2024 has been on my mind, and I’ve been counting the numbers in my head…2024 is 2+2+4=8. According to a few sources on the power of numerology, when you think of an eight-year, think of building, doing, and creating. It’s expansive. Think of unlocking your power and finding meaning in what you want to create in the new year.

For the team at ICONIC LIFE, we’ve been in expansion mode, adding team members and new issues for the year and perhaps something more. I feel the power of expansion for my clients, too, looking to create new opportunities for themselves—new communities, new locations and new ventures.

I’m feeling the feeling of expansiveness as well, looking at ways to view my role in a new way and help others grow. There’s something powerful going on, and I’m excited to be a part of it.

For this issue, we stretched our design wings to explore a new view of ICONIC architecture by digging into the roots of Mid-Century Modern architecture in many of the extraordinary homes we feature. We hit the road for Palm Springs, the mecca for ICONIC architects like Richard Neutra, Albert Frey, E. Stewart Williams and William Krisel.

This progressive view from long ago is a celebration of exciting design innovations and the foundations for much of what we love today.

With Palm Springs about midway between our two markets Scottsdale and Orange County, it’s the perfect place to tell the story of design that resonates with all of us just in time for Modernism Week in Palm Springs mid-February.

We’ll share some of our favorite new spots from the ICONIC Marrakesh neighborhood to the idyllic Palm Springs home where they filmed “Don’t Worry Darling.”

If you love the masters of architecture and ICONIC vintage design, make your way to Palm Springs for ten days in February for Modernism Week.

We love all things ICONIC, and in Palm Springs every February, Modernism Week allows the world to see a profound collection of well-preserved, Mid-Century Modern architecture and classic, vintage furniture pieces. For those who celebrate the modernism era, this is the ideal time to get your vintage vibe on.

Launched in 2006, Modernism Week is the largest celebration of Mid-Century and modern architecture, design and culture. It started in Palm Springs as a collaborative, grass-roots community effort consisting of a few home tours, cocktail mixers and educational events planned to coincide with the Palm Springs Modernism Show (originally called Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale) occurring in Palm Springs, California each February since 2000.

Attendees participate in tours, talks and compelling programs that educate people about the role that design plays in our daily lives. Palm Springs is known for having the largest and most well-preserved Mid-Century Modern architecture in the world. That’s what attracts people from around the world to understand the culture and lifestyle that surrounds it.

Bob Bogard, marketing support for Modernism Week through O’Bayley Communications, says last year’s 11-day festival had an estimated audience of more than 100,000 attendees who participated in more than 350 events. “We expect to surpass that number this year,” he says. The 19th annual Modernism Week 2024 is from February 15 to 25, 2024.

“Our festival in 2024 will feature tours of exciting and historic homes that will be showcased for the first time, talks by some of the top experts in their fields, intricately themed parties, and other opportunities for our guests to revive the MidCentury Modern lifestyle and culture. I am personally excited about the two featured homes we are offering this year - The Shag House and Wexler ’54,” says Bogard.

A Different KIND OF DATE NIGHT

Going out for dinner might be straight out of the standard date playbook, but with a reservation at Phoenix’s most scenic restaurant, Different Pointe of View, it’s easy to elevate your dinner date from mundane to marvelous.

Located at the Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort, this fine-dining eatery is the most consecutively awarded AAA Four Diamond restaurant in the Valley. Everything about Different Pointe of View is classic, from the white tablecloths and impeccable service to an ambiance that exudes

romance. For more than 40 years, the restaurant has been considered one of the most romantic dining spots in Phoenix. Executive Chef Alex Knezevic deftly combines long-standing favorites like lobster bisque and crème brulé with modern dishes with Asian, Mediterranean and French flairs.

Book ahead and request a table by the window to take advantage of the stellar view. Then, arrive early to enjoy a glass of bubbles and bask in the sunset glow on the terrace before dinner. On a recent visit to the mountaintop restaurant, my husband and I started the meal by sharing a chilled blue crab and avocado crab cake. The dish was paired with a glass of St. Francis Chardonnay, which brought out the sweetness of the crab.

For the main course, I stuck to the seafood theme with a pan-roasted Chilean sea bass partnered with earthy trumpet mushrooms and a fresh truffled spring pea purée. The expertly cooked fish melted in my mouth. My husband chose the grilled prime beef filet with duck fat, fingerling potatoes and asparagus. We finished the memorable meal with the classic crème brulé. It was a perfect sweet treat to share as I only like the burnt sugar topping, and he only likes the crème.

According to Chef, the restaurant sees more than 15 marriage proposals a week, so if you really want to make your romantic date even more special, we can’t think of a better place to pop the big question.

Luxury Lakeside

In Lake Havasu City, a new home marks a turning point in design.

Tricia and Scott Ward’s coolly contemporary and stylish home was designed by architect C.P. Drewett to be airy, light-filled and make the most of the surrounding dramatic views. With interiors by Mara Green, the house is a comfortable spot for the homeowners—principals of the building firm Mountain Desert Development—and their two teenage children. It is an easy-breezy place for entertaining.

However, the couple’s abode isn’t in the usual backyard of Scottsdale-based Drewett and Green. Instead, it is in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., perched above the deep blue reservoir on the Colorado River and surrounded by the high Mojave Desert. The design of the residence marks an inflection point for architecture in the lakeside community and reflects an elevation of style.

“Honestly, the only thing I knew about Lake Havasu is what I’d seen on MTV,” Drewett recalls with a laugh, referring to the lake’s annual spring break shenanigans immortalized on reality TV. “But when I got to the site, I was flabbergasted by not only the beauty of the lake but of the surrounding mountains and desert.”

The community’s roots go back to the 1930s, with the building of the Parker Dam downstream creating the lake. In the 1960s, entrepreneur Robert McCulloch began developing Lake Havasu City on the eastern—Arizona— side of the lake. He famously imported the old London Bridge from England and had it rebuilt over a channel as a marketing tool and tourist attraction. In the ensuing decades, the town became known as Arizona’s “Riviera.”

Lake Havasu is popular not only as a spring break destination but as a second-home community for Southern Californians and snowbirds from the upper Midwest and Canada, who come for sun, water sports, golf and desert recreation. For many years, standard production homes were the housing choices, but as more people have discovered the lake lifestyle, custom homes have come into the marketplace.

With an established building business in Park City, Utah, the Wards came to Lake Havasu in 2002 to work on a few homes in a new subdivision. “We had no intention of spending years here,” Scott remembers. “But a lot of houses later, we’re still here.”

Several years ago, a new marina on the lake opened, as did a new community called Havasu Riviera, located uphill, with spectacular views of the water. The Wards joined the

community to build luxury homes there and opted to craft their own on one of the available lots.

“This community is a turning point for Lake Havasu City,” Scott says. “The developer wanted a higher level of architecture here.” After interviewing several architects, the couple brought Drewett into the project. The architect not only designed their home but is working on more than two dozen others and helped craft the community’s design guidelines.

“My challenge in designing Tricia and Scott’s house was that I wanted the plan to have a good living experience and capture the views,” Drewett recalls. “However, the lots are rather narrow, and in Lake Havasu City, everyone has a lot of boats and ‘toys,’ so they need larger garages, which take up a lot of space.”

Drewett rose to the challenge by creating a 4,000-squarefoot plan that presents a blank face to the street, with an elevation taken up by a large—but architecturally handsome—garage, with the entry shifted to the side of the house. The builder and architect were able to put in a second story for the primary suite and office by excavating down a few feet to meet the community’s height restrictions. The home also includes the living, dining and kitchen on the first floor, along with two bedrooms and a den.

Thanks to pocketing and stacking window walls, the entire back of the main level opens onto a pool patio and unobstructed views of the surrounding desert and lake below. A dramatic feature is the cantilevered, angular overhang that shades most of the glass. “I’m a sailboat junkie,” Drewett remarks. “I love catamarans. Scott also likes to sail. This part of the house and its angles were inspired by French sailboat designs.”

Inside, interior designer Mara Green with MARA Interior Design —who has collaborated with Drewett on past projects—took her cues from the home’s pale plaster and limestone exterior and the beautiful setting to create an inviting contemporary environment for the homeowners. “The Wards are an active, vibrant couple,” Green explains. “I wanted the interior to be a livable reflection of them.”

“I told Mara that we wanted the interior to complement the architecture,” Tricia recalls. “But we also wanted the look to be warm and inviting, not cold and sterile. I wanted the furniture to feel like you’re getting wrapped up in a soft blanket.”

Working in neutral hues with a backdrop that includes pale porcelain tile flooring on the main level and white oak for the upstairs, Green went with an understated, elegant approach focused on the desert and lake views. She employed layers and asymmetrical lines to add interest to each room, suggesting simple furnishings with a bit of heft to match the scale of the setting, mixing in wood and metals for definition.

In the living room, a sofa, loveseat and two armchairs create a conversation area in front of the linear fireplace and television. At the same time, a dramatic chandelier illuminates the dining room’s live-edge walnut slab table. The kitchen’s rift-cut oak cabinetry adds warmth, and a veined quartzite-wrapped island accents the room.

The interior is further marked by several architectural details, including a cantilevered, glass-rail staircase that leads to the second level and a steel, glass and wood wine display cabinet of Green’s design, which separates the entry from the dining room. “The wine display is meant to be a signature entry piece without taking away from the views,” Green explains. “When it’s lit up at night, it glows.”

Now that they have settled into their new abode, the Wards are savoring its modern design and the Lake Havasu lifestyle. “We’re shopping for a new boat,” Scott says, eyeing the marina a short distance away. “Socializing here is tying up your boat at the water’s edge and meeting friends for drinks or dinner at restaurants along the lake. At our house, the sunsets are spectacular because we face west, and at night, we can see the lights of the London Bridge.”

Chef Cory Oppold strikes it big with COURSE, an intimate Scottsdale neighborhood restaurant focusing on prix-fixe plates.

It all started with that somewhat regular call to my foodie friend, Elizabeth Drewett. “I’m going to need your help. It’s fine dining time,” I said, and she responded, “We’ll do what we need to do.” And, of COURSE, we did.

COURSE is not a huge place; the signage doesn’t scream it’s there, but upon arrival, the muted-toned interiors with sophisticated finishes say everything. This was going to be an upscale, elegant evening, and this sixmonth-old restaurant will be the stage for an impressive culinary performance, where food is an art form.

Chef Cory Oppold’s name is newer on the chef scene, but he’s been in the kitchens of the greats: Binkley’s, Tarbell’s, Different Pointe of View, and Atlas Bistro. He won Food Network’s Chopped in 2019 when he first started imagining what would eventually become COURSE. A pandemic and virtual shut-down of the restaurant industry stalled his plans until he met investors and longtime fans Brett and Christian Pezzuto, who were fully on board with the idea.

Oppold was raised on a dairy farm and grew up in Pearl City, IL. He was exposed to wholesome, perhaps even plain, foods and had a strong Midwestern work ethic. Loving math and architecture, he moved to Phoenix

in 1998 to pursue a career in architecture. About a year later, he dined at Wright’s at the Biltmore and found himself “enthralled,” as he said, by the food. A proverbial light went off in his head, and his reading material went from Architectural Digest to Bon Appétit.

He enrolled in the Scottsdale Culinary Institute and graduated in 2001. He first worked with Ivan Flowers at Different Pointe of View, who had been trained by Michelinstar chef Alex Stratta, whom Oppold highly regarded. He moved to Sedona to become chef de cuisine at L’Auberge until about 2008, when he took a break to teach at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts.

“That’s where I refined what has become my style of food,” Oppold says.

From there, he learned the art of culinary precision from Kevin Binkley, who was his sous chef. His stint at Tarbell’s taught him how to handle larger volumes. As executive chef at Atlas Bistro, he earned a coveted five-star review that launched his name on the national scene. That’s when Food Network spotted him.

Today, at the helm of his own kitchen and culinary concept, Oppold focuses on high-end dining as he and his culinary team take you on a food exploration through an explosion

of both your taste and visual senses, using seasonal ingredients and a twist on classics and favorites deconstructed or reimagined.

COURSE offers five- or 10-course prix fixe menus and a brunch experience called Morning Would.

The dining experience that Elizabeth and I shared was exquisite, and I am no stranger to the best-tasting menus in the country. This one impressed me. Upon arrival, we were presented with a glass of bubbles before we could even settle into our seats, which let us know that the service tonight would be as exceptional as the food.

The menu changes regularly, and by the time you read this, many of these items will likely have transitioned to the next exciting concept. It was a Tuesday night, so I booked our reservation for the five-course tasting menu. Like kids excited for Christmas, looking at the 10 items on the menu of which we were to pick five…we upgraded to the 10-course, added the yummy wine pairings (booked our Ubers) and requested the truffles.

From there, we paced ourselves to bask in the deliciousness of food as theater. Elizabeth and her architect husband, C.P. Drewett, own Drewett Works, so the architectural nature of the plating and the ever-changing dish design was not lost on

her radar. This was by no means our first dining girls’ night out, but it was perhaps one of the two best.

Our first bite was Toro with caviar, followed by two clever dishes: a wagyu beef cheek pastrami on pumpernickel with horseradish and what Chef Cory calls pot pie, a deconstructed version. Of course, these bites were small but mighty. Then we enjoyed the lobster corn dog, which really showcased Chef Cory’s playful nature with food. The duck breast was perfectly prepared, and the venison with Brussels sprouts had just three Brussels leaves…so artful.

We finished with several sweet bites, including a pear tatin and mignardise, which are petit

fours in the flavors of pumpkin-spiced candy corn, candy apple and carrot macaroon.

As much as the food delighted our palettes, the wine pairings were on point. We could not stop remarking about how amazing the pairings were. We even enjoyed a wine that we agreed before the dinner we’d never drink, which was fantastic with the venison. Congratulations go as well to sommelier Nicholas Padua, who blew our minds.

Oppold brings to Scottsdale a fresh approach, a beautiful setting, a playfulness for creating culinary surprises and well-executed dishes that pack a wonderful punch.

Would we return? But of COURSE!

Imagine a landscape where every gust of wind carries the whispers of the Arizona terrain, and every ray of sunlight paints a new chapter in nature’s ever-evolving story. In this enchanting setting, SWABACK Architects + Planners, a collective of visionary creators, embarked on a mission to craft a home and a masterpiece—the McGuire residence.

Nestled on nearly three acres, this two-bedroom, twoand-a-half-bath home spans 5,528 square feet. Offering unobstructed views of the surrounding desert, the house ensures its residents are greeted with awe-inspiring vistas wherever possible.

DESIGNING DREAMS: THE A-TEAM

Led by John E. Sather, managing partner of SWABACK, the McGuire home was conceptualized as a vibrant expression of organic design. The A-team, a constellation of talents from Enchanted Garden Landscape, Janet Brooks Interior Design, and Schroeder Construction orchestrated a plan that embraces the Arizona landscape.

Sather shares insights into the philosophy behind the design. “The McGuire residence embodies a profound commitment to organic architecture, where the structure seems to organically emerge from the desert landscape, drawing inspiration from its natural colors, patterns and textures,” he remarks.

INSIDE MEETS OUT: INTERIOR AESTHETICS

Inside, warm rift-cut white oak doors and cabinets resonate with the hues of the desert, while blackened steel accents introduce a modern edge. Interior designer Janet Brooks carefully curated a gray and beige palette inspired by the owners’ artwork, creating a tranquil atmosphere that merges with the exterior environment fluently.

A unique feature in the open space plan is a “back kitchen,” a thoughtful and intentional space that elevates practicality and aesthetics. “The back kitchen serves as a functional hub, facilitating easy entertaining while maintaining the clean and uncluttered aesthetic of the home,” Sather explains.

The innovative layout, characterized by long lines and angles, creates an open, airy ambiance, promoting fluidity and continuity. This high-quality design elements extend beyond the kitchen, contributing to a cohesive and enjoyable living experience integrated with the desert environment.

Each piece of furniture and art shapes a meticulously designed and welcoming interior, from the cozy sectional that sits across the fireplace to bespoke artwork inspired by the natural world.

SUSTAINABILITY: A SYMPHONY OF GREEN DESIGN

Beyond beauty, the desert oasis is a beacon of sustainability. The design team embraced energy-efficient features, drought-resistant landscaping and sustainable building materials. Landscape architect Donna Winters ensured water efficiency with her designs while maintaining the appearance of an undisturbed desert landscape.

Sather emphasizes, “Sustainability considerations are woven into the very fabric of the McGuire residence’s design.”

The architect’s expertise resulted in a straightforward design, optimizing the desert location while mitigating environmental repercussions. The selection of materials, including desert-hued stucco and stacked stone, goes beyond enhancing visual allure; it serves practical functions by offering natural insulation and protection from the sun. MODERN MINIMAL

Situated in a natural dip atop Phoenix Mountains Preserve is a private, minimalist home that should be named Top of the World. With crystal-clear views of the mountains and the sparkling city lights below, it’s easy to fall in love with this 8,000-square-foot custom-designed residence.

The design-build team at The Construction Zone created this stunning structure. While this home may seem to appease the aesthetic of many, it is ultimately a reflection of the owners’ dreams. With customization at the forefront of the design, Andy Byrnes, founder of the firm, produced a home that fit every need and desire the owners had in mind.

“This home was very tailored to the client,” Byrnes says. “One of the owners had a very strong sense of what he wanted the palette to be. He had his flooring picked out for years, and he had the stone for the walls in mind before we started, so we really sourced based on the palette that he had in his mind. He had a very strong opinion about millwork and cabinetry finishes, so we worked very closely with him on the interior design aspect of the home. We really worked hard to make the architecture complement the way the owners live.”

When you drive up the steep mountainside road and arrive at the residence—a beautiful home of glass and steel—you can’t help but fall under the spell of the Phoenix city skyline, to which you have 360-degree access.

An outdoor breezeway with a grill and lounge area connects the main home to the secondary building that is currently an office and luxurious liquor bar.

ISM

As you enter the home, the high-ceilinged, glass-surrounded foyer entices you to walk up the handcrafted steel and glass staircase that emerges from a stone statement wall. You are immediately engulfed with panoramic views of the Valley through the floor-to-ceiling glass sliding windows that seamlessly blend the kitchen, living space and primary bedroom with the stone terrace that overlooks the southern part of Scottsdale and Phoenix.

The primary level of the home has an open floor plan, allowing all the rooms to flow together; if more privacy or sun protection is preferred, custom sliding frosted-glass doors or louvered metal panel doors can emerge from within the walls.

While this home may seem to appease the aesthetic of many, it is ultimately a reflection of the owners’ dreams.

With two private bathrooms and massive walk-in closets accompanying the primary bedroom, space is not an issue at this estate. The floating vanities crafted by AK Studio contribute to the home’s sleek aesthetic.

Every aspect of this house is elevated to epitomize luxury, from top-tier appliances like Sub-Zero, Bosch, and Gaggenau to elegant luxury millwork from Boffi and AK Studio. The estate has the latest smart home technology from Crestron. The wood floors are velvety to the feet, and the Neolith stone tiles reflect modern elegance.

The home is not only beautiful in its design but also in its attention to detail in the fit and finish of the construction. The Construction Zone manufactured the custom windows, millwork and steel, adhering to a virtually seamless process from design to installation.

One major challenge Byrnes and his team faced was transporting materials up the daunting mountain.

“The relationship of the spaces of the home to the view, I think, is what makes this home very special.“

“Access to the site was very difficult. I had a staff member who spent more than 1,200 hours driving a 4x4 up and down the hill transporting equipment and workmen,” Byrnes recalls. “Another major challenge was getting large materials around the bend of the mountain. We had to use a crane to move materials around that bend.”

Despite the challenge, The Construction Zone persevered and created a remarkable landmark that is a testament to modernity and luxury.

“The relationship of the spaces of the home to the view, I think, is what makes this home very special,” Byrnes says.

“Even though it is a very fancy home, I would say it is also modest. It’s not ostentatious. It’s an expensive house, don’t get me wrong, but there’s not a lot of excess, and that is something I really like about it.”

PAGE 98: Owned by Bob Bogard and Michael Von Wittenau, the Mod Vista home may look familiar; the property was featured in the psychological thriller, “Don’t Worry Darling” starring Florence Pugh and Harry Styles. The Canyon View Estates community reflects a utopian lifestyle with most units having the same floor plan as their neighbors. Designed by William Kirisel and built by Roy Fey in 1962, the 180-home-community serves as home to many residents both part-time and full-time.

PAGE 104-105: This home was designed by the renowned architect William Krisel. Krisel is a prominent architect famous for his sleek lines and Mid-Century Modern designs. Krisel’s work is celebrated throughout Palm Springs. Dubbed the Ray Bradbury home due to the famous author’s previous ownership of the house, you can find Bradbury’s novels displayed throughout the interior as well as nostalgic decor that reflects classic Palm Springs Mid-Century Modernism. The Ray Bradbury house has also been photographed by Julius Shulman, most known for his photography of the Case Study homes in the 60s.

PAGE 106: The famous Marrakesh community—the location of these images—is a staple in Palm Desert. Pink homes lining the streets with mountain backgrounds is truly ICONIC. Marrakesh started when club developer Johnny Dawson had a vision for an unexampled community. Inspired by the pink hues of the Moroccan sunset, Dawson gathered a team of expert architects to create the beautiful and esteemed community that Marrakesh is today. As the residents often say, “It’s hard to have a bad day in a pink house.”

The lure of retro themes and Mid-Century Modern architecture beckons those with a love for design. Meet three top designers who have made Palm Springs their home.

Palm Springs boasts the most significant collection of Mid-Century Modern homes and notable vintage neighborhoods. Some of the most famous architects have left their mark on the desert community, including William Cody, Richard Neutra and Albert Frey.

A playground for politicians, presidents and entertainers, Palm Springs became Hollywood in the desert, given its proximity to Los Angeles. Actors could escape to this nearby enclave for social events and still be within the two-hour rule of most studios when working.

Combine celebrity ties with design, and Palm Springs is a place full of stories and excitement. It’s no wonder designers and architects alike find this destination ripe for renovation. In this case, reimagining each property while staying true to the form and function is what makes this small city great and worthy of celebration each year during Modernism Week, which celebrates Mid-Century Modern design and the fashion and culture surrounding it.

Anne Michaelsen Yahn

Known for her deep understanding of defining the dynamic edge between classic and modern, Anne Michaelsen Yahn has transformed her ICONIC estate in the Marrakesh community into a contemporary oasis. With more than three decades of success, Michaelsen Yahn is an expert in her field. As a member of ASID and The Orange County Design Alliance, Michaelsen Yahn has garnered countless accolades and awards for design.

Woolf. Elgin’s specific vision and appreciation for beauty were the driving forces that created this ICONIC community.

Originally, Michaelsen Yahn had no interest in residing in Palm Springs until she was introduced to the rosy allure of the Marrakesh community. “A friend introduced me to the Marrakesh Country Club neighborhood. Immediately, I fell in love with the preserved Hollywood Regency architecture, the massive rooms, the grandeur of the views, and everything the neighborhood and community had to offer,” she says.

The Marrakesh community was the last project of renowned Hollywood Regency architect John Elgin

Michaelsen Yahn utilized her design knowledge to create a unique home without compromising its history. The name of the home Michaelsen Yahn designed is “La Maisonnette” which translates to little house and perfectly encapsulates the space she created—not grand in size but in elegance.

“I love my home! Being able to draw from the past, honor the legacy of the original architecture and bring it to modern conveniences was a dream come true,” Michaelsen Yahn remarks. “Paying homage to the home’s elegance, high ceilings and glamorous Hollywood lifestyle is what I’m always looking for. Opportunities like this - staying true to a home’s roots while modernizing- perfectly encapsulate my motto of ‘Contemporary Living, Classically Inspired.”

Barclay Butera

Celebrated interior designer and author of six books, Barclay Butera is a pioneer in the design community. His approach to elegant, glamorous and chic interiors has landed him partnerships with some of the industry’s most respected brands.

With Butera’s busy, on-the-go lifestyle, the tranquility and unique aesthetic of Palm Springs gives Butera a healthy balance of work and relaxation. Not only does Palm Springs offer a relaxing getaway, but the ties to original Hollywood superstars are one thing that resonates with Butera.

“I think the thing that draws me to Palm Springs the most is the history and ties to the golden age of Hollywood,” Butera says. “The legendary stories of Bob Hope, Dinah Shore, and, of course, Frank Sinatra are still very much alive. I try to frequent the celebrated restaurants that were the haunts of these notables from decades ago. The extraordinary thing about Palm Springs is that you can

find tranquility and relax or go out in the town; it is the best of both worlds. Plus, I have recently gotten into golf, and there’s nothing better than hitting the courses in sunny Palm Springs with friends and family.”

Butera’s beautiful Spanish home sits on a half-acre lot and projects brightness and light while maintaining the elegance and glamor often found in his work.

“Spanish architecture tends to be dark and moody. I wanted a bright, happy home and we achieved that.,” Butera explains. “I did add new flooring, comfortable new furnishings and gorgeous artwork. Outside, we added magnificent tile touches, and we also added fantastic new lighting inside and out! The home glows; it’s so welcoming and inviting. I love pulling in the driveway and enjoying my perfect little enclave in the heart of Palm Springs.”

Michael Berman

Michael Berman is a renowned interior, product and furniture designer, completing high-end projects from coast to coast. Berman’s work reflects his interest in history, art, architecture and nature.

“I’ve always been a somewhat eclectic interior designer,” Berman says. “I’ve loved different eras and styles such as the streamlined modernism from the 1930s, art deco furnishings from the 1940s, atomic age furnishings from the 1950s and Mid-Century Modern furnishings from the 1960s into the late 70s and early 80s. I love putting things together, and I think an interior that speaks to the owners’ personalities is always more interesting than a formulaic type of interior.”

With the aesthetic of Palm Springs similar to Berman’s style preferences, it’s no surprise that Berman gravitated to the desert city’s relaxing lifestyle and striking architecture. Palm Springs not only offered Berman a quick getaway from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding metropolitan cities but also inspired him for his work.

“I started coming out to the Desert area in the mid-80s; it was wonderful,” Berman explains. “There is a certain

amount of glamor and ease of living lifestyle associated with Palm Springs from the 1960s and early 70s that is alive. So we came out one weekend, bought a house and started living life. I’ve always been one to look back for inspiration, so anything vintage and retro was very inspiring to me, especially for my Interior Design Projects and my furniture company.”

Berman’s home in Palm Springs reflects his eclectic style and life experiences. Pieces symbolic of his and his life-partner, David Rubin’s journeys are showcased throughout the home.

“We are interested in mixing antiques with soft modern furnishings such as Asian, British Colonial and Danish pieces with simple silhouettes,” Berman says. “The juxtaposition of texture and sheen is always a gorgeous combination that pairs well with our eclectic mix of art, including African masks from our trip to Tanzania, bronze Buddha from our visit to India and our vintage and modern photography and paintings.”

Team Vail or Aspen? Whichever destination you fancy, here are the best-of-the-best recommendations for each vacation spot.

Think of the glamorous town of Aspen as the Yankees vs. the fun-loving Vail, the Red Sox, or the Rolling Stones (Aspen) vs. the sing-along Beatles (Vail); whichever side of the fence you may fall on, know that you will most likely be cherishing every moment in either locale.

This alpine sibling rivalry between the older Aspen (born 1946 when lift tickets cost $3.75) and the younger Vail (born 1962 with a $5 lift ticket) has been in effect since the two saw each other taking turns on the Rocky Mountain slopes. With annual visitors of 1.4 million in Aspen and 1.3 million in Vail, the demand for skiing in these locations is at an all-time high.

Concurrently, with annual skiing revenue in Colorado at $4.8 billion, there has never been such an enormous diamond-shaped snowflake floating in the air.

Fortunately, we are the beneficiaries of this debate. The dedication to offer the snow-devout best experiences possible is top of mind at both locations. Whether it’s powder day skiing, endless runways to display your best self to the well-booted set, or world-class cuisine (both towns have Michelin-star restaurants), these two arenas have you covered.

