THIS IS MY COLUMN

Not True Blue Jet Blue

When I sat down to write this column, I had something entirely different in mind. But then a dispute with Jet Blue Airlines occurred, and I need a place to vent – and what better place than my 10 or 20 thousand friends who read Good Times Magazine. Besides, I'm tired of the pandemic, how bad things are, insurrections; here's an issue I'm sure many of you can relate to:. Let me set the record straight: As a Delta Frequent Flyer, I accumulated more than 400,000 miles over the years – but when Jet Blue came on the scene, I switched; it offered better seating, free TV at you seat, and much more. I had considered Delta to be my airline. In August 2020 in the middle of the height of the pandemic (when no sensible person was thinking about flying, and flights were departing carrying just a handful of flyers), Jet Blue ran an offer I couldn't refuse. This was the mother of all sales, featuring prices I had never seen before or would again.

On impulse, I booked two round trip tickets to Savannah for Jan 22 – my mother's birthday, five years from when she passed. I lived and had a paper in Savannah, Georgia, so even though it would be the middle of winter, I went ahead and booked the trip and paid for the tickets. On November 23, I received an email from Jet Blue that stated: “We have made some changes to our schedule resulting in the CANCELLATION of your upcoming trip.” Not my flight, but my trip. Also: A click here to “request a CREDIT or REFUND to your original form of payment.” These were the only options. There was nothing mentioned about rebooking the flight. I did nothing, since neither option was particularly attractive. With the pandemic raging, it was the least of my problems. After all, the trip had been canceled, by Jet Blue. On January 19, I received the same email, again informing me about the cancellation of my trip. Strangely, I received a second

email from Jet Blue that referred to “preparing for your forthcoming trip.” I tried to call them to find out what was going on, figuring it was simply a computer glitch. After being told there was a 25-minute wait time to talk to a customer service rep, I gave up. However, as I write them on January 21, I received another email from them asking me to go through seat selection for my upcoming flight, which they said was taking place January 22. I went into my True Blue account, and it showed that they had canceled my original flight – but without any kind of notification from the airline, it had booked us on a new flight that was only 15 minutes different from the original. I tried to call Jet Blue and was on put hold for 21 minutes, and eventually spoke to a customer rep who said she couldn't figure out what had happened, but it appeared that they had booked me onto a new flight without asking or telling me. Clearly, this was not doable. I asked for a supervisor, and after another 15 minute hold, was, by the luck of the draw, given to Rafael. If there was ever someone who did not understand the meaning of customer service, it was Rafael. He read me the official rules and regulations, and yes, it did show Jet Blue had canceled my January 22 flight in November, but he maintained that “I should have known to call Jet Blue to rebook.” I pointed out that both letters only gave two options and that rebooking was not one of them, and he replied that I should have known this. And, because it was within 24 hours of the flight, I couldn't rebook, and only receive a refund or credit. Being the diplomat that I am, I suggested that Jet Blue should be willing to do more for a 20year loyal customer, especially since this was a special occasion; we had booked the flight

when no one was booking flights, and all we wanted to do was exchange these tickets for future tickets to the same location. He told us rather strongly this couldn't be done, and if it could, we would have to pay the difference between these super sale tickets and the price at the time of the re-booked flight. Kick my butt and call me dumb, but does this sound like a wise solution for an irate loyal customer? I said I would never fly Jet Blue again (which I won't), that we had been tremendously inconvenienced both by the alleged cancellation and also by the apparent re-booking without notifying us. Rafael hunkered down, repeated his robo-like answer. I threatened to go to small claims court; Rafael hunkered even more, figured it was no skin off his backside, we were never going to be flight partners. I asked, on three separate occasions, for the names of the head of customer relations and a corporate officer so I could write them a letter. He refused each time. “So you're refusing to give me the names of anyone I can contact?” I asked. “You've escalated it as far as you can, “ he answered. “Is there any other way I can offer you excellent service?” Just kidding, his remarks were quite different. Wow. I feel betrayed. Jet Blue was my airline; I touted it to friends and business associates when it first started; I bought from them when no sane person was willing to commit to flying. To those at Jet Blue, this is one of those times when you need to step up, big time. What they are going to lose is a lot more than the cost of swapping out two tickets for seats on a half-empty plane. Have a Jet Blue tale of woe? I'm all ears. Email me at gtmag@optonline.net. The best answer gets to be put on hold for an hour.

