Foo Fighters • Madison Square Garden New York City

It’s said that rock is on a decline, yet Dave Grohl and his mighty Foo Fighters certiainly don’t buy that bromide – in fact, they object to the very idea, and take on the challenge in full force. Walking onto “The Garden” like they owned the joint, they arrived stocked and loaded with a nearly 30 song, two and a-half hour set featuring every tune that fans would likely want to hear from the band’s albums. Throwing in some obscure classics and special surprises (such as honoring Billy Joel on the eve of the 100th show of the “Piano Man's” MSG residency), they presented an energy level that most other alternative/rock acts from 1994 can barely muster these days. Pumping out “Everlong,” “Monkey Wrench,” “Hero,” and “Walk” to near perfection, Foo Fighters proved why it remains one of the biggest rock bands in the world.

The summer is slowly coming to a close – so it's time to take a look back at the 2018 festival season, and what's still left to come: Until this year, I hadn’t been able to experience the magic that is

With Richard Joseph Branciforte Electric Forest, but for the 2018 event, I rounded up my squad and took the 22-hour drive to Rothbury, Michigan. When entering the campground, the sheer scale of it all is Rezz overwhelming: Before you even get inside, there is an array of vendors selling awesome clothing, accessories, food, and anything else you could think of. This was an easy place to meet people, go to activities at The Brainery (the forest version of a short educational session with some artist or group), or relax in a hammock. As for the festival itself, nothing but positive energy and people surrounded us as we made our way from our campsite to the entrance. It was easy to tell that even the people working at the entrance were as excited as the attendees to be there. It was a truly beautiful place – not only were there six stages for music (two were inside the actual forest), but there were countless other activities – breathtaking art installations, drag shows, tree Dinosours Roam The Earth – Again: Lost Lands

houses, special areas to recharge and reflect, secret scavenger hunts, surprises around every corner, the list goes on – to keep folks occupied in the afternoon. There was an area called The Hangar that resembled a 1940s aircraft hangar that included a (free!) barber shop, tattoo parlor, massage lounge, and game room. The Hangar was a great place to relax and get whatever you need, and right near it was the Sherwood Court stage, with a full craft beer tent ready to serve. When night arrived, the forest lit up with a large array of lights, lasers, and creatures; it was easy to appreciate the production values

and the thought and effort that went into every little detail. It was hard to even see half of everything in the four days I was there, but I did my best. When not exploring the new realm I had entered, I spent time doing the other activity I was there for: the music! Electric Forest did an amazing job bringing together artists from every imaginable corner of EDM to give festival goers a diverse and immersive experience. I got to see everything from funk, jam bands, dubstep, bass, house, live performances, and much more. Some of the highlights: Rezz playing

at Sherwood after a giant storm threatened to cancel the last day of music; Griz with his side project, The Shiz; Boombox Cartel at Tripolee, followed by Jauz and G Jones; and The Russ Liquid Test at Jubilee. I met some incredible people, and it was an experience I won’t soon forget. I’m already getting excited for Electric Forest 2019, and I hope you’ll be there with me! After Electric Forest ended, I was a bit sad, but knew there were other great festivals coming up – the next is Lost Lands at Legend Valley in Ohio. Last year, Excision debuted Lost Lands as the one-stop shop for all things dubstep and bass music, and it was just that. I had a hard time figuring out where to go and what to do, as I wanted to see every artist – and it seems the same this year. The lineup features heavy hitters such as Flux Pavilion, Jauz, Rezz, Nghtmre, Rusko, Snails, Doctor P, Dubloadz, Midnight T – and the man himself, Excision, with multiple sets throughout the weekend. This year, there are two giant main stages, as well as more bass – and more dinosaurs! Camping space has been extended, and anyone with a festival wristband can enter the campsite and party all night long. This is not one to be missed; Lost Lands takes place September 13 through 16 this year outside Columbus, Ohio. Perhaps I’ll see some of you at Lost Lands this year. Hit me up at richiegtechno@gmail.com with any thoughts or questions – and remember, keep raging, my friends!

Back To League, Back To Bowling: It's that time again – in just a few scant days, the 2018/2019 bowling season will begin at bowling centers all over the area. If you're not a league bowler, now is the time to get involved; call your local bowling

