HAPPY ANNIVERSARY ALL!

Twenty years ago, I moved to Orange County to savor the lifestyle of living near the beach with ocean air coming in my windows daily. At the time I lived in Crystal Cove, and it was indeed an ideal location for a new mom and a jogging stroller. I have countless memories of those years raising my son in Newport Coast and exploring all the great local gems—from the strand at Huntington Beach on a beach cruiser to main beach at Corona Del Mar with a Zinc Café picnic to shopping the charming boutiques of Laguna to visiting sea lions at the harbor in Dana Point.

Launching ICONIC LIFE magazine one year ago this month brought the memories all back instantly, and the opportunity to continue to explore and share the stories of these OC communities is what brings us joy as we celebrate Living Beautifully. I’ve been reunited with old friends and made so many new ones.

In this issue, we celebrate what it means to enjoy the ICONIC local stops in Laguna Beach with a first-person perspective from our editor Kaitlyn Beickel, who knows like I do that the historic and enduring local businesses and restaurants are the lifeforce of any community.

Speaking of Laguna, this issue celebrates the 20th anniversary of truly my favorite hotel property in the United States, Montage Laguna Beach. Congratulations to the entire Montage team for creating an ICONIC international brand that started right here. I even have a group of friends that reunite annually at Montage Laguna for what we call the Montage Entourage. Thank you to my dear friend Karen for that inspired nickname and countless memories.

It’s our honor to celebrate the Montage on our cover this issue, showcasing the ICONIC pool that is unmistakably Montage, and which served as the location for our entire “get ready for summer” fashion shoot with my amazing team. I’m so proud of the creativity and commitment that goes into producing each cover with original concepts and photography.

As we move into the summer months, keep your eyes open! You may see me enjoying brunch at Anastasia in my favorite ICONIC beach town Laguna, sitting poolside at Montage or enjoying some of my favorite views from Outer Reef at Laguna Cliffs to Hotel Laguna to Crystal Cove State Beach. I hope you take time to enjoy the view, too!

Thank you for reading and supporting ICONIC LIFE! I know you have favorites, too! I’d love to hear from you at renee@iconiclife.com.

NEW BEGINNINGS

The start of something new always brings feelings of excitement, wonder and inspiration. As I begin the next chapter of my life as the editor-in-chief of ICONIC LIFE Magazine, I can’t help but to reflect on the journey that brought me here— and how that journey was filled with countless new beginnings.

When I started as a freelance writer for ICONIC LIFE in May of 2021, only in my wildest dreams did I expect to later become the editor-in-chief. That new beginning, meeting publisher Renee Dee and writing about the best-of-the-best luxury experiences set me on a path of exceptional growth, learning and change that I am forever grateful for. As our publisher likes to say, you can’t see new vistas if you stand in the same place.

In November 2021, I embarked on another new beginning, joining the ICONIC LIFE team full-time as the editorial and communications manager. I jumped into the luxury publishing world head-first, and I learned a ton about subjects that only a special few get to enjoy on the job—like the ins and outs of planning fashion photo shoots, how to arrange a gorgeous floral bouquet and the joys of touring a freshly-designed luxury estate.

Just seven short months into working with the team full-time, in May 2022, ICONIC LIFE Magazine entered a new chapter with the launch of the Orange County print edition. As we enter our second year of publishing in OC, I look back with gratitude at the warm welcome we received.

It’s an honor to share the stories of the people who make Orange County such a special place, and to share the message of what it means to truly Live Beautifully with readers. That new beginning of launching our first print issue in Orange County will forever stick with me as a special moment in time, and I am so grateful to continue to be a part of such an incredible community.

Now, as I begin my next adventure as editor-in-chief, I don’t know exactly what the future holds, but I do know it will be a time of growth, learning and new experiences. I am excited for you all to enjoy the editorial stories I wrote for this issue, spanning from the mental health benefits of playing golf and the artistry of glass blowing, to the shores of Laguna Beach.

So, take that leap, put yourself out there, and see where your next new beginning takes you, because you never know where your path will lead.

All my best,

In this latest collection, Sands uses materials and manufacturing techniques the eyewear industry has never seen before, with the goal to design a collection for those who are unafraid of the future. Each piece is meticulously crafted in Japan, from solid 925 sterling silver trim with genuine 18k gold and palladium—the most expensive materials in the world.

Sporting some of the most unique materials, they also feature a modern design aesthetic with sleek lines and vibrant colors, making them perfect for dressing up or down depending on your desired look. From classic aviators to trendy cat-eyes and everything in between, anyone can find their ideal style.

Designer, artist and glass blower John Pomp takes his craft seriously, creating each functional work of art from scratch with the help of partner Anne Pomp and a team of more than 50 creatives. Focusing on lighting and furniture designs, John Pomp Studios takes a sculptural, experimental approach to design.

Pomp started out as a traditional artist with an interest in painting, but quickly found magic in glass blowing after just one class.

“That’s all I wanted to do for the rest of my life, I fell madly in love with glass,” Pomp says.

Pomp’s work combines molten glass, warped metal and refracted light to create his imaginative and organic forms. Each piece is made from scratch in his 65,000 square foot Philadelphia studio using a combination of old-world craftsmanship and a modern approach.

“It’s like my own Disneyland, I created my dream shop,” Pomp says. “We’re very fortunate to be there, to be blowing all of our glass and casting glass. We have a full metal shop, we make all of our own lighting parts and we manufacture everything with a team of engineers.”

“We are really proud to say that we make everything inside of our facility, which is really cool because everything that we do is customizable,“ he adds.

Pomp’s passion for molten glass and love for the fire has been a driving inspiration throughout his illustrious career, creating unique collections since 1999. One of the newest John Pomp Studios collections is the Rift Collection, which includes an impressive 12-foot glass table.

“It has about 1,400 pounds of glass on it,” Pomp explains. “We built these kilns four years ago, because there’s no kilns big enough to make glass like this, only to debut these dining tables in November. It took a long time because you not only have to build the kilns but also to develop the process.”

Inspired by other-wordly designs, the Rift Collection focuses on furniture design that embrace primitive forms crafted in a modern way.

“I was looking at a lot of futurists and a lot of primitivism and taking both forms and reinventing them by adding new materials,” Pomp says.

You can find pieces from John Pomp Studios in showrooms across the U.S. and internationally, and at the artist’s new flagship showroom.

“We just opened our own New York City showroom at the New York Design Center, on the 12th floor,” Pomp says. “We have a 4,000 square foot showroom where I’m really creating a world of glass and glasslike materials.”

Golfing FORE Your Mental Health

We all know that playing a round of golf makes us feel good, but how exactly does it benefit our mental health?

Yes, you read that right, there’s another reason to head to the green—playing golf is actually a form of self-care that benefits your mental health.

STRESS RELIEF

“Being in the great outdoors naturally has a multitude of mental health benefits, including naturally lowering your anxiety and reducing the effects of depression,” Haidan Smith says, the director of International Trade at SurprizeShop, a retailer of women’s golfing accessories and apparel. “While you might not think golf is a good workout—a good game never feels like one—the endorphins released by the low impact exercise not only reduce pain, but provide relief for emotional stress.”

“In addition, if you feel frustrated and want to get your aggression out, picking up a golf club and hitting a ball as far as you can is one of the greatest ways to relax,” she added.

IMPROVED CONFIDENCE

There’s no better confidence booster than hitting a hole-in-one. By getting out of the house and playing golf regularly, an improvement in your game over time will help boost your self-esteem. With all of the exercise involved with golf, you may even feel more confident in your appearance after playing.

BETTER SLEEP

When you sleep better, you feel better, and there’s no doubt that a long game of golf can end with you feeling tired—or even downright exhausted.

“And, the better your sleep, the better your golf. Studies have shown that a bad night’s rest can actually raise your handicap, so you should strive for some serious ZZZ’s before any big games,” Smith says.

