FILM: Which Of These Friday The 13th Movies Get Lucky?

My Spy Starring Dave Bautista, Kristen Schall, Ken Jeong, Chloe Coleman Directed by Peter Segal STXfilms • Opens March 13

We don't think there's any question about which of this trio of new movies will do the best at the box office ... but we've been wrong a lot. Hollywood believes that the WWE Hall Of Famer Baustisa, after his stints in the Guardians Of The Galaxy series, could very well follow Dwayne Johnson as a legit star in films – and thanks to a funny script and what those who have previewed this film claim is real chemistry between the former

wrestler and child actress Coleman, this one might, indeed, push Bautista into the stratosphere ... even without the Guardians.

Bloodshot Starring Vin Diesel Directed by David S.F. Wilson Columbia • Opens March 13 The hulking Diesel hasn't exactly been on a hot streak of late – but since this throws the big man into the comic book adaptation game, this one has a good shot at the big time. Yeah, it's perfect casting: The rippled Diesel portrays Ray Garrison, a soldier killed in action who is brought back to life as a superhero and unbeatable soldier by The RST Corporation … which has a bit more than just defeating the bad guys on its twisted corporate mind. Our take for March 14: My Spy at #1, with Bloodshot just behind it at #2 (margin of prediction error: 100 percent).

Reviews and previews by Cody Bell; photos courtesy respective film companies

The Hunt Starring Ike Barinholtz, Emma Roberts, Hilary Swank, Betty Gilpin Directed by Craig Zobel Universal • Opens March 13 We can't even guarantee this one will open: This horror satire was pulled last fall after President Trump claimed it bashes (and literally brutalizes) conservatives (the plot reportedly involves a bunch of “liberal elites” that kidnap and hunt “deplorables”). Now, in a true 1970s-style exploitation film ad campaign, Universal released a poster containing all sort of outraged quotes and diatribes about The Hunt … yet, the movie has yet to be actually viewed by anyone. Expect more snark, but either way, we must ask: What's Oscar winner Hillary Swank doing in this?

SPORTS BEAT Considering it's been almost two years since he last played a game – coupled with that crazy story of how getting hurt by a wild boar on his Florida ranch cost him at least $20 million of guaranteed salary in the final year of his contract – it's easy to reason that Yoenis Cespedes would be on his best behavior going into the 2020 campaign ... but you’d be wrong. Almost as soon as he arrived at the New York Mets Yoenis spring training camp in Port Cespedes St. Lucie, Florida, Cespedes, never the friendliest guy, informed the media he would not be speaking to reporters during the 2020 season. My first reaction: “Would Cespedes display such boorish behavior if he were playing for The New York Yankees?” The answer, of course, is that there was no way that CEO Hal Steinbrenner, general manager Brian Cashman, and manager Aaron Boone would

ever tolerate such nonsense. Their Mets counterparts – chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon, general manager Brodie Van Wagenen, and manager Luis Rojas – should have called him into a conference room and read him the riot act. My guess is that Cespedes’s agents at CAA/Roc Nation, after reaching for the antacids, must have told him that he was going to be a free agent at the end of the season and that team owners aren’t going to give lavish contracts to 35-year-old outfielders who are deemed to be head cases. Cespedes decided to end his media moratorium six days after he began it. Frankly, I was surprised Cespedes would be so concerned with the press, since spring training is the time of year when writers engage in breezy puff pieces. A good example is

how every daily paper had a beat writer compose articles about how Mets starter and Patchogue native Marcus Stroman said that he would not only have a very good 2020 season, but that he was ready to dominate. Talk is Neil obviously Walker cheap when baseball camp opens. Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen foolishly got a bit peeved when former Mets pitcher Zack Wheeler, who signed a lucrative contract with The Philadelphia Phillies tn December, complained that he didn’t hear from the Mets about a contract extension. In my book, that meant Wheeler enjoyed being part of the Mets organization.