BOUNTIFUL GOURMET: Best of 2020

FOGO DE CHAO

Best of 2020 almost sounds like an oxymoron considering everything that happened this past year. But, man can not live by politics alone, so we have made a vain attempt to highlight some of our favorites. Join in and let's us know places you liked the best. Barbecue will always head the list. Dang BBQ in Seaford, Hauppauge, and Islip serves up mountain sized portions of great grub. Their brisket is good, pulled pork excellent, and you can't beat them for their innovative shakes. Their aporkalypse now burrito is the size of a football.

A newcomer to Long Island, but not to bbq lovers, is Mighty Quinn's, making their foray into Long Island from Manhattan, with a new location on Franklin Avenue in Garden City. Their brisket is fork tender, the pulled pork and ribs are outstanding, and for those hungry eaters, don't miss out on their Flintstone sized beef rib. They also offer a nice variety of sides and the best part is they're not charging Manhattan prices for these treats. Bobo's Kitchen is gone but not forgotten for Chinese takeout, but TJ's in Williston Park offers up an excellent selection of Chinese favorites at very reasonable prices. Our favorites include sesame chicken, General Tso's chicken, chicken and broccoli, their dumplings, lo mein and most items we've tried. Very quick turnaround. In a twist, they also offer some Mexican items including a decent beef taco. Who doesn't like cheesesteaks? Chiddys in Farmingdale has to be at the top of everyone's list with a very inventive list of cheeseteaks and other great takeout items. They're as close to Philly as we've seen so far, but wait. The very famous Tony Luke's of Philadelphia is opening its first location on Long Island with a forthcoming spot in Carle

Place(four blocks from the Good Times office). Tony Luke's is world famous and he is known for his duels with Bobby Flay. They're shooting for a late Spring opening. Everybody loves ice cream and one of our newest finds is Sweet Sensation in Babylon Village. Their homemade ice creams are well known to the locals, and they have an interesting selection of milkshakes, slushies and much more. Cones are big scoops, and the richness drips down. Italian favorites are all over the place...prob-

ably our big favorite is Spuntino, with locations in Williston Park, Dix Hills and St. James. They have great pasta specials on Mondays and Tuesdays, with nearly thirty combinations. A sure winner is their rigatoni with red sauce, meatballs and sausage. Huge, and it comes with salad, dessert, and an excellent bread basket. And, they have the best garlic knots on Long Island. Other favorites would have to include Villa Milano in Manhasset, Mama's in Copiague(try their Thai chili chicken pizza, short rib, rigatoni carbonara) or just about anything else. Vincent's Clam Bar in Carle

SWEET SENSATIONS

Place and Baci's in Westbury offer superior décor, great service, monstrous chicken parm, and just about everything else top notch. For Brazilian food you have to check out Fogo de Chao in Carle Place. Their endless meat dishes are exquisite, service is top notch, atmosphere is perfect, and they have a

Market Table which is unmatched with variety of items. For bakery we have to go with St. Rocco's in Glen Cove for just about anything. Superior cakes, croissants, cookies, Italian pastries. Another top flight place is Sea Cliff Bagel Cafe, where a C.I.A. trained chef turns out dozens of great bakery items each day, almost all made in house. I'm going to skip burgers here, because they are too numerous to mention. Where do you go for your food fix? We'd like to know. Good Food Is Forever: A good deli can be a real blessing for any Long Island neighborhood. It was a stroke of luck that brought us to Eternal Deli at 383 Hillside Avenue in Williston Park (call them at (516) 248-0821), a great lunch, snack, or dinner spot in an area where there really isn't a whole lot else to choose from. What a find Eternal Deli is: A shockingly vast menu featuring sandwiches, salads, prepared hot foods, cold beer and soda, traditional breakfast favorites, a “dieter's menu,” burgers (shockingly outstanding), wraps, paninis, platters, char-broiled specialties (gyros, burgers, and chicken), grab-and-go chips and snacks, a variety of homemade sides (including potato chips that are incredible), and more delectable treats can we can list here. Thus far, we've had a roast beef hero that was well beyond succulent, and a hamburger that was so far beyond expectations that it can't be calculated – a far cry from the jejune fast food fare that dots the Williston Park/Mineola area. Forgive us, but we can't help but use this wording: Try one sandwich at Eternal Deli and you'll remember it forever. The place is just perfect for the grab-and-go lifestyle that so many of us are living with during this period. Eternal Deli hours are daily from 6:30 am to 4 pm; closed Sundays. Delivery is also available, as is catering – we think this would be a great bet for big game Sundays. Wings Are The Thing: Yes, Virginia, there really is a National Chicken Council, and it recently reported than on Super Bowl weekend Americans will devour a record 1.42 billion wings while watching the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers battle for the Lombardi Trophy. This figure is up two percent from last year, according to the National Chicken Council's annual Wing Report. There are several reasons for the uptick, said National Chicken Council spokesman Tom Super: "If you think about it, restaurants like wing joints and pizza places were built around takeout and delivery, so they didn't have to change their business model that much during the pandemic. Wings travel well and hold up during delivery conditions. Plus, they align with consumer desire for comfort food during the pandemic. Chicken production remained steady in 2020, and as long as people are sitting around watching TV and maybe drinking a beer, wings will remain in the game. Don't forget the air fryer revolution, either." PR Newsfoto/ National Chicken Council

