Flyer, treasurer of The Roslyn High School Robotics Club, was a founding member of this new club, which placed second at The VEX Robotics Competition. “I absolutely love robotics and my experience being part of the robotics team at Roslyn High School,” said Flyer. When I realized that the kids at WORC didn’t have the types of opportunities available to them that the kids in Roslyn do, I wanted to share my passion and knowledge with them.”

Trace Adkins • NYCB Theate At Westbury Photos and text by Wayne Herrschaft, headlampdigital.com

The harsh winter weather in March kept country superstar Trace Adkins from performing at The NYCB Theatre at Westbury, but his fans still showed in droves at the reschedled date on June 20; he raised his hat and thanked his patient fans for coming out. The 17-song set featured tunes from his 30-plus year career, with brief stories explaining some of the song’s origins. “Soldier” was dedicated to our armed services and all the veterans that allow us the freedoms that we sometimes take for granted. Prior to performing “Just Fishing,” Adkins explained how thankful he was to be able to spend time fishing with his two daughters a few days earlier on Father's Day. The crowd was fairly subdued, with some singing along with their favorite songs – until the encore “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk,” which saw many fans dancing in the aisles. – Photos and text by Wayne Herrschaft

Mission: Impossible – Fallout

Starring Tom Cruise, Henry Cavill, Ving Rhames, Vanessa Kirby, Alec Baldwin, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Sean Harris, Angela Bassett Directed and written by Christopher McQuarrie Paramount Loyal readers know that we constantly bemoan the lack of ingenuity (and originality) in Hollywood these days, as sequels begat sequel after sequel – if a film is a hit, then lather, rinse, and repeat. Of course, upon hearing that there's yet another Tom Cruise-led Mission: Impossible film, our first response was “What, again?” – and to think: Most of today's youth have never even heard of the original TV series, featuring a cast that featured such notables as Peter Graves, Leonard Nimoy, Martin Landau, Barbara Bain, Leslie Ann Warren, Peter Lupus, Greg Morris, and other stars as they tackled a new, seemingly “impossible mission” week after week. We are happy to report that our curmudgeonly ways are dead wrong in this case. Mission: Impossible – Fallout is so good that it has had more than once critic question whether this film series is actually better than the James Bond series. Sure, there's yet another all-star cast here – but the real hero is

writer and director Christopher McQuarrie, who returns after directing 2015's Rogue Nation edition of this franchise. Simply put, McQuarrie has the touch; his deft hand at conjuring up exciting and, even more important, realistic action scenes may be the finest in big budget cinema these days. Rogue Nation was previously the best movie of the MI series, but wonder of wonders, this new meller tops it. This really is a tightly packed thrill ride of the highest order. If you're into action, this one has it all, from a huge brawl in a restroom to utterly fearless Cruise (reportedly, without a stunt man, but who knows) performing a HALO jump out of a

moving airplane, to an incredible motorcycle chase scene on the streets of Paris that harkens back to (and almost equals) other classic film care chases (our alltime favorite remains The French Connection with Gene Hackman). It's certainly a pleasure to watch a film – brought to us by an expert filmmaker – that pulls out all the stops to entertain its audience, and this one does just that. In all, it’s one thrill after another.

The 2018 New York Mets season is over where the pennant race is concerned – but there are players and news threads that are still worth watching: Last year, outfielder Michael Conforto was an All-Star, and the

SportsBeat With Lloyd Carroll

assumption was that he would be that kind of player for years to come. About a month following the 2017 All-Star Game, Conforto injured his shoulders swinging at a pitch and missed the rest of the season. Recuperating from his surgery cost him much of a chance to work on baseball activities during the off-season, which may have affected Conforto’s bad start this season, from which he has been slow to recover. Mets executives will breath a sigh of relief if he can revert to his 2017 form in the final weeks of this season. Jay Bruce was the Mets’ biggest free agent signing last winter, and the move made a lot of sense. He had proven that he could perform for the Mets in his previous stint before being dealt to The Cleveland Indians at last year’s trade deadline, and he played well for the Indians in their drive to the post-season. Unfortunately, Bruce has been plagued this season by an injured

