FALLING IN LOVE

Ilove fall. The kids are back at school, the temps are cooling down, and it feels like we’re all back at it after a lovely summer break. Still, the skies are blue, the sunshine is warm, and the best part of the year is ahead.

We were inspired by Lido Marina Village and its ICONIC harbor for our cover shoot. We live in a place where we can enjoy our yachts and the water year-round, so we felt this was the perfect spot to debut the couture we’re loving this fall. A shoot like this doesn’t happen without an incredible team of inspired artists; after all, it takes a proverbial “village.”

This issue celebrates all things fall, from truffle season to the Napa Valley wine crush and the changing of the leaves, which reminds me that nothing ever stays the same. For a person like me, that is not only okay, but inspiring.

Around this time every year, I kick off a new initiative and embark on growing the brand. This year, it’s to bring the pages of ICONIC LIFE magazine into the world of video content creation and video podcasting, creating a complete 360-degree experience for our audience. We love nothing better than to sit down with a decadent print edition in our hands over a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. And I make sure our luxury magazine looks and feels like a luxury magazine with every issue.

When you’re on the run, video is a great way to stay in touch and discover something new, and we are working with an ICONIC team of content creators, producers, directors and editors to bring our brand to life in the best way possible. I’ve turned my podcast into a visual conversation because it’s fun for everyone, including me, to see the faces of my guests. You can watch the latest videos at iconiclife.com.

We love design, and we have a passion for honoring those who are the tops of the top in our Orange County design community, and this issue will introduce you to five new inductees to our Top Designer honorees. Check out who was named this year, starting on page 70.

I’m so proud of my amazing team who works with me to produce ICONIC LIFE magazine. There’s always time to say thank you once again. And to our loyal readers, we do it for you and so appreciate your support!

With Gratitude,

DON’T SWEAT THE FALL STUFF

Summer, winter and spring all have their perks, but autumn has a special place in my heart. Pumpkin chai lattes, cooler weather and the opportunity to switch up my home’s decor all bring me a lot of joy.

Fall is also full of lively high-style fashion, with cornerstone events like the Milan, New York and Paris fashion shows taking place. Each year, I look forward to seeing what the top designers and new creative minds in the industry are working on, gathering inspiration for my own wardrobe and editorial content for ICONIC LIFE

The fashion photography for the cover of this issue was inspired by this year’s runway looks, with power suits and business wear making a bold statement. Skip to page 96 for more looks from our fashion photoshoot featuring Charlotte Tilbury Beauty and ICONIC Max Mara looks.

Beyond the season’s fashion shows, another exciting event happening this fall is the first-ever ICONIC Design Awards Gala, presented by Monogram. The event will honor exceptional interior designers, architects, landscape designers and product designers with a luxurious night of awards and the presentation of a special print issue of ICONIC LIFE magazine, dedicated to the winners of the prestigious competition.

For the first year, the integrity-focused competition celebrates Arizona-based designers, and following our success, we will bring the awards to Orange County next year. You may recognize some of the prestigious judges, several calling Orange County their home—like interior designers Barclay Butera and Donna Johnson.

With so many exciting events and gorgeous foliage around the corner, I look forward to enjoying all that the season has to offer and falling in love with fall all over again.

All my best,

Graff to Open at South Coast Plaza this Fall

One of the most revered brands in fine jewelry will launch with all the glory of the Graff name this fall at South Coast Plaza.

The brand will be showcasing new collections reflective of the next generation of the brand. The newest campaign brings together the brand’s fine diamond collections and high jewelry to capture the many facets of every woman.

Butterfly, Tilda’s Bow, Laurence Graff Signature and Villa La Vigie are the four collections featured. Each collection signifies a new creative journey for Graff; the transformative power of Butterfly, the nostalgic elegance of Tilda’s Bow, the dynamism of Laurence Graff Signature and the strength and beauty of Wild Flower all embrace the path towards a more collection-led approach to storytelling.

With more than 60 years of history, Graff established its reputation of producing historic diamonds, high jewelry and individual pieces. Over time, Graff has branched into the realm of ground-breaking diamond design and craftsmanship in bridal, watches and fragrance. Graff’s reach has quickly grown into the international sector with more than 60 boutiques, resulting in a new audience for the house.

“As the global reach of the Graff business and audience grows, so too does the need to communicate our core values. In line with this, we have also taken the opportunity to evolve our boutique experience, ensuring it reflects our creative direction with a clear focus on a holistic client experience.” says Francois Graff, Chief Executive Officer.

“ We want to ensure that our audiences know exactly who we are and what we stand for. Every jewel we create is crafted with the same exacting precision and devotion as the rare and celebrated stones that have made diamond history. Graff has an incomparable heritage, and it is time for this story to be shared.”

This sleek discovery super yacht makes guests feel like extras in a Bond movie.

38 ICONICLIFE.COM
Photography by Nacho Gutierrez Arribere

Like many people, my first exposure to a “super yacht” was watching a James Bond movie. Having just returned from an 11-day odyssey along the Sorrentine Peninsula and the Adriatic Sea aboard the new Scenic Eclipse II—a super yacht on steroids dubbed as one of the world’s first discovery yachts (one used for pleasure cruising)—I’m the one who is shaken and stirred.

Viewed from the exterior, Scenic Eclipse II is sleek, athletically sloped and tiered like a finely crafted wedding cake, decorated as if clad in Bond’s timeless tuxedo and ready for a once-in-a-lifetime celebration. It’s like a juiced-up, futuristic Aston Martin supercar on water, urging spectators to pull out their cameras and to capture its beauty.

But it was while inside the Scenic Eclipse II that I felt like I was on the set of the latest Bond flick. The ship truly is a destination in itself. Highlights include:

• A central lounge anchored by the jaw-dropping whisky bar and its display of 160 fine whiskys from around the world, with bottles displayed like fine art in a museum; All are free to enjoy, thanks to Scenic Eclipse’s all-inclusive program.

• Nine restaurants and bars catering to every taste, from the fine French-inspired Lumiere, Asian-fusion and sushi-inspired Koko’s, to the intimate and theatrical Night Market where renowned chefs create amazing eight-course meals in front of guests, themed to rotating menus that incorporate Indian, Middle Eastern and Asian cuisines.

• 228 Suite-only accommodations, meaning there’s nearly a 1-to-1 ratio of staff to guests.

• A private butler assigned to each suite, ready to meet every request.

• A full-service luxe spa, complete with infrared sauna chairs, steam rooms, salt relaxation rooms, massage therapists, beauty salons and more.

• An observation terrace with Swarovski telescopes.

• A helicopter and submarine ready to take guests above and below the yacht to explore the sights at ports of call.

• An open navigation deck where guests can observe the ship’s inner workings, talk with the captain and marvel at the Scenic Eclipse’s Global Positioning System, which allows the boat via

satellite technology to remain steady in place without dropping anchor.

• Cruise-ship-sized stabilizers that steady the ship in rough waters and are a must for anyone who, like me, is prone to seasickness.

• Expedition-worthy boat tenders that seamlessly transfer guests from ship to shore and back every 15 minutes while visiting ports of call.