FOODS WE DISCOVERED DURING OUR EXILE

With Good Times shut down for seven months, we had plenty of time to make new discoveries. After drooling over recipes in Southern Living, we thought it was time to challenge our tastebuds to new adventures. Richie offered tofu and sushi as new directions - but you can't teach an old dog new tricks it seems. First up, the best hot dogs we've ever eaten. That previous honor was held by Grote & Weigel in Connecticut, but Feltman's Hot Dogs not only have spectacular taste, but a great story. It turns out that Charles Feltman claimed to be an inventor of the hot dog in 1867, and he opened a hot dog palace in, where else?, Coney Island. He had a helper named Nathan Handwerker, and the rest is hot dog history. Handwerker left Feltman's to open his rival place and undercut his old boss by charging only 5 cents a hot dog. The original Feltman's closed in 1954 but Feltman's was resurrected in the early part of the 21st century by two brothers, Michael & Joe Quinn. The Feltman's Hot Dog is smoked for 3 hours in a smokehouse next to bacon, giving it that smoky flavor. It has a crisp snap to it, and each dog is a big boy, weighing in at a respectable 16 ounces. The taste is indescribable..pure ectasy. They also have a good mustard. Contact them at

And their packages hold a decent amount of these goodies. I guarantee you won't be able to put these babies down. They can be ordered from pearssnacks.com Do you want truly decadent chocolate chip cookies? Boy, do we have the place for you. We discovered Wunderkeks Cookies online, and were taken in by the incredible graphic of a man-devouring chocolate chip cookie stack. Interesting story: They are based in Austin, Texas where my son lives. The founder escaped from the violence of Central America, emigrated to the U.S., and founded this incredible cookie company. Using my powers of persuasion, I convinced my son to buy me a dozen mail order, even though they are not part of the Keto diet. The cookies are mind boggling. SPORTS BEAT One of the best things to occur during this new year was the ending of another dismal New York Jets season. As has become a common tale for this woebegone NFL franchise, the Jets had to conduct another bi-annual search for another head coach after giving Adam Gase the muchdeserved ax. Former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh will succeed Gase. Unfortunately for Jets fans, the team couldn’t even be the best at losing, as The Jacksonville Jaguars were even more pitiful. Thanks to their ineptitude, the Jags won the grand prize: The top pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, which will surely be can’t-miss QB Trevor Lawrence. This leaves the Jets with the second pick, which should not be wasted on lesser pass throwers Zach Wilson or Justin Fields. The Jets might as well keep Sam Darnold as their quarterback and select a beefy offensive lineman who can prevent

That’s a shame, because Schwartz has been with SNY since its inception in 2006. To his credit, Schwartz has never insulted the intelligence of his viewers by sugarcoating poor performanced or engaging in airtime-killing devices as engaging in debates on stupid topics such as “Michael Jordan versus LeBron James,” which has become

Hopefully, YES executives will allow Isola to use his quick wit the way Nets play-by-play man Ian Eagle does. The Nets made their first appearance in years on an ABC Christmas afternoon game when they handily beat the Boston Celtics. The addition of NBA superstars Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and now James Harden have added luster to the Nets, and have made them appealing to ABC, ESPN, and TNT; the networks that have rights to televise pro hoops nationally. The Nets did suffer a blow when guard Spencer Dinwiddie, the glue of the team for the past four years, will probably miss the remainder of the 2020/21 season with a torn ACL in his right knee. The good news for Nets fans is if Dinwiddie had been healthy, he almost certainly would have been included in the blockbuster deal which sent Caris LeVert (now, unfortunately, out of

