THE BOUNTIFUL GOURMET

Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday?: It's pretty bracing news, particularly since the chain does so well locally, particularly in locations such as Westbury and Deer park: Ruby Tuesday, once considered a leader in casual dining chains, may finally be on its last legs after years of rumors. In mid-October, it was announced that the chain is being bought out after years of flagging tallies at its locations around the country. In a way, this really shouldn't be surprising; in 2016, the chain had already closed four local outlets (in Commack, Selden, Sayville, and Farmingdale) despite hyping a new and “improved” salad bar – what the chain dubs as its “Garden Bar” – and bestowing a rather stilted advertising campaign for it that focused more on the mother of a family trying her hand at rapping than on the ingredients and features of the bar itself. It's just one of many errors Ruby Tuesday has made in recent years, according to restaurant insiders – not the least of which was failing to attract the type of upscale younger patrons who eat out often but chose chains such as Panera Bread and Chipotle

over the burgers, fries, and salads offered by the Tennessee-based Ruby Tuesday. Even Ruby Tuesday's aggressively hyped “So Connected” virtual club offering discounts failed to help matters in recent times, yet the news was still surprising: The chain is being bought out by the private equity firm NRD Capital, instead of a restaurant concern. So will NRD keep Ruby open, or will it go the way of Beefsteak Charlie's and other casual dining veterans? "With a well-established brand, differentiated from other casual

dining restaurants by its Garden Bar, we see significant opportunities to drive value for Ruby Tuesday," said NRD fonder Aziz Hashim in a statement. While the future of Ruby remains a question mark, there could be more bad news on the horizon: Other chains such as Buffalo Wild Wings, Applebee's, and Chili's are all in decline, according to the website Business Insider. Our take: The pallets of even casual dining customers have become more refined and demanding in recent years, thanks to the surprsing quality of Panera

and independent concept eateries – but who hasn't had at least one disappointing experience at a chain restaurant, where underpaid, disinterested servers and staff seem more interested in when their next break is than in insuring a clean and comfortable experience for patrons? It all boils down to a cliché that happens to be true: You get what you pay for. Landmark On Main Street’s Laura Mogul; Patchogue Theatre’s Gary Hygom

Once upon a time, there were nearly no performing arts centers on Long Island. Residents had to hitch up the buck board and head to Manhattan for their entertainment fixes. This seems like a million years ago, now more than 15 PACs grace the Island, serving as the

Landmark On Main Street’s Laura Mogul local Lincoln Centers, with several more on the way. It's a competitive environment, but most have flourished and are in expansion mode. Part of the reason can be attributed to the talented men and women who are the executive directors, guiding their flocks much as a reverend would his church followers. This is the first of a multi part series on the people behind the curtain. Laura Mogul has headed the 22-year-old Landmark On Main Street in Port Washington for nearly three years, and her mark on the operations is being shown in the strong entertainment lineup the the venue offers. Laura, who studied at UCLA and Barnard College and is a former Port Washington School Board President, brings a strong background in events and product planning to the challenging job. She worked for the top ad agency J. Walter Thompson and worked on the Revlon account. She also did stints at a company that worked on cable in the early days, and a company she worked with was one of the first to stream movies. She also spent nine years working at a company called Finish Line Road Races, which administered nearly 50 running road races annually, overseeing the registration and data on these events, including registering 8,000

runners at the Long Island Marathon. Laura took over Landmark and was met by challenges, one of her biggest being to hold on to her core audience while expanding it. Landmark is an intimate room with world class sound and acts, and part of their mission is to be a spot for the community to meet and experience entertainment from musical acts to dance, from book events to radio plays, and much more. In the past year, after hooking up with an out of town promoter who books several restored theaters throughout the metro area. Laura brought in many acts like Judy Collins, Ricki Lee Jones, Martin Sexton, and a cavalcade of name acts who shine in this smaller setting. Booking is a major challenge these days, with many venues all bidding for the same talent, which drives up the price of the acts. Laura's personal relations with many performers has aided the effort. Little known fact: Laura was on the TV hit “Jeopardy,” where the final round category was, appropriately, The Oscars. The Landmark is live nearly every Friday and Saturday night with great entertainment – and the waterfront is only a short walk from the theater. At the other end of the Island, literally, is Gary Hygom, the new executive director of The Patchogue Theatre For The Performing Arts. He brings 20 years of working at Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor to the new challenge, and he's plunging in head first. The Patchogue is a jewel of a theater, meticulously restored with plush seats and architectural details that make it a true gem. But, the Patchogue didn't seem to reach its true potential: 86% of the shows put on there were four wall rentals; someone merely came in to rent the room and bring in the show. Gary, with a strong background in the theatre, including scene designer, producer, and production management, intends to change the mix. The Patchogue will be booking many more of its own acts. Gary, who spent 12 years as a tour manager for Phoebe Snow, wants to inject “cool” into the venue. His goal is