hip as well as plantar fasciitis, which likely affected his ability to hit the ball. Hopefully, Bruce will feel better (and play better) as this season winds down – if he eventually is reinstated from the disabled list, of course. Former Mets reliever Jenrry Mejia, banned by Major League Baseball in 2014 after testing positive three different times for performance enhancement drugs, has been quietly reinstated by MLB officials, effective in 2019. Many have forgotten that Mejia was the Mets closer at one time, and Jeurys Familia was actually his setup man. Most Mets fans were understandably livid after the suspension, and demanded that the team cut ties with Mejia. Given the abysmal current state of the Mets bullpen, it might behoove Michael them to be forgiving. I Conforto have always felt that Mejia, 25 when he failed his last drug test, was more naive than he was a cheat. He probably believed the buscones in his life (baseball scouts from the Dominican Republic who latch onto boys at the Little League level and become family like advisors to them), who probably told Mejia that some concoction they had for him would make him big and strong like Popeye eating his

Bryce Harper spinach, and he went along. One prominent baseball agent concurred with my assessment that Mejia was more ignorant than he was malevolent. I never realized how much of a celebrity that longtime Mets VP of media relations, the inimitable Jay Horwitz, is to Mets fans until I read Howie Kussoy’s lengthy profile of him in The New York Post last month. Horwitz has been with the Mets for 38 years, which makes him, by far, the dean of baseball communications executives. The All-Star Game doesn’t resound with

Jay ever before, judging by the amount Horwitz of coverage that its summer rookie

fans as it once did, given interleague play and the fact that players change teams more often than they used to because of free agency. Fox Sports and The Major League Baseball Players Association realize this, and that's why they allowed Mike Trout and Bryce Harper to wear microphones and shmooze with announcer Joe Buck while they were in the outfield. Both were witty, and it made for good television – as did the record-setting 10 home runs that were hit during the 10-inning game. The NBA is getting more attention than

B

league in Las Vegas has received. Nearly every newspaper in the country whose city has an NBA franchise sent reporters to it. The good news for talent-starved New York Knicks fans is that their team’s top two draft choices – guard Kevin Knox and center Mitchell Robinson – played well in Vegas. That may not mean much come October, but the team’s long-suffering fans will accept any crumbs of good news that they can get right now. The Brooklyn Nets decided to trade oft-injured point guard Jeremy Lin to The Atlanta Hawks in a three-way salary dump deal that also involved The Denver Nuggets – who received guard Isaiah Whitehead from the Nets, who had done little in his two years with his hometown Brooklyn team. The Nets received one-time NBA All-Star forward Kenneth Faried from the Nuggets. The Nets’ new slogan for the upcoming season is “We Go Hard!” I kid you not. One of the best bargains in sports, The U.S. Open Qualifiers, are August 21 through 24 at The Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows; admission is free. Some of the best tennis players in the world will compete for wildcard slots. There is a good chance that you’ll see some familiar

names; Merrick’s Noah Rubin may be among the competitors. The PGA Tour makes its late August stop in next week as when The Northern Trust is at The Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, New Jersey. The event is the first leg of The FedEx Cup, which is The PGA Tour’s playoffs. The top-ranked 125 golfers in the world will be invited, so it’s questionable if big draw Tiger Woods will be appearing.

BILLY J. KRAMER A Legend (& Rock Royalty) At My Father’s Place

myfathersplace.com and (516) 413-3535. Kramer has been enjoying a career resurgence during the past few years; his autobiography, Do You Want To Know A Secret?, has been a notable book and best seller in the music category, and his 2015 album, I Won The Fight – an album with strong Long Island roots (it was co-produced by the veteran area guitarist Don Celenza) – earned airplay all over the globe. It's hard to deny the still-strong talents of one of the most beloved “British Invasion” stars. Kramer grew up in Bootle, a suburb of Liverpool. His performance at local rock clubs brought him to the attention of a young John Lennon, and Kramer was signed by the legendary manager Brian Epstein. In 1963, Kramer was the first artist to score a #1

record with a Lennon-McCartney song, “Do You Want To Know A Secret,” which was actually written for Kramer by the legendary songwriting duo – and recorded with George Martin at Abbey Road Studios even before The Beatles recorded it themselves. Kramer toured extensively throughout the UK as The Beatles' opening act. It was all just the beginning: The LennonMcCartney compositions “Bad To Me, “I'll Keep You Satisfied,” “From A Window,” and “I Call Your Name” all became international hits for Kramer. Later, a song by Mort Shuman and John Leslie McFarland, “Little Children,” became one of the biggest smashes of

