A History of The Joker In Movies Hosted by film historian Glenn Andreiev

So, who is The Joker? A flamboyant psychopath lusting for power and money or as Heath Ledger’s Joker claims, “...a dog chasing cars,” an agent of chaos. Filmmaker and film historian Glenn Andreiev returns to The Cinema Arts Centre, for a virtual lecture about history of The Joker in the movies. Batman’s creator, Bob Kane, used Conrad Viedt from the silent 1928 'The Man Who Laughs' as his inspiration for his wildly costumed villain. Joker portrayals such as Caesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, Mark Hamill,

Jared Leto and most recently Joaquin Phoenix will be discussed here. Prepare for a fun history – as The Joker once said – “Why so serious?” Glenn Andreiev is a Long Island based filmmaker and film historian. His films have been featured at various venues, including Vimeo on Demand, CNN, and The Museum of Modern Art. His films can be found at his website, www.lostemulsion.com. This virtual lecture will be streaming June 29th. With a post-program Zoom discussion on June 29th at 7 PM. $10 Public | $7 Members

SUMMER SWAP SERIES Still facing the challenges of bringing live music and other cultural events to people during a pandemic, the Jazz Loft in Stony Brook, in partnership with Suffolk County Presiding Officer Kara Hahn, Michael Ardolino of Realty Connect and other community businesses have come up with a unique and imaginative way to do just that. Called “Summer Stages With A Purpose (Summer SWAP), it will offer visitors a walking experience through the Stony Brook Village area, with four stages presenting music, art, history, educational lectures, activities and other cultural happenings. “Summer SWAP will be the ultimate collaborative celebration of music, art, history theater and activities right here in our Stony Brook Village,” said Jazz Loft founder Tom Manuel. “People can wander from stage to stage and take in a new experience at each one. It’s outdoors, it’s spacious and it’s a little back to normal for all of us.” Summer SWAP is scheduled for Thursday evening, July 1, from 6pm to 8pm. The four stages will be set up throughout the Stony Brook Village area. Entry is FREE. Stage areas will include: Front lawn of the Jazz Loft where musicians will perform atop the Jazz Loft's own mobile Jazz stage dubbed the "Jazz Dispatch"; Sand Street Beach, Stony Brook Village Inner Court, and the Brookhaven Town Lot by the kayak launch.

40 YEARS AGO, Long Island lost one of our neighbors who, Newsday called, “one of the most important Long Islanders of the 20th Century”. Through his music, stories, live performances and social activism, HARRY CHAPIN was credited with influencing the song, “We Are the World.” Some have stated that Harry Chapin also inspired USA for Africa and Live Aid. We also know that he founded two organizations, WHY Hunger and Long Island Cares, Inc., along with the 1977 Presidential Commission on Hunger under former President Jimmy Carter. On July 16, 1981 while thousands of his fans gathered in Eisenhower Park in East Meadow for one of his many free concerts to raise awareness of hunger, Harry Chapin died in an automobile accident on the Long Island Expressway. Forty years later, Harry Chapin’s legacy continues through the work of our organization. For forty years, Harry’s fans continue to contribute to our work in many ways. His words about ending hunger still resonate with our staff, volunteers, donors and fellow musicians like Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Dee Snyder and Darryl ‘Run DMC’ McDaniels who have all supported Long Island Cares, Inc.-The Harry Chapin Regional Food Bank. Although we will never know just how successful Harry would have been if he were still alive, we do know that he would be very proud IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW NEEDS ASSISTANCE, of the work that Long Island Cares continues to do to support our neighbors PLEASE CALL US AT 631.582.FOOD (3663) in need and to carry on his legacy.