to become a high end regional showplace, reaching new audiences with series on jazz, blues, country, rock, and comedy – plus keeping the old favorites, like the variety plays that that are presented annually, and of course, the local community-inspired shows, particularly during the holidays. Gary has quite a challenge in front of him; filling an 1,100 seat theater, Suffolk's largest, isn't easy. Patchogue has been reborn in the last 10 years, with the Patchogue being a prime mover in the community. Dozens of restaurants and new housing dot the downtown, and the Patchogue will be the beneficiary of all this. With his design background, Gary plans to give each production a certain unique feeling. Clint Black, Bobby Collins, and Lee Rocker are just a few of the stars who have graced the stage. Like all directors we met with, he is challenged by trying to book a theater in a business that is highly competitive for talent, and still

keep things within the budget. It is this challenge that guides Laura and Gary in their goal to make Long Island the true entertainment gem it is becoming. Next issue: We will visit with Clare Bisceglia at Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center and William Biddle at Tilles Center.

The New York Mets waited 48 hours after Terry Collins confirmed that he would not be returning as manager before announcing that most of the coaching staff was free to seek employment elsewhere. Pitching coach Dan Warthen

was reassigned to work in the organization, and head trainer Ray Ramirez was dismissed. My guess is that general manager Sandy Alderson would have fired Warthen outright had it not been for pitcher Noah Syndergaard voicing his support for Warthen’s retention. Alderson probably figured that it was better to mollify Syndergaard and other pitchers on the staff who have had a close relationship with their coach. Given the number of injuries the Mets have compiled the last two years, it was understandable that fans would be screaming for Ramirez’s scalp. The scuttlebutt was that Mets management would retain him since they didn’t view him as the culprit. In fairness to Ramirez, retired Yankees

October Rolling: The past month turned out to be a huge one for Long Island bowlers; and here are two examples why: Novara’s A Supernova: Joe Novara of East Patchogue, already known for winning several area tournaments, becoming a Long Island Masters champion, and for operating The Perfect Fit Pro Shop at Port Jeff Bowl, has pretty much done the impossible: On October 16, the right-hander, pictured at right, lived out every bowler’s dream: He rolled a 900 series in the Monday Invitational League at East Islip Lanes. According to the USBC, Novara is the 33rd bowler overall, and fourth from the Empire State, to record a 900 series. His feat is pending approval from USBC, and will mark be the 34th USBCapproved 900. The achievement the first perfect set of the 2017-2018 season, and fourth during the 2017 calendar year. "I really didn't feel any pressure while I was bowling, but now that it's had a chance to sink in, it's pretty unbelievable," Novara said, as reported by the USBC. "It's one of those things you dream of, but you never think it will really happen. When I get lined up, I just seem to strike a lot. It's hard to describe. I always felt like 900 was possible, but to actually do it is something else." Novara noted his main focus is his pro shop – but he’s now being hailed as one of the best this area has ever produced. – With USBC Reports