SOCIAL INTERACTIONS

We all need friends for our personal happiness and fulfillment in life, and one of the best ways to meet like-minded people is to spend time in a place that amplifies your interests—in this case, that place being the golf club. Whether you connect with a fellow golfer over the latest tournament scores or by inviting a new coworker out for a round of golf, the social nature of golf can help ward off feelings of loneliness, increase your happiness and even sharpen your mind.

HAPPINESS

As you play golf, the physical exercise leads to a release of important endorphins in your brain, producing a mood-boosting effect. So, the next time you’re feeling down, pick up your golf bag and head to the green to de-stress and find feelings of happiness and joy.

CHEF TONY

“I love the freedom to truly express myself through my food, I love seeing the reaction whenever a client takes the first bite,” Chef Tony says. “But what I love the most is when everything on the plate is finished, it’s the best feeling ever.”

CHEF JOHN

“What I love about working with Cheferbly is that it’s always new, it’s always different,” Chef John says. “You’re in a different location, you get to change the menu so you’re not constantly making the same item over and over.”

Chef John is a seasoned culinary professional with more than 10 years of experience in the restaurant industry. He began his career by attending culinary school at the Art Institute of Orange County while working at notable restaurants such as Charlie Palmer, Catal Restaurant, Anqi Gourmet Bistro and Tiato Catering. In 2013, he began working with Chef Carlos Salgado to open Taco Maria, which later received a Michelin Star in 2019. This experience and mentorship further inspired his culinary career. Chef John was later recruited as the executive chef of Royal Hen in Newport Beach, where he earned recognition from the Orange County Register for his culinary skills and was awarded “Burger of the Year” in 2017 and “Best Brunch Menu” by LOCAL Magazine. In 2019, he took on a leading role as the executive chef to open Trenta Pizza e Cucina, which has since gained vast attention in Orange County for its creative pizzas and authentic pasta dishes.

After opening his last restaurant in 2019, Chef John’s current focus is providing amazing food to amazing people with private dining, catering and restaurant consulting.

“I’ve been in restaurants for a while, and with the whole pandemic, I decided to branch out and become a private chef,” Chef John says. “I’ve always done catering, so stepping into being a private chef was a very easy transition,” Chef John says.

Spread Joy… and Cheese

44 ICONICLIFE.COM

Calling charcuterie lovers! Ever

cut the cheese?

If you love cheese, you likely already have a set of delicate and sturdy cheese knives. And perhaps, you’ve mastered creating an irresistible charcuterie spread with artfully arranged meats, fruits and cheeses. But, do you know how to use each of those cheese knives for their intended purpose and which cheeses to pair them with?

SOFT CHEESE KNIFE

A soft cheese knife is exactly what it sounds like—a knife specifically designed for optimal slicing a soft cheese like mozzarella, brie or gorgonzola. Because these types of cheeses are more likely to stick to your utensil, soft cheese knives often have holes in them or are thinner so that there’s less surface area for the cheese to get stuck.

PRONGED CHEESE KNIFE

The pronged tip and narrowness of this cheese knife make it the perfect tool for slicing and serving most varieties of cheeses. While it’s likely too thick to efficiently cut a soft cheese, this knife is perfect for a semi-soft cheese, such as havarti, or a hard cheese like aged cheddar.

SPADE KNIFE

The pointed edge of the spade knife is what sets it apart from the rest when cutting hard cheeses. Also called a parmesan knife, the pointed edge is ideal for chipping away at hard rinds—like a wheel of parmesan cheese.

CHISEL KNIFE

This is the knife in your collection that is flat and wide with a sharp edge at the top. The chisel knife, or flat cheese knife, is used for creating vertical slices of semi-hard and hard cheeses by applying force in a downward motion. It can also be used to cut crumbly cheeses like gorgonzola, and then spread with the flat side of the blade.

CHEESE FORK

While not technically a knife, the double-pronged cheese fork is included with most cheese knife sets and is used to hold cheeses in place while you cut them with a knife. It can also be used on a charcuterie board for transferring pieces of cheese, olives or fruit to a plate.

Once Upon a House in Hollywood

46 ICONICLIFE.COM
A spectacular site with Hollywood history provided challenges that architect Paul McClean was eager to conquer.
47 ICONICLIFE.COM
Photography by Manolo Langis

The Hollywood Hills have long been an enclave for Hollywood royalty. Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, James Dean and a who’s who of other notables have called the central Los Angeles neighborhood home through the decades. And though newer homeowners might be inclined to preserve some of the region’s history (who wouldn’t want to reside within Yvette Mimieux’s former Bel Air estate, inspired by the glistening villas found on Italy’s Amalfi Coast), modern conveniences and current engineering standards have necessitated remodels and renovations of these beautiful homes.

Current homeowners and new buyers often turn to Paul McClean, whose eponymous firm is one of the leading contemporary residential design firms in Southern

48 ICONICLIFE.COM

California. Established in 2000, McClean Design strives for excellence, pushing boundaries with unique spaces that are connected to their environment and providing clients and their families a dwelling of composure within a modern society.

His work is synonymous with the quintessential California lifestyle, exercised through clean architectural lines, a sophisticated material aesthetic and established relationships with leading builders and designers. McClean has become the go-to architect for celebrity clientele such as Beyoncé, Jay Z and Calvin Klein. With projects ranging in size from 3,500 to well above 50,000 square feet, McClean’s homes are tailor-made to fit his clients’ varying lifestyles.

His latest Hollywood Hills project provided a unique opportunity to rework a promontory lot to take advantage of the 270-degree views of the entire Los Angeles Basin. A spectacular site with its own fabled Hollywood

49 ICONICLIFE.COM
50 ICONICLIFE.COM

history (Ronald and Nancy Reagan once lived in the original structure), the lot provided several challenges that McClean was ready to tackle.

“The biggest challenges were also some of the most enjoyable parts of the project,” says McClean, who grew up in Ireland where he attended the Dublin Institute of Technology, graduating with honors in architecture in 1994. “The slope created a unique constraint of fitting the program. We had to get creative with the whole project team to come up with how we could fit in the building envelope, which resulted in a basement perfect for entertaining, a stand-out staircase at the entry, and the list goes on. Many consider constraints a negative but to us, they’re part of the fun.”

The client (a large Italian family that would use the home as a respite from their life in Canada) wanted to build a large home with great potential for entertaining, especially outdoors. The lower pad of the parcel inspired the original idea for the project: a glass living space, surrounded by water on three sides, reflecting the surrounding cityscape.

“Our initial goal was to provide a house that focused on entertaining for a family, while balancing the client’s desire of privacy and open views of the city,” says

51 ICONICLIFE.COM

McClean, who worked with Sarah McKay of design firm Colabhouse on the interiors. “Every wall, tree and shrub were strategically placed to ensure the desired outward views were not blocked, while undesired inward views from the street were blocked.”

The front entry is screened by marble slats to provide both privacy and shade. Passing through, the interior opens up to the landscape behind the property with a two-story glass wall overlooking a courtyard garden where a green marble waterfall surrounded by dense foliage spills into a basement-level water basin. To the east are the main living spaces; to the west are an office, the main staircase and a guest bedroom.

The main living and dining space projects out onto the peninsula with the pool feature wrapping on three sides. The family kitchen and breakfast area open both to the pool and to the verdant garden behind the house. A family room is tucked into the garden space with a see-through fireplace that can be enjoyed both from the lounge and the garden. The upper level contains the main bedroom and two additional suites. A large, landscaped roof garden over the living room below can be accessed from the hallway, so that the entire family can enjoy the spectacular view.

52 ICONICLIFE.COM

The basement contains an additional three bedrooms as well as some unique spaces including a sizable media room, a large gym with an adjacent wellness area and a billiards room with an intimate conversation nook and a window cellar and humidor.

The house’s palette is composed of soft natural tones of warm travertine and bleached walnut, with brass and bronze accents. The large scale of the home is balanced by the choice of materials and attention to detail, as well as the surrounding tropical landscape, and views from every room.

