsible for the welfare of animals. We have been given a dominion mandate from heaven to rule this earth with love, power, and wisdom. Given to us are natural and spiritual laws to operate in, with consequences when laws are violated. In Leviticus 18, God warns us that the earth will vomit humans out if we abuse the land. It is clear that unrestrained consumerism is wrecking the natural world and we are already paying the price. New ways to go forward have to be found.

The effect of the Coronavirus The arrival of Covid-19 has turned our world upside down, and with an ironic twist. Previously fearful and frustrated animals were locked up and people looked in. Now it has happened the other way around. This begs the question, why did Covid-19 happen, and can we learn from this experience?

Stressed animals become virus factories According to a report by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, scientists agree that the virus was the result of a Zoonotic Spillover, crossing from animals to humans. This spillover is exacerbated by human-caused stress that mammals face, and the virus was transferred from animals to humans through inappropriate interaction. How many more animal-borne viruses must we fall victim to before we change? Let the children of God make our voices heard for those who have no voice. Animals need our help. 

The sobering message behind this global pandemic is that the whole of humanity has been brought to its knees because of animal cruelty. What is even more sobering is that animals still remain victims in South Africa, and while everything else has slowed down – animal cruelty hasn’t.

Don’t just make a change – BE the change and DONATE today. While the rest of the country has been in the safety of their own homes, the NSPCA has been operating as an essential service to protect the vulnerable animals in our country. To the animals, we are their doctors, their nurses, their firefighters, their police officers, their therapists, and more often than we would like – their only source of compassion and kindness.

Biblically based answers for tough questions

My son is addicted to drugs – do I take a ‘tough love’ approach and kick him out? Or must I love him unconditionally?

ASK VAL Email questions to: joyquestions@valwaldeck.com

A.

Every individual responds differently and there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution. Each situation must be treated on its own merits and under the direction and counsel of the Holy Spirit. Here is a word for you from the inspired scriptures: “If you want to know what God wants you to do, ask him, and he will gladly tell you, for he is always ready to give a bountiful supply of wisdom to all who ask him; he will not resent it” – James 1:5, TLB. Most important of all is to pray earnestly for your son. Wield the powerful weapon that the Lord has put in your hands by faith. “We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.” – 2 Corinthians 10:3-5, NLT 18 JOY! MAGAZINE

Why are there so many differing opinions about the end times? Surely Christians should all believe the same thing? A. The Bible is clear about many things concerning the end times, but specific details are not always available. For example, John the Apostle was given relevant information in the vision he penned in the book of Revelation, but he was not permitted to share parts of that vision with the church. “Now when the seven thunders uttered their voices, I was about to write; but I heard a voice from heaven saying to me, Seal up the things which the seven thunders uttered, and do not write them” – Revelation 10:4. Christians do believe the same thing. We know that Jesus is coming again, recognisable signs will precede His return, and we must be ready to meet Him without notice. As for specific details, like a giant jigsaw puzzle, some pieces are missing. We do our best to make sense of what we do know, but agree to disagree in humility. Only God

knows the full picture and any teaching outside Biblical parameters leans heavily on religious philosophy.

We know what happens to our souls when we die, but what does the Bible say about our physical bodies when we die? A. We are confident that to be absent from the body means “to be present with the Lord” – 2 Corinthians 5:8. The Bible also assures us that our bodies are important to God. They will be resurrected, changed in an instant, and reunited to our spiritual being on the day of the Resurrection. 1 Corinthians 15 shares the details. Meditate on verses 35-49, and you will discover that our weak, corruptible bodies are designed to be raised as powerful, glorious bodies. The Lord redeemed us fully – spirit, soul, and body – and the day of resurrection for our bodies is on His calendar. That is why the Lord commands that we treat our bodies with dignity and respect and take good care of them (1 Corinthians 3:16,17). 

I recently read the book, Mother and son, by Emerson Eggerichs. It has transformed the way I am a mother to them. It teaches you how to talk to boys. Boys thrive when they are respected. The author puts it so well: “You have to speak to the man in the boy.” The man in him wants to protect you and take care of you and kill the monsters that threaten you. Ever since I started applying this, everything has changed. I cannot remember when I last had to give him a time-out. “I was Miss World

and yet I still had very little self-confidence.”

Everything centres around it. It was no coincidence that I became Miss South Africa and Miss World. The Lord has a plan for my life. Before I make business decisions, I first ask: Does this fit into God’s plan for my life?

Q

You have such an influential platform and so many different avenues that you could follow. How do you know what God’s Will is for you? I struggled with that for a long time. When I was Miss World, we went to Singapore for a holiday. We attended one of Joseph Prince’s services and met with him afterwards. D’niel, my husband, is a deeply spiritual person. He had a list of questions for Joseph. One of them was: How do you know if you are making the right choice? Joseph’s answer was actually so simple. “How do you expect God to direct a stationary car? In faith you must do what you believe God’s plan is for you. Just take the first step. He will guide you.” »

Beauty with Purpose JoY! chatted to these beautiful ladies about their faith, the myth of the perfect woman, and about health from the inside out...

Q

You gave up your dream of becoming a doctor to be with your family. Tell us about that decision.

By the end of my final year, my son was almost one year old and my husband and I were in our second year of a long-distance marriage. I had to choose – complete my community service year or be with my family. I chose my family. There is a big part of me that misses the medical life a lot; the satisfaction of helping someone else.

Q

How did the Lord answer that cry of your heart?

In 2018, Ledivia and I started RevitaHealth. She manages the medical side of things (I prefer not to, as I have not completed my internship in community service), and I have been involved with the business side and marketing. One day D’niel came home and said, “I found the perfect thing for you.” That is how I started with

my master’s degree in management coaching at the University of Stellenbosch Business School. The part of me that longed to help others was fulfilled by the coaching. My coaching is about women’s self-confidence. I actually started the studies to empower myself and to regain my own self-confidence.

Q

You had little self-confidence? That is very hard to believe!

I was Miss World and yet I had very little self-confidence. I still did not believe I was enough. When I share this with women, it changes their perception. I remember breastfeeding my son while I was preparing for my medical exam. I felt so guilty. I felt like I wasn’t studying hard enough, and that I wasn’t spending enough time with my son and my husband. I knew there had to be more to it than trying to be perfect all the time and feeling like you’re failing.

“our RevitaHealth team prays together and for each of our patients.”

Q

Your website says: “Say no to the woman called perfect.” Is that what you are referring to?

Yes! The thing is, many women believe, just like me at the time, that they are not enough. It doesn’t necessarily have to be about beauty, it could be any other criteria. Even Christians tell me that on the one hand they know they are good enough, but they do not feel good enough. That is why I did research to find out what gives you that confidence. Yes, your identity is in God. Yes, when you pray and know that God is your Creator, you feel better, but there are practical ways you can also build up your self-esteem. And that is what my coaching is all about. Most people think self-confidence is static; something you cannot improve. My online course, Rediscover Your Self-Confidence, will be released on the 24th of July and will help you practically to use 100% of your self-confidence potential, not just 40% (for example).

every Monday morning. Everyone who walks in here entrusts themselves to us. That is why we really try to be a safe haven for them. I have quite a few international coaching clients from other cultures or religions. When I was Miss World, I wondered how to live my Christianity while respecting all cultures and religions. I learnt that the Lord uses me in all kinds of ways and that I do not necessarily have to preach to anyone. I plant the seed and He waters it. However, I find there are times when the Lord leads me to say something. All my clients are also in my prayer journal. Whether they like it or not, I pray for them.

Questions For Ledivia:

Q

“All my clients are in my prayer journal. Whether they like it or not, I pray for them.”

Ledivia, you had an important turning point in your life, please tell us about it.

As a first year student, I had a meaningful encounter with the Lord. I always believed that I was not good enough, because I am an introvert. At the newcomer’s camp, the Lord confirmed to me that I can just who I am; that He will use me with my introverted personality. That was a turning point. There the seed was planted to encourage others that the Lord uses us exactly the way He created us, because He does not make a mistake.

Q

Your husband’s rugby career took you to France for seven years. What did the time there teach you?

I am very blessed to be married to a man of faith, Retief Uys. It was a time of growth for us. We started a cell group together with Fijians, a New Zealander, and two other South African couples. We discovered so many truths as we delved into the Word. This is where I learnt to grow and flourish where you are planted. »

Q

How do you live out your Christianity in your daily profession?

I cannot separate my Christianity from what I do every day. Especially because I am a doctor. The Lord is the great Physician. We can treat people, but He heals them. I believe this is my calling. When I look back, I can see how the Lord directed my paths, because initially I wanted to be an anaesthetist. Then we ended up in France. There I became involved in aesthetic medicine, as it was an easy way for me to earn some money. I flew to South Africa every three months to give my patients their botox injections. You do not know me at all, but those who do, said it is the last thing they thought I would do! The inner transformation that women undergo is very meaningful to me.

In France, I realised how many emotionally broken women there are. Patients learn to trust you and share their hearts with you. I realised how women’s questions about their health, their weight, and their hormones were not being answered and decided to study this further.