Kramer's career. The I Won The Fight album, upon its release, celebrated Kramer's 50th year in the music business – but he shows no signs of slowing down; his international momentum has lasted throughout the decades, and he continues to record and perform at top venues around the globe. Beautiful Bagels: Sometimes, a real treat is right around the corner: Long Island Bagel Café – already famous for its nine previous locations – is really rocking Mineola at its still-bunted location at 175 East Jericho Turnpike; a recent stop on an early Saturday

Long Island Bagel Café morning showed a line of hungry breakfast seekers that stretched almost out the door for the Café's amazing line of fresh bagels, as well as sandwiches and other breakfast choices. Our take: This was easily one of the best bagels we've ever enjoyed, and we ordered a simple plain one; it was big, robust, and toasted expertly. Trust us: The bagels are so hearty that just one is more than enough. Don't miss this busy but well-run location, which features a friendly, expert staff and fine service; call them at (516) 427-5454. A Meatless 'Impossibility': It’s a burger? It’s not a burger? Either way, it’s one we want to try: For the 2018 summer concert season, Live Nation has introduced The Impossible Burger to 37 owned and operated amphitheaters in the U.S., including at multiple New York metropolitan amphitheaters such as Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater and Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk, marking this as the first time the plant-based burger has been offered in a concert space. As part of an ongoing commitment to enhance the fan experience at Live Nation venues, “this partnership is an important first step toward curating a more climateThe friendly menu Impossible while providing Burger fans with options that fit a variety diet and lifestyles,” according to a press release. The Impossible Burger, which launched on July 26 at Chef David Chang’s restaurant, Momofuku Nishi, in New York City, tastes, smells, and cooks like meat from a cow, but is made entirely of plants. The Impossible Burger is produced without hormones, antibiotics, cholesterol, or artificial flavors, and uses about 75 percent less water, generates about 87 percent fewer greenhouse gases, and requires around 95 percent less land than conventional ground beef from cows. 10 • Good Times Magazine - August 14 - 27, 2018

The Mod Squad The Lounge At The Space At Westbury August 17 (516) 632-5350 This relatively new area act presents a tribute to a great decade of pop music – think of when the TV show of the same name was new, and you've got your time frame right. If it's “swingin' '60s,” they play it: The early “Merseybeat” of The Beatles and The Animals, the surf sound of The Beach Boys, folk rock, harmony-filled singer/songwriter hits, Hendrix, The Stones – you name it. Open Jam With Lisa Miller The Village Green Bar & Grill, Whitestone Tuesdays at 10 pm (718) 747-7797 You know it's a good jam when it attracts a whole mess of musicians – and that what usually happens each week and this lively and friendly get-together. Anything But Surf The Turning Point, Farmingdale August 26 • (516) 694-1000 Have a Sunday afternoon rave as this trio of swingin' Mineolabased musicians will once again fill the air at this new hotspot with a bevy of beachy, rockin' tunes. If you're a fan of the classic instrumental guitar bands such as The Ventures, get ready for a whole lot of surf music and just as much fun. They've been described as “the surf revival kings of New York,” and we can't argue with that summation on the matter. Good Times Magazine - August 14 - 27, 2018 • 15

STUDIO NEWS Mick James & Jaloney

Sun, Sun, Sun, Here It Comes: Beneath The Sun Rehearsal & Recording Studios in Hicksville just keeps on cranking out the sounds by area artists: Barry Rock has followed up recording his latest efforts at BTS by issuing a new video for “Lying Naked In My Bed,” the song for which was produced by Mick James; check it out at YouTube. James, a producer and engineer who is also a recording artist in his own right, was recently interviewed the music magazine called, appropriately enough, Magazine. In during June was Jaloney of San Antonio, Texas, who laid down tracks with James. More on Beneath The Sun: (631) 882-1327, or find the studio on Facebook.

