THE BOUNTIFUL GOURMET Move over Smokin' Al's: There may be a new champ in town. There's nothing better than making a great food discovery by accident. During a recent visit to Islip, we came across Dang! BBQ by the railroad tracks and stopped in. The food was great, leading to a return visit for Father's Day. Dang! is a four-star threat, because it has great 'cue,

an eclectic beer menu, nine killer Mac & Cheese combos, and outrageous milkshakes. My son, who was up from Austin, Texas, declared it as good as most of the better Texas BBQ joints. We opened up with Chicken Bacon Ranch Cheese Fries, a gargantuan portion served in a skillet – hand-cut fries with cheese sauce, melted cheddar, BBQ chicken, crumbled bacon, sweet BBQ sauce, and ranch dressing. Fantastic: Eat your hearts out, poutine lovers. For the main course, we went with the Dang! three-meat combo platter. Again, a mountain of meat; we opted for the ribs, brisket and pulled pork. There were five ribs plus a huge quantity of very moist brisket and excellent pulled pork. I would rate this AAA. Also devoured was the Jurassic Pork, a football size

Dang Good BBQ In Islip burrito stuffed with pulled pork, mac and cheese, bacon, with sauce. A monster for a king. Ditto the outstanding pulled pork sandwich, and the prices were ridiculous – only $11.95 for that big boy burrito and $22.95 for the three-meat combo platter. Not full yet? Can we tempt you with a Hog Wild Mac & Cheese topped with pulled

pork, bacon, and diced sweet sausage, topped with melted cheddar and onion tanglers? Wash it down with one of their great beers including Elysian Fields; for dessert, you'll want to down one of their outrageous milkshakes. Perhaps the one with Fruity Pebbles and Fruit Loops? Great barbecue, outrageous desserts, good prices and excellent service: Dang! BBQ could be the find of the year. Dang! is located at 174 Islip Avenue in Islip. Call (631) 581-DANG or check them out at dangbbq.com for some outrageous pictures. Texas, watch out! Long Island is on the move.

Island. New Jersey had Palisades Park, the Bronx had Freedomland, and Long Island was the site of Adventureland – which was no rinky dink little park: It had amazing rides for kid of all ages, and was an instant hit. It brought large thrill rides to our area for the first time. Sitting down with co-owner Steven Gentile, he reminisced about the development of the park. Six hundred young adults work there every summer, and for many young Long Islanders, working there was a rite of passage. Adventureland pulls in 4,000 to 5,000 visitors on a good day, and children of all ages from 5 to 50 and beyond. The reason for the park’s success is that it’s family friendly, with an abundance of kiddie rides including the Carousel and Little Dipper, as well as a host of bigger rides, including Turbulence, the newest roller coaster. Adventureland

can boast of featuring the first spinning roller coaster in the Northeast, which delivers a unique riding experience every time. Over the years, there have been multimillion dollar improvements to the park, including arcade equipment has upgrades. They’re apparent everywhere; a visit to Mystery Mansion is a must. Starting the end of October, a Drop Tower Ride will be added to the mix. Also in October come Pumpkin Park, a fun two-dayevent. Looking back over the years, Steve

Gentile believes the big reason for the park’s success is that Adventureland is part of the community, and generations of customers have come back time and again. It's not a gated park, and visitors can play

games in the arcade, go on rides, and dine at the food court, which serves different selections and preparations than moar standard carnival fare. He also credits tremendous family attitude. In addition to his brother, Paul, numerous relatives work at the park in various functions. This makes it more than a job, but a delight to go to work every day. Adventureland sits on some of the most valuable real estate on Long Island, right on the Route 110 corridor. Any plans to cash out and retire to Disneyland? No way: Steve realizes what he and his family are doing is pure legacy, and they have been entrusted with the keys to our own “Magic Kingdom.” Adventureland is open all summer through October; it’s located on Route 110, minutes from the LIE. Packages for rides are available; call (631) 694-6868. Stop in and say hello. Walt would have.

FILM

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Starring Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Rafe Spall, Justice Smith, James Cromwell, B.D. Wong, Geraldine Chaplin, Jeff Goldblum Directed by J.A. Bayona Universal Pictures Been there, grabbed it in our monstrously sized maw and chewed the screaming man until there's nothing left but memories and pants, and done that. Sitting through Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is, indeed, a prehistoric experience; it's the type of film that old-timers used to pay 50 cents to see at Saturday afternoon matinees, and now, it's the type of thing that even your youngest child might look up and you and state “this again?” when you tell her you’re going to the movies (though we must report, the PG-13 rated film has a few moments of over-the-top violence you might not want your tykes to view; yeah, there's no such thing as dinosours, but if you think Skippy can handle the site of a huge dinousaur biting off someone's noggin, have at it). At the time we are writing this review, we can't see how this can pass the other summer blockbusters such as The Incredibles and the array of spandex-class superheroes currently clogging up mallplexs at the box office, but

hey, the summer's still young. This time out, the nature park is still full of dinos and assorted creatures, but a volcano is erupting and could wipe out the oversized animals, and it's up to hunky, wooden Chris Pratt and beautiful, smart Bryce Dallas Howard to come to the rescue. Frankly, that would have been enough of a plot for us – but there's also mad scientists, money-hungry businessmen, and other subplots that are about as interesting as

wondering how in the world the MegaPlex has the utter gall to charge $14.50 for that popcorn and soda combo. There are some nifty special effects, and Jeff Goldbum is always like a visit from an old friend – but watching this film is like watching “The Honeymooners” while already knowing Ralph isn't going to win The $99,000 Answer: You're doing it just to do it, just because it’s there.

Lou Lamoriello of headlines: Brooks Koepka became the first player to win the Open in consecutive years in 29 years (it should be noted that he finished one over par). Phil Mickelson caused the biggest stir when out of frustration he illegally stopped an errant putt that was careening off of the green by hitting it twice. It’s nice to know that even legends get frustrated by golf. Great Britain’s Tommy Fleetwood finished a stroke behind Koepka; he laughed when asked if he was related to Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac. “I enjoy their albums but I’m not related to Mick Fleetwood,” he said. “Alas, I have no musical talent.” The United States Golf Association is taking a page out of the PGA Tour’s tournament handbook. year, the USGA allowed partners to have booths where you could pose for gag photos alongside likenesses of PGA Tour stars such as Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth, or take a picture posing with the US Open trophy. Incidentally, the PGA Championship will be played at Bethpage Black in May. World Team Tennis’s New York Empire will be back for its third season and its second at Court 17 at The Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows beginning July 15. John Isner and Mardy Fish will be on the team’s roster this year, according to Empire head coach Gigi Fernandez. Empire general manager Michelle Cope said at last month’s press conference at The BJK National Tennis Center that she would like to get Merrick’s Noah Rubin to join the team; he did make one appearance last year. New York Islanders fans should give credit to the team’s deep-pocketed and rarely seen co-CEO Scott Malkin (the more visible co-CEO Jon Ledecky is better at the PR shtick, such as greeting fans on the LIRR and schmoozing with politicians) for ponying up the funds to buy out the golden parachute of incompetent former general manager Garth Snow and replacing him with Lou Lamoriello. My guess is that Snow probably believed that he had a few more guaranteed years with the Isles thanks to the largesse of former majority owner Charles Wang, who appeared to have man crushes on

his GMs – as evidenced by the futile nine-year run of Mike Milbury, topped by Snow’s dozen years. The Islanders may not be Stanley Cup contenders, but Lamoriello will clean up the lackadaisical country club atmosphere that was anything but businesslike. Those working at the Islanders office at 200 Merrick Avenue had best have their shoes spit-shined and their desks free of clutter and dust, as Lou will be bringing his white glove when he inspects.

John Hammond My Father's Place At The Roslyn Hotel July 13 at 8 pm • myfathersplace.com (516) 625-2700 If you're looking for a bluesy Friday night to end your work week, look no further: This died-in-the-wool blues legend can mesmerize an audience with just a voice and an acoustic guitar like few bluesmen can. Sure, he performs electric as well – but his fans seem to love it best when The Blues Hall of Famer simply whips out hisdobro and just takes off. – Bob Smith

s we went to press, the hot weather was here in abundance, and not a minute too soon: Summer has finally – finally! – arrived. The advent of July also brings about an array of free concerts in towns, villages, and municipalities all over Long Island as well. What better way to cool off after a hot day than listening to live musicians capturing the best of classic rock, country, reggae, jazz, blues, or anything else you may crave? Here are highlighted events from concert series being offered around the region; if you don't see your town listed here, contact us at gtmag@optonline.net and we'll be happy to provide the listings in a future issue. Get out and get rocking and dancing to music of all kinds, from national recording artists to up-andcoming hot local acts to cover bands – and we don't know about you, but it’s a safe bet that free is the best deal of them all. – The Editors

Much like legends such as Al Hirt, Kenny G, and other instrumental specialists, Botti doesn't perform straight jazz; instead, he's become a beloved entertainer by performing music of all styles and tempos while remaining true to his jazz roots (he's logged a trio of #1 albums on the Billboard jazz chart).