Q

And then you discovered functional medicine. What is that?

With my studies in France, I was able to follow their much more holistic approach to health and medicine. I discovered the new field of functional medicine. One tries to get to the root of the patient’s problem. You do not just prescribe medication to treat symptoms. We walk the path back to health with our patients.

Q

You mention the concept of beauty from the inside out on your website. What do you mean by that?

The most important thing is spiritual and emotional health, but also at the “The Lord uses us exactly cellular level. “diet” at all, because you are much more than just a number on a scale. I help patients to stop focussing on a number and to focus on optimal cellular and metabolic health. This is why I offer the Healthy Eating course, amongst other things. In my clinical work with patients, I found out how uninformed people are about what eating healthy really means. My wish is that every mom could do this course with her children. My daughter is eight years old and she knows what is healthy for her body. We do not talk about weight in our home at all, but she knows what is healthy for her. If we empower our children to be healthy and the best version of themselves that Jesus made them to be, we would not struggle with chronic illnesses.

Q

Fear is also a chronic illness. What advice do you have those struggling with it?

“The Lord is the great Physician. We can treat people, but He heals them.”

We see so many patients struggling with anxiety now. Physiological stress has the same effect as psychological stress on our body. Your body cannot distinguish between the two. It responds in exactly the same way – it increases your adrenaline, your cortisol. Whether you are fearful about the future, or whether a lion is chasing you – your body initiates the fight-or-flight reaction. Physiologically it reacts exactly the same. But, your brain can only focus on one thing at a time. So the moment you feel anxious, you must deliberately try to occupy your mind with something else. Think of something you are grateful for, or meditate on a Scripture, or encourage someone else. I like 2 Timothy 1:7 as it is so powerful. The Lord says He did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and a sound mind.

Q

Lastly, do you offer ladies mornings or courses?

We usually host a RevitaHealth Women’s Summit, but this year we offer everything online. Interested parties can subscribe to our newsletter at www.revitahealth.za and our Healthy Eating 101 online course will be available again in August. 

Conceived In Rape

And Adopted

Erika Hopes Her Story Helps Other Women Choose Life —by Nancy Flanders

E

rika Kapustinski grew up knowing that she was adopted, but it wasn’t until high school that she really began asking questions about her birth mother. That curiosity would eventually lead to the discovery that she had been conceived in rape and that her mother, just a young teen at the time, had chosen life for her against the odds.

Reaching out to her birth mom After reading letters from her birth mother that her adoptive parents had saved for her over the years, Kapustinski reached out to her birth mom. The two began writing letters to each other, but after a lull in communication, Kapustinski — then a 21-year-old mother “Thank you to two small children — for loving me found herself wondering about her birth father, whom enough to choose her birth mother had never adoption for me. mentioned. She decided I love you.” to call her in the hope of learning who he was.

Heart-breaking truth “My birth-mom was only 14 years old when she gave birth to me, 13 when she was pregnant,” Kapustinski wrote in an essay for Love What Matters, a website that exists to spread real stories about real people. When she asked her mother about her father she told her, “You were conceived in rape.” “I could hear her gasping for air as she wept on the other end of the phone,” wrote Kapustinski. “She had these big signs of grief with a shaking in her voice as she said, ‘I don’t know who he is. I can only tell 26 JOY! MAGAZINE

I remember hearing someone else call his name, I think, a friend of his maybe, but I barely remember that.’ She also told me, ‘I have never told anyone this before.’”

‘It is not your fault’ Kapustinski sat silently for a few moments while her birth mother cried and said she was sorry she didn’t know who he was. But despite the shock of the news, Kapustinski knew she needed to bring some comfort to her birth mother. “It is not your fault. It is okay,” Kapustinski told her. “I am just so thankful that you felt strong enough to tell me. Thank you for loving me enough to choose adoption Erika wants to for me. I love you.”

help other women realise that they have choices other than abortion.

Kapustinski said that the realisation that she was conceived in rape did not fully hit her until years later. Raised as a Christian, she had always been against abortion. But during a challenging time in her life, as a mother to four children, she saw abortion as the only way out — twice. In 2015, she had two abortions. She recently returned to the clinic to obtain her medical records and the only pictures she has of those two children: their ultrasounds. Now a mother to five living children, those abortions have left her in deep pain. “Both were traumatising, left me in shame, fearful, and I felt no worth as a mom to my kids at the time. I never felt good enough.

My choice to have two abortions changed how I viewed myself and it left me feeling chained to lies and shame for almost another four years,” she said.

Finding peace and healing After finding peace through a post-abortion healing class, Kapustinski began to face the fact that she was conceived in rape. “I kept coming back to the reality, the truth that I was a product of rape,” she wrote. “Me. Conceived In Rape

And Adopted

Erika Hopes Her Story Helps Other Women Choose Life (earth-side) and I am a wife, daughter, friend, and sister. I would not have been any of those things if my birth-mom did not choose life for me. But she did. She chose to keep me despite her situation. She chose adoption for me.” Kapustinski said this reality hit her harder because she had not chosen life for her own two babies when the circumstances were difficult. She said she wasn’t strong enough at that point in her life to be able to choose life.

“That life growing inside of that woman could one day be someone like me,” she said. “A wife, mother, sister, daughter, friend, someone who hopes to use her story to change the world and change hearts. That is my passion. That is my desire. My prayer is that God would use this as a way to heal, change, and transform the hearts of people and that women who maybe relate to my story would experience the same freedom and healing that I have.”

Using her story to help others

Many people, even some who consider themselves pro-life, believe that abortion is necessary for women who become pregnant through rape. But women who have abortions after rape often suffer immensely from that choice, while women who choose life are grateful for their children. Abortion is a second act of violence for a victim of rape, and those women and their children deserve hope and healing that doesn’t come through abortion. 

Now Erika wants to help other women realise that they have choices other than abortion when faced with an unplanned pregnancy. She wants them to understand that they have options and support.

Children deserve hope and healing

Healed by the Son of God A Muslim man meets Jesus

“And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.” – James 5:15

esus is the same today as He was in the pages of the New Testament. He is still in the business of healing and restoration. In fact, when we preach Jesus resurrected, miracles are the natural occurrence. And when Jesus heals the sick, spiritual eyes are opened and lives are forever changed.

Born a Muslim, he rejected religion Mohammed Haruna was born into a Muslim family in Ghana. As a child, he learnt about religion, but his heart was restless. Something was missing. Longing to know God, he tried to switch from Islam to Christianity, but without a personal relationship with Jesus, he soon came back to Islam. Although he believed God existed, he couldn’t figure out how to truly know Him. As time went by, he lost hope and in 2003, with a heavy

heart, he decided to leave all religion behind. That decision had terrible consequences for him. It was something his extended family and community could not accept. Suddenly, he found himself rejected by everyone, except his wife and two children. Life had become barren and lonely. For the next few years, Mohammed struggled with deep depression.

Isolated, angry, and confused Then things got even worse. In 2010, Mohammed began to lose his hearing, becoming deaf. His world shrank. It became difficult for him to work as a mason, because he couldn’t communicate. To get his attention, people had to physically tap him. He spent whatever he could on medicine, but nothing worked. He tried to adjust to a life of isolation and silence.

Just a safe place to sleep Then, in November 2013, Mohammed travelled to the nation’s capital, Accra. The final day of his visit was November 9th, and he planned to take the train back to his home. But he was delayed, and by the time he got to the station, he had missed his train. Resigned to the situation, he tried to think of a safe place to spend the night, and “Independence Square”, a well-known plaza in Accra, came to mind. Wearily, he made his way there and found a bench to lie down on. Since he was deaf, he had no idea why there was a big crowd gathered, and he didn’t care. The noise of the CfaN Gospel Campaign happening in the plaza didn’t bother him. He couldn’t hear it. And so, he quickly fell asleep.

Join hands with us to bring Africa to Jesus

Jesus Christ is the only Son of God. He alone reveals the Father, heals our bodies, and saves our souls.

Right now, God is moving supernaturally in Africa, with millions coming to Christ. But CfaN can’t do this alone. We need you!

Unexpected and undeserved grace His sleep was suddenly interrupted. Mohammed woke up with the curious sensation of liquid in his ears. As he removed the liquid with his fingers, his ears popped open. His hearing had returned. And the first sound he experienced after more than two years of silence was the voice of a preacher praying for the sick. Mohammed could hardly believe what was happening. But this he knew: Jesus Christ had just healed him. He rushed to the stage to share his story. Overcome with emotion, he stood trembling before Daniel Kolenda, with a look of astonishment on his face. “My name is Mohammed,” he said, and proceeded to tell his story. “I wasn’t even trying to come here! I didn’t even pray. I didn’t do anything. I woke up – and I can hear!”