PMA Is AOK: We recently received a copy of William Halliday's new song “Out Of The Sea,” which was recorded at PMA Studios in Medford; the new tracks (the second is an instrumental version) were produced, mixed, and mastered by area star Paul Andrejack. Additional recording and engineering were done in Japan by Yuki Akimoto. A host of familiar area musicians have used PMA in the past, including Jim Moran, Archdeacon, Andrejack, J.D. A 'Sound' Investment: The Sound Cellar in Huntington must be doing something very right: Even a cursory glance at their ratings at such online portals as Yelp and Facebook shows that musicians are thrilled with their services. Sound Cellar offers three very big rehearsal rooms for rent, featuring a host of great instruments and equipment (a jazz club with a baby grand piano is coming soon), recording services, and more. Private music lessons are another feature of this all-services company that are becoming particlarly popular. Artist news: The hot Big Happy Band's new album is in the mastering phase at Sound Cellar, and should be available any day now. Learn more at soundcellarli.com, or call (631) 923-1379.

LONG ISLAND SOUNDS

Gene Casey & The Lone Sharks

In a small gazebo where the combo was forced to peer through its front opening, Genge Casey and his Lone Sharks proved they knew how to entertain no matter the venue as they rocked locals on a murky Saturday evening on July 21. Playing everything from originals from their stellar new album, Guitar In The Rain, to classic country rockers such as Johnny Cash’s “Get Rhythm” and Chuck Berry standards, Casey’s warm demeanor and astounding guitar skills got more than a few fans out of their lawn chairs and up and dancing. Indeed, Casey’s deft mix of Americana, country, blues, and rock make him a major emerging artist as well as a jewel in the Long Island music scene – he’s the real deal in an endless sea of mimics.

LI’s Maureen Griffin Captures Ms. New York Senior America Crown

Maureen Griffin – known as “Biker Girl” thanks to her string of motorcycle-themed albums – earned the titles of Ms. New York Senior America 2018 and Ms. Congeniality Senior America at the annual pageant on July 29 at The Madison Theatre at Molloy College in Rockville Centre. Griffin performed a song from her debut album, Biker Girl, while an accompanying video showed pictures of her riding her motorcycle around the country; Griffin ranks as the first contestant in the pageant’s history to ride on two wheels. During her upcoming one-year reign, Griffin will appear at venues around New York State, including The Over 50 Fair at The Huntington Hilton on September 30. The singer/songwriter will perform songs from her upcoming album, Bikers Anonymous (When You’re Addicted To Two Wheels), at the official album release party on September 8 at Sunset Grill in Seaford. Her music and videos can be found on her official website, BikerMo.com.

Mad For Madigan: One of the most unique standups on the road was superb on a Saturday as Kathleen Madigan slayed 'em during her July 21 show at the lovely, just-right-for-comedy Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center. The longtime star, who recently had completed a tour of Canada with longtime friend Lewis Black, was her usual wry, acerbic self, riffing on her eternal battles with her family, the government, her love of alcohol, and other foibles – yet, she remains one of Kathleen the most lovable Madigan stars on tour, thanks to her self-effacing style and a real warmth that somehow bubbles up between all the insults and world-weary observations. If you've never caught Madigan rocking a mic, she's unlike anyone else out there: She's unapologetically honest and takes no prisoners, yet she'll make you love her for it. Keith Alberstadt Even that wasn't all: The surprise opener, Nashville's Keith Alberstadt, earned just short of a standing ovation with a short set that revealed both a dry sense of humor and comical facial expressions that are worth the price of admission all by themselves. George – Bob Smith Lopez More On Long Island Shores: Coming up: Much more comedy at Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center with the British superstar Eddie Izzard (September 8); one of Jerry Seinfeld's favorites, Tom Papa, on September 22; and the Long Island return of Howie Mandel (“Deal Or No Deal”) on November 10. Get tickets at paramountny.com and (631) 673-7300 … The NYCB Theatre At Westbury keeps the mirth flowing with “Seinfeld's” George Costanza, Jason Alexander, in a show that's likely to show his Broadway chops, on September 27; and the legendary George Lopez on October 5. Rhythm Tracking With Jimi LaLumia

More Supremes: Someone who well knows my Motown and Supremes obsessions turned me on to the cable channel Reelz, which apparently runs scandals and tabloid rumor shows around the clock. Sure enough, there it was: "Autopsy: The Last Hours Of Florence Ballard." Florence was the original “third member” of The Supremes, the one who was given the boot for rocking the boat – a story which made its way into Deamgirls, Florence Ballard a thinly veiled version of The Supremes saga that was a smash hit on Broadway and as a feature film. Ballard's smoking and drinking were blamed for her death, unlike all the conspiracy theories of Berry Gordy and Diana Ross plotting “Flo's” downfall. In reality, they were too busy plotting Ross' worldwide rise and had no reason to harm “Flo”; once she stopped playing for the team – Motown – Gordy simply wanted her off the team.

