TRAVEL DREAMS RE-VISITED 2020 - the year of going nowhere...SLOWLY! Despite a promising start with New Year’s resolutions and hope-filled aspirations sprouted on social media, 2020 was to be the year the world stopped. Never in the history of travel has an entire global industry ground to a halt...with millions of individuals locked in their homes for an indefinite time. In the beginning, the idea of a national lockdown was novel - a time to pause, reflect, regroup and bake banana bread! But the novelty soon wore off as people grew tired of being curtailed and cooped up at home. Travel plans were reluctantly abandoned as we waited each month with bated breath for the lockdown to lift... and the simple joys of visiting the beach, or hiking a mountain were rediscovered with each new “level” being announced. As a tour operator, JOY! Travel found ourselves in limbo - with all our international trips postponed until next year. At first hopeful that some tours could resume by the end of this year, it soon became clear to our team that 2020 was a “write-off” for any avid vacationer. As we waited out each month, staying abreast of new airline rules and quarantine regulations, we prayed...asking God to show us new ways to pivot the business. Sadly many travel agencies, tour operators and tourism players were forced to close shop permanently and countless more people lost their jobs - hopefully temporarily until all borders open up. We are cautiously optimistic that global tourism will resume early next year, but until then, our plan is to keep you occupied with our new project, Inspired Travel Magazine, a free bi-monthly digital publication designed to infuse your local travel dreams with new vigor and provide practical plans for your international 2021 holiday aspirations! Prepping for a pandemic

IS LEISURE TRAVEL PERMITTED FOR SOUTH AFRICANS?

Local (domestic) travel is fully functioning and bookable. International travel is tricky: some countries are permitting leisure or business / emergency-only travel....whilst other countries have mandatory quarantine periods in place. Although most of our JOY! Travel Bible trips have been postponed to 2021, we are confident that we will resume group tours next year from May. If you sign up for our newsletter database (info@joytravel.co.za) we will send you regular updates on tour dates, pricing and plans for the future.

COVID-19 travel rules are changing constantly so make sure you are up to date with the latest info before you fly!

WILL I NEED A COVID-19 VACCINE TO TRAVEL?

At this stage there is no official global ruling that a vaccine will be necessary for travel (though of course there is a lot of speculation). Having said that, we do not believe a vaccine will be necessary as many global travellers will reject the idea, and many Christians in particular will refuse to have a vaccine. Due to a global backlash against a vaccine, we anticipate that airports and governments will rather enforce a negative PCR COVID-19 test (not older than 72 hours before date of departure). But, to reiterate, no-one can say definitively what the future will look like as far as testing and vaccines are considered. We are hopeful that as countries defeat second wave infections and herd immunity is reached in populations, COVID-19 will not be a major hamper on international travel in 2021.

DO I NEED A NEGATIVE PCR COVID-19 TEST TO FLY? At present, South Africans (citizens and residents), as well as foreign national travellers, do not require a COVID-19 test to depart South Africa - but you may need a test to re-enter South Africa no older than 72 hours (and please bear in mind that if you are returning from a high-risk country there may be mandatory quarantine periods applicable). It is best to check with your travel agent / airline on their requirements.


ISN’T MY RISK OF CONTRACTING CORONA-VIRUS HIGHER ON BOARD AN AIRCRAFT? Scientific research has shown that the chances of being infected on a flight are extremely low (less than 1% chance). There have been millions of flights since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak resulting in less than 50 confirmed cases of transmission in-flight. There are several reasons why this is the case: Seating position on board / high seat backs that prohibit ease transmission / HEPA filter system / high airflow rate. The airflow in an aircraft (from ceiling to floor) is less conductive to droplet spread than other similar environments or modes of transport. Tests have shown that HEPA filters are 99.9% effective at removing viruses and bacteria. Cabin air is exchanged every 2-3 minutes.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I ARRIVE AT MY HOLIDAY / BUSINESS DESTINATION AND I TEST POSITIVE IN THE AIRPORT? At present, if a traveller arrives in a country that conducts airport screening and COVID-19 testing, and if that traveller tests positive, they will either (a) be placed into a government quarantine facility at their own cost in that country, or (b) will allowed to quarantine at a selection of COVID-19 approved hotels of their choice in that nation at their own cost for 14 days or until such time they re-test negative. Rules differ by country, so always pre-check.

