Project Grand Slam (PGS), the brainchild of acclaimed bassist/ composer Robert Miller, is a hot unit in the jazz world – and they’re coming to Long Island for a headlining date on February 21 at 8 pm at My Father’s Place at The Roslyn Hotel. For tickets and information on this performance: myfathersplace.com and projectgrandslam.com; call (516) 413-3535. Solidly accomplished, Project Grand Slam is a jazz/rock/Latin fusion band with a self-described “New York City groove.” The band’s newest album, PGS 7 (released in June 2019, pictured here) is the group’s seventh studio album, and features 12 new songs written and arranged by Miller that continue the musical diversity that PGS is known for. Adding to his musical signature of taking classic rock songs from the 1960s and “reimagining” them in the Project Grand Slam style, PGS 7 includes Miller’s unique take on Dobie Gray’s 1960s song “The ‘In’ Crowd.” Originally formed in 2007 and re-formed by Miller in 2015, the band consists of Miller leading a group of young musicians from around the world including Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Mexico, Canada, Brazil and Cuba. In its history, PGS has had a #1 Billboard album (2018’s “Trippin’”), scored more than three million video views, and has been featured in an episode of the NBC series, “Lipstick Jungle” featuring Brooke Shields. Project Grand Slam has wowed audiences from jazz to rock, from millennials to baby boomers, at festivals, performing arts centers, and other major venues, in the U.S. and around the world. It has headlined and performed alongside a number of major artists, including Blues Traveler, Edgar Winter, Yes, Boney James, and Mindi Abair, and by doing so has cultivated a worldwide fan base. Miller writes and arranges all of the band’s material, including vocal and instrumental originals. One of his musical signatures is to take classic rock hits and “reimagine” them in Project Grand Slam’s unique style. In the past, the group has ushered in its own versions of Jimi Hendrix’ “Fire,” The Kinks’ “You Really Got Me,” Cream’s “I’m So Glad,” The Who’s “I Can’t Explain,” and Phish’s “Free.”

Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn)

Starring Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rosie Perez, Ella Jay Basco Directed by Cathy Yan Warner Bros. Pictures • Now in theaters Comics fans can't get enough of the twisted, out of control, sexy Harley Quinn … and film fans can't get enough of Margot Robbie regardless of the role she's cast in. The youth market is racing to the theaters for this wild tale, narrated by Quinn's character, that has the blonde mallet-wielder teaming with Black Canary, Renee Montoya, and Huntress to take on the evil duo of Roman Sionis and Zsasz. Great filmmaking? Not close. A perfect popcorn movie? Times 150. Robbie can do no wrong, and this film (and performance) only adds to her inevitable ranking as Hollywood’s most popular actress.

SPORTS BEAT Eli Manning made the right decision to retire from pro football after 16 years with The New York Giants, though it couldn't have been an easy one. The quarterback still wanted to play, and still has the ability – the problem is that Manning wants to be a starter and not an emergency backup, and at age 39 it isn’t realistic. He could have waited until the beginning of the 2020 NFL season for the inevitable injury occurring to a starting QB, but he figured that it wouldn’t be worth uprooting his family for at that point. New York Jets wide receiver Robby Anderson is now a free agent and has stated that he wants to be compensated as if he were Eli the top receiver in the NFL. Manning The Jets have not made the playoffs during Anderson’s tenure, and while he has hauled in a few long passes, his impact has not matched the attention he has gotten from the local sports media. Hopefully, Anderson was watching Green Bay Packers All-Pro wide receiver