Acknowledging the Father Daniel asked Mohammed if he knew the Name of the One who had healed him. “The messenger of the Almighty God … Jesus,” he said. Still reeling from shock, Mohammed struggled to find the words to describe what had just happened to him. Daniel explained to Mohammed and the crowd; “Jesus is not just a messenger. He is the Son of the living God. He is the way, the truth and the life…”

‘Tell my wife – Jesus is the Son of God!’ By the end of their conversation, Mohammed wanted to get the message to his wife. Excitedly, he announced the name of his home town and said, “If anybody knows me … tell my wife, ‘Jesus is the Son of God!’” The crowd erupted in praise. No football team had ever received such an ovation. The people were jumping and dancing and shouting for joy. After all the years, Mohammed had finally come to know the true God. Now he hears the voice of his Good Shepherd, Jesus, and joyfully follows Him. And the message he shouted to his wife from the platform, is the message his testimony shouts to the world: Jesus Christ is the only Son of God. He alone reveals the Father, heals our bodies, and saves our souls. 

Why is the science community so opposed to creationism?

I

t is important to distinguish between the terms “science” and “scientific community.” Science is a discipline concerned with observing, experimenting with, and explaining phenomena. The scientific community is composed of the living human persons who participate in this discipline. The distinction is important because there is no logical contradiction between science and creationism. Science is a generic term for a type of study, while creationism is a philosophy applied to the interpretation of facts. The scientific community, as it exists today, holds naturalism as the preferred philosophy, but there is no overt reason why naturalism should be preferred by science over creationism.

Facts and interpretations are completely different

There is no logical contradiction between science and creationism.

In general, there is a perception that creationism is “unscientific.” This is partly true, in the sense that creationism entails certain assumptions that cannot be tested, proven, or falsified. However, naturalism is in exactly the same predicament, as an untestable, unprovable, non-falsifiable philosophy. The facts discovered in scientific research are only that: facts. Facts and interpretations are two different things. The current scientific community rejects, in general, the concepts of creationism, and so they define it as “unscientific.” This is highly ironic, given the scientific community’s preference for an interpretive philosophy—naturalism—that is just as “unscientific” as creationism.

Scientists tend to favour naturalism, but does science? There are many reasons for this tendency towards naturalism in science. Creationism involves the intervention of a supernatural being, and science is primarily concerned with tangible and physical things. For this reason, some in the scientific community fear that creationism 32 JOY! MAGAZINE

will lead to a “God of the Gaps” dilemma, where scientific questions are shrugged off by the explanation, “God did it.” Experience has shown that this is not the case. Some of the greatest names in scientific history were staunch creationists. Their belief in God inspired them to ask, “How did God do it?” Among these names are Pascal, Maxwell, and Kelvin. On the other hand, an unreasonable commitment to naturalism can degrade scientific discovery. A naturalistic framework requires a scientist to ignore results that do not fit the established paradigm. That is, when new data does not correlate to the naturalistic view, it is assumed to be invalid and discarded.

There are distinct religious overtones to creationism

Science is only as objective as those who participate in it, and those persons are just as subject to bias as in any other field. There are those who reject creationism in favour of naturalism, purely for personal ‘moral’ reasons. In fact, this number is probably much higher than would be admitted. Most people who reject the concepts of God do so primarily because they disagree with some perceived restriction or unfairness, despite claims to the contrary, and this is as true for those in lab coats as those in overalls.

The science community’s hostile and condescending attitude towards Christianity In the same way, an unfriendly attitude in the scientific community has had its impact on the perception of creationism. Science has benefited from creationist contributors for centuries; yet today the scientific community, at large, takes a hostile and condescending attitude towards anyone who doesn’t take a naturalistic perspective. This open hostility towards creationist views, and religion in general, creates a strong incentive for persons with those views to avoid

In plain terms, religiously tinged ideas, such as creationism, impinge on the scientific community’s claim to superior knowledge of the universe.

Is science swayed by politics?

All the glory to God!

There are also political reasons for the scientific community’s hostility While there may be many reasons for tension between the scientific towards creationism and religion in general. For more questions and answers, visit www. gotquestions.org whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.”

Competition between scientists and religious leaders There is also a level of competition between the scientific community and the religious community over power, producing additional tensions between science and creationism. As even some leading sceptic scientists have admitted, there is a tendency for the scientific community to position itself, even subconsciously,

THEOLOGY

Why Study Church History? —by Antonio Coppola

I

s history boring? Is it just stories of old dead men about whom no one cares? What about church history in particular? What difference can looking at the past possibly make for my faith in Christ? Why even bother? Here are four reasons why studying church history is very important:

Today’s Church does not exist in a vacuum

For most of our history, the Church has maintained the “rule of faith”. This means that we have already settled on the major doctrines of the faith, whether it be the Trinity, the divine inspiration of scripture, original sin, the incarnation of Christ, or the atoning death of Christ and His resurrection. The confessions of the Church helpfully summarise the Church’s rule of faith for us.

We’re not the first generation to read the Bible. For the past two- We can learn from the heroes of the faith thousand years, Christians have wrestled with scripture. We see the unbroken chain of the Gospel The remarkable thing about studying church history is that, in every generation, God preserves a remnant in His Church to faithfully proclaim His true Gospel. The Gospel was received by the Church through divine authority from the apostles (1 Cor 15:1, Gal 1:9). This apostolic Gospel declares that Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day. The Gospel is “the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes…” – Romans 1:16 God ensures that against all odds, against all kinds of opposition, rejection, ridicule, and persecution, this “foolish message” is proclaimed faithfully in every generation. It’s through

Jesus Christ promises that He will build His Church and the gates of hell will not prevail (Matt 16:18). Church history is proof of this fact! Finding the Light in the Night Lessons from Nicodemus

W

hen I was a young boy I was given a pocket-sized copy of John’s Gospel. I was fascinated when I turned to chapter 3 and read about my a man with my namesake, Nicodemus. Who was he? What were his motives in coming to Jesus? What did he learn from his conversation with Jesus? How did it affect the rest of his life?

—by Nico Bougas It doesn’t matter when we approach Jesus Whether men and women come to Jesus by night or by day, privately or publicly, the important thing is that they do come. Thank God, anyone who comes can be sure of a royal welcome. As Jesus said, “those the Father has given me will come to me, and I will never reject them.” – John 6.37

Nicodemus visited Jesus at night Whenever Nicodemus is mentioned in the Gospels it is always with the label, “the same that came to Jesus by night.” Why is this religious leader in Israel always spoken of in this way? Was he a coward, afraid of what the fellow-members of the Sanhedrin would say if they saw him seeking out Jesus? Possibly, but more likely it was because it was the best time for both Jesus and himself to have a quiet, uninterrupted conversation about spiritual matters. Nicodemus had been occupied all day with his teaching duties, and Jesus had been busy with his outdoor ministry. Now both could relax and talk through the night. It may be that Nicodemus had such a heart hunger that he could not wait until morning, and so came running to Jesus as soon as he could. 36 JOY! MAGAZINE

The Word of God clearly indicates that we are not saved by our own efforts.

throughout His ministry. Jesus often strongly denounced them for their legalism.

A religious man These facts tell us that Nicodemus was a very religious man. This member of the Sanhedrin was “Israel’s teacher”. We also know from the record that he was a moral man, that is, he lived a good and upright life. There is nothing on record against Nicodemus. This is the man who came to Jesus and who needed to be born again. Good people need to be born again as well as bad people!

HIS CURIOSITY HIS CHARACTER It seems that Nicodemus was sincere, courteous, earnest, intelligent, influential, and “a member of the Jewish ruling council.” All that we know of Nicodemus in the Bible is from the Gospel of John. He is described as a Pharisee. The Pharisees were a group of Jews who were fastidious in keeping the letter of the Law, and often opposed Jesus

Isn’t it interesting that no one doubted Jesus’ miracles in His day? “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these miraculous signs that You do unless God is with him,” said Nicodemus. When He began to teach in the synagogue, many who heard Him were amazed. “Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing?” – Mark 6:2

Have you had an encounter with Jesus? Have you declared your faith in Him openly? Have you been born again?

Pharisees hindered Jesus’ ministry When Jesus came near road that goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully praising God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen. The Pharisees hated Him, but couldn’t deny His miracles. They claimed that He drove out demons because he was satanically inspired. They were worried that if they allowed Him to continue performing miracles that the whole world would follow after Him.

No one denied Jesus’ miracles There are some professors in liberal seminaries today who doubt the miracles of Jesus. They are studying events from more than 2000 years ago, several thousand kilometres away from the land where the miracles took place. If you turn to the Bible though, you will see that none of the people who encountered Jesus doubted His miracles – not his closest friends, nor his enemies (who were always looking to discredit Him).

HIS CONVERSATION Nicodemus was an enquiring man. It was with a sense of wonder that he came for an

interview with the Lord, and when he did so he got more than he bargained for. Think of it – this religious, moral man was spiritually dead and needed to be born again! Our churches are full of such people today. They are Godfearing, but have never been born again. They are spiritually dead, they need to receive Christ and be born into God’s family. But, if it was only curiosity that made Nicodemus seek Jesus

Jesus showed Nicodemus that it wasn’t enough to be genuine and sincere.

out, it is certain that before long his curiosity changed to concern. It’s great when a person begins to feel really concerned about his soul’s salvation. This concern is produced by the convicting – or convincing – work of the Holy Spirit. It’s only when we know and feel that we are lost that we seek the way of salvation.