Though not the official capital of Turkey, Istanbul is most certainly the people’s capital - frequented by cruise ships, day trips, backpackers and businessmen. With Turkish Airlines positioning Istanbul as its hub, more than 300 destinations can be connected to through the new airport - making this city the forerunner in air travel dominance. Cleverly, the Turkish government has teamed up with its national carrier to offer complimentary day trips: free city tours to all the main attractions. Their hope - that a taste of this Turkish Delight will draw you back for a longer stay the next time round and open your eyes to the wonder of Istanbul. A COSMOPOLITAN HUB My eyes were certainly opened the first time I toured Istanbul. Far from being the strict religious Islamic regime whose citizens are all

enrobed in black cloth, Turkey functions as a modern, first world country, where ancient ruins sit side by side with modern trains and cruise terminals. Although Turkey is one of the largest Islamic countries by geography and has more mosques per capita than other countries in the Levant, it is a secular Muslim state - which means that its citizens are not mandated to follow Quranic law - a sharp departure from her Arab neighbours in Saudi Arabia. Interestingly, Turks are not Arabs (though many tourists assume otherwise), but rather a varied descent of Persian, Assyrian, Mongolian, Kurdish, Greek, Armenian and other roots. But don’t e fooled - the Turkish people are proud of their unique heritage, patriotic and passionate about their food, culture and customs. A CONTESTED HISTORY Despite a bloodied history with multiple Ottoman and Crusader armies warring for geographical dominion, the people of Turkey want peace. The same cannot be said of their megalomaniacal leader, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Out of touch with the wishes of the people, he has ensconced himself in power and constantly flouts political protocols - violating principles of modern diplomacy and antagonising his constituents. Despite his bad behaviour though,

Oh Istanbul! You have captured the hearts of poets, painters, and philosophers. Turkey is a tourist-friendly country and Erdoğan’s regime poses no safety risk to the average traveller. or traveller, author, educator and speaker Daniella Djan, life changed drastically in 2004, when as a young student she was diagnosed with lupus. The first symptoms of lupus usually occur somewhere between the teen years and the 30s and may be mild, severe, sporadic, or continual. Lupus is a systemic autoimmune disease that occurs when your body’s immune system attacks your own tissues and organs. Inflammation caused by lupus can affect many different body systems — including your joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart and lungs. Symptoms vary but can include fatigue, joint pain, rash and fever. These can periodically get worse (flare up) and then improve. While there’s no cure for lupus, current treatments focus on improving quality of life through controlling symptoms and minimising flare-ups. This begins with lifestyle modifications, including sun protection and diet.

HER CONDITION DOES NOT HOLD HER BACK Although lupus can completely damage one’s will to live, Daniella has chosen to thrive and inspire others through

Q. When were you diagnosed with lupus? I was diagnosed in 2004 in my first year at Rhodes University. I didn’t even know what lupus was. The symptoms started and intensified over four years before I was diagnosed. The symptoms included extreme fatigue; sore, stiff joints; hair loss; weight loss; rashes on my skin; sensitivity to the sun; depression and the like.

Q. What is most challenging about the condition? Having to explain to people who do not understand the major physical and psychosocial implications of having this invisible disease. It can be a struggle explaining why you are often tired, sickly or why I take handfuls of medication daily.

Q. What do you wish other people knew about how to treat those living with lupus? Lupus is an extremely complicated and unpredictable disease. I do not expect everyone to understand how it affects my daily life, but to empathize and show that they care by being there even if they have no words or solutions.

Q. What word of encouragement can you share to those who feel defeated? I often question God on why I have this illness. There are some things we will not fully understand but that shouldn’t sway us because God is Sovereign, and in even the darkest situation, He is in control. He makes ALL things work together for our good, because we love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). That gives me hope, and I believe hope is not a feeling, but a focus. We all have challenges of different kinds, and yes, lupus is an enormous challenge to have, but seeing things God’s way and trusting His process will guarantee sure freedom. In John 9:4 Jesus said: “I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.” This tells us that our focus should be on accomplishing what God has called us to do on earth, and when we are fierce about pursuing that, nothing can hinder His plan and purposes for our lives, not even sickness or challenges.

Q. Finally, when lockdown is over, borders are fully opened and we can all flys freely, where are you hoping to travel to? Our Top 3 Activities For Fashionistas During Lockdown If you’re an outgoing fashionista, we know that you might be driving yourself insane from social distancing at home all day and night in light of the national lockdown in South Africa. 1. Style Your Outfits It is really easy to give up on your appearance when you’re holed up in the house all day and night – but don’t give in to the horrible temptation! 2. Clean Out Your Closet Everyone has experienced a point in their lives where their closet has been a mess. And even if your cupboards are always neatly packed, we’re sure there are some items of clothing and accessories that either do not fit your body as well or they don’t fit current fashion anymore! Now is the perfect time to sift through your closet and finally get rid of those weird items in your wardrobe.