PAC TRACK BEACHSTOCK IS BACK AT WHBPAC

Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center will hold its innovative, large-scale gala, Beachstock, on August 13th. This is a safe, outdoor concert event on the Great Lawn of Westhampton Beach. Featuring rock band Square Feeet, this popular NYC-based band will be playing their show, Say Goodbye Square Feeet to the ‘70s…and Hello to the ’90s. Patrons will be able to purchase pods on the lawn, which can accommodate up to four people, and will be fully styled and set-up as a luxe al fresco experience. Based on your choice of pod, each pod for up to four people will be stylishly outfitted as you dine on a delicious, picnic dinner from Hamptons Aristocrat. Square Feeet, the event’s headliner, is a classic rock, R&B, and pop cover band formed in 1999 by Jimmy Kuhn and guitarist David Katzman. In 2015, Kuhn added drummer Dorsey Parker, along with guitarists Apoena Frota and Andre Vansconcelos, who had all previously played together as part of Jefferson Starship’s backing band. Guitarist Vinny Silva and lead singer Pam Steebler round out the lineup and add texture to their impressive live performances. The rest of weekend will be rounded out by two more rocking concerts: On the 14th, Max Weinberg’s Jukebox will dazzle and delight music-lovers with their interactive “jukebox” experience – Max and Co. take on-demand song requests so the audience controls the setlist. And on the 15th, ‘60s rockers Jefferson Starship, one of the quintessential Haight/Ashbury acts, sings the tunes that defined a generation and spanned decades with hits “White Rabbit,” “Volunteers,” and “Somebody to Love.” Patrons who support the theatre by coming to Beachstock on Friday will have pre-sale access to concert tickets for the rest of the weekend – and a complete weekend pass is available for patrons who would like to attend all three nights. SPORTS BEAT New York Mets manager Luis Rojas, who like all managers, has taken hits for in-game strategy, did a remarkable job for the first third of the season as his team was shockingly in first place despite the loss of such starting lineup mainstays as Brandon Nimmo, JD Davis, and Michael Conforto because of injuries. Luis Rojas

Photo: New York Mets

Rojas also has been without two key starting pitchers in 2021–Noah “Thor” Syndergaard and Carlos Carrasco. There is no guarantee he will have either one at his disposal this season. He has been benefitted from the stellar work of perennial ace Jacob deGrom, Patchogue native Marcus Stroman, and free agent addition Taijuan Walker. On the downside, starter David Peterson appears to be a classic victim of the

sophomore jinx, while the fifth starter tandem of Joey Lucchesi and Jordan Yamamoto are lucky to go four innings in any game. I just completed reading So Many Ways To Lose (Harper) by veteran magazine writer Devin Gordon. The book is a breezy history of the Mets from 1962 through 2019. Unlike so many others, Gordon does not worship at the altar of 1969 Miracle Mets manager Gil Hodges as he chastised him for publicly humiliating outfielder Cleon Jones. Hodges walked out to left field to remove him because he did not think he hustled after a fly ball in his direction. On the other hand, Gordon tries to alternate between being a Mets fan and being a journalist and that’s an untenable dichotomy. He also comes off as a bit arrogant as he fancies himself the coolest kid in school because he got to interview Jeff Wilpon, Brodie Van Wagenen, and Mike Piazza. It’s as if he were paraphrasing Chevy Chase’s signature

line from the first season of “Saturday Night Live”; namely, “I’m Devin Gordon and you’re not!” Gordon also had the misfortune of finishing his book before Steve Cohen purchased the Mets from the Wilpon family. A far better literary bet for Mets fans is You Never Forget Your First (Press Box Publishing) by WLIE-AM Sunday night sports show host Mark Roseman and longtime baseball official scorer and former WCBS-AM sports anchor Howie Karpin. Both men have written prior sports books. Roseman and Karpin interview 40 former Mets ranging from icons such as Jerry Koosman and Ed Kranepool to nonagenarians Frank Thomas and Hobie Landrith to more obscure players as Dick Rustek and Ray Searage getting the memories of various firsts in their baseball lives. Among the little-known facts is centerfielder Dave Schneck reported to spring training not

long after he completed his tour of duty in Vietnam. Catcher Butch Benton has no love for Joe Torre because the then-Mets manager in 1979 told him he was coming north with the team at the conclusion of spring training. A day later Torre informed him he had been traded to the Chicago Cubs after his belongings were being shipped to Flushing. The WNBA is celebrating its 25th anniversary, and despite its ups and downs over the years, it’s safe to say it’s here to stay. One of its charter franchises, the New York Liberty, had been floundering for years as MSG CEO, and longtime Good Times reader James L. Dolan booted them from Madison Square Garden three years ago. The Libs were forced

to play in the tiny Westchester County Center until they were bought last year by Brooklyn Nets owner Joe Tsai who relocated them to Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. The greatest coach in Liberty history remains Richie Adubato who led them to three appearances in the WNBA Finals where they were always foiled by the superior Houston Comets. Adubato, a basketball lifer, has written his autobiography, Havin’ A Ball (University of Nebraska Press). Richie is a wonderful raconteur who details his harrowing days as a substitute teacher in tough Newark schools and the variety of mobsters he knew when he was tending bar. He talks about how one wiseguy he knew wants to attack Knicks guard Ernie Grunfeld because he hit a meaningless three-point shot which made him lose a $20,000 wager on the point spread. He also details his dealings with mercurial owners and execs in both the NBA and the WNBA. Havin’ A Ball is highly recommended. It was an exceptionally season for the New York Knicks who unexpectedly made the NBA playoffs for the first time in eight years. Head coach Tom Thibodeau was rightfully

