BITS & PIECES Lana Del Rey

Del Rey Of Light:

Lana Earns Second #1

Interscope Records artist Lana Del Rey scored her second US #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart, as her new album, Lust For Life, opened atop the list. Lust for Life sold more than 107,000 copies in its opening week alone. Lust For Life showcases singles such as “Love,” the title track, “Coachella – Woodstock On My Mind,” “Summer Bummer,” and “Groupie Love,” and features collaborations with The Weeknd, A$AP Rocky, Playboi Carti, Stevie Nicks, and Sean Lennon. The new album is available in all formats now. Other albums that have recently reached the lofty #1 position in Billboard have been Kendrick Lamarr's Damn, which in recent weeks has bounced in and out of the top perch, and Kesha's Rainbow, with hit #1 in mid-August and cements her comeback.

Kesha

Learns To 'Let Go'

More on Kesha: Her third single from that new #1 disc is "Learn To

Kesha

Let Go," which follows the previously released songs "Praying" and "Woman." The song finds Kesha choosing redemption over resentment, embracing the past without being defined by it as she sings: "The past can't haunt me if I don't let it/Live and learn and never forget it." Kesha wrote the song with Stuart Crichton and her mother, Pebe Sebert, and Crichton produced the track with Ricky Reed. One of the first songs written for Rainbow, it connects Kesha to her earlier hits with her signature swaggering rapidfire vocal delivery and a celebratory chorus while combining it with the organic sonic landscape of live instrumentation. The new album is now available everywhere via RCA Records.

Sharing Madonna's Vision

MG Icon, the joint venture between Iconix Brand Group, Inc., Guy Oseary and Madonna, unveiled Material Girl's Fall marketing campaign entitled "A Day In The Life" starring recording artist and Material Girl fashion director Pia Mia. The campaign creative is inspired by the young starlet's Los Angeles go-to hotspots. Phoebe Emerging superstar Ryan

Phoebe Ryan has released her new single, “Forgetting All About You” featuring Blackbear; the song features artwork created by Ryan herself, and is set to be included on her upcoming sophomore EP due out this fall. “Last year, I spent a month or two in a wild daze, convinced I didn't need anyone or anything to tie me down. I was fearless, reckless, and super high on life. Even when I was home alone and watching cartoons naked, it was a freakin party,” said Ryan. “’Forgetting All About You’ was written in the midst of those days with close friends who understood that I needed a song to celebrate my independence and all the nonsense that came along with it.” Ryan was first recognized for her mashup of R. Kelly’s “Ignition” and Miguel’s “Do You,” which reached #1 on Hype Machine and has gone on to accumulate more than 30 million Spotify streams to date. the big names in the cast. Expect the relatively unknown singers to be anything but anonymous by December. Seth MacFarlane has long had a working relationship with Fox, so it’s not surprising that they would indulge him with an hour-long series in which he is the titular star. “The Orville” appeared, based on its two-minute promotional clip, to be a comedic spoof of “Star Trek” in the vein of the 1999 Tim AllenSigourney Weaver film “Galaxy Quest.” MacFarlane has stated that he wants “The Orville” to be a serious homage to Star Trek. Don’t be surprised if Fox executives talk to MacFarlane about trimming the show to 30 minutes and playing it strictly for laughs if the ratings tank early. Thankfully, sitcom stalwarts Craig Robinson and Adam Scott have no qualms going for guffaws in “Ghosted”; as the name indicates, it’s a weekly halfhour homage to “Ghostbusters,” as all things relating to the supernatural are ripe for satire. The CW: The network is relaunching the 1980s ABC soap opera CBS: “Dynasty,” with the show Young bringing all of Sheldon the backstabbing and family feuding. It's hard to figure out how the actors involved were able to keep a straight face reciting their lines, since the humor is so campy. “Valor” is a soap opera in which conspiracies will be unveiled, along with tales of romance in the armed forces.