Reelz also ran another hourlong program, "Breaking The Band: The Supremes," which dealt with the group's disruption when Ross was given full name billing (the group eventually became known as Diana Ross & The Supremes); this show leaned a bit heavier on the

removal of Ballard from the group. I'm just fascinated that there is still this level of interest that would allow these sort of programs to get green lighted, production wise, as there is obviously an audience for this subject matter. When “20/20” did a sort of “Final Hours Of Michael Jackson," that was certianly no surprise – but Florence Ballard? This was a shocker, indeed. The franchise of The Supremes is alive and well. Just as with the expanded

Beatles, David Bowie, and Rolling Stones releases that never seem to end, neither does the expanded series of original Supremes albums, released in chronological order. Last year, the expanded 1966 Supremes A Go Go became a successful seller, and now Supremes Sing Holland/Dozier/Holland is doing the same. For those who don't know, H/D/H was the three-man team that wrote all those brilliant #1 hits for Motown in the 1960s before their financial falling out with, you guessed it, Motown president Berry Gordy. The spat saw the songwriters exit the company and write hits for other labels in the 1970s. While all these reissues are happening, solo Diana Ross, at press time, sat at #1 on Billboard's Dance Club Hits Chart with a 2018 remix of "Upside Down/I'm Coming Out," which will be included on the next Now! Dance CD series release. Ross appears alongside the biggest pop stars of the moment. It makes a '60s Motown fan proud!

Gaelynn Lea

Gaelynn Lea: A Huge New Talent

When Gaelynn Lea won NPR Music’s 2016 Tiny Desk Contest, her two decades as a musician finally crystallized in a moment of national recognition. It was also just the beginning of a grand adventure: With the wind of her award at their backs, Lea and her husband, Paul, sold their house in Northern Minnesota, quit their jobs, bought a van, and hit the road. Since then, Lea has played more than 250 shows in 42 states and seven countries, adding nearly 100,000 miles to their Ford

Econoline’s odometer. The singer/songwriter and violinist has performed everywhere from coffee shops, bars, schools and festivals; she’s graced the stage of Nashville’s Music City Roots, The Kennedy Center, House Of Blues, and even BBC World News. In June, she was featured at arts festivals in Iceland and Switzerland, and in July she performed at The Winnipeg Folk Fest and will perform at Travelers' Rest Fest in August. Lea's third album will be released on September 7; the advance single “Grace And A Tender Hand,” was recently unveilved. Gaelynn also has recorded her third full-length album, Learning How To Stay, set for release on September 7. Learn all about her at violinscratches. com.

They’re Dizzy:

Hot Band From Canada

Canada’s Dizzy — Spencer brothers Alex (guitar), Mackenzie (bass), and Charlie (drums), with his best friend since ninth grade math class, Katie Munshaw (vocals) — recently released the new track “Backstroke” from their debut LP Baby Teeth, out August 17 via Royal Mountain Records / Communion Music. Munshaw said the song “stemmed from a low, jealous point in a romance,” adding, “it’s easy to submerge yourself so deeply into a relationship that by the end of it you’re gasping for air, wondering how you got there in the first place. Sometimes all you can do is flip onto your back, catch your breath and float for a bit." Dizzy also today announced October US tour dates with SYML; the band is set to perform at The Austin City Limits Festival in October, as well as play their first headline show in London on September 18. For the Spencer brothers, making music seemed fated — thanks in large part to parents who put instruments in their hands at an early age. “They always encouraged us to learn the way we wanted to, whether that was by taking lessons or just learning songs we liked by listening to them,” Charlie recalled. Suburban boredom was another driving force behind their interest in music, and once they found a kindred spirit in Munshaw, the band began to take shape. Baby Teeth hits all record outlets and download portals on Friday in both the U.S. and Canada.