honored by his peers as he was named Coach of the Year. The Knicks’ opening round loss to the Atlanta Hawks, who were led by elite guard Trae Young, was a stark reminder the Knicks still lack a superstar who is a playoff difference maker. I made my first appearance at Belmont Park in three years earlier this month for the draw determining post position for the 2021 Belmont Stakes which was won by Essential Quality. This event, which used to attract a throng of media, was sparsely attended. Even more depressing was seeing how much of Belmont Park’s beautiful leafy backyard area, where many baby boomers saw great and free concerts in the late 1970s and early 1980s, has been obliterated to make room for the new home of the New York Islanders, the UBS Arena. In fairness, this area has been very underutilized since the term of Ronald Reagan’s presidency. Kudos to the New York Racing Association for offering a free ticket to the 2022 Belmont Stakes for anyone who showed up at this year’s race and got a COVID-19 vaccine there.

trio revitalize Lavigne’s eradefining number. Arriving alongside the single is a John Frost-directed music video, which navigates viewers through several fractured dream states. Peering into the minds of Aoki, Yves V and Ryan Caraveo, the video highlights how

MARSHMELLO AND CARNAGE “BACK IN TIME”

Genre-blurring global superstar and 2021 iHeartRadio Dance Artist of the Year, Marshmello, teamed with dancefloor destroyer Carnage on the nostalgic rave anthem “Back In Time.” After a year of quietude and isolation, this new single is a well-timed return to the club—an ecstatic ode to long nights and good times. The track also arrives alongside a lighthearted, time-traveling video. With hits like “Happier” and “Alone”nestled in his boundary-pushing discography, it’s clear that Marshmello has always been interested in the emotional possibilities of dance music—theme that “Back In Time” furthers. Calling back to the energy of ‘90s rave tracks, the propulsion of classic techno, and the gleaming refractions of Eurodance, the song is energetic and nostalgic, perfect for creating new dancefloor memories while remembering all your favorite nights out. “Back In Time” arrives alongside a video that does what the title promises: it sends our two protagonists to bygone eras as Marshmello and Carnage go on an animated journey through prehistoric times back to the present. Lighthearted and bright, it’s a perfect accompaniment.

STEVE AOKI TRIBUTE TO AVRIL LAVIGNE

Steve Aoki, Yves V, and Ryan Caraveo join together to pay tribute to Avril Lavigne’s classic pop-punk single “Complicated.” Their modern makeover interpolates the famous earworm chorus, while adding a fresh set of introspective lyrics. With a crunchy electro pop soundscape and newly written verses, the

complicated the mind and self truly are, as the camera twists and turns through a series of complex dreams within dreams. “Complicated” marks the latest collaboration between Steve Aoki and Yves V since Yves remixed “A Lover And A Memory” off of Aoki’s Neon Future III LP. The long-time pals often cross paths at Tomorrowland, where Yves is a resident DJ and Aoki is a frequent headliner.

ELSA HEWITT RELEASES 'LUPA Elsa Hewitt is a London-based music producer and writer hailing from Sussex, via Yorkshire. Beginning as a young singersongwriter producing demos on a four-track, she progressed through fronting post-punk bands and solo electronic songwriting, all the while developing a passion for album-making which would ultimately lead her to electronic production, establishing her name producing avant-garde, experimental & ambient, left-field dance, and lo-fi, psychedelia. Since her 2017 official debut ‘Cameras From Mars’, stepping onto the scene as a Future Bubbler and Lynsey de Paul Prize winner, Hewitt has amassed a series of distinct yet interlinked philosophical worlds; each one holding its own tones of joyful beauty and abstract darkness. With a boundless approach to merging elements of dance & ambient, Hewitt’s adventurous approach remains pinned by her earthy voice, idiosyncratic songwriting style and sharply poetic lyricism.

