MARITIME FILM FESTIVAL A celebration of Long Island’s coastal culture, the multi-day Maritime Film Festival will explore topics such as Long Island’s bay houses, the first all-female crew of sailors to circumnavigate the globe, and the Bungalows of Rockaway. Screening at Huntington’s Cinema Arts Centre starting in June 2022, the festival will feature a number of special guests including filmmakers, subjects of the films, and experts on Long Island history. Dating back to the 1700s, settlers on Long Island made their livings and sometimes their fortunes from the bounty of the sea, but in the last 50 years the surrounding waters have changed greatly. While there are fewer commercial baymen and fishermen today, there is still a powerful history being carried on. The Cinema Arts Centre will host three film screenings as part of the Maritime Film Festival, each paired with a discussion and audience Q&A, in June and July. The three films ‘The Bungalows of Rockaway’, ‘A World Within a World: Long Island’s Bay Houses’, and ‘Maiden’, each explore a unique aspect of maritime culture. Tickets: $17 Public | $12 Cinema Arts Centre Members

THEATER’S SUMMERTIME TREATS The most exciting news this summer is that “Into the Woods,” the City Center’s Encores! thrilling sold-out hit is transferring to Broadway for a limited 8-week engagement with most of its fabulous starry cast intact. SPORTS BEAT

Most observers gave New York Jets’ general manager Joe Douglas high marks for his 2022 NFL Draft selections. The marquee first-round selections were cornerback Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner, wide receiver Garrett Wilson, and defensive end Jermaine Johnson. In the third round, the Jets selected tight end Jeremy Ruckert who grew up in Lindenhurst before going to Ohio State University. While one Long Islander is coming to the Jets, another one is exiting. Rockville Centre native Greg Van Roten, who had been a starting offensive guard the last couple of seasons, was waived by the Jets last month. Jets head coach Robert Saleh told the media he would welcome Van Roten back if he didn’t sign with another NFL team. Kudos to Jets owner Woody Johnson for donating $1,000,000 to various Ukrainian relief organizations. The Jets’ longtime bete noire, Tom Brady, has had a highly active off-season. First, he retired from the NFL, and a couple of months later, he unretired. He

was then the subject of a ten-part documentary, “Tom Brady: Man in the Arena,” which can be viewed on both Hulu and ESPN+. Last month Fox Sports, which lost longtime lead NFL voices Joe Buck and Troy Aikman to ESPN, made a huge splash by announcing the greatest QB in NFL history would be their lead analyst on their NFL broadcasts when he hangs up his cleats for good. Brady signed a ten-year, $375 million contract. FOX is taking a substantial risk. While Brady was quite funny hosting “Saturday Night Live” in April 2005, he will have to provide his own script communicating in real time with an audience. Drew Brees, who had a long and distinguished career as an NFL quarterback, did not exactly wow viewers or NBC Sports executives as a broadcaster. Brees and NBC agreed to part ways after one year. Slime will be flying on Christmas Day as Nickelodeon will host its first-ever NFL regular season game when the Seattle Seahawks visit the Los Angeles Rams. Nickelodeon has won both raves and Emmy Awards for televising NFL wild card playoff games the last three years. The Mets started out the 2022 season on fire as they were in first place and winning thrilling comefrom-behind games with regularity. By mid-May there were troubling signs starting with dropping 2 out of 3 to the Seattle Mariners at Citi Field. That was the first series the Mets lost in 2022. Even though the Mariners are not a good team, these things happen over a long season. What had to concern Mets fans was the team’s

By Lloyd Carroll health. Injuries have derailed many a Mets season, so there was quickly a sense of deja vu. Catcher James McCann was lost for six weeks because he needed wrist surgery. Reliever Trevor May, one of the team’s big free agent signings after Steve Cohen bought the Mets from the Wilpons, was placed on the 60day injured list with arm inflammation. Starting pitcher Tylor Megill had to miss starts because of tendinitis in his throwing arm. At this writing, Jacob deGrom is still waiting to make his 2022 debut as he was diagnosed with a shoulder issue at the end of spring training. Michael King has quickly become one of the Yankees most dependable relief pitchers. The Boston College alum spent a lot of time pitching Jack Curry for the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre Rail Riders, the Yankees’ AAA farm team. I asked King if “Barre” is pronounced “bar” or “Barry.” “I have relatives who live in Wilkes-Barre, and they differ on the pronunciation!” King laughed when I told him I thought it was politics which divided most families. Bronx Bombers fans will enjoy reading “Swing and a Hit” (Grand Central Publishing) by Yankees great Paul O’Neill and YES analyst Jack Curry. O’Neill discusses how Don Mattingly was a mentor to him. He tells a humorous story about how he went to the movies with Donnie Baseball in Oakland while he was in a slump. “Will I ever get a hit again?” O’Neill whined. “Nah., I don’t see that in your future!” Mattingly deadpanned. Few players were more intense than O’Neill was, and that intensity sometimes triggered his temper. He recollects how he was so ticked at misplaying a single

hit by Lenny Dykstra that he wound up kicking a baseball to his third baseman when he was playing for the Cincinnati Reds. The Brooklyn Nets had a topsy-turvy season which culminated in getting swept in four games by the Boston Celtics in the first round of the NBA playoffs. One thing which remained constant was the top-notch YES broadcasting team comprised of Ian Eagle, Sara Kustok, and Michael Grady. This past season YES made a great acquisition when they hired longtime NBA scribe, and North Babylon native, Frank Isola. Few can break down the intricacies of the game, and either praise or criticize players for bona fide reasons the way Isola can, and he never speaks in a snarky manner. No one can predict the inscrutable ways of Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello. He shocked the hockey world, and especially Long Island, when he fired popular head coach Barry Trotz, and replaced him with his top assistant, Lane Lambert. Veteran hockey journalist Ashley Scharge believed Lamoriello let Trotz go because he wanted a lucrative contract extension. Trotz was entering the final year of his existing contract and he understandably wanted more money job security. Lou doesn’t like extending either to anyone.

JAZZ & BLUES DAVID STRYKER AS WE ARE “It’s my dream project,” Dave Stryker repeats several times in a conversation about his 34th release as a leader, As We Are, on which the guitar master addresses one of the few configurations he hasn’t tackled during 40-plus years in the jazz trenches. Stryker, not predisposed to hyperbole, isn’t exaggerating. How else to describe an Dave Stryker opportunity to record a suite of new originals Photo by Steven Peterson with a band propelled by all-world bass-drum partners John Patitucci and Brian Blade, fleshed out by harmonically erudite pianist Julian Shore’s bespoke string quartet arrangements that include room for a couple of soaring violin solos by the luminous Sara Caswell? “I always wanted to do something where strings would really be integrated into the music, not a coloring or sweetening that comes in later,” Stryker says. Shore rises to the occasion, imparting a lush, fulsome sound to the two violins, viola and cello, creating sections that offer texture and contrast. In keeping with the dream project Stryker reached out to two of the greatest musicians alive today - Patitucci and Blade who happily signed on. Six new Stryker originals, one Shore original and Nick Drake’s River Man are arranged with string quartet by Shore to create one of the most truly beautiful and exciting recordings in recent times. JAZZ IS DEAD 011 Jazz Is Dead has returned with another offering of top-shelf recordings, paying tribute to past legends and new school torchbearers alike. Whether you’ve known the names of Jazz Is Dead Series 2’s featured guests or are just meeting them for the first time, prepare to be blown away. For Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, collaborating with music icons and personal heroes is a dream come true. With Jazz Is Dead Series 2, as highlighted on the series compilation Jazz Is Dead 011, Younge and Muhammad have once again, together with a roster of world-renowned legends, crate digger patron saints, and an exciting vanguard of young talent, delivered another unimpeachable collection of fresh and captivating recordings inspired by jazz’s past, present, and future. There are names that some may already be familiar with, such as Lonnie Liston Smith, Jean Carne, and Tony Allen, and those less so, like Henry Franklin, Phil Ranelin, Wendell Harrison, Garrett Saracho, & Katalyst. What unites each new collaborator is their unbent dedication to remaining original, preserving their creativity, and sharing it with the world. SAM REIDER’S PETRICHOR Slow & Steady Records announced the release of pianist-composer Sam Reider’s first solo piano recording, Petrichor. The eight original compositions form a musical reflection on Reider’s recent homecoming to San Francisco after ten years in New York. On Petrichor, Reider returns to his piano roots, with particular focus on composition (which Reider currently studies at San Francisco State University, while continuing a mentorship with NYC-based composer Kendall Briggs) as well as paying homage to his earliest inspirations on piano – Duke Ellington, James Booker, Keith Jarrett, Claude Debussy, and Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou. Petrichor was recorded in August, 2021 at SandBox, a brand new performing arts venue in Sand City, CA that’s run by cellist Michelle Djokic. In fact, Reider first discovered the space (and its 1917 Steinway) while quarantining in the Monterey area during the pandemic, and was immediately enamored with its sound. Two months later, Reider was back at the SanBox, having written and workshopped his new music. This time, he was accompanied by engineers and co-producers Jacob Blumberg (who grew up with Reider in the Bay Area) and Jon Seale (of Mason Jar Music) with the intention of “capturing the vibe of Michelle’s space,” as Reider puts it. The word “petrichor” means the fresh smell of the earth after a first rain. Driven by Reider’s gifted sense of melodicism, playful song forms, odd (and standard) time meters, and a reverence of the solo piano tradition, Petrichor embodies the many paths and paces of life, which often lead us home again.

WHEELS & DEALS

THE LIVING STRANGE NEW SINGLE Brooklyn-based band, The Living Strange released their first new single and video of 2022 called “Close” which is from their upcoming full length record, Tell Me Who You Are due out later in 2022. The Luna Collective premiered the new single and said, “‘CLOSE’ is a bright concoction of tinkering riffs held together with a gritty lead guitar and simple yet emotional drumming... The band does an incredible job at making the listener feel every beat, but hearing this song live is a necessity.” Blending fuzzy anthemic guitar riffs, whirly-swirly synths, drums that make you want to shake your ass, along with highly personal lyrics that feature a healthy dose of existentialism and an even healthier dose of humor; The Living Strange creates hooky, modern-rock music that speaks from the perspective of three 22 year old dudes raging against the dying of a world they are just getting to know. The Living Strange is: Eli Sokolow (Lead Vocals/ Guitar), Benya Shafrir (Drums), Nico Sleator (Synth).

WITH THE PUNCHES “STONEHAM BLUES” Of the new track, vocalist Jesse Vadala says, “In the time when we were touring independently and writing our own way around the country, I often felt invincible even if just for a while. Inevitably, the rubber band would snap and bad news would arrive. I would be reminded swiftly of the severity of time and certainty of death. Always mildly obsessed with thoughts of my own. This song is loosely written about a few close friends who passed away. “I struggled like many do in processing death, especially those lost to addiction. We always wish for ways to protect the ones we love. When they leave abruptly, it can shatter so many lives. Some days we feel lost. Other days we shine a bit brighter from the light of our memories. There were several sharp moments like this in the last few years. Now when I give it time, I feel so proud and thankful for all of the beautiful memories, they tend to outweigh the bad.” With The Punches is regarded as a staple within the emo/pop punk community. Formed in 2008, the band has released three EP’s and one full-length album in that time. Their new EP “Discontent” will be the band’s first release in over 9 years. Recorded and produced by Brendan Williams at Gain Stage Studios, the upcoming EP includes 5 of their most distinguished tracks to date.

ATTIA TAYLOR SPACE GHOST Brooklyn-based psych-pop musician Attia Taylor announced her debut full-length Space Ghost. The ten track album was produced by Jeff Ziegler (Kurt Vile, War on Drugs) and will be released on Lame-O Records (Trace Mountains, Slaughter Beach, Dog) on July 7th, 2022. It is currently available for pre-order. Taylor is a writer, musician and content producer who got her start in music through Girls Rock Philly. Her dream pop songs have a distinct lo-fi sound, influenced by musicians such as Melody’s Echo Chamber, Broadcast, Mr. Twin Sister and Laurie Anderson. Lyrically specific, the record tells Taylor’s story of navigating grief, and represents a triumphant finale to years of being trapped in mental introspection and insecurity. Though the subject matter of the songs is heavy, the music itself is colorful and fun, tinged with psych and funk, and reflecting her interest in lush, catchy sounds. Alongside drummer and bassist Corey Duncan (also her bandmate in Strange Parts), Taylor uses multiple analog synths to paint minimalistic elements with clear pop undertones.

