FONDAZIONE LUIGI ROVATI

250 works of art spread over two storeys take visitors from the age of the Etruscans to the contemporary art scene, constantly making connections between the two. This is the brand-new Fondazione Rovati, opened last autumn. The exhibition begins downstairs in the Hypogeum, where large earthenware vessels, ex votos, antifixes and small Etruscan bronzes are displayed alongside contemporary works by William Kentridge, Lucio Fontana and Arturo Martini. Next is the great oval room, in which the items on show speak of the Etruscans’ daily life: home, workshop, the sea. A separate space houses the Cercare il bello section: small glass cubes contain jewels, Etruscan necklaces and precious objects, including a gold-plated bronze head of a

woman by Alberto Giacome i. In the centre of the room, the largest display case houses the symbol of the museum, the Cernuschi Warrior, a sophisticated and expressive Etruscan votive bronze. On the Piano Nobile the dialogue between archaeology and contemporary art becomes more intense, presenting the visitor with ideas and emotions both visual and conceptual. Two large spaces are reserved for temporary exhibitions.

LIVING MILAN

The best ways to get around the city

Adynamic and extravagant city, full of surprises. That is Milan, with its many things to see and do. A city that is always on the move and almost never sleeps. People’s lifestyle is frenetic and moving quickly becomes a necessity both for the residents and for those who visit it for the first time. First of all, forget your car; it is better to use its practical and efficient public transport system. Any part of the city can be easily reached by the metro, bus or the tram, and if that is not enough, you can take advantage of the car or bike sharing services. If instead you prefer

exploring any corner of the historic centre, just wear comfortable shoes. Let us look together at the best ways to enjoy this city of a thousand opportunities.

Take the metro if you want to reach all the main locations in the city easily and quickly. There are 4 tram lines in Milan, M1 red, M2

green, M3 yellow and M5 violet, starting from early morning until a er midnight. If you are planning to get around a lot, we recommend buying a day travelcard at the cost of 7 euros, or you can purchase the Milan Pass which also includes free use of public transport. Milan’s bus system consists of 80 bus lines and 4 trolleybus lines. Very convenient for short routes but it is be er to avoid it at peak times. The Milan pass also includes the tourist bus, the best choice for those who do not know the city and want to discover it on a tour first, especially if you are on holiday with

CONCIERGE TIPS

Milan is a bustling city where everything happens at its own pace, with different worlds and stories that create a unique atmosphere of everyday life. The best way to experience it is to explore it on foot. Beautiful places such as the Monumental Cemetery or City Life can be easily reached on foot in 30 minutes from the Duomo. As you walk, you can enjoy people watching, discover their favourite places, see where locals go to drink coffee or to shop. Also, you can spend some time in the area near the Teatro dal Verme surrounded by beautiful buildings which recall the glories of past centuries, and admire the Castello Sforzesco with its large park.

your li le ones. There is also a well- developed tram network in the city, active since 1876 which currently has 17 lines, starting from early morning until late at night. Lately, a number of historic trams dating back to more than 80 years ago have also been put back into operation. Riding on one of these vintage trams is really a unique and unmissable experience, and it will give you the opportunity to enjoy the whole city from your window. Milan was also one of the first cities in Italy to launch a car sharing service; it also allows access to LTZ areas in the B and C zones and free parking in yellow and blue parking spaces. If you want to explore the historic centre at your own pace and fully enjoy the city’s frenetic charm, we recommend visiting it on foot. Alternatively, you can take advantage of the convenient BikeMi service, the city’s

CAR SHARING

AND BIKE SHARING

bike sharing network with a fleet of 5,430 bicycles (you can choose between traditional or electric bikes, also with child seat), or rent an electric kick scooter. In this case, remember to pay a ention to speed and always wear the mandatory helmet. Sustainable mobility is increasingly becoming people’s favourite means of transport, especially in a large city such as Milan. Ecological, convenient, it promotes physical activity and reduces traffic. Using a car, however, could be the best way to visit the surrounding areas and villages, but to reach large cities such as Bergamo or Brescia you can also take advantage of the convenient regional trains departing from the city’s main stations. Finally, you can also take a taxi. You can hail one in the street, go to a taxi rank or book it in advance by phone using the Radiotaxi service.

