PAC TRACK HOT SARDINES JAZZ AT STALLER The Hot Sardines perform jazz in an irreverent yet soulful fashion as it was played in the era when live music was king... with a little glamour, a little grit and a lot of passion! These mischief-makers of hot jazz have been described as “potent and assured” by The New York Times and “simply phenomenal” by The Times (London). “Everything in our DNA is about connecting with the audience. That’s where we feel most at home,” says co-leader Elizabeth Bougerol, about playing live with the eight-piece band that includes one wildly percussive tap dancer. “That’s where jazz lives,” adds pianist and bandleader Evan Palazzo. “In the playing, in sharing that experience, in coming together to create a moment that won’t happen again.” They’re appearing Saturday, March 19, 2022 8:00 pm at Staller Center Recital Hall Stony Brook, NY INFO: 631-632-2787

SPORTS BEAT Baseball fans who would like to see the labor-management dispute end shouldn’t expect any substantial movement in the negotiations to happen until sometime next month, according to Mets legend and SNY broadcaster for the team, Keith Hernandez. At a Zoom press conference held by the Mets to announce the retirement of his #17 jersey, Hernandez said, “I was a team union rep for a dozen years. Based on my experience, things don’t get done until the 11th hour.” Former Mets third baseman Edgardo Alfonzo has not felt the love from his former team in recent years. Former Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen fired him in 2019 despite his managing the Brooklyn Cyclones to an NY-Penn League championship. Alfonzo was recently named the manager of the new Staten Island Ferryhawks of the Atlantic League. The Ferryhawks will be in the same division as the Long Island Ducks so this should make for a good rivalry. Betting on sports teams via mobile devices, which has long been allowed in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, became legal in New York State last month. It was reported over $150 million in bets were made during its first weekend which smartly coincided with the beginning of the NFL playoffs. Not surprisingly, a plethora of half-hour sportsbook-themed television shows are now airing in our area. One of the best I have seen is MSG Network’s “The Betting Exchange” which airs

Monday through Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The show is anchored by Hofstra alum Jeff Johnson, former Jets safety Erik Coleman, and Katie Mox, who is attractive, but more importantly, has earned her chops in the world of sports gaming, and knows of what she speaks. What I like about the show is while discussion is on betting, its hosts know how to appeal to sports fans who have no interest in risking even a dime. They have fun with sports as evidenced by guessing how many shots Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards, one of the NBA’s premier chuckers, would attempt in that night’s game versus the Knicks. They also are not afraid of poking fun at their losing wagers. Expect to see more of these “sports wagertainment” shows to pop up around the country. The New York Islanders are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, and former Newsday and current Athletic beat writer, Arthur Staple, has written the definitive history of the team with a book titled “100 Things Islanders Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die” (Triumph Books). Staple traces the team’s roots to the insurgent World Hockey Association which saw the new Nassau Coliseum as a suitable place to plant a flag and challenge the established National Hockey League. When the NHL got wind of what this upstart was planning, it agreed to place an expansion team in Nassau County.

By Lloyd Carroll Staple’s book covers the good, the bad, and the ugly. The four consecutive Stanley Cups are covered in detail; as are the lean years under incompetent general managers Mike Milbury and Garth Snow; and for the ugly, pages are devoted to John Spano who bought the team in 1996 even though he was well undercapitalized, to put it kindly. Islanders legend Denis Potvin of the infamous Madison Square Garden chant, “Potvin sucks!” wrote the forward. And yes, Staple devotes a chapter to it. Rangers fans will prefer to read Mark Messier’s new memoir, “No One Wins Alone” (Gallery Books). “The Captain” recalls the glory of the 1994 Stanley Cup-winning team and the unfortunate NHL labor lockout which immediately followed. Messier also details how MSG president Dave Checketts let him go to the Vancouver Canucks as a free agent in 1997. He acknowledged his massive error by trading for him three years later. “How long do I have to keep paying for 1994?” may rank as one of Checketts’ more infamous quotes. It appears as if the Brooklyn Nets’ “Big 3” are snake-bit. Kevin Durant will be out at least a month with a knee injury; the mercurial Kyrie Irving can only play in road games because he refuses to get vaccinated against COVID-19 and

