Crazy Rich Asians
Starring Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Gemma Chan, Harry Shum Jr., Awkwafina, Sonoya Mizuno Directed by Jon M. Chu Warner Bros. Pictures Here’s a tip of the cap to Warner Brothers Pictures, which obviously knew something that few others did: They saw Kevin Kwan’s 2013 novel ringing up sales in bookstores and Amazon.com, and took a flyer on making the story into a full-blown major motion picture. The geniuses at Warner accomplished not one but four things by doing this: They scored a legitimate late summer hit duing the dog days of August as the film whooshed by The Meg, Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Disney’s Christopher Robin, the never-had-a-chance The Happytime Murders, and other touted films to debut at #1 at the box office; they scored a #1 with a romcom (this reminds us so much of My Big Fat Greek Wedding in this respect); they brought an Asian audience to cineplexes in droves throughout the United States and Canada; and they managed to be smart enough to pretty much plan a sequel as soon as the orignial promotional posters for Crazy Rich Asians were hung on theater windows. Fact: Crazy Rich Asians is the first bigbudget Hollywood film to feature an all-Asian
cast since The Joy Luck Club in 1993. However, that’s only really about five percent of the story here: This film is the type of joyful night at the movies that Hollywood rarely provides any longer, a throwback to every type of romantic film – think Doris and Rock, or Tom and Meg – that used to kill at the box office time and again. Like My Big Fat Greek Wedding, this involves a couple, Rachel (Wu) and Nick (Golding) fall head over heels for each other ... and all heck breaks loose when
their families get involved. As it turns out, Nick’s family is richer than Cadbury Eggs; he brings her to meet them, they think she’s out for his money ... well, it’s more fun than that might read, thanks to briliant, heartfelt performances and a wealth of laughs peppered in between the romance and tumult. Remember date movies? If you’re a guy, we suggest seeing this one with your favorite girl – if she hasn’t already taken you to the 12-plex by this point.

… It wouldn’t be a new TV season without more Dick Wolf: CBS introduces “FBI”; Missy Peregrym and Jeremy Sisto star ... The biggest news for this year: This will be the 12th and final season of the mega-hit comedy “The Big Bang Theory,” which will surely prove to leave a gaping black hole in the CBS schedule next year. The series is coming to its end after Jim Parsons reportedly told producers that be wouldn’t be returning to the show, so it was decided to bring the eternally top five-rated program (if not #1 overall) to a close. ABC: The network's biggest bet is on a one-hour dramedy, “A Million Little Things,” that involves how a group of friends react to the suicide of the person they considered to be the leader of their coterie, played by Ron Livingston. … Another drama, “The Rookie,” stars perennial ABC series star Nathan Fillion as a 40-year-old male who decides to join the LAPD in what seems to be a way of dealing with a mid-life crisis ... Comedies that look like winners: ABC offers two intriguing series, “Single Parents” and “The Kids Are Alright.” In the former, ex-“Saturday Night Live” cast member Taran Killam stars as an overly exuberant single dad in a suburban California elementary school PTA. A great supporting cast includes the always welcome Brad Garrett and “Gossip Girl” alum Leighton Meester. “The Kids Are Alright” is set in the 1970s, and stars Michael Cudlitz and Mary McCormack as Mike and Peggy Cleary, parents to eight boys. NBC: The network made headlines and crashed the Internet by picking up “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” after Fox decided to cancel the series. Never a ratings juggernaut, the show has a rabid fan base; expect it to debut mid-season … “I Feel Bad” is a comedy about suburban life where most of the lead actors (Sarayu Blue, Brian George, and Sarayu Blue) are of South Asian descent. Amy Poehler executive produced, and that appears to be the reason that it found its way
onto the NBC primetime schedule ... It’s not a TV season without a new hospital drama: “New Amsterdam” features Ryan Eggold as Dr. Max Goodwin, who takes over as a CEO of an aging New York medical facility that only cares Single Parents about providing the best care to all patients regardless of the economics. Fox: Another one off the scrap heap: Fox is reviving “Last Man Standing” starring Tim Allen, a year after ABC cancelled the series … For a network that attracts a younger demographic than the “big three,” Fox is offering a comedy about retirees in an assisted living facility that stars Martin Mull, David Alan Grier, Leslie Jordan, and Vicki Lawrence called “The Cool Kids.” The clips we saw certainly hit the funny bone.

Rookie second baseman Jeff McNeil has been a silver lining late in this cloudy New York Mets seaso; he reminds some pundits of former Met Daniel Murphy. McNeil put together a streak where he got a hit in eight consecutive at-bats.