Nicodemus did not know about being born again When Jesus spoke about the new birth,

Nicodemus was puzzled. He answered Jesus by asking Him how a man could be born a second time. It’s interesting that he wasn’t afraid to admit his ignorance. He didn’t pretend to know all the answers. He was open in his conversation with the Lord Jesus. It is important to notice that all he said and the questions he asked indicated that he was not only spiritually dead, but he was blind too. He just could not understand spiritual truth; no more than anyone can until they have been born again. Nicodemus was honest enough to say so and his honesty led to the Lord making a fuller explanation of the necessity, the meaning, and the method of the new birth.

We cannot earn God’s favour What Jesus was saying to him was, “You need to start all over again.” Nicodemus had been trying to be religious for his whole life. He was highly respected in the community as a religious man and a teacher. He, like the other Pharisees, legalistically followed the letter of the law. They thought that following all these religious observances would earn them the favour of God. But the Word of God clearly indicates that we are not saved by » JOY! MAGAZINE 37

HIS CONFUSION In saying, “We know that you are a teacher come from God,” Nicodemus showed one basic misunderstanding. Jesus was not a teacher come from God, but God come to teach. There have been thousands of teachers that have come from God – Moses, Isaiah, Paul, the disciples, Luther, Calvin, Augustine, and more. Many men today are teachers come from God. But only once did God come to teach. It is not enough to believe that Jesus is the best of mankind, and that He was a “good teacher,” but to believe that He was God manifest in the flesh.

deeply upon all that he had heard, and that on that particular night he did not make any commitment of his soul to the Lord Jesus for salvation. We cannot be sure. It does seem, however, that as a result of this interview with Jesus, Nicodemus was born again, he was converted, he became a Christian, he really entered into a life of discipleship. Later in the gospel he is seen to take a stand for Jesus when the rest of the Sanhedrin was ready to convict Him without any sort of hearing.

Limited knowledge of Nicodemus

HIS CONVERSION To become a member of God’s family, we need to be born again spiritually.

Nicodemus was cautious enquirer, but a man of spiritual perception. He sought out Christ, and listened to one of His remarkable conversational sermons. Nicodemus, while not yet fully convinced of Jesus’ divinity, had seen the miracles Jesus performed. Comparing what he knew from the Old Testament and the expectation of the Messiah, he planned for a way to see Jesus. Therefore, he came honestly seeking after God. This respected master in Israel confesses Christ to be a teacher sent from God and heard that – in spite of his culture, position, and religion – he needed to be born anew by the spirit of God.

Nicodemus presents the opinion that Jesus should not be dismissed or condemned until they have heard from Him personally: “Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?” However, the rest of the Council rudely dismisses Nicodemus’s suggestion out of hand—they appear to have already made up their minds about Jesus.

is in John 19, after Jesus’ crucifixion. We find Nicodemus rendered loving, though belated, service to Christ. Openly he joined Joseph of Arimathea, another secret disciple, in preparing Christ’s body for a kingly burial. Joseph is described in John as a rich man and as a member of the Council. He is also described in John 19:38 as a disciple of Jesus, albeit a secret one because he was afraid of the Jews. Joseph asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Nicodemus brought 75 pounds of spices for use in preparing the body for burial and then assisted Joseph in wrapping the body and placing it in the tomb. The sheer amount of burial spices would seem to indicate that Nicodemus was a rich man and that he had great respect for Jesus.

The limited account in John’s Gospel leaves many questions about Nicodemus unanswered. Was he a true believer? What did he do after the resurrection? The Bible is silent on these questions, and there are no reliable extra-biblical resources that give answers. It would appear that Nicodemus may have been similar to Joseph of Arimathea in that perhaps he, too, was a disciple of Jesus but had not yet mustered the courage to declare his faith openly. Perhaps Nicodemus’s final recorded act was his declaration of faith.

How about you? Have you had an encounter with Jesus? Have you declared your faith in Him openly? Have you been born again? 

eternal life? What is

W

hen the Bible speaks of eternal life, it refers to a gift of God that comes only “through Jesus Christ our Lord” – Romans 6:23. This gift is in contrast to the “death” that is the natural result of sin. The gift of eternal life comes to those who believe in Jesus Christ, who is Himself “the resurrection and the life” – John 11:25. The fact that this life is “eternal” indicates that it is perpetual life—it goes on and on and on, with no end.

Eternal life functions both inside and outside of time

There is no eternal life without Jesus

The Bible inextricably links eternal life with the Person of Jesus Christ. John 17:3 is an important passage in this regard, as Jesus prays, “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” Here, Jesus equates “eternal life” with a knowledge of God and of the Son. There is no knowledge of God without the Son, for it is through the Son that the Father reveals Himself to the elect (John 17:6; 14:9).

A true, personal knowledge of

It is a mistake, however, to view eternal the Father and Son The gift of eternal life life as simply an unending progression of This life-giving knowledge of the Father comes to those who years. A common New Testament word for and the Son is a true, personal knowledge; believe in Jesus Christ. “eternal” is aiónios, which carries the idea of not just an academic awareness. It is a quality as well as quantity. In fact, eternal personal relationship. There will be some life is not really associated with ‘years’ at all, people on Judgement Day who had as it is independent of time. Eternal life can function outside of and claimed to be followers of Christ but never really had a relationship beyond time, as well as within time. For this reason, eternal life can be with Him. To those false professors, Jesus will say, “I never knew thought of as something that Christians experience now. you. Away from me, you evildoers!” – Matthew 7:23. The apostle Paul made it his goal to know the Lord, and he linked that knowledge to resurrection from the dead: “I want to know Christ—yes, to know the Eternal life starts now, not when we die Believers don’t have to ‘wait’ for eternal life, because it’s not power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming something that starts when they die. Rather, eternal life begins the like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection moment a person exercises faith in Christ. It is our current possession. from the dead.” – Philippians 3:10-11 John 3:36 says, “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life.” Note that the believer “has” (present tense) this life (the verb is present tense in Jesus takes away our sin the Greek, too). We find similar present-tense constructions in John In the New Jerusalem, the apostle John sees a river flowing from 5:24 and John 6:47. The focus of eternal life is not on our future, but “the throne of God and of the Lamb,” and “on each side of the river on our current standing in Christ. stood the tree of life … And the leaves of the tree are for the healing 40 JOY! Salvation Prayer

Eternal life begins the moment a person exercises faith in Christ. It can function outside of time, as well as within time.

Jesus, I believe that You died on the Cross for me. There You were wounded for my transgressions, You were bruised for my iniquities; and the punishment for my peace was upon You. I have been like a lost sheep, I have turned to my own way, but I believe that God laid my iniquity upon You. You died for me. Then You rose from the dead, You ascended into Heaven, and now seated on Your throne as Lord of all. Jesus, forgive me. I now turn away from my sin and put my trust in You. Fill me with Your Spirit, cleanse me, and take me as Your own.

Amen of the nations” – Revelation 22:1-2. In Eden, we rebelled against God and were banished from the tree of life (Genesis 3:24). In the end, God graciously restores our access to the tree of life. This access is provided through Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29). Right now, every sinner is invited to know Christ and to receive eternal life: “Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.” – Revelation 22:17

God graciously restores our access to the tree of life through Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. How can you know that you have eternal life? First of all, confess your sin before our holy God. Then accept God’s provision of a Saviour on your behalf. “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” – Romans 10:13. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died for your sins, and He rose again the third day. Believe this Good News; trust the Lord Jesus as your Saviour, and you will be saved (Acts 16:31; Romans 10:9-10). John puts it so simply: “God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” – 1 John 5:11-12  GOT QUESTIONS provides Biblical answers to tough questions. Getting to Know God

God’s Incomprehensibility —by Dr Victor Kuligin

I

n last month’s issue of JOY! Magazine we considered Genesis chapter 1 and what the creation account tells us about God. Before that, we discussed the importance of revelation, the doctrine that states that in order for us to properly know God, He must reveal Himself to us. Fortunately He has done just that, through His creation and more clearly through the Bible, which we called “God’s self-revelation.” In this issue, we will look at the topic of God’s incomprehensibility.

The Biblical evidence

The incomprehensibility of God is affirmed in numerous places in Scripture. For example, David writes, “Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and His greatness is unsearchable” – Psalm 145:3. The Hebrew for “unsearchable” literally means “beyond understanding.” Of course, David does not mean to imply that we can know nothing about God. Rather, he affirms that what we do know about Him is nevertheless limited. Paul concludes something similar when he writes, “Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How Why we need revelation There is a twofold reason why we need God’s revelation. First, as unsearchable are His judgements and His ways past finding out!” – finite sinners, our understanding of Him is naturally clouded. Without Romans 11:33. This is just after Paul wrote extensively about God’s nature. Clearly he does not mean that we God’s gracious revelation through His can know nothing about Him, but rather Word, we would be left with speculation that he has only scratched the surface, so to and guesswork. But even worse, our sinful We should never stop speak, of God’s being. inclination would be to warp what revelation thirsting for more we do have of God in order to appease our knowledge about God. selfish nature. Without God’s intervention, Practical application we would all be lost. From God’s imcomprehensibility come The general revelation of God found several practical implications: in creation will always lead to idolatry without the correction provided from the special revelation of God’s Word. Only through There will always be more to learn about God. We the Bible can we know how to have a relationship with God, one just saw this expressed in Paul’s comment above. That is why that is based upon His gracious forgiveness of our sins through we must always be “increasing in the knowledge of God” – Colossians Jesus Christ. 1:10. This is not an endeavour only to be embarked upon by pastors, theologians, and academics. It should be the vocation of every born-again believer. We should never stop thirsting for more God’s what? The second reason why we need God’s revelation is the topic for the knowledge about God. But this must always be from the proper remainder of this article. Knowing God

God’s incomprehensibility is affirmed in numerous places in Scripture.