thus is ineligible to play in New York City: and James Harden seems to have lost something. He reminds me of Deron Williams after he signed his big contract extension. Marc Malusis, who was dropped from his midday WFAN show by program director Spike Eskin, is now part of the SNY 11 p.m. “SportsNite” anchoring team, as he is rotating with Chris Williamson and Maria Marino. Television seems to suit Malusis as he is looser and more humorous than when he was doing his 10-2 show with Maggie Gray, who has shifted to an afternoon on the CBS Sports Radio Network. Brandon Tierney and former Giants running back Tiki Barber replaced Malusis and Gray last month and there is an increase in energy. Tierney is a New York radio veteran who is not reticent about giving his opinions and yet never comes off as an arrogant know-it all. The New York Yankees became the first Major League Baseball organization to hire a female manager to skipper one of their farm teams when they hired Rachel Balkovec to helm the Tampa Tarpons.

Bassist Michael Bisio has earned just praise for his textured solo performances as well as collaborations with the likes of veteran multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee; then there is the bassist’s leadership of such groups as his everintriguing trio with cornetist Kirk Knuffke and cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm. But it’s perhaps Bisio’s 13-year membership in the Matthew Shipp Trio that has earned him widest renown, with the bassist having toured on both sides of the Atlantic with Shipp along with recording more than 10 albums with the pianist. Now we can turn to Matt Shipp for the keenest insights into the bassist’s newest project, the Michael Bisio Quartet, which features the leader alongside virtuoso peers Mat Maneri (viola), Karl Berger (vibraphone) and Whit Dickey (drums). Shipp penned the liner notes to the quartet’s debut album, MBefore, to be released by Dickey’s TAO Forms imprint (via AUM Fidelity) on March 25, 2022.

Featuring dozens of concerts, LONG PLAY also showcases a dense network of pioneering music venues in Brooklyn – with performances at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Roulette, Public Records, Littlefield, Mark Morris Dance Center, The Center for Fiction, outdoor events at The Plaza at 300 Ashland, and more. Festival passes and more venue information is available at www.longplayfestival.org.

For those who’ve survived the Covid-19 pandemic, the last two years have been transformative. If we’re fortunate, we have assessed our losses, which can range from personal loved ones, health, and financial securities as well as our gains, which can include a renewed sense of purpose, deeper appreciation for life, and a keen acknowledgment of self-resilience and spirituality. Veteran tenor and soprano saxophonist and composer, Azar Lawrence taps into the latter with his new album, New Sky, a defiantly optimistic musical soundtrack – co-produced by him, James Saez and Tracy Hannah – that focuses on the benefits that we’ve received since the pandemic began. With an illustrious career that stretches more than half a century, Lawrence has performed with numerous jazz titans that include pianists Horace Tapscott and McCoy Tyner; trumpeters Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, and Woody Shaw; percussionist James Mtume; and drummers Elvin Jones and Billy Higgins. The Los Angeles-born Lawrence, however, has never been confined by conventional genre categories. His instrumental and songwriting work with iconic soul singers, Chuck Jackson, Roberta Flack, Marvin Gaye, and Phyllis Hyman; and the R&B/jazz juggernaut ensemble, Earth, Wind & Fire is just as indelible.

BROOKLYN POST-PUNK QUARTET SAVAK ALESSI BROS. “EDEN ROC” The Alessi Brothers’ timeless melodies have remained ethereal in American popular music, and have grown even more beloved across the globe, garnering nearly 50 million listens and averaging 350K monthly listeners on Spotify. Take for instance their hit song “Seabird,” the gentle tune is a favorite of British born superstar Harry Styles, as he featured the track on his Apple Music “at home” playlist to endure the pandemic. “Seabird” was also used during the credits of Taika Waititi’s film “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” and in the new comedy-drama series “Resident Alien”. Additionally, their tune “Do You Feel It” was recently sampled by The xx on “Say Something Loving”. The duo have just released their latest pop single, “I’m In Love,” which is the first single off the upcoming album “Eden Roc.” The LennonMcCartney original was penned during The Beatles’ early days, but never recorded for official release. Brooklyn post-punk mainstays SAVAK announced their fifth album, Human Error / Human Delight, which will be released on April 15, 2022 via Ernest Jenning Record Co. in conjunction with the band’s own Peculiar Works. Recently the band released the video for searing album opener “No Blues No Jazz.” The video debuted via BrooklynVegan. The band also announced a run of U.S. tour dates beginning this March, which will see them performing at SXSW alongside stops in Boston, Philadelphia, Washington DC and more. SAVAK is the two-headed beast of Sohrab Habibion and Michael Jaworski, with Matt Schulz on drums. Jaworski and Habibion have been sharing singing and songwriting duties since the band’s inception in 2015, both taking turns singing their songs while playing guitar and other various instruments. Though SAVAK’s members have done time in bands like Obits, Edsel, Holy Fuck and more, their current outfit feels like the true culmination of their songwriting powers.

TECHNOBEAT

By Richard Joseph Branciforte

Boogie T

Welcome back, welcome back! Hope you’ve all been well since I last left you and that you have gotten to check out some of the music and shows I told ya about. You know what time it is. Strap in and get ready for a fun month ahead of you. Lots of amazing tours are coming through New York in the next month and I could probably spend all my time just going through them. So, let’s get to it! On Feb 18th and 19th Subtronics with be taking his Fractal Tour and stopping by Avant Gardner with Boogie T, Level Up, Ace Aura, and Guppi. Subtronics has recently released his first full length album, “Fractals”, and is hopping around the country bringing his unique stage production and signature sound. He’s been on the up and up for a while and he’s finally getting the recognition he deserves. The supporting acts are top tier and Boogie T is one of my favorites for his use of guitar both in his songs and live. Boogie T also has a very special wonky sound and loves to throw a bit of comedy into his songs, which gives them a little extra bit of personality. Check this one out if you can! Next up we have Papadosio at Brooklyn Bowl on Feb 19th. Papadosio is a little bit of everything. Somewhere between rock, jazz, and electronic, we get “space rock” as a genre. This is the place to go if you’re looking to groove and get down all night. For a different vibe, you can check out Vini Vici on Feb 26th at The Tent at Avant Gardner. This Israeli duo are masters in their realm; psytrance. Fast-paced energy and beats mixed with awe inspiring lighting makes psytrance shows something of their own category. And no better group to see do it than Vini Vici. Now, take the tempo of psytrance and cut it in half and you get the speed and wubs that come with a Rezz show. She will be stopping for two nights at Ter-

minal 5 on March 4th and 5th. You’ve all heard me talk about Rezz plenty, so I won’t get too crazy… She has a stellar visual experience created specifically for this tour and her new album, “Spiral”. And each night has a different lineup! First night she is playing with Wreckno, Kasablanca, and A Hundred Drums. Night two she is joined by Epro, Of the Trees, and Canabliss. Check this out people!! Finally, on March 12th, the Wakaan man himself, Liquid Stranger, will be making a stop at Terminal 5 to bring his Balance Tour to the Big Apple with Mersiv and others by his side. I can’t speak highly enough about Wakaan label and the vision Liquid Stranger has for his music, his team, and the artists who join him. Every set of his is so different and you never know what you’re going to get when you see him live. Add on to that Mersiv to bring some deep bass, both heavy and vibey, and you have a winning combo. Then, throw in Mize, Smoakland, and Redrum on the lineup and this is a show you need to be at. Your mind will be blown both musically and visually. Whew! Hope you take advantage of everything coming your way. Now, for new music I just have one track for you. “Know You Better” by Barely Alive, XO ELIZA, and Drew Seeley really has some cross genre and impressive composition to it. When the song starts off, it feels like it’s

an 80’s disco song. You think to yourself: “This is a Barely Alive song”? Once we get a bit of those vibes, the song seamlessly transitions into really mesmerizing dubstep with plenty of sounds that feel different and play their part in the song just perfectly. Once you’re done with that, make sure you stop over and listen to all of Subtronics new album. It truly is a masterpiece and really hits in all the right ways. That’s it for me! Keep raging my friends and hit me up with anything at richiegtechno@gmail.com.