“I have always enjoyed working with different people and am constantly amazed by the different and varied backgrounds of our clients,” McClean says. “Design is more than a job for me. It is what I wanted to do as a little boy and which I am lucky enough to be able to practice today and hopefully for a very long time.”

McClean is a member of the American Institute of Architects. His firm’s first book, McClean Design: Creating the Contemporary House, was released in the spring of 2019. Written by Philip Jodidio and published by Rizzoli Electa, the book takes readers behind the scenes of 21 of McClean’s ultra-modern homes.

Sushi

In the heart of Orange County, nestled among charming boutiques and just a few steps from the Pacific Coast Highway, you will find Rebel Omakase, added to the Michelin Guide in its first year of opening, a restaurant renowned for its exquisite sushi and perfect for those who appreciate the delicate art of Japanese cuisine.

As the name suggests, the restaurant is centered around the art of omakase, a Japanese word used when ordering meals that simply means, “I’ll leave it up to you,” letting the chef choose the culinary experience from start to finish. Omakase offers a culinary adventure for those seeking to experience the true essence of Japanese cuisine. It requires a willingness to trust the chef and an appreciation for the artistry and craftsmanship that goes into each dish. If you have the opportunity to try omakase, be sure to come with an open mind and an empty stomach, as it is truly a feast for the senses.

Sushi is the cornerstone of Japanese cuisine, and while most may think “sushi” is just raw fish, the word actually refers to the vinegar,

salt and sugar-seasoned rice. Initially, the concept of sushi was from China, which may come as a surprise to most. Sushi originated as a method of food preservation, where salted fish was mixed with cooked rice and left to ferment to preserve the fish. The concept spread to Japan around the 9th century, and by the 15th century, it had continued to evolve. Japanese cooks discovered that the fish didn’t have to be fully fermented to taste great, and thus, raw sushi was born.

Sushi has become a global phenomenon, with various adaptations and innovations to suit different cultures and tastes. From the traditional nigiri and maki rolls to modern fusion creations, the dish has come a long way from its humble origins as a simple method of preserving fish. Despite its many forms, the core principles of fresh ingredients, skilled preparation and attention to detail remain at the heart of this beloved cuisine.

And unlike in the 1950s when sushi was mostly served indoors, it is now widely available and can even be found in graband-go refrigerated sections of grocery stores. If you’re looking for sushi paired

Rebel Omakase’s minimalist aesthetic and exquisite dishes make it a standout sushi concept, offering a traditional omakase experience with elegant and savory selections.

with an extraordinary dining experience, Rebel Omakase has got you covered. At Rebel Omakase, sushi is treated with the respect it deserves as an art form, with owner and Chef Jordan Nakasone as its artist. Chef Jordan spent years honing his skills, including working under Kimiyasu Enya at the esteemed Sushi Enya in downtown L.A.’s Little Tokyo, as well as an apprenticeship in Japan.

The restaurant’s alternating menu allows Chef Jordan to dream up new items inspired by traditional sushi restaurants in Japan as well as his own childhood experience eating Japanese cuisine regularly. He never uses artificial ingredients in his dishes–everything served at Rebel Omakase is made fresh.

The fine-dining experience begins with plated traditional items like tempura, clear soup or chawanmushi. Next comes the sushi portion of the meal, but first, guests are given a strawberry sorbet infused with wasabi to cleanse their palates in preparation. Chef Jordan carefully prepares sushi for the guests, using only the finest ingredients—all of

the seafood and most of the vegetables are sourced from Japan. And for those guests with a sweet tooth, don’t you worry. For the finale, you will be treated to a delectable dessert that will surely satisfy your taste buds.

Along with their crafted courses, guests can also choose from a selection of beverages to pair with their meals. Consider a sake such as the pure rice variety Tanaka 1780 X Chartier Blend 001 junmai or choose from other drinks such as beer, wine, Champagne and tea.

If you’re looking to indulge in this unique culinary experience, be sure to reserve your spot, as space is quite limited. Rebel Omakase offers two seatings per night, available only by reservation, ensuring an intimate and personalized experience for each guest seated at the 10-seat sushi bar. Set aside a few hours for an unforgettable dining experience that is sure to leave you craving more! Visit Rebel Omakase at 361 Forest Ave #103, Laguna Beach, CA 92651. MEMORIES Montage

This year, Montage celebrates two decades of luxury travel.

For 20 years, Montage Laguna Beach has welcomed discerning locals and tourists alike to the impressive, five-star resort. As a toast to two decades of oceanfront luxury, Montage is celebrating with a variety of yearlong celebrations, special offerings and a newly renovated meeting and event space, which was completed in January of this year.

When Alan Fuerstman, the founder, chairman and CEO of Montage International, set out to create a luxury hospitality experience 20 years ago, he knew Laguna Beach embodied the essence of what he sought to achieve.

“He knew that it was the perfect location to embody a true sense of spirit, of place,” Mary Rogers, area general manager and managing director of Montage Laguna Beach, says. “We have remained very true to our mission, though we have obviously evolved over the years.”

“I joined in 2021 and it’s been spectacular. I feel honored to lead the flagship hotel, and I certainly feel very honored to celebrate 20 years,” she adds.

In March 2019, the 260-room resort completed a full-revamp to the lobby, lobby lounge, guestroom designs and amenities, with an increased focus on sustainability. The

59 ICONICLIFE.COM

beachfront accommodations at Montage Laguna Beach include a 20,000-square-foot spa, a fine art collection, destination dining at The Loft, outdoor recreation including three pools, a beach and water sports; and more than 20,000-square-feet of indoor and outdoor meeting spaces.

“We look forward to continuing to improve our offerings and our services for upcoming renovations here in 2023. In the future we expect to do additional renovations and also the reopening of Studio restaurant, which is going to be a very new and exciting concept,” Rogers says.

What kept the guests coming back year-after-year? According to Rogers, it’s all about making the resort a comfortable environment.

“Our guests feel very special when they come here and they feel taken care of,” Rogers says.

“When our guests stay with us, they want to feel like this is their home away from home, and of course that would not be possible without our associates.”

“Our team here is incredible, every one of them. I really appreciate the associates that have been here since the very beginning,” she adds.

One of the special 20th-anniversary offers for guests is a $50,000 Legendary Laguna package, which includes five nights in the luxe Catalina Suite, $1,000 food and beverage credit, $1,500 Spa Montage credit, whale watching for two, a private guided tour of Laguna Beach art galleries and a 20th-anniversary gift collection. The anniversary gift collection features a bottle of Clase Azul Ultra and Montage XX Anniversary Tequila (1 of 300 produced), a Montage Laguna Beach custom brick building set and a Jonathan Simkhai Montage resort collection scarf, all housed in a Jimmy Choo limited-edition Laguna Beach tote.

“The Clase Azul Ultra bottle of tequila was created specially for the Montage’s 20th anniversary. It is not available for sale, so if

60 ICONICLIFE.COM

you are the collector this is a unique bottle for your collection,” Rogers says.

The custom Montage Laguna Beach brick building set allows guests to rebuild Montage Laguna Beach at home, brick by brick. All proceeds from the sale of the set benefit the Hearts of Montage program, which focuses on aiding Laguna Beach organizations that empower people in need.

For spa lovers, Montage unveiled a special anniversary treatment that evokes all five of the senses using virtual reality technology. The Five Senses treatment is exclusive to Spa Montage, and it is the first spa in the U.S. to use VR+ technology from Natura Bissé. Focus on your breathing, mindfulness and all of your other senses through the 150-minute treatment that begins with a singing bowl and a taste of honey. Next enjoy a foot cleanse, detox mask for hands and feet, full body massage, anti-aging facial and a dark chocolate treat to round out the sensory spa experience.

Keep your tastebuds happy with the return of the Taste of Talay, a summer culinary pop-up at Montage Laguna Beach. Chef Marc Narongchai, Food & Wine Mexico’s Best New Chef of 2020, will bring Talay’s authentic Thai street food and signature cocktails to the resort. The pop-up experience will be open to guests and locals from late June through early September, with reservations available beginning June 1.