The main concern is if McNeil's batting average will go south once pitchers get more familiar with him and invariably make adjustments (and if McNeil can avoid the injury bug, which bit him in the quad on August 26). Give the Mets’ triumvirate of general managers credit for signing Austin Jackson. The center fielder was a New York Yankees prospect a little more than a decade ago before he was dealt to The Detroit Tigers for Mickey Callaway Curtis Granderson. Jackson has bounced around MLB, but he has always been a capable outfield defender and is not an automatic out unlike others the Mets have tried, such as Matt den Dekker. The Mets would be wise to retain him for next season; management should have learned they can’t count on the frequently injured Juan Lagares or Yoenis Cespedes. The jury is out as to whether Dominic Smith will be
the first baseman of the future for the Mets, but he deserves credit for not getting down on himself. Two weeks ago, Smith had to play left field because manager Mickey Callaway had run out of position players in an extra inning game. Smith wound up colliding with shortstop Amed Rosario, who had called him off on a pop-up which as dropped, and as a result The San Francisco Giants scored the winning run in a 2-1 heartbreaker. Smith showed no signs of being the slightest bit down the following day – and blasted a mammoth home run in the next game. Despite the heroics, Smith soon was sent down to the minors once again. Callaway cites the availability of technological databases for the increase in defensive shifts: “We divide the field into 20 sectors for hitters. It’s funny how the majority of batted balls go into just three of them,” he said during one of his pregame press conferences. When I was growing up, the only time I heard about teams employing a shift was when lefty Giants slugger Willie McCovey was in the batter’s box. Did the Yankees catch that injury bug from their counterparts in Queens? Slugging outfielder Aaron Judge broke his wrist after Baltimore Orioles August 19 at AMF Wantagh Lanes, and Gary Paulsen, also of Massapequa, won his fourth club championship and $1,000 at the sport shot event on August 12 at AMF Babylon Lanes. A few weeks later, shortstop Didi Gregorius joined Judge on the disabled list after colliding with Toronto Blue Jays Kendrys Morales on a close play at first base. WWE wrestling stars Jeff Hardy, Mickie James, and Curt Hawkins made promotional appearances at Citi Field to catch batting practice and a Mets game two weeks ago. Hardy told me that he was a shortstop on his high school baseball team in North Carolina. He was surprised to learn that one of his wrestling heroes, the late Randy Savage, First Time, First Title: More congratulations are in order for lefty Adam Baritot (right), who pretty much did the impossible: In his first organized bowling league as an adult, Baritot emerged as the “sole survivor” in the recently completed Wednesday Survivor League at Herrill Lanes in New Hyde Park. Baritot won a five-bowler stepladder at the completion of play on August 29 to win the plaque and a $200 bonus prize for his efforts in the popular annual summer league. Serving Youth: The Long Island Youth Bowling Tour (LIYBT) is ready to roll again; the 26th season kickoff is September 16 with the adult/junior doubles tourney at Farmingale Lanes, and October 21 brings a tourney at Herrill Lanes. Refried Hambones: Fox Sports and The Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) recently announced the lead broadcasting team for the 2019 Go Bowling! PBA Tour, including the return of Rob Stone (left) as play-by-play announcer, along with analyst Randy Pedersen and reporter Kimberly Pressler. The trio will make its Fox debut on Sunday, December 23 with The PBA Clash on Fox. The announcement was made by John Entz, President of Production & Executive Producer, Fox Sports, and PBA CEO-Commissioner Tom Clark. Stone was PBA’s play-by-play announcer from 2008 until 2012. “Back in 2008, the PBA unexpectedly became a cherished part of my career,” said Stone. “The hope to be reunited with the world’s best bowlers has existed for years. His New Album Is ‘Different’ – & Dynamic
One of the area’s most noted and prolific recording artists – guitarist, pianist, and singer/songwriter Joe Piket – is back on the boards with Everything Is Different, a new album that was released on August 31 via iTunes, Amazon, SonicBids, and other online outlets. “As you might guess from the title, every song on the CD is of a different genre, from doo-wop to progressive rock, and blues to ballads,” said Piket at the time the album was completed. True to his word, the new effort features an eclectic collection of styles, including doo wop, Reggae, Americana, prog rock, and even blues. The Real Deal: In our last issue, “Demolition” featured the new EP by the young guitarist Ben Goldsmith, No Kidding, which was produced by the famed engineer Greg Wirth – but the up-and-coming artist is also a member of the trio Sons Of Sound, comprised of James Bandini, Ben Bustamante, and Goldsmith. This summer, the Nassau-based originals band took part in a short tour, and will soon work on an EP release of their own. If you hear this young trio, you'll hear a soulful, technically adept rock sound that surely belies their tender years. They've already performed at such top venues as K.J. Wayne Holmes – who performed a large outdoor show on July 24 as part of The Village of Great Neck Plaza Concert Series – died during the month of August at his area home. Holmes was best known in recent years for his tribute concerts to Ray Charles. David Emanuel of EES Music & Entertainment informed us of his passing: “He was a great talent and a great man.” Holmes' lavish Ray Charles shows, complete with female backup singers and large bands, worked constantly in the area in recent years, including such top venues as the recently closed B.B. King's Blues Club in New York City.
Theatre Three in Port Jefferson has announced that comedian Bob Nelson has found a new home ... at Theatre Three: Nelson will appear once per month on Theatre Three's second stage beginning Thursday, September 20. For those who have never seen this veteran funnyman: “Watching a Bob Nelson live performance is like watching several different types of comedians all rolled into one,” reported Theatre three, citing his famous characters such as the nerd Eppy Epperman, punchy boxer Jiffy Jeff, and chicken rancher Wilby Stuckinson. Nelson's football routine is a recognized comedy classic, and "Morning," his tale of a farmer and a duck, “is one of the finest works of one man showmanship to grace the modern stage,” according to Theatre Three. “If all that were not enough, Bob's ability to relay personal stories and observations about everyday life put him in the same league as the best of today's stand-up comics. VMA Daze: Having discussed the current state of MTV not too long ago, I felt compelled to watch this year’s Video Music Awards (VMAs), which once upon a time was one of the biggest industry events of the year ... before social media and other distractions entered the picture. Hearing that legacy Jennifer artists such as Jennifer Lopez Lopez and Madonna were participating, I girded my loins and took the plunge (and based on the ratings, I was clearly in the minority). Now, I know I'm older and not a true participant in the “what's happening now” groove, but I do instantly recognize star power when I see it; as current pop chart squatters paraded before me, I didn't see any stars. Through no real fault of their own, I saw glee club kids raised on “American Idol” belting out Saturday night date songs to make their doting parents proud. as a non entity, and so, too, as The era of real magnetic star ratings indicate, are the VMAs power seems to have passed, as themselves. It’s Iliza’s Time: Fresh off her highly rated, recently debuted Netflix comedy special “Elder Millennial,” the red-hot standup comedy star Iliza (previously known by her full name, Iliza Shlesinger) will headline for the first time on Thursday, September 20 at 8 pm at The Paramount in Huntington. The outspoken blonde star’s name has been on everyone’s lips since the debut of the Netflix special just a few weeks ago. She’s clearly now one of the current scene’s most popular comedians, and has a fan base that shows its loyalty by creating its own Iliza-inspired swag to wear to her shows. She recently completed hosting her late night limited-run talk show “Truth & Iliza” on Freeform Iliza (formerly ABC Family). The selfstyled talk show is a cross between social commentary, politics, pop culture and Iliza’s specific brand of feminism. In November 2017, she released her first book Girl Logic: The Genius And The Absurdity (Hachette Book Group), a subversively funny collection of essays and observations on a confident woman’s approach to friendship, singlehood, and relationships. Currently, she’s about to star in the Paramount Pictures film Instant Family, also starring Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne; the release date is November 16. Originally from Dallas, Iliza moved to Los Angeles after graduating from Emerson College. She is the only female and youngest comedian to hold the title of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing.” Her debut one-hour comedy special, “War Paint,” reached #1 on the iTunes charts, and was named one of its Top 10 Albums of 2013. Iliza’s follow-up, Freezing Hot, a Netflix original comedy special, sealed her title as one of the hottest touring acts in America, with Esquire listing her as one of the top working comedians today. Marking the band’s 20th consecutive year of touring, Trans-Siberian Orchestra (TSO) – which during its history has employed a wealth of Long Island-based musicians – has announced its “Winter Tour 2018,” which will stop locally on December 20 at Nassasu Coliseum. Trans-Siberian TSO’s annual Orchestra November/December multi-sensory extravaganza, which sells out venues year after year, has cemented the group’s status as an American holiday tradition. This year’s 20th anniversary tour, a presentation of TSO’s “The Ghosts of Christmas Eve” featuring founder/composer/ lyricist Paul O’Neill’s story of a runaway who finds her way into a mysterious abandoned theater, is set to begin on November 14 and will visit 65 cities across North America for more than 100 performances before concluding on December 30.