FREE LISTING FOR YOUR BAND SHENANDOAH 35TH ANNY TOUR

Legendary country group Shenandoah is hitting the tour trail to commemorate 35 years since its inception. The tour includes stops in Indio, Calif. (Stagecoach), Fort Worth, Tex. (Billy Bob’s), Albuquerque, N. Mex. (Balloon Fiesta Park), Hot Springs, Ark. (Magic Springs), Shipshewana, Ind. (Blue Gate Theatre), Nevada, Miss. (Bushwhacker Days), McMinnville, Ore. (Yamhill County Fair) and more. “To believe we’d still be in the music business, as ever changing as it is, would only come to me in one form: the country music fan base,” says Shenandoah frontman Marty Raybon. “It’s a wonderful thing to experience while looking out over an audience where the age span is so wide. It is most humbling.” Concertgoers coast-to-coast can expect to hear the classic Shenandoah tunes that launched the band into stardom in the ‘80s and ‘90s: “The Church on Cumberland Road,” “Sunday in the South,” “Two Dozen Roses,” “Next to You, Next to Me,” and many more. For more information on dates, venues and tickets, visit shenandoahband.com.

ROBBY JOHNSON’S “ALIVE RIGHT NOW” Country star Robby Johnson’s new 7-song album, Alive Right Now, is the vibe the world needs right now. From the first track, “Night Like This” to the closer, “It All Starts Tonight,” the Nashville-based singer/songwriter’s latest effort leaves you feeling uplifted, optimistic, and ready to grab a beer and hit your favorite watering hole for a little two-stepping with someone you love. Musically, Alive Right Now is a love letter to the eclectic mix of music Johnson is inspired by, including country pop (“Night Like This”), country rock (“Alive Right Now”), reggae (“Drinkin’ Beer”), folk-country (“Whiskey Woman”), traditional country (“If I Ever Was a Cowboy”), and even a nod to Bryan Adams’ “Summer of 69” on “It All Starts Tonight.” “There’s really something for everyone — the girls, the guys, the rockers, and the cowboys. I wrote it with the live audience in mind and can’t wait to play these songs on stage,” he adds.

KENTUCKY GENTLEMEN SULTRY SINGLE Country/soul duo The Kentucky Gentlemen shared their latest single “Whatever You’re Up For”. Co-produced by songwriter/producer Chris Sligh (Rascal Flatts) and Grammy-nominated producer Matt McClure (Lee Brice, Dylan Scott), the new single is a sultry, catchy-as-hell country bop that combines the duo’s earliest influences of ‘90s country and R&B. Along with the new song, the pair shares an accompanying music video that was featured at Wide Open Country, who called it “an irresistible country jam that makes for the perfect first date soundtrack.” Hailing from Versailles, KY, The Kentucky Gentlemen is the twinbrother duo of Brandon and Derek Campbell. The pair have sung together since childhood, delivering the kind of instinctual familial harmonies only siblings can share. After spending time apart in college, the two knew they needed to return to their roots and relocated to Nashville to pursue music. The Kentucky Gentlemen will hit the road with The Black Opry Revue performing in Chicago, Atlanta and New York City. More info is available here: thekygentlemen.com/shows

WOMEN WHO ROCK Luna Li

Village folk scene, interpreting traditional material, blues standards, and the songs of her contemporaries (including Tim Hardin, Fred Neil, and Richard Tucker, whom she later married). In the decades following her death, a slew of artists would name Dalton as an influence, including Lucinda Williams, Nick Cave, Courtney Barnett, and Adele.