Beyond the special offerings, luxury accommodations and exceptional views, Rogers says it is the service that Montage provides that makes it such a special place, for guests and locals alike.

“It really is our service that makes us stand out and keeps guests coming back time and time again, year after year,” Rogers says. “It is now a tradition for many of our guests to return here. They come here for the holiday cookie decorating, Christmas or to have drinks in the lobby lounge. Our guests have created very special memories here and they keep coming back to create those memories.”

LIVING Lido

Creating the ultimate beach chic vacation getaway home

After 18 years in the desert, an Arizona couple needed some water therapy. After searching for their perfect beachside escape for more than two years, they finally found it on the tiny Lido Isle hamlet in the harbor of Newport Beach.

The homeowners immediately contacted Erik Peterson, owner of PHX Architecture, who helped them design their Arizona home 18 years prior. The initial idea was to simply refresh the waterfront home, but when the wife, a designer, and Peterson started brainstorming, the plan morphed from the design version of Botox to a full-on facelift.

“We pivoted from a small project to take it to the studs and start over renovation,” Peterson says. “Throughout, her husband kept looking at me saying this was a ‘small project, how did you let it get out of hand,’ but once it all came together, he admitted it was stunning.”

DESIGN INSPIRATION

With an enviable location right on the water with an attached boat slip, the property met the number one real estate rule—location, location, location. However, the stuck-in-the-1980s Tuscan villa façade did not complement the stellar location. So, the first step of the transformation was to find a new look for the 3,600-square-foot home.

“The homeowners knew they wanted the feel of a Hamptons home, with a touch more modernity,” Peterson says. “We pulled imagery from Pinterest and other online sites to help us get our palette going and then we created our own look.”

That look focused on using white with black trim, pops of blue, beadboard and a liberal use of glass throughout the house.

FAÇADE FACELIFT

The renovation plans called for keeping the same footprint and maintaining the three-bedroom, three-and-a-half bath configuration. But everything else was on the table.

The most dramatic change was taking the façade from Italian countryside to New York beach chic. The house morphed from tan stucco with a red tile roof to one with clean lines, white brick with black trim and a black roof.

The addition of more windows and light was also another major change to the home.

“It’s always silly to me when you have great views and not open up the house as much as possible,” Peterson says. “The trick for this house was balancing privacy and light on the sides since the homes are so tightly packed. We used fluted glass to redirect light in, without the ability to see in.”

A signature for PHX Architecture is the use of natural light. To fully take advantage of the water views, Peterson added floor-to-ceiling windows on everything that backed to the water.

“On a long, thin lot, you have to figure out how to bring light in,” he says. “To give the clients the edge-to-edge glass at the back of the house and the more open floor plan they desired required lots of steel to reframe the space.”

To add light to the interior portions of the home, skylights were incorporated throughout.

64 ICONICLIFE.COM
65 ICONICLIFE.COM
66 ICONICLIFE.COM

INTERIOR VIBES

Inside the home, one of the biggest projects was opening the floorplan from a 1980s home with delineated spaces, to a modern, open floor plan.

“The biggest structural change on the main level was removing a big wall between the kitchen and main living space,” Peterson explains. “It was a game changer for the house. Now when you walk in the front door everything is tied together in one big, open room with spaces defined by different ceiling treatments.”

The entrance was modified to create a stunning first impression of the house. It is now a two-story glass entrance with a black steel door that seamlessly blends with the exterior façade.

The focal point of the home is a sweeping staircase.

“We decided to make it a sculptural statement,” Peterson says. “It has a beautiful, gracious curve with a skylight at the top to let light in.”

The banister was crafted by an artist working from an inspirational image the client supplied. He also created a lens for the skylight with detailing that mimics the detailing on the railing.

SMALL TOUCHES

As any homeowner knows, it’s the small details and personalization that make a house a home.

A lot of the interior design of the Lido House centers around the homeowner’s art and sculpture collection. To help highlight the pieces, lighting was a key element in the home.

“We worked with a great lighting designer to redo the lighting in the entire home,” Peterson added. “We used frameless LCD lights throughout.”

To let the art shine and to carry on the Hampton house vibe, the house is decorated with a neutral palette and clean lines. The interior furnishings were a collaboration between the homeowner and Peterson.

“Our motto of home building is creating living architecture. These aren’t museums,” Peterson says. “To hear the homeowners talk about all the memories they’ve already made in the home is what makes it special. When I hear that, I know we did something pretty special.”

Laguna Beach

Greetings from Laguna Beach! You likely already know that the small coastal town is all about greetings—famous for the waving and smiling greeters who adorn the street corners along Pacific Coast Highway, bringing a smile to anyone passing by. To experience the joys of living like a local in Laguna Beach, I headed to the walkable city for a firsthand experience.

There’s a lot to love about life in Laguna Beach, from the small local businesses that entice customers with chic housewares and swimsuit cover-ups, to the waves of the ocean and the top-notch luxury dining.

THE RANCH AT LAGUNA BEACH

Hidden within a picturesque canyon and just a short walk or drive from the ocean, The Ranch at Laguna Beach is the best of both worlds. Whether you plan a staycation or just visit for the day, there’s a lot to explore on the 87-acre property.

My guest room at The Ranch had a cozy feeling that evoked images of a summer cottage, with an arched ceiling and no adjoining guests below or above me. Coastalthemed decor in the room provided a welcoming environment that left me feeling relaxed and at home. My spacious patio led right to the pool and hot tub, surrounded by picturesque Japanese plum trees with

70 ICONICLIFE.COM

plenty of blooming pink flowers. To get the most out of the relaxing setting, I headed to the onsite Sycamore Spa by Hudson, which offers customized facials, massages, body treatments and an infrared sauna.

For golf lovers, the 9-hole course offers stunning views of the lush walls of Aliso and Wood Canyons. The green offers the feeling of being surrounded by nature on all sides, providing a laid-back atmosphere while you attempt to hit a hole-in-one. With a focus on sustainability, the golf course is GEO Certified.

Furthering the commitment to sustainability, The Ranch at Laguna Beach is a member of Beyond Green, a global portfolio of hotels, resorts and lodges leading the way in sustainable tourism. To be a member, The Ranch is evaluated on 54 sustainability indicators to ensure the property is following a green mission. The many sustainability initiatives include a reclaimed water program that saves 20 million gallons of potable water each year, on-site composting and plastic-free room keys.

The property also boasts a bio-dynamic farm called Harvest Garden, overseen by Farmer Leo, which provides a large percentage of produce for Harvest, the property’s signature restaurant, used in seasonal menus.

HARVEST

Harvest has a welcoming feel with a cabin-like interior and large glass windows that emphasize the beauty of the surrounding canyons. I dined at Harvest, which is led by Executive Chef Kyle St. John, and recommend it to Laguna locals and visitors alike.

My waiter, Philip, brought warm bread to the table and my seasonal cocktail of choice—the toasted horchata—which contained Forbidden Rice Horchata, Xicaru Mezcal and Licor 45. For my appetizer, I enjoyed the menu-staple French onion soup, complete with toasted baguette slices and plenty of gruyere cheese.

For my entree, I went with the grass-fed beef and pork bolognese, with housemade fettuccine noodles, aged parmesan cheese, whipped mascarpone and basil, fresh from Harvest Garden. All of the elements combined into a tasty meal that left me satisfied and ready to explore all that Laguna Beach has to offer.

PEPPERTREE LANE

Most Laguna Beach locals know about this ICONIC Laguna Beach landmark—Peppertree Lane. Home to the ever-popular Gelato Paradiso, which almost always has a line of hungry customers, and La Rue du Chocolat, which serves handmade chocolates and truffles. I couldn’t leave Laguna without some gelato. I went with the amarena ciliegia flavor, which is a vanilla base blended with juicy dark cherries, straight from Italy.