s the summer season ends – with HBO's “Game Of Thrones” the most talked-about series on TV, and “The Big Bang Theory,” “This Is Us,” “The Empire,” and “The OT” ranking as huge hits – here’s a look at what the broadcast networks have in store this fall: CBS: This was America’s most-watched network last year, and they are debuting what would should be a foolproof new show: “Young Sheldon,” a spinoff of “The Big Bang Theory.” The show will focus on the awkward childhood years of the show’s Sheldon (played by Jim Parsons, who serves as an executive producer). pre-adolescent. Another sure thing should be the reboot of a '70s action show “S.W.A.T.,” with Shemar Moore as the leader of an elite Los Angeles police tactical unit. At the recent Television Critics Association conference, Moore said that he wants to tell Los Angeles law enforcement stories from a minority viewpoint. 1991; at age 40 today; and looks ahead to when he’s 65 in 2042. NBC: When the original cast of “Will & Grace” – Debra Messing, Eric McCormack, Sean Hayes, and Megan Mullally – played their characters for a video that supported Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, it garnered a lot of attention – including that of NBC executives, who wondered if the cast would consider reprising their roles in a weekly series again. The answer was a resounding yes, and it is

returning for at least the next two seasons. “The Brave” concerns a special operations military force that undertakes what seem to be impossible missions; Anne Heche is the best-known cast member. With so many other shows and movies dealing with the same plot device, combined with the fact that this is not the kind of program one associates with NBC, the odds of good ratings would seem to be as daunting as their mission of the week. ABC: A sure pick for the breakout TV star of 2017: Comedic actor Brandon Micheal Hall, who has the charisma and talent of a young Will Smith. Hall has the title role in “The Mayor”; his character is an aspiring hip hop performer who comes up with the idea of running for mayor of his small city as a publicity stunt to promote his music – but the joke is on him as he wins the election and has to face a pile of responsibility. One show that will certainly catch attention is “The Good Doctor,” where the premise is whether a top-flight surgeon has a place in medicine if he happens to be autistic. British actor Freddy Highmore, who has played more than his share of offbeat characters, is Dr. Sean Murphy, a technical wiz in the operating room but whose interpersonal skills do not fall into the category of traditional bedside manner. The executive producer of “The Good Doctor” is David Shore, the creative force behind “House.” The one clunker to avoid is “Kevin Probably Saves The World,” starring Jason Ritter as an Ordinary Joe forced to change his ways when he encounters a guardian angel. We’ve seen variations of this theme for years on TV, and it has been done better previously, based on the clip supplied to reviewers. Although it won’t be airing until mid-season, “American Idol,” with Ryan Seacrest hosting and Katy Perry making $25 million as one of the judges, jumps to ABC two years after Fox ended its run. Fox: Although its ratings sagged a bit last season, “Empire” remains the Fox’s flagship show outside of “The Simpsons,” which looks as if it will run forever. Not surprisingly, “Empire” is launching a spinoff, “Star,” about a female vocal group looking to make it big in the music biz; you can think of it as “Dreamgirls” meets Bob Fosse because of the singing and elaborate choreography. Alderson was able to move both Lucas Duda and Addison Reed before the deadline and get some value in return, but the GM also traded Neil Walker, Jay Bruce, Curtis Granderson, and Rene Rivera after the deadline for basically bupkis. Only masochistic baseball fans get excited by their team getting back minor leaguers who are suspects more than prospects, mysterious players to be named later, and cash considerations. New York Yankees counterpart, Brian Cashman, handled things in late July in 2016; the Yankees were in far stronger shape than the Mets were at the deadline, but Cashman didn’t think that they had the talent to win a World Series. He moved relievers Aroldis Chapman and Andrew Miller and got back a treasure trove of prospects who are almost certain to help his team in the future. Was anyone really surprised that the Yankees swept the four-game Subway Series? That humiliation was likely insult to injury for the Mets' faithful. Even in bad years, it means a lot to fans to play well against a crosstown rival. It’s time for Mets catcher Kevin Plawecki to finally prove his worth. Kevin Even though he's a Plawecki first-round draft choice, Plawecki has been a major disappointment as he has struggled to hit .200 at the big league level. Alderson is giving the catcher one last shot to prove himself. If he continues to be an automatic out, expect Plawecki expect him to be cut from the team’s 40-man roster at the end of the season. It will be interesting to see how Derek Jeter handles things now that he is (probably, as the

deal wasn't finalized at press time) the business face of the Miami Marlins. Jeter was always courteous to the media, but it was clear that he didn’t really enjoy shmoozing with the press. He was also not one to pose for photos with fans the way that Aaron Judge cheerfully does. As Marlins president, Jeter is going to have to engage in that Brian Cashman kind of PR work, especially with season ticket holders and corporate sponsors. Alex Rodriguez has been on the cover of countless sports mags, but he broke new terrain last month when his countenance was on the front of The Hollywood Reporter. “A-Rod” has been a co-host on “Live With Kelly,” and has been a panelist on “The View.” ABC executives were so impressed with his work that they inked him to be an occasional contributor to their news division. Rodriguez will also launch a show on CNBC, “Back In The Game,” in which he and other experts dispense financial advice to down-on-their luck athletes. In addition to all this, Rodriguez continues to be a Fox Sports MLB air personality. Morning television has never been robust for sports programming, but that may be changing. Things First,” which stars NFL Hall of Famer and ESPN air personality Cris Carter, exKansas City sports talk radio jock Nick Wright, and former “Weekend Today” co-host Jenna Wolfe. Expect in-depth interviews, essays, debates, and the obligatory highlight reels. FS1 was smart to get this show on the air before ESPN debuts Mike Greenberg’s much-ballyhooed sunrise show. Veteran Daily News NFL columnist Gary Myers has written a book, My First Coach

(Grand Central Publishing), where he getcurrent and former NFL quarterbacks to open up about their dads, and in the process, themselves. On the light side, Ryan Fitzpatrick talks about his dad’s reaction to him leading the Harvard Crimson, while on a darker note, Phil Simms details his strained relationship with his alcoholic, abusive dad. The New York Jets will probably be an awful football team this year, but they always display culinary pride: There now will be more sushi and barbecue concession stands. “Gang Green” is also promising an expansion of their $7 value meal menu. Let’s hope that they play well enough so that no one gets indigestion. With Serena Williams missing the 2017 U.S. Open because of her pregnancy, it will be interesting to see who’ll be the last American player left standing this year. In the last few years, no American male or female player without the surname of Williams has made it into the tournament’s second week. One of the best kept secrets of the U.S. Open takes place the week before it officially gets underway as some of the best players in the world compete in the Qualifiers and it’s free to watch. The United States Tennis Association has in recent years has dubbed the Wednesday of that week “Queens Day.” The USTA employs a stage where artists from the borough get a chance to

perform, and it also allows representatives from such attractions as The Queens Zoo, Queens Botanical Gardens, The Louis Armstrong House Museum, and The Hall of Science to set up promotional booths, which in turn are a boon to the local economy.

The HooDoo That They Do So Well: One of the area's most successful New Orleans-style bands, The HooDoo Loungers, returns to Treme in Islip on Saturday, September 16 in what promises to be another night of fun and revelry. To learn more, call Treme at (631) 277-2008. Comprised of Joe Lauro (bass and vocals), David Deitch (keyboards, accordion, and vocals), Michael Schiano (guitar), Marvin Joshua (vocals), Dave Giacone (drums), Brian Sears (saxophones), Dawnette Darden (lead vocals), Ed Leone (trombone), and Gary Henderson (trumpet), this is a big band with a big, bold sound that's buoyed by a rousing, upbeat show. Their 2013 self-titled album helped make the band a national name, and the group has just completed a busy summer performing at top clubs, bandshells, and amphitheaters. The group returns to Treme with Mardi Gras in mind – but then