In November, it aired “Wild Card: Downfall Of A Radio Loudmouth” about WFAN drivetime air personality Craig Carton. Just before Christmas, HBO debuted “Under The Grapefruit Tree,” the life story of recently retired New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia. Unlike past HBO docs where actor Liev Schreiber served as narrator, Sabathia himself serves as the guide through his life. What is most surprising about Under The Grapefruit Tree is Sabathia detailing his harrowing battle with alcoholism and how he was able to keep his drinking issues a secret from both his teammates and the New York media. The program is not always easy to watch, as Sabathia discusses his fondness for Hennessy and the decline in his pitching abilities as age took its inevitable toll, but the program is nevertheless compelling. “Bronx Bombers” fans will enjoy the latest book from New York Post scribe and North Babylon native Peter Botte, New York Yankees: The Big 50 (Triumph Books). The author devotes chapters to legendary Yankees players, managers, and executives,

New York Mets fans will definitely love reading David Russell’s Fabulous To Futile In Flushing (Summer Game Press), the best historical treatise on the Amazin’s I have ever read. Russell devotes four to five pages on every year in Mets history from 1962 to 2019, with emphasis not just on games played during those years, but also on the various trades and hirings and firings that took place. It’s fun to see the names of such obscure Mets as Mike Bruhert, Willie Harris, Hank Webb, Rich Folkers, and so many more. New York Mets owner Steven Cohen has scored points with fans for his Tweets. Anticipating the blowback he’d get from fans for not trading prospects to acquire pitcher Blake Snell from the Tampa Bay Rays, Cohen tweeted “News flash: The Mets farm system needs to be replenished.” Cohen was rightfully taking a shot the general manager he fired as soon as he bought the team from the Wilpons, Brodie Van Wagenen, who was fond of trading top prospects for meager returns.

DEMOLITION Mike Manne & Tiger Blues Blues Comes To Junior High Mr. Blues & I Songs from Rock Guitar Super Session Blues Artist Records Who: One of the area's most prolific blues guitarists – Mike Manne, who fronts the hardhitting Tiger Blues – has been the subject of a host of digital re-releases in recent months. His popular CD albums Blues Come To Junior High, Mr. Blues & I, Blues 345 (Live & Burning), and the songs “Makin' Love,” “More Makin' Love,” “Moving On,” “Walker,” “Armed And Ready,” and “Final Frontier,” all from his early Rock Guitar Super Session album, are now available via the popular music streaming site BandCamp. Blues 345 is a compilation album of concert recordings recorded from performances from different stage shows, and features bonus tracks from previous recordings. The uniquely named Blues Comes To Junior High is based on what the band considers to be a legendary show at Longwood Junior High School in Middle Island. On this album, the songs included are the

The Mr. Blues And I album features other Manne favorites, including “Mister Magic,” “All Your Love,” “I Cant Stop,” “Come Back Baby,” and “Custom Built Woman.” All in all, these albums and songs serve as a worthy primer for a guitarist who has forged a legacy in this area. The artists have gained much recognition for their work while playing at venues and outdoor events both large and small. This new album follows the duo's previous recorded work, Topless On The Reservation, and it's pretty much what the act's name implies:

Touches of folk, blues, and Americana abound. You'll hear Kozak's expert violin playing and singing as well as Marocchi's prowess on guitar and vocals, but there's much more than that going on here: This earthy, soulful music is quite rare for these parts, a welcome respite from our current troubles with heartfelt sounds that are easy to get lost in. RHYTHM TRACKING