Bowling

It’s Time To Join A League: Your 2018/2019 Season Guide center to learn what leagues you can be part of. There are leagues for children, seniors, new bowlers, high or low average bowlers, you name it. Conversely, if you haven't bowled in a while – or have never picked up a ball – now is the time to head for the lanes for some weekend or late night fun. There's no question about it: Bowling is back in a big way, once again taking the lead as the nation's top participatory sport. If you're a league bowler, here are some smart things to do to prepare for this season. New Ball Time: Virtually every major bowling ball manufacturer has new items available during August in preparation for the new season; pictured here is Track's new Precision, a versatile rock that should suit the needs of bowlers of all styles. That's not all, obviously – Storm, Roto Grip, Motiv, Ebonite, Hammer (psst: there are new Black Widow models), Brunswick, 900 Global, and all the popular brands have new balls available just in time for you

to tweak your game. Join The USBC: Even veteran league bowlers aren't aware of it: Did you know your USBC card can be used to get discounts with a variety of services and companies? Did you know that the USBC guarantees your prize money in all sanctioned leagues? Or that the USBC can be used to settle rules disputes or league controversies? For the scant few dollars it costs, USBC membership is a no-brainer – and remember, if you want your scores to actually count, it's the only way to go. Get In The Habit: Today's reactive resin bowling balls should be cleaned after use, and we mean every time. Regular cleaning can increase the life span of your equipment like nothing else. Get Some Help: Most bowling centers have coaches on site (or in the pro shops) that can help you improve your game, and be at your best for league or tournament play. Take advantage! Roll In Tournaments: Virtually every weekend during bowling season, there is a tournament going on somewhere. Locally, popular clubs include The Long Island Generations Bowling Tour (LIGBT), Bob Steppe's Great American Seniors, the amazing Freeport-based Underground Bowling Association (UBA), and a host of upstart clubs and charity events. Simply Google any of these names to get started; you'll have a blast and perhaps pick up some cash if your skills are up to the challenge.

Have Fun!: We can't think of anything better than the camaraderie and excitement of league bowling – and you get to do it every week. Now is the time to act, or continue to watch from afar while the rest of us have a blast. It's all up to you. USBC Open Area Achievers: A large number of bowlers from Long Island and Queens participated in the USBC Open Championships in Syracuse this year; here's a look at area bowlers who made the leaderboards in this national tournament that attracted thousands of bowlers from across the United States: 2018 Regular Division (Doubles): Cristina Reale of Merrick and Rob Gotterbarn of Garden City South placed 17th in this division. 2018 Standard Teams: Sheridan Crew #3 of North Bellmore – Diana Shorthouse of Westbury, Rick Gioia of Wantagh, and Tyler Cacioppo and Thomas Cacioppo Jr. of Douglaston – tied for 104th place; a team from Excelsior Awards in West Babylon finished tied for 134th place. 2018 Classified Division All-Events: Tyler Cacioppo of Douglaston finished tied for 31st place. 2018 Standard Division All-Events: Jeff Fennell of Selden finished in 28th place. Ohio’s Best: Passport Brew Tour

Passport To Fine Suds: Feel like a trip to a major beer event? Lunar Cow Publishing and Visit Canton in Ohio have announced the "Passport Brew Tour." This is the official passport program that will feature 20 regional locations in Stark, Tuscarawas, Wayne, and Holmes Counties. The Passport Brew Tour is being promoted in collaboration with four regional Convention and Visitors Bureaus. More than 10,000 craft beer enthusiasts are estimated to participate in the fall brew tour. Beer enthusiasts will visit each location included in the tour and enjoy the craft beers, food and music that each venue has to offer. They can pick up their official Brew Tour Passport at any participating location including the Convention and Visitors Bureaus within each county. Once a qualifying purchase is made, the beer enthusiast will receive a stamp in their official passport. After all 20 stamps are collected, participants will turn in their completed passport at the host brewery to redeem their official Brew Tour t-shirt. The Passport Brew Tour will utilize Lunar Cow's proprietary mobile app, iMap 3.0, to educate the participants on the area's points of interest and other nearby attractions. They can access the mobile interactive technology from the Passport Brew Tour's web site, passportbrewtour.com. Visit Canton's VP of Marketing and Communications Tonja Marshall stated, "With the increasing interest in craft beers and the addition of several new breweries in the county, we felt that visitors coming to the area would appreciate an organized brew tour so they can enjoy all of the beers Stark County has to offer." Lunar Cow President Benjamin Harris added, "The craft beer industry is booming and beer enthusiasts have become more organized and social in their consumption of craft beer. The Passport Brew Tour not only promotes local breweries but also brings the participants together and provides information on the area." The Passport Brew Tour kicks off September 1 and must be completed by December 3. Enjoy Stone See the website Ripper At passportbrewtour.com, Joe’s Garage or visit their Facebook page. Long Ireland Beer Co. Winner In Local Brewery Battle At LI Craft Classic

