A Star Is Born

Starring Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper, Sam Elliott, Dave Chappelle, Andrew Dice Clay Produced & directed by Bradley Cooper Warner Bros. Pictures There's Britney, Katy, Beyoncé, Adele, and on and on the list of pop stars goes – but after this incredible performance by Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta – better known as Lady Gaga – there is no question who the most talented person in the pop realm is. After her performance in one of the best films of 2018, she may add an Academy Award to her huge list of accomplishments. There's Dwayne, Vin, Tom, Tom, Samuel, and on the list of big box office screen actors goes – but after the directorial effort of Bradley Cooper in this fourth version of the rags-toriches music story, he, too, has become a serious filmmaker and a force to be reckoned with; his career path may resemble other stars turned directors such as Clint Eastwood. Gaga and Cooper together in this rousing, riveting film are pure electricity and passion; both deliver realistic, heartfelt performances. It's a simple, stripped down, likable Gaga as singer and songwriter (yet still waitress) Ally, who is discovered by country star Jackson Maine (Cooper), and Ally, with more than a bit of reluctance, gets taken under the established musician's wing, and romance blooms.

However, it's not all sweetness and light: Maine loves the bottle, and Ally has already had to deal with a father (a shockingly good Andrew Dice Clay) that also hits the sauce. Add in a brother (Elliott) that Maine isn't seeing eye to eye with, add Maine's personal demons and impending hearing loss – not to mention Ally's skittish steps toward her own career, along with a overbearing manager (Gavron) that makes her over in order to get “bigger” – and it adds up to real drama. However, it's Gaga's musical performances

(and believable, understated acting) throughout the film, not to mention her chemistry with Cooper, that make this as much fun as it is stirring. Sure, Gaga once wore a meat dress, and early on she seemed to have an aversion to wearing anything at all – but after her performances at The Oscars and in this film, she's on the verge of going from pop star to a true entertainment legend in her own right. As for Cooper: All that, and he can sing, too? Music fans: Miss this outstanding, nearly perfect film at your own risk.

The New York Jets’ lopsided 48-17 opening game victory over The Detroit Lions now seems to be a cruel fluke for Jets fans in light of consecutive losses to the mediocre Miami Dolphins and the lowly Cleveland Browns, who did not win a game

in 2017. No one expected the Jets to be playing in the Super Bowl in Atlanta this coming February, but finishing with eight wins seemed to be a reasonable goal. That may be still be the case, but the lack of a pass rush combined with undisciplined penalties (which always come back to affect the final score in favor of the opposing team) have quickly placed head coach Todd Bowles’ job in jeopardy. Quarterback Sam Darnold appears to have the raw talent to succeed, but needs time to learn the NFL. If the team continues Wilmer to flounder, it may not be Flores the worst idea to have Josh McCown start and let Darnold learn from the sidelines carrying a clipboard. There is no shame in that. David Wright’s retirement because of back stenosis and neck nerve impingement issues overshadowed the fact that utility player and fan favorite Wilmer Flores was shut down 10 days before the end of the season by The New York Mets

For Our Veterans: The Bowlers to Veterans Link (BVL) recently recognized five single center operations, five chain operations, and two individuals as “BVL’s Best” at The International Bowl Expo in Las Vegas. The awards were based

because of a diagnosis of the onset of arthritis in his knees. Flores' baseball future now looks murky at best. The Mets will be moving up the AM dial next season as they wills hift their radio home from WOR 710 to WCBS 880. It will be interesting to see whether Entercom, the owner of both WFAN and WCBS, will retain Wayne Randazzo for Mets pre- and post-game shows, or if they will ask Ed Coleman, who deftly handled that chore for years on “the FAN,” to resume that role. Pete McCarthy, the host of WOR’s “Sports Zone” weekday nights, is an early casualty of the Mets’ radio change. WOR is canceling his show now that it no longer has the rights to Mets broadcasts. Best wishes to longtime Mets’ vice president of media relations Jay Horwitz, who will now serve as the team’s alumni relations director. The Mets have a glaring weakness in honoring their past heroes, as is evidenced by their lack of old-timers days and Hall of Fame ceremonies. Horwitz will have the same job that Phillies PR director Larry Shenk took after serving in that role for 40 years. Shenk admits that he is basically retired. Expect Jay to report to Citi Field every day. On the topic of public relations, congratulations to The Philadelphia Flyers media relations department, long the gold standard in the National Hockey League, for winning The 2018 Dick Dillman Award presented by the Professional Hockey Writers Association to the on efforts during the 2016-17 season. “BVL has benefitted tremendously from the continuing and growing support from the bowling center community,” said BVL executive director Mary Harrar. “Each year, more and more centers are getting involved in our mission to brighten the lives of America’s veterans as they see for themselves the profound impact of their support.”

BVL: Carrying On With Its Good Works

Centers involved in the BVL effort created a variety of programs and campaigns, from passing the hat to national tournaments. Last year, BVL received contributions from more than 180 centers. “At BVL, a dollar goes a long way, and we appreciate every donation we receive; however, we did think it important to recognize our power hitters for BVL,” said Harrar. John LaSpina's Maple Family Centers, which include RVC Lanes nad JIB Lanes, ranked at the top multi-unit center contributations, with $57,749 donated. Among the top single center contributors was Rab’s Country Lanes in Staten

Sam Darnold NHL team that goes beyond the call of duty in helping journalists do their job and making them feel welcome. That’s another trophy besides The Stanley Cup that the Islanders won’t be winning in the foreseeable future. At a preseason meeting with the media, New York Knicks general manager Scott Perry and team president Steve Mills said that while they admired the talents of disgruntled Minnesota Timberwolves star Jimmy Butler, they won’t give up valuable draft choices for him. That is a radical and welcome change from past personnel practices. The NBA released a report on September 19 that charged that The Dallas Mavericks, under former team president Terdema Ussery, created a hostile work environment for the team’s female Island, which donated $2,500. Additionally, BVL made two awards for special service: The Service Award was presented to Rockford, Illinois-based Don Carter Lanes President John Sommer, who has a decades-long record of leadership in BVL, including the launch of the “Lanes For The Troops” program and the “Bowl For Freedom” campaign. Jamie Brooks, proprietor of Cowtown Bowl in Ft. Worth, Texas and Plano Super Bowl in Texas, received the Special Project Award for coordinating a fundraiser to provide an all-track wheelchair for a Ft. Worth area veteran. Super Joe: Joe Scianna of Ronkonkoma swept both the scratch and handicap marathon titles at AMF Garden City Lanes, which hosted the LIGBT’s recent five-game marathon. In the handicap event, Scianna defeated top seed Antonino Dilluvio of Flushing, 247-207, to claim the $1,000 top prize; Dilluvio collected $500 for second place. In the scratch event, Scianna earned an additional $400 with a 1,232 series, the top five-game total. In the semi-final match of the handicap event, Scianna shot a robust 285 game to advance to the final shootout. Finishing in third place was senior bowler Shiu Lee of Forest Hills, with a 239 worth $300; in fourth place was seven-time LIGBT champion Dexter Sapp of Valley Stream, with a 218 worth $250. The bonus scratch marathon paid out three spots; Scianna (left) won the event with a 1,232 series earning $400. Second place went to Carl Worley of Staten Island, with an 1,192 worth $200, and third place was taken by Andrew Mienkiewicz of Massapequa, with an 1,148 worth $130. employees. Team owner Mark Cuban was not blamed in the report, except for not providing stringent oversight over his chauvinistic subordinates. In light of the report, he made a $10 million contribution to various women’s

organizations. The NBA is renowned for being culturally sensitive – yet this report was released on Yom Kippur, the holiest and most solemn day in Judaism. Both NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and Cuban are Jewish, and both were forced to comment that day. There is no reason why the investigation report could not have been released either the day before of the day after the Day of Atonement. If you are old enough to remember the pro football spring football confederation known as The United States Football League (it lasted from 1983 through 1985), be sure to pick up a copy of Jeff Pearlman’s latest book, Football For A Buck (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt). Pearlman highlights the stars of the USFL who went onto have success in the NFL such as Jim Kelly, Steve Young, and Herschel Walker, but also Adam takes pains to pay tribute to Silver terrific yet forgotten USFL stars as Chuck Fusina and Kelvin Bryant. Pearlman takes particular gusto in profiling colorful characters as defensive end Greg Fields, who would routinely physically assault team coaches whenever he was cut, and linebacker John Corker, who prided himself on being the most well-endowed player in the USFL and was not shy in showing why in postgame locker room interviews. The author also devotes considerable pages to an egomaniacal New Jersey Generals owner who forced the

USFL to switch from playing in the spring to competing with the NFL in the fall, and in doing so destroyed the league. According to Pearlman, this owner’s objective was to leave the USFL and have his team be welcomed in the NFL. The owner’s name: Donald Trump. Rafael Nadal aspires to be the Jack Nicklaus of tennis. “The Golden Bear,” in addition to being one of the greatest golfers in history, also helped design golf courses at resorts all over the world. Music Speaks Out East: The Stars Align For Cancer Research

Rat Race Choir

Veteran Rocker Goes Solo At Parkside

Veteran New York rocker Bill Popp, who has long fronted the popular group Bill Popp & The Tapes, will perform songs from his first solo CD, Bill Popp Solo, on Wednesday, October 24 starting at 6:30 pm with a CD release party at The Parkside Lounge in New York City. Guests will receive a copy of the album at at the door. The evening will feature a live solo performance by Popp, with other guest solo performers to follow. The 13-song album consists of Popp’s vocals and piano stylings (and on a pair of the songs, he plays on kazoo as well). Bill Popp & The Tapes have been a fixture in the New York music scene for more than 37 years. Through the years, the band’s strong musicianship, Popp’s songwriting and vocal ability, and their robust harmonies have won the group favorable reviews in publications both national and local, including this one.

The veteran area rock legends Rat Race Choir (above) headline a special concert event, “Music Speaks Out East,” to raise money for cancer research on Saturday, October 20 at VailLeavitt Music Hall in Riverhead. For tickets: Log on to brownpapertickets.com (search under “Music Speaks Out East”); for more information: Thevail.org. Doors open at 6 pm for this event. Also on the bill for this concert will be the international rock artist Jack Art, hailing from Paris; the red hot area band and recording artists The Walk-A-Bout (above); and the Led Zeppelin tribute group Zeppasaurous (right). Other attractions will be a Chinese auction, raffles of guitars signed by major music celebrities, refreshments, and more. This charity effort is being led by Long Island’s Steven Meinster, who is dedicating this show to his son, who tragically passed away from cancer in December. LI’s Artist’s ‘Suicide Love’ Is Alive

Following the release of her song “Face Down” in 2017, the young Long Island-based artist Vaeda Black returns with a new single, “Suicide Love,” to be released tomorrow (October 10). With a music video to follow directed by James Morano with choreography A.C. Ciulla, the song is a passionate visualization of being consumed by love and lost in emotion. Black performed at The Long Island Fall Festival on October 7; tonight (October 9) she will appear at Arlene’s Grocery in New York City. Raised in Centerport, Vaeda Black is the pseudonym of 16-year-old singer/songwriter Celia Spero, a senior at both Harborfields High School and Long Island High School for the Arts. She has earned plaudits for her powerful voice reminiscent of early soul legends; she's also a songwriter who is able to tap into a profound and sometimes dark place, which is reflected in her music both lyrically and sonically. Performances with her band display her ability to connect with audiences – a skill she's developed from years on stage, having performed in musical theater productions starting at only seven years old. Check out Vaeda Black's songs on Spotify and iTunes; to learn more, log on to VaedaBlack.com, or find her at Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and on her YouTube channel.

oco – the first, and in the eyes of many, the greatest country rock group in the genre's history – is in the midst of its 50th year as a touring act, and its current tour will bring them back to Port Washington on October 14 at The Landmark On Main Street. Rusty Young & Company To Rock The Landmark On Main Street Young, a magician on pedal steel guitar, dobro, and acoustic guitar who was an early inductee into the Guitar Player Magazine Hall Of Fame. A couple of years back, Poco stopped touring for a short spell – but demand for the veteran band prompted them to keep on, buoyed by the songwriting and singing of bassist Jack Sundrud. During the spring, Young also released the first solo album of his career, Waitin’ For The Sun. In 1967, Young was a young musician from Denver was invited to play steel guitar on what would become the final album by Buffalo Springfield. Soon after, he – along with Richie Furay, George Grantham, and Jim Messina – would form the seminal West Coast country rock band Poco. Over the next five decades, alongside band mates that would also include Paul Cotton, Randy Meisner, and Timothy B. Schmit, Young became

not only the musical core of the band, but also the writer and vocalist behind hits including “Rose Of Cimarron” and the hit single “Crazy Love.” “I’d intended to retire from the road,” said Young. “I was certainly slowing down, wanting nothing more than to spend more time at home gardening and fishing – but a fan reached out saying that he had a new artist-friendly record label and asked if I would consider a solo project. I had been offered solo deals back in the ’70s, but always felt Poco was more important. But I feel I’m now the best I’ve ever been as a singer and songwriter, and I have a better grasp of the music than ever before. And I realized that this was the perfect time to do something that could be a really rewarding part of my legacy.”

Produced by Young and longtime Poco member Sundrud – with assistance from the legendary Bill Halverson (Crosby, Stills & Nash, Eric Clapton, Emmylou Harris) and mixed/ mastered by Joe Hardy (ZZ Top, Steve Earle, The Replacements) – the album has garnered a surprising amount of airplay, and as well earned both Young and Poco a number of new fans as younger listeners are discovering the band’s catalog as if it was new music. These days, the still-vibrant Poco consists of Sundrud (bass, vocals), Young (practically every form of stringed instrument known to man), keyboardist and multi-instrumentalist Michael Webb, and the band’s newest member, former Flying Burrito Brothers drummer Rick Lonow.

PERFORMANCE

Panic! At The Disco • NYCB Live At Nassau Coliseum Uniondale

Pop rock icons Panic! At The Disco once again made headlines with the release of their sixth studio album; Pray For The Wicked, gaining strong reviews since its release in June – and the album performed well enough that the act sold out this performance. Lead singer (and only remaining original member) Brendon Urie erupted on stage with the opener “(F*#@k A) Silver Lining,” sounding as fresh and clear as ever. Urie and the band glided through a 28-song set with sheer ease. Being heavily influenced by his recent performance in Kinky Boots (the Broadway musical featuring lyrics by Cyndi Lauper and a book by Harvey Fierstein), Urie danced and smiled on the arena stage throughout evening, enjoying the night as he performed song after song in his own unique style. Ending the evening with the appropriate-for-the-moment “Victorious,” the band headed to Madison Square Garden five days later, and delivered another performance reportedly as sterling as this one.

Folk Star Kate Campbell Takes A Walk On The Sunday Street

Singer/songwriter Kate Campbell makes her Long Island debut on Sunday, October 14 at 5 pm in The Sunday Street Series at The Long Island Museum in Stony Brook. Advance tickets at $22 are available at sundaystreet.org through October 12; tickets at the door are $27. Over the course of her career, Campbell has set forth on a musical journey rooted in the stories of people connected with the modern south. Her vocal delivery and gift for storytelling have drawn repeated comparisons to such bastions of the Southern literary tradition as Flannery O’Connor, William Faulkner, and Eudora Welty. Originally from the Mississippi Delta and the daughter of a Baptist preacher, Campbell’s formative years were spent in the core of the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s.

Rhythm Tracking With Jimi LaLumia

Kinky Again: It was great to be 13 in 1965, and to have access to a cheap Japanese transistor radio. The tinny AM sounds of Motown and the UK dominated this teenager's life. While The Beatles and The Rolling Stones shared time with The Supremes and Martha & The The Kinks, Vandellas in my 1965 groovy go-go world, there was one band that always held my attention, being so unique whether with the trans anthem "Lola" or the pop culture statement "Dedicated Follower Of Fashion," and that band was and is The Kinks. This band brought the dynamics of what would eventually become punk rock, with singles such as "All Day And All Of The Night" and the iconic "You Really Got Me" – and they went through musical transitions that remained relevant right into the MTV '80s, outliving their fellow travelers in that regard. I was beyond thrilled to hear

that Ray and Dave Davies, the founding brothers of The Kinks, are in talks to reunite once again, and will bring their Kink-dom to a generation that may not be as hip to their legacy as they should be.

The Kinks never seem receive the reverence due them, and so a reunion tour and album can and should set the record straight. In the midst of all that, Dave Davies is dropping a new solo album, which we will deal with next time around; Dave is a hard-working touring act and has kept the light in the window glowing with crowd pleasing gigs from coast to coast.

Harris & History: Country Music Hall of Fame member Emmylou Harris will be featured in an exhibition, Emmylou Harris: Songbird’s Flight, opening October 5 at The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville. The exhibit will run until August 4, 2019. The exhibit will explore the journeys of an artist who has, for nearly 50 years, captivated both her industry peers and her music fans. Johnny Cash called Harris his favorite female vocalist, and Bruce Springsteen hails her as a national treasure. The exhibit will tell her story and expand her legacy by sharing her music with museum visitors, who number more than on million annually. Harris released her first major label album in 1975, and in the years since

Country

Emmylou Harris

If you get the chance to see him solo, it's an absolute must – and if we all get the chance to see The Kinks once again, well, what more can I possibly express. Cher Alike: Speaking of 1965 and my transistor radio, well, there has always been Cher, decade after decade (back then, it was Sonny & Cher, and the iconic "I Got You Babe" was a new hit single, which Cher I bought with starvation-inducing school lunch money). Cher has managed to ride her own wave and remain relevant through five decades of contemporary pop music. Now, she comes back strong with a tribute album of ABBA songs, and at press time it looked like it would be a potential #1 album. The stars of the first few decades of rock & roll came up through the ranks in a different manner, and seem to enjoy more sturdy staying power than many of the MTV generation. The Kinks and Cher are shining examples of that.

she has brought millions of listeners to country music. She had seven #1 country hits and 14 Top 10 country albums on the Billboard country charts, and in early 2018 the Recording Academy presented her with a Lifetime Achievement Award. “From my first album, in 1975, the country music world has embraced me with open arms,” Harris said. “This exhibit at the Hall of Fame makes me realize once more how grateful and honored I am to be part of such a remarkable musical family.” A champion of worthy songwriters and musicians, Harris gave early career boosts to Rodney Crowell, Buddy Miller, Ricky Skaggs, Gillian Welch, and others. Many country singers cite Harris as an influence, including Suzy Bogguss, Mary Chapin Carpenter, The Dixie Chicks, Patty Loveless, and Trisha Yearwood. Emmylou Harris: Songbird’s Flight includes many unique items, such as Harris’ first guitar, a Kay 1160 Deco Note built circa 1965, and a jacket designed by Manuel Cuevas that Harris wore on the cover of the album Trio, and in performance with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt.
