THEATER Opioid addiction, date rape, racism, gender fluidity, teenage angst, and porn addiction – what hot-button issue doesn’t the Diablo Cody (Juno) cram into her book for Jagged Little Pill, the highoctane, exhilarating, and surprisingly moving musical taking Broadway by storm? Utilizing the songs from Alanis Morissette’s 1995 hit album (with additional Morissette-Glenn Ballard songs and two new numbers), Cody, following the template of Next To Normal and Dear Evan Hansen, fashions an original tale of contemporary family dysfunction and adolescent angst. Belying the cheery family Christmas card that opens the show, pill-popping mother Mary Jane (the moving Elizabeth Stanley) has become dependent on pain killers after a car accident; her well-meaning husband Steve (the surprisingly sympathetic Sean Allan Krill), a workaholic lawyer, has become addicted to internet porn to compensate for his sexless marriage; their over-achieving son (Derek Klena) isn’t sure he wants to go

Whew! Yet, because of Tony-winning director Diane Paulus’s (Pippin, Hair) high energy (sometimes overly frenetic) staging; Sidi Larbi Chaerkaoui’s jittery, explosive and athletic choreography; the skillful melding of Cody’s story with Morissette’s highly personal songs; and most of all the brilliant, exceedingly talented cast that creates in-depth, moving portraits of these familiar stereotypes, the show soars into something more organic, involving, and exciting than the usual jukebox show. You didn’t have to grow up an Alanis Morissette fan to enjoy this terrific musical.

FILM: What, Leftovers Again? George Carlin used to do a hilarious bit about foraging through the refrigerator only to find a plate of something that he couldn't identify ... or even tell if it was food. Hollywood has no such problem – once something's a hit, they'll remake or re-tell any story or concept over and over. Do any of these new swings and misses sound a bit familiar to you? The Call Of The Wild Starring Harrison Ford, Karen Gillan Directed by Chris Sanders 20th Century Fox • Now In Theaters Once again, Jack London's tale gets adapted for the big screen; this is at least the fourth time we can think of, in addition to a TV series and a bunch of small screen attempts at telling the story of Buck, a wonderful dog who really gets put through tough times during his life, eventually ending up as part of a sled team. This new attempt at telling the story is okay at best, with Ford quite appealing as Buck's beloved master John Thornton – but the dark pallor of the film as well as a dog that looks so blatantly CGI in spots (think of the dogs in

Babe) pretty much ruined this one for us. Fantasy Island Starring Lucy Hale, Maggie Q, Portia Doubleday, Michael Pena, Ryan Hansen, Jimmy O. Yang Directed by Jeff Wadlow Columbia • Now In Theaters (Barely)

Cripes, Hollwood can pervert anything – on the heels of films that took all the joy out of beloved characters such as Hansel & Gretal and The Lone Ranger comes this cockeyed idea to turn “Fantasy Island” into a horror/escape thriller. Don't get near this one; yeah there's a Mr. Rourke, but this is stupid times infinity, as the comedy isn't funny, the concept doesn't thrill, and even the young cast, seemingly picked solely for their attractiveness, looks bored, as if they're standing in line at the DMV – which is far scarier and actually more entertaining than this soulless drivel.

Reviews and previews by Cody Bell; photos courtesy respective film companies

Dolittle Starring Robert Downey Jr., Antonio Banderas, Emma Thompson, Rami Malek, Michael Sheen Directed by Todd Phillips Universal • Now In Theaters Few times in recent history has such a fine cast been as wasted as in this mess of a meandering, unfunny film that has the utter gall to be put into production while Eddie Murphy's triumpant turn in his (first, at least) Dr. Dolittle film is still fondly remembered, and is often run on pay cable. That movie at least had some great jokes; this thrown-together mess is too serious to be funny, and when it tries to get funny, it's seriously awful. The year has barely begun, but this cynical dog of a movie will earn a high spot on every critic’s worst of 2020 lists.

SPORTS BEAT New York Mets fans recently learned a lesson: Don't get your hopes up about an ownership change unless the contracts are signed and official announcements are made. Two months ago, the Mets issued a press release stating that the team was in negotiations with hedge fund financier Steve Cohen to purchase a majority equity stake in the team. Things remained quiet about any transfer of ownership, but many Kobe fans, as well as media types, Bryant started making it sound if it were a done deal, and that the Mets would soon be bidding for free agents seeking stratospheric contracts akin to the one that the New York Yankees lavished upon pitcher Gerrit Cole. The one thing which stood out from the get-go was the report that Fred Wilpon would remain the Mets CEO while his son, Jeff, would stay as its chief operating officer for the first five years that Cohen owned the team.