Yet some travellers seem to breeze through security, travel light and enjoy the experience, whilst others are scratching in cavernous handbags, stressing about lost boarding passes and getting frustrated with clunky cases. A streamlined and stress-free airport experience starts off with your LUGGAGE! Our tips below are guaranteed to improve your travel journey.

PACKING CUBES

A HANDS-FREE SLING BAG

Whoever invented the packing cube should be given an award for organisation! These little pouches make travelling (and staying in multiple hotels) so easy! Pack them by item (eg: underwear in one, shirts in another) or pack by day - on tour you just “grab and go”. I like to roll my clothes inside the cubes, but folding items also works. Packing cubes will help to keep your suitcase organised and be much easier to find things in a hurry. You can buy them online, Dischem and any luggage shop.

TSA LOCK (NO KEYS!) A TSA lock is a specific lock that airport officials can open easily if they need to search your case. By using a TSA lock, your lock wont get cut off - leaving your suitcase vulnerable. Choose a combination lock (with no keys) as this is just one less thing to find in a rush!

he Greater Hermanus area is situated between two large lagoons namely the Botrivier Lagoon on the western side and the Kleinrivier Lagoon to the eastern side, with the small Onrus Lagoon in the middle. It consists of various mini regions such as Fisherhaven, Hawston, Vermont, Onrus, Sandbaai, Hemel en Aarde Valley, Mount Pleasant, Zwelihle and Hermanus. A diversity of peoples live harmoniously in this exquisitely beautiful heart of the Cape Whale Coast. The town of Hermanus “proper” meanders along the western cove of Walker Bay between magnificent sea cliffs and the foot of the Olifantsberg Mountains. Hermanus Pieters, an itinerant teacher of Caledon farmers’ children, was the first permanent resident in the

early 1800s. Having come across a fresh spring and greener pastures he settled on the shore of this enchanting bay. The spring came to be known as Hermanuspietersfontein but was shortened to Hermanus when municipal status was given to the town in 1904. There is a telescope above the Old Harbour for visitors to see the giant visitors when they are far out in the bay. The Whale House presents daily slide shows throughout the year explaining the life cycle of our fascinating annual visitors, the Southern Right Whales.


The beauty and magic of Hermanus has attracted many famous artists. The town has thus become home to a number of galleries that house both local and international works. The village holds several festivals and events every year, including an annual Passion Play in the Old Harbour; celebrates the arrival of the whales in the bay with the Whale Festival; offers some of the best local and national theatre productions (mainly in Afrikaans) at the Kalfiefees; serves the most glorious seafood at the Hawston Sea Festival (December); and chases away winter chills at the Food and Wine Fair (July) with delicious cuisine and delectable wines from over 60 exhibitors. HERMANUS AND ITS SURROUNDS OFFER ACCOMMODATION FOR MOST BUDGETS! Tourism is the cornerstone of Hermanus’ economy. Visitors have an excellent selection of accommodation and restaurants to choose from. A RICH HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHICAL DIVERSITY Close by is Hawston, which nestles in a cove at Mudge Point. It is one of the oldest settlements in Greater Hermanus and was designated a “coloured” area by the former government. Hawston has some of the best sea views in the area and has many buildings of historical interest. It has a long stretch of beautiful beach, Sandown Bay, where the wild horses can be spotted in the area surrounding the lagoon. The eastern side of the beach, near Hawston Harbour, is a popular surfing spot. The recently developed Abalone Village Tours of Hawston can be arranged through the Hermanus Tourism Bureau. Vermont and Onrus River are situated on the coast where the Onrus River runs into the sea through the small Onrus lagoon. Though the Onrus River, which rises in the Babilonstoring mountains, is little more than 10km long, it was regarded by the Dutch settlers who first saw it as restless and they named it Onrust, together with the fact that along its banks higher up in the valley a leper colony was established who used the water for washing until 1845.