Despite a threatening weather forecast, the rain held off for the return of The Long Island Craft Clasic in at Heckscher State Park. A record number of attendees took part on Saturday, August 11 to try craft beers, wines, ciders, and barbeque food, and to vote in the second annual Long Island Brew’d competition. Earlier this summer, several Long Island breweries signed up for a brewing competition knowing there would be a mystery ingredient with which they had to brew. After a fan-curated online vote, in June the ingredient was revealed: Pineapple. Breweries then had more than eight weeks to brew any beer style they preferred, as long as it incorporated pineapple. The 2018 competitors included breweries from across Long Island and included many different styles, from Pale Ales to Sours. Competing this year: 1940's Brewing Co., Brickhouse Brewery, Barnshed Brewing, Blue Point Brewing Co., Garvies Point Brewery Inc., Greenport Harbor Brewing Co., Lithology Brewing Co., Long Ireland Beer Co., Spider Bite Beer Co., Six Harbors Brewing Co., and The Brewers Collective Beer Co. The winner: Moku Loa IPA, brewed by Long Ireland Beer Co. “For our Moku Loa Pineapple IPA, we used a base beer of our Mosiac IPA and infused it with a pineapple extract. We sampled various versions until we found the right balance of pineapple flavor to really allow it to shine,” said Greg Martin, co-owner of Long Ireland Beer Co., based in Riverhead. Next year’s Long Island Craft Classic and the third annual Brew’d competition will be Saturday, August 10, 2019. For more information, visit LICraftClassic.com.

Ben Goldsmith No Kidding (EP) Independent Who: Here's someone to keep an eye on: Ben Goldsmith – just 12 years old at the time of the release of this new EP a couple of months back – plays guitar like artists 20 years his senior. After wowing audiences with his fretboard skills in live settings, Goldsmith recorded this EP of original songs. It's easy to hear some influences in his playing; we hear a little Joe Satriani there, a little Joe Bonamassa there. What is undeniable is Goldsmith's immense talent as a guitarist; if you listen, you'll never believe someone this young could be so accomplished. Obviously, this is a fresh

The Artist & His Sound: From his bio: “Ben is a 12-year-old recording artists that draws influence from a vast array of genres. From the blues, classic rock, fusion, and beyond, Ben writes his life experience through the notes of his instruments. Heavily influenced by rhythmic melodic phrasing, Ben’s songs speak to diverse listeners. He played all instruments on the album so that his vision was achieved firsthand. The album title 'No Kidding' references the frustration of not being taken seriously as an artist at a young age, and is a nod to his first single released last year at the age of 11 (“More Than Me”), where the lyrics speak about the same idea.” To learn more about Ben Goldsmith, visit him on Instagram @Benrocks1117, or write to Benrocks1117@gmail.com. Jazz & Blues

Blues You Can Use: In the blues world, the hot new artists are coming fast and furious: It's not often that an artist – particularly a singer – trades country for blues, but that's exactly what has happened: Canadian star Crystal Shawanda’s new CD, Crystal VooDoo Woman, will debut on Shawanda September 21 on True North Records; it's already out on iTunes, Labelstore, and Spotify. It has taken Shawanda until studio album number five — the gritty VooDoo Woman — to pinpoint her essence as a blues singer, even though her previous albums would mostly be filed under country, and she has been performing since her teens. With her country debut album producing a Top 20 radio hit, Top 20 Billboard Country Albums chart status — plus more than 50,000 copies sold in the U.S. — Shawanda couldn’t help but feel out of place within the genre. “The whole time I was singing Patsy Cline on stage, I was singing Etta James at home,” Shawanda admitted. The new album features interpretations of Big Mama Thornton’s “Hound Dog” and “Ball and Chain,” Koko Taylor’s “Voodoo Woman,” Dorothy Moore’s “Misty Blue,” and Etta James’ “I’d Rather Go Blind,” plus originals and more … Suddenly, blues veteran Al Basile has become quite prolific, issuing an album each of the past two years; his new, Duke Robillardproduced CD, Me & The Originator Al (now available), features stars includBasile ing Mark Texeira (drums), Brad Hallen (bass), Bruce Bears (keyboards), Doug James (tenor and baritone sax), and Jeff “Doc” Chanonhouse (trumpet). “For the 20th anniversary of my Sweetspot label, I wanted to do something different,” Basile says about the new project. “Inspired by the running narrative between the songs on Louis Armstrong: My Musical Biography, I decided to tell a story about an imaginary musician who found lyrics, set music to them, but never admitted he didn’t write the words after he got famous. It’s a story about blues songs – how they came to be, and who can claim them as theirs, that speaks to the history of the music as we’ve inherited it. The story is told by the narration and the songs working together.” … Canadian star Ray Bonneville (he's become an area favorite after performing locally during the past several years) will release his new album, At King Electric, on Ray September 7 via Stonefly Records. Bonneville Featuring 11 original songs, At King Electric was recorded in Austin, Texas and produced by Bonneville and Justin Douglas. In addition to Bonneville (guitars, vocals and harmonica), the band for the recording sessions included Richie Lawrence (electric piano and accordion), and Andre Bohren (drums, percussion, and piano). Based in Austin for the past 10 years, Bonneville strips his bluesy Americana down to its essentials on this new effort.