VAIL

In 1962, famed Colorado 10th Mountain Division veteran Pete Seibert had an idea. How do you create a world-class ski resort on the patch of Forest Service land now known as Vail? (The town was named after Charlie Vail, the highway engineer of I-70 in the 1940s.) Fast forward 61 years and Seibert’s dream-come-true is now considered “steezy” (effortlessly stylish).

This modern mix of style and ease is encapsulated in the quaint assortment of quality restaurants, whimsical galleries and designer boutiques in this mountain paradise. You can find your Warren Miller moments skiing the famed Back Bowls or get your turns on any of the 195 runs available.

Shopping Gorsuch

Gorsuch opened as a gas station in 1966. What started as a hub for fuel blossomed into the flagship store for fashionable ski apparel, gifts and ski rentals. The Gorsuch family has outfitted and decorated the Vail Valley for decades with its fashion and knickknacks. Mrs. Gorsuch still helms the store five days a week.

This shop sells upcycled vintage denim, needlepoint loafers and custom totes embroidered with “Noblesse Oblige” for the grocery run.

Sweet Basil

Sweet Basil is the newly recognized Michelin-star restaurant in Colorado and is the go-to for its delectable cuisine. The Miso Ramen bowl makes you forget your fatigue from the slopes and will get you feeling warm, relaxed and replenished.

It was the dream of silver that turned Aspen into a golden reality. In 1870, the first miners scoured the land in search of fortune, but little did they know that the real cache was above ground. So, in 1940, the ambitious trio of dreamers—Walter Paepcke, Friedl Pfeifer and Herbert Bayer—created Aspen, turning the mining town into an international destination for the global elite.

For skiing, Aspen Mountain is divided into the main mountain Ajax (accessible to all levels of skiers), Aspen Highlands (expert terrain) and Buttermilk (kiddo’s playground). For the powder-hungry, make the trek to Snowmass just down the road for an additional 94 bliss-filled runs.

Bosq is a newly minted Michelin-star restaurant. Chef Barclay Dodge never fails to impress with an evolving menu showcasing the valley’s quality ingredients with inventive takes (think Forest Broth).

After attempting a new land speed record while bombing down Ajax, there is no better place to watch other skiers than at Ajax Tavern at the base of Aspen Mountain. Important note: truffle fries are mandatory.

Puerto Rico is making its comeback and is ready for luxury travelers. Let’s learn about the island, plan a visit and support the economy.

Christopher Columbus reached the island in 1493, which brought more than 400 years of Spanish rule. Spain eventually granted Puerto Rico the right to self-government in 1897. Just months later, however, the U.S. invaded the island during the 1898 Spanish-American War. Spain lost the war and ceded Puerto Rico to the U.S.

The political status of Puerto Rico is that of an unincorporated territory of the U.S. and is officially known as the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

As a traveler, I love that the Puerto Rican people are so welcoming and infused with their own brand of pride, style and national identity. A trip to Puerto Rico is a grand, easy escape to a beautiful Caribbean island. It is a trendy destination for weddings and milestone birthday celebrations with friends and family. Notably, U.S. citizens do not need a passport to travel between the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

SAMPLE ITINERARY

A “Best of the Best” recommended itinerary:

1. 3-5 nights in San Juan at Condado Vanderbilt Hotel or Fairmont El San Juan Hotel

3. 3-5 nights in Río Grande at St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort

Most visitors fly into Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico (IATA code: SJU). Each hotel and destination listed works well as a stand-alone, quick visit to Puerto Rico. Each has beautiful accommodation options, including home and villa rentals. Travelers may choose to visit for a few nights or several weeks or months at a time. Charmed by all the beauty Puerto Rico offers, visitors often choose to return.

I am sharing several recommendations for a multi-destination journey to Puerto Rico spanning one to four weeks with a focus on luxury and adventure.

LIVE BORICUA

First, I recommend starting with “Live Boricua.” A Boricua is a person from Puerto Rico by birth or descent or a Puertorriqueño. Boricua has come to embody a vibrant spirit, flavor, pulse and rhythm that you will feel in Puerto Rico.

RICH WITH ACTIVITIES

Enjoy the sun, pools and beaches at or near your hotel. Puerto Rico (PR) has more than 300 beaches. Nearby restaurants, bars, cafes and clubs abound for every budget, style and lifestyle.

Exciting reasons to visit PR are the vast array of activity options: kayaking on a sparkling bioluminescent bay, enjoying a local rum tasting, hiking to see unique flora, fauna and waterfalls in the rainforest, experiencing diverse nightlife options, taking a helicopter tour, beach hopping around the coast, relaxing with a fresh cup of world-famous coffee at Hacienda Muñoz coffee plantation, tasting spectacular food, visiting historic lighthouses and viewing contemporary art in a museum that is its own architectural masterpiece, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico (MAC).