With Bob Smith Ferrell McNeil Snow On The & Allen Johnson Roof, Champions On The Lanes: Ferrill McNeil of Bronx, New York, and Allen Johnson of Jamaica emerged as the champions at the second Senior Legends Tour (SLT) event on February 23 at Herrill Lanes in New Hyde Park. McNeil took the crown in the upper average division, earning $600 by defeating Robert Vickers of New York City, who took home $400. Johnson ($600) was the lower average champ, who defeated Paul Rourke of East Islip, who earned $400. Other top finishers were: Upper division – Larry Selzer of Westbury ($300) and Pak Wong of New York City ($250). Lower average top

finishers included Eddie Cintron of Laurelton ($300) and George Williams ($250). SLT’s next tournament is Sunday, March 29 at AMF East Meadow Lanes. To view the results and finals video of the SLT Herrill event or to sign up for the East Meadow event, visit thesltour.com. Pursuit Of Perfection: Perfect 300 games were all the rage at Herrill Lanes in New Hyde Park during the beginning of this year: Congratulations to Bill Delawski (pictured left), Danny Yi, Dom Pabellina, and Billy Lowry. Bowlers of area houses wishing to see their pefect games in this spot need only write to goodtimes.magazine@gmail.com.

Instead of graciously wishing him the best and thanking him for his service with the Mets, Van Wagenen took the low road by saying that Wheeler, thanks to the Mets medical staff, was able to cobble together two good half-seasons in 2018 and 2019, which landed him a gigantic payday 100 miles southwest of Citi Field. A trio of really good guys in baseball are

The Way Back

fighting to prolong their careers, and to do so they signed minor league contracts with teams to get an invitation to spring training. Former Mets and Yankees third baseman Todd Frazier signed a major league free agent contract with The Texas Rangers over the winter. Another Mets and Yankees

infielder Neil Walker, is in the Phillies’ camp this spring. Finally, second baseman Joe Panik, who played at St. John’s University and joined the Mets this past August after being waived by The San Francisco Giants, inked a minor league deal with The Toronto Blue Jays. The new Ben Affleck movie, The Way Back, has the star portraying Jack Cunningham, a fictional Southern California high school basketball legend in the early 1990s. Instead of enjoying a fabulous college and pro hoops career, he is forced to work in construction because of numerous poor decisions, as well as a family tragedy which exacerbated his alcohol dependency. Cunningham gets a shot at redemption when the principal at his old high school offers him a coaching opportunity. The film is not easy viewing by any means and is melodramatic in spots, but it does shine a light on mental health and chemical dependency. At the press screening, I attended, former Mets ace Dwight Gooden spoke and reveals how he faced many of the same issues Affleck’s character did. Last year, veteran sportswriter Rick Reilly

With Lloyd Carroll

wrote a book about Donald Trump’s obsession with golf, Commander In Cheat: How Golf Explains Trump (Hachette Books), in which many who spent time on the links with Trump shared their recollections. Veteran tennis and boxing scribe Mark “Scoop” Malinowski takes a similar approach with Close Encounters With Donald Trump. Malinowski gets sports figures and others to share their memories of Trump before he entered the White House. Boxers Mike Tyson and Chuck Wepner are fans, while former heavyweight champ Larry Holmes claims to have never liked him. Nick Kish, who ran the football operations of The Jacksonville Bulls, places the blame for the demise of the spring United States Football League on Trump, who wanted the league to compete with the NFL.

Umm, Umberto's: We're noted this before, but we're going to do it again: They come, they go, the chains, the mom and pops, and everything in between – but nobody beats the traditional “plain slice” at Umberto's Of New Hyde Park (633 Jericho Turnpike, (516) 437-7698). Sure, there's a lot of good pizza in these parts, don't get us wrong, but nothing else we taste matches the flavor of an Umberto's regular slice, a perfect melding of cheese, their own tangy sauce, and the always just-right crust. Television food pundits and regular walking around New Hyde Park folks are in agreement; try one slice and you'll be a regular. Cater To Your Hunger: ezCater has announced that Red Lobster has joined their catering marketplace to serve up signature items such as Wood-Grilled Chicken Taco Bars, Maine Lobster Tails, and Cheddar Bay Biscuits to businesses for the first time in its 52-year history. This marks Red Lobster's entry into the $62 billion catering market. Red Lobster is the latest national restaurant chain to join the ezCater platform. By bringing catering online, ezCater gives businesspeople a simple, reliable way to order food from more than 70,000 restaurants nationwide. APPLE SAUCE