• Top-shelf entertainment from singing and dancing, to trivia contests and movie screenings.

With so much to experience on board, it’s easy to forget that what makes Scenic Eclipse especially unique is its ability to venture where most large cruise ships cannot. On our trip, we effortlessly glided into the “fjords” of Kotor, Montenegro, and through the Grand Canal in Venice. Once in port, the excursion possibilities were varied and plentiful (and like the whisky, included), with options for those seeking easy walking or bus tours to more active adventures like hiking and e-biking.

Had we docked in just one place for 11 days, the trip would have been amazing simply by experiencing all that Scenic Eclipse II had to offer. But couple the onboard luxury with the awe-inspiring beauty of the places we visited (Sorrento, Lipari, Taormina, Otranto, Kotor, Hvar, Dubrovnik, Rovinj and Venice), and you have the makings of a once-in-alifetime adventure.

Or, as Bond would say, “Double Oh Heaven.”

An Innovative French Bistro Embraces Gluten-Free in Irvine

Maldon’s Bistro, a French American eatery, transports you from Orange County to the streets of Europe with a gluten-free-accommodating menu that might have you saying Je T’aime Maldon’s (I love you, Maldon’s)! Savor a delectable combination of American and French dishes, pastries and baked goodies made fresh daily without impeding your gluten-free lifestyle.

A breakfast and lunch café, Maldon’s Bistro opened in May and is an innovative family-owned and family-operated café in the financial district of Irvine. What started as a family affair named from a combination of family initials, is now run daily by Laura O’Neal, her husband Michael, and her brother David Nunez. The creative minds behind the delectable menu today are Chef Juan Carlos Tapia, and Pastry Chef and daughter Morgan O’Neal–who is currently staging with 3 Michelin star Chef Dominique Crenn in San Francisco.

41 ICONICLIFE.COM

Fun family note: Daughter Demi and her husband Andrew Parish, who were initially involved in Maldon’s, run Porch & Swing, a Charleston-inspired restaurant next door.

I had the opportunity to speak with Laura O’Neal about her innovative approach.

“I’m passionate about what goes into what we serve because years ago, I became very ill and learned I had Celiac disease,” O’Neal says, which can make people hypersensitive to gluten. “That inspired me to work in my kitchen testing recipes and creating great breads, entrees and desserts around our gluten-free concept.”

O’Neal graduated with a science degree in biology from Chapman University and used her experience to craft a unique, proprietary flour blend that makes her dishes indistinguishable from those with gluten.

“We haven’t had anyone come to us and say they could tell it was gluten-free,” O’Neal explains. “The majority of our customers don’t have any idea, and if they do ask, they say, ‘There’s no way that is gluten-free.’” The flour blend is a key ingredient in most dishes served and is also available for purchase in the restaurant.

There are many delicious items on the menu; some fan favorites include a homemade French onion soup, crème brûlée, nutella crepe, and decorative wedge salad all beautifully plated to give that authentic French feeling. The bakery offerings are both gluten- and seed-oil-free.

“We do really think about presentation,” O’Neal says. “All of our dishes are very thought-based, with a lot of detail that goes into the taste. It’s more of a home-cooked meal. It’s made with love; with our pastries, there’s nothing that looks like it’s been carbon copied or punched out. Our dishes have a more artisan look.”

Since the grand opening, O’Neal has emphasized the importance of the community connection that has been established between customers and her family. Working hard to make every experience unique and enjoyable, the O’Neals treat their customers like they’re part of the family.

“It’s fun because we’ve made many good friends through the restaurant,” O’Neal said. “We treat them like family, and honestly, it’s a blessing; anyone that comes through that door, it’s such a blessing. We really care.”

Watch for exciting upcoming events that inspire Maldon’s customers to explore wine and cheese events. And keep an eye out for our Publisher Renee Dee, who can be frequently spotted at Maldon’s sipping the fantastic coffee, savoring the eggs benedict and always the guilt-free, gluten-free blueberry muffin.

WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE

Must-have coffee makers that will sparkle in your kitchen—plus, don’t miss amazing coffees to pair with them.

The best part of waking up is the scent of freshly brewed coffee wafting through the air motivating you to have a wonderful day. If you are not able to get to your nearest coffee shop where they will create a fabulous drink for you, you can do it yourself at home.

There are a myriad of coffee makers to choose from but not all are created equally. So, if you are looking for exceptional style, longevity, luxury and quality, these three machines are sure to enhance your coffee experience and showcase your stylish kitchen. Their sleek sophistication paired with endless creative choices of coffee drinks you can make with the push of a button make them smart choices.

The coffee beans you choose impact how tasty, smooth and sublime your drink will be. I have personally tried these brands and can attest to a fabulous cup of joe with all.

JURA

Z10

If you are looking for endless options for making hot and iced specialty coffee brews with freshly ground coffee beans, teas and milk drinks, then try the Swiss-made JURA Z10. It not only brews the coffee to

44 ICONICLIFE.COM

perfection but also boasts a built-in grinder and provides many state-of-the-art options on how to foam, fluff and heat the milk to the desired temperature.

JURA, a Swiss company, is known for their attention to detail in design and elegance makes long lasting quality products.

“I picked JURA as they have a reputation for quality and durability. I bought a JURA Nespresso machine when I was living in Geneva back in 2006 and it’s still running today,“ AJ Bernstein, Las Vegas-based tech executive explains. “Then I purchased the Z10 as needed to replace my daily Starbucks run, as I started to work at home during the pandemic. I love that I can make the perfect cup, without any effort, my favorite part of the Z10 is the refrigerated milk storage unit, which allows me to keep the machine ready to go without additional setup.”

JURA’s latest model, the GIGA 10 brews 35 different beverages and has two bean containers and two grinders.

Pair with one of my all time favorite coffees, Imagine Kona Coffee from Buddha’s Cup, for a smooth low-acid coffee. For a stronger coffee, try Kiss Cafe Beige Medium Dark Roast.

MIELE CM5

Miele is rightfully known for producing quality products and their elegant coffee makers boast brewing perfection. The CM5 also has a built in bean grinder that preserves flavor and seems to enhance the aroma of freshly brewed coffee.

Miele’s coffee machines prepare a wide variety of coffee specialties ranging from espresso, ristretto, coffee, cappuccino, latte macchiato and café latte. This is in addition to a coffee grinder and one touch for two option, which creates two coffees at the touch of one button. Also, the CM5 can dispense

about 8 cups of a coffee continuously or a coffee pot can even be utilized. I find this coffee maker to be intuitive and a pleasure to use. The hardest part is figuring out what drink to make.

While I like to grind my own coffee beans, this machine also provides an option to use ready ground coffee. It also dispenses water for tea and the milk frother can also be

used to create the most decadent cup of hot chocolate. It’s easy to use, and the coffee is spectacular.

Pair with Sea Island Coffee and Methodical Blue Boy Coffee.

