VANESSA CUTI AT THEODORE’S BOOKS

Theodore’s Books, located in Oyster Bay and established by former Congressman Steve Israel in 2021, presents an evening with debut novelist and Long Island’s own, Vanessa Cuti, where she will discuss her new thriller, The Tip Line, on Tuesday, April 18th at 7 p.m. at Theodore’s Books.

Join Vanessa as she discusses her new thriller inspired by the Gilgo Beach Killer and her time working for the Suffolk County Police department tip line.

The Tip Line is a novel about Virginia Carey, an eager to get married, thirty-year-old, who lands a job as an operator at a police tip line, where she thinks finding a husband will be easy. But just as Virginia’s plans begin to fall into place and she can almost picture a ring on her finger, she answers a call from Verona—a mysterious woman who provides a tip about four bodies on a remote local beach. Verona, a sex worker, also gives

Virginia details on sordid and raucous parties attended by law enforcement officers. Then comes an explosive tip: Verona thinks it’s a police officer who is responsible for the killings. Virginia realizes that the key to solving the case is ultimately in her hands. The tip line will reveal the truth about those murders. So long as Virginia is willing to hear it. This event is free and open to the public. Registration is appreciated, but not required. Register at https://www.theodoresbooks.com/event/vanessa-cuti-9781639102648

ANIMATED GIFS BY CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS

As part of its installation series spotlighting animated GIFs, Museum of the Moving Image presents Refreshing the Loop, a new iteration that places artists who have been widely known for their GIFs for more than two decades in conversation with those who have gained notable popularity in the last two years. The series opens on April 21 with

These three pairings place the artists’ practice and catalogue of works in dialogue, comparing and contrasting their experiences with the file format and the evolving communities that have developed around it. Refreshing the Loop is organized by Associate Curator of Media Arts Regina Harsanyi, in collaboration with the artists in choosing a selection of works from one another that resonates with them personally. Each artwork, along with recorded discussions between the paired artists, will be on view in the passenger elevator, online, and at GIPHY.com for three months at a time.

Harsanyi states: “After 35 years, animated GIFs remain a thriving medium in internet culture. From their use in bulletin board systems and Netscape 2.0 to online communities like Surf Clubs, Tumblr, and the rise of GIPHY, a new generation of artists are now gaining acclaim for their work within the constraints of a 256-color palette.

The titles on the RSD 2023 Official List will be released at participating record stores as part of their celebration of Record Store Day, April 22. You can choose to view the List on our website, with added detail and artwork, or you can print out a PDF that can be used as a wishlist or shopping guide.

RECORD STORE DAY DOES NOT SELL THE RELEASES. THERE IS NO WEBSITE WHERE THESE CAN BE PRE-ORDERED. Please use the Participating Store Search to find a store near you and contact them directly to find out how they’re participating and celebrating Record Store Day. Stores in the US may choose to sell releases online start-

ing Sunday, April 23.

There are three categories on our List:

EXCLUSIVES: These titles are physically released only at indie record stores.

RSD FIRST: These titles are found first at indie record stores but may be released to other retailers or webstores at some point in the future.

SMALL RUN/REGIONAL TITLES:

These titles are either regionally based and sold at specific stores, or are press runs under 1000, which means they may be harder to find at record stores around the country. The majority of the titles on this section of the List are Small Run titles; any title that’s regionally based and most likely to be found at specific stores will have that called out in the description, which can be found on the web-based version of the List.

Things to know and remember:

*Record Store Day does not give or sell the releases to participating stores. Each indie record store makes their own buying decisions and may choose to bring in some titles and not others.

*The titles on the List are limited in number, as are most things created for special time periods or exclu-

sive to certain retailers. This means a store may not get all copies they wanted or that a store may sell out of a release before you are able to purchase it. (NOTE: This is the US website for Record Store Day. The pressing runs listed on our site are the number available in the US. Worldwide numbers are sometimes found in the description of a specific title, when we are given that information.)

*As we said above, this is the US website, and the titles listed here are offered to US record stores. Many other countries participate in Record Store Day and RSD Drops and many record stores in those countries may have some of these releases. Check

with your local record store if you’re not in the US. (NOTE: for all kinds of reasons, some titles may be offered and available in some countries but not others. Record Store Day has no control over that.) *The List of titles may change. Titles may be added, titles may drop off, information may be amended. Record Store Day does not own or produce the releases (with the exception of those we create ourselves.) The information on each title has been provided to us by labels and distributors and is correct to the best of our knowledge.

*Speaking of changes: everyone is still going through them right now, including your local record store employees. They are doing everything they can to get you the titles you want, but some things, like pressing plant emergency quarantines, or part-time new shipping facility workers learning from their mistakes or a boat blocking the Suez canal, are beyond their control and LEGITIMATELY MAY AFFECT THEIR ABILITY TO GET YOU YOUR RECORDS. Let’s all be nice and patient and understanding, especially if we’re talking about Days or titles meant to celebrate and support indie record stores. More info at recordstoreday.com

Sal Licata has carved out a nice career as a pundit for SNY programming, and as an overnight host on WFAN. He has shown he can be a cool, calm, and collected host on SNY’s daily 6 PM show, “Baseball Night in New York.” A few hours later, he can turn into a screaming maniac on his overnight radio shows.

Last month, Licata caught the attention of sports media digital sites Barstool Sports and Awful Announcing. They were writing about a caller by the name of Ross who blamed Licata for the Mets losing the National League East title. On May 31st, Licata confidently declared the NL East was over when the Mets had a 10.5 game lead over the Atlanta Braves.

Ross called Licata’s declaration “the kiss of death.” Licata’s colleague, Gregg Giannotti, who is one half of the popular “Boomer & Gio” morning drivetime show on WFAN, also had a run-in last month with a caller, “Bill from Connecticut,” who made fun of him for not “sucking it up” when he discussed his panic anxiety for which he seeks therapy. Gio made it clear having psychological issues is nothing to be ashamed of, and gave it right back to Bill. When his partner, the pride of East Islip, Boomer Esiason walked out of the studio when Giannotti was discussing his battles with panic disorder. Gio then proceeded to give it to him on the air as well. Good for Gio!

There is little doubt boxing has long benefitted from the “Rocky” film franchise since its inception

BOWLING

TAYO SCORES A KO AT LIGBT MAJOR

The Long Island Generations Bowling Tour (LIGBT), sponsored by Storm, hosted its annual two-day Spring Major at Herrill Lanes on March 26 - and crowned Tayo Farinu of Cambria Heights as the 2023 Champion. Farinu earned the $1,500 top prize by defeating Denis Mendelson of Levittown, 222-205, in the final shootout. Mendelson earned $750 for second; placing third was Andrew Mienkiewicz of Dix Hills, with a 199 worth $500. Rounding out the top four was Jenn Bochicchio of Selden, with a 161 score that earned $400. The Abbey Road by Kegel oil pattern proved challenging, as all of the shootout finalists had at least two open frames.

Rob Longiaru and Joe Cavaliere earned the $2,500 top prize at the LIGBT’s previous event, The Ultimate Doubles tournament, hosted by AMF Wantagh Lanes. The duo shot a 2,018 four game total to win by 52 pins. There was a tie for second place with a 1,966 total was earned by the teams of Jordan Ockimey and Keith Bergstrom and Terrence Taylor

in 1976. The latest descendent is “Creed III,” and it is the first without an appearance from Sylvester Stallone.

Michael B. Jordan returns as Adonis Creed, the tough but tender heavyweight champion who has retired from the ring. Adonis’s world is rocked when a childhood buddy, Damien Anderson (Jonathan Majors), who was a Golden Gloves champ, returns

from prison after serving an 18-year prison sentence for pulling a gun at an LA convenience store which involved both of them.

