Overcoming Lung Disease: A Benefit At The Nutty Irishman

A massive live music fundraising show, “Overcoming My Lung Disease: A Benefit For Don Michael Prager,” will take over on Monday, November 26 beginning at 5:30 pm at The Nutty Irishman in Farmingdale. Information on the club: (516) 293-9700; online donations: gofundme.com/don-michael-prager-needs-your-help. Admission is $30 at the door for this evening of music, featuring a handful of the area’s most popular club acts: J.D. Leonard & Friends, Wonderous Stories, Jimmy Kenny & The Pirate Beach Band, the Bruce J.D. Springsteen tribute Badlands, and The New York Leonard Bee Gees. Other attractions include a free buffeet, a Chinese auction, a 50/50 raffle, and more. The popular musician Robin Eve reported to us about Don Michael Prager and why this benefit was organized: “Our good friend and fellow musician, was diagnosed with the terminal lung disease Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), and he was given three to five years to live,” wrote Eve. “That was three and a-half years ago. Even though this is a Terminal Disease, there are treatments available that could extend Don’s life, but most of them are not covered by insurance and are too expensive to become an ‘out of pocket’ option without help. This music benefit was created, in conjunction with the GoFundMe link, to help pay for additional medical treatments, travel expenses for out-of-state medical treatments, as well as relieve some of the burden caused by debt accrued since Don’s terminal Jimmy Kenny & The Pirate diagnosis.” Beach Band Area fans and businesses that have products or services to donate for the Chinese Auction in advance of the benefit concert, write to RobinEveMusic @gmail.com to arrange for pick-up or drop off.

PERFORMANCE

Review by Bob Smith; photos by Helena Smith

It's easy to write off pop and rock bands from the 1970s as a bunch of geezers hanging on for some final paychecks on their ways to the retirement home – and yeah, in many cases, the acts deserve it. Once-great groups such as The Guess Who and Canned Heat slog on with few, or in some cases, no original members, delivering rote renditions of hits songs before audiences of near-seniors who couldn't tell who the replacement members were in the first place. P.T. Barnum lays peacefully, not even turning over. However, there’s also a shocking number acts who gained fame in the 1970s and remain vital and quite worthy as attractions – and two of of them were at full strength in the soncially superior Tilles Center on the same night.

Gnarly Karma

Tower Of Power Average White Band Tilles Center Brookville

Oogee Wawa Average White Band (above) is still led and fronted by Alan Gorrie and Onnie McIntyre, and buoyed by a tight combo featuring stellar saxophonists Fred Vigdor and Cliff Lyons. Sure, fans were there for “Pick Up The Pieces,” “Cut The Cake,” and “Work To Do,” but the off-the-charts musicianship and almost heavenly singing made this performance a true eye opener. The same can be said for Tower Of Power, Oakland's gift to funk that’s celebrating – brace yourelf – 50 years on the road. Still led by Emilio Castillo, the big, brassy bunch continues to pack a powerful punch, and their show hasn't changed amuch – even though new vocalist Marcus Scott (inset) suffers from oversinging-itis much of the time, even on classics. However, that's a slight quibble when watching and listening to a band so professional and swinging. Some members of AWB and TOP might need Just For Men, but their lively, enjoyable shows are for everybody of all ages.

that the team has had more losing seasons than winning ones, that line certainly resonated. While a lot has been written about Van Wagenen going from being a player agent to negotiating contracts on Yoenis the team's behalf, it’s a Cespedes lot of hot air; if anything, Jacob deGrom has to feel far more secure in his long-term future as a Met than he did when the season ended. Van Wagenen’s most noteworthy statement was that while most baseball general managers tend to keep a distant relationship with players because of the adversarial actions of salary negotiations and trades, Van Wagenen said that he wants to have solid professional relationships with every-

one on his roster. That may just be the agent in him talking right now. It will be interesting to see the new GM deals with one of his former clients, the notoriously aloof (and that’s being diplomatic) Yoenis Cespedes. In light of backup quarterback Kyle Lauletta’s legal woes stemming from resisting arrest following reckless driving in Weehawken, New Jersey, you have to wonder if The New York Giants will insert a defensive driving class requirement in future player contracts. Hardly anyone was aware that former Islanders CEO Charles Wang was suffering from lung cancer prior to the announcement of his death on October 21. The conventional wisdom that he was responsible for keeping The New York Islanders in our area has been mythified; the team’s $27 million television per annum broadcast rights contract with The MSG Network, which runs through 2031, combined with The National Hockey League’s understandable desire not to weaken its standing in the corporate capital of the world, were far bigger factors. What’s indisputable was that Wang gave blind loyalty to underlings who ran the franchise

into the ground; the team’s owners still turn a willful blind eye to the shabby treatment of the press. It’s an insular culture that apparently won’t ever change.