CUISINART COFFEE CENTER BARISTA BAR 4-IN-1 COFFEEMAKER

For a taste of elegance try Cuisinart’s Barista Bar 4-IN-1 Coffeemaker, it can brew 12 cups of drip coffee and has programmable time, temperature and strength settings. Its compatible with Nespresso® OriginalLine-style capsule and with several other brands, too.

A variety of drinks such as cappuccinos and lattes can be created with the steam wand which will froth and steamed milk. In addition, it can make single serve cups in 6, 8 and 10 ounces sizes. It is versatile and compact, saving space while looking sharp.

Pair with Handyman Coffee.

What happens after an NHL Hall of Famer and an Olympian athlete retire? They open one of Southern California’s best fine-dining restaurants.

Selanne Steak Tavern, known for its superb California and French wine selections and upscale steakhouse cuisine, won yet another award, the prestigious “Best of Award of Excellence” from Wine Spectator for the seventh consecutive year.

Located in Laguna Beach, this delectable steakhouse opened in November 2013 and is owned by Hockey Hall of Famer Teemu Selanne, and local Orange County businessman Kevin Pratt. Selanne is known as The Finnish Flash, a 2007 Stanley Cup winner, a former star player for the Anaheim Ducks and six-time Olympian. Today the two are award-winning restaurant owners.

CHEF RECOMMENDS

If you’re someone who looks up the menu online before going to a restaurant, we’ve got you covered. Here are some picks from the chef:

FIRST COURSE

Pacific Diver Scallops

There are several succulent starters, but we’d have to go with this one. These tender, mouthwatering hors d’oeuvre are served with sauteed mushrooms or cauliflower—perfectly complementary to bring out the best flavors.

MAIN DISH

Flat Iron Eight-Ounce Wagyu

You probably are familiar with wagyu beef from Japan known for its savory marbled flavor, and it’s no different at Selanne Steak Tavern.

SIGNATURE SIDE

Selanne’s Mac and Cheese

Past enthusiasts will want to add this side dish to the lineup. A serious upgrade to the traditional mac and cheese, this is a five-cheese fondue with a brioche crumb topping that pleases carnivores and vegetarians alike.

TO DRINK

Selanne’s Signature Blend Limoncello

Selanne’s has a wine list primarily focused on Napa cult wines and those from other California vineyards, including chardonnays, cabernets, cabernet blends and pinot noirs. But the list is also recognized for its collection of wines from Burgundy, France. If you can’t decide, Selanne’s Signature Blend Limoncello gives you a taste you’ll remember.

ROOM FOR DESSERT?

Monkey Bread with Brioche

You can’t go wrong with dessert here. We like the Monkey Bread for its fun, classic feel prepared with up-to-date twists. A comforting end to a meal, the brioche bread makes this one of the tastiest desserts Selanne’s has to offer.

heaven OCEAN

Transforming this Corona Del Mar cliff-side casa from 80’s vibes to a modern coastal icon was a challenge worth the effort.

51 ICONICLIFE.COM

This isn’t the typical ocean-themed home you’ll see along the coast. When Greg and Wendy Blackband of Blackband Design began work on Project Ocean—a renovation of a coastal home from the 80s that had undergone a renovation 10 years prior— they were inspired by the home’s existing windows and eye-catching coffered ceilings.

“The house was already interesting architecturally because it has these leaded-glass windows that we were not replacing,” Wendy Blackband says. “It was a bit heavy-handed with a lot of dark oak cabinets and beams and these high coffered ceilings. When you first walked in, it almost felt cathedral-like. How do we take these 80’s elements and give it a more modern vibe?”

The first consideration was spacing. “These homes on the ocean are not very deep,” Wendy Blackband says. “You really have to be tight with your space planning and layouts to take advantage of the ocean views while making as much space as possible for storage and design.”

In addition to the limited space, the design team ran into some structural challenges.

“The previously renovated house was poorly done,” Wendy Blackband says. “We found a lot of pipes that were not connected, and the client had said over the years they’ve had many leaks and had not gotten them fixed. We also found scaffold poles holding up the top deck, which is pretty scary.

“We started peeling off the layers of the deck when we increased the size by 30 inches toward the ocean, hence the need for structural engineers on the project. We found the steel underneath was rotten.”

Despite the challenges, the finished design transformed the house into a modern ocean haven with stunning custom pieces.

“The coffee tables in the great room were custom made, so we designed how big we wanted them to be, what we wanted the bases to be and how we wanted them to be integrated,” Wendy Blackband explains. “We used a variety of slab materials throughout the home, so we had leftover slabs that we tried to integrate into the coffee table.”

The counter and backsplash in the kitchen were crafted with a custom slab to the design specifications. “The pieces themselves required some very careful, expert cutting,” Greg Blackband points out. “We tried to bring each slab in as large as possible so there are fewer joints.

“Another custom feature is the kitchen island. There’s not a tremendous amount of space to have a free-floating dining room table, so we added a banquet to the island. It’s a great way to use the area and tie into the design of what’s going on in the kitchen.

“On the left side of the fireplace, there’s an area where you have a chair, but the homeowners also wanted it to serve as a desk area,” Wendy Blackband says.” A custom cabinet transforms into desk in an innovative use of space. That’s a feature not just in the living room but also something we custom-designed for another desk area downstairs too.”

One of the most significant decisions they had to make was whether or not to paint the large ceiling beams.

“In the end, we painted them from light to dark, and it’s very contrasting. I just love the way it looks,” Wendy Blackband remarks. “It would have been easy to say, ‘let’s just paint them white and make them go away,’ but I really felt like keeping them dark gave this contrast and pop that the kitchen needed.”

The home’s design incorporates elements of luxurious burled wood, stunning dining chairs from Brazil in varied colors, upholstered headboards, and drop-down pendants of alabaster to provide a sophisticated-yet-modern look.

“We had a very good experience with the client, who was totally amenable to our ideas,” Wendy Blackband says. “They were willing to push the envelope as far as the design. It takes a special client to really trust the process and be open to it. We were grateful that they were because it made the design sophisticated and much more interesting.”

Perfect Pairing

Skip the flight to Paris—a gastronomic journey of fine French cuisine awaits at Knife Pleat in South Coast Plaza.

If you love to travel, but the record-breaking crowds in Europe put your vacay on hold, an escape to a local French-inspired bistro can transport you to a world far away.

Such was the case when I dined with a foodie friend at Knife Pleat at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa. We love the fashion-inspired name, perfect for a destination in a fashion mecca. However, while a knife pleat is a sharp corner on a skirt, the interiors of this fine-dining destination are soft and elegant.

Opened in 2019, Knife Pleat is a collaboration between husband-and-wife duo Yassmin Sarmadi and Chef Tony Esnault. Designed to feel like you are dining in the couple’s home, the interiors are the joint effort of restaurateur Sarmadi and her architect, who took over a year to craft the perfect setting for Esnault’s innovative, modern French cuisine.

59 ICONICLIFE.COM

The duo met in Los Angeles following Esnault’s kitchen tour as a chef at fine restaurants in France and New York. His impressive resume includes the legendary Louis XV restaurant in Monte Carlo, where he met his mentor, French chef Alain Ducasse.