In Jesus’ priestly prayer He says: “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent” – John 17:3. Do you see how our eternal destiny is tied to knowing God? And this is not just knowing something about God, it is knowing God Himself. It is having a relationship with Him. This is what Jesus called people to, a relationship with His heavenly Father.

Knowledge of God’s incomprehensibility should result in praise. If

studying theology is boring to you, then you have a heart problem. If meditating on the wondrous things God has done for you in Christ causes you to yawn, you have a problem of the soul. If dwelling upon God, who He is and what He has done, does not automatically cause you to well up in praise, to fall on your knees in adoration, to sing of the glories of God and Christ, then you have a problem. The more we know about God, the more we should praise Him.

We can never know God fully, but we can still know Him This series is not so much interested in getting to know something about God, but rather getting to know God Himself. Through Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, we can have a relationship with our Creator. We can call Him Father. In fact, it is only through Jesus that we can call God Father. “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. Was Jonah afraid? People often think that Jonah fled because he was afraid to prophesy in the capital of his enemy, but this doesn’t take into account what Jonah’s book tells us. We learn from reading Jonah that the prophet was not motivated by fear when he fled, but by hatred. He refused to declare a message of judgement upon Nineveh because he thought that God might forgive the Ninevites if they repented of their wicked ways. Jonah knew that God is “a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness” – Jonah 4:2. Despite being a man of God, Jonah preferred to see the Assyrians destroyed, not saved. And in fact, that is precisely what happened. The Ninevites repented and God relented of His judgement. However, apparently Nineveh’s repentance was short-lived. In about 20

SPIRITUAL WEAPONS OF WARFARE Understanding the wiles of the devil

o be subject to the wiles of the enemy means to be deceived. The Hebrew word for wiles is nekel. It basically refers to five things that often happen to us. As we have discussed in previous articles, the first wile is treachery. The second wile is conspiracy. The third wile is beguilement. The fourth wile is trickery. The fifth and probably most common wile of the enemy is deception. Deception is the act of causing someone to accept that which is false or invalid as true or valid. Satan, the father of lies, was defeated over 2000 years ago on the Cross. He now uses deception to gain power over man. The Bible also warns us of the mass deception in the Body of Christ as an end-time sign (Matthew 24:4-5, 11, 24; 1 Timothy 4:1-2).

The Holy Spirit exposes deception The Holy Spirit is instrumental is breaking the spirit of deception. Ananias and Sapphira died when they deliberately tried to deceive the Holy Spirit (Acts 5:3). Saul had the scales of deception fall off his eyes when the Holy Spirit came upon him (Acts 9:17-18). It was the Holy Spirit in Peter that exposed the deception to the Jews on the day of Pentecost and 3000 were saved (Acts 2:23,41).

Can a Christian who has the Holy Spirit be deceived?

Jesus warned us about the yeast of the Pharisees (Matt 16:5-12). It was this deception that caused the crowd to praise Adam and Eve were deceived by the The Holy Spirit is Jesus on Palm Sunday and then scream serpent in the Garden, and sin came into instrumental is breaking “crucify Him!” a few days later. We are born into deception

Many were deceived in Jesus’ time

Even the apostles who were with Jesus, they saw the glory of God but still struggled to believe. On one occasion Jesus asked the disciples who they think He is (Matt 16:15). On another occasion Philip was rebuked by Jesus (John 14:8). Even John the Baptist needed reassuring (Luke 7:18-35). It was not until Jesus rose from the grave that He removed these scales off the disciples’ eyes and they clearly understood the scriptures (Luke 24:44-45). On the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit turned up, power was released 50 JOY! MAGAZINE

How do we deal with a spirit of deception? We expose it immediately. Don’t allow the yeast to grow and infect more people. Deception is always done in secret as it does not want exposure. This is why those operating in deception will have secret meetings. Jesus said that sin must be confronted and if no resolution is found, then it must be exposed publicly (Matt 18:17). The great harlot, Babylon, that deceives the nations of the world is finally exposed (Rev 17:5) and this brings about her destruction.

The Bible warns us of the mass deception in the Body of Christ as an end-time sign (Matthew 24:4-5, 11, 24; 1 Timothy 4:1-2).

implies protection from the hurt and sins of our past. It paints a vivid picture of how Abba Father closes us off from our hurtful past in order for Him to heal us and restore our joy and peace again. The enemy wants to continuously remind us of our past and every single thing that we did wrong. The Word of Abba says that God wants to remove our transgressions from us, as far as the East is from the West (Psalm 103:12). He wants to hedge us in and remind us that although our sins may have made us red as scarlet, He wants to wash us as white as snow (Isaiah 1:18). He hedges us from behind to free us from our old life of sin. How beautiful is that? True freedom constitutes

e have been studying freedom to get a better understanding of what true biblical freedom entails. We have learnt that it is in the Word of Abba Father where true freedom lies. Obedience to the Word of the Father brings freedom to live with purpose. How can something that encloses you bring freedom? King David understood this concept, and I want to close this series with the study of one more verse with regards to true freedom: “Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.” – Psalm 139:5, KJV

Pergamum

the 7 Churches of

revelation

—by Tyron Otto

H

ave you ever noticed how small compromises can have devastating effects? This is the theme of the third letter of Revelation, to the church in Pergamum, warning them against the danger of compromising their Christian witness as believers.

The city of Pergamum The ancient Roman author, Pliny (AD 23-79), referred to Pergamum as “by far the most famous city in Asia.” Pergamum was famous for several reasons. Built on a conical hill, the city dominated the surrounding landscape. Its library was second only to the famous library in Alexandria. Cascading sharply down the precipitous slope, its theatre was an acoustic marvel. Its altar to Zeus stood 800 feet up on Pergamum’s hill where all day every day it smoked with sacrifices. Its famous Temple of Asclepius, who was worshipped as the god of healing, was the nearest approach to hospitals in the ancient world. And with the deification of the Emperor of Rome, Pergamum was known to be devoted to the worship of Caesar.

A double-edged sword

There are various suggestions to the meaning of “satan’s throne”. We cannot say that it is specific to the political climate, the cultural dynamics, or the religious idolatry. Nor can we say whether this meant that Pergamum was satan’s earthly base of operation, or whether it was just a way of suggesting that satan’s authority in Pergamum was just particularly powerful. What we can say is that it was especially difficult to be a Christian and live out your faith in the city of Pergamum. Their context is a reminder to us that it is not always easy to be a Christian in the places where we live. However, Jesus’ words are an assurance that He is not unaware of the intense struggle we face at times, saying, “I know where you live – where satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to My Name.” – Revelation 2:13

The martyr Antipas Moreover, Jesus knows every intimate detail of our struggle, as illustrated in His reference to Antipas. We don’t know much about Antipas other than Jesus saying he was a faithful witness and that he was put to death for his faith. According to Tertullian (155-220 AD), Antipas was brought before a statue of Caesar and told to swear that Caesar was God. His refusal saw him placed in a brazen bull shaped altar where he was slowly roasted to death!

The general tension between Christian and The foundations of the altar pagan religion would have been palpable. of Zeus at Pergamum And into this context Jesus speaks, not to the city of Pergamum, but to the church in Pergamum. Again we see the Lord A life of endurance identify Himself in a unique way that is specific to this church. Here And yet even in the face of such intense persecution, the believer’s He identifies Himself as the One whose words are a “sharp, double- at Pergamum had not renounced their faith in the Lord. This is an edged sword”. This implies that what He says, will work like a sword. important principle – that the Christian life is not a life of escape, Moreover, that it will cut in one of two ways. Dr Sam Storms, a Bible but of endurance. In the midst of this kind of hardship we can draw teacher, says, “On one hand, this sword has the power to perform encouragement, knowing that Jesus is intimately aware of the the most delicate of spiritual surgery … but to those who deny its intensity and challenges associated in remaining faithful to Him. authority, it is a means by which they will be called to account.”

Where satan has his throne It’s not uncommon for cities to carry nicknames to describe their character. For example, New York is known as the city that never sleeps, or Paris known as the city of lights. How frightening would it be to hear Jesus say to them that they were living in city “where satan has his throne”!