BROADWAY BY AMAR SANTANA

Broadway by Amar Santana, located in the heart of Laguna Beach, is well known for its culinary excellence. I was joined by my friend, fellow ICONIC LIFE team member and Orange County local Dorothy Costello for dinner at Broadway, and we were not disappointed by the New York City-themed interiors and our seats at the coveted six-person Chef’s table, overlooking the activity in the kitchen.

I started with a Loucette cocktail, which offered bright, light and summer-inspired flavors with Sobieski Vodka, Carpano Bianco, grapefruit and lime juices, honey and rosemary mint. Costello and I shared the irresistible housemade focaccia bread, Japanese hamachi sashimi and the grilled charred Spanish octopus before digging into our main courses. I was impressed with the freshness of the seafood and the effort and care that went into making each dish spectacular.

For the second entrée, I chose the herb-roasted mediterranean branzino, a popular dish at Broadway, which came finished with cauliflower purée, pickled clamshell mushrooms and truffle jus. The flavors were to die for. Costello went with the equally-delish lamb tagliatelle, a pasta dish with slow-braised lamb ragout, mint pesto, fresh horseradish and shaved parmesan.

For dessert, we indulged in a house-made hazelnut ice cream accompanied by decadent chocolate and gold-encrusted hazelnuts. Each dish was Top Chef-worthy.

LOST PIER CAFE

Locals and visitors agree that nothing beats the joys of walking along the beach, taking in the sounds of the waves, the smell of the salt air and the glimpses of dolphins jumping through the water. You can order a morning latte from Lost Pier Café, which is conveniently located right on Aliso Beach. With a latte in hand, I strolled along the sand and reflected on the joy that is “living la vida Laguna.”

DEL

CORONA MARvelous

Adhering to Leonardo Da Vinci’s principle that “simplicity is the ultimate sophistication,” Aria Design crafts a Corona Del Mar classic.

When designing a home, Arianna Noppenberger and her team at Laguna Beach-based Aria Design subscribe to Leonardo Da Vinci’s conviction that “simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” Arianna’s recent design of a stunning and timelessly elegant residence in Corona Del Mar well-illustrates her adherence to the edict.

“The homes I design are known for their restrained simplicity and sophistication but at the same time they are the essence of easy living—warm, tactile and timeless,” Arianna says. “It’s about the connection of indoor and outdoor spaces taking advantage of the benign climate, sunlight and coastal view. The emphasis is on facilitating year-round outdoor living.”

75 ICONICLIFE.COM

The 3600-square-foot new construction, single-level home was designed for (and with) the homeowner for optimal entertaining and to comfortably accommodate visiting friends and family. Arianna, Italian born and raised, moved to Laguna Beach in 1992 and founded her firm in 2002. She achieved this client-requested goal by visually connecting the interior space to the outdoors.

The great room’s open floor plan contains no boundaries between dining, kitchen, interior courtyard and the backyard. Two extensive glass walls slide to fully open and connect this room to the outdoors. The stone hearth turns vertically to form a display niche.

The brushed and unfilled titanium travertine that clads the fireplace wall extends to the outdoors. A cedar wood ceiling travels from the inside past the clearstory windows on the cantilevered roof eaves. The stone floor material is also used throughout and unifies the interior and exterior spaces.

The large sitting arrangement invites informal gathering; guests can sit on sectionals, large ottomans, the back of the sofa, or comfortable arm chairs. And the entire color palette is kept to a minimum, with just a splash of blue on the canvas above the dining area.

76 ICONICLIFE.COM
77 ICONICLIFE.COM

Noppenberger, a graduate of Milan’s Instituto Europeo di Design (IED), is more than an interior specialist; she is a spatial designer, analyzing room size and flow, and reconfiguring space by moving or removing internal walls and openings, if needed.

She and her team at Aria Design (which has defined itself through a series of high profile commercial and residential projects along the Southern California coastline) are intricately involved in the design process, working closely with both the architect and the contractor to make sure that specified details are executed with proper workmanship.

“We like to get involved early on in the design process, working with the architect to reshape the interior space based on our client’s needs,” Arianna says. “We believe that the foundation of a great interior space starts with a well-designed footprint that provides a well-defined circulation pattern as well as seamless transitions between each space.

Once we come up with a great layout, the next step is to design all the interior architectural elements like fireplaces, staircases, skylights, custom millwork etc. We often design the built-in lighting to enhance our work. We select all the materials and specify furniture and

78 ICONICLIFE.COM

fixtures to accentuate the design. Many times we like to use unique and innovative elements and/or materials to elevate our design.”

At ths home, that particularly unique material is found in the powder room, where a large skylight stretches wall to wall, grazing the large carved stone slabs with natural light.

Arianna often returns to Italy to find inspiration and sometimes brings her clients along to expose them to unique products and design. During the design of her high-end custom homes, she personally guides her clients, carefully listening to their needs and dreams, supporting them through the challenging decision process and ultimately delivering a home often above their expectations.

She believes her knowledge and experience inspires trust, and her clients often leave all of the final decisions up to her. She considers herself successful when a client comes back to her excited to start a new project.

ALL ABOUT KARL

The highly-regarded German-born designer didn’t set out for this career path; his plan at 21-years-old was to be an illustrator. In 1954, he entered his sketch of a coat that won first place and got him the 1954 International Woolmark Prize. From there, doors opened and sprung his career into the immense success that it is now.

More than 65 years later, he is known for his ICONIC dark sunglasses, flawless hair and dark suits, and for running the design behind the equally-as-ICONIC Coco Chanel. He is also recognized for his multifaceted talents, creating famous photography campaigns starting in 1987, interior and architectural designs in places like Paris, Macau, Miami and Berlin, and collaborating with the world’s most recognizable brands like Coca-Cola, Barbie, Stieff and H&M.

Even with all the versatility, Lagerfeld still defined modern fashion more than just about anyone.

Some of his most memorable designs:

The Double C Interlocking Logo For Chanel: The famously, easily identifiable logo on Chanel with the two c’s intertwined? That was Lagerfeld’s design.

and chiffons? It first made its debut from Chanel in the 1920s, and Lagerfeld revamped it with the famous designs you often saw in the movies.

The Multi-Layered Chanel Pearl Necklace Featured in “The Devil Wears Prada”: Anne Hathway’s character Andrea or “Andy” in the movie “The Devil Wears Prada” dons a Lagerfelddesigned necklace, a multi-layered pearl necklace with the Chanel logo added–also Lagerfeld’s design.

Nature-Themed Recyclable Couture Collection: In his later years, Lagerfeld started incorporating more and more environmentally conscious materials and processes. One of the more memorable ones was a Chanel Couture collection in 2016 that included flowing gowns decorated with wood shavings and nature prints. The materials were recyclable and biodegradable in line with his Karl Cares initiative to explore innovative efforts to become sustainable.

We can go on forever about Lagerfeld’s designs, like his giant hula hoop Chanel bag, the Fendi baguette handbag raved about by Carrie herself in “Sex and the City” and so much more. Lagerfeld passed away in February 2019 after his battle with pancreatic cancer, but his legacy lives on, and that’s why we’re more than excited to see Lagerfeld’s work as the theme of the Met Gala 2023 and Institute Exhibition.

The Costume Institute is going for a “line of beauty” with this Met Gala theme, particularly a “straight line,” a “serpentine line” and a “satirical line” that are a nod to Lagerfeld’s tendencies to represent modernism, history and playful, whimsical expressions in his designs.

Approximately 150 garments will be on view, spanning the designer’s career as the creative director of Chloé, Fendi, Chanel, and his eponymous label, Lagerfeld, as well as his time at Balmain and Patou.

“The exhibition will explore Lagerfeld’s complex working methodology, tracing the evolution of his fashions from the two dimensional to the three dimensional,” says Andrew Bolton, Wendy Yu curator in charge for the Costume Institute. “The fluid lines of his sketches found expression in recurring aesthetic themes in his fashions, uniting his designs for Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, Chanel, and his eponymous label, Karl Lagerfeld, creating a diverse and prolific body of work unparalleled in the history of fashion.”

In the exhibition running from May 5 through July 16, 2023—with the Met Gala kicking off a preview show on May 1—you’ll see a focus on Lagerfeld’s stylistic aesthetic themes from the 1950s to his final collection in 2019.

Journey to INDIA

118 ICONICLIFE.COM
Continue discovering a world that glows in brilliant technicolor in this second of two stories about this special country.
119 ICONICLIFE.COM

Discovering India is a study of contrasts. As noted by the brilliant Cambridge University economist, Joan Robinson, “Whatever you can say about India, the opposite is also true.”

Let us plan your first trip to India focusing on several of her best, ICONIC destinations and properties. Everywhere you go, you will see and experience India’s fascinating world of opposites.

7. SIX SENSES FORT BARWARA

As India is a study in contrasts, I recommend a visit to India that reflects a broad range of experiences, including those from dense cities to serene oases. About a three-hour drive from Jaipur is a newly curated oasis, Six Senses Fort Barwara. The hotel/resort is the beautifully restored Fort Barara overlooking the Barwara River. It is the first Indian property of the acclaimed Six Senses group. The Barwara Fort was constructed originally in the 14th century. The hotel incorporates two original palaces (East Wing and West Wing) and two temples, all within the walled fort. East Wing suites overlook the Aravali range, while the West Wing suites overlook the Barwara village.

Guests enjoy the three restaurants and various activities offered, in addition to the famed Six Senses Spa. Sunrise and sunset hikes and meditation are favorite ways to experience the natural and mystical beauty here. Their cooking classes are fun and provide organic farm-to-table food as well as the sharing of history, traditions, and happiness while also learning techniques and tricks for making an Indian meal. A historical walk in and around this 14th-century majestic fort reinforces the benefits of restoration and preservation of the self and everything around us. Experience a perfect wilderness picnic surrounded by nature and deep forest vibes. In the evening, enjoy cocktails or mocktails while watching the sunset. I trust you are ready to go!

8. RANTHAMBORE NATIONAL PARK

Further connect with nature with a 45-minute drive to your next destination, Ranthambore National Park, a vast wildlife reserve with tigers. This is one of the best locations in India to see these majestic predators in their natural habitat. Often, tigers can be spotted even during the daytime, busy hunting and taking care of their young. Ranthambore is also a famous heritage site because of the picturesque ruins that dot the park. Tucked between the rugged Aravalli and Vindhya hills, the park boasts a spectacular landscape filled with border-strewn highland plateaus, lakes and rivers.

Until 1970, it was a hunting ground for the local maharajas and is now a protected refuge for hundreds of species of birds, mammals and reptiles. Ranthambore is one of India’s finest examples of dry deciduous forests interspersed with grassland. Among the scattered ruins of the Ranthambore Fort, you may even spot tigers. Your private park tours are arranged with an experienced naturalist in open 4x4 Jeeps. A visit to Ranthambore National Park is a treat for wildlife and nature lovers—and there are exceptional hotel/lodge options nearby.

From Ranthambore’s pristine nature to one of the most magnificent man-made structures, travel to Agra and visit the Taj Mahal. En route, the contrasts of India continue.

KEOLADEO NATIONAL PARK

Keoladeo National Park, formerly known as Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, is one of the finest bird sanctuaries in the world. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The park is home to more than 370 species of birds and animals. It was also the breeding ground for the rare and elusive Siberian crane. Keoladeo National Park offers well-defined treks which can be covered on foot or by cycle or rickshaw. In fact, the park management has trained the rickshaw pullers in bird watching and they make for extremely knowledgeable guides. The best times to visit are from October to February to see migratory birds and from August to November to witness the resident birds. Visitors may also see sambar deer, chital deer, nilgai antelope and Indian boar.

FATEHPUR SIKRI

Next, stop to visit the ruins of the city of Fatehpur Sikri, a UNESCO World Heritage site that is about 22 miles from the Taj Mahal. The city was completed in 1585 by Mughal Emperor, Akbar, as his capital but a shortage of water compelled him to abandon the city. This is one of the best examples of Mughal architectural splendor at its height. Its architecture, a blend of Hindu and Islamic styles, reflects

Akbar’s secular vision. In fact, Fatehpur Sikri Mosque is said to be a copy of the mosque in Mecca and its designs, derived from Persian and Hindu architecture.

AGRA

Agra is the home of the Taj Mahal. The city flourished under the patronage of the emperors Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan and attracted artisans from Persia and central Asia. The place to stay is the Oberoi Amarvillas, built in a style inspired by Moorish and Mughal architecture. The hotel is located 2,000 feet from the Taj Mahal and all rooms, suites, lobby and bar offer breathtaking views of the ICONIC site. The Taj Mahal never disappoints, and I recommend visiting at both sunset and sunrise to view it bathed in different light. Security is tight at the Taj entrance so take nothing with you except your wallet and camera.

The Taj Mahal is a huge mausoleum complex commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan to house the remains of his beloved wife. Although it was a memorial, it was also a symbol of power, wealth and aesthetic values of the Mughal Empire. Constructed over a 20 years on the southern bank of the Yamuna River in Agra, the famed complex is one of the most outstanding examples of Mughal architecture, which combined Indian, Persian and Islamic influences.

At its center is the Taj Mahal itself, built of shimmering white marble that seems to change color depending on the daylight. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983, it remains one of the world’s most celebrated structures and a stunning symbol of India’s rich history. It is a masterpiece of architectural style in conception, treatment and execution. It has unique aesthetic qualities in balance, symmetry and harmonious blending of various elements. The color combination of lush greenscape, reddish pathways and blue sky showcases the monument in ever-changing tints and moods. Only when you are up close can you appreciate the exceptional relief work in marble with meticulous inlays of precious and semi-precious stones, including jade, crystal, lapis lazuli, amethyst and turquoise. It is stunning.

There is more to Agra than the Taj. Near the gardens of the Taj Mahal stands the important 16th-century Mughal monument known as the Red Fort or the Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This powerful fortress of red sandstone encompasses the imperial city of the Mughal rulers. It comprises many fairy-tale palaces, such as the Jahangir Palace and the Khas Mahal, built by Shah Jahan; audience halls, such as the Diwan-i-Khas; and two very beautiful mosques. For shopping, Agra remains famous for handicraft products; such as inlay work on marble, carpets, jewelry and embroidery.

10. VARANASI

Do not miss Varanasi, a highlight of a visit to India. Varanasi is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world and the holiest in Hinduism. To travel between Varanasi and Agra, there are excellent highway and train options between Agra and Delhi. There also are non-stop flights between Delhi and Varanasi throughout the day.

Varanasi’s unique culture is associated with the river Ganges, where life and death intermingle. For religious Hindus, a pilgrimage to Varanasi is a goal in life. Devout Hindus flock to the ghats (steps leading to the river) of the Ganges, praying with the belief that bathing in the waters of the sacred river will result in the remission of their sins while the ashes of the dead are scattered in the water to break the cycle of reincarnation. Start exploring with a tour along the ghats. Pilgrims and holy men abound. Every site, sound and person is rich and complex.

Each evening as dusk descends, the Ganga Aarti is performed at the three holy cities of Haridwar, Rishikesh and Varanasi. It is a very powerful, peaceful, joyous and uplifting spiritual ritual. In the evening, visit by boat and be among the faithful experiencing the Ganga Aarti ceremony performed at the Dashashwamedh Ghat, one of the holiest of all ghats in Varanasi. The beautiful, mesmerizing

THE GIFT OF GIVING

The American Indian Foundation (AIF) is committed to improving the lives of India’s underprivileged, with a special focus on women, children and youth. In a country where extreme contrasts of wealth and poverty coexist in everyday life, we hear hopeful stories of India’s rise and rapid growth. However, 800 million people—more than the entire population of Africa—live on less than two dollars per day. AFI has created countless opportunities for India’s poor to live successful, productive lives while creating impactful shift at an unprecedented scale, changing the lives of more than 8.4 million of India’s less fortunate.