Mount Pleasant, another area formerly classified “coloured”, lies at the western entrance to Hermanus. It is the smallest subsection of Hermanus and is infused with bright colours of pink, turquoise, blue and green by Operation Preen, a community collaboration to clean and paint the houses in the area.

ust before Hermanus (if approaching from Cape Town), along Hemel-en-Aarde Road you enter the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, widely regarded as one of the most exciting wine areas in South Africa and one of the most beautiful. Challah Bread

INGREDIENTS 6 cups plain flour (plus extra for kneading out the dough) 2 cups lukewarm water 6 tsp dried yeast (2 sachets) ¾ cup sugar 1½ tbsp salt 2 eggs beaten and 1 extra egg for glazing ½ cup vegetable oil

Kristen’s Tip Challah makes the most wonderful French toast. Simply dip a slice of Challah into a mixture of 2 beaten eggs and a splash of milk. Fry on both sides in very shallow oil until golden and crispy. Serve with cream cheese and lemon curd.

Preheat the oven to 180°C/165°C/Gas mark 4 Put the flour into a large bowl. Make a large well in the flour and add the warm water into the well. Add the yeast and only ½ cup of sugar. Stir the yeast and water in the well until combined. Set aside until the yeast begins to foam. Add the salt and remaining sugar (¼ cup) to the well and mix. Wait another 10 minutes until the mixture begins to foam. In a separate bowl, beat the 2 eggs and oil together. Add this egg mixture to the flour mixture, and gradually incorporate the two mixtures. Once the mixture is combined, tip onto a floured surface and knead the dough. If the dough is too sticky, slowly add extra flour, 1 tbsp at a time. Knead until the dough become smooth (it is normal for it to still remain sticky). In a large bowl add some flour to coat the bowl (this is to ensure that the dough does not stick to the bowl). Place the dough into a bowl and cover with a damp tea towel. Set aside in a sunny or warm spot and allow the dough to rise until it has doubled in size. This usually takes a few hours. When the dough has risen, flour your surface and tip out the dough. Knead the dough once again. Divide your dough into 2 balls. For each loaf, separate the dough into the strands and braid (three or five strands are the norm). Place your braided challah onto a paper-lined baking tray and allow them to rise until they have once again doubled in size (this step is dependent on how much time you have, but 30 to 45 minutes is usually enough). In a cup, beat the last egg, and add approximately 1 tbsp of water to slightly thin the egg wash. Brush the challah with the egg wash. If you wish to add toppings to your challah such as sugar, sesame or poppy seeds, now would be the time to do so. Finally, bake your challah for 30 to 35 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the baking tray and allow to cool.

Israel was on my radar but I had always imagined myself doing a pilgrimage later on in life, but to my delight, was given the opportunity at a young age in 2007 to visit the Holy

A Holy Land

Land as part of a Christian media tour. In my youthful ignorance I had little idea of what awaited me, as my initial expectation was of a hot, dry and barren desert land. This was the days before facebook and weather apps, so instead of researching the weather for our trip in February (one of the coldest months of the year!) I packed what I thought was befitting for a desert - shorts, dresses, a bikini and sandals! FOND MEMORIES OF MY FIRST ISRAEL TOUR Luckily, when seeing my outfit for the plane and my sparse summery suitcase, my mom casually suggested I pack more “sensible” clothing such as a warm winter coat, takkies, jeans and a scarf. Stubbornly I insisted that it would be “hot in a desert mom” but relented by throwing on a brown puffer jacket and pink scarf at the last minute. Well - needless to say - the icy air took my breath away as the plane touched down and we disembarked. After two nights of shivering in my summer pajamas, I casually asked our guide if we could “swing past a shopping mall” so that I could purchase a few items. He looked at be bemused (probably wasn’t the first time he had such a Western request) and said Jackie, we are in the middle of Jericho - where do you see a shopping mall? (As a seasoned Israel tour chaperone, I laugh now at the ridiculousness of the request!) Unsurprisingly, in every photo from that trip I was wearing the same brown jacket and pink scarf, and at night borrowing gloves and cranking the heater up in my room! Despite the arctic conditions, that debut tour set flame to an undiscovered destiny as I developed an enduring passion for the Holy Land. DON’T PUT OFF YOUR DREAM - BOOK A PILGRIMAGE TOUR SOONEST! Given the times we live in, and the signs of imminence of the Lord’s return, why would anyone (who has the health or financial means) not visit the birthplace of their faith? Start saving now and planning your tour - I have seen so many people “put it off til next year”, but next year never comes. If 2020 has shown us anything, it is that the future is never guaranteed and that we must enjoy each day for itself (and besides, our exchange rate worsens each year...so don’t delay!). WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO The ideal time to do a tour is from late April through May, early June, September and October when the weather is temperate. Mid June-August is their hottest months, whilst mid November to February is their winter. Many people can only take leave at the end of a year, so if you have to go in December you will still enjoy yourself (just pack gloves!) as Bethlehem and some Christian Arab sites boast a festive Christmas atmosphere. Our December holiday tour is one of our most popular, and the country is relatively empty, which allows more time for prayer and worship at the sites. A tour to Israel is what you make of it – the times of prayer, worship and teaching are the true highlights, but so too the immersive experiences of culture, food and engagement with locals. The hotel grading system in the Middle East is inferior to what we know in South Africa, so choose your tour company wisely. Israel is an expensive country, so you get what you pay for - cheap often equals threadbare and dingy...rather spend a little more and be comfortable. Often when we get enquiries, people say “I want to see Israel but I am not a tour person”. I get that - the idea of being in a group with strangers and forced into set meal times and itineraries can be off putting to the individual who likes his space. However, there is something significant that happens when you tour the Holy Land in a Christian group... the camaraderie, fellowship and shared experiences move your heart and enhance your pilgrimage. Also, to do Israel without a full time guide is unthinkable - you will miss so much if you simply “breeze through” the sites without explanation and context. Finally, a pastor adds a vital ministry and teaching element to your tour - which is why we always take learned Bible teachers who are able to draw out the Hebraic truths in the parables and unpack the teachings that tie in the Bible sites in Israel to the Word. Our ministry times elevate your tour to a life-changing experience rather than just a “commercial tour of Israel”. (Not all tours include a pastor, so again research carefully and always compare apples to apples when looking at prices). SWIM AND TAN ON THE BEACHES OF TEL AVIV With long sunny days and soft white sand, the beaches back up onto the warm water of the Mediterranean. VISIT THE MOST IMPORTANT HOLY SITES IN JERUSALEM OLD CITY Religion is an integral feature of Israel and faith has played a central role in shaping Israel’s history as well as the current culture and lifestyle. Dating back to the late 1800’s, the Machane Yehuda Market began as a simple marketplace for locals where Arab farmers and Jewish housewives haggled over prices. Shop in the day for fresh goods, or take a turn in the evening when the shuk transforms into a vibrant meeting place with music and bars.