Creed II

Starring Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone, Tessa Thompson, Wood Harris, Russell Hornsby, Dolph Lundgren, Florian Munteanu, Phylicia Rashad Directed by Steven Caple Jr. Written by Sylvester Stallone MGM/Warner Bros. Opens November 21 It’s the eighth Rocky film, and it’s the second Creed film as well – and, if box office tallies are any indication, the audiencepleasing performance of Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed is going to perpetuate this series for years to come. If advance word is any indication, this could be yet another #1 for a series that has produced some knockouts (Rocky, Rocky 3) and some films that fell flat onto the canvas (Rocky V, Rocky IV). This time out, it’s a familiar story, but a gripping one: Adonis is balancing his personal life with working out for this next big fight. It’s gonna be emotional as well as physical: The opponent is the son of the Russian monster Ivan Drago, who was, other than Apollo Creed (Adonis’ father), the most serious opponent of Rocky Balboa’s career. According to the press notes: “Rocky Balboa is there by his side through it all and, together, Rocky and Adonis will confront their shared legacy, question what's worth fighting for, and discover that

nothing's more important than family.” This is for sure: In 2018, Rocky-themed films are far more popular than actual boxing is. That’s in large measure to the genius of Sylvester Stallone, who knows his acting limitations but who also can produce scripts full

of humanity and compassion. Consider: The first Rocky movie, which took both the film and sports worlds by storm, was released in 1976. Stallone’s status as one of cinema’s most incredible success stories will go down in history as an unprecidented achievement.

A few years back, celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito visited Umberto’s of New

Umberto’s Of New Hyde Park: A Slice Of Heaven Hyde Park for a slice of their “Grandma” pie – on a program called “The Best Thing I Ever Ate,” no less. However, we are here to put the “regular” or “cheese” slice in that same lofty category. It’s beyond perfect, melding Umberto’s one-of-a-kind pizza sauce (slightly sweet yet tangy) with just enough cheese, not drowning its slices in goo, but allowing the cheese to compliment the sauce. Add a chewy crust that’s never over- or under-cooked, and it’s something we know we’d be happy to eat every day for the rest of our working lives – and beyond, if possible. Here’s a tip: Sure, Umberto’s is known for its Italian fare – but did you know that it’s also become an area favorite for Thanksgiving dinner? If you’re not in the mood to cook, make a reservations here for a classic turkey dinner with all the trimmings; groups are welcome, and the regular menu will also be available on the holiday. Enjoy it all by logging on to originalumbertos.com; for reservations: (516) 437-9424. Calling All Bakers: The sixth annual Long Island Gingerbread and Chocolate House Competition is Saturday, December 8 at The Chocolate Duck in Farmingdale. If you bake, this is a contest for you – this year’s theme for entries is Winter Wonderland. The entries can be other structures; any Long Island-inspired Gingerbread or Chocolate house original creation can be part of the contest. The Chocolate Duck, located in Farmingdale Village, is hosting the competition, which includes both Gingerbread and Chocolate houses, adult and youth divisions, as well as amateur and open divisions. Prizes will be awarded in each division, including a 32” TV, cash, and gift certificates. Entry deadline is December 6. The competition opens to the public at noon. Mohegan Sun (CT): So much is happening at Connecticut's Mohegan Sun that we're devoting this issue’s column to it: Lots of changes are happening at this popular destination spot this winter. Mohegan Sun’s Comix club is expanding to include Roadhouse, a new country bar and restaurant. The upgraded state-ofthe-art venue will provide true "roadhouse" entertainment, featuring live country music, mechanical bull riding, a Texas-style food menu, 30 craft beers on tap, a full bar, and even line dancing. Guests can enjoy a mix of regional country bands, local performers, and entertainment on the new Roadhouse stage. The club will continue to offer its popular stand-up comedy and alternative entertainment in the Comix Comedy Club section

