FILM: The Finest (& The Flops) Of 2019

It was a good yet bad year in filmdom, as box office tallies were sluggish even as some films (Joker, The Avengers: Endgame, Toy Story 4, and The Lion King) set various attendance and financial records. The highs were spectacular, but not everthing can be good; here's our picks for the best films of 2019, and they're all ones that we'll remember for years to come – as well as the sheer dross we were forced to endure throughout this past year (and didn’t bother you with reviews about; you’re welcome).

SPORTS BEAT have a five-year transition period in which they will still be calling the shots – which means that they can buy five years of not having to spend funds. There is also no guarantee that Cohen will be Flushing’s answer to George Steinbrenner when it comes to acquiring premium baseball talent. Even the most strident critic of the Wilpons can’t fault them for not matching the five-year $118 million contract that the Seth Philadelphia Phillies lavished Lugo upon former Mets starter Zack Wheeler, who became a free agent at the end of the 2019 season. Wheeler is a good pitcher, but he’s not that good; I never heard a single Mets fan say “I have to get to Citi Field tonight because Zack Wheeler is pitching.” In a bid to bolster his team’s starting pitching, Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen is investing in the talents of a pair of veteans: Michael

Wacha and Rick Porcello. Wacha was always a smart starting pitcher with The St. Louis Cardinals, while Porcello enjoyed a good career (including a Cy Young Award) until 2019, when he turned in a miserable season with The Gerrit Boston Red Cole Sox. His timing couldn’t have been worse, because it was in his walk year; Van Wagenen had no choice but to sign Wacha and Porcello because the Mets minor league system is barren of pitching. The organization finally gave up on perennial minor league

The New York Yankees reminded everyone of why they take the business of trying to win World Series far more seriously than any other MLB team when they signed free agent starting pitcher Gerrit Cole to a nine-year, $324 million contract. It reaffirmed that the Yankees’ business model is based on revenue enhancement as opposed to cost containment. The New York Mets, of course, have long embraced a business philosophy that champions fiscal restraint – even though it is an entertainment entity in the same industry and market (which happens to be the nation’s largest). Some Mets fans seemed delirious when they heard that Great Neck-born hedge fund financier Steven Cohen was in “negotiations” to purchase a majority equity stake from the current team owners, the Wilpon family. The reality is that it is not a done deal, and even if contracts are signed, the Wilpons will

BEER & SPIRITS

Raise Your Glass, Islanders: The debut of The Raise Your Glass Festival offers two sessions at 1 and 5:30 pm on January 25 at The Long Island Exhibition Hall inside NYCB Live At Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale. For information and tickets: nycblive.com or raiseyourglassli.com. This event will showcase area wineries and food vendors. Guests will enjoy unlimited samples of wine, beer, spirits, and ciders – served in a souvenir tasting glass – and will have the opportunity to enjoy dozens of the area's top gourmet foods from New York City-based restaurants, food trucks, and vendors. A “VIP” ticket option allows guests 30-minute early admission and a bottle of wine. Dewar's Does It: Dewar's Scotch Whisky recently announced that Whisky Advocate named the premium Dewar's Double Double 21-Year-Old Blended Scotch Whisky as the best scotch whiskey in their annual top 20 whiskey list. The new blend takes second place in the overall awards, and stands as the highest-scoring scotch following a blind tasting review of hundreds of submissions. Dewar's Double Double 21-Year-Old Blended Scotch Whisky is just one marque in the recently launched Dewar's Double Double series, a brand innovation led by master blender Stephanie Macleod, recently named "Master Blender of the Year" by the 2019 International Whisky Competition (IWC). Inspired by Dewar's double-ageing process utilized across the portfolio, Macleod tapped the brand's heritage to create a newfour-stage ageing method, or “double-double-ageing.” "We could not be happier with the traction our Double Double Series has received this past year, and the Whisky Advocate ranking is a true testament to the hard work of a team dedicated to creating extraordinary quality," said Brian Cox of Dewar's Scotch Whisky North America. "It's an honor to be included among the Whisky Advocate Top 20 and to be recognized as the top scotch amongst our peers – it certainly fuels our efforts looking forward." "We've had quite a year across our portfolio, launching unique scotch expressions that have exceeded expectations," said Macleod. "We're extremely proud of Double Double being recognized by the Whisky Advocate Top 20, as it reinforces Dewar's commitment to our heritage and also innovation." Learn more at dewars.com.