TECHNOBEAT

By Richard Joseph Branciforte

Marvel Years Hey everyone! Hope you haven’t missed me too much since last month and are ready to strap in for another wild ride for this month’s edition of TechnoBeat. I wanted to dive back into something I touched on last issue but really needs another go at it: Electric Forest. Situated in the forest in western Michigan, this festival really brings something different to the table and is more than just a music festival with great production. EF does everything in their power to make that space a safe, fun, unique home away from home. Whether you want to take a ride on the Ferris wheel, go up in a hot air balloon, or play the piano for some random strangers, this festival really encapsulates the energy and love each and every one of us hopes to encounter throughout our lives. They have added specially curated events such as “The Gouda Life” wine and cheese pop up where you can pretend you’re a wine sommelier and that you actually know a thing or two about cheese. Or perhaps you want a lovely brunch laid out for you with all the works included. If you have a skill you’ve always wanted to learn about, EF has people like you and me come in and share their talents with everyone during workshops at The Brainery! And that’s just the beginning. From initiatives to get people registered to vote, a whole radio station dedicated to EF vibes, food drives supporting local communities, sustainability initiatives, and “wish granting” to allow festivalgoers dreams to make an impact on the world come true. This place is more than meets the eye and it’s only fully understood once you step through those gates and feel the energy; hear the sounds; and experience what it means to be part of the Electric Forest family. Now, there’s some class acts coming through the city in the next month so get yourselves ready for weeks of nonstop good music. One of my favorite up and coming artists Marvel Years will be making a stop at the Knitting Factory on June 17. Marvel Years takes live guitar and mixes it with a funky style and the heavy hitting basslines to match it. He’s been in the scene for a bit, but I think he’s on the peak of breaking through to one of the biggest and baddest careers out there. You’ll get live instrumentation energy while also dancing nonstop throughout the night.

Nitti Gritti should be up next for you at Harbor NYC on July 1. Another artist that has been climbing the ranks in recent years, Nitti Gritti goes hard and keeps his live sets fresh with tons of new music and plenty of genre-crossing mixes to please everyone out there. He’s recently had a bit of a bass house vibe going on but is no stranger to wonky beats and heavy dubstep as well as mixing in throwback tracks with a little bit of his own flair to them. Anjunabeats will be hosting a weekend takeover at Brooklyn Mirage on July 8 to satisfy all of your chill trance and house cravings. The lineup includes Andrew Bayer, Audien, Genix, Grum, Mat Zo, Naz, and Oliver Smith. Anjunabeats has become a staple over the years for people looking for that type of music that gives them feelings of pure bliss and transports them into a beautiful world far, far away. You can bet if you see the Anjunabeats name somewhere, it’s probably where you should be and will not disappoint. I’ve been a bit on a house fix lately and have been diver deeper into both G House and Bass House; two genres that feel like that have that little bit of extra “umph” that I’m looking for. I’ve been really drawn to the Night Bass Records label headed by AC Slater scratch that itch for me. This whole label really brings on that driving rhythm and heavy basslines the way I don’t see as frequently as I would like in the house scene. These tracks

just hit differently and every time I’ve played these artists’ songs out while DJing, the crowd cannot stop moving. In particular, Nostalgix has really captured my attention; especially her song “My Type”. She really knows how to craft a song to keep the listener drawn in and the sounds she creates just hit different. If you’re looking to dive into some house, I’d start there and then make your way over to Phlegmatic Dogs, Chris Lorenzo, and Bijou. You can thank me later. That’s all the time I have so reach out to me at richiegtechno@gmail.com for some more recommendations or to catch up in general! Keep raging my friends!