SOPHISTICATED TREATMENTS SPACES FULL OF CHARM, AND AVANT-GARDE PRODUCTS

Whether its during Salone del Mobile, the various Fashion Weeks or all year round, the frantic pace of daily life in Milan means wellness breaks in luxury 5-star hotels’ Urban Spas are increasingly popular. Oases of Zen calm, digital detox and pure relaxation even for just a few hours.

Milan is not only the capital of fashion and business, but also of beauty and wellness, thanks to unparalleled services and se ings.

Those who prefer places where Milanese tradition encounters the charm of an oriental welcome make a reservation at the Mandarin Oriental Spa, with treatment rooms dedicated to the four natural elements - water, fire, earth and wood - including two suites for couples and one for Thai massages - that offer Es-

sential Traveller rituals designed to re-harmonize the body’s natural flow and re-set the body clock. At the Excelsior Hotel Gallia’s Shiseido Spa, where the names of treatment rooms evoke eastern images, you can experience ‘Omotenashi’, the Japanese culture of hospitality and care for guests, in treatments such as the Timeless Ritual which includes a combination of a personalized facial treatment and a relaxing back, shoulder, arm, hand and scalp massage.

The beautiful roo op pool features glass and steel diamond-shaped skylights. Swimming or just relaxing with a panoramic view of the city is an increasingly popular trend.

It is also offered by the Club 10 Fitness & Beauty Center on the penthouse floor of the historic Hotel

Principe di Savoia, with a 60 sq.m. pool, the biggest of all Milan’s spas.

Anti-stress and ideal to combat the effects of pollution is the Sublime Skin Face, perhaps combined with the deeply relaxing aromatherapic Tranquillity Massage, which promotes sleep and reduces jet-leg effects.

As well as swimming in a pool that recalls La Mamounia in Marrakesh, at the Grand Spa & Valmont, Palazzo Parigi you can also enjoy a sensorial journey around the world provided by the Royal Hammam Privé and seven thematic treatment rooms inspired by Bali, India, China, Sweden, Morocco and Polynesia. Equally sophisticated but much more minimal, in line with the style of ‘King Giorgio’, is the Armani/ SPA on the eighth floor of the Hotel of the same name. Just as elegant in

Here the anti-stress par excellence is Libertà body massage, a deep-acting treatment that, thanks to the combination of specific deep tissue techniques and acupressure, relieves tensions and

frees movements, while the Bois body oil coaxes muscles into releasing tensions, leaving a so and supple skin.

Equally luxurious are the rituals at Spiga8 Spa in the Baglioni Hotel Carlton, where to discover the products of Natura Bissé, internationally renowned brand, used in a variety of treatments to target the needs of all the guests.

Then there are those who prefer literal ‘sanctuaries’ of wellness in hotels with the charm of ancient convents. Such as the Four Seasons Hotel Milano, built in the 15th

century and set around a tranquil cloistered courtyard, the former cellars house the spa designed by Spanish architect Patricia Urquiola and featuring frescoes, columns and vaulted ceilings.

The Bulgari Hotel Milano was also a convent, the home of the Sisters of the Cenacle to be exact.

In the Spa, where daylight filters through the glass walls and illuminates the pure gold tiles of the pool, you can unwind relying on the Augustinus Bader’s award-winning approach. Milan’s vibrant energy can wait for a few hours.

PORTOFINO MON AMOUR

A winter day in a delightful town

Picture postcards of the Ligurian Riviera, the truer and more authentic Italian version of the Côte d’Azur, with colourful li le houses overlooking the port and locals who still have the frank openness of seafaring populations. Portofino, the most elegant of the towns sca ered along the coastline, and the scene of celebrated love stories - including the passionate affair between Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor - is beautiful in winter too, when the shu ers are down and the wind blows from the sea. As we hear from Luca Chiesa, Head Concierge at the Splendido, a Belmond Hotel in the hills behind the town and the Splendido Mare in the Piazze a - our guide for this winter excursion, land is preferable to sea in the colder months. So, starting at the Piazze a, we can walk towards Castello