The American India Foundation is committed to catalyzing social and economic change in India and building a lasting bridge between the U.S. and India through high-impact interventions in education, livelihoods, public health and leadership development.

and highly choreographed ceremony is performed to show gratitude and respect to the river and ask for its blessings.

Here, the Aarti is performed on a stage by a group of young pandits (priests), all draped in saffron-colored robes. It commences with the blowing of a conch shell and continues with the waving of incense sticks in elaborate patterns and the circling of large flaming lamps that create a bright hue against the darkened sky. The movement of the lamps held in the pandits’ hands is tightly synchronized to the rhythmic chants of hymns and the clang of cymbals. The heady scent of sandalwood thickly permeates the air, and you will be surrounded by all who have come. Thousands of tiny candlelit lamps made of leaves and marigolds are set afloat, paying tribute to the river. It is truly inspirational.

At dawn, return to the river by boat when the river is bathed in a luminous yellow light as colorful throngs of pilgrims perform their morning devotions and observe the cremations. Every day at Manikarnika Ghat, the largest and most auspicious cremation ghat, approximately 100 bodies are separately cremated on fresh pine pyres along the river’s edge. The ghat operates around the clock, every day of the year. It is believed that if one is cremated in Varanasi and the ashes are released into the sacred and purifying water of the Ganges, their reincarnation cycle will end, and they will reach Nirvana.

About 6 miles away, visit Sarnath, where Gautam Buddha gave his first sermon about the basic principles of his philosophy, which later became Buddhism. The site houses a number of Stupas (monuments), excavated ruins of monasteries and the Ashoka pillar with the four-sided lion’s head, which is also the national emblem of India. The museum has a rich collection of sculptures comprising numerous Buddha and Bodhisattva images, considered amongst the best specimens of Buddhist art.

11. ANANDA IN THE HIMALAYAS AND RISHIKESH

Next, take a non-stop flight to Dehradun in the Himalayas and you will be met and driven about an hour to Ananda in the Himalayas (Ananda). Anada is a destination spa resort designed with classic elegance in the colonial hill architectural style and blends seamlessly with the lush surrounding landscapes. Ananda is located on a 100-acre Maharaja’s Palace Estate, surrounded by graceful Sal forests and overlooking the spiritual town of Rishikesh and the Ganges River Valley.

Ananda, one of the finest spa resorts in the world, integrates traditional ayurveda, yoga and Vedanta teachings with international wellness experiences, fitness and healthy organic cuisine to restore balance, harmonize energy and create a sustainable journey towards a healthier, enriched lifestyle. Many guests love to explore and hike in this beautiful part of the Himalayas, including hiking on a 1,000+ year-old trail along the Ganges River.

Just 13 miles away is the city of Rishikesh, which is a fantastic benefit of staying at Ananda. Rishikesh offers plenty of options. Outdoor activities include kayaking on the bays and top-quality white rafting with a mix of easy to difficult rapids on the Ganges River.

Rishikesh is home to numerous yoga centers, meditation centers and the Kailas Ashram Brahma Vidyapeetham, which is a 130-yearsold institution dedicated to promoting and preserving Vedantic studies. Moreover, Rishikesh is a Hindu pilgrimage destination of

the holy Ganges River. Sites include the ancient temples of Bharat, Shatrughna and Lakshman.

I highly recommend being there during sunset to experience the inspirational Ganga Aarti ceremony of Rishikesh. It is a much more intimate, relaxed and less theatrical experience than the Aartis at Haridwar and Varanasi, so some prefer it for these reasons and, therefore, find it to be more spiritual.

12. DELHI

There are several non-stop flights from Dehradun to Delhi, which are a convenient gateway city for flights to India and to fly home.

Although Delhi is chaotic with terrible air pollution, it is interesting, vibrant and worth exploring. Delhi is an important commercial, transport and cultural hub, as well as the political center of India. Great tourist sites include Humayun’s Tomb, the Lotus Temple, the Lodhi Gardens, the National Museum of New Delhi and the Presidential Palace, as well as lots of shopping opportunities, including Connaught Place Market and Khan Market.

For me, a highlight and empowering culmination of a visit to India and Delhi includes visiting the communal kitchen of the Gurudwara Bangla Sahib in Delhi that feeds 35,000 free meals each day, 24/7. During the height of the Covid pandemic, it distributed 75,000 meals per day to the needy and Covid-affected. This is one of the most prominent and beautiful Sikh gurdwaras, a place of assembly and worship for Sikhs.

At a Sikh gurdwara, visitors of any background can find shelter, comfort and food through the institution of langar, the free community kitchen open to all. Everyone sits on the floor as a sign of equality. The communal kitchen cooks simple, fresh, wholesome,

vegetarian meals without any fuss or rush. It is run by volunteers. Its efficiency is a study in organization and how to feed so many so well with a focus on feeding the very poor.

The Sikh tradition, known in the Punjabi language as Sikhi, was founded more than 500 years ago in India. There are more than 25 million Sikhs around the world, which makes Sikhism the world’s fifth-largest religion. Sikhi teaches a message based on the principles of love, divine oneness and social equality. Their religion rejects all social distinctions that produce inequities, including gender, race, religion and caste. All people are equally divine and deserve to be treated as such. Safe travels home and Namaste!

As

Chef Dominique Crenn’s muse has always been her country of origin. The rugged coastline and blushhued sand of her native Brittany Coast has long been artistically and poetically represented within the creative dishes served at her ICONIC San Francisco restaurant, Atelier Crenn. But after nearly 25 years as a San Franciscan, the renowned chef is changing focus to honor the place she now considers home.

It was in San Francisco that Chef Crenn began her formal training as a chef. She moved from France in 1988 and began working under the tutelage of local luminaries Jeremiah Tower and Mark Franz for more than two years at the celebrated restaurant Stars. Chef Crenn then went on to make history as the first female executive chef in Jakarta, Indonesia, where she headed the kitchen at the InterContinental Hotel. After having spent a decade away from San Francisco, she returned in 2008 to head the kitchen at Luce, in San Francisco’s Intercontinental Hotel, earning her first Michelin star in 2009 and again in 2010.

Chef Dominique Crenn evolves, so too does her threeMichelin-star San Francisco restaurant.
129 ICONICLIFE.COM
130 ICONICLIFE.COM

Driven by a passion to create a deeply personal project, Chef Crenn opened Atelier Crenn in January 2011. An ode to “poetic culinaria” where she could express her heritage, Atelier Crenn achieved its first Michelin star within a year. The following year, she made history again when the restaurant received its second Michelin star, becoming the first female chef in the U.S. to receive this honor. In November 2018, she became the first female chef in the U.S. to receive three Michelin stars.

With artistry at the forefront, cuisine as craft and community always as inspiration, Atelier Crenn was and continues to be, a reflection of Chef Crenn’s life story. Memories of a happy childhood, one in which she was entranced by the intricacies and beauty of fine cuisine, define her artistic culinary style. The warm family life and strong sense of community that she enjoyed as a youth have defined her outlook and philosophy. And now, after 12 years of drawing inspiration from her childhood and individual journey, Chef Crenn has reimagined her world-renowned Atelier Crenn restaurant to keep pace with her continuing personal evolution.

New as of February 2023 in concept and design, the Atelier Crenn experience continues to be deeply personal to Chef Crenn. The new menu celebrates California’s rich bounty, highlighting local plants, fish and seafood. Yet the inspiration goes deeper than menu ingredients. Guests now embark on a journey that guides them through

131 ICONICLIFE.COM

different times and places, highlighting the beauty of California’s landscape both geographically and culturally.

“California’s multitude of cultures, flavors and ideas is what drew me here,” Chef Crenn says. “I am so proud to say that California is my home. Now I am working to tell the story of this beautiful place—the land, the sea and the people. There is so much beauty around us to be thankful for. This menu is an ode to the place that I consider home.”