The danger of small compromises

“Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: You have people there who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin by eating food sacrificed to idols and by committing sexual immorality. Likewise you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans.” – Revelation 2:14 » JOY! MAGAZINE 55

Pergamum

the 7 Churches of

revelation Unlike the church at Ephesus, the church at Pergamum had apparently welcomed the Nicolaitans into their fellowship. We do not know much about who they were, other than they are group likened to those who held to the teaching of Balaam. It seems that the purpose of the comparison is to suggest that the Nicolaitans are the New Testament version of what Balaam was in the Old Testament to God’s people.

The story of Balaam The story of Balaam unfolds in Numbers 22-24. Balak, king of Moab, had a scheme to overpower the Israelites by hiring a prophet named Balaam to pronounce curses over them. But, God restrained Balaam by causing him to pronounce blessings instead. By all accounts Balaam failed and seems to disappear off the scene. The following chapter, however, says that the Israelite men “began to indulge in sexual immorality with Moabite women, who invited them to the sacrifices to their gods” – Numbers 25:1. What we only find out later in Numbers 31:15-16 is that it was Balaam who advised that the Moabite women should seduce the men of Israel by inviting them to partake in their religious feasts, which invariably led to sexual compromise.

Free to live immorally?

What if we have failed? What if we identify more with those in this church who are guilty of compromising? Listen then to what Jesus says next, “Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” The way we respond to compromise is through repentance. Repentance means a change of mind. It is the change of mind that leads to a change in attitude, which ultimately leads to a change of behaviour. That is why repentance is often referred to as a U-turn.

Return to His grace

While we might think that the word “repent” is intended to rebuke, Bible teacher HB Charles Jr reminds us that “this is a word to be embraced … it is a call to come back to God.” It is a declaration and invitation that it is not too late to change. Knowing that Jesus has every right to judge us when we compromise, here we find the wonderful assurance that He still extends His grace to us by offering us the opportunity to come back to Him. This is a life-giving word from Jesus to those who will receive it. There is however another side to His word, that if we reject His kind invitation we risk facing the unpleasantness of His discipline and judgement. Therefore, Jesus urges, “He who has an ear, let him hear.” If this is a word from the Lord that we need to hear then Jesus is calling us to not merely to listen, Depiction of the but to heed His instruction and repent.

Where Balaam sought to persuade the men of Israel that there was nothing wrong with a little compromise, the Nicolaitans sought to do the same among the believer’s in the church at Pergamum. It is possible that the Pergamum Acropolis, Nicolaitans may have taught that forgiveness from sin and freedom in Christ released them Remaining faithful Friedrich Thierch, 1882 from rules regarding moral behaviour and In my 12 year school career, I made the how they lived. At the end all I got was a certificate that was printed on Israelites, God’s people, risked looking no different to the pagan cultures thin piece of paper. I have to admit that sometimes it didn’t seem around them. This can be so true for us as Christian’s today, where we worth the effort. Jesus ends this letter by promising that those might compromise our views of sexuality, race, handling money, how who persevere will be awarded with “hidden manna” and “a white we speak, time management, and so forth. Small compromises in these stone with a new name written on it”. There are various suggested kinds of areas can lead to us looking no different to the non-Christian interpretations of what Jesus means, but both speak to the certainty world around us. Ask for a copy of their NCR registration certificate. Debt counsellors are monitored by the National Credit Regulator and perform duties as stipulated in the National Credit Act of 2007.

What steps should one take? The first step to legal protection is completing Form 16. From the moment you are registered, any legal action that was pending will cease. Collection calls will also cease. Your debt counsellor will negotiate new payment arrangements with your creditors. These are then made an Order of the Court. Please inform your debt counsellor if you continue receiving collections calls. It is important to notify your debt counsellor of any change in circumstance because your debt counsellor speaks for you during the debt review process. To retain your legal protection, you must maintain your minimum monthly payment. It is important that you are committed to settling your debt – you cannot exit debt review until all debt is settled.

What are the fees? Payments are monitored by the NCR and are made via a Payment Distribution Agent (PDA).When you make your first debt review payment, the PDA will distribute payment to the debt counsellor to a maximum of R9000 (once-off ). The assessment fee of R300 and registration fee of R50 are finalised in the second month. By the third month, fees are settled and your creditors will receive their first debt review payment. n no other time in the history of the world has the idea of ‘home’ been so important. While the home and the family has been under attack for years, the global coronavirus pandemic has enforced a pervasive narrative that encourages people to “stay home,” shielded from the virus.

Looking to the Bible For a few of the characters in the Bible, ‘home’ took the form a cave, a prison, a room, or a hole at any given time. The scriptures go on to record Jesus saying in Luke 9:57-62 that He had no physical home or place on the earth to lay His head. While Jesus was not homeless, it would appear that He was showing His disciples how valueless and temporal our earthly homes truly are in light of eternity and the cost of following Him.

Earth is not our final home The truth is that the homes we live in are foundational to our protection and comfort, but because of our own human imperfection, they are also places of failure, contention, brokenness, and pain at one or many points in our lives. There is however a home, a place that Jesus is preparing for the Bride of Christ, where disease will not have entry. Revelation 21:2-5 offers a beautiful glimpse of this dwelling. Like Abraham, we too must remind ourselves daily that we are mere sojourners on this earth, pilgrims passing through, “looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.” – Hebrews 11:10

Are you looking forward to eternity? If indeed God has placed eternity in our hearts (Ecc 3:11) then in a world that has been forever shaken – and the fear of death has become a reality for many – let us be slow to cling merely to the physical notions of home and rather invest in our future eternal home. Today, let us encourage each other to examine our lives – how are we beautifying our spiritual and eternal home, dressing our spirit, and posturing it for eternity? 

The Prophetic Voice of the Lord

W

ith the commencement of the new Hebrew decade 5780 – and the symbolic Hebrew meaning being that of the “mouth” – Psalm 29 is fitting for us to explore the relevance thereof. Have you ever considered the power of the voice of the Lord being released through your mouth and the mouth of the prophet? It was Moses who stated: “Oh that all God’s people would prophesy...” Under the new covenant we have that very privilege, yet few of us understand it.

Time to declare God’s Word This present decade is a time to declare the Word of the Lord. Psalm 29 describes the outcomes of declaring and prophesying, speaking in advance that which God has placed on your lips: • Verse 5 – His voice is so powerful that it breaks the cedars of Lebanon. Cedar being one of the most toxic of all woods. The creative power of the prophetic word removes all toxicity from your circumstances, releasing God’s pure destiny. • Verse 8 – His voice shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. Wilderness is a place of desolation, God’s prophetic word will release new life into every situation, bringing creativity to all forms of unproductivity.

• Verse 9 – His voice makes the deer give birth. By speaking and affirming the Word of the Lord into the heavens, the power to give birth is released. New revelation comes forth giving hope, meaning, and purpose to one’s destiny. • Verse 11 – May strength and peace be the blessing of God’s people. By heeding and obeying, by speaking, His voice becomes our strength and our peace. It is His voice that creates that inner peace and tranquility, giving strength to overcome each situation.

Understand the power that we have As we learn to understand the power and authority that each of us have residing within our spirit man, each one of us must practice aligning our authority together with the Word of the Lord on our tongue. We will then be taken into a new realm of creative power, a realm where we witness the shaking of the wilderness, the power to give birth, and the strength for each new day. This is the blessing of the prophetic word. 

Times of Uncertainty “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” – Romans 8:28

T

he coronavirus has not only affected people’s heath, but it has brought about uncertain times for most people in the marketplace. How we deal with this time will determine how quickly we pass through and how we come out the other side. Below are some thoughts of how we could face this season with the Kingdom uppermost in our minds and hearts:

• Before making any decisions regarding retrenchments or closing the company, we need to consider how the lives of others will be affected. • This is a season for true faith to arise and not to operate out of foolishness or presumption, yet we need to continue to sow in a famine. • Finally, it is to trust that the Lord will work all things for our good as we seek to establish His Kingdom in the marketplace.

• We need to look at life through the lens of the Kingdom and walk in the Spirit and not in the flesh. • Most importantly we need to spend time in prayer to be led by the Spirit before making any major decision or seek Godly counsel. • It is time to take stock of our situation and to face the reality of where we are so that we are not deceived by the enemy and continue down a destructive path. • Now is the time to make those difficult decisions to change the situations that we have put off for many years.

Faith is the Kingdom currency As Kingdom people, we need to be led by the Spirit and the Word of God, not to allow fear and anxiety to rule our hearts. Faith is the currency of the Kingdom. As we trust and believe in the Word of God, we need to expect that we will prosper in a time of famine. Finally, establish that the Lord and the Word of God is the only certainty in this time of uncertainty. 

A story about how a mother provides for her family

ike so many mothers in townships and informal settlements around South Africa, Khanyiswa Mguye was anxious about the kind of life her children were born into. “Like any other parent, I want my children to succeed and reach their full potential; but as an unemployed mother, this was so hard for me to achieve,” she explains. “I would constantly have arguments with my husband about the misuse of our finances, but because he was the sole breadwinner, I did not have a say in how he spent his money.”

This ultimately leads to the mobilisation of the broader community – a community that actively protects and upholds children’s rights for the betterment of their future. This seed was planted in Khanyiswa’s mind back in 2018, when she started her journey through change with us.