trainer Gene Monahan spoke highly of Ramirez at a Conair media event. Alderson publicly agreed with Monahan’s assessment, but likely realized that retaining Ramirez might lead to a revolt among season ticket holders and probably concluded that it would be best to bring in a fresh face as the team’s trainer in 2018. Mets captain David Wright recently endured a second surgical procedure on his back within the last 18 months. Last month, he underwent surgery to correct a shoulder malady. None of these procedures can correct the spinal stenosis that he will have for the rest of his life. Wright still stated that he has not given up on resuming his Mets career; Noah his determination is Syndergaard admirable. While I hope that he proves naysayers like me wrong, the reality is that he will turn 35 just before Christmas. Even with prefect health, it would be tough for any major leaguer at that age to be productive who hasn’t played in nearly two years. I was saddened by the recent death of New York hoops legend Connie Hawkins at age 75. Genova earned $1,500 for second place, while fellow Herrill league bowler Archie Nabas of Queens Village finished third with a 223 worth $750. Rounding out the final six in the shootout: Johnny Kim of Fresh Meadows ($600), Staci Minkoff of Flushing ($550), and Ed Marquez of Elmont ($500). The shootout, which paid out $6,900, was not decided until the final frame. Genova got off to a hot start with four strikes to take an early lead, and held it until he opened three times in the middle of the game. Mike Werben, an Crea employee at Herrill, kept filling frames, and when Genova doubled in the 9th and 10th frames, he forced Werben to fill 18 pins – and he did exactly that by rolling a strike on his first ball in the final frame to secure

FILM The Blockbusters Of Autumn

We always prefer summer – who doesn't? – but August and early September were, even by Hollywood standards, bereft of film blockbusters or even notable hits, for that matter. Patience, mallplex denizens: Autumn is approaching, there's going to be more “big” movies than you can shake a box of Lemonheads at. Here are (in our humble opinion) the films that will be, as Tony Randall's Felix Unger once put it, “big coin” in the coming weeks:

Star Wars: The Last Jedi (December 15, Walt Disney Studios): It's the return of Luke Skywalker. Wait, let us tell you more: It's the return of Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker – and there's even going to be an appearance by the beloved Carrie Fisher as Princess Lea.

Yankees were defeating The Cleveland Indians Game 5 of the American League Division Series. Waterman made it no secret that he was rooting for the Yankees to face the Astros in the ALCS. Not only would Houston hotels benefit from New Yorkers traveling to root for the “Bronx Bombers,” but it would also show the New York media that Houston has recovered nicely from the devastation of Hurricane Harvey and is open for business. HBO’s “Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel” is used to winning Sports Emmy Awards, but two weeks ago it won an Emmy at the News & Documentary Awards ceremony for “Cost Of The Game: The Dangers Of Youth Football.” Producer Nick Dolin told me that many school districts and Pop Warner leagues are thinking of switching from tackle football to flag football in an effort to reduce both knee and shoulder issues to the long-term disabling effects of head injuries. “The sooner you begin tackle football, the sooner the clock starts ticking on the dangers of head trauma,” said Dolin. ESPN, again: Katie Nolan, one of the most identifiable personalities on Fox Sports 1, is jumping ship to ESPN beginning in January. The rumor mill ESPN had her paired with Mike Greenberg on his morning TV show when it debuts, but at press time those rumors were shot down. It will be fascinating to see whether ESPN’s Jemele Hill, whose controversial remarks about President Donald Trump being a white supremacist and about boycotting NFL advertisers (which led

to a recent two-week suspension) will ultimately lead to higher ratings for the SC6 (Sportscenter at 6 PM) weeknight show that she co-hosts. Certainly, there is more awareness of this show than ever before. Actor and diehard Knicks fan Michael Rapaport has just written his first book, This Book Has Balls (Simon & Schuster), in which he rants on his sports likes and dislikes in exactly the earthy manner that you would expect from him.

challenges yet: He's still got trickster Loki running around, he has to save Asgard from destruction, and he's gonna have to square off against another Avenger, The Incredible Hulk. Boom! Smash! Pow!