Rhythm Tracking With Jimi LaLumia

There Was No Other: It has become overwhelmingly depressing to chronicle the departures of so many key and cult figures from the pop music/culture universe. The past few years have been especially brutal, and a grim reminder that life is short. So it is that after a years-long battle with cancer, Aretha Franklin has left this mortal vale. She was a universe mover as she brought gospel-tinged R&B to new heights for the pop music audience. Generations have grown up with "R-E-S-P-EC-T," but having been there transistor radio in hand in the late 1960s, I can tell you: When that single 45 RPM record was new, when people heard it for the first time their hair stood straight up, mine included. The voice and the delivery was not something usually heard on Top 40 radio, if ever, before that iconic anthem took hold of the country, zooming to the #1 position on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. Listening to the stunning series of singles released by Atlantic Records alone (which I'm doing at this very moment via Spotify) is breathtaking, as they sound as fresh and vital as they did 30 and 40 years ago when they were the latest thing: "Think," "Spirit In The Dark," "Chain Of Fools," and so many others are timeless. After leaving the Atlantic label and signing to Clive Davis' Arista imprint, the hits just kept on keeping on. Spending some serious time listening to Franklin's collective works will be well worth the time and effort; in her final days,

she dominated the news cycles, with the world acknowledging the tremendous contributions she made to recorded music. My favorite moment is a decade or two ago when she stepped in for an ailing Luciano Pavarotti at the Grammy Awards and performed the opera piece "Nessun Dorma" and stunned the world once again with her typical ease and grace. It is true; a giant is gone. Rest in peace, Lady Soul. Goodbye, Elda: In other sad news, an original member of The Stilettos, Elda Gentile, died in New York City recently. Elda, alongside a lineup that included,

Aretha Franklin

among others, Warhol drag star Holly Woodlawn and an early incarnation of Blondie star Debbie Harry, was in on the ground floor of The Mercer Arts Center/Max's Kansas City glam/glitter scene that eventually transmuted into the earliest arrival of punk rock, Manhattan style, alongside The New York Dolls and Wayne/ Jayne County. Elda had remained active right up to her passing, and was working on a book detailing those historic years; if the book was completed before she passed, or how far along the work had gotten, is yet to be disclosed. I had the pleasure of working with her several times at Max's reunion shows downtown. She will be missed.

Classic Rock

Photos provided by associated record and film companies and distributors; Commentary by Bob Smith

Legends & Hangers-On: Here’s news from opposite ends of the classic rock spectrum: John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s film Imagine hits exclusive theater screens in September; the film includes previously unreleased cinema-exclusive bonus material, restored footage, remixes, and a remastered Dolby Atmos soundtrack mix. Imagine was produced and directed by John and Yoko, who, with numerous guest stars including George Harrison, Fred Astaire, Andy Warhol, Dick Cavett, Jack Palance, and Jonas Mekas, create a world of imagination as rich and moving as the music that accompanies it. The groundbreaking music film features a different visual treatment for every song, and follows John and Yoko during the recording sessions for Imagine in both the UK and New York as they coproduced the record with Phil Spector. It is accompanied by 15 minutes of neverbefore-seen extras including studio footage of John and his band (including George Harrison, Nicky Hopkins from The Rolling Stones, Alan White from Yes, and Klaus Voormann) performing "How Do You Sleep?" and "Oh My Love" in a specially created Dolby Atmos surround sound "raw studio" mix that puts viewers in the center of the recording studio while the band plays live. “The people who all worked on Imagine were 'Peace People,' and it was so enlightening and exciting all the The 2018 Version Of way through to The Guess Who be one of them,” said Ono. “Remember, each one of us has the power to change the world.” For details of cinemas participating in this special event screening, visit imaginefilmtickets.com … Sometimes, things aren't really as they seem, so be careful: There's a new album by something called The Guess Who, The Future IS What It Used To Be, which is being issued on September 14 – but don't expect to hear Burton Cummings or Randy Bachman (or even Don McDougal or Bill Wallace) as part of the group. A glance at the current lineup for this endlessly reconstituted band reveals only drummer Garry Peterson from the band’s heyday, along with far younger replacements including bassist Rudy Sarzo, best known for a stint in Quiet Riot. Watching this band, with members at least 30 years too young to have had anything to do with songs such as “American Woman” and “No Time” (and playing them as if they are their own hits) is one of the strangest things on the road these days. Warning: This group sounds nothing like the classic band; a new single, “Playin' On The Radio,” has already been issued; view it on YouTube to see and hear what we mean.

BITS & PIECES Kelsea Ballerini

Kelsea Ballerini:
