Another NYC Music Club Forced To Relocate:

Coming on the heels of the rent-caused closing of The B.B. King Blues Club in New York City, another Manhattan music club faces an uncertain future: City Winery, the Varrick Street music showplace and actual working winery, will be forced to move by January 2020 thanks to the block being purchased by Disney – but City Winery's founder and CEO, Michael Dorf, insists there's a lot more music to come as the club will relocate. “We'll be moving to a new location by the beginning of 2020,” write Dorf. “It marks a sentimenal moment for the entire City Winery family, since this is where it all began 10 years ago … In the meantime, we've got so many more memories to make at 155 Varrick Street. We are not going anywhere before AT LEAST New Year's Eve 2019, which means we've got at least 750 concerts to enjoy.” City Winery has become a unique showplace in that it attracted major artists to its intimate environs on a regular basis; among the best-known musicians to perform there have been Citizen Cope (above), Ian Hunter, Gregg Allman, Burton Cummings (above left), Dr. John, Chris Hillman, Dave Mason, Colin Hay, Dickey Betts, Lewis Black, Ian Anderson, and other stars.

It was surprising that New York Islanders captain John Tavares join his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs after signing a lucrative long-term contract. The first thing that crossed my mind when I heard this news was that

SportsBeat With Lloyd Carroll

Tavares might have stayed with the Islanders had the team not fired inept GM Garth Snow as well ashead coach Doug Weight, who probably deserved a better fate. There is little doubt that Tavares liked both of them. What I did not know was that Tavares is engaged to a woman from Toronto. It’s easy to surmise that the families of both Tavares and his fiancee were applying pressure on him to return home. Former Mets first baseman John Olerud told me that’s exactly what happened to him when he became a free agent after the 1999 season. Olerud and his wife grew up in Seattle, but wanted to stay in New York – yet their parents applied pressure, and Olerud eventually accepted a deal from The Seattle Mariners. The Maple Leafs did a small favor for Islanders fans by sending popular former Islanders left winger Matt Martin back to the Blue & Orange in exchange for minor league goalie prospect Eamon McAdam.

It’s easy to scoff at the pundits John that believed Magic Johnson was Tavares the key factor why LeBron James selected The Los Angeles Lakers as his next NBA team. When I ran into Davis years later and told him what happened he chuckled and told me “Raptors fans can be a rabid bunch.” There’s not a lot for The New York Mets to play for, but don’t tell that to outfielder Jay Bruce who struggled in the first half of the season because of a bad hip and a case of plantar fasciitis that teamed up to send him to the disabled list. Bruce is the consummate pro and takes being a role model seriously. ESPN The Magazine held a media event to mark the 10th edition of its “Body Issue,”

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! Starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Jessica Keenan Wynn, Alexa Davies, Lily James, Julie Walters, Andy Garcia, Cher, Amanda Seyfried Directed by Ol Parker Universal Now in theaters Mission Impossible: Fallout Starring Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Henry Cavill, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg Directed by Christopher McQuarrie Paramount Now in theaters Yes, we complain about remakes and sequels all the time – but this time, at least two of these three new films have proven to be just the tonic for a world gone crazy, as music and love fill the screen in an almost quaint way. When we saw the advance preview for Disney's Christopher Robin, it was both unexpected and almost overwhelmingly touching:

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!

Instead of more modern animation techniques, Winnie The Pooh is brought back to help Christopher Robin in a guise that simply looks like everyone’s favorite stuffed animal come to life – yet seems more realistic than all the CGI we've seen in the last 10 action blockbusters. The story is simple: The adult Robin is blue and has lost his way, and here comes Pooh and his furry friends to help this good man rediscover the boy that's still inside him. Wow, did that preview pack a wallop here; buy us opening night advanced tickets and a Costcosize case of facial tissue. We're also enthusiastic about the sequel to Mamma Mia – and this is coming from a crew

that ranks Abba a notch below Bo Donaldson & The Heywoods and Starbuck on our unofficial ’70s Chart O’ Schlock. However, this is a film full of nurturing, caring characters, strong family bonds, and a lot of appreciation for both humanity and the world. We'll never enjoy flimsy pop music, but moving stories about likable people? We are so there. On the other end of the spectrum, the end of July brought the return of Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt in the latest Mission: Impossible film, which brings the same level of strong action sequences as the others, thanks to the return of the deft Christopher McQuarrie to the director's chair.