It's A Disco Daze – Again: These days, disco culture is the stuff of legend: Dazzling mirror balls and raining glitter, unconventional fashion, and extraordinary excess – but those who were fortunate enough to experience the disco era firsthand understand the elements that came together to create an exquisite musical and cultural storm. The lovechild of young baby boomers who felt left out of sixties counterculture and the increasing polarity of New York City nightlife, disco was born on February 14, 1970. On that evening, downtown disc jockey David Mancuso hosted "Love Saves The Day," the first of many invitation-only underground dance parties at his SoHo loft apartment at 645 Broadway – parties that quickly outgrew the space before relocating to a larger venue at 99 Prince Street. From within the eye of the storm in New York City, disco soon took center stage in mainstream culture, with anthems such as Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive"; on the big screen with Saturday Night Fever, and on dance floors with hits that

Disco Is Back At Morrison Hotel Gallery crossed over – even on to rock & roll radio – and dominated the sales charts, from Van McCoy's "The Hustle" to literally dozens of other smash hits. Upon its half-centennial, “Disco At 50,” presented by Morrison Hotel Gallery in New York City, brings it all back to the place where it began, retrospecting the cosmopolitan renaissance from invite-only obscurity at Mancuso's loft to the velvet-roped phenomena that would ensue with the advent of genre goliaths like Studio 54 and Paradise Garage. On public view starting February 14, this month-long exhibition featuring photographers Bill Bernstein, Ron Galella, Lynn Goldsmith, Rose Hartman, and Allan Tannenbaum is a love letter to legendary nights and an era when exclusivity was all about inclusivity. The RSVP-only opening night of the exhibition on February 13, featured DJ Samantha Michelle, and also featured specialty cocktails, nonstop dancing, and a celebration of the joie de vivre that made the disco era an extraordinarily magical moment in music and pop culture history. It's even been said that a "dress to kill" code was strictly enforced on the night of the special event. That lavish opening night was just the beginning: The beat will go on through March 15, overlapping the March 13 opening of “Studio 54: Night Magic” at The Brooklyn Museum. Running through July 5, the exhibition will go behind the velvet rope and inside the history, social politics, and trailblazing aesthetic of the disco movement. The exhibition will combine photography, fashion, drawing, and film, as well as neverbefore-exhibited costume illustrations, set proposals, and designs to explore Studio 54's existence within the wider history of New York City. It’s ‘Nashville To Win’ For This Hot Area Act

The area-based, revived band Indulgent Lucie – comprised of Kare', Walt Willems, Tones Colonna, John Ludwig, Neil DeRiggi, and Lisa Dee – is now a blazing six-piece country/pop act that’s riding high following the release of its new single, “Nashville To Win.” Originally titled “Tip Jar Dreams,” “Nashville To Win” is the story of two musicians who travel to Nashville to make it in the music business – but what they find are grueling music sets, tough honky-tonk bars, and tip jar dreams that eventually leads them to stardom (“Bet it all on Nashville/Nashville to win).” The Northport-based group mixed genres while staying close to its country roots. Their audience has been expanding as the band performs shows throughout Long Island. Upcoming area appearances include The Warehouse in Amityville on March 12; Elliot’s in Freeport on March 28; and Napper Tandy’s in Northport on April 17. To hear, buy, or stream “Nashville To Win,” the song can be found at Spotify, Apple Music, CDBaby.com, Google Play Music, Amazon Music, and iHeart Radio.

Grand Funk Railroad

Grand Funk Railroad marks its 51st year in 2020, and the group is celebrateing with its "Some Kind Of Wonderful” tour; more dates will be announced soon, including a show in New York. Named in honor of their 1975 hit, the tour began in Lincoln, Rhode Island, on February 8. As with all classic rock bands, here' a compendium of who is in the band these days: Don Brewer (drums) and Mel Schacher (bass) lead a five-piece group that also includes guitarist Bruck Kulick (formerly of Kiss), lead singer Max Carl (38 Special), and keyboardist Tim Cashion … Burton Cummings pretty much announced on social media that he and fellow Guess Who member Randy Bachman will reunite for live performances this year; they're listed as performing at a music festival in British Columbia in August … More touring team-ups: The Charlie Daniels Band and

Rod Stewart

The Marshall Tucker Band will co-headline the “Fire On The Mountain” tour; it will stop on May 9 at The NYCB Theatre at Westbury. "We have played more shows with the MTB through the years than any other band, and have worked together for over 40 years," said Daniels. "We have so much history and so many memories and the music is so compatible that when we get together, the audience, CDB, and MTB have a big ole southern-style good time." … Rod Stewart – whose concerts are more like Las Vegas spectacles than rock shows these days, but so it goes – will bring his “A Night Of Hits” tour to sheds this summer; Cheap Trick will open these events … Journey, as always, will tour – this time with The Pretenders also on the bill this summer; they’ll have a date at Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater.