When visiting a country rich in archeology and history, a guide is essential. Choose the wrong one, and you will be bored and frustrated with too little or too much info. Choose the right one, and your tour is transformed into an insightful and interesting experience. At JOY! Travel we take great care in selecting expert guides who bring the stories of the stones to life. As Israel is a pilgrimage for so many, we work with Christian Arab and Jewish guides who share the same values and a passion for God’s Word. The guides and the drivers become like family on a tour, spending days traversing the country with you and sharing meals together on the road and in the hotels. Having worked with hundreds of guides all over the world, I am convinced that Iyad (my chief guide in Israel) is one of the best. His knowledge, warmth and patience is unparalleled and having toured together for a decade, his jokes are still funny! We zoomed for a catchup recently, as it will be a while until he guides a JOY! Tour again in 2021.

Favourite place in Israel? Being in Galilee, especially during our Spring season is fabulous. Being in major cities like for example Jerusalem, is another experience and this is why all of the Holy Land with completely different experiences - to me or even for visitors - is nice. The different stories to be told from a Biblical point view and the daily lives of people make every place special. So in another words, I personally love it all, no matter where you are in Galilee, Judea or by coastal area and the Dead Sea.

You live in Bethlehem... Yes, all my life here. Living in Bethlehem is completely different from any other places in Israel. One difficulty comes from city being surrounded by the political wall or fence and having to pass through the check point from Bethlehem side to Israel side every day. It is very crowded in the morning hours with thousands of people trying to cross over to their jobs in Israel. Another difficult addition is that we as the Christians are the minority in Bethlehem, with Moslems as majority for the last half century due to different reasons. Sometimes this creates religious conflict, but we have to live in such circumstances - making us stronger in our beliefs.

Toughest part of the job?

I have been guiding (25 years) longer than I have been married (20 years!) I started out in 1995 and speak English, Arabic and Hebrew, which I use all the time in my guide work. My love for history and people is why I became a guide.

I enjoy my job very much because it is not like any other job you do only to earn money. At the end of the day, I have to earn but I am sharing my ministry, my beliefs, and the love of the Lord with people coming to see and to deepen their belief in Jesus by visiting the Holy Land. It is not like any other job and when I can share my ministry with believers who saved a lot of money to visit this beautiful Holy Land, I love it and will do it as long as I can, God willing.

The most difficult part of my job comes from very crowded places, raining days and cold or very hot weather!


One of my favourite hobbies is to collect “USEFUL” SOUVENIRS from the countries I visit.