If you believed it all sounded a bit weird, you were right; it wasn’t surprising that the deal ultimately fell through. Last month, the Mets held their inaugural fan festival, and it was successful on all fronts. Most of the current team, including newly obtained players as Michael Wacha and Rick Porcello (as well as many former players) were on hand to chat with fans and take selfies. Fans were able to see parts of Citi Field that are normally off-limits to most, such as the batting cages and the home and visiting clubhouses. That day, the Mets and SNY smartly converted The Foxwoods Club at Citi Field into a studio, with fans serving as an audience as pre- and postgame air personalities Gary Apple, Todd Zeile, Andy Martino, and Jim Duquette interviewed players and executives and got some surprising responses. Second baseman Robinson Cano talked about how his season

The New York Yankees will be prohibitive favorites to win the American League East title this season, but they will have to

A Loving Son’s Annual Mega-Benefit: Bill Popp Honors “Daddy Tapes” In NYC

The legendary New York City-based keyboardist and bandleader Bill Popp has announced his 34th annual “Daddy Tapes” benefit for The American Heart Association on Sunday, March 8 beginning at 6:30 pm at The Parkside Lounge in New York City. Suggested donation at the door is $10, or, as Popp himself put it, “whatever you can give.” Once again, Bill Popp & The Tapes (right) will host and perform at this huge music event, which always seems to bring out a wealth of great performances, special guests, and more than a few surprises. This year’s performers include Anne Husick (a former member of The Tapes who has provided backing vocals for Ronnie Spector, Joey Ramone, and Wilson Pickett); the Brooklyn-based Irish music trio Popp & Reel Celtic; electro-pop performer Hampus His Pop, 1961 Svard; The Hipp Pipps, a trio of NYC indie scene players that rock out to classic grooves; the wry country artists Alan Lee & The Whiskey Bumps; the city-based rockers DonBlackKCAT & Friends; and The Alan Merrill Trio, who rose to fame in 1975 with its original version of “I Love Rock And Roll,” later covered by Joan Jett & The Blackhearts. The first benefit was held on “Daddy Tapes'” birthday, March 10, 1987, at CBGB. "My goal at the time was for the benefit to become an annual event that would raise money through live music and help those suffering from heart disease," said Bill Popp, the founder of the event and Daddy Tapes' son. "My father was my closest friend and the biggest supporter of my music career. After his death, I wanted to keep his spirit alive, so, by doing a benefit in his memory and donating the money to The American Heart Association, I've done just that.” The Daddy Tapes Benefit has become a local institution that has raised thousands of dollars for charity, as well as raise awareness. For more information on this special event: Call Bill Popp at (718) 3594110, log on to billpopp.com, or write to billpopp @ verizon.net.

BEER & SPIRITS Photo: Wolf Moon Bourbon by John Scherer via PR Newswire

Truly A Country Bourbon: Country music stars Jason Aldean and Florida Georgia Line have collaborated on Wolf Moon Bourbon. After touring together since 2014, Aldean, Tyler Hubbard, and Brian Kelley have become close friends and collaborators, teaming up for Aldean's #1 hits such as Aldean's "You Make It Easy," that FGL co-wrote, and joining forces on the song "Can't Hide Red." Now, a new venture: Wolf Moon is an 80-proof bourbon distilled from Midwestern grains and aged for four years in new, charred American oak barrels. The bourbon's flavor profile, chosen by the trio, offers caramel, sweet corn, honey and candied fruit, balanced by hints of oak and spice. "There's nothing like sharing a glass of bourbon with my crew after a show — you could say its been part of our ritual for years," said Aldean. "Tyler and Brian have been a part of that ritual and we wanted to create something to remind us of our favorite memories. Wolf Moon's name is a nod to the pack — the friends that become family. I'm looking forward to raising a glass with all my fans on the road this year." Florida Georgia Line's Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard are no strangers to the whiskey world, with the duo introducing Old Camp Whiskey back in 2016, starting with a peach pecan flavor to celebrate their home states and made to get the party started. It was only natural for them and the distilling team to collaborate with Jason on their next whiskey venture — a four-year-old straight bourbon, made for sipping and taking in “the good life” moments with friends. "Making good whiskey is a passion of ours, and we really wanted to create something new and fresh with Jason," said Florida Georgia Line's Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard. "We've had this idea for years and spent a lot of time making sure we got it just right. We're all so proud of this and can't wait for all of the memories to be made over Wolf Moon." Wolf Moon is currently available in select markets, on ReserveBar.com, and soon to be available nationally at a suggested retail price of $24.99 for a 750 ml bottle. For more information, visit WolfMoonBourbon.com. Your Show Of Shows: A huge Craft Beer Showcase will take over on February 29 and March 1 at The Long Island Exhibition Hall inside NYCB Live at Nassau Coliseum. This year's event returns with some of the best-known craft beers in the region, as well as food, live music, and other attractions. THE 36TH