CLASSIC ROCK ARTIMUS PYLE & GET JOE RECORDS In keeping with its mission statement “to distribute world-class artists’ content,” GET JOE RECORDS announced the signing of legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame drummer Artimus Pyle (best known for his work with the iconic Southern-rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd) to the newly-formed, Texas-based label. Pyle, whose musical career spans a half a century, is currently back in the studio with members of The Artimus Pyle Band (now comprised of Scott Raines-guitar/vocals; Jerry Lyda-guitar; Brad Durden-keys/vocals; and Dave Fowler-bass), a group he established in 2010 to honor the music of Ronnie Van Zant’s Lynyrd Skynyrd. “Artimus is Southern Rock royalty and one of 2 remaining original members of one of the greatest rock and roll bands that ever lived,” explains Len Snow, President of Get Joe Records. The signing with Get Joe Records comes on the heels of Pyle’s successful release of his 2020 film, “Street Survivors: The True Story of the Lynyrd Skynyrd Plane Crash” (Cleopatra Entertainment). The film is based on Pyle’s time with Skynryd leading up to and shortly following the infamous plane crash in 1977. The film is available on DVD or Video On Demand through Amazon.com and other online video outlets. BARRY MANILOW AT UBS ARENA Grammy award winner Barry Manilow announced a special six show arena tour – MANILOW: HITS 2022 – taking place this August with special guest David Koz. Having sold more than 85 million albums worldwide, Barry Manilow is one of the world’s all-time bestselling recording artists. He’s had an astonishing 50 Top 40 singles including 12 #1s and 27 Top 10 hits and is ranked at the #1 Adult Contemporary Artist of all-time, according to Billboard and R&R magazines. TICKETS: Tickets at Ticketmaster.com ZAPPA BAND FIRST HEADLINING TOUR One of the most ground-breaking, original, and fearless figures of popular music was undoubtedly the legendary Frank Zappa. And paying tribute to this late icon is The Zappa Band – a group largely comprised of former members of Frank’s bands. And for the first time ever, the group will be headlining their own tour for much of June – beginning in New York on the 12th, and then wrapping up in New Hampshire on the 26th. The Zappa Band’s lineup features Zappa alumni Ray White (lead vocals, guitar), Mike Keneally (guitar, keys, vocals), Scott Thunes (bassist) and Robert Martin (keyboards, sax, vocals), and ZPZ alums Jamie Kime (guitar) and ZAPPA archivist Joe “Vaultmeister” Travers (drums, vocals). Each musician played in the studio and on the road with Zappa during his career, while three of these alums played on ‘ZAPPA 88: The Last U.S. Show,’ one of the most recent offerings from Zappa Records & Universal Music The Zappa alums are joined by Joe Travers and Jamie Kime, who are no strangers to FZ’s music, to round out the ensemble. They’re appearing June 16th at Sony Hall - New York, NY – sonyhall.com/events/the-zappaband/ and June 17th at Tarrytown Music Hall - Tarrytown, NY - http://tickets. tarrytownmusichall.org

WOMEN WHO ROCK nomadic kind of girl without a particular direction, one who doesn’t know exactly what she wants to do. Drawing from her identity as a self-proclaimed “hopeless romantic,” Sophia has a penchant for romanticizing historical figures and events, contemporary lovers, and foreign cities, weaving in the story of her West Coast roots in sunny Los Angeles, her university life in the political and cosmopolitan mecca that is Washington D.C., and her role as an expatriate in foreign cities.

RINA SAWAYAMA HOLD THE GIRL Multidimensional pop sensation Rina Sawayama announced her sophomore album Hold The Girl due September 2nd via Dirty Hit. Accompanying the announcement of the new album, Rina shares the lead single “This Hell.” “This Hell” is a joyous and roaring slice of popmeets-country which was co-produced by the legendary Paul Epworth and Clarence Clarity and written by Rina alongside Vixen, Epworth and longterm friend and collaborator Lauren Aquilina (Demi Lovato, Little Mix). Rina kicks off the track with an ode to Shania Twain as she says “let’s go girls” before bursting into the first verse. The new single is awash with glam rock riffs and lyrics that are peppered with tongue-in-cheek one-liners shouting out a pantheon of gay icons Britney, Whitney and Princess Di. Following on from her critically acclaimed debut SAWAYAMA, the new record will see Rina once again juxtapose intimate storytelling with arenasized songs creating another ambitious and original album to excite fans and critics alike. The product of Rina and these collective minds coming together is an album that melds influences from across the pop spectrum and is a bold and honest statement of Rina’s personal evolution; coming to terms with her own past and the jubilation of turning to the future.