While the acting and boxing on the parts of both Jordan and Majors are terrific, the script leaves a lot to be desired. We never learn what caused the fateful incident which occurred nearly 20 years ago. Filmgoers are supposed to believe real heavyweight boxers, who have trained in gymnasiums against tough foes for years, cannot handle a boxer who

and Eric Taylor Sr.. Each team earned $1,200 for their performances.

Coming up for the LIGBT: The summer season schedule, which is now available at ligbtour.com. Log on to the website to enter upcoming tournaments, or call the LIGBT hotline at (702) 530-0708.

...BUT, HELLO BOWLERO

Bowlero Corporation, which operates many establishments on Long Island, completed the acquisition of The Big Event in New Jersey on February 14. This announcement marked the company’s first completed acquisition in calendar year 2023, out of a robust pipeline of remaining acquisitions.

Brett Parker, President & Chief Financial Officer of Bowlero Corp. stated, “Today’s announcement illustrates our continued commitment to expanding our unit base and simultaneously improving our average unit volumes.”

GOODBYE HERRILL...?

At press time, there was some sudden (and quite unexpected) news as the website Bowlage.com reported that the venerable Herrill Lanes in New Hyde Park was likely on the verge of being sold to the area company that owns the Bowl 360 chain. As we went to press, we had not been able to confirm this report, but stay tuned as we hope to bring you the full scoop about Herrill, long a favorite of league bowlers in Nassau County.

The Big Event is located in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, 20 miles outside of Philadelphia. The 36-lane center features billiards, ping pong, shuffleboard, arcade games, and VIP private event rooms. The acquisition of The Big Event marks the Company’s 10th location in the state of New Jersey. This center opened under Bowlero Corp. management on February 17.

“We look forward to welcoming this center to our growing national footprint and, as always, we remain focused on growth while continuing to prioritize a world-class experience for our guests,” said Parker. The corporation also owns The Professional Bowlers Association (PBA).

operates via prison rules as opposed to those set down by the Marquis de Queensberry.

The real boxing world is having a big event on Saturday, April 22 when Gervonta Davis, a protegee of Floyd Mayweather, is taking on Ryan Garcia, who is represented by Oscar de la Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, in a twelve-round bout at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Both fighters are undefeated, which is boxing golden currency. The fight will air on Showtime Pay-Per-View.

The Mets will have 23 giveaways during the 2023 season. My favorite one is a bobblehead with sound of longtime radio voice Howie Rose. I am not sure if you will have to pull a string but you can bet it will

say “Put it in the books!” That, of course, is Rose’s signature expression when the Mets win. It should be noted Mets losses wind up being put in the books as well although he, of course, never brings that up. Rose will be inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame this summer.

Jim Nantz was a bit emotional in a CBS Sports Zoom media call to promote NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. This was Nantz’s last year calling March Madness games after 40 years of doing so. Ian Eagle will replace him as the lead voice of the tournament. Nantz will remain the top announcer of CBS for NFL telecasts. Nantz will be honored with a lifetime achievement award by Broadcasting & Cable Magazine in a May 3rd ceremony.

Nantz’s NBC counterpart, Mike Tirico, knows how to keep busy as well. He will be calling this year’s Indy 500 along with Danica Patrick.

Amazon Prime, which spent big bucks to land the NFL Thursday night package, is continuing to

mine the world of sports for programming. It is now showing, “Reggie,” a documentary about, of course, Hall of Fame slugger Reggie Jackson. It was made with Jackson’s cooperation.

Not to be outdone, Apple TV+ has just debuted a two-part documentary from Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney titled “Boom! Boom! The World vs Boris Becker.” Becker was one of the greatest tennis players of the 20th century. He got into financial trouble in retirement as he was convicted in a German court of tax evasion in 2002.

Mets third baseman Eduardo Escobar had a rough 2022 season, although he was one of the few Mets players to be productive during September when the team hit the skids. Escobar attributed his falloff in offensive production to family issues, which he says have happily been resolved.

Escobar treated his Mets teammates to dinner at the Brazilian steakhouse, Fogo de Chao in Washington, DC last May. The occasion was reaching the ten-year service milestone for Major League Baseball which means he will get the maximum pension at age 55. When I was watching an Apple TV+ telecast of a Mets-Nationals game last year, the announcers spoke of Escobar’s fondness for Fogo de Chao which has been expanding across the United States. He will be happy to know there is a new Fogo de Chao in Elmhurst, roughly three miles from Citi Field.

JUDY COLLINS PERFORMS WILDFLOWERS

In her 6th decade as an artist—and as prolific as ever, having released her 55th album earlier this year— Grammy Award-winning singersongwriter Judy Collins is taking a rare moment to look back on her landmark 1967 album, Wildflowers. The cultural icon will perform an exclusive series of shows bringing to full bloom her chamber-folk masterwork performing with String Section. The show will also feature Judy’s most beloved songs from her decades-spanning oeuvre.

Wildflowers is Gold-certified and landed No. 5 on the Billboard Pop Albums charts—it remains Judy’s highest-charting album. The meditative 10-song Wildflowers is one of the first orchestral pop albums of the 1960s, and it was a milestone entry in Judy’s career because it featured her first three original compositions, “Since You Asked,” “Sky Fell,” and “Albatross.

PURE PRAIRIE LEAGUE AT SUFFOLK THEATER

From their beginnings in mid-Sixties Ohio as a group of friends playing cover tunes to the presentday unit featuring founding member/pedal-steel innovator John David Call, veteran bassist Mike Reilly, propulsive drummer Scott Thompson and guitar ace Donnie Clark, Pure Prairie League continues to embellish the rich 43-year history of one of Country-Rock’s pioneering forces.

Their eponymous first album – featuring the cover that introduced fans to PPL’s trademark cowpoke “Sad Luke” – has been hailed as a “major early influence in the emerging popularity of CountryRock music.” As crisp and clean as spring water and as comfortable as a well-worn cowboy shirt, Pure Prairie League still brings it all back home...

They’re appearing Thursday June 1st at the Suffolk Theater 8 p.m. Tickets are $59$69. For more information on upcoming shows, visit TheSuffolk.org or call the Box Office at 631-727-4343

SHELÉA RETURNS TO STALLER CENTER

“Relied upon for vocal duties by David Foster, Stevie Wonder, and Quincy Jones, Sheléa had all the range, skill, and technique to carry Aretha Franklin’s challenging repertoire,” and now she brings that repertoire and so much more to the Staller Center in an intimate evening on April 22.

With widespread comparison to the vocal expertise of legendary Whitney Houston and the piano prowess of Alicia Keys, it’s no surprise that artist and actress, Sheléa has garnered co-signs from the likes of Stevie Wonder, Mary J. Blige, Missy Elliott, David Foster, Queen Latifah, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Hudson, Quincy Jones, and more.

“Sheléa brought down the house here at Staller in 2021,” says Staller Center Director Alan Inkles, “Our audience was thrilled to hear her, and I had request after request to bring her back again, and soon!” Here’s your chance to see this vocalist who can seamlessly blend traditional pop, jazz, R&B, and soul. Sheléa brings a contemporary edge to classics and a classic touch to contemporary pop standards.

HARRY ALLEN QUARTET RETURNS

The Harry Allen Quartet, a Jazz Loft favorite, will be returning on Friday, April 21 when Allen brings his signature tenor saxophone sound to the stage. Allen is best known for his work with jazz greats John Colianni, Dori Caymmi, Keith Ingham, John Pizzarelli, and Bucky Pizzarelli.

The Harry Allen Quartet includes Harry Allen, tenor saxophonist, Steve Ash, piano, Mike Karn, bass and Bryan Carter, drums. Recently, Allen released a new single called, “Can’t Find the Words” accompanied with a piano, while he beautifully plays the saxophone.

Allen has recorded over 70 CDs as a leader and many more as a sideman. Three of Harry’s CDs have won Gold Disc Awards from Japan’s Swing Journal Magazine. The show starts at 7 p.m. and tickets can be purchased at https://www. thejazzloft.org. The Jazz Loft is located at 275 Christian Ave, Stony Brook, NY 11790. ’or more Information visit https://www.thejazzloft.org.

DRUMMER STEVE SMITH RELEASE

“Emergence” kicks off TIME FLIES with a powerful and intricate composition by keyboard player Manuel Valera, a Grammy nominated artist and Guggenheim Fellow. Steve Smith’s drum performance invokes the spirit of Tony Williams during his “Believe It” period. Bud Powell’s “Tempus Fugue-It” requires a high degree of technical facility to play the up-tempo piece in a relaxed, swinging way and the new incarnation of Vital Information has the chops to play this classic with ease.

“Time Flies” is an improvised groove piece featuring saxophone guru George Garzone. Manuel Valera’s sophisticated reworking of “Darn That Dream” is a showcase for the brush mastery of the Vital Information bandleader.

On Monk’s “Ugly Beauty,” the trio takes an odd-time (5/4) and electric approach with Valera featured on Fender Rhodes. Cole Porter’s “What Is This Thing Called Love?” starts with a sax & drum duet and morphs into a 7/4 vamp, setting up a highly original take on the melody. The song ends in classic Vital Information style with a tour de force drum solo from Smith. The album concludes with a mysterious and moody composition by bassist Janek Gwizdala, with Smith using his 34” Zildjian gong as a ride cymbal and probing solos by all three band members.

RETRO TRILOGY...

ALLISON ADAMS TUCKER

In today’s streaming world, the process to broadcast the news about an artist’s forthcoming album involves a series of catchy preview singles that leads to the actual release date of the full collection. In the case of internationally acclaimed jazz singer Allison Adams Tucker, she puts a unique twist on the model. Instead of introducing one tune, the vibrant and lucent vocalist releases three full EPs (six songs each) from January to March in anticipation of the April 14 release of her fourth CD, RETRO Trilogy on Allegato Music.

Each EP zeroes in on the three decades of her evolved freedom of musical expression: the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s—from Cat Stevens to Paul Simon, from Tears for Fears to Prince, from Beck to Elizabeth Fraser with Massive Attack. The full album is a three-part “old school meets the digital age” jazz collection of re-imagined covers of songs that informed Adams Tucker as she blossomed into a popular singer and bandleader.

Recorded in NY and produced by Matt Pierson in 2019, RETRO Trilogy features the San Diego-based Adams Tucker assembling an A-team support band that includes Kevin Hays (piano, Rhodes and melodica) Tony Scherr (bass and guitars), Kenny Wollesen (drums and vibes), Yotam Silberstein (guitar), Peter Sprague (guitar) and Bashiri Johnson.

WOMEN WHO ROCK

MELANIE MARTINEZ PORTALS TOUR

Off the heels of the release of her album, PORTALS, Melanie Martinez announced a 29-city tour. Produced by Live Nation, the run will kick off on May 30 at Fillmore Auditorium in Denver making stops across the U.S. and Canada in San Francisco, New York, Chicago and more before wrapping up in Montreal at MTELUS on July 15.

The 13-track PORTALS is highlighted by new single “VOID,” written and produced by Martinez. Martinez first unveiled PORTALS with a viral TikTok video. Hugely anticipated festival appearances last month at Lollapalooza Argentina, Lollapalooza Chile, Bogota, Columbia’s Estéreo Picnic, and Lollapalooza Brazil saw Melanie Martinez debuting new songs for the very first time, performing as an otherworldly new creature which is a rebirth of her alter ego “Cry Baby.”

The PORTALS Tour will find Martinez exclusively performing as Cry Baby at every show, where fans can enjoy hearing songs from her latest album. She’ll be at Radio City June 28th. Tickets are available at LiveNation.com.

SUSANNA HOFFS THE DEEP END

For her latest album The Deep End, Susanna Hoffs teamed with legendary producer Peter Asher (Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor) to record musicians that have been speaking to her in recent years: Billie Eilish, Joy Oladokun, Brandy Clark, Holly Humberstone, and Ed Sheeran, alongside her old favorites from Squeeze, Colin Blunstone, Yazoo and more.

Susanna has a radical reinvention of The Rolling Stones’ “Under My Thumb” paired with a dance remix by Oak Felder.

“I’ve listened to that song on repeat since it came out in the mid-’60,” says Hoffs. “I had an epiphany when I really thought about what the song is about, and it ignited this idea to do my own spin on it—to change the gender and see how it felt. What if the roles are/were reversed and the boy is under her thumb? It was exhilarating to give it a new spin, to flip it on its head, or on its ass. It’s a sassy, irreverent song, so it was extremely pleasurable to turn the tables.” Hoffs is backed by Waddy Wachtel on guitar, Ledisi on background vocals, bassist Leland Sklar, Russ Kunkel on drums, Jeff Alan Ross on vibes.

ALICE HOWE SINGLE “LOVE HAS NO RULES”

Recorded in two sessions at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, where the voices of icons like Aretha Franklin, Etta James, and Otis Redding once shook the walls, Circumstance channels their spirits with 11 stirring tracks that pull no punches diving into the vagaries of the heart and her own personal journey. As an old soul inside a 30-something millennial, the golden-voiced Howe puts her stamp on Americana’s venerable strands with 10 standout originals evoking both the classic singer-songwriters and the seminal music that once filled airwaves, roadhouses, and juke joints.

Circumstance, produced and arranged by Howe’s creative partner, Freebo, a veteran bass player and former Bonnie Raitt band member, displays her vocal prowess and introspective writing in abundance, mining both her heart and her musical tastes for a deep, personal journey across an Americana soundscape dotted with blues, folk, country, soul, and rock.

The album is a personal, soulful nod to her influences and the music she loves, all of it sung old-school without auto-tuning. In spirit, it draws from admired singers – Alison Krauss or the 1970s Laurel Canyon circle — but its soul is pure Alice Howe.

Circumstance is available at music.alicehowe.com/ circumstance. She will celebrate the album’s release with a series of tour dates, appearing April 21st at Rockwood Music Hall.

(Rihanna, Christina Aguilera, Usher), Electronic producer and DJ Marshmello and more.

She also joined Kehlani last September on the domestic leg of her Blue Water Road Trip tour. That same year, her hit track “Smack a Bitch,” produced by Kenny Beats, was RIAA-certified Platinum. Fans can access tickets at www.riconastymusic.com. She’’ be appearing April 19 at Music Hall of Williamsburg

PUNK RAP QUEEN RICO NASTY

Rico Nasty, revitalized her previous Soundcloud and YouTube exclusive hit, “Beat My Face.” The track is now available on all DSPs after gaining traction on TikTok and now has over 60K+ fan creates on the platform. As the hit grew, it caught the ears of a few people at Urban Decay and has now become the official sound of their new campaigns.

Last month, Rico announced her 2023 headlining tour, Monster Energy Outbreak Tour Presents: Rico Nasty. The tour will kick off in Toronto, ON, on April 16 at Toybox Nightclub and stop in major cities, including Brooklyn, Washington D.C., and Los Angeles, and more, before wrapping in Detroit on May 26 at the El Club. Last year, Rico Nasty delivered Las Ruinas, a 17-track project that she labeled a mixtape featuring singer/songwriter Bibi Bourelly

ISABELLA LOVESTORY SINGLE “LATINA”

Honduran artist Isabella Lovestory shares “Latina,” her first offering of new music in 2023. In keeping with last year’s critically-acclaimed debut album Amor Hardcore, “Latina” showcases Isabella’s genre-bending sound, co-produced by Chicken, Kamixlo and Nick León, alongside another self-directed music video inspired by movies like Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! and Death Proof, portraying Isabella as a fearless & perverted cowgirl, a monstrous sexy siren, a white-faced European manic madame, and of course the badass antihero L.A.T.I.N.A .

The album highlights a chorus of some of underground Latin music’s distinctive voices with features from perreo institution Ms. Nina, BX drill-dembow hybrid Chucky73 and upstarts MethMath and SixSex, along with productions for a bigger stage from longtime collaborator Chicken, Nick León, Kamixlo and others. The album includes previouslyreleased singles “Exibisionista,” “Cherry Bomb,” “Fashion Freak” and “Sexo Amor Dinero.”

ALT-ROCKER ANNABEL LEE

Los Angeles-based alt-rocker Annabel Lee’s debut album Mother’s Hammer is out. A limited run on vinyl is available. Alongside the LP, Lee shares the latest, haunting track, “All Of My Ghosts” out now.

Over 11 compelling tracks, Annabel paints a realistic portrait of the human experience that never hesitates to confront even the most grim aspects of her life. Conversely, Annabel matches these darker emotions with joyous moments, shining a bright light on womanhood with gritty, fiery energy as she finds her own strength and begins to fully trust herself. The music meets her where she is, putting both her artistry and humanity on full display like never before.

All songs were written by Annabel Lee, and produced and recorded by Justin Glasco. It was mixed by Ryan Lipman and mastered by Jett Galindo at Bakery Mastering. All vocals are also by Annabel Lee and instrumentation is by Lee and Glasco.

SXSW 2023 was a year like no other. After taking 2020 and 2021 off during the pandemic, SXSW came back in 2022 learning how to navigate the event in a post-COVID world. And this year was the year they went above and beyond and really brought back the energy I’ve felt from 2019 and prior. So let’s just get into this thing!

I find that every year, whatever company has taken over Antone’s Bar and Music Venue always does that place justice. And that was true of Shell House this year. The company put together an interactive lounge on the second floor and had some truly talented acts in the main hall.

Cas Haley drew me in from the moment I saw him. He is a singer-songwriter who deals out the very best energy through his reggae music and reggae inspired remakes of popular songs. He started the set by playing some originals and then quickly dove into familiar tracks with a fresh take on them. I’m not normally a reggae listener, but something about his country mixed with reggae style really hit for me. He was a bright energy on the stage and his band was on point and really pulled me deep into the music, almost making me forget where I was. His voice was melodic and soothing and harmoniously blended together with the instrumentals coming from all around him. It was not how I expected my Tuesday to go, but I’m glad it did.

A constant stop for me most days at SXSW was the Dolby House which showcased some new audio and visual technologies from Dolby, including updates to their Atmos and Vision lines. The one that stuck out to me the most was Atmos, which allows up to 128 different sound objects and 64 different speakers to connect to it.

Now, you may not have 64 speakers in your home, but I could immediately hear the difference even with just a few in their display room. The really cool takeaway I had from this is just how 3D audio can actually be. For things recorded with Atmos, the audio is actually spatially laid out around you. In this way, you can perceive a thunderstorm rolling in from the left of the screen and feel the randomness of raindrops falling. If there is a spaceship doing circles around you, it actually feels like it is in the room with you, seamlessly jumping from speaker to speaker, creating a truly immersive experience. It’s a technology I’ll have to check out, as it seems any audio or movie fanatic would want to have it.