MEDIA What You're Listening To: In continued research beyond its recent 2019 "Global State of Mobile" report, Comscore uncovered additional critical insights around mobile music streaming. Comscore mobile audience insights show that mobile apps monopolize the time spent on music platforms; top music apps capture almost the entirety of total minutes for all music apps; and that paid users spend more time per month engaging with music streaming apps than free users do.This recent Comscore mobile research looked at how U.S. audiences engage with mobile music apps, including iHeartRadio, Pandora, Soundcloud, Apple Music, Spotify, and Google Play Music, discussed how their audiences vary across mobile web and app, and examined time spent by consumers – including a look at the difference between free and paid users and their tolerance for advertising. "The mobile music streaming market appears to be a classic 'winner-take-all' scenario," said Kelly Lewis, Comscore's product manager. "Most users are likely locked-in to one or two services, leaving little room for growth by smaller platforms beyond niche market offerings." Hayley Williams: Paramore Powerhouse To Unleash Solo Album

Hayley Williams has uneviled “Simmer,” the first single from the Paramore singer’s debut solo album. The track is available now; an official video – directed by Warren Fu – is streaming now via the Hayley Williams YouTube channel. Williams’ upcoming debut solo album, Petals For Armor, is set for release on May 8. “I’m so ready and so incredibly humbled to get to share this project,” said Williams, who continued: “Making it was a scary, empowering experience ... I’m in a band with my favorite musicians, so I never really feel the need to step into a role as a player when it comes to Paramore records. This project, however, benefited from a little bit of musical naïveté and rawness and so I experimented quite a bit more.” Find Hayley Williams on YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter.

THEATER for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf Public Theater At the beginning of The Public Theater’s deeply satisfying revival of Ntozake Shange’s celebratory 1976 ”choreopoem,” the late poet-playwright states her intention to “sing a black girl’s song. Sing the song of her possibilities.” Interweaving poems, dramatic monologues and AfricanLatino inspired choreography (by the ever-inventive Camille A. Brown), Shange dissects with scalpel-like precision the complex relationship between black men and black women, counterpointing men’s betrayal and abuse of women against women’s overwhelming need for a man’s love – and her own identity. Director Leah C. Gardiner, an all-female creative team (choreographer Camille A. Brown, costume designer Toni-Leslie James, scenic designer Myung Hee Cho and composer Martha Redbone) and seven actresses of great talent and presence give dramatic life to black women’s inner journey from hurt and pain to self-respect. By their

attention to one another’s stories, by a touch or a nod, they celebrate community and sisterhood.

The cast members are identified by the color of their stunning costumes (“Lady in Blue,” and so on) imprinted with images of a female relative of the individual actress. They embody the variety of the black woman’s experiences ranging from Celia Chevalier’s

portrayal of a young girl sneaking into her library’s adult reading room to discover imaginary camaraderie with Haitian leader Toussaint L’Ouverture; “Orange Is The New Black’s” Adrienne C. Moore as a high school senior who gleefully loses her virginity on graduation night; extraordinary singer Sasha Allen’s revealing the horror of an unwanted pregnancy and abortion, and the commanding Okwaui Okpokwasili as a woman demanding “I want my stuff back” from a former lover who stole more than just her physical “stuff” from her; and the moving Jayne Lawson in the harrowing and heart-rending monologue as a mother pleading with her crazed Vietnam vet lover not to drop her children from a window. Ultimately, with wit and wisdom, this show celebrates woman’s ability to survive and to discover her inner strength: “I found God in myself, and I loved Her fiercely.”