In 2004, Esnault was credited with reinventing the concept of the hotel restaurant by elevating the cuisine, which earned him “Best Hotel Chef of America” by Food & Wine magazine, and earned his restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton Boston four AAA Diamonds and four Mobil Stars. In 2005, Esnault reunited with his mentor in New York City, working as executive chef at Ducasse’s Essex House and opening Adour at St. Regis in 2007. His work with Ducasse helped garner the restaurants a combined five Michelin stars and three stars from The New York Times.

When the duo met, Sarmadi, a powerful force herself in the culinary scene, owned Church & State in Los Angeles and brought Esnault on board. They later married and opened the fine-dining restaurant Spring to showcase fresh, local ingredients from the south of France before planting roots in Orange County with Knife Pleat, where we dined on this night.

We were offered champagne from a vintage bar cart. I started with my favorite: Champagne Rosé, a grand reserve brut from Chateau de Bligny. Perfectly chilled, the sharp bubbles alerted me to the tasty experience that was to come. My companion chose the mocktail pairing (I love that they offer this), which was so on point that we had to question if it had alcohol. The creations were inventive and had bold flavor profiles.

We were offered several tastes for our amusebouche. A spring pea tart with caviar on top, dusted with the smallest edible flower, and a savory puff were presented first, and then a tiny dish of roasted peaches with tomato foam. The juxtaposition of sweet and savory was a table pleaser.

Our six-course tasting menu was artfully presented, and the wine pairings were explained for each course. The stars of any tasting menu are caviar, truffles, lobster and chocolate, and we enjoyed them all.

We began with a golden Osetra caviar on top of abalone, kumiai oyster with flecks of dulse seaweed, and a cucumber bavarois, a set cream often used for desserts. Packed with flavor, our tasting menu was off to a brilliant start. Our next course was a stunning snow pea presentation with Stracciatella cheese, prosciutto, pickled onion and mint.

62 ICONICLIFE.COM

Before even arriving at our table, my guest smelled and recognized the Australian black winter truffles coming our way. The truffles were generously shaved over pastina with the delicious complement of Parmigiano Reggiano for the next course.

We agreed that when the lobster course arrived—topped with lobster hollandaise to make sure you knew you were splurging—it was the most perfectly prepared either of us “lobster veterans” had enjoyed.

The final savory course was Cascade Creek lamb with violet artichokes, apricot, and green tomato chimichurri. Paired with another fave, the Chateauneuf-Du-Pape 2005, this course fully complements all the flavors I love.

We ended our elegant meal with several sweet treats for dessert, from the signature house-made macaroons and a chocolate mousse with raspberries to a spicey chocolate sorbet.

Throughout the evening, the attentive team provided enough detail to help us appreciate the cuisine without denying us an evening to dine, enjoy good conversation and have some much-needed laughs.

CONTEMPORARY

Perched on the cliffs soaring above the Pacific Ocean, Corona del Mar has a Mediterranean flair

DESIGNER Anne Michaelsen Design, BUILDER Ray Lewis, ARCHITECT Cynthia Childs, LANDSCAPE Bridgette Skinner, PHOTOGRAPHER Ryan Garvin

The owners, who have lived in the area for more than 20 years, transformed their Mediterranean abode into a modern architectural paragon.

With the couple’s youngest child leaving home, the time was right for the Anne Michaelsen Design (AMD) team to reimagine the house for the newly empty nesters. “The house had been remodeled several times over decades that left the space without a unified look,” Michaelsen says. “The homeowners wanted better flow and a more contemporary design.”

Working with a $1.5 million budget, the team, including builder Ray Lewis, architect Cynthia Childs and landscape designer Bridget Skinner, spent a year planning the whole-house remodel and over a year renovating the 4,100-square-foot home.

“Anne led us to the right architect, builder and landscape designer and collaborated with them to bring our dream home to fruition,” the homeowners say. “She knows how to work and lead a team so everyone can express their best work.”

64 ICONICLIFE.COM
65 ICONICLIFE.COM
66 ICONICLIFE.COM

GO WITH THE FLOW

The previous remodels left the house with too many small rooms that rendered it choppy and nonfunctional. The AMD team redesigned the house with larger spaces that could be reduced as needed.

“We took three separate rooms and created a large great room and a library/office space,” Michaelsen says. “Then we created a true entry hall, so guests didn’t immediately enter the new great room.” The office is outfitted with sliding doors that can be opened to the great room or closed off depending on the family’s needs.

In addition, they removed one bedroom to create two guest suites, each with a private bath. “The owners felt that these ensuites would be better for when their children come home to visit now and in the future with their spouses and families,” Michaelsen points out.

THE SUITE LIFE

While the primary suite was large, it suffered from the same lack of cohesion that ailed the rest of the house. The team improved the room’s flow by working with a soothing palette of neutrals and pops of blue tones that epitomize coastal chic. A fireplace was added to elevate the coziness factor and the wall behind the bed was covered in a gray wallpaper reminiscent of an ancient wall adding visual interest to the room. Large walk-in closets now provide the additional storage the couple hoped for.

An oval freestanding tub is the focal point of the ensuite bathroom, with faux-finished walls and unique tiles that complement the design. The room opens to the front garden, creating a zen, spa-like setting.

67 ICONICLIFE.COM

AMD also designed a second suite for their grown children and other guests. The space is tranquil, with white and gray neutrals decorated with purple accents. A third room with twin beds is a nod to the future when grandchildren might need a place to stay. The standout feature is a mural of an iconic design from a French company. The colorful wall art appeals to kids but is sophisticated enough for the room to double as a space for adult guests.

ART FOCUS

A vital component of the remodel was working in the homeowner’s extensive art collection and using it to inspire additional design elements.

“We looked at the spaces to find the best ones for their favorite works,” Michaelsen says. “We used lighting to highlight the art and we intentionally chose wallpaper and lighting fixtures that were themselves works of art for use throughout the home.”

The team got creative in the entryway by using a John Pomp light fixture as a sculpture set against Nobilis wallpaper. The result is a design that offers lovely ambient lighting. In the kitchen, a unique stone backsplash juxtaposed against white cabinets and a black granite countertop is as visually attractive as a work of art.

68 ICONICLIFE.COM

ENTERTAINING EASE

The couple loves entertaining, but the flow of the home and its outdoor space also made that a challenge. “We reimagined the outdoor spaces so they can have large parties that flow inside to out,” Michaelsen says.

In the backyard, they leveled out height differences that created a feeling of choppiness and took down a fire feature dividing the two areas. In its place, they added a fire pit perfect for s’mores, an outdoor kitchen and a bocce ball court. The new elements work around the existing pool and sunken dining area, making the backyard a true oasis for entertaining.

The result of the extensive remodel is a stunning space that blends beauty, functionality and meets the needs of the homeowners.

“Anne does not create a ‘one note’ look like many designers; she uses her educated and informed eye to create a truly personal and unique space for each client,” the homeowner says.

“She took our art, lifestyle and experiences into account and incorporated the home’s design, decor and furniture around it. It feels like home to us.”