The HooDoo Loungers again, this is a big group that always seems to have New Orleans in mind, as their sound is as authentic as what you'll find on Bourbon Street any night of the week. Johnson's Got Rhythm(land): Slide guitar master Dennis Johnson has announced a September 15 release date for Rhythmland, his latest CD on the Root Tone Records label. Johnson released his first single from the new disc, “Timbale,” to iTunes on August 1. Rhythmland was produced by Johnson and Craig Long, and recorded at Paradise Studios in Sacramento. On the CD, Johnson is backed by his band, dubbed The Mississippi Ramblers: Tim Metz on drums, Jonathan Stoyanoff on bass, and Craig Long on keyboards and background vocals. Johnson also wrote nine of the album’s 10 songs and spins a unique take on the classic “Walkin’ Blues.” Rhythmland explores Americana, roots, blues, Latin, rock and folk rhythms with Johnson’s trademark improvisational sections. “I wanted to make a diverse album with great rhythms, lyrics and improvisation,” said Johnson. “The rhythms on the record really pull the listener in. That’s one reason we called the record Rhythmland.” Inspiring lyrics and vocals are spotlighted on songs like “Faith” and “That Way No More.” Noted Johnson: “I am really happy with the lyrics on this record. The lyrics are based on life experiences and delve into important guiding principles to help you get through the ups and downs of life. These are lessons I have lived.”

More Netflix News: Prolific writer, producer and television hitmaker Shonda Rhimes – quite possibly, the most powerful woman in TV – is bringing her Shondaland production company to Netflix under a multiyear deal to produce new series and other projects. Longtime producing partner Betsy Beers makes the move to Netflix as well. The move further unites Rhimes with Netflix. While Shondaland’s award-winning series such as “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal,” and “How To Get Away With Murder” air in the U.S. on ABC – and will continue to – “How To Get Away With Murder” streams everywhere else in the world on Netflix, with the other pair of shows available on Netflix in many regions as well. “Shonda Rhimes is one of the greatest storytellers in the history of television,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer, Netflix. “Her work is gripping, inventive, pulse-pounding, heart-stopping, taboo-breaking television at its best. I’ve gotten the chance to know Shonda and she’s a true Netflixer at heart – she loves TV and films, she cares passionately about her work, and she delivers for her audience. We’re so excited to welcome her to Netflix.” "Shondaland’s move to Netflix is the result of a shared plan Ted Sarandos and I built based on my vision for myself as a storyteller and for the evolution of my company,” said Rhimes. “Ted provides a clear, fearless space for creators at Netflix. He understood what I was looking for – the opportunity to build a vibrant new storytelling home for writers with the unique creative freedom and instantaneous global reach provided by Netflix’s singular sense of innovation. The future of Shondaland at Netflix has limitless possibilities. Our current shows will continue to thrive on ABC and Shondaland will be there every step of the way. I could not have asked for a better home to begin my career. I continue to be grateful to work with so many talented people – especially our studio gladiator Patrick Moran, and our most powerful and brilliant champion, Channing Dungey. Starting today, we are thrilled to begin creating new ABC’s Shondaland stories with Grey’s Netflix. Everyone at Anatomy Shondaland is honored to expand both our audience and our creative identity with Ted and the entire team at Netflix." Shondaland is the production company behind the television series “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal,” “How To Get Away With Murder,” “Private Practice” and the upcoming “For The People” and “Untitled Grey’s Anatomy Spinoff.” Founded by Rhimes and joined by producing partner Beers, during the course of the last decade Shondaland has earned numerous awards, including a Golden Globe, the Peabody Award, GLAAD Media Awards, NAACP Image Awards, and eight Emmy Awards. The company has also been honored by the Television Academy, Producers Guild of America, The Directors Guild of America, and The Writers Guild of America, among others. In addition, Shondaland expanded into the digital space with the launch of its first wewsletter; Shondaland.com should be a reality by the time you read this. Netflix has also announced a new venture with legendary late night host David Letterman, with a new, original program forthcoming. Photo: Grey’s Anatomy courtesy ABC