Ice Cube

Mohegan Sun (CT): Ice Cube, easily one of rap music’s important figures, comes to Mohegan Sun Arena on Friday, February 21 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $39 and $29, and are available through ticketmaster.com and the Mohegan Sun Box office. For more information: call the Entertainment and Special Events hotline at (888) 226-7711. After penning some of the most memorable lyrics on N.W.A’s groundbreaking tracks – including what many consider to be the greatest rap single of all time, “Straight Outta Compton” – Ice Cube broke away at the height of the group’s success. As he moved on to launch his solo career, his debut studio album AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted (Priority, 1990) sold more than one million copies. A concept album about the fall and rise of the black man, Ice Cube’s solo sophomore effort Death Certificate (Priority, 1991) debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200, eventually selling more than two million copies. Ocean Casino (AC): The start of 2020 will be rocking at this fresh new 38 Special destination spot by the sea, with headliners including southern rockers 38 Special on February 14; country star Lee Brice on February 15; and a Valentine's Soul Jam on February 16 featuring The Stylistics, Enchantment, Bloodstone, The Intruders, and Peaches & Herb, all heading for Ovation Hall. Get the scoop at TheOceanAC.com and (609) 783-8000. Empire City Casino (Yonkers): Billed as one of the closest casinos to New York City (and it most certainly is), Empire City has been a boon to the Westchester County economy since the day it opened – and continues to bring a myraid of entertainment styles to its stages. Located adjacent to Yonkers Raceway, the two venues combine for an entire evening of adult entertainment. Such popular area acts as Nine Deez 12X Nite, The Touch, and 12X have graced the stages here. The popular 5Alive series continues on Wednesdays. Learn more: empirecitycasino.com and (914) 968-4200.

Stack It Up At IHOP

IHOP's Still Jumpin': Recently, we were riding down Old Country Road in the Westbury area and decided to have breakfast for dinner, you know, like adults do. Alas, the legendary Thomas's Ham & Eggery was closed (325 Old Country Road in Carle Place; the lines out the door most mornings will tell you how good it still is) and that hour, and we won't even consider the woeful Denny's option in the area. So we pointed our car toward the relatively new IHOP location at 533 Old Country Road in Westbury (they're at (516) 280-5000), and, wonder of wonders, we had a nice light meal and a grand old time. Even serious foodies continue to swear by this national chain's classic buttermilk stack of pancakes – and that goes double for locals, as the location in Williston Park (contact them at (516) 7468421) is almost as busy as Thomas's. Sure, it's easy to make fun of – ahem – frivolous food coloring-laden “holiday” pancakes choices at IHOP during holidays (not to mention the “Rooty Tooty Fresh 'N Fruity®” pancakes, which … well, do we have to state it here?), but that stuff is for kids in the first place. For a nice, hot stack of pancakes, eggs, and a hot cup of coffee, you could do a lot worse, and the prices are more than reasonable. A tip of the cap to the staff at the Carle Place location, who greeted us with a smile and served us so quickly you'd figure they were getting a bonus for alacrity. In any event, this is good, simple food in a good, simple, clean place. What's not to like? As The Name Implies: Veggie Grill opened its first New York City location on December 13 at 12 W. 23rd St in the Flatiron District. As Veggie Grill's 37th location, this marks the company's entrance into the New York market and continued expansion on the east coast. Veggie Grill crafts plant-based meals for all kinds of eaters. The New York City location features a menu with flavor profiles made from 100 percent plant-based food. The lineup includes signature Veggie Grill items such as burgers, sandwiches, tacos, entrée salads, bowls and more. Favorites such as the VG Beyond Burger, Santa Fe Crispy Chickin' sandwich, Rustic Farm Bowl, and the Mediterranean Supergreens Salad are available, along with the restaurant's seasonal menu. "We are thrilled to bring 100 percent plant-based handcrafted food to New Yorkers that share our belief around making food matter more," said CEO Steve Heeley. "We can't wait to share our chef-inspired dishes with this great city as we continue our east coast expansion." THEATER