RHYTHM TRACKING

With Jimi LaLumia

Going Gaga Again: Lady Gaga is preparing to drop a new single (her first solo song in three years, below) and album shortly, and the conversation begins: "Will Top 40 radio welcome her back? Is she 'old' by the standards of radio-listening youth culture?" If it turns out to be a great record, shouldn't it be able to stand on its own? The reality is that, when "Shallow" was released as a single for Gaga's A Star Is Born soundtrack album in 2018, it was strongly resisted by hit radio because they felt that Gaga had “aged out” from their audience. The success of the film and the charttopping soundtrack Lady Gaga changed that game, and "Shallow" gradually fought its way onto the air and became a much-loved hit. The grim reality, which we have discussed here before, is that contemporary hit radio is more concerned with imagining than what the actual finished product is, so it will be interesting to see if the last of the superstars is able to claw her way back onto the airwaves once again. Is It Live, Or …?: I have mixed feelings on the concept of hologram concerts. In one regard, the idea of crowds paying money to watch an image reconstruction of an actual performer, cheering and calling for encores, strikes me as something out of a bizarre sci-fi movie. On the other hand, a Beatles or Sex Pistols concert with original members intact might be well worth the price of admission. A recent Whitney Houston hologram concert has become the subject of much heated discussion, with ticket buyers either loving or hating the final result, no middle ground to be had. As more of these shows take place in 2020, the future of the genre will finally be decided. I know many performers who no longer have the wellness to tour and perform who nonetheless would probably welcome the chance to share their legacies with new audiences. The jury will be out on this subject for a while, but I do look forward to attending a hologram concert before making a final judgement. A Cinema & Music Star Passes: I'm sad to report the death of multi-talented musician, songwriter, and filmmaker Ivan Kral, notable for his work Ivan Krall in The Patti Smith Group and with Iggy Pop in the late 1970s and early '80s. His New York City scene documentary The Blank Generation stands as the singular classic of its era. We became friends in the years that followed and worked on a few projects together; he is gone too soon, and will be missed. Photos: Ivan Krall by David Sedlecky (CC)

Johnny A.

Johnny A. Is AOK: National recording artist and guitarist Johnny A. – who has appeared in the area often in the past – is now in the midst of a fresh tour. “Most of these venues will be a first for me and I'm excited to be bringing the ‘Just Me...And My Guitars’ show to them,” said Johnny A. “I'm counting on all my friends and fans to please help me get the word out.” The current performances are dubbed “Just Me...And My Guitars: A Celebration Of The British Songbook Of The '60s,” where the bluesman takes an adventurous musical left turn with his performances to present his distinct, instrumental guitar approach for the first time in a completely “solo” intimate atmosphere, combining his arrangement instincts and guitar skills with his understanding and use of effects for a high-wire, one man performance. Catch Johnny A. live on YouTube. Big Mike Comes Down The Pike: Crescent City-based Big Mike & The R&B Kings recently released This Song’s Gor You, a merging of Chicago blues and R&B sounds with New Orleans funk for a set on Red Tint Records. It's an eclectic album that encompasses Chicago rhythm and blues with soul, funk, and some rooted Reggae. “I really think if you sit down and listen to this album, there is a little bit for everyone on here,” said Big Mike. “From great solos for people to rock out on, to great dancing tunes for the dancers, stories that so many people can relate to, and even music for the easy listener wanting to hear something while sitting down and reading a book. I hope this music stays in your collection.” Run, Forrest, Run: Guitarist/songwriter Forrest McDonald returns with a new album, Blues In A Bucket, on World Talent Records. Recorded, mixed, and mastered at Dogwood Recording & Mastering in Oxford, Georgia, with Ron Benner engineering, the effort showcases McDonald’s guitar mastery, aided and abetted by a cast of seasoned backing musicians featuring vocalist Andrew Black and special guest vocalist Becky Wright.

The Black Keys: Hitting The Road, Returning To LI

The Black Keys will launch a 35-date “Let’s Rock” summer tour, with a performance slated for August 26 at Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh. Each date on the tour will feature special guest Gary Clark Jr.; tickets are on sale now.

Lisa Mills: Soul, Blues, & A Lot More A refreshing voice on the blues scene is Lisa Mills, whose January release of her debut Melody Place Music album, The Triange, has opened ears and eyes. Originally recorded by Little Richard in the early 1970s in Muscle Shoals, Mills’ rendition of “Greenwood, Mississippi” is the first single, a tribute to the sound and feel of the great southern soul music of the 1960s and '70s. Mills recorded the track with some of the original musicians in the same studio where it was first recorded. “I wanted to make a traditional R&B/blues album that preserved the spirit of the original songs, while giving them a fresh new life and point of view,” said famed producer Fred Mollin said about the successful sessions.