Davante Adams during the playoffs to learn what a true top NFL receiver looks like. The New York Mets had little choice but to name Luis Rojas as their manager in light of the Carlos Beltran debacle. Rojas had been a coach and a manager in the Mets farm system for 13 years and worked with the majority of the players on the team’s current roster, most of whom had high praise for him. Economics certainly played a role in the decision to hire Rojas; the Mets are paying for the remaining year on deposed manager Mickey Callaway’s contract. There was no way that the Mets were going to invest in a veteran manager given those sunk costs. Baseball needs more diversity in the managerial and executive ranks, and Rojas, from the Dominican Republic, helps in that regard. Rojas is 38 and is going to make his share of mistakes,

especially when it comes to dealing with the New York media. Hopefully, everyone will give him more leeway than they gave Callaway, another first-time manager. saying that the Senate should subpoena The Baseball Hall of Fame to discover the name of the one writer who left Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter off of his ballot. At his Hall of Fame press conference, Jeter did not seem too perturbed at not being a unanimous selection the way his teammate Mariano Rivera was last year, as he

expressed gratitude for the number of votes he did receive. He also addressed the issue of the declining percentage of AfricanAmerican players in the majors by saying that it could be a generational thing. He pointed out that college football and basketball stars get to the NFL and NBA respectively as soon as they leave school, while it doesn’t work that way for college baseball stars, who still have to apprentice in the minor leagues most of the time. Jeter is currently a minority owner with The Miami Marlins. As he was leaving the Hall of Fame press conference, I told him that Marlins Park desperately needs mass transit. “Make it happen!” he replied. Petco One reason that the Marlins’ Park attendance is poor is that the only way to get there is by car (the parking charge is $20) or Uber. The Miami area’s leading industry is tourism, and the lack of a bus or train option to get to Marlins Park prevents many fans from attending games. It’s a shame, because Marlins Park is a beautiful place to watch a game, and the concession stand prices are reasonable

compared to New York. Another highly recommended stadium is San Diego’s Petco Park. I attended the San Diego Padres Fan Fest, where admission was free and attendees could walk on the field and talk to Padres players. I asked Padres third baseman Manny Machado, who received a $300 million, 10-year contract last year about new Yankees ace pitcher, Gerrit Cole, whose contract dwarfed his: “I am thrilled for him and any player that can get their fair compensation,” he said. Padres veteran pitcher Drew Pomeranz about Cole: “He thrives under the spotlight.” That’s obviously good news for New York fans.

BEER & SPIRITS

Aye Aye, Captain: Pabst undoubtedly has much more of a vaunted history that simply being the favorite canned beer in the current college scene. Here’s the scoop: Pioneered by Captain Frederick Pabst, Pabst Brewing Company has been brewing beer since the late 1800s. One hundred and seventy-five years later, the Captain’s vision transformed a small-scale brewery into one of the nation’s largest – and now the Pabst company has unveiled a new luxury beer brand, Captain Pabst, and launches its flagship IPA, called Seabird. Seabird is a sessionable, premium India Pale Ale, brewed with Magnum, Citra, Cascade, and Mosaic hops. The beer takes its name from Captain Fredrick Pabst’s last steamship, which was a catalyst in his decision to enter the beer business. Caught near the shore in December of 1863 during an unexpected storm, Captain Fredrick Pabst strategically beached "The Seabird" on the sands of Whitefish Bay on Lake Michigan without casualties. With irreversible damage to The Seabird, Captain Pabst made the fateful decision to walk away from the sea. Hanging up his captain hat, he purchased a brewery that would eventually bare his name and deliver some of the most iconic American beer brands of all time. Here’s the rub in case you’re interested in sipping a bit of history: Seabird IPA is available now, but only as a Midwest exclusive for sale across Wisconsin and the greater Chicago area; fans, of course, are already clamoring for it across the United States. Learn more at pabst.com and captainpabst1864.com. It's Bourbon Fest Time Again: The seventh annual T.J. Finley's Winter Bourbon Festival is set for February 22 from 3:30 to 7 pm at the popular Bay Shore location; learn more at (631) 647-4856; advance tickets are at winterbourbonfestival.com. As usual, the event will be multi-faceted; of course, it will focus on stellar bourbons, but also available on site will be unlimited barbecue, a charity auction for Gavin's Got Heart, an array of whiskies and barrel-aged beers, a unique Irish coffee station, and other attractions that keep spirits fans coming to this Finley's special event year after year.