In his new role, Slaton will be charged with overseeing the programming, administration, fundraising, strategic planning and overall operation of the Center. Slaton was selected at the conclusion of a thorough national search conducted by The Arts Consulting Group. “One of the things that excited me most about the Center was the amount of investment the entire Westhampton Beach community has put into it, and not just financially,” said Slaton. “It's relatively easy for a town to get amnesia after 20 years, but everyone here still remembers a declining downtown from the mid-1990s and recognizes how essential the creation of the performing arts center has been to realizing a full 180-degree turnaround and establishing Westhampton Beach as a great tourist and second-home destination. The civic pride in the Center is just stunning.” Slaton comes to WHBPAC with almost 25 years of experience as an executive director of several successful performing arts organizations across the country. material for the wild FX hit "Pose," and, of course, "Ru Paul's Drag Race." TRL On MTV: MTV has relaunched the once-powerful after school afternoon show “Total Request Live” (aka “TRL”) – and it has returned this time as a morning event hosted by Sway.

I decided to check it out against what used to be; there are no masses of screaming kids in the street waiting for pop stars to arrive, or a crazed studio audience hooting and hollering at anything that moved. That era, for the moment at least, seems to be

over, which is a shame. Korean boy band BTS was given a quick glimpse, and there was an interview with an actress from the Netfix TV series "Glow,” and it all had a tired, no energy, goingthrough-the-motions vibe, sort of “we have to do this." It was very sad and contrived. “TRL” should be about the music, be it bubble gum, hip hop, or even the latest soundtrack album, but instead, it was about "Glow." There is now nothing special about “TRL,” and the music, in small bits, was treated as an afterthought. Hey, MTV: Perhaps you should run a stationary test pattern 24 hours a day and see if anyone notices. Still Going Gaga: Lady Gaga, of course, attended The MTV Movie Awards, presenting the Best Movie Award to Black Panther. Gaga will be starring in the third remake of A Star Is Born, a movie about a new female star in the music business; she follows in the footsteps of Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand. That's a pretty big deal, and will keep Gaga firmly in the spotlight. Every time you think she might be done, she makes it clear that she's a mainstay.

BITS & PIECES Weird Science

Weird Science:

Their Tour Is Elementary

Weird Science – the silly, sexy, and currently soaring cover band that covers several music eras – may be the busiest in the land these days, bringing their wild shows to several states in the coming weeks. The schedule includes stops in Long Island along the route: They'll perform at Hudson's On The Mile in Freeport on July 21 and August 10; The Jones Beach Bandshell on August 17; and Casino Bar in Fire Island on August 19. Learn more at weirdscienceny.com.

Ralana:

From Sweden With New Sounds

Singer/songwriter Ralana's new album, We Need Love, is the artist's comeback work, as she took a break after her 2015 solo release, Money Talks. The new album is available wherever music is sold. The new album contains Ralana's latest work as well as a

remix. "This album is the result of my new direction as an artist,” said Ralana. “Yes, it represents what I'm doing and where I'm going as a musician, but it also reflects the deep joy I feel when I make music. Music has the power to set us dancing, no matter how low we might be feeling. Music has the power to make us free." Ralana began an international career in electronic music in 2014. Releasing "Struck by Lightning" that year, she later entered a collaborative music effort with Z.O. Baren, and subsequently followed that up with the single "Money Talks," which charted in Sweden as well as globally.