Born and raised in Italy in a close family of five, Arianna Noppenberger was nurtured by a loving mother and taught strong values by her father. Contrary to the Italian tradition of raising a girl in those days, her parents inspired her to travel and become independent at a young age.

In 1980, Noppenberger moved to Bologna in Northern Italy to attend college. She graduated with a master’s degree in law and human resources in 1987, but her dream was to become an interior designer.

ARIANNA NOPPENBERGER

Following her heart, she moved to Milan, the “Capital of Italian Design,” and enrolled in the Instituto Europeo di Design (IED) interior design program.

After graduating in 1990, she traveled to California with her roommate to experience the progressive work of renowned architects, including Frank Lloyd Wright, Oskar Schindler and Richard Neutra. It was in Laguna Beach, Calif., where she met Horst Noppenberger, founder of Horst Architects, Inc., and two years later, they married.

Noppenberger spent seven years at Horst Architects studio, immersing herself in every phase of the work while learning English and familiarizing herself with feet and inches rather than meters and centimeters. Drawing, visiting construction sites and utilizing her law background to handle business became part of her routine.

In 2002, Noppenberger founded Aria Design, Inc., specializing in high-end residential work. The firm’s portfolio includes high-profile projects along the Southern California coastline, with several featured in national and international publications. Aria Design’s work is characterized by timeless elegance and restrained simplicity, guided by Noppenberger’s exposure to the European design aesthetic and her search for inspiration during visits to Italy.

With a multicultural team, Aria Design takes on projects from initial concept to completion, collaborating with prominent architects, builders, and landscape and lighting professionals to deliver designs of enduring quality and distinction. The company’s dedication to excellence and client satisfaction has resulted in many happy and repeat clients who often refer Aria Design to others.

Gastronomic Gems

106 ICONICLIFE.COM
It’s truffle-hunting season, and we can’t wait to unearth this aromatic treasure.
107 ICONICLIFE.COM
108 ICONICLIFE.COM

In the opulent realm of culinary delights, few treasures rival the enigmatic allure of truffles. Considered the “diamonds of the kitchen” by renowned gastronome Jean Anthelme BrillatSavarin, truffles are highly prized for their exquisite taste and aroma. They have become a staple in the finest cuisines, including Italian and French haute gastronomy.

Indulge your senses as we embark on a gastronomic journey to unravel the secrets of truffles. From their mysterious origins to the meticulous art of harvesting, and the seductive culinary applications that have enchanted the palates of the discerning elite, prepare to be whisked away to truffle hunting season.

WHAT ARE TRUFFLES?

Truffles are fungi grown underground and cultivated and harvested in select regions throughout the world. These elusive treasures grow around the roots of trees, favoring hosts such as poplar, beech and oak. They have a distinctive musky aroma and a rich, earthy flavor prized by chefs and food lovers. While numerous truffle varieties exist, not all are safe for human consumption. Many wild and non-commercial types are toxic, requiring caution and expertise in discerning the edible ones.

Distributed worldwide, truffles manifest in many varieties distinguished by their color, shape, size and flavor. Unlike the typical capped mushrooms such as boletus fungi, truffles closely resemble small potatoes at first glance. However, do not be deceived by their appearance, as these natural marvels are bursting with unparalleled flavor.

Truffles can be found in many places, but they mainly flourish in the bountiful regions of France and Italy. Among the most prevalent truffle species is the alba, or white truffle, captivating the senses with its delectable aroma. Growing abundantly in Italy, France and Spain, these exquisite mushrooms can fetch prices as high as $2,300 per pound.

If you have yet to experience the pleasure of truffles, you are undoubtedly missing out on an extraordinary encounter that has the potential to transform your culinary journey forever.

109 ICONICLIFE.COM

THE YIN AND YANG OF TRUFFLES

While the world of truffles boasts more than 200 varieties, each with its unique flavor, price and usage, they can generally be classified into two categories—black truffles and white truffles.

Black truffles are more accessible to the average home cook with their affordable price tag. While their aroma may be less pronounced, their robust flavor withstands the heat, making them perfect for enhancing sauces, infusing compound butters or enriching indulgent risottos.

White truffles, the epitome of delicacy, originate from the northern regions of Italy. They are a gourmet treasure infused with an intense, pungent aroma. White truffles are typically savored raw and sparingly, given their rarity and potent flavor. The decadence of shaved white truffles delicately gracing elegant dishes like pasta and risotto elevates them to new heights. A mere touch of this prized delicacy can transform an exquisite creation into a culinary masterpiece.

ON THE SCENT

Shaped like small, asymmetrical balls, truffles emit a distinctive earthy aroma and offer a flavor profile unlike any other. Historically, truffle hunting employed female pigs due to their acute sense of smell and their attraction to androstenol, a hormone found in truffles. Pigeons, surprisingly adept hunters with proper training, can also assist in the search for these subterranean delicacies. However, dogs have taken over this role due to their ease of training and aversion to consuming the truffles once detected.

Truffle hunting occurs in such picturesque landscapes as New Zealand, North America’s Pacific Northwest, New York and Australia, and the renowned truffle havens of Tuscany; Alba in Piedmont, Italy; and the Périgord region in France.

Harvesting a truffle requires a delicate process. Once mature, the truffle is carefully excavated by digging up the plant, selectively removing sections of the root system at various depths and replanting the remaining portion to ensure future growth.

IN THE KITCHEN

With their distinctive mushroom-like flavor, truffles possess an intensity that sets them apart from ordinary fungi. Describing their taste can be challenging, but once you experience it, you’ll understand why they are so highly revered in culinary circles.

Some compare the flavor of truffles to the scent memory of a summertime forest floor after a refreshing rain, with a vibrant green freshness. Others liken them to a savory, meaty profile with hints of nuttiness or brininess reminiscent of the finest green olives. It’s a taste that must be savored to truly appreciate its allure.

Working with fresh truffles requires some finesse, as these delicate ingredients can be temperamental. Here are a few tips to make the most of your truffle experience in the comfort of your kitchen:

Let the truffles shine: Allow truffles to take center stage by incorporating them into mild recipes that highlight their distinctive flavors. Cream sauces and potato-based dishes are ideal companions, allowing the truffles to stand out.

Master the mandoline: To maximize the truffle’s impact, use a mandoline to achieve the thinnest slices possible. While it may seem excessive, this technique ensures you extract the full flavor of the truffle.

Embrace gentle heat: Avoid subjecting fresh truffles to excessive or rapid heat, which can diminish their flavor and aroma. Opt for low or no-heat cooking methods to preserve their delicate qualities.

Truffles offer more than just a sumptuous dining experience—they also can be used to infuse other foods with their exquisite aroma. Truffle oil stands as a prime example of its versatility. With its robust aroma, truffle oil should be used sparingly to avoid overpowering other flavors in a dish. Commonly made with olive oil, it beautifully complements cuisine with its smooth and distinct flavor.

Indulge in a simple pleasure by drizzling a touch of truffle oil over popcorn, elevating this classic snack with a burst of unexpected flavor. Heighten the experience by infusing the oil with white peppercorns and fresh thyme leaves before drizzling it over lightly salted kernels.