With Jimi LaLumia

Forever A Doll: Sylvain Sylvain, the rhythm guitarist of The New York Dolls, died on Erika Harding Sylvain January 13 after a Sylvain long battle with cancer. The only remaining original member of the original Dolls still with us is frontman and vocalist David Johansen, who continues to perform in his alternate identity of Buster Poindexter. The online world turned out in force upon news of Syl's death. I kept in touch with Sylvain through the last several years, and was deeply saddened when the final news hit. Syl was the driving force and unifier for the Dolls from 1972 onward. The legendary battles between Johansen and Dolls guitarist Johnny Thunders are the stuff of punk rock legend, but Syl was frequentlythe bridge over troubled waters, until that bridge finally gave way. Syl eventually got a solo record deal with RCA in the late 1970s, and delivered some truly wonderful recordings that were totally ignored by a Dolls-phobic music press as well as the stuffy nose-inthe-air FM rock stations who treated rock music with the attendant nonsense usually reserved for classical music. Decades later, David and Syl recorded and performed under the Dolls banner, with new material that was again ignored. The ultimate insult was and continues to be the exclusion of this band from The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame – despite the fact that The New York Dolls were the birthing force that delivered glam and punk to the music world. Many of the acts that they influenced are honored there, but The Dolls still are not. It's an unjust world in so many matters such as this one, but Syl is free now from pain and frustration. God bless him for the gifts he gave us.

JAZZ & BLUES The Blues Gets Randy: East Texas-born Randy McAllister will release his new album Paperbag Salvation on April 23 on Reaction Records. Now based in Hermosa, South Dakota, McAllister performs blues and roots in his own original style. Plays driving drums and harmonia, McAllister writes songs and sings in a powerfully soul-drenched voice. Paperbag Salvation showcases McAllister’s singing, songwriting, and performing skills on 10 original songs that highlight his band: Brandon Hudspeth, guitar on all tracks; Howard Mahan, guitar on track two; Paul Greenlease, bass; Adam Hagerman, drums; and Heather Newman, background Randy vocals. McAllister McAllister has a knack for keen wordplay in both his songs and their titles, and he shared his thoughts on several of them from the new album. “‘You're Like Mashed Potatoes’ was based on building around that line with the sentiment of how a kid might say how much he loves something. “‘Most Irritating Person in the World’ was also originally just based on a line that I thought would be funny to do something with,” continued McAllister. “Then I had a day where someone was asking me questions and then talking over me when I would answer, all the while I was backing up because they were so close they were spitting on me. The more I backed up the closer they got. I also had someone park their car so close to my driver’s side door that I had to get through the passenger side. Seemed like a good day to start writing. ‘I take one step back, you take two steps up, I'm trying to make some space but you won't let me get enough,’ I sing in that song.” Dulcie's Tones: Mesa/Bluemoon Recordings has announced a March 12 release date for Rediscovered, the new six-song EP from singer/songwriter Dulcie Taylor. This remixing, remastering (and sometimes new recording) on tracks during the artist's 20-year career stint with the Dulcie label brings to mind Taylor her musical journey. A showcase for Taylor’s eocals, Rediscovered is the follow-up to the Reimagined EP released last year. Taylor says in explaining the new disc’s genesis: “I find that whenever we’re recording, there are often different paths one can go down at different points in the process. You may like all the paths but mostly you just choose one. It was so much fun (always a good thing) to go back and revisit these tracks and make some new moves with the spirit of the songs in mind. And it’s like time travel – when we’d bring up a track, it put me right back in the studio where the song was cut with the musicians who played on it. It’s very inspiring to create fresh ideas.” Misty McAllister

Danielle Durack: New Single Is All ‘Heart’

Phoenix-based Danielle Durack has issued a video for her new single, “There Goes My Heart,” from her new album, No Place. An aching ballad with a “crying-over-the-piano kind of conception,” the song is the centerpiece of Durack’s heartbreak album: “When I wrote this song, I was at a point where every day felt like a mountain to climb,” she said. “Little movements like getting out of bed, making food, social interactions, and other very ordinary things were laborious activities. I wanted to visually encapsulate that feeling of a broken heart and what it looks like in an everyday context.” Much like the entirety of No Place, Durack says “There Goes My Heart” is “full of raw, unrelenting pain but a clarity of purpose and a clear view of the light at the end of the tunnel.”

DEAR PRESIDENT BIDEN AND VICE-PRESIDENT HARRIS, 50 Million Americans are experiencing food insecurity as you begin your historic tenure in the White House. Too many children, seniors, veterans, homeless, and families are struggling to put nutritious food on their tables. The United States needs to address this problem as we did in 1978-1980, when former President Jimmy Carter established a Presidential Commission on Hunger and Malnutrition, and appointed Harry Chapin to serve on the Commission. As the Biden-Harris Administration begins the task of responding to COVID-19, getting our economy back on track, systemic racism, and now, an insurrection and domestic terrorism, we encourage you and our representatives in Congress to also focus on hunger and food insecurity by convening a 2021 Presidential Commission on Food Insecurity because no American should go hungry.