immigrant youth Brooke to develop their Annabale leadership and organizing skills so they can create their own campaigns to fight for justice and dignity. After attending the Time 100 Gala in April (as one of Time's 2018 list of the "100 Most Influential People In the World"), Kesha met Cristina Jiménez, co-founder and executive director of United We Dream, and was moved when she heard how the organization is empowering youth to fight against deportations and to ensure that immigrants and communities of color can live without fear and thrive. In addition to shining a light on the organization through fundraising, Kesha dropped the music video for her Rainbow track "Hymn," a song rooted in encouraging the disenchanted to

find their place in the world. In her statement on Facebook, Kesha wrote: "This song is so important to me, and I've been holding onto this music video for awhile now, but after meeting Cristina, I felt like now was the time to release it to further bring attention to this cause." "We are excited that Kesha was inspired by the work of thousands of immigrant youth who took to the streets during the Dream Act to demand permanent protections from deportation," said Jiménez. "All across the country, immigrant youth of United We Dream are continuing to organize their cities and states. We are grateful to Kesha and to all those who are joining our fight to ensure immigrant youth are #HeretoStay." Learn more at unitedwedream.org.

Brooke Annabale: Shining In ‘The Light’

Singer-songwriter/guitarist Brooke Annibale released her third album, Hold To The Light, in early June. The new record marks her return following her 2015 album The Simple Fear, and features several major departures in terms of both songwriting and production. Annibale performed at Rockwood Music Hall in New York City curing June.

Claire Morales:

She’s ‘Wanting’ More

Born in Texas, Claire Morales began to play music at a young age. Today, Morales has made it: All That Wanting is the follow-up to her debut album, Amaranthine. Recorded by Matt Pence and Jeremy Buller at The Echo Lab near her home of Denton, Texas, Morales and her bandmates – Alex Hastings, Ryan Williams, and Russ Connell – spent six days recording the album’s 10 tracks mostly live together in the studio’s main room. While Morales writes the songs and lyrics, the arranging process iscollaborative; Morales, her three male bandmates, and other musicians contributed parts to the album, which was issued on June 29.

Thirty-five years ago, when Great South Bay Music Festival founder James Faith was playing in local clubs with his band, he had no idea that one day he would head up one of the largest, most successful music festivals on the East Coast. Like many local musicians, Faith faced the challenges of playing the club circuit: getting booked, dealing with clubs, getting paid. Little has changed in 35 years – only the names. Now in its 12th year, GSB has become one of the premiere festivals nationally, growing into a four-day splurge of talent unmatched by

most similar local efforts. Faith credits his strong links to the community as one of the reasons for his success. GSB is well-looped into the community, with nearly 200 people working on this event. Planning for next year's festival starts the day after the current one ends. It’s Faith’s attention to detail that has brought B.B. King, Graham Nash, The Doobie

Dickey Betts

Brothers, Hot Tuna, and Taking Back Sunday, as well as this year's headliners – Sublime With Rome and Dickey Betts – to Long Island. Faith has been promoting concerts on Long Island for years, and is one of the founders of The Long Island Music Hall Of Fame. As a musician, he realized there needed to be an outlet for original as well as cover bands; 75 percent of GSB consists of original acts. Some of Faith's Kerry favorites are Kearney Quarterhorse, Kerry Kearney (left, who returns for his umpteenth time), and Taking Back Sunday. Overall, Faith rates 311 as the most impressive act he's seen at his Festival. For many on Long Island, Great South Bay has become a rite of passage into the summer. Starting with modest goals and lineups the first few years, Faith noted that the Festival really kicked into high gear in 2012 when Larry Weinberger came aboard as a partner. Weinberger’s financial support and enthusiasm

helped take that “next big step” to larger acts. Faith’s other partner is his daughter, Jamie, who has been there from day one and helps with the “hands on.” Because GSB has moved into the upper echelon of festivals, it has a huge following willing to travel to Long Island for the shows. With four days of top notch entertainment that includes a Family Festival with a kidzone children's stage, Great South Bay is a festival that appeals to all ages. Great South Bay is actually four festivals in one. Thursday is popular with those who like “indie” music; Friday is all about rock and reggae; Saturday is “Jam” day with Umphrey's McGee and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong; and Sunday is Little Feat closing day with The Dickey Betts Band, Electric Hot Tuna, and The Devon Allman Project, a band to watch out for. Great South Bay also has incredibly low prices for a festival of this size and quality, and part of its proceeds go to local organizations like Stony Brook Cancer Fund. Several other charities are beneficiaries of GSB. Musicians can complain all they want about a lack of places to perform original music, but here it is: This year, GSB received more than 500 applications. Each was listened to, and the Festival has been heavily curated. You don't have to go to Austin for great music: It's in our own backyard. The Great South Bay Music Festival is July 12 through 15 at