Great Performances: Betrayal • Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre The Height Of The Storm Samuel J. Friedman Theatre

The Height Of The Storm

The mob scene of stage-door fans attests to Tom Hiddleston (“The Avengers”) and Charlie Cox’s (“Daredevil”) status as film and TV superstars; their subtle, rich performances in Betrayal (along with “Velvet Buzzsaw”’s Zawe Ashton) in the hit London revival of Harold Pinter’s 1978 semi-autobiographical love-triangle attest to their acting chops. Betrayal unfolds in reverse chronological order from 1977, two years after the end of a seven-year affair, to 1968 when the first romantic sparks ignite between galleryist Emma (Aston) and literary agent Jerry (Cox), the best friend of Emma’s book publisher husband Robert (Hiddleston). In each scene the audience has an insider’s knowledge that the characters don’t. It’s an intriguing cat-and-mouse game that in this bare-bones production with just chairs and lighting as scenic design, under the smooth, clear direction of Jamie Lloyd, still focuses our attention with laser-like clarity on the actors’ subtle expressions hinting at who-knows-what at any point in the play.

Dame Eileen Atkins and Oliver and Tony-winner Jonathan Pryce give mesmerizing performances in The Height Of The Storm as a long-married couple facing dementia and death in French playwright Florian Zeller’s new play (translated by Christopher Hampton). In the spacious kitchen and living room of French literary lion Andre (Pryce), he and his pragmatic daughter Anne (Amanda Drew) discuss the recent death of Madeleine (Atkins), his wife and helpmate of more than 50 years. Suddenly Madeleine appears and conversation continues between the couple as if she’s not dead. In a later discussion between Madeleine and Anne, it appears that it is Andre who is dead. Zeller mystifies as he messes with the audience’s heads: Who is dead, who is alive? What are the tricks memory plays on the aged? Is this once-great writer now in the throws of dementia and denial in response to the loss of his wife? Pryce is amazing; alternately proud and commanding, raging and befuddled as he slips into senility – and Atkins is strong, calm, and understated as the rock in this marriage.

Slave Play Golden Theatre

Called provocative, polarizing, and irreverent, Jeremy O. Harris’s buzzed about and lauded Slave Play – a searing, explosive examination of race, gender and sex in America – has lost none of its power and immediacy in its move to Broadway. This audacious, thoughtprovoking work challenges and discomforts audiences, and according to its director Robert O’Hara, resulted in death threats when it premiered at The New York Theatre Workshop last year. Slave Play not only pushes buttons, but also shifts moods and styles as it messes with the audience’s heads. Told in three seemingly separate but actually interrelated scenes, it begins on a plantation in the antebellum South as three interracial couples enact scenes of master-slave power, domination, and exaggerated racial stereotypes: a white overseer (Paul Alexander Nolan) and a black slave (the spectacular Joaquina Kalukango, a new addition to the pitchperfect off-Broadway ensemble); a plantation owner’s wife (the over-the-top Annie McNamara) and a violin-playing mulatto (Sullivan Jones) and an indentured servant (James Cusati-Moyer) and a black slave “manager” (Ato Blankson-Wood). After a character shouts a “safe” word, the action stops, upending everything we’ve just witnessed: characters turn out to be contemporary interracial couples participating in “Antebellum Sexual Performance Therapy,”

(hence the sex toys, nudity, and pop music) enacting their racial fantasies to overcome “Racialized Inhibiting Disorder,” or “Anhedonia” – the inability of the black partner to feel pleasure with their white lover. It is a funny sendup of pretentious psychological jargon of the therapists (Chalia La Tour and Irene Sofia Lucio), a couple with issues of their own. The play’s coda focuses on the repercussions

28 • Good Times Magazine - January 14 - 27, 2020

of the therapy between OCD Kenesia (Kalukango) and her British husband Jim (Nolan), when Kenesia finds her voice and, in volcanic anger, tells of the demons in the walls, the haunting presence of Black slave elders and her overwhelming need to be listened to and heard. It is a cataclysmic, harrowing scene that rattles the audience and puts shivers down its spine.