Thor: Ragnarok

Justice League Justice League (November 17, Warner Bros.): Batman, Aquaman, Cyborg, Superman, The Flash … and the return of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. The DC franchise could pass Marvel in terms of popularity if this film is as big as Wonder Woman was earlier this year. Thor: Ragnarok (November 3, Walt Disney Studios): DC over Marvel? This one will tell the tale: Hunky Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor, who faces his greatest

A Bad Moms Christmas (November 3, STXfilms): The first comedy was gangbusters on cable, and this one should be bigger than the first. It's probably the first “women's comedy” that scored just as high with men, thanks to an incredible cast featuring Mila Kunis, the uproarious Kathryn Hahn, and Kristen Bell – and this time, Cheryl Hines (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) joins in the fun. Kingsman: The Golden Circle (Still in theaters, 20th Century Fox): This is another film that, while it was an unexpected hit the first time out, has buoyed by those who discovered the first one on pay cable. It's more spy shenanigans as the world is imperiled, not to mention the Kingsmen themselves; Julianne Moore and Halle Berry join the cast, and Elton John (!) even makes an appearance. It’s been a hit without needing much prodding.

Almost Queen – which stormed out of the region just a few years ago to become a national force as well as one of the most heralded tribute bands in America – returns on Saturday, November 18 at 8 pm at NYCB Theatre At Wesbury Tickets and information: thetheatreatwestbury.com and (516) 334-0800. This show will be the second stop on a fall tour that's taking the area-based tribute legends throughout the east coast. Almost Queen’s August performance at Suffolk Theatre in Riverhead is still being talked about by area tribute band fans as one of the best of the year, and shows such as that concert have kept the band in demand each time they return to their home region. The group has become so successful that it has even headlined on AXS TV's “The World's Greatest Tribute Bands” series, which features cover bands at at the top of their popularity; Amost Queen performed on the April 12 edition of this long-running series. This weekly concert series brings music fans iconic bands such as The Police, The Beatles and Pink Floyd ... or, in this case, more-than reasonable facsimiles of those groups. Host Katie Daryl introduces concerts that are filmed at famous music venues in the Los Angeles area. Not only do the performers sound like their more-famous inspirations, but also they often derive their band names from the bands that they cover. The appearence by Almost Queen ranks as one of the show’s high water marks, according to their rabid fans. The Almost Queen lineup is surely familiar to area fans by now: Joseph Russo as Freddie Mercury, Steve Leonard as Brian May, Randy Gregg as John Deacon, and John Cappadona as Roger Taylor.

hadn’t even heard a demo tape. That’s because the FF lineup was so powerful in the area that Smith knew he had a good band in his prescence, and Smith, as usual, was right on the money. Many of Funk's members had performed regularly at The Brokerage, and Smith knew the caliber of fine musicians he was dealing with. Funk “Philharmonia” perfomed its first show on November 21, 1985. Since that first gig, there have been few changes in the band's lineup; fans love Filharmonik's big, fat, fiery horn sound and chunky rhythmic vibe.

An In-Depth Look At The Hottest Area Artists A Top Band’s

New Era

Who: The weeks to come will herald the return of Deer Park-based Schroeder’s Ghost, a multi-faceted group that’s quite unlike most on the area scene in that it brings audiences the gamut of the popular musical spectrum: Blues, rock, funk, jazz, country, and original songs. As the band itself put it: “We’re your all-service band!” This BlokHed Records group is now comprised of Colleen Farquhar (saxophone), Pam Dixon (vocals, harmonica, percussion), Paul Cruz (bass and vocals), Tom Stiegler (drums and vocals), Richard Forman (keyboards), and Tommy Higgins (guitar and vocals). The group also features six-part harmonies and spectacular lighting and sound, making this as major league a music experience as any you’ll find in any club in this region. The Artists & Their Sound: The band’s bio: “Schroeder’s Ghost is a five-piece force of rock and blues nature who have made a name for themselves by featuring a treasure trove of eclectic little musical nuggets that continuously bring down the house, and by putting on a show that will leave you feeling like you've just been to a concert at Madison Square Garden. “All the band members are veterans of the tri-state music scene and abroad, and have shared the stage with many national artists and bands over the years. These uber-talented musicians share a camaraderie and level of professionalism rarely seen these days, which directly translates to the quality of the product. The band has a slammin' set of unique tunes on their menu that you don't hear often (if you've heard them at all), and they serve 'em up in a most interesting way. But, alas, this is something that must been seen and heard, as merely reading about it can't possibly capture the essence that is Schroeder's Ghost.” If Stielger’s name seems familiar, it should be: He’s the head of the nationally renowned BlokHed Studios. As a veteran musician, this respected music pro wouldn’t be inolved in just any project. “This is – by far – the best lineup we've ever had,” said an enthusiasic Stiegler. “I'm very proud of this band and the work we all have put in so far. It's truly wonderful to work with people who are just great human beings, and who genuinely enjoy being together.” To Learn More & Contact The Artists: The official “welcome back” extravaganza for Schroeder’s Ghost will be December 22 at Sunset Grill in Seaford; they’ll return there on February 2, and will perform on January 22 at Bobbique in Patchogue. Find the band at the newly updated schroedersghost.com, or find them at Facebook, ReverbNation, and Twitter.