Counselling led to change

“After consulting Nomawonga, we got to the root of the problem: my daughter was affected by the disagreements that my husband and I were having about finances, and this was impacting hugely on her happiness. I had not realised that the tension in my home was affecting my daughter and had caused her stress that she could not articulate or contain. I then took my child to one of the social workers for counselling and worked harder at creating a peaceful home where she would be happy,” she adds.

Actively involved in transformation Without realising it, Khanyiswa had become an active parent at Beautiful Gate. Stretching herself further than ever This year, Khanyiswa is stretching herself even further and studying to become a Child and Youth Care Worker in the Family Strengthening Department. Her volunteering spirit has opened more doors, landing her the opportunity to actively participate in changing the lives of children in her community. Currently, she is one of the volunteers who are ensuring that children are kept safe and off the streets during the lockdown. Practicing the appropriate safety measures, she educates children on how to prevent contracting and spreading the coronavirus while keeping busy with multiple academic and cultural activities provided by BGSA’s donors as part of an ongoing Covid-19 Response Campaign.

2018 was an eventful year for Khanyiswa, because as soon as she successfully completed her parenting course, she eagerly volunteered to assist at BGSA’s annual Holiday Club. This position had her engaged in fulfilling activities like cooking for the children, and she was delighted to a be a part of something that brought smiles to the children’s faces. Khanyiswa concludes that her passion is unfolding before her eyes, “I owe my successes to God, because even I was unaware that I could be so involved in my community. I have always been shy and reserved unless I am in our worship and devotion sessions, and I sometimes notice that same spirit comes over me when I engage with parents and learners. I think it is because I relate very much, I know the desires we, as mothers, have for our children. This has made my work very personal, like my relationship with God – I know I will not fail.” Khanyiswa is, indeed “clothed in strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future. According to Kim, North Korean Christians have learnt to totally rely on God. “Everything is up to Him. Only He can keep us strong. We have learnt that secret believers cannot be afraid. “That’s why the support of our worldwide Christian family is so vital. You’re stopping the Church from starving – both spiritually and physically. Since she was a little girl, Kim Sang-Hwa had been trained to betray her family. But when the twelve-year-old girl discovered her parents’ secret Bible, she chose to begin her own dangerous journey of faith. Kim discovered the secret Church – an underground network that only survives thanks to the support of her Christian family outside North Korea.

Believers in North Korea are on a very dangerous journey. With its repressive state regime North Korea has been the world’s harshest persecutor of Christians since 2002. Followers of Jesus face hard labour and even death if their faith is discovered. Therefore, the support and prayers of their worldwide family are vital to help strengthen them.

hat greater privilege is there than to be able to share the Word of God with a dying world in need of Christ?” says South Africa native Gail Dippenaar, presenter of a programme for TWR in southern Africa called Reach Out. Changing lives in southern Africa The Monday-to-Friday programme is a chat around the Word of God. There is Bible teaching as well as interviews with missionaries and authors to share what God is doing through other people. After one of the weekly book giveaways, a listener who received a book on marriage emailed to say that he and his wife were so blessed by it that they were organising a marriage seminar to share what they learnt. On Fridays, Reach Out provides a relaxing format of listening to music and sharing verses of Scripture.

Landmark Constitutional Court ruling restores power to the people!

T

he Constitutional Court ruled parts of the Electoral Act unconstitutional – signalling a momentous shift in South African politics. The Court suspended the ruling for 24 months to provide Parliament time to amend the Act. This historic ruling will allow independent adults to stand as candidates in the Provincial and National Elections. Former Western Cape provincial MEC, Michael Louis, spearheaded the court challenge along with the “New Nation Movement” and welcomed the ruling as a victory for civil society. The Electoral Act permits only political parties to contest the National Elections. Under the current system, the electorate votes for a political party and the party bosses select the candidates. Typically, candidates selected by party bosses are beholden to them and not the voters. This system is abused by political parties to the detriment of the electorate and the nation. Parliament must now begin the process of amending the Electoral Act to include independent candidates in the General Elections. Public participation will be critical. The new system will fundamentally change the way voters elect provincial and national candidates and will hopefully enhance the democratic principle of government by the people. The inclusion of independent candidates in the General Elections will undoubtedly break the stranglehold of political parties in provincial legislatures and Parliament. In a genuine constituency system, voters in a particular voting district can elect a competent and trustworthy candidate to represent them in Parliament. The candidate then is directly accountable to the electorate in the voting district – and not a party boss. This system will therefore restore power to the people, which is the original intent of a constitutional democracy. 

my Grant is thankful for having loved ones by her side after she had the “really unique experience of having an unanticipated openheart surgery.” The singer revealed the scar from her procedure on Instagram. The 59-year-old previously shared she had a heart condition called partial anomalous pulmonary venous return (PAPVR) since birth, but her doctor only recently discovered it. “I know there is so much going on in the world right now. This is a crazy, broken, yet beautiful time. And in the midst of all of that – in the midst of all of our awareness and becoming and learning to love and see each other – I’ve had this really unique experience of having an unanticipated open heart surgery.” According to the Christian star, people from her past – and present – have gone out of their way to reach out and share their good wishes since her diagnosis. “People I worked with decades ago, people who have come to my concerts or listen to my music, my work family, people on social media, and my own friends and family all offered their prayers,” said Grant. “My recovery has honestly felt miraculous”, said Grant. “And so I want to say thank you to each person who said a prayer for me. Prayer changes everything.” Grant, who has been married to country singer Vince Gill for 20 years, is a sixtime Grammy winner with well-known crossover pop hits like Baby, Baby, Every Heartbeat and That’s What Love is For. She’s sold more than 30 million albums, including her five-time platinum 1991 record Heart in Motion that introduced her to a larger pop audience. 

Birthed-in-Africa ‘Way Maker’ song makes Billboard history

The conflict has been ongoing for 9 years since the Arab Spring

Way Maker,

A

worship song that we all know and love — but may not know about its African origins — made history this year by becoming the first song to ever have two covers in the Top 10 of the Christian songs category on the Billboard. Recent versions of Way Maker by Michael W Smith and Madelyn Berry were concurrently in the Top 10, while two other versions were in the Top 40, making a total of four versions of the same song composed by Nigerian Gospel singer Osinachi (Sinach) Okoro-Joseph in the Billboard Top 50. “Way Maker” also holds the top spot on the list of Top 100 songs ranked by Christian Copyright Licensing International, based on use in churches. Born and raised in Eastern Nigeria, Sinach, the 47-year-old senior worship Leader of Loveworld, first started singing for family and friends in the late 80s as part of her church choir under pastor Chris Oyakhilome’s leadership. Since this time, Sinach has grown to become an international Gospel singer, ministering around the world. Sinach’s original worship video for Way Maker, released in 2015, has been viewed over 151 million times but the song didn’t take off until Michael W Smith released it as a single in February last year. The song has been translated into 50 languages, and Sinach wrote that Way Maker has become “a theme song sung in many languages to bring hope and faith to many in distress during the Covid pandemic.” 

The Passion of the Christ sequel announced to release in 2021: The Resurrection

he 2004 hit movie The Passion of the Christ is soon to have a sequel, focussing on the events that occurred in the 3 days between the crucifixion and the Resurrection. The Passion of the Christ is the highest-grossing rated-R movie in the US, of all time, at $370,8 Million (R6,5 Billion)! Worldwide it grossed $611 Million (R10,7 Billion). Most importantly, it reached many souls around the world. Mel Gibson paid $30M (R523 Million) out of his own pocket for the production because no studio would take on the project. Jim Caviezel was warned not to take the role of Jesus because it would ruin his career. During the filming, Caviezel lost 45 pounds (20kg), was struck by lightning, accidentally scourged with a whip twice, leaving a 14inch scar, had his shoulder dislocated, and suffered from pneumonia and hypothermia from hanging mostly naked on a cross for hours outside. His body was so stressed and exhausted from playing the role that he had to have 2 open heart surgeries after the production! The crucifixion scene alone took 5 weeks of the 2-month filming time. Jim Caviezel proudly proclaims his faith in Christ amidst the godlessness of Hollywood. Thank God for people like him who will step out to do what might not sound “fun”, but it gets out the Word of God and the story of His salvation of mankind. 

Rare chance to say goodbye: Chilean hospital invites in Covid-19 patients’ families

D

octors in the Chilean capital of Santiago fought for weeks to save 76-year-old Don Jaime from the clutches of the coronavirus, but recognised they would lose the battle and invited his family into the hospital to say goodbye. Around the world, a need to slow the spread of the highly-contagious virus in hospitals has been placed above providing patients with the comfort of being with their families at the end of their lives. One of the greatest cruelties of an illness that has killed more than half a million people worldwide is that many have died alone, lucky to bid a digital goodbye via a screen. Medical chiefs at the University of Chile’s clinical hospital decided, however, to allow family visits and, wherever possible, create a space for a final farewell. Visitors are screened for the virus and issued with the same protective equipment used by medics, before being guided into

the sealed glass rooms where COVID-19 patients are housed. “We have always been a unit that advocates strongly not only for our patients but also for their families and we have continued to push for their presence at patients’ bedsides,” said Carlos Romero, head of the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. Dr Romero’s specialism is in short supply in Chile, and he is just one of six overseeing the care of all his hospital’s most critical patients. Each day at noon, however, he telephones patients’ families to update them, he told Reuters. “We want to know we have done everything to save a patient and if that’s no longer possible, we stay by their side when the end comes, we ensure they aren’t in pain, are calm, that their family is aware and, if possible, spends some time with them, even if just for a moment,” he said. Don Jaime has since passed away. 