All Types Of Kinds

Join Their Adventures At Adventureland

The uniquely named area pop/rock band All Types Of Kinds will headline a special outdoor performance on Wednesday, August 1 at Adventureland in Farmingdale. The group will follow that performance with a set at The Long Beach International Film Festival’s Concert on the Beach on Friday, August 3 at 4 pm. All Types of Kinds (or ATOK, as its fans refer to the group) plays a wide variety of music, ranging from rock to pop, folk, punk, funk, hip-hop, blues, jazz, and even country – sometimes all at once. Their EP, Love Songs (Or Songs For Your Ex), debuted on Valentine's Day, and the group is currently gearing up for live dates all over the country. The band consists of Ray Rubio (guitar), Billy Conahan (guitar), Berk 0 (percussion), and Rocco Stroker (guitar). The group recently performed at The Knitting Factory in Brooklyn, certainly a high-water mark for the fast-rising unit. The band seems to have conquered social media as well as area venues: Check out ATOK on Spotify; for more info on the group: Facebook.com/ATOKMusic, Reverbnation.com/AllTypesofKinds, and ATOK's YouTube Channel.

Classic Rock

The Rock Never Stops: Steve Lukather – best known as the lead guitarist of Toto, and currently a member of Ringo Starr's All Starr Band – has written a memoir, The Gospel According To Luke (with author Paul Rees), which will be released on September 18 via Post Hill Press. “Luke” will also narrate the audiobook, which will be available via Audible. The book takes the reader behind the VIP curtain of rock and pop stardom, recounting the vibrant and frequently lurid history of a golden age of the music business. Lukather never stops; following the Ringo tour, Toto began a tour yesterday (July 30) Ringo with the resumption of Starr its “40 Tours Around & Lady The Sun” tour, which Starkey continues into 2019 with more dates and countries to be added shortly … As for Ringo Starr, we believe he's the most beloved living rocker, and with good reason: The Beatles legend celebrated his 78th birthday on July 7 in Nice, France, where he joined friends and fans in front of Hard Rock Café Nice to share a "Peace & Love" salute at noon. Ringo was accompanied by friends and family including his wife, Lady Barbara Starkey, his brother-in-law, Joe Walsh with wife Marjorie Walsh, and his All Starrs (including Graham Gouldman, Colin Hay, Lukather, Gregg Rolie, Gregg Bissonette, and Warren Ham) with "honorary" All Starr for the day Matt Sorum. The now-traditional “Peace & Love” moment invited fans from around the world to say, think, or do “Peace & Love” at noon their time. This year’s tribute included celebrations in more than 60 countries. More: ringostarr.com …. Ringo's not the only busy Beatle: Paul McCartney's first full album of new music since 2013, Toto Egypt Station, will be released in September on his longtime label, Capitol Records. Of the forthcoming album’s enigmatic title, McCartney noted: “I liked the words ‘Egypt Station.’ It reminded me of the ‘album’ albums we used to make; Egypt Station starts off at the station on the first song, and then each song is like a different station. So it gave us some idea to base all the songs around that. I think of it as a dream location that the music emanates from" … The Doobie Brothers have announced their first full-album performances on two nights at The Beacon Theatre in New York City on November 15 and 16. The band will perform Toulouse Street plus select hits on Thursday, November 15, and The Captain And Me plus select hits on Friday, November 16. These shows mark the first time The Doobie Brothers have performed at The Beacon Theatre in 25 years. Tickets: Ticketmaster.com.

A Tubb Of Memories: We've been there, and we can tell you it’s true: There's nothing else like The Ernest Tubb Record Shop, located in the heart of Nashville. The legendary store, named after the country music star of the same name, is now 70 years old – and was celebrated all over Music City USA in early June. The store, which is filled with historic records and music memorabilia, presented a lineup of celebrity autograph signings, live performances, and a host of other special events for fans. David McCormick, the owner of the shop, was honored for his ownership of the past 50 years. In that light, a surprise party was held at Hank Snow's home, The "Rainbow Ranch," by past and present employees and other famous guests such as Jan Howard, Tim Atwood, Bobby Marquez, and Midnite Jamboree emcee Jennifer Herron. "What a surprise and honor it was to be joined by my staff from past to present, along with family and friends, to celebrate 50 wonderful years of running Nashville's most famous record shop. This is truly something I will never forget," said McCormick. "I owe a lot of gratitude to not only my staff, but also to the many customers of Ernest Tubb Record Shop. Thank you, everyone." The Ernest Tubb Record Shop, open more than 70 years, features both popular and hard-to-find selections from country, bluegrass, and gospel music. The Ernest Tubb Midnite Jamboree, founded byTubb in 1947 at the original Ernest Tubb Record Shop on Broadway in downtown Nashville, is the second-longest running radio show in history. Heard weekly on WSM, the show is currently recorded from The Texas Troubadour Theatre in Nashville at 10 pm every Saturday night. For more information, find Ernest Tubb Record Shops at ernesttubb.com, on Facebook, or call (615) 255-7503. Karen Is Like 'Butter': The Virginia-based country/Americana singer-songwriter Karen Karen Jonas recently Jonas independently released her new album, Butter. With four kids at home and a touring schedule of more than 150 shows per year, Jonas has a full plate. “Whether I’m finishing up a gig at midnight or getting pounced on by my kids at 6:30 am, I usually feel like my life is a circus,” she said. “So I started writing songs about my circus.” She shines a light on the triumphs and challenges of that busy life with Butter, now making its way up the country charts. Butter was tracked at Wally Cleaver’s Recording Studio in her hometown of Fredericksburg, and Jonas would head over to the studio after putting her kids to bed. Tim Bray, her guitarist and musical partner for nearly half a decade, joined her for those nighttime recording sessions, as did a number of other musicians who laced Butter’s 10 songs with pedal steel, B3 organ, upright piano, layers of guitar, and vintage-sounding, seven-piece horn arrangements. Rhythm Tracking With Jimi LaLumia