Jerry’s Jungle: Stranded In The Jungle: Jerry Nolan's Wild Ride is a new book by Curt Weiss. It's a fun but also eye-opening look at the life of the astoundingly underrated drummer of The New York Dolls and the Johnny Thunders Heartbreakers, who were around before Tom Petty used the name (or took the name, according to

some). Nolan's rough and tumble life is presented in startling detail, as, like many rock & roll band members, we hear some horror stories that are part and parcel of the profession, especially back in the non-PC 1960s and ’70s. What cannot be denied is the natural music talent that Nolan displayed from his very early days once he arrived in New York. The New York Dolls, one of the prime movers in the birth of punk, are still not inductees into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame as of this writing. Team Taylor: Since I pronounced my enjoyment of the new Taylor Swift material, she has exposed even more – and I have to say, to my ears, these are tunes I will be happy to hear for years to come. "Ready For It” has followed "Look What You Made Me Do," and I can only hope and imagine that the entire new album

will be cut from the same cloth. The early “country girl” version of Swift was not to my liking, and her pop-o-rama "Shake It Off" period seemed forced to me. Now, however, the new direction seems timely and authentic, and if she continues to evolve as she has in this past decade, she'll be around for a very long time. I'm Team Taylor! Calling The Police: Sting and Stewart Copeland, original members of The Police, may or may not be all that amused by the surfacing of a cassette tape from the Roxy club in the UK that was recorded round 1977, when they played an early set of their own (with original band guitarist Henri Padovani) – and afterward came back on stage as part of Cherry Vanilla's band, performing songs from her great RCA UK album Bad Girl. Audio from any of The Police/Vanilla gigs has been a holy grail for decades, and now, someone in the UK has shown up with a raw but very real tape from that historic night in that equally historic club. We have yet to hear it, but we’ll post more info as the news develops. "I wanna rock and roll, I wanna be a punk!" – Cherry Vanilla, 1977.

Rolling Stones: They’re ‘On Air’

December 1 will see the release of The Rolling Stones – On Air, a collection of rarely heard radio recordings from their formative years. Twickets:

A New Era For Live Music? Do you remember what it was like to buy a face value ticket for your favorite show or event? Europe's

leading face value resale ticketing platform, Twickets, has launched in the U.S. (twickets.live), enabling music fans to securely trade tickets at no more than face value for concerts and live events throughout the country. Twickets has received support thus far from several international music stars, including Adele, Ed Sheeran, Mumford & Sons, Queen, and The XX. The platform recently launched in the U.S. in partnership with artists such as Niall Horan, Pixies, PVRIS, and Wilco, with more names to be announced soon. Since its launch, Twickets users have saved other fans on the platform over $20 million in inflated prices and fees for event tickets. "We started Twickets to provide an alternative for true fans who genuinely couldn't make a show, ensuring another fan attended in their place," says Twickets founder and entrepreneur Richard Davies. "This is something our team truly believes in, and this belief has been well received thus far in the U.K. and, most recently, in Australia. We are excited to bring Twickets to the U.S., and we look forward to its growth and expansion in one of the world's biggest live-event markets." Twickets first launched in the U.K. in February 2015 as an alternative to secondary ticket sites that price genuine fans out of attending events, and ultimately harming the live industry. It has received massive success thus far with over 500,000 users, and counting. Earlier this year, the platform expanded to Australia. Visit twickets.live to buy and sell tickets and to learn more.