LUNA LI RELEASES DEBUT ALBUM Korean-Canadian multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, composer, and producer, Luna Li, announced her intricate debut album, Duality, to be released March 4th, 2022 via In Real Life (Live, Peggy Gou, CLIP) as well as a headline North American tour. “Silver Into Rain” is a thudding heartbeat of a song. Psychedelic and dreamlike, scattered with gorgeous moments - the laid back but totally shredder guitar solos are what make this track extra special. Luna Li shares, “Silver Into Rain” is about longing to become a better self.” Her forthcoming debut album Duality (featuring Jay Som, Dreamer Isioma, and beabadoobee) wrestles otherworldly ambitions to the ground, and embraces the notions of vulnerability and identity in order to better understand the collective. Capable of both detonating an incendiary riff or slipping into the splendor of celestial strings, the album’s power lies in its most delicate moments.

KAREN DALTON 50TH ANNY RELEASE On the heels of the premiere for the acclaimed documentary (co-produced by LITA), Karen Dalton: In My Own Time the anniversary celebration from LITA features a variety of releases (including an expanded album release, In My Own Time (50th Anniversary Edition) (due out March 25th), featuring previously unreleased live performance audio, plus alternate studio takes, and contributions by Nick Cave and Devendra Banhart in the liner notes; along with a separate 7" digital single. In My Own Time is a true masterpiece by one of music’s most mysterious, enigmatic, and enduringly influential artists; featuring Dalton’s interpretations of songs such as “Are You Leaving for the Country,” “When a Man Loves a Woman,” “Katie Cruel,” and her posthumously recognized signature performance of “Something on Your Mind.” Armed with a long-necked banjo and a 12-stringed guitar, the Oklahoma-raised Dalton (1937-1993) set herself apart from her peers with her distinctive, world-weary vocals. In the early ‘60s, she became a fixture in the Greenwich

NEW ALBUM BY SILVIA TANCREDI On January 19th, Silvia Tancredi’s third album “LOVE” was released on the main streaming platforms (Tilt Music Production / The Orchard). Among the singles of the tracklist already known to the public stand out such as “True Love”, “Making a Way” and “Indescribable”. The artistic production is by Gigi Rivetti. MAGGIE GENTLY “WORRIED” Maggie Gently (she/her) is a San Franciscobased indie songwriter with a fondness for wild schemes and intimate gestures. Maggie is a queer woman whose identity is important to her and the

community she creates and participates in. Maggie Gently’s music is melody-driven and heartfelt — a big-city indie rock fascination with an unmistakable emo accent. Her songs are about how making decisions for your own mental health can feel like a matter of survival. Her debut EP Good Cry (May 28, 2020, Brace Cove Records) and 2020 singles Where My Time Went and Bitter Pills (Common Ground Collective) explored heartbreak, attempts at healing, learning things the hard way, establishing boundaries, and protecting your heart. Her new album Peppermint (arriving in 2022) peers around the edges of trauma for a new glimpse at what growth could look like. With songs about eternal questions of commitment and love and the terrifying possibility of being vulnerable and known, this album is about trusting something enough to let yourself get swept away. Maggie Gently’s music is inspired by bands like Snail Mail and Lala Lala, Tancred, and Clairo. Maggie also finds inspiration in Meg Hayertz’ “Make It, Mean It” tarot-focused guided meditations, lesbian romance novels, and the Enneagram.