MEDIA

HBO – Still The Standard: With all the talk about the new Apple+ and Disney over-the-top straming ventures, the venerable Home Box Office – simply HBO to you and me – rolls on with quality programming even after the mega-popular “Game Of Thrones” bashed its way to its bloody (and historic ratings-grabbing) finish. So what will be HBO's next hit? New series are coming, of course: A new HBO comedy series, “Avenue 5,” debuts this month on

Photos courtesy HBO

Avenue 5

The Legends Rock On: One of the biggest yearly southern rock and country live events, Charlie Daniels' Volunteer Jam, returns for 2020 on September 15 at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena with a variety of stars taking part in a jam that seems to get more historic as the years roll by (the early roster will be announced in February). “We play over one hundred cities every year and they're all special in their own way, but when you get a chance to bring it all back home, especially when so many of your friends are joining you, it don't get much better than that," said Daniels. "Jammin' in the Guitar Town, second to none!" Tickets and info: ticketmaster.com and charliedaniels.com … Steve Forbert has released a limitededition remastered vinyl reissue for the 40th anniversary of his Jackrabbit Slim album. A special 500 copies were pressed on redcolored wax; only a few were left at press time; check area stores to see if you can score one of the coveted discs. Forbert will be honored as the “Excellence In Music” recipient at The 2020 Governor’s Arts Awards on February 6 in downtown Jackson, Steve Mississippi … British blues rockers Forbert Wishbone Ash just keep going: They'll release a new album, Coat Of Arms, on February 28 via SPV/Steamhammer. Their latest release once again features Ash's characteristic twin lead guitar parts, melodies, and diverse stylistic facets. “Following the countless songs that we have written throughout the history of Wishbone Ash, my own expectations are Wishbone Ash

extremely high,” said the band's Andy Powell. “On the one hand as a composer you try not to repeat yourself in your creative output but to come up with new ideas all the time, on the other you want to remain faithful to your style. Good songs need an inner conviction and the right inspiration. We had both when we started working on Coat Of Arms. You’d be right in describing the current lineup as the best in the history of Wishbone Ash. We all love our lives as musicians, the direct contact with our fans, travelling, the shows, our songs.” Today's Wishbone Ash features Powell, Bob Skeat, Joe Crabtree, and Mark Abrahams.

the network (as well as HBO Go, HBO Now, HBO On Demand, and partners’ streaming platforms). Created by Armando Iannucci of “Veep,” this new comedy is set 40 years in the future, when traveling the solar system is no longer the stuff of sci-fi fantasy, but a booming, multibillion-dollar business. “Avenue 5” stars Hugh Laurie (still fondly remembered for “House M.D.”) as Ryan Clark, the confident and suave captain of Avenue 5, a space cruise ship with luxury amenities such as gourmet buffets, a spa, an observation deck and yoga classes. As the series begins, Avenue 5’s eight-week journey around Saturn is underway, and its systems are optimal – but when the ship encounters technical difficulties, it’s up to Clark and his crew to calm the disgruntled passengers and find a way to deal with unexpected events onboard … though they may or may not be equipped for the task. Other cast members for “Avenue 5” include Josh Gad, Zach Woods, Rebecca Front, Suzy Nakamura, Lenora Crichlow, Nikki Amuka-Bird and Ethan Phillips. Iannucci has written, directed and produced numerous elevision and radio comedy shows. “Veep,” the HBO comedy series created by Armando, has picked up numerous awards including three Emmys® for Outstanding Comedy Series. More news from HBO: A documentary, “Moonlight Sonata: Deafness In Three Movements” (above left) debuted to much fanfare last month. The story of a close-knit family’s experience with deafness, the documentary explores the meaning of loss through the stories of a deaf boy growing up, a deaf man growing old, and perhaps the world’s most famous deaf person, Ludwig van Beethoven, who crafted a sonata that would resonate across time and cultures. The film is directed by Oscar nominee and Emmy winner Irene Taylor Brodsky, whose son, Jonas, began going deaf as an infant, later undergoing surgery for cochlear implants as a toddler and finally rediscovering a world of hearing — and music.