Rivershine Shines: From Louisville, a city steeped in the history of country music, bluegrass, folk, jazz, and more, comes RiverShine (formerly Borderline9), which recently began working with producer Mark Slaughter on its new album, All About The Ride, soon to be released. RiverShine began as guitarist Dave Helbig was looking for musically inclined friends to work on a new record. Helbig found young drummer Logan Giles; next was bass player Alex Roberts of Phoenix, who had moved to the area. Rounding out the group is new vocalist Ryan Scott Brenzel, who graduated with a degree in Vocal Performance from Bellarmine University along with a degree in psychology, and has performed with The Ryan Scott Band. With the group ready, it recently hit the studio with the platinum selling Slaughter, has has toured and worked with the likes of Kiss, Ozzy Osbourne, Poison, and Damn Yankees. The release date for All About The Ride will soon be announced. Honoring Glen: In recent years, country music star Tanya Tucker has been quietly writing and recording new music while coping with a wave of emotions surrounding Glen Campbell’s battle with Alzheimer's disease. While their relationship and breakup made headlines years ago, Tucker channeled her heartfelt feelings for Campbell into a song, “Forever Loving You.” A portion of the proceeds from this recently released song will benefit Alzheimer's Foundation of America, a nonprofit organization which provides programs and services for people living with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers, as well as funds research towards a cure for Alzheimer’s. Tanya Tanya Tucker’s stateTucker ment on the death of Glen Campbell: “I’m just devastated. Absolutely devastated. It’s been so hard these past several years knowing what he’s been going through. My heart just breaks. Glen and I shared some incredible, precious memories together for a long time. There were some ups and downs and, of course, all the downs were played out in the press. We both got past all that. Forgiveness is a wonderful thing. It’s why I’m releasing ‘Forever Loving You’ in memory of Glen, and for all of those who are losing or have lost someone they love. I’ll forever love you, Glen.” Tucker co-wrote “Forever Loving You” with Michael Lynn Rogers and Rusty Crowe, a Tennessee State Senator who co-sponsored The Campbell/Falk Act; the Tennessee law protects communication rights for people who've become wards of the state and those who have conservators over their financial and living situations.

We tend to feel a bit melancholy this time of year; although August was hot, the passage of time into September – the unofficial end of summer (it got cool so quickly, didn’t it?) – always makes us more than a bit wistful. Audio Workstations Inc. in Islandia seems to have become a music professional's choice in recent times, and for good reason: It's a serious workplace for audio professionals. It's a revolutionary concept; the company's services include membership for audio engineers and producers; weekly studio access; and the ability for studios pros to set their own session rates. “Our purpose is to provide the audio professional

with regular, part-time access to an office space that is in fact a commercial recording studio equipped with respected audio gear, and yet priced at an affordable rate,” stated the company. “This allows the modern-day audio and music professional to operate their business privately, professionally, and profitably.” It's truly run by engineers for engineers: Founders John Jerome and Matthew Einsidler of Audio Workstations both come from a background in freelance recording, audio education, and studio management. Noticing a lack of available (meaning modern yet affordable) recording studio space, they saw a need for a studio that would be the perfect middle ground between the existing options of working from a home studio and the traditional large format commercial studios. Clients are raving about the constant upkeep of the facility, as well as the constant additions of new and innnovative equipment on site. Learn more by calling Audio