Another popular method of incorporating truffles into dishes is to thinly shave them on top of a cooked meal. Pasta dishes, risottos, sauces, and grated truffles sprinkled over seafood or meat are all common applications.

What is the secret behind opening the world’s heaviest doors and windows?

Enormous, beautiful doors and windows have become highly sought-after design elements in today’s modern homes and businesses, appearing in luxury spaces worldwide. While a 12-foot or taller door makes a statement, opening something that large can be a challenge. So, what if your door could automatically open for you instead?

That’s the benefit of PJ and Brenda Gruetzmacher’s latest venture, Summit Automation, dedicated to bringing windows and doors to life through automation that brings the outside in.

“I spent more than 30 years in the aerospace industry,” PJ Gruetzmacher, CEO of Summit Automation, says. With his wife, Brenda, chief financial officer for Summit Automation, the duo knew that they had to find their own business to escape frequent travel, spend more time with their family and follow their passions.

“We’ve essentially turned the company from a small shop into a well-run business with room for enormous growth and

international footprint, with wide acceptance by the world’s largest and most recognizable door and window manufacturers.” PJ Gruetzmacher says.

A cutting-edge company, Summit Automation invents, engineers, manufactures and provides automation system solutions sought by leading architects, builders, door manufacturers and installers—more so than other automation solutions on the market according to PJ.

Dependable, smooth, quiet, and safe products are the key reason that Summit Automation is a top choice among the leaders in the design industry. The only ETL Listed and UL325 Compliant systems available on the market, safety and security are top priorities for the Gruetzmacher duo.

Drinking Sights IN THE WineValleyNapa Country

From St. Helena to Yountville, this girls’ trip to Napa Valley was a top-shelf experience.

116 ICONICLIFE.COM

It all started with a podcast that turned into a new friendship. Late last year, I had the opportunity to visit with the legendary Tor Kenward about his new book, Memories of a Vintner. He shared stories from his 50-year career working with other Napa notables like Thomas Keller, Julia Child and Robert Mondavi and how they ignited the flame that turned Napa Valley into an exquisite culinary capital.

He also recounted his memory of the Judgement of Paris in 1976, where a Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon from Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars and a chardonnay by Chateau Montelena Winery’s winemaker Michael Grgich won for the first time against French wines.

More than 40 years later, Tor’s wine would win the replay of that ICONIC competition in 2020.

Some things go full circle.

Listen to the Tor Kenward episode of our Iconic Hour podcast.

117 ICONICLIFE.COM

The podcast ended with Tor inviting me to revisit Napa and say hello when I did. Leaving no generous invitation behind, I made plans for my trip. What I didn’t know was that I would experience all the heights I’d hoped for and discover a renewed love of the place that treated me so well.

Leaning on my ICONIC LIFE friendships, I landed in Oakland and grabbed my Go Rentals SUV. An hour later, I was on local roads passing vineyard after vineyard, remembering some and remarking about the region’s massive growth since I last visited.

As we passed Grgich Hills on the left, I recalled meeting Michael Grgich in his signature beret on the last trip. This time around, I learned of the festivities and even got invited to his 100th birthday party, clearly a triumph that speaks of the good living in Napa.

On the way to our resort, the very charming Oakville Grocery answered the call of our growling stomachs with gourmet salads, limited-production cheeses and, of course, bubbly by the glass. Sitting on the patio, overlooking vineyards and the Napa Valley Wine Train, we had no idea how good we’d soon have it.

We arrived at Meadowood Napa Valley, one of the most romantic retreats in California and one of the earliest luxury resorts in Napa Valley, to find lush, tree-lined roads and charming, private grounds below the ridges of the surrounding wooded canyons.

The lodgings, sprinkled across the canyon for privacy and serenity, combine the wine country’s distinctive blend of rustic and refined materials. Our tree-lined suite was light and airy with cottage-style interiors, a fireplace that can be used year-round and French doors opening to a scenic deck, perfect for morning coffee or a late-evening glass of wine.

The resort staff was welcoming, as if we were staying at a friend’s home. From the pool to the spa to Forum for dining, we felt immersed in nature in our local St. Helena accommodations. We checked in briefly but were soon on the run for our first Napa Valley appointment, a tasting with Tor at Wheeler Farms in St. Helena.

The winemaking center sits on 12 acres and includes gardens, orchards, a state-of-the-art winery, vineyards, and a tasting room with an open kitchen, from which savory canapés prepared by the culinary team were presented. We tasted a curated selection of wines with Tor and thoroughly enjoyed the conversation with one of Napa’s ICONIC figures. He treated us to his 2019 TOR Cabernet Sauvignon from Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard, earning 100 points.

Tor gave us an excellent overview of the region and the 16 viticultural areas of the Valley, including boutique grape growers who supply the best of the best fruit. Throughout the trip, this education formed the foundation for our deeper understanding of the area. Two “Live Beautifully” hours later, before we departed, Tor introduced us to literally the other man I wanted to meet on this trip … he randomly stopped by.

“Renee, you’re going to be pretty excited to meet this guy,” he said, introducing me to David Breeden, chef de cuisine at The French Laundry, the most coveted restaurant reservation on my bucket list. Within minutes, my return trip to Napa and a dream dinner were in the works. Who’s coming with me in September?

That evening, we dined at Forum on the property at the Meadowood. The highly acclaimed Restaurant at Meadowood, the former home of Michelin-starred Chef Christopher Kostow, is closed now, but plans are in the works for his return. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner featuring local ingredients and top-shelf service. This would not be the only time during our trip to experience fresh spring peas.

The next morning an exquisite spread of coffee, fruit and pastry was delivered to our outside deck to enjoy with birds chirping and soft breezes. This perfect start to my day led me up the road to the rustic spa house. Both the resort and the spa have received the Forbes five-star award, and this spa has officially received my praise as my favorite, from the architecture to the interiors. Each treatment room is a suite with a full bath and aromatic steam shower.

I enjoyed the signature massage with the Essential Journey add-on that included a consultation with my knowledgeable therapist, who offered tips on daily habits for well-being. The service started with a steam shower, for which I selected a personalized scent. About 15 minutes later, I was immersed in a heated spa bed, where I had an expert massage followed by an organic cold-pressed juice and meditation time in the garden.

I walked my highly relaxed self to the pool. Rather than chase around and spoil the tranquil state, I stayed at the pool all afternoon to enjoy the fresh air and quiet surroundings. Later that day, I was introduced to Kelli White, the director of the Meadowood Wine Center, who has developed a robust offering of wine experiences, classes and tours to elevate any Napa trip.

We recently heard that PRESS had earned its first Michelin star, so we knew its tasting menu had our name on it. Its high ceilings with beams and a fireplace centerpiece felt so Napa to us, exuding high-end wine country vibes and boasting the most extensive collection of Napa wines in the world, thanks to Samantha Rudd. We were impressed by Chef Philip Tessier, who presented a beautiful tasting menu that night, starting with, yes, fresh green pea gremolata as a palette cleanser.