MUSICIAN’S TALENT & SERVICES DIRECTORY

Arizona Lindsey The annual Your Big Break semifinals will be March 14 and April 25, with the finals taking place on June 6; the submission period recently ended for the 2020 event. Young music artists are judged in categories, including stage presence, overall musicianship, and fan reactions. The Gold Coast Arts Center, Love Revolution Org., and The Rick Eberle Agency give ambitious young artists an opportunity, presenting the annual Your Big Break showcase held at The Gold Coast Arts Center’s Weinstein Playhouse, where accomplished veteran music business professionals donate their time and resources to help identify and assist a new wave of aspiring stars to take them along the next steps in their professional musical journey. At the last finals event in May, Your Big Break crowned its seventh winner: Arizona Lindsey of Lindenhurst. “With her sweet-sounding voice, passionate vocal performance, and heartfelt lyrics, Arizona has been captivating the audience’s attention worldwide. Since her win, she has appeared in multiple live interviews and performances and featured on radio stations across the East Coast,” according to the organization. For more information, visit goldcoastarts.org, or call (516) 829-2570.

COMEDY Compiled by Bob Smith, who you might remember from the cruise ship revival of 1927’s “Honey Do The Hula.”

On The Rodia Again: The original My Father's Place was not just for Anthony Rodia rock; the legendary entertainment club also introduced scads of young comedians who went on to huge things. That tradition continues on February 28 as Anthony Rodia headlines My Father's Place At The Roslyn Hotel for two shows (at press time, the early one had sold out, but tickets remained for the 10:30 late performance). Rodia is a first generation Italian comedian born and raised in Westchester; using social media as his platform, he has exploded onto the comedy scene seemingly out of nowhere, making a name for himself and building a large fan base. He is known for his sketches and song parodies as well as his weekly "Road Rage Wednesday" using his popular character, Uncle Vinny. Expect a lot of comedy at My Father’s Place as the months roll on: Carie Karavas – see her on her Crackle comedy special – makes her MFP headlining debut on March 6. The More, The Merrier: As usual, Long Island and its surrounding environs remain a comedy hotbed, and we're here Terry McNeely to cover every guffaw, chortle, and spit take … Just booked at The Paramount in Huntington is an evening with Colin Jost of “Saturday Night Live,” who you might have seen at The Academy Awards on the arm of an actress we just couldn't place, but then again, we still watch a console black-andwhite television. The date is April 19; tickets are at paramountny.com and (631) 673-7300, and you had best act fast … The Long Island Maureen Langan Comedy Festival returns on March 7 to The Argyle Theatre in Babylon, featuring veteran standup performers in Matt Burke, Art Schill, Maureen Langan (above right), and Joe Starr; tickets and info are at (844) 631-5483 … Comedy that really goes to the dogs: Aragona's Comedy presents “A Fundraiser For Pawsome Animal Rescue” on March 7 at Legends Sports Grill Chris (formerly Uncle Chuck's) in Roach East Islip; for ticket information and reservations, call Tabytha at (631) 566-8896; on the bill are five area comedy stars in Terry McNeely (above left), Daren Dillon, Tony Landolfi, and George Gallo, with the equally funny John Butera serving as the emcee for a night of frolic for a very good cause. This event features a buffet dinner, a 50/50 raffle, auctions, and other attractions and special moments taking place throughout the night. Find tickets at eventbrite.com … You say you want stars? Another comedy benefit event is March 6 at Patchogue Theatre, where Chris Roach (“Kevin Can Wait,” “Ronkokomo”), Joe Starr, and Dennis Rooney rock the mic to raise funds for Long Island's Gigi's Playhouse Down's Syndrome Achievement Center, soon to open with our help. Tickets and more: patchoguetheatre.org and (631) 207-1313.