of the venue. The menu will feature authentic Texas-style offerings such as smoked brisket, pulled pork, and more of a focus on farm fresh ingredients delivered daily, along with Comix classics. Craft beers include local favorites Beer'd, Two Roads, and Lawson's, as well as popular choices from across the country, including New Belgium, Stone and Elysian. Mixologists on the Comix team will present a special countrythemed cocktails list utilizing favorite whiskeys and liquor, along with a host of drink recipes that are new to the area. Also coming to Mohegan Sun is one of the biggest tours of 2019, and perhaps of the decade: Pop superstar Ariana Grande wperforming live at Mohegan Sun Arena on Saturday, March 30 at 7:30 pm; we’d suggest making plans early, since most of Grande’s concerts are early sellouts. Tickets are now on sale through Ticketmaster. Ticketmaster customers may log on to Ticketmaster.com, or call (800) 745-3000. Tickets are also available at the Mohegan Sun Box Office, subject to availability. At age 25, Ariana Grande – just Grande: coming off an She’ll Flip over-publicized Mohegan split with Sun Upside “Saturday Night Down Live” star Pete Davidson – has delivered three platinum-selling albums and surpassed 18 billion streams, in addition to nabbing four Grammy Award nominations and landing eight hits in the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. With Dangerous Woman, Grande went to #1; Sweetener, her new album, has done the exact same thing.

A great festival is one that is not only well organized, but also has contingencies in place when things don’t go as planned; it's paramount to a successful weekend of fun. Case in point: At the recent Freaky Deaky festival on October 27 and 28 in

With Richard Joseph Branciforte Houston, the weather wasn’t on the side of the festival organizers. With constant rain, head honcho Disco Donnie required a plan to make sure the weekend went off without a hitch – and, happily, Freaky Deaky exceeded expectations and delivered a stellar weekend filled with positivity. Thousands of man hours were spent making sure the grounds were usable and accessible; thousands of pounds of

Brooklyn. The date is November 24, and an event like no other is about to take place: Rowmuda Triangle, put on by the Elrow brand. The Rowdmuda Triangle is one of the immersive experiences that Elrow puts on in more than 70 cities throughout the world. The idea is unique but simple enough that has me thinking why don’t other people do this all the time? This is a carnival for grownups, and will put you into a different world. The theme is about a giant storm tipping over a sailboat, getting eaten by a giant beast, and leaving everyone underwater for the “Party Of Eternal Happiness” inside the monster's belly. As you can imagine, the event will be decked out from side-to-side with thousands of custom-designed decorations, 150 costumed performers, and some incredible talent in Steve Lawler, Yousef, De La Swing, wAFF, Acid Mondays, and Andres Campo. I have been to a lot of music festivals and concerts in my time, and this experience is going to be like no other. Elrow goes above and beyond to make you feel like you are one with your surroundings, and it’s truly awe inspiring. I love the idea they have set forth here: People go to electronic music events to lose themselves, be part of something bigger, and to escape whatever reality they live in from day to day. So if that’s what people are aiming for, why not create an environment that will truly sweep them into another dimension? Hope to see you all back here very soon – and remember, keep raging my friends! Feel free to reach out at richiegtechno@gmail.com.

Overcoming Lung Disease: A Benefit At The Nutty Irishman

Robert Wagner Honored At Gold Coast Arts Center’s Film Festival Gala

The Gold Coast Arts Center in Great Neck recently honored actor Robert Wagner, who received the second annual Burton Moss Hollywood Golden Era Award in recognition of his career that began in 1950 with his film debut in The Happy Years. The event raised funds for the nonprofit Arts center and its Gold Coast International Film Festival, which started on November 2. Joining Wagner was his wife, actress Jill St. John; his daughter, Courtney Wagner, actress Sharon Gless and her husband, producer Barney Rosenzweig, and Princess Yasmin Aga Khan. Talent agent Budd Burton Moss also attended the event in tribute to his childhood friend. Diane Baker and Larry King sent best wishes via video. Also in attendance were Harriet Fields, granddaughter of the late W.C. Fields, and renowned film historian and film professor, Foster Hirsch, who moderated a discussion with Wagner before the presentation of the award. More information can be found at goldcoastfilmfestival.org.

More: BØRNS Live At Amoeba Music In Hollywood EP; Alice Cooper Live From The Astroturf Full Performance; new songs, remixes and tributes adorn singles on the RSD Black Friday list from Sting & Shaggy, Kacey Musgraves, U2, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, BABYMETAL, The Joy Formidable, A Perfect Circle, Paul McCartney, Ray LaMontagne, Dio, Night Beats, and more. If you “need a little Christmas,” Keith Richards will celebrate the 40th anniversary of his first solo release (which was actually a holiday song!) with a 12” red vinyl special of “Run Rudolph Run.” More holiday music comes on RSD Black Friday from Lindsey Stirling, Eric Clapton, Green River, the artists of the Prestige label, Unwritten Law, and more (including Emmet Otter’s one-time nemesis, The Riverbottom Nightmare Band). Among the independent record stores in the area who are participating in Black Friday are the venerable Looney Tunes in West Babylon, Record Stop in Shirley, Newbury Comics in Garden City, Mr. Cheapo in Mineola, Infinity Records in Massapequa Park, and High Fidelity Records in Amityville. The “vinyl revival” is one of the most heartening things about the current music scene – and if you haven’t gotten into the rich, warm sound of LPs, this is a great time to get (or gift) a new turntable and discover a whole new/old world of listening pleasure.