Psst: There’s Anthrax In Your Coffee: Anyone who knows Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante knows his love for the taste of coffee – and now, he's proven it: Two years ago, he launched his own line, Benante's Blend. Today, having forged a collaboration with Chicago's Dark Matter Coffee Co., Benante's Blend has undergone enhancements that include higher quality choice of coffee beans, a change in the way the beans are roasted that give the coffee a larger and more flavorful taste, and other tweaks. Now, Benante and Dark Matter have announced announce the relaunch of Benante's Blend. The coffee will still be available in two varieties, the "Be All End All" blend which is a dark roast with a real kick, and the "Forever Metal" blend, a milder coffee (pictured at right). And, despite the upgrades, Benante is keeping the price the same. "I'd been hearing about Dark Matter for awhile," said Benante. nosed with leukemia, Bessie reaches out to her long-estranged sister Lee (Janeane Garofalo, in her Broadway debut) and nephews Hank (Jack DiFalco) and Charlie in Ohio to see if they are a match for a bone-marrow transplant. Based on playwright Scott McPherson’s grandmother’s illness and written at the height of the AIDS epidemic in 1990 (McPherson’s partner would die of AIDS in 1992 and the playwright nine months later at 33), this 1991 off-Broadway hit – in its Broadway premiere under Anne Kauffman’s direction – balances a heartwarming celebration of caregivers’ generosity of spirit and love with a very dated, broad sitcom sensibility, especially in the characters of the bumbling, name-forgetting Dr. Wally and a supercilious nursing home administrator. coffee, doing some tasting and I have to say, I felt like I was part of this coffee family. Everyone there really enjoys the art of coffee, as do I, so this was something I was really interested in being a part of. We worked together to come up with what I feel is a perfect cup of coffee, and I'm happy to say that my Benante's Blend is under the umbrella of the Dark Matter coffee family." Benante spent a good deal of time over the last 10 months in Dark Matter's "cupping lab," tasting a variety of coffees, different blends, flavors and roasts. After numerous blind tastings, he zeroed in on what would make his perfect cup of coffee. "One of the most exciting things about working with Dark Matter," Benante added, "is that they're not just going to put out my two Benante's Blend coffee line; we're already talking about our next project, another coffee idea that will blow people away, and we're all really excited about that."

he drives through. Thus opens Martyna Majok’s engrossing and exceedingly moving play about two disabled people in wheelchairs and the caregivers who assist them – one out of love, guilt and kindness, the other out of desperate financial need. In alternating scenes on Wilson Chin’s rotating set, we meet John (Gregg Mozgala), a well-to-do Princeton grad student with cerebral palsy who hires Jess (Jolly Abraham), a Princeton graduate to bathe and dress him each morning. Jess desperately needs to supplement her earnings as a cocktail waitress. With prodding, the guarded Jess reveals hints of the hard life she has survived to give herself a better life. In alternating flashback scenes, we see Eddie making overtures to assist his estranged wife Ani (the wonderfully prickly Katy Sullivan) whose sarcasm, hostility, and anger cannot defeat his kindness and caring, and the growing intimacy between John and Jess as she bathes him in the shower and they let down their guard. That John Abraham actually has cerebral palsy and Katy Sullivan is a multiple amputee is not stunt casting; they are both outstanding actors giving indelible, moving performances in an unforgettable production, directed with great sensitivity by Jo Bonney.

An In-Depth Look At The Hottest Area Artists

Two Times A Tribute:

Who: Petty Rumours ranks as one of the most unique tribute music acts in Long Island, as it pays homage to not one but two legendary performers: Fleetwood Mac lead singer Stevie Nicks as well as Tom Petty, who has led his Heartbreakers to become a classic rock staple. Members of Petty Rumours include Tommy Gorman on drums, Ed Ryan on vocals and guitar, Mike Breier on vocals and bass, Diane-Noel Gorman on vocals and keyboards, and Chris Seidl on lead guitar and vocals. The Artists & Their Sound: From their bio: “So Why Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks? The answer comes from Stevie Nicks herself, "If Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers had said 'leave Fleetwood Mac and come and join us,' I probably would have." Nicks approached Petty in 1976 and asked him to write a song for her. That event led to a nearly 40-year friendship and an on-and-off collaboration. That led this band to connect-the-dots and create Petty Rumours.

“One day, during a discussion about adding a few Petty tunes to their cover band's repertoire, Chris Seidl, Diane Gormman, and Tommy Gorman decided to form a Tom Petty tribute act. Shortly after this decision, ‘Stop Dragging My Heart Around’ was heard on the radio, and within minutes, Petty Rumours was born. The wealth of amazing songs from these multiple award-winning artists, along with their solo and side projects, make for an evening of unforgettable music. The show brings together over four decades of chart-topping material from Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks, Fleetwood Mac, and even The Traveling Wilburys. With combined sales of these artists easily topping 200 million albums, the selection of great music is so vast that the band can change-up their set list, draw two audiences, and keep the show interesting and entertaining. All of the music has been studied and rehersed for a full energy show with a high standard of musicianship.” To Learn More About Or Contact The Artists: Check out the band’s amazingly creative website at petty-rumours.com, or find them on Twitter: @PettyRumours. The band will perform at K.J. Farrell’s in Bellmore on September 29, October 27, November 25, and December 29. 22 • Good Times Magazine - September 5 - 18, 2017