OLD SAN JUAN

Discover the wonderfully maintained, historic Old San Juan—a “must-see” UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its 74-block radius is rich with Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture from the 16th-19th centuries. Staying here for one to three nights at the lovely Hotel El Convento or Palacio Provincial is highly recommended so you can stroll and wander as you please. Alternatively, a quick visit aboard a cruise ship shore excursion is great, too.

EL YUNQUE NATIONAL FOREST

A highlight for me was a hiking exploration through the breathtaking El Yunque National Forest. This national gem is a perfect destination for those who want a total immersion into nature. It is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System and the largest public land in Puerto Rico, encompassing more than 28,000 acres. The highest mountain peak in the forest rises 3,494 feet above sea level.

Ample rainfall creates a jungle-like atmosphere. The forest is brimming with trails surrounded by rich flora and fauna. Bring a bathing suit to swim in the streams and waterfalls.

BIO BAYS: MOSQUITO BAY, LAGUNA GRANDE AND LA PARGUERA

Another highlight is a nighttime visit to one or more of the three bioluminescent bays (bio bays) in Puerto Rico. These bio bays are Mosquito Bay, Laguna Grande and La Parguera. They contain a very high concentration of bioluminescent dinoflagellate plankton. When these plankton are moved in the water, pressure is put on their cell walls, which causes a cellular chemical reaction that emits light (bioluminescence). A visit is magical for explorers of all ages.

The optimal time to check out the bio bays is when the moon is not bright in the night sky, exposing you to the world’s most luminous marine light show. To visit Puerto Rico’s bio bays, you must have a permit, and it is best to go with an expert guide.

Mosquito Bay, on the island of Vieques, is the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world. Swimming is not

allowed. A one or two-night stay on Vieques is recommended to enjoy visits to Mosquito Bay and nearby beautiful beaches. You can arrive in Vieques from San Juan Via, a small commuter plane from SJU, SIG in San Juan, or RVR in Ceiba.

La Parguera bio bay is located at the southwestern tip of Puerto Rico. It takes about 2.5 hours to drive between San Juan and La Parguera. This is the only bio bay in Puerto Rico that allows tourists to swim among the glowing plankton. The visibility of the bioluminescence is best viewed while swimming in the water with a mask.

Laguna Grande bio bay is in Fajardo, about an hour’s drive east of San Juan. Visitors may kayak through the mangroves and see the bioluminescence in the bio bay. Nearby, located between the lush foothills of El Yunque National Forest and the crystal waters of the Atlantic Ocean, is Carabalí Rainforest Adventure Park, an action-packed adventure destination with fun ATV and horseback experiences.

THE GIFT OF GIVING

Mentes Puertorriqueñas en Acción (MPA) is doing valuable community work to help enable and facilitate more accessible, inclusive and participatory workspaces for young people in Puerto Rico.

Their Program for the Empowerment and Retention of Change Agents (PARACa) is a social action internship program aimed at young university students and recent graduates recognized for their leadership and sense of responsibility towards Puerto Rico.

At PARACa, young people begin their careers through internships with a focus and hands-on high social impact. These internship centers help to foster a high level of social commitment. Interns are provided with real-life training and mentorship to help them achieve a lasting and supportive impact in their immediate communities, jobs and beyond.

DORADO BEACH, A RITZ-CARLTON RESERVE

Saving an exquisite destination for last, check in to the toprated resort, Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve. The property is a stunning world-class resort with a renowned five-acre spa sanctuary, fine cuisine, three pro golf courses and nature trails, all on a pristine beachfront.

In 1905, this land was first developed as a pineapple, grapefruit and coconut plantation. In 1958, the tycoon Laurance Rockefeller developed it as a RockResort hotel and nature preserve. Later, the property was transformed into Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, which opened in 2012. After severe damage from Hurricane Maria in September 2017, an extensive multi-million-dollar renovation took place a year later, and Dorado Beach reopened looking better than ever.

The entry-level rooms are big, starting at nearly 1,000 square feet. The villas and residences are even larger. All rooms, villas, residences and public spaces are designed thoughtfully with a focus on tranquility, natural light, natural materials, indoor/outdoor living and true barefoot beachfront and sea view luxury. A stay of at least four to eight nights is recommended. Before arriving here, explore the island of Puerto Rico because once you arrive at Dorado Beach, you will not want to leave.

From regulating sunlight to adding a vintage vibe, the possibilities are endless for these ICONIC blocks.

Breeze blocks (cinder blocks) have transcended time and place, evolving from their origins in the 1930s to become a modern decorative darling worldwide. Picture this: A breezy patio adorned with breeze blocks makes passersby do double takes, regulates sunlight and encourages airflow. It’s like nature’s air conditioning for your outdoor oasis.