Tove Lo: 'Blue Lips' Gets People Talking

Honey County: New, Sweet Sounds

California-based country trio Honey County has released the remix of their single “Los Angeles,” which was originally released in 2017. The single can be found can be found on Apple Music, Amazon Music, Spotify, and Pandora. "We couldn't have been more excited to hear our song 'Los Angeles' on the NFL Network's post-game recap for the Rams! We're so thankful to Attique Iqbal for making it happen and of course Justin Burk for lending his amazing remix talents!" said the group’s Katie Stump. Follow Honey County on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube.

This is different, from an artist that is totally different: Tove Lo has released her latest short film titled Blue Lips. Starring Tove Lo and Ana Coto, the short features music from her album of the same title, and was co-written by the Swedish artist and director Malia James. Blue Lips follows the nighttime adventures of friends Ebba (Lo) and Kit (Coto), as they blur the lines between reality, sex, and their friendship, dipping in and out of induced highs, lows, nightclubs, and bathtubs. To see the 25-minute Blue Lips film, find it on to YouTube and Vevo.

Little Steven Is Big On Education

Little Steven & The Disciples Of Soul's “Teacher Solidarity Tour” has registered more than 10,000 teachers to use The TeachRock Music History Curriculum. The tour is accepting registrations as it continues through December 16. Stevie Van Zandt, who refers to educators as the "front line in the war on ignorance," launched the tour to demonstrate his support for teachers at a time marked by wage cuts, crumbling school infrastructure, a lack of funding, and widespread teacher strikes. More than moral support, the tour presents a nightly workshop – a lesson in which RRFF staff and Van Zandt himself present concepts and content that empower K-12 teachers of all disciplines to use music in their classrooms. As Van Zandt puts it: "This is a little different than the professional development experience you may be used to. This is a rock & roll experience."

Anna Shoemaker

The Still Red-Hot Cardi B: She’s All About The ‘Money”

One of the music world’s biggest-selling artists, Cardi B, is riding high again with her new single, “Money.” This marks the first solo release from Cardi B since her debut album, Invasion Of Privacy. It came fresh on the heels of Cardi’s sit-down interview on “Jimmy Kimmel Live in Brooklyn” – her first official interview since giving birth earlier this year. Cardi B recently performed the gold-certified hit “Get Up 10” as well as “Backin’ It Up” alongside Pardison Fontaine at The 2018 BET Hip Hop Awards. Cardi also took home four awards that night – the most of any artist for the second year in a row – MVP Of The Year, Sweet 16: Best Featured Verse, Made-You-Look Awards, and Hustler Of The Year. She also took to the stage at the 2018 American Music Awards to perform the smash “I Like It” with J. Balvin and Bad Bunny, where she won three more awards trophies.

'East Side' Is All Around Town The 23-year-old sudden star Anna Shoemaker creates music that propels her beyond the realm of similar artists. Drawing various pop elements with her dreamy, hypnotic vocals, Shoemaker has created a unique sound that stands out. Her new EP, East Side, has been making waves sinces its September debut . Prior to the EP release, the young singer has been teasing fans with strippeddown versions of some of her upcoming music. The series “Bedroom Demos" was released exclusively on SoundCloud, and it really took off: the series has already garnered more than 40,000 cumulative plays.

This Is My Column By Rich Branciforte 10,000 Line Streets to Honor Good Times Founder (Billy Joel Also There)