It’s Cherry Vanilla Weather: When word reached me that a live tape of Cherry Vanilla's historic show at The Roxy UK at the height of the red-hot 1977 punk scene still existed, I felt like a long, endless search had finally come to an end. Vanilla's association with David Bowie as his public relations person during the Ziggy/ Aladdin Sane/Pin Ups era seemed to have been both a blessing and a curse for her: By representing Bowie, she would often lock horns with RCA Cherry Records, the Vanilla label that signed the British superstar, and those encounters would return to haunt her further down the road. Having served as an actress in the title role in Andy Warhol's play Pork when it hit London in the early 1970s, Vanilla had aspirations of her own – to be on stage in an acting capacity, and ultimately to front a band, which she did. Alongside Debbie Harry and Patti Smith, Cherry Vanilla was one of the females front and center during the New York city punk explosion of the mid-'70s. It was during one of her shows, at a club called On The Rox, when she was approached by Miles Copeland, an indie record label head from England who asked her to do shows in the U.K. – where his brother's then-unknown band, The Police, would serve as her opening act and play her set as well. Vanilla said yes, and with her guitarist Louie Lepore and keyboard player Zecca Esquibel, she landed in England just as The Sex Pistols and the punk scene erupted with worldwide side effects. She played the "New York Weekend" at The Roxy, as did Wayne County & The Electric Chairs and Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers. Those shows were filmed by Don Letts for his now legendary Punk Rock Movie; footage

of County and Thunders were included in the film, but Vanilla with The Police did not; more on that in a moment. RCA Records UK signed Vanilla to a worldwide deal and released her album Bad Girl as well as the single "The Punk" (the birthing moment for power pop/punk), and it was all downhill from there. RCA America refused to release the album or the single in the US. The folks she had locked horns with on behalf of Bowie were still there, and were not receptive, so a brilliant rock & roll album and an instantly catchy single were blockaded permanently. The Police, who had used Vanilla

as a door opener, seemed to slam that door immediately, and became big, powerful stars very quickly – which may be the reason why the footage was excluded from Letts' Punk movie. Vanilla survived all this nonsense and thrives to this very day – but what also survived was a fan-made tape of her opening night at The Roxy, with two thirds of The Police (Sting on bass, Stewart Copeland on drums) playing an amazing set with her. The set highlight were tracks from the Bad Girl album (“I Know How To Hook,” “Little Red Rooster,” “Foxy Bitch,” “Hard As A Rock,” “The Punk”) and some carryovers from the New York days (“Shake Some Ashes,” “White Chocolate,” “Tulsa”). BITS & PIECES Ali B

Ali B:

Mark Newman

It's been a big summer for area singer/songwriter Ali B, who has already performed at several huge fairs and outdoor events, including two shows at New Jersey’s Meadowlands State Fair in late June – and there are more festival shows in the offing. Inspired by some of today’s biggest pop music sensations from Selena Gomez to Ariana Grande, Ali began performing cover songs and later writing her own original music with the help of Klang from MTV's “Making The Band 4,” and artist and engineeer LaPorte. Noting some of her favorite experiences on her musical journey thus far, Ali said that “Every new experience is my favorite, and all of the steps in this journey mean I’m one step closer to reaching my goals.” Coming up: Another big fair performance, slated for August 17 at the popular, family oriented Adventureland Amusement Park in Farmingdale. Get her music at iTunes; learn more at AlisonBerkeMusic.com.

As he awaited the release of his latest LP, Empirical Truth (set to drop this fall via Danal Music), guitarist Mark Newman headed to China for a string of dates performing in The Dave Keyes Band. The group was booked for a nine-date tour in China. Newman's new album will feature