Discovery of 1000-year-old cross points to ancient Christian presence in Pakistan’s Himalayas, offers a great encouragement for Pakistan’s Christians

A

n ancient marble cross, thought to be as much as 1200 years old, has been discovered in the foothills of the Karakoram mountain range in the heart of the Himalayas, providing evidence for Christianity’s early arrival in northern Pakistan from the Middle East. Three University of Baltistan researchers, led by vice-chancellor Muhammad Khan, and local mountaineers found the ancient 2.1 by 1.8 metre cross near their basecamp in the predominantly-Muslim region bordering with China, Afghanistan, and India. The “Kavardo Cross” is thought to be the largest discovered in the subcontinent and is estimated to weigh around four tonnes. “Praise the Lord, this makes me very joyful,” was the reaction of one Pakistani Christian leader. “It will be a great encouragement to Christians in Pakistan to show that our faith was here many, many generations ago, before Islam came. This is amazing news! I am looking forward to what the research outcome will reveal about Christianity in Pakistan,” he said. The location, near the village of Kavardo, was once on the “Silk Road” trade route that linked China and Pakistan. The research team noted that the way the cross has been carved is similar to traditional Buddhist carving, suggesting that the Christians who made it may have been converts. 

Local Christians have been reaching out to share the Gospel and offer practical help to neighbours struggling with poverty during the COVID-19 pandemic. The pastor came over and bought food, but he also sat down and showed him how to make chicken soup.” The pastor has reportedly been able to build a relationship with the boy and continue ministering to him. 

Promotion of

Transgenderism in our Public Schools —by Advocate Nadene Badenhorst

ccording to Genesis 1:27, God created human beings“male”and “female”. This scientific and self-evident distinction between the sexes had been recognised from time immemorial. Before dying, George Floyd had repeatedly told the officers that he could not breathe. Floyd’s death resulted in unprecedented protests around the world. Many of the protests evolved into full blown riots and violent destruction of property and cities.

Amending the law is not enough! Changing legislation alone is not enough. Increasing punitive legislative sentences alone cannot change hearts and minds. In 1990, this option was tried in Botswana in relation to rape with increased prison sentences. They found that the rape crime statistics went even higher. Hearts and minds must be changed. The whole justice system and judicial process must be interrogated and amended, along with the educational and social systems.

What makes these protests different?

Action must go beyond protests.

There must be a global pursuit of justice by all and a global determination to end all travesties of justice and discriminatory practices. Deliberate and intentional plans must be put in place in the nations to deal with all types of direct, systemic, and institutional roots of racism and discrimination.

Opportunities for all: The #ICantBreathe movement was

initiated because George Floyd was denied the opportunity to breathe. For discrimination to be uprooted, everyone must be given a chance to breathe. Opportunities in all aspects of life are to be given to all regardless of race, colour, or creed. The right to breathe and to live is a gift from God. Genesis 2:7 says “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being”. God gave man breath and we all have this right to breathe. We have been given this right by the Creator Himself. Anyone who would dare take away that right must prepare to ultimately answer to the One who gave life.

As Christians, it is our responsibility to fight for justice and to speak out against injustice. The Word instructs us to be in the world, but not of it. This world needs more of Jesus, more of His love.

Discrimination includes racism, xenophobia, and Afrophobia. As Africans, we need to interrogate any

discrimination that we may have against one another, as it is unacceptable. To condemn racism and yet show afrophobic and xenophobic behaviour ourselves, is hypocritical at best.

ogoeng Thomas Reetsang Mogoeng is the current Chief Justice of South Africa. He holds an important role in the landscape of South African politics, and is bringing Godly values back into government. He is a man who is fiercely committed to our country’s constitution, upholding the law, and is sold out to Jesus! ensure the Judiciary remains independent in the face of political intimidation?

Well for starters, every judge worth his or her salt ought to know that it’s an age-old problem for politicians, and even litigants in general, to be overly critical and sometimes even be irrational in their criticism of the judiciary whenever a decision goes against them. We must always be alert to the reality that members of the public and politicians who are unhappy with decisions will be critical. But, there is a line we must draw. When they seek to cross that line that they dare not go beyond, it becomes necessary for the leader of the judiciary to take a position and boldly declare “no more.” That’s what You were appointed Chief Justice in September we have tried to do. for its effectiveness in fighting corruption. To achieve that objective depends on the kind of leadership you have in every arm of the state. You need a very effective President, you need a very effective speaker and chair of the NCOP, and you need a very effective Chief Justice. When everybody who is occupying a critical leadership position, at a national level, has the wherewithal and commitment to do what their position requires them to do, they will in turn ensure that those under their authority will do what they are required to do. This makes it possible for corruption to be effectively rooted out. However, the judiciary doesn’t work alone in rooting out corruption. You’ve got the police, you’ve got the prosecuting authority, but you also have members of the public that need to cooperate with the broader criminal justice system to be able to root out corruption.

circumstances where they would not be able to meet because of travel and accommodation limitations. I am confident, particularly because we have seen the fulfilment of the prophetic word over South Africa and Africa. We’ve had unprecedented meetings about Covid-19 recently. The Chief Rabbi and I addressed the global community on what must be done for tangible and real justice to be obtained in our nations and across the world. This pandemic has revealed that nothing much will happen without desperate prayer by the Body of Christ.

For too long, the South African Church has been characterised by division.

I think it will be a brilliant time to be a South African, African, and a member of the global community as there will be a lot of change happening. There is a lot of sifting happening currently, and a lot of the shenanigans that have been hidden up to now will be exposed. I have never seen God move the way He has now. I believe so, and this is what highlights the critical role of the Body of Christ. This is the time to bury our ego’s, this is the time to bury our differences. We know that in every family there is bound to be differences, but we must never forget that we are children of one God. We must never forget what our Lord has told us in Luke 9:23, that each and every one of us who are serious about his or her walk with Christ must deny himself, carry his cross, and follow Jesus Christ daily. Justice through the lens of the Bible —by Bible Society South Africa

O

n Saturday, 6 June, the Bible Society of South Africa’s CEO, Rev Dirk Gevers, hosted the Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa, the Honourable Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng, who delivered an exceptional address on the topic Justice through the lens of the Bible. The Chief Justice had originally agreed to address delegates from around the world who would have visited Cape Town for an annual United Bible Societies conference, but the Covid-19 pandemic had put paid to that. However, by God’s providence, thousands of people had been able to hear this remarkable address as it was done virtually on the Bible Society’s Facebook page.

Passion for God’s Word

Biblical justice isn’t always possible

Honourable Mogoeng explained how it was not always possible, in some instances, to make judgements in a way that was consistent with the Bible. “It is important though, to appreciate that although the Bible and the God-kind of justice is the ideal justice, it is not always possible in our different countries to act in line with the Bible.” He expounded, “The Constitution you allow in your country is going to determine the kind of justice that you get.” Critically for us as citizens, it means we have some responsibility to ensure that amendments to the law are in line with godly principles. He also touched on the qualities that define a judge, that proper training should be given and this undergirded “Love is central to by love. The Bible proclaims that God is love. justice, and we must The Chief Justice reiterated, “Love is central ask the Lord always to to justice, and we must ask the Lord always give us the wisdom, the to give us the wisdom, the ability to judge.” ability to judge.” As South Africans, we can also contribute by praying in this regard.

Amid heightened anticipation, the Chief Justice’s passion for the both the Word and justice quickly became evident. He emphatically stated that, “The Bible is also at the centre of any form of real justice we can think about.” Quoting passages from various books of the Bible, the Chief Justice proceeded to expound how justice through the lens of the Bible rested on pillars underpinned by the godly principles of love, truth, peace, mercy, and generosity, the very qualities of God Himself.

Defining the justice system In defining the justice system, he said, “It is important that the fundamental principles that are in the Bible are embraced because there is no genuine justice system that would conflict with these principles.” Considering the context and basis of the administration of justice, he emphasised the point that, “The legal principles insist on mercy being factored into the administration of justice, restoration –

whatever has been lost must be bought back.”

A man who won’t compromise A true man of God, he concluded with words that echoed the sentiments first expressed by Esther, “If I perish, I perish, but I will not compromise on justice.” We are tremendously blessed as a nation to have a man of such calibre and integrity, and who seeks to uphold the standard of the Bible in such a way, at the helm of one of the arms of the State.

Bible Society promotes the relevance of the Bible The Bible Society of South Africa thus is equally elated that in celebrating the importance of the Word, that we advocate for the relevance of the Bible to each and every person who needs this book of life that is filled with good news. 