Alicia Blue ALICIA BLUE “DOG DAYS IN LA” “’Dog Days in LA” is a bridge between old and new, between folk and rock, between what was, what is and what’s to come,” says Nashville-based magnetic indie-folk singer-songwriter Alicia Blue about the first single/video off her new EP Inner Child Work out on July 15 via Magnetic Moon. “Dog Days in LA” is about her realization of how much she didn’t have her life in California figured out. Directed by Tyler Dunning Evans, the video for “Dog Days of LA” was filmed in and around the outskirts of Los Angeles and Joshua Tree. The video follows Blue driving in a convertible with the top down, air washing over her, creating a pleasurable sensory overload adorned with a unique blend of LA skylines and picturesque cityscapes.

SOPHIA MARIE “MENACE IN VENICE” LA raised singer-songwriter Sophia Marie’s music is autobiographical. Each of her songs tells the story of a young life in progress. From leaving the sunny, casual west coast for a more buttonedup DC life at Georgetown University (where she studies International Politics) to a life-changing semester abroad in Dublin, to unrequited romances and lovesick travels, each of these experiences is vividly documented in her music. Her new song “Menace In Venice” is no different. Sophia often feels like an ambitious, lust-for-life,

TESS PARKS’ “AND THOSE WHO WERE SEEN DANCING” Toronto-born, London-based artist Tess Parks returned with her new album ‘And Those Who Were Seen Dancing’ on Fuzz Club Records. Alongside the new album, Parks has also announced a UK/ EU tour and festival dates in support. Following years of international touring and a lengthy list of critically-acclaimed collaborations with Brian Jonestown Massacre’s Anton Newcombe in recent years (most recently the duo’s self-titled 2018 LP), the new album will be Parks’ first fulllength solo offering since her debut album, ‘Blood Hot’, was released back in 2013. Trailing the highly-praised singles ‘Happy Birthday Forever’, ‘Brexit at Tiffany’s’ and ‘Do You Pray?’, ‘And Those Who Were Seen Dancing’ is out now and available to stream/purchase at tessparks.lnk.to/dancing Good Times Magazine - June 14 - July 11, 2022 • 21

RHYTHM TRACKING

With Jimi LaLumia

Jordan

This column was the first to state that vinyl recordings would never disappear; the campaign for compact discs was initially composed of attacks on vinyl and how superior the CD was; needless to say, the compact disc turned out to be far less than perfect, as people found out that CDs could also skip, crack and sound soulless because of the way that sound was transfered to the disc. Then, of course, streaming /downloading was going to be the deliverance from vinyl; that attempt duplicated the hula hoop from the 1950’s; everyone wanted one, and then no one wanted one. People love objects, they love to hold and look at them, be they art, books, whatever; these pieces become a collection, and that was always the case with vinyl records and it still is; young people in particular have become prideful of building a vinyl set of their favorite artists/performers. The conveyance of a physical music collection has returned to the top of the heap for the new breed, and never really left for those who are older. The music biz took an almost fatal nose dive when they tried to do away with actual ‘records’; hopefully they’ve learned their lesson. The major success of the site ‘Discogs’ worldwide is proof positive. Punk fans mourn the death of Jordan; she was part of the Sex Pistols posse in the late 70’s and one of the stars of Derek Jarman’s film “Jubilee”, the first ever punk rock film; she was a trend and style sensation, and she will be missed. Sadly she won’t be able to attend any of the worldwide premieres of the long awaited film “NightClubbing” which chronicles the early days of ‘punk’ before it was called that, how the early seeds of the scene were planted in New York City and then spread worldwide, especially to London. RIP Jordan.