A tip: When offered a caviar pretzel at PRESS, say yes. It’s an enhancement to the menu, but memorable and decadent. We enjoyed Kusshi oysters with green fig mignonette and whipped coconut water, squash blossoms with Parmigiano Reggiano, and American Wagyu with horseradish leaf and morel jus. We finished with a decadent chocolate dessert with hints of orange and olive oil sorbet. The service and the plating were equally impressive. I highly recommend it.

Following a decadent, let’s admit it, calorie-laden meal, we embarked on two of Napa’s best pastimes to burn the calories … so to say … hiking and wine tasting (hey, there can be a lot of walking and arm lifting when touring a winery.)

With the bar set oh so high, we visited a friend’s Silver Trident vineyard in Yountville. We had our first-ever craft potato chip pairing with wine in a Ralph Lauren Home gallery. The entire town of Yountville is charming and home to many wonderful restaurants, like Thomas Keller’s Ad Hoc, Bouchon (where we dined that night) and La Calenda.

You can’t visit Napa without stopping at the oldest, most ICONIC destination, Silverado. The 150-year-old landmark began as a private estate and now boasts two championship golf courses, three swimming pools, tennis courts and a 16,000-square-foot spa. We dined at The Grill for lunch and returned to the Mansion Bar & Terrace later. Renovations are underway at this historic spot, with announcements coming soon.

As we continued our wine-tasting journey, the goal was quality over quantity, filling our glasses with good wine and our hearts with great conversation.

Given that we had been tasting and drinking 100-point wines for the first half of our trip, our concierge recommended Lithology, near Meadowood, for a tasting in the exquisite Alejandro Bulgheroni Estate.

Our host that afternoon shared that Napa has some of the world’s most diverse soils in any wine region, produced by the movement of the earth’s plates. Lithology is named for the study of the rocks that make soils, particularly in this region. They call their wines terroir-driven wines inspired by the earth. And we enjoyed the full-bodied, earthy wines we were served.

With a bold goal by the team to produce the best wines in Napa, we tasted four—100 points, 99 points, 98 points, 99 points. (Who could go home and drink wine after this?)

We finished our trip with a truly lovely tour of an exquisite winery with beautiful gardens, a bucolic farm table under a canopy of grapevines and a modern tasting room overlooking a pond. We visited the wine cave and grounds of Rudd Winery, and the story of the family’s commitment to quality and passion for wine was an inspiring end to a beautiful trip.

The late Leslie Rudd fulfilled a dream by getting his hands on exactly the property he wanted, and his wife, Susan, oversaw acres and acres of manicured gardens and stunning outdoor spaces. Today, their daughter, Samantha Rudd (yes, owns PRESS), oversees the winery with an eye toward organic farming. The wines have a depth comparable to the experience on the property.

This idyllic spot was the perfect capstone for a trip that surpassed our expectations. The judges have given it the maximum number of points.

ROUTE S CEN THE

124 ICONICLIFE.COM

It’s that time of year again. Crisp air greeting us first thing in the morning, pumpkin spiced … well, just about everything lining the grocery store shelves, and the excitement of the upcoming holiday season swiftly approaching.

But perhaps the most significant indicator of change is when the lush green tree line turns bold shades of yellow, orange, copper and red. These magical autumn displays taking place across the country offer an enticing reason to head out of town and take in the views. Here are ICONIC’s picks for some of the best fall foliage spots across the U.S.

NIC 125 ICONICLIFE.COM
Enjoy a kaleidoscope of colors from coast to coast…check out where to see the best leaves of the season.

THE OZARKS Arkansas

While you may have heard of the Ozarks from a TV series of the same name, the 1.2 million acres of breathtaking views have plenty to offer. Beginning the second week of October and through early November, the Ozark Mountains’ beauty is at its peak, and the palette of beautiful colors is in full swing.

Due to the Ozarks being home to many species of trees, the color changes can happen at various times, providing a broad timeframe to experience the fall foliage and surrounding wilderness. While reveling in the scenery and fresh air, take advantage of the amazing stargazing opportunities. Also, keep your eye out for elk, as they can often be seen this time of year.

GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS

North Carolina and Tennessee

In addition to being one of the most visited National Parks, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is home to 100 species of native trees, making the kaleidoscope of fall colors even more magnificent. Soak in this sea of reds, oranges and yellows with a hike to Looking Glass Falls on the North Carolina side of the park or a drive through Cades Cove on the Tennessee side.

No matter which route you choose, be sure you don’t miss the changing fall leaves by checking the Smoky Mountains Fall Foliage Prediction Map before you plan your trip.

TUNNEL OF TREES Michigan

One of Northern Michigan’s not-so-bestkept-secrets, the Tunnel of Trees is a jaw-dropping 20-mile scenic drive following the historic M-119 highway. As its name suggests, in the fall months, you’ll find yourself beneath a leafy ceiling of golds, oranges and crimsons as you drive through its 135 curves along the coastal bluff of Lake Michigan, near Harbor Springs.

At about 45 mph, it will take approximately 40 minutes to go from one end of the Tunnel of Trees to the other. However, if you stop and visit some of the many attractions along the way, it’s easy to spend half a day exploring the area.

130 ICONICLIFE.COM

ASPEN Colorado

Given that this mining town is named for the abundance of aspen trees, it’s no surprise that leaf-peeping is almost considered a sport here. Just 160 miles southwest of Denver, the town is the perfect spot to enjoy fall colors while getting fresh air through various outdoor activities.

Whether you want to explore local hiking trails, take an ATV down scenic roads, kayak the Roaring Fork or Colorado River or get an aerial view by paragliding, you will be immersed in autumn colors painted across a snow-capped mountain backdrop.

THE BERKSHIRES

Massachusetts

If you’re looking for a place to experience fall foliage with a side of charm, the Berkshires, located about 130 miles west of Boston, will check that box. Peak foliage season is mid-October. However, you can start seeing the yellow and orange hues as early as late September. Take in the beauty and enjoy the best view of the vivid hues with a hike on a trail on Mount Greylock, the highest peak in the Berkshires at almost 3,500 feet.

When you’re ready for a break from the outdoors, the Berkshires also feature a deep-rooted food culture and world-class arts and entertainment.

131 ICONICLIFE.COM

JULIAN California

While Southern California isn’t exactly known for its diversity of seasons, this former mining town is. Escape the sandy beaches and palm trees, if only for a day and visit Julian, just an hour outside San Diego.

Volcan Mountain is home to some of the oldest and largest black oaks in San Diego County, and the view is spectacular in fall.

Julian offers prime foliage displays and another favorite fall activity, apple picking. Famous for its apple pie, be sure to stop by Julian Pie Company for an authentic Julian experience.

Journey to ATACAMA,

134 ICONICLIFE.COM

CHILE & BOLIVIA

It's magical to explore where few have been. This journey takes us to uniquely stunning and remote destinations, including luxury lodges recently opened in Bolivia.

Explora Uyuni Lodge, Bolivia 135 ICONICLIFE.COM

SANTIAGO, CHILE

It is best to fly into Santiago, Chile’s capital and largest city. Sites include the Plaza de Armas, the grand heart of the city’s old colonial core with two neoclassical landmarks. In the bohemian Bellavista part of the city, visit Casa Museo La Chascona, the former home of famed poet Pablo Neruda and his wife, Matilde, as portrayed in the 1995 film Il Postino.