Of Hits New & Old: I think I actually need to title this column When Top 40 Meant Something. Those of us who've been around for a while – preInternet, naturally – remember when a Top 40 radio countdown (especially here in New York, the Tuesday night Top 20 countdown show on WABC-AM 770 with “Cousin” Brucie) was life itself. The countdown, we were told, was based on sales and requests (how one got requests to WABCAM remains a mystery to me because, by 1965, there were no

request lines since the station was too big, too popular, to accommodate such a system). Regardless, record stores were polled, sales were compiled, and the most popular tunes were played, repeatedly, morning noon and night, with that week's top four in the heaviest repeat rotation. While The Beatles, The Supremes, The Beach Boys and The Rolling Stones were the big attractions, you could hear Johnny Cash, Frank Sinatra, or Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass in the mix – as long as they had a huge hit, they were played, and the kids got turned on to various styles music as a result. We were voting for the hits by purchasing vinyl singles … 45s – you know, the little records with the big holes in the center. There were certain records that didn't get played because of offensive subject matter. I remember "They're Coming To Take Me Away, Ha, Haaa!" by Napoleon XIV getting pulled off the radio when it was #1 in sales because it insulted people with mental issues. Years later came

the politically charged "Ohio" by Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young ("Tin soldiers and Nixon coming") and The Beatles' "The Ballad Of John & Yoko" ("Christ, you know it ain't easy/they're gonna crucify me") – both Top 10 hits, both removed for offensiveness to certain audiences. Chuck Berry's "My Ding-ALing" was removed from the airwaves on WABC after only one day of airplay, while it was the #1 single in New York, no less. Lou Reed's huge single "Walk On The Wild Side" was considered too wild for airplay, and glam era David Bowie was considered too gay for airplay; "Space Oddity" was forced onto WABC for just two weeks by Cherry Vanilla (then a MainMan publicist) before vanishing. Top 40 had become selective, and ultra conservative. It was no longer all the hits, only the ones considered to be “agreeable.” Perhaps because FM rock radio took away some listeners starting at the end of the 1960s, Top 40 radio (in New York, anyway) began to retreat to a world of John Denver, Helen Reddy, and eventually, because KTU-FM scored a direct hit, disco. Rock records (and topical records) were no longer in the running for a spot on the playlist, and Top 40 lost its edge until Scott Shannon brought it back with Z100 in the 1980s. Next, hip hop scored the same type of impact as disco had done, and Top 40 again retreated away David from rock Bowie and topical records to the same, safe wallpaper music of the Denver/Reddy era, only now featuring solo female vocalists and pop kids, with an occasional hip hop or country-sounding tune. By not representing everything out there, “Hit Radio” is not really what it claims to be, and the result is a sometimes fun but watered down music scene. Now get back to school.

Steve Earle, Los Lobos:

A Dream Double Bill At The Paramount Austin, Texas. Earle has lived in New York City for the past decade, but acknowledged: “Look, I’m always gonna be a Texan, no matter what I do. And I’m always going to be somebody who learned their craft in Nashville. It’s who I am.”

Los Lobos

Obviously, the new release is an homage to outlaw music. “I was out to unapologetically ‘channel’ Waylon (Jennings) as best as I could.” said Earle. “This record was all about me on the back pick-up of a Fender Telecaster on an entire record for the first time in my life. The singing part of it is a little different. I certainly don’t sound like Waylon Jennings.” The constantly touring Los Lobos – David Hidalgo, Louie Perez, Cesar Rosas, Conrad Lozano, and Steve Berlin – keep recording as well, as their 2015 album, Gates Of Gold, ranks as one of the biggest hits

they’ve ever scored. Of the album, Berlin noted, the band is “trying not to do stuff we’ve already done.” Lobos has been an area draw for years.