METAL

CAPRA: RED GUILLOTINE Lafayette, Louisiana-based metallic hardcore outfit CAPRA unleashed a new video for “Red Guillotine.” The track comes by way of the band’s critically lauded In Transmission full-length, released via Blacklight Media/Metal Blade Records last year. Comments vocalist Crow Lotus of the powerful track, “I wrote this song about how helpless it feels to be prey in a predatory world. Women should be celebrated for standing their ground, not ostracized and humiliated.” CAPRA will kick off their month-long US tour supporting Whores. The journey runs through July 3rd in Columbia, South Carolina with additional support provided by Bummer. They’re appearing June 25th at Saint Vitus Bar - Brooklyn, NY ANTHRAX 40TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT July 18, 2021 marked the 40th anniversary of thrash metal pioneers ANTHRAX. The celebration began in May of last year and culminated on July 16/17 with a global Livestream event shot at the Los Angeles soundstage/studio The Den. For two-plus hours, Anthrax performed an extensive set of hits and deep cuts pulled from their vast catalog. Anthrax announced that the entire performance, plus never-before-seen rehearsal footage and Scott Ian’s New York City “walking tour,” pointing out the spots that played a role in Anthrax’s formation and history, will be released in North America on July 15 on Blu-Ray / CD /Digital (Megaforce). Anthrax XL will also have a European digital release on July 15 (Nuclear Blast), followed by a Blu-Ray release later this year. DIO HOLY DIVER SUPER DELUXE EDITION Ronnie James Dio would have turned 80 years old on July 10. Among the greatest heavy metal singers of all time, Dio’s career spanned five decades, touched millions of fans and pioneered his signature “devil’s horns,” one of the most popular hand gestures in the world. Dio also provided vocals and lyrics for some of the most iconic rock albums of all time with Black Sabbath and Rainbow, before establishing his own band Dio as a metal force with their 1983 debut Holy Diver. Holy Diver was a platinum-certified smash and one of the late singer-songwriter’s most groundbreaking achievements. Rhino revisits this epic metal moment on HOLY DIVER: SUPER DELUXE EDITION, available on July 8 as a 4-CD boxed set ($59.98) and digitally. The collection comes with two versions of Holy Diver. The first is a new mix of the album made by Joe Barresi (Tool, Queens of the Stone Age, Slipknot). He used the original analog tapes to remix all nine tracks on the album. The second is a newly remastered version of the original 1983 mix. The Super Deluxe Edition also features unreleased live performances and outtakes, along with a selection of rarities from the era.

BITS & PIECES JOHNNY THUNDERS ‘BORN TO LOSE’ Born in Queens, NY in 1952, Johnny Thunders fell in love with rock ’n’ roll and turned his back on a potentially successful baseball career to start the legendary New York Dolls - the band that spawned hundreds of other hopeful rock ’n’ roll bands. When the New York Dolls folded, JT and drummer Jerry Nolan went back to New York’s budding punk rock scene to start The Heartbreakers; an iconic band if there ever was one. Their raw, wild and ‘dirty’ sound became engraved in the minds of all those young punks and it’s fair to say they were more than a major influence on the London punk scene. Over the years, The Heartbreakers toured on and off and they always kept the magic from the early days. Everybody remembers ‘Chinese Rocks’, ‘Born to Lose’ and other gems embedded in our hearts and minds forever. Solo, Johnny Thunders showed a vulnerable, deeply sensitive and poetic side to his rocker persona, with masterpieces like ‘Can’t Put Your Arms Around A Memory’, and ‘So Alone’. JT just can’t leave anyone indifferent which continues to this day, even after his untimely passing at age 38 in New Orleans. Johnny Thunders and the Cosa Nostra performance is a full length recording from The Mudd Club in Gothenburg, Sweden on June 16, 1983. Johnny Thunders and the Cosa Nostra were so influential that on this night, attendance was at capacity and the set was tight, playing iconic songs such as ‘Personality Crisis’, ‘Born To Lose’ and ‘These Boots are Made for Walking’. SMASHING PUMPKINS NORTH AMERICAN TOUR The Smashing Pumpkins announced their North American arena tour with special guests Jane’s Addiction. Produced by Live Nation, the 32-date SPIRITS ON FIRE TOUR will commence in October including UBS Arena at Belmont Park on Friday, October 14. Both bands revealed the news live on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show. For tickets and more details, go to https:// smashingpumpkins.com/tour When The Smashing Pumpkins first emerged out of Chicago in 1988, the world had never heard a band quite like them. They spun together rock, pop, shoe-gaze, metal, goth, psychedelia, and electronic into a kaleidoscope of saccharine melodies, fuzzy distortion, bombastic orchestration, incendiary fretwork, eloquent songcraft, and unshakable hooks. Upon their formation, their sound was different, iconoclastic, and wholly new—and it still is today. JOE BOUCHARD “MY WAY IS THE HIGHWAY” Joe Bouchard is best known as a former member of Blue Öyster Cult. The original lineup sold millions of albums for Columbia Records, with such classic songs as “Don’t Fear the Reaper” and the #1 hit on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart “Burning for You.” Bouchard contributed to songwriting and lead vocals on some of BOC’s greatest songs, such as “Hot Rails to Hell.” Bouchard released his first single “My Way Is the Highway” from the forthcoming album American Rocker June 3 through his brother’s (Albert Bouchard) and his imprint Rockheart Records and Deko Entertainment (ADA/Warner Music Group). The new album American Rocker sees the return of Mickey Curry (Bryan Adams, Hall and Oates, Alice Cooper) on drums, and sees Bouchard taking a look back at the heyday of the 70’s with BÖC on tracks like “In the Golden Age,” and “Rocket to Fame.” Joe Bouchard will be joining his brother Albert Bouchard for select shows in North America and their first ever Bouchard Brothers UK Tour this summer.