Micky Dolenz The Monkees & So Much More At My Father’s Place Micky Dolenz – who with Peter Tork, Davy Jones, and Mike Nesmith formed the 1960s made-for-TV band The Monkees that became a legitimate cultural phenomenon – has never stopped creating music, acting, and being the same show business icon he’s always been. The personable veteran star performs on February 23 for two shows at 3 and 7 pm at My Father’s Place at The Roslyn Hotel. For tickets and information: myfathersplace.com and (516) 413-3535. There likely isn’t a rock fan of a certain age who doesn’t remember Dolenz’ voice on such hits as “I’m A Believer,” “I’m Not Your Stepping Stone,” and “Pleasant Valley Sunday” – yet, this is a musician clearly not resting on his past. Fronting a tight band, Dolenz doesn’t phone in his hits, but performs them with passion and good cheer. Check with mickydolenz.com for “Meet and Greet” opportunities along with this day of music and memories. – Bob Smith

RHYTHM TRACKING

With Jimi LaLumia

HOF Omissions: We delivered our congratulations last time for the long overdue induction of Marc Bolan & T.Rex into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Everyone has their own opinions, but not everyone has their own column to express their distress over those still standing in the shadows. As I do have a forum, I will revisit my remaining grievances, starting with The Marvelettes, who if for no other reason, gave Motown its first national #1 pop chart/Billboard hit, "Please Mr.Postman," which was a historic milestone more than 50 years ago; Mott The Hoople, whose body of work in the 1970s, highlighted by the anthem "All The Young Dudes," holds a bright shining space in the rock timeline; Slade, whose early ’70s influence worldwide continues to be felt (decades later, Quiet Riot made a career of covering Slade songs that should have had their day in court in America); and the 1960s girl group The Shangri-Las, who scored a early breakthrough for women by coming on tough and brassy while maintaining their femininity Billie without effort. Eilish Oh well, there's always next year! Grammys & Pop: This year, The Grammy Awards got off to an interesting start: The head of the organization was dismissed from her post over reported charges of allegedly tampering with the votes, allegedly altering the nominees in some categories, and other infractions that were considered damaging to the event itself. Things were further mired in mud when she reportedly accused Grammy officials of sexual harassment, leading to Taylor Swift stepping out of an appearance on the show. There was no problem with the other female artists, who continue to dominate the pop music world as they have in the past decade; Billie Eilish, who we raved about when her album was released, swept all the major awards – Best Song, Best Album, best everything. There were dynamic performances throughout the night, my favorite being Usher's tribute to Prince. I had forgotten how incredibly talented Usher is, and this was a great reminder. Despite all the drama, this Grammy presentation was the best I've seen in years, so thumbs up to all concerned. Iggy's A Biggie: The big surprise of the Grammy event was Iggy Pop receiving a "Lifetime Achievement Award," something we never expected the stuffed shirts at the Grammys board to even consider, let alone actually deliver. Iggy has been the central transforming figure in the rock & roll timeline, Iggy from 1969 to the present day, Pop leading the cycle of glam into punk into alternative into hardcore and beyond. Congratulations to Iggy, and thumbs up to the Grammy folks who made a smart and timely decision with this one. Photos: Billie Eilish courtesy Interscope Records; Iggy Pop by Eddy Berthier (CC)

COMEDY

Compiled by Bob Smith, whose recent gall bladder operation was described by surgeons as “oddly hilarious.” Photos: Bobby Collins courtesy Patchogue Theatre; Ron White provided by Live Nation/The Paramount

Carie's Incredible: Congratulations to one of the hottest area-based comedians at present, Carie Karavas, who recently saw her new comedy special, “Men, Flaws, & Menopause,” debut on Sony's Crackle over-thetop streaming network. Karavas has been taking both the New York City and Long Island comedy club scenes by storm during the past couple of years, thanks primarily to her her hardhitting style of delivery and world-weary demeanor. It only makes sense that she'll be the headliner at My Father's Carie Karavas Place at The Roslyn Hotel on March 6; tickets and more at myfathersplace.com.