Josienne Clarke

JOSIENNE CLARKE WORKHORSE Award-winning singer, songwriter and producer Josienne Clarke has shared ‘Workhorse’, the second cut to be taken from her forthcoming EP I Promised You Light. ‘Workhorse’ is one of the most experimental tracks of Clarke’s career to date, with Sharon Van Etten and Sylvan Esso being the song’s musical touchstones. “This is the most joyous one on [the new EP], to me,” Clarke says of the song which she describes as a “weird dance acoustic mashup.” The song’s video, by Alec Bowman-Clarke, sees the artist roller-skating at a silent disco to emphasize the sheer joy of the track. “It’s just me in a massive room with loads of disco lights with silent disco headphones on just messing about to my own positivity anthem.” I Promised You Light follows up from Clarke’s critically acclaimed 2021 LP, A Small Unknowable Thing, an emotionally charged album bubbling with courage and defiance. The EP’s recording took place over a four-day period in London, where, for the first time since lockdown, Clarke was able to get into Hackney Road Studios in London with her band. Clarke says after producing her last virtually from afar, she went into this feeling more certain. “I was more confident this time because I’d done it before and it worked. I felt able to experiment more and just getting to work in a room with other musicians again after lockdown buoyed me further I think...I’d missed that!”

RHYTHM TRACKING

With Jimi LaLumia

TOP 40 RADIO Since the dawn of rock and roll, Top 40 radio has been the driving force; the success of Elvis Presley was the key moment when the transistor radio became a teenager’s best friend. Speed mouthed d.j.s were suddenly stars; Alan Freed coined the phrase ‘rock and roll’ and became as big a star as the artists whose music he played; others followed; Murray the K, Cousin Brucie, Wolfman Jack. The true star was Top 40 radio itself; the jingles, the contests; the hits countdown show (what’s #1 this week?) True classic Top 40 brought the record biz to heights that didn’t seem possible; acts like The Beatles certainly helped. The format thrived through the 60’s and well into the 70’s, when it mellowed out, abadoning teens in favor of housewives, abandoning fun energy records for bland ‘adult contemporary’ wallpaper/elevator muzak, and by the end of the 70’s, the concept seemed dead and buried; the salvation was a dj working in Florida named Scott Shannon, a true Top 40 advocate who came to New York in early August of 1983 with Z100, a full force classic revamp of the format, vowing to bring WHTZ’s ratings from “Worst To First”, and in one ratings period, he did just that. Upon his arrival, New York columnists and writers said it would fail, that New York was “an urban market”, it could never happen. Only one writer in a New York area publication was on Shannon’s side from Day One, proclaiming that it would work. That one writer was me (I’ve been writing for Good Times since the days when it was called Action World.) I called the Morning Zoo show, wound up on the air quite frequently with Scott and the “Morning Zoo” gang, and wrote features about them in several different publications, and as a result I was invited to participate / interviewed) for the new documentary film “Worst To First”, which details that historic rise. Mitchell Stuart has produced a great tribute to Shannon and Z100, and I’m proud to be included alongside Elvis Duran (who I used to haunt in the afternoon to promote Jayne County gigs), Jon Bon Jovi, Debbie Gibson,Taylor Dayne and so many others that are part of the history of Z100. I’m honored to be the Long Island representative;watch for ‘Worst To First’ on “VOD (Video On Demand), Direct TV, Amazon Prime, etc. It’s a classic New York success story.

SCORPIONS SINGLE “ROCK BELIEVER” Commenting on the advance release of the title track of their latest album, due out on February 25, Klaus Meine, both singer and author of the lyrics, says, “Over the years, we’ve heard people say lots of times that rock is dead. But there are still millions of rock believers out there all over the world that prove them wrong. Our fans are the best in the world. We’ll see you someday somewhere out there, because we’re Rock Believers, just like you.” Meine says, “The new material sees us return to our roots. We simply wanted to reactivate the original SCORPIONS’ DNA — great riffs, strong melodies. We tried to transport that live feel to the studio with all five of us playing in one room again at last. Having Mikkey Dee in the band is like a shot of fresh energy and real fun.” “We had already started to talk about a new album back in 2018,” recalls Rudolf Schenker. The single cover was designed by Klaus Voormann, Grammy winner (“Best Record Cover 1966”) and also creator of the artwork of the award-winning Beatles album Revolver. In March and April 2022, the band are set to perform at the Planet Hollywood Resorts & Casino in Las Vegas as part of their residency, followed by a European tour.