Brown, set in its gorgeous mediterranean gardens, where we can admire exhibitions by illustrious visitors to the town in rooms still boasting their original furnishings. Or take the lovely walk from the town to the picturesque lighthouse: some 30 minutes uphill but rewarded with unparalleled sea views. On our way to the lighthouse we pass the church of San Giorgio, home to the

relics of St George, patron of Portofino, which were brought here by local sailors on their return from the Crusades. A er a Bellini at the classic Bar Morena, it’s time for lunch. Until the town’s many restaurants and hotels reopen in Marchincluding the wonderful and completely refurbished Splendido Mare and its restaurant DaV Mare (although for the long-established Splendido in the hills, with its iconic La Terrazza restaurant and new Pool Grill, we have to wait until June, as it’s currently being restored) - in winter the choice is between da I Gemelli and Ö Magazin, overlooking the port. From late February onwards, don’t miss the unbeatable scampi at Ö Batti, just behind the Piazze a. Then a visit to the celebrated seafront boutiques La vela and L’Ancora, and we head for home as the sunsets.

INSTAGRAMMABLE LOCATIONS

PALAZZO INA

There are many entrances with a recognisable appearance scattered throughout Milan, all designed by some of the most famous architects of the 20th century. But the most instagrammed? The entrance hall of Palazzo Ina by modernist architect Piero Bottoni, who also designed Monte Stella and Qt8. An atrium with Palladian Carrara marble flooring, while the walls are covered with powder pink and cobalt blue tiles: a perfect mix for Instagram.

VIA LINCOLN

Low-rise houses, pastel shades, small balconies and flower gardens. The houses in Via Lincoln, a former working-class district now known as the Rainbow district are all painted in different colours. Some even gave it the nickname of Milanese Burano, and it is a sought-after place by those who, in addition to the monuments, want to discover the city’s secret and unusual places.

FONDAZIONE PRADA

The architecture of the museum offers a varied choice of views and panoramas to take a good photo. For example, the Upside Down Mushroom Room: a dreamlike installation by Carsten Höller that enriches the Atlas, the permanent collection of the Fondazione Prada, and attracts the curiosity of many visitors. But also the Bar Luce, designed by film director Wes Anderson: pastel tones, jukebox, pinball machines and a refined vintage atmosphere to feel like being in a film while sipping a cup of coffee.

If your’s looking to snap some amazing pics in Milan, be sure to check out these colourful spots!

THE COURTYARD OF CASA ROSSI

This building is a great example of eclectic architecture. It was built by Giuseppe Pestagalli in the 1860s and features a Neo-Renaissance façade on the outside. If you stand in the middle of the courtyard open to the public and you look up, you will see how its structure frames a portion of the blue sky in a perfect octagon.

Corso Magenta, 12

ARTLINE

Eggs that stretch out towards the sky, a gigantic hand, and stars on the square floor. These are just three of the art installations found at Artline, the park in the shadow of the skyscrapers of the City Life district, that is enriched every year with new installations. A new life for the old headquarters of the army in Piazza delle Armi, that was used for military exercises until 1923.

Piazza Elsa Morante

VICOLO DEI LAVANDAI

Located along the Navigli, Vicolo dei Lavandai offers a picturesque view of the old Milan. You can see the stream, the canopy still supported by small wooden beams and the old lavoir. The people who came here in the past to wash their clothes were not women, but men, members of a trade association active in Milan since the 18th century.

BAM LA BIBLIOTECA DEGLI ALBERI

A contemporary botanical garden located among the skyscrapers of Porta Nuova with paths that merge with each other forming geometrical patterns, circular forests and flower gardens. The Biblioteca degli Alberi is one of the most representative parks of the new Milan, greener and more sustainable, where you can spend time among nature and attend artistic and cultural events.

BOSCO VERTICALE

The green skyscraper overlooks the BAM - Biblioteca degli Alberi between the districts of Porta Nuova and Isola. It is one of the first examples of a building with a new style architecture based on biodiversity, which pays attention to the relationship between man and other living species. The façade changes its appearance every season: full of flowers in spring, bright green in summer, and with the warm colours of the foliage in autumn.

QUARTIERE ORTICA

An open-air museum, open to the public, free of charge. It is OR.ME Ortica Memoria: 20 works of urban art among the largest in Italy, made by the collective of artists known as OrticaNoodles. Each different mural tells a story about Milan of the 20th century, a route that invites both the Milanese and tourists to leave the city centre to discover a different part of our city.