On Thursday afternoon, I wandered over to the Canada House to get some free food and drinks. I didn’t expect to stay too long, but William Prince

made me. He’s a country and folk singer-songwriter from Winnipeg and his stunning voice, beautiful songs, and overall loving energy made it hard to leave. It wasn’t just about his incredibly pure and captivating music; it was also about how he made me feel. As an artist, connecting with the crowd is one of the most important aspects of performing live and William Prince nailed that. His set was peppered with various stories and messages that made me feel like I was having a conversation with another human and not just listening to someone on a stage with tracks filled with passion I’d put him on the list of “gems” I found that week.

Another “gem” to add to the list was Akua Naru who played at the Reeperbahn Hamburger event at Shangri-La. Akua Naru is a rapper based out of Connecticut and came out with a full band to bring the house down. From the moment she came out, she brought the heat to the stage, turning the crowd from what felt like a bunch of awkward teenagers standing at the back of a party to a full fledged groove session with the crowd moving to the music. The lyrics were impactful and well written and the flow of the music and words was like a dance of sweet bliss. I love how engaged she was with the audience and truly brought the hype. Her band was also insanely talented and I thoroughly enjoyed the keyboard player’s vocal and solo performance at the end of the show. Definitely one to add to your list.

there as well. His set was well curated and also featured him playing songs out live on a digital controller as well as a DJ backing him up. His songs have a familiar feel with a fresh take and soothing vocals and classic Afrobeat rhythms right around that tempo that makes you move your body slow and smooth. I appreciated his stage presence and ability to keep the energy high the entire time throughout his set. I thought I had found a “gem” here but turns out he is already pretty well known, with his track “Finesse” having received over 100 million plays on Spotify. If he’s new to you, I’m glad I could help out and hope you get to give him a listen for yourself.

SXSW 2023 went out with a bang on Saturday at The Stage presented by Billboard when Kx5 headlined a show at the Moody Amphitheater. Kx5 is a new superduo consisting of Deadmau5 and Kaskade, two of electronic music’s heavy hitters each around for over a decade. Their live show was exactly what I expected. Throughout their performance, the styles of each artist were evident and shone through their music. Deadmau5’s intricate and constantly building synth lines gave way to a mysterious aura of sound encapsulating the viewer. His music production is other worldly and allows for the listener to get lost as they follow the sounds and movements of the chords and progressions.

The Iceland Airwaves event took place at the Driskill Hotel and they brought an array of talent with them. One that particularly stuck out was Tim Snider and Wolfgang Timber, a guitarist and electric violinist playing their hearts out. I was truly blown away by the musicianship and skill between them and their ability to evoke such varied emotions through their playing. Even with some severe technical difficulties on the part of the venue, this duo was able to bring their show to life and still give an amazing performance filled with everything one could want in a SXSW performance.

In addition to Dolby House, the White Claw House was another regular stop for me this year. I mean, who can really turn down free Thai food and 3 free White Claws every time you walked through the door! On my daily trip there one day, I got to kick back and listen to Pheelz, a Nigerian producer and singer-songwriter who put on an energetic and enthralling performance. His style spans multiple genres but mostly includes Afrobeats and R&B. I’d even add in it a little bit of a pop music influence

Take this expert level of analog and digital synthesis and mix it with the iconic melodies that Kaskade is known for, you instantly have an unforgettable show. Many of the harmonic vocals and heavy hitting drops could be attributed to Kaskade’s experience in progressive house music and were inherently addicting. I’ve seen both of these artists many times, with one of my first electronic shows being a Deadmau5 show in NYC around 2012. It’s nice to see both of these artists mixing things up a bit and seeing how each of their skillsets can be used to bring together a new and diverse experience. They’ve got me hooked and I’ll be looking out for Kx5 in the near future.

Hope you were able to get a little taste of what SXSW has to offer and can almost feel like you were there the entire time. If you haven’t been to one yet, I highly encourage you to make your way down to Austin, TX and run loose for 10 days to see all of the best in music, tech, movies, comedy, and so much more. Thanks for tuning in and feel free to reach out to me at richiegtechno@gmail.com! Keep raging my friends.