Chef Crenn collaborated with Hollywood set designer Ethan Tobman on Atelier Crenn’s dining room remodel. The two became fast friends while working together on the set of Searchlight Pictures’

“The Menu;” Tobman, known for his production design in film, television and music, served as production designer on the movie and Chef Crenn served as chief technical consultant.

“This collaboration was written in the stars,” Tobman says, who has worked on music videos with celebrities such as Taylor Swift and Beyonce. “To be able to bring Chef Crenn’s beautiful vision to life is such an honor. She is an inspiration to me and so many others.”

“Ethan and I were quickly connected to each other,” Chef Crenn says. “Maybe it’s our creative minds that were drawn together, but he was really amazing to work with. From the moment we met, I knew I had to work with him again in another capacity.”

132 ICONICLIFE.COM
133 ICONICLIFE.COM
134 ICONICLIFE.COM

Tobman was inspired by Crenn’s complex personality—a mix of inspiring precision and accessible joie de vivre. His design is an extension of the brand she has created and is a more personal reflection of the life and community she has built in California. Elements include her love of nature and Japanese culture, subtle references to her childhood in France, and her potential origins in Morocco. Specifics include a 25-foot paper chandelier that evokes waves, a mural of trees, a mirrored column of Beaux-Arts design, a Kyoto rock wall in the restroom and geometric patterns that relate to the precision of the food.

Clean and exacting, yet playful and immersive, the design does not distract from the food, which continues to be the star of the show. Tobman and Crenn’s goal is that guests feel transported and that the experience is fun, inviting, intentional and unique.

“The design is organic modernism, giving the feeling of nature’s elements through industrial materials,” Tobman explains. “It is at once free and calming while precise and exploratory. You’ll always feel that it’s at its center while never feeling that there isn’t more to explore.”

“I want guests to see the beauty that is California, and I want to help tell the stories that are often untold,” Crenn says. “We are bringing that to life at Atelier.”

A Publisher’s FAVORITE DAY

Experience the thrill of driving the new Maserati Grecale.

136 ICONICLIFE.COM
137 ICONICLIFE.COM
138 ICONICLIFE.COM

At ICONIC LIFE magazine, we like to talk about our days shopping at the finest luxury centers in the world, staying at first-class places, dining in high style, and on this day, driving a luxe new Maserati. “Yes, we are working” are the words you can hear from our mouths. Often, I call these my favorite days.

On this day, I flew to Scottsdale in the morning via my private jet membership with Set Jet, which took a total of 90 minutes from my place in Orange County to the tarmac at Scottsdale Airport. The perfect easy-breezy start to the day for a commuting entrepreneur. From there, my team delivered me to the Maserati dealership, where I picked up my ride for the week, a stunning white Maserati Grecale with just seven miles on the odometer.

Maserati is a name synonymous with luxury, style and performance. And their latest offering, the Grecale, is no exception. As soon as you slip into the driver’s seat, you’re transported into a world of sophistication and exhilaration. The Grecale is more than just a car—it’s a driving experience like no other. I’ve always driven an SUV, so I was excited to put this one to the test.

The first thing that strikes you when you sit behind the wheel is the attention to detail. From the leather-wrapped steering wheel to the

sporty gauges, every element has been crafted with care. The infotainment system is intuitive and easy to use, offering access to all the features you need, including navigation, music and climate control.

As you push the start button, the engine comes to life with a satisfying growl. (I seriously love this sound!) The Grecale is powered by a turbocharged 2.9-liter V6 engine that produces 330 horsepower and 331 lb/ft of torque. It’s quick off the line and has a top speed of around 160 mph. I, of course, was cruising down Scottsdale Road, so I kept my speed well below that.

What really sets the Grecale apart is its handling. The car feels nimble and agile on the road, with a precise steering system that responds to even the slightest input. There are four driving modes— comfort, gt, sport and off-road. I chose sport for most of my driving, as I love how the car feels like it’s gripping the road.

Once I got a feel for the car, I was off to a photo shoot and another segment of Renee Dee-I-Y, shot at a luxurious home in Paradise Valley on the market through The MacDonald Team at Russ Lyon. Seriously, the car looked great outside this house. On the inside of the SUV, the Grecale is a symphony of premium materials and craftsmanship. The seats are upholstered in luxurious leather and the dashboard is finished with high-quality materials. As I drove off into

139 ICONICLIFE.COM

the sunset—literally—that night, the SUV’s interior LED lighting set a lovely mood for my drive to Zinc Bistro in Kierland Commons, impressing my friends as I arrived.

Driving the Grecale is a thrilling experience. The vehicle feels light and responsive, with a low center of gravity that inspires confidence. The suspension is well-tuned, providing a comfortable ride without sacrificing handling.

Of course, the Grecale is not just a performance machine. It’s also a luxurious vehicle, with features like heated and ventilated front seats, a premium sound system and a panoramic sunroof that add to the overall experience. There’s plenty of space for passengers and cargo, too, making the Grecale a practical choice for long road trips. For its size, the back seat is quite ample for guests, especially very tall adult children.

Speaking of children, the Grecale is equipped with the latest in safety technology, including a host of airbags, advanced traction control and a rearview camera. It also features a lane departure warning system and a blind spot monitoring system to help keep you and your passengers safe. The first quarter of the year is a busy time on the road in Scottsdale, and I sure didn’t mind the extra attention to safety.

The exterior of the Grecale is simply stunning, with its sleek lines and aggressive stance. The car sits on 20-inch wheels with 21-inch available as an option. The car’s signature grille is finished in chrome, and the body is available in a range of beautiful colors. The Grecale also features LED headlights and taillights that add to the car’s distinctive appearance. In addition, the Grecale features a sporttuned exhaust system that adds to the car’s performance and appeal.

One of the most notable features of the Grecale is its advanced infotainment system. You can stream music, access navigation and control the climate control system all from the touch screen. The system also features Apple CarPlay compatibility, making it easy to connect your smartphone and access your favorite apps—perfect for a busy publisher.

The Grecale offers a level of exclusivity that’s hard to match. Maserati is a brand that’s known for its premium vehicles and the Grecale is no exception. I was pleasantly surprised by the price, and I’ll let you learn more about that on your own. The new Maserati Grecale offers a unique blend of performance, luxury and style that sets it apart from the competition.

Whether you’re looking for an adrenaline-fueled driving experience or just a comfortable and stylish ride, the Grecale delivers what anyone could call a favorite day. And at the end of the week, I could call the Grecale one of my new fave SUVs. The smaller size added an ease and sportiness that I loved without sacrificing the uber-luxe style of Maserati, which I also love.

Get behind the wheel and experience the thrill of the open road for yourself.

Picture THIS

They say that pictures are worth a thousand words, but when it comes to Leica cameras, those words could write an entire book. To understand why these cameras are so unique, you have to take a look into the history of Leica to fully appreciate their impact on society.

When Oskar Barnack—an optician and photographer commissioned by Leica—developed the first 35mm Leica camera in 1914, he was well ahead of his time. This device featured an interchangeable lens that allowed photographers to take creative shots with ease—no small feat for that era! Before Oskar’s invention, taking pictures of such quality meant using a massive machine, but with one innovation, great cameras were portable and made for the people.

Once fully available to the public by 1925, the Leica camera was a game changer, not only for artists but journalists. It’s argued that

Leica is responsible for the rise of photojournalism itself, as some of the most famous photos come from Leica cameras, like the celebratory V-J Day Kiss in Times Square.

Throughout the years, Leica has continuously pushed the envelope with its designs and technologies, which is what makes it ICONIC. Leica cameras are fully customizable and features intuitive controls to help you get a great shot every time. In fact, you can say goodbye to blurry, out-of-focus or grainy photos, as Leica cameras boast 24.2 megapixels and an ISO sensitivity that allows users to capture beautiful images in low-light conditions.

Whether you’re a professional or photography enthusiast owning a Leica is something special. It’s not just about capturing memories but holding a piece of history as you create your work of art.