Include a visit to The Museum of Memory and Human Rights. It focuses thoughtfully on the human rights violations committed by the Chilean state between 1973 and 1990.

ATACAMA DESERT, CHILE

After leaving Santiago, the first adventure chapter of this journey is the 300-mile travesía (“long journey” or “crossing”) that begins in Atacama, Chile, and takes you to Uyuni, Bolivia.

You will fly from Santiago to Calama (CJC) and take a 1.5-hour drive to the San Pedro de Atacama, the Atacama Desert in the

north of Chile. Atacama is the highest altitude and driest nonpolar desert in the world. There are excellent lodges providing top-notch accommodations, meals, and exceptional guides to help you explore.

Surprisingly, you will see oases burst to life in fertile river valleys and on semi-arid plateaus, as well as the planet’s tallest volcano, highest geysers, oldest mummies and clearest skies. Excursions bring you to explore flamingo-filled lagoons, llama and vicuna-filled plains, multi-hued hot springs, geysers, and panoramas of 6,000-meter-plus peaks.

Thanks to Atacama’s remote location, high altitude, and lack of rain and light pollution, the desert’s night skies are among the darkest and clearest on Earth. As a result, Atacama is one of the best places on the planet for stargazing.

A highlight is a visit to the Tatio geyser field, the third largest geothermal area of its kind in the world, at a staggering height of 14,170 feet above sea level. Here, geysers erupt every minute or so, engulfing all those nearby in thick, warm steam.

TRAVESÍA ATACAMA TO UYUNI

Leaving Atacama, your travesía takes you to western Bolivia, an overland journey through one of the most remote regions of South America, the Altiplano of Bolivia. It is the most extensive area of high plateau outside of Tibet. Here, you will experience surreal landscapes and colors.

At its peak in the 15th century, this travesía was part of a nomadic journey called Qhapaq Ñan, an ancient Incan trail that extends more than 18,600 miles. Today, your travesía will shine a light on the beauty of the region and provide glimpses into the lives and culture of the indigenous Aymara people.

Explora is an exceptional company that pioneered luxury eco-adventure travel in South America. The Explora travesía Atacama to Uyuni route takes travelers from their Explora Atacama lodge in Chile to their two new Explora mountain lodges, Explora Ramaditas (four guest rooms) and Explora Chituca (four guest rooms). Staying at each of these lodges for a night or two en route

137 ICONICLIFE.COM
Explora, Explora Atacama

to Explora Uyuni Lodge is ideal. It divides up the driving time and allows for wonderful exploration. Sites include Colorada Lagoon, Turquiri Lagoon, Pescado Island and Gruta de Las Galaxias caves. Your last stop on the travesía is the Uyuni Salt Flat, and the Explora Uyuni (6 guest rooms) is perched ideally on a cliff with stunning views of the salt flat.

As of March 2023, Explora Ramaditas, Explora Chituca and Explora Uyuni lodges began welcoming guests, and they are the No. 1 luxury choice here. Remote, isolated and surrounded by nature, Explora Ramaditas, Chituca and Uyuni are your sublime luxury sanctuaries. For me, after exploring by day, it was magical to be cozy and relaxed in my room made of natural, beautiful materials with a fantastic king-size bed, sumptuous sheets, blankets and duvet looking out onto breathtaking nature. I enjoyed perfect heating, a hot shower, excellent service, expert guides and fine cuisine.

After staying at Explora Uyuni, a fun option for a night is to stay on the salt flat in an Airstream trailer with comfortable, simple interiors and step out onto the salt. As an alternative to the overland travesía and with a focus on visiting the Uyuni Salt Flat, there are easy, non-stop one-hour flights between Uyuni and La Paz, Bolivia.

BOLIVIA’S UYUNI SALT FLAT

Upon reaching Bolivia’s Uyuni Salt Flat, you will be surrounded by one of the most remarkable landscapes in the world. It is a vista of white salt that extends to the horizon, covered by quilted, polygonal salt patterns and some magical rock formations. The salt is white and seemingly endless, with no roads and few signs of man. It is more than 4,000 square miles, which is about the size of Jamaica. The salt crust ranges from 9 to 30 feet thick, amounting to about 10 billion tons of salt. It was created by the evaporation of prehistoric lakes. Then, salt deposits leached from the surrounding mountains and, with no outlet to the sea, were deposited here, the lowest point on the Altiplano plateau. It is tranquil and mesmerizing.

POTOSÍ AND SUCRE, BOLIVIA

The next chapter of your adventure takes you on a journey to discover some of the wonders and history of Bolivia. From Uyuni, travel overland with an expert guide for a long, pleasant day trip to Potosí, ending in Sucre, Bolivia. Potosí became an imperial city in 1572 and prospered following the discovery of its silver mines. Sucre is the capital of Bolivia. The Spanish founded it in the first half of the 16th century, and it has many well-preserved 16th-century buildings.

FASHION FORCE

In the realm of high fashion, where elegance and opulence converge, few brands captivate our attention like the ICONIC Louis Vuitton. Renowned for its timeless designs and exquisite craftsmanship, the brand has joined forces with the maestro of music and style, Pharrell Williams, to create a collection that harmonizes luxury and creativity like never before.

Combining Williams’ boundless creativity with the unmatched artistry of Louis Vuitton, this collaboration is a crescendo of luxury that caters to the most astute fashion connoisseurs.

In his approach to designing this collection, Williams focuses not on philosophical musings or extensive research but on understanding the customer—himself. He sees himself as not the creative director but the client, embodying the essence of the Louis Vuitton consumer.

Drawing inspiration from his own style, Williams showcases a collection that reflects his penchant for blending streetwear, luxury, skate culture and precise tailoring. The group is divided into five distinct pillars, each catering to a specific occasion, to achieve this combination of personal style and the diverse wardrobe needs of Louis Vuitton’s esteemed clientele.

The Dandy offers formal wear for special occasions; Comfort provides effortless elegance for everyday activities; Resort embodies the spirit of vacationing; Sport caters to physical activities; and Core Staples presents timeless pieces Williams will reinvent each season.

With his signature playfulness, Williams also reimagined “LV” as “LVovers,” a clever nod to his home state’s slogan, “Virginia Is for Lovers.” This innovative twist captures the collection’s essence, inviting wearers to embrace a love for life, exquisite details and exciting adventures.

Standout pieces include the redesigned varsity jacket embellished with rhinestones and a Louis Vuitton script logo. The fusion of camouflage and the ICONIC Damier pattern creates a new print, “Damoflage,” adorning denim, knits, fur and tailoring. Each garment exudes a sense of individuality, staying true to Pharrell’s distinctive identity while remaining timeless and elegant.

With its playful spirit and irreverent charm, this collection invites you to celebrate your individuality and embrace the power of self-expression. Step into the limelight and let your style conduct a symphony of sophistication that resonates with your unique personality.