Ron White

Paramount's A-Poppin': There's more comedy than you can shake a swizzle stick at in the coming days and weeks at The Paramount in Huntington: The Jay & Silent Bob Reboot Roadshow with Kevin Smith headlines on February 12; the returning Ron White hits the stage on February 14; the one-of-a-kind stylings of Gary Gulman take over on February 15; and the area's favorite son, Kevin James, is back on February 16. Tickets and more: paramountny.com and Bobby (631) 673-7300. Bobby's Back: Longtme area favorite Bobby Collins – most people know this veteran funnyman from his literally dozens of TV specials and talk show appearances – performs here often regardless of where his travels have taken him. Catch him at The Patchogue Theatre For The Performing Arts on February 15; tickets and info: patchoguetheatre.org and (631) 207-1313.

Gabby Barrett Already In 'Hall Of Fame'

Foreigner The 'Juke Box Heroes' Slate Major Tour

One of the most popular rock bands of the 1980s, Foreigner recently announced a major summer tour – with both Kansas and Europe also on the bill – dubbed the “Juke Box Heroes” tour. Tickets are at livenation.com, with area and regional dates either now on the boards or soon to go on sale. “We can’t wait to hit the road with our good friends Kansas and Europe and bring all our biggest hits to cities across the country,” said Foreigner founding member, songwriter, and lead guitarist Mick Jones. “We always have such a good time together, and combined we share some of the greatest songs in rock & roll.”

After a breakout 2019, Warner Music Nashville’s Gabby Barrett is launching into the new decade celebrating ove on a new song, “Hall of Fame.” The song, inspired by her husband Cade Foehner, admires the one you love by touting that if love had a hall of fame, their name would be in it; all in all it seems a perfect release for Valentine's Day. “I am so blessed to have found a husband that makes me feel cherished, cared for, and treasured,” said Barrett. “We wrote this song to celebrate the goodness and the details of love – the little things, the feeling of truly loving someone and feeling that in return.”

Sass Jordan: These Days, She's Rockin' The Blues

Sass Jordan has a new album, Rebel Moon Blues, available March 13 via Stony Plain Records – and she's slowly become an unabashed blues woman. “The blues has been there through my entire career,” said Jordan. “People have always said, 'You're so bluesy.' And it's true. My singing is blues-inflected. My songs use blues-type licks. I didn't do any of that on purpose. It isn't contrived. It's just me.” Co-produced by Jordan and D# (frontman for Jim Kale's 2020 version of The Guess Who), the disc features covers of blues legends and blues rockers.

Kendra Scott: Music & Fashion Merge Fashion superstar Kendra Scott has partnered with Columbia Records to launch the “Radiant” playlist, dedicated to spotlighting rising stars in female pop music. As a female entrepreneur herself, Scott is a proud supporter of aspiring female leaders. “I believe women are a force,” said Scott, “and when women join hands and support each other, they are unstoppable. With music still being a heavily male dominated industry, I am proud to give my support to these inspiring female artists on their journey to the top.” “Radiant” launched with lavish parties in New York and Los Angeles.

Sarah Mary Chadwick: Hey, 'Let's Fight'

The indescribable Sarah Mary Chadwick has released an upbeat yet lyrically downtrodden single “Let's Fight” from her new album, Please Daddy, now out everywhere. These songs are truly different; Chadwick has previously released albums on Siltbreeze, Bedroom Suck, Sinderlyn, and Rice Is Nice; this new effort has been released on Sinderlyn Records. The album is now available everywhere; find Chadwick all over social media.