PRO WRESTLING

With Bob Smith

“Twenty years ago, we pretended to hurt each other, and the fans believed it. Today, we really do hurt each other, and the fans think it's fake.” – Jim Cornette, from jimcornette.com The legendary manager and broadcaster quoted above has been much in the news during the past few weeks, but this time, we’re quoting him about something he wrote several years ago – and what he was concerned about only seems to be getting worse. On the weekend of December 14, I watched two PPV events: The NWA's Into The Fire – the regsurgent Billy Corgan-owned brand's first major event following the launch of its YouTube TV show – as well as WWE's 2019 TLC (Tables, Ladders & Chairs), an annual event that I've always kind of disdained since, well, it's sort of dangerous for its participants. After years of covering the sport and getting to know and befriend many professional wrestlers, my admiration for those Kairi with the gumption to step into a Sane pro ring even once knows no bounds. These men and women put it all on the line just to entertain mat fans as best as they can. So let's cut to the chase: Reading injury lists following WWE pay-per-view events is getting to be all too common. At this year's TLC, it was clear that the sensational Kairi Sane was pretty much knocked out (it was later reported that she suffered a concussion, though at press time that was not confirmed; yet, she was pulled from end-of-year WWE events) during her completely out-of-control tag team TLC match pitting her and Asuka versus Charlotte Flair (who herself banged her head in a hard-to-watch powerbomb through a table from the top turnbuckle) and Becky Lynch. More from the same card: Bloody facial injuries to the promising Alistair Black and Andrade, and other times where such stars as Big E and Rusev took some truly scary-looking pounding. I'm certainly not against violence in wrestling, but the way it's been presented Charlotte recently in WWE confuses me – Flair particularly considering this is a product they're constantly selling to children and teens. Both the PPV and the “Raw” edition that followed the next night featured such brutal angles and moments that I had to check my channel guide to make sure I wasn't watching a garbage wrestling league such as CZW or XPW. So let us get this straight: Intentional bleeding to draw heat is pretty much verboten, while getting smashed through a table, legit, is acceptable? Having your well-trained stars risk their careers by falling off aluminum ladders (and being slammed through them) is just another day at the office? Depicting wrestlers being beaten in back rooms and in the ring with “steel pipes” and oversized mallets is acceptable? Whatever happened to storyline fines and suspensions? Worse, whatever happened to two athletes going at it tooth-and-nail for the importance of pinning an opponent's shoulders to the mat – sometimes to win a coveted championship? Funny – that last thing is what what the NWA pay-per-view featured during its entire card, and it somehow managed to both satisfy its fans and not see several of its stars forced to take time off for their TV tapings the following two days. Imagine that. The next time WWE – which in recent weeks has seen rough language and tons of violence pepper their presentations – suffers another record low in the ratings books? Perhaps the company will eventually remember a little something called ring psychology, where a little less can be a whole lot more. We’d bet Cornette knows exactly what we mean. RHYTHM TRACKING