HAILEY WHITTERS ON THE ROAD Iowa-born, Nashville-based rising Country star Hailey Whitters announced fall tour dates supporting Midland on THE LAST RESORT TOUR. Tickets went on sale May 7 for the tour that will make stops in Nashville, Chicago, Boston, New York and more. The announcement follows a short run of outdoor shows Midland and Whitters performed in Texas last month with Flatland Cavalry. Whitters also announced that she will perform at the Pilgrimage Music & Cultural Festival that takes place on September 25 & 26 in Franklin, TN. Find the full list of tour dates below and at HaileyWhitters.com. THE LAST RESORT TOUR marks another notch in an already busy year for the Nashville singer-songwriter. Following the critical acclaim of her 2020 album, THE DREAM, which topped many lists as one of the year’s best Country albums, Whitters returned with a deluxe edition in February, titled LIVING THE DREAM, calling upon her close friends and collaborators Brent Cobb, Jordan Davis, Hillary Lindsey, Little Big Town, Lori McKenna and Trisha Yearwood to contribute vocals to the new tracks.

JULIA MICHAELS RELEASES DEBUT ALBUM Not In Chronological Order, or NICO as she refers to it, is a 10song body of work that finds Julia sharing various chapters of her life in one place. “I’ve never been more vulnerable or as happy as I was putting this album together,” she said. “On many of these songs I’m speaking from a new perspective on love that is so much healthier and happier than I’ve experienced in the past,” she adds. “I’m excited to share a new side of me and hope fans love it as much as I do!” Written and recorded over the last year, the album was produced by production and songwriting team The Monsters & Strangerz. The album highlights countless facets of Julia—from the clever and confessional lyricism to the cheeky sense of humor and flawless knack for a signature, sticky, and soaring hook. She surveys each corner of her heart and gets real about life, love, and everything in between. You’ll hear her personality loud and clear on the pensively powerful “Pessimist,” crystallized in the dancefloor bounce of “Wrap Around,” amplified by the wideeyed infatuation of the synth-y “Orange Magic,” and wistfully nostalgic on the finger-picked guitar-driven finale “That’s The Kind Of Woman.”

A veteran to the Long Island Music scene, Joe keeps pushing the envelope, his latest effort being a new video. Joe and his wife Anna have been close friends with Blaize and George for more than fifteen years. Although they are all musicians, they had never played together until last summer. RHYTHM TRACKING

With Jimi LaLumia

SUMMERTIME This is the summer when music comes back to life; Major concerts are being announced for huge venues, featuring legendary names that have been kept on ice due to covid; bars and night clubs are set to re open, and interest in popular music reached a new all time high, with vinyl record sales going through the roof; people finding themselves homebound Photo: oliviarodrigo.com seemed to bond with music in ways that they haven't in decades. Popular music is the great unifier, whether singing along in the car, or going wild with the crowd in your favorite neighborhood gathering location. The clubs, the bars, big concert events are lining up, and people can't wait another minute before they dive back in, full force, ready to party and recover what they lost during the dark days behind us. Top 40 radio always rules the summer, and this year is no different; Z100 in NYC and Long Island's WBLI will keep the party going with a female led army of hit makers, while the concept of bands or groups seem obsolete as far as hit songs are concerned; the one big exception is the boy band known as BTS, still a worldwide phenomena; their latest, "Butta" is a current chart topper, duking it out with Olivia Rodrigo, whose still driving alone in her car

past that guy's street: That's a reference to "Driver's License", a monster sized hit that has dominated the airwaves for months, as her "Deja Vu" is enjoying an equally large impact, while her debut album zoomed right to the top of the Billboard chart. She is the pop success story of 2021, while associate female stars including Billie Elish, Dua Lipa, and the naughty Cardi B present the rear flank, literally. Male stars are still present; Bruno Mars has been leading the pack with the old school sounding "Leave The Door Open" a majestic slow burner of a love song, The Weeknd (yes, that's how he spells it) keeps the hits rolling, and amazingly, Maroon 5 have fought their way back onto Z100 with new music. In the old timer department (that's me), I was excited to find out that former Supremes lead singer Diana Ross is about to release a new single; imagine, if by some stroke of fate, she comes up with a hit? Well, I can dream... rock bands and and even pop groups are a rarity, at best, which is not a good sign for the world of pop. Let's see how summer progresses.

This culminates in the Performance Zone, where visitors enter an immersive audio-visual space, which includes Pink Floyd classic tracks as well as the recreation of the very last performance of David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Richard Wright, and Nick Mason, performing “Comfortably Numb” at Live 8 in 2005.