The Inside Story at the L.I. Music Hall of Fame Awards They came on skateboards and in limos, in wheelchairs and with walkers, all there for one purpose, to honor the 2018 inductees into The Long Island Music Hall of Fame at The Space at Westbury. I was humbled by the crush of fans as our 1963 Thunderbird pulled up to the Red Carpet. This was the largest turnout of humanity since the Trump inauguration; the historic moment was not lost on me. Now I know how Paul McCartney feels. The crowd, many who had been camped out since 6 am to get a view of the famed publisher nd the other inductees surged towards the car, holding up copies of Good Times, shouting “1262”, “1262” which was either a reference to the fact this was our 1262nd issue or that the LIRR was due at 12:62. How to get out of the car and onto the Red Carpet? Easy ... someone shouted out “This guy’s not Billy Joel,” and soon the crowd parted. Pushing past the TV and press cameras, we made our way to our table, which was right up front. Already seated was my presenter, Jackie “The Jokeman” Martling and his girlfriend, both looking rather spiffy. Jackie looks particularly fit, it’s apparent he doesn’t spend his time at Chinese buffets like yours truly. Also at our table was the legendary Seymour Stein, who discovered Madonna, Blondie and just about anyone else who counts, sitting next to WLIR superstar Dennis McNamara. The awards started promptly at 8:30: Let the show begin! Early inductees included Eliot Murphy, who put on a regal set, and “Hired Gun” inductee Tommy Byrnes, who plays with Billy Joel, Joan Jett, you name it. Before he went up, I apologized to Tommy for the 1976 Good Times review of his band, The BMTs. He ripped the place apart, it’s easy to see why all these famous musicians want him to be part of their band. Throughout the night, hundreds of members of the audience came over to our table for autographs, and the occasional comment, “You don’t look as old as I thought you’d be. You have a young voice.” Someone tell that to my body. Soon, the second biggest moment of the night: Billy Joel arrived with his wife and young daughter, and were seated at

the table directly behind us. I tried to talk to him, but the very large gentlemen around him intervened. Then I remembered what had happened to several over zealous fans who had been removed by Space security and brought down to the Space catacombs to be “rehabilitated.” Billy was sweating a bit, so I finally made my way over to comfort him. “What’s the matter man, you’re not still pissed about that 1987 review of your album

that you called the Good Times office to complain about, are you?” “No, I’m past that,” he said. “It’s just that I get nervous every time I have to give a speech onstage, and I’m inducting two guys tonight.” “Think of your music as the words, and your piano as the pen,” I advised him. He nodded. I moved forward and started to massage his jaw, just like my dentist, Dr. Vinciguerra, does when he’s about to

do root canal on me.” “Better,” Billy said. “That’s why you’re an icon, I guess.” Billy made his way to the stage, did damn well for a guy that’s only been on stage two million times, and even let us in on a secret. “Wow, this place is really nice,” he said. Perhaps this was a clue that his 11,000th Garden show might be held at The Space. (Side to Cyrus: If I was handling your PR, I’d milk that quote for all it’s worth. Just saying). Spoke briefly to former Columbia Records president Ron Alexenburg (who signed Michael Jackson amongst

others),who told us he’s working on a book which will be released in April, and that Good Times is mentioned in it, but wouldn’t say anything more. Back to the stage, and we caught fellow inductees Taking Back Sunday and Melanie. A great induction was Cousin Brucie, who is as humble as he seems, ready to talk to anyone who approached him. Earlier, he had confessed that years ago he used

to stay up till 2 a. to catch my WLIR local show, Good Times Presents The Long Island Sound and loved the fact that they put me on in the middle of the night, “when there was nothing else to listen to.” Couldn’t help noticing as we approached 11:30 pm, that the audience was starting to get smaller and yawning quite a bit. Had to put a leg clamp on Jackie, since it looked liked he was going to bolt at any minute; he kept mumbling something about having to get to the gym. Unfortunately, I had let LIMHOF head honcho Jim Faith call in an IOU: “Rich,” Jim

a short set. Suddenly, the place was alive! Finally, Jackie and I were in the wings onstage, and after 200 kids from the local school performed an excellent number honoring their teacher, it was our turn. Jackie came out, did a spectacular introduction that out of kindness to our audience was only a minute and a half long. The man knows timing. Then it was my turn; I love being onstage, and could easily have gone on for several hours, but was advised by Barry Fisch earlier, “Make it quick, we’re running late.” So, four hours and 15 minutes after we had started, I gave my schtick, told the usual Hendrix and Duane Allman stories, and absorbed the vibes. It was great. Aside from thanking my third grade school teacher who had put me in remedial speech because I had a lisp, I want to thank Ernie, Barry, Jim, Norm and the whole LIMHOF crew, who did a remarkable job putting this together. You can’t imagine how much work goes into this. Also want to thank my editor Bob Smith, Craig Cardone, my art director, and two unsung heroes, Barry Oliver and Paul Timmons, who have delivered Good Times to more than 400 locations for a combined 32 years. As we move forward into our 50th anniversary year, thanks to all our readers who go out of their way every two weeks to pick up Good Times. And to all the doubters out there, print is not dead: Just ask Jeff Bezos.

said. “We need you to do us a big favor. We need to have you inducted dead last, it’s the only way to keep the crowd. They’re here for you man, help us out. Billy and everyone would be indebted.” Having a big heart, I agreed. Moving right along, we had the induction of EPMD, and they absolutely smashed it. They were very humble in their acceptance and then proceeded to rip the join apart with