With Jimi LaLumia

Crashing Into Punk: The talk in New York City is the great film from Beth Lasch, Punk: Crashing Into Being, shown on December 5 at Howl! on Manhattan's lower east side. Lasch hosted a Manhattan cable TV show in the mid-1970s and spent a lot of time filming and interviewing bands and tastemakers at clubs such as Max's Kansas City and CBGB. The result is an eye-opening reminder of how vital and world changing that scene was. The film contains interviews with Peter Crowley, who was booking The Ramones, Johnny Thunders, Patti Smith, and Wayne County at Mothers' and next Max's, as well as Hilly Kristal, who booked the shows at CBGB. Performances never seen before (and the bands being interviewed before they received any other visual media attention) are of a historic nature, and hopefully Lasch will be able to secure rights from everyone to share this with the world as a DVD or cable broadcast event. On The Charts – Again: The heartbeat of the music business for decades is and has been the charts, and since it is a business, the charts were based on the sales of vinyl records, cassettes, and compact discs. Simply hearing music without owning it was not enough to deserve impacting a chart based on consumers and product; music fans were required to put their money where their ears where. The advent of digital technology and the Internet changed all that, as people began to download music without paying for it. Almost all forms of entertainment, including books, TV shows, and movies were being impacted at the same time, but the music industry quickly surrendered as streaming became commonplace – and the industry decided that streaming songs or listening to them on YouTube should also have chart impact alongside sales – just “weighted” differently, to use their jargon. This was initially used in regard to the Hot 100 singles chart, determining the most popular songs in the country. The industry has now decided to somehow have this policy impact albums as well, with some voodoo equations that somehow impact the that chart. This completely negates the value of the charts, primarily those that appear in Billboard Magazine. These charts, since their inception, have always been viewed with a raised eyebrow by those in the know, but they did, indeed, reflect the consumption of recorded product as a financial transaction. This latest kneejerk reaction to the tech world completely sinks the ship when it comes to any semblance of legit viability regarding the public's voice. Very interesting! Very cool! Wow! BITS & PIECES ‘Season One’ Is Just The Beginning

Nasty Cherry

Hailey Whitters

Ends 2019 With Kudos From Near & Far

Nashville-based singer/songwriter Hailey Whitters closed out 2019 being named one of SiriusXM and Pandora's Artists To Watch 2020, and at the same time, her single "Ten Year Town" ranked at #2 on Rolling Stone's "25 Best Country and Americana Songs of 2019" list. Whitters also announced she will support Tanya Tucker for select dates on the “CMT Next Women of Country: Bring My Flowers Now Tour.” In November during CMA Awards week, Whitters was named one of CMT's “2020 Next Women of Country Class,” an effort to support and expose developing female talent, both signed and unsigned, in a male-dominated format. Whitters will also support Jordan Davis on tour.

Nasty Cherry has unleashed its debut EP, Season 1, on Charli XCX’s Vroom Vroom Recordings – and it came out one week after the reveal of XCX and the band’s unscripted docuseries “I’m With The Band: Nasty Cherry,” now on Netflix. Spanning six tracks, Season 1 showcases the indescribable group with songs such as "Music With Your Dad,” "Live Forever," "Win," and what some are calling the EP’s highlight, “F**k Modern Love.” They’ll play Bowery Ballroom on March 5.

Sergio Mendes: New Work From A Legend

Bossa nova pioneer Sergio Mendes returns with On In the Key Of Joy, out February 28. Released to coincide with a new documentary by filmmaker John Scheinfeld, the albums melds the classic Brazilian, jazz, and pop sounds that have long characterized Mendes’ music. “This album is all about joy and celebration,” said Mendes. :

Always With Grace: WanderWaal Launches EP

Singer/songwriter Grace VanderWaal has officially released her new EP, Letters: Vol. 1, which features the emotional track “I Don’t Like You,” the groovy “Waste My Time,” and the uplifting “Ur So Beautiful,” alongside three new songs. The collection is a series of moody, layered ruminations on self-doubt, love, confidence, and growing up. “This new EP, this new era, this new me … it’s very colorful, but muted — very self-expressive, but in an understandable way,” VanderWaal said of her new work, available now.

Lyn Stanley Brings London Back In Style

Sultry swing singer Lyn Stanley enjoyed a banner 2019 thanks in part to her most adventurous album: London With A Twist – Live At Bernie’s. Stanley’s second Julie London tribute album features the singer on a dozen standards with her Jazz Mavericks, and a quintet featuring guitarist John Chiodini.