RHYTHM TRACKING

With Jimi LaLumia

Music At The Oscars: Pop music has become integral at all mass audience programs, as witnessed by all the back-and-forth over the performances of Shakira and Jennifer Lopez at The Super Bowl, which rage on this very moment. Likewise, the motion picture industry has always been dependent on music in and for the product known as movies. The Academy Awards has always tried to maintain an “of the moment” position where pop culture is concerned, so it was no surprise that Rhythm Tracking fave Billie Eilish was asked to perform The Beatles tune "Yesterday” during its "In Memorium' segment. It was a surprise to see Eminem Eminem show up to remind us of 8 Mile, as he turned out to be the showstopper of the night. While music films can turn out quite well for all parties concerned (recent examples include Queen, Elton John, and Lady Gaga) there can also be the disaster that the film version of Cats turned out to be. My months-ago predictions that Joker and Judy would take the Best Actor/Actress spots turned out to be quite accurate. Swift On Celluloid: Speaking of movies, I recently saw the Netflix documentary on Taylor Swift, Miss Americana, and it is a truly enjoyable watch. We follow her rise from a teenage country music star to her current stance as the biggest star in pop music, which I have dubbed her more than once here in Rhythm Tracking. You can't help but admire Swift's “just plain folks'' stance; her overcoming many career roadblocks, most notably the Kanye West incident; and her brave stand on the issues of the day, which she acknowledges could damage her career and her legacy. The film also serves as a great tutorial on how the current pop music scene operates. All in all, there's never a dull moment in this viewing experience. More From Marvel: My obsession with the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues in 2020 – but the pickings are lean, with only two new movies. Black Widow shows up in May, and will apparently wrap up the earthbound story line that began with the Iron Man flick in 2008; we then have to wait till the end of the year for The Eternals, which brings forth a new cast of characters and leads the storyline into the cosmos. It sounds more than a little interesting to me – or, as we used to say in the 1960s: "Make Mine Marvel!" Photos: Miss Americana poster courtesy Netflix

Jess Jocoy Americana Star On The Rise

Nashville-based Americana singer/songwriter Jess Jocoy will release her debut album, Such A Long Way, on April 10. The album was produced by Michael Rinne (Miranda Lambert) and Dylan Alldredge and recorded at Skinny Elephant Recording in Nashville. “The biggest truth in this record is my journey,” Jocoy said of her rootsy album (the followup to her 2018 EP, New Heart/Old Soul). After already releasing one single from the album (“Aching To Feel Alive”), two more singles from Such A Long Way were planned in the lead-up to the album's release: “Love Her Wild” (released February 14) and “Somebody Somewhere” (to be issued March 6). Learn more at jessjocoy.com.

Baldwin’s Melanie Martinez Headlines Radio City Music Hall

Atlantic recording artist (and Baldwin native) Melanie Martinez has announced an extensive leg of her world tour, one that will bring her home – to no less than Radio City Music Hall in New York City on June 24. The news came on the heels of the announcement of her new single, “Copy Cat (Feat. Tierra Whack),” available now at all DSPs and streaming services. "Copy Cat” will be featured on Martinez's first project since the 2019 album K-12, an EP entitled After School which is due for release this spring. Tierra Whack is the first artist to be included as a feature on a Melanie Martinez track. “I’m so thrilled to be releasing this song with the most magical artist and insanely gifted lyricist, Tierra Whack,” said Martinez. “This song was written years ago and from an empathetic perspective, even while in a very hurt place.” Find the soulful star all over social media.

Maddie & Tae: The New Album Gets A Release Date

The Platinum-selling duo Maddie & Tae will finally release their full-length sophomore album The Way It Feels (Mercury Nashville) on April 10. Produced by Jimmy Robbins and Derek Wells, the album is available for pre-save now. Here's a new age stat about this new age country duo: The pair now ranks the best streaming country duo of all time, with (at press time) more than 812 million streams played. “It has been four years since we’ve released an album. For us, this is a lot more than just an album release,” said the duo's Maddie Marlow. "This sophomore album will always be a reminder that no matter the setbacks and struggles, we will come out stronger and better.”

Rihanna: Lauded by NAACP

The NAACP bestowed Rihanna its President's Award during the 51st NAACP Image Awards on February 22. The award is presented in recognition of special achievement and distinguished public service, with previous recipients including last year's recipient, Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter, as well as Jesse Jackson, Lauryn Hill, Soledad O'Brien, Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice, and Muhammad Ali, among others. NAACP President Derrick Johnson presented the award to Rihanna during the awards special, shown on BET. "Rihanna has not only enjoyed a groundbreaking career as an artist and musician but has also distinguished herself as a stellar public servant," said Johnson.

Meek Mill: Joins Justin Timberlake For New Smash

Meek Mill has released a collaboration (and video) with Justin Timberlake titled “Believe,” which marks the first time they’ve worked togither. Produced by Rob Knox and co-produced and written by Timberlake, the two first hit the studio in October after Knox brought the track to Timberlake’s attention. “This is a special track, and I’m grateful I had the opportunity to collaborate with Justin on it,” said Mill. “We really wanted to send a motivational message that would inspire people to take it to the next level and pursue their dreams.”