The new track from the indie rock veterans – now in their 25th year as a band – is available at all DSPs and streaming services via Atlantic Records everywhere on Friday, September 16. As with the forthcoming album in its entirety, “Roman Candles” was produced by GRAMMY Award-winner John Congleton (St. Vincent, Sharon Van Etten, Wallows). Of the inspiration for the song, the band shares: “‘Roman Candles’ is about the crippling, existential dread that goes hand in hand with living in a nervous city on a dying planet. And that the only way to be in the moment is to let it all go.” Also unveiled is a wide-ranging US headline tour to celebrate the arrival of Asphalt Meadows. They will be appearing September 30th at Forest Hills Stadium. TEDESCHI TRUCKS BEACON RETURN The Tedeschi Trucks Band will make their highly-anticipated annual return to the Beacon Theatre this fall. The 12-piece rock and soul collective led by singer-guitarist Susan Tedeschi and guitarist Derek Trucks will play seven nights in New York – September 29 & 30; October 1, 3, 6, 7, and 8 – as part of their multi-year, dual city residency with MSG. The 2022 Beacon Theatre shows mark the group’s 11th multi-night Beacon run, and will include their 50th lifetime show at the famed theatre on October 3. Tedeschi Trucks Band’s annual tenure in the Big Apple is a destination event – featuring surprise sit-ins, special guests, and set lists that go deep in the band’s catalog – and has become a can’t-miss concert experience Tickets for all seven Beacon Theatre shows are available for purchase by the general public via ticketmaster.com. Tickets are also available at the Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall and Beacon Theatre box offices. Prices range from $29.50 to $135.00. GEORGE MICHAEL FREEDOM UNCUT Sony Music Entertainment launched the brandnew trailer for GEORGE MICHAEL FREEDOM UNCUT, a deeply autobiographical feature documentary narrated by the late Grammy Award winner. A poignant and moving tribute to the legacy of one of Britain’s greatest performers, in his final work George Michael reclaims the narrative of his career, personal life and controversies in collaboration with co-director, producer and friend David Austin. This feature-length documentary will be released as a global cinema event on Wednesday, June 22. Throughout the film, Michael reveals openly and honestly the two distinct sides of his life: his very public music career and his private personal life that cameras never truly saw. The documentary features a slew of famous faces, contributors include George Michael, Stevie Wonder, Sir Elton John, Ricky Gervais, Nile Rogers, Mark Ronson, Tracey Emin, Liam Gallagher, Mary J. Blige, Jean Paul Gaultier, James Corden, Tony Bennett, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, and Tatjana Patitz George’s third studio album Older will be re-released on vinyl later this year on Friday, July 8 as part of a box set which also includes an Upper vinyl, an essay recounting stories behind the album and previously unseen photos.
