Hot Dogs (& Stars): Broadway Barks Is Back

This is one of the most talked-about area art events that we can recall: A collection of artworks and sculpture by the worldrenowned artist Romero Britto will be on exhibition and available for acquisition this summer at LaMantia Gallery in Northport. The exhibition previews July 15, and opens to the public on Saturday, July 22 with a series of live artist appearances by Britto. The gallery will host public exhibitions on Saturday, July 22 from 6 to 8 pm, and Sunday, July 23 from 2 to 4 pm. RSVP required: (631) 754-8414 or info@lamantiagallery.com. Noted in his native country, Britto was encouraged to travel to the United States, where pop art was flourishing.

Hot Summer: Free Sunscreen In Town Of Hempstead

There's no need to fear the hot sun at facilities in The Town Of Hempstead this summer: It's partnering with South Nassau Communities Hospital to station 25 free sunscreen dispensers at all town beaches and pools. Beginning this summer, Hempstead Town will provide 25 free sunscreen dispensers filled with Miami Beach Suncare SPF 30 Triple Action Sea Kelp Sunscreen Lotion. The sunscreen is being made available through a $25,000 grant from South Nassau Communities Hospital to Hempstead Town. “How many times do you arrive at the beach or local pool only to find out that the pesky sunscreen lotion was left at home?” said town supervisor Anthony J. Santino. “It’s not worth taking the risk of spending an entire day in the sun without protection, that is why we’re making sure our residents stay covered this summer.”

Dubbed by the media as “The American Led Zeppelin,” Get The Led Out offers a strong focus on the early years. They also touch on the deeper cuts that were seldom, if ever, heard in concert

The Mets also have a first base prospect waiting in the wings, as Dominic Smith has been hitting well for The Las Vegas 51s, the Mets’ top farm team. Bruce has been one of the few upbeat stories in Metsville, but it’s easy to surmise that Alderson believes that outfielders who are less than Hall of Fame candidates are eminently replaceable if the right prospects are offered in a trade. Alderson would make a major mistake if he lets Walker walk at the end of the season, or trades him in July; Walker likes playing in New York and would love to stay here. He has proven that he can thrive here, which was a major question when he arrived, since he grew up in Pittsburgh and played the first seven years of his MLB career for his hometown team, the Pirates. Yes, he was recently on the disabled list (you aren’t a real Met unless you have been on it) for an inflamed left knee, and was lost to the team again after June hamstring injury. Yet, Walker is a leader in the clubhouse and a go-to guy for reporters. Over the course of a 162-game season, this is crucial for a team, and he has nicely assumed the David Wright role. Walker enjoys talking with reporters, and makes time to say hello to them by name and talk about things other than baseball. That certainly doesn’t happen with Matt Harvey or Noah Syndergaard. The Belmont Stakes should have been called The Belmont Fakes because it did not

feature Always Dreaming or Cloud Computing, who won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. The race also didn’t run Classic Empire, a highly regarded thoroughbred who ran in the previous two legs of the Triple Crown stakes, nor Epicharus, a horse from Japan who was generating a lot of buzz, as both horses were scratched. The connections of the winning horse, Tapwrit, were presented with ritzy Longines watches from the company, a Belmont Stakes sponsor. Given the paltry level of competition, they should have received Timex drug store watches.

By Richard Branciforte THE BOUNTIFUL GOURMET Willie Degel’s Steak & Organic Empire Is Sizzling If you have ever wanted to meet a “serial entrepreneur,” your trip can end as close by as Glen Head in Nassau County or Bayside in Queens: You can meet up with one of Long Island's leading restaurateurs, who is currently juggling many balls in building his dining empire. His name is Willie Degel, and for those of you food faddies out there, you may recognize him as the booming presence in “Restaurant Stakeout,” The Food Network series that features Willie trying to rescue floundering restaurants that need either marketing savvy, or more likely, a complete makeover of their modus operandi. Willie is well qualified to take on the role of restaurant consultant, having strung together an empire of many different types of restaurants. A Queens boy who made good, Willie opened his first operation in 1990, a local joint known as Hollywood And Main. This was just the beginning. In 1996, Willie opened Uncle Jack's Steakhouse in Bayside, a throwback to the glory days of steakhouses. Willie had stiff competition; New York is known for its high profile steak places, but the attention to detail, service, and especially the food quality made Uncle Jack's a huge success. City types made the reverse journey to Bayside to sample his exotic selections of quality beef, and he was off and running. The Uncle Jack's empire mushroomed into three

locations with Willie opening two locations in the lions' den: Manhattan. The steak business flourished, and Willie was on the move. Since 2010, Long Island has become a paradise for burger lovers, with fancy restaurant owners falling all over themselves to open high-end quality burger joints. Famous chefs and nightclub owners have all joined the parade, and it seems like there's a craft burger joint on every corner. Sensing once again an opening in the market, Willie came up with the concept of Jack's Shack Organic Eatery in Glen Head, close to Willie his Long Island home. Degal He took it way beyond just burgers, however, concentrating on a high-quality menu at reasonable prices that includes burgers, sandwiches, salads, tacos, quesadillas, and more, all made with quality organic ingredients. Whereas most eateries fill their walls with posters or collectibles, Jack's Shack features their sourced ingredients on rich-looking signs. And everything is sourced: The oil in the fryer is an organic rice brand; there are several varieties of ketchup, Heinz -based, including Cowboy and Buffalo

flavor. The very impressive burgers are an all-natural blend of chuck, short rib; and brisket; our favorite is The Glen Head, which is an eight-ounce burger with beef, pulled pork, applewood bacon, fried onions, cheddar cheese, and barbecue sauce. It’s big and juicy,

and fine tasting, indeed. Jack's features nearly a dozen different kinds of sandwiches and as well as wraps, salads, and plenty of interesting sides, such as turkey chili. The attention to detail is impressive. While lunching one afternoon with Willie, it was interesting to see him approach his customers and ask their opinions on what they ordered. The details are there with every item; I was even impressed by the soda selection. Foregoing the typical Coke/Pepsi hookup, Willie has stocked up on the

highly regarded Boylan soda, including a very tasty diet root beer. Willie laughed as he remembered how he got the job as host of “Restaurant Stakeout.” Someone entered him as an answer to an ad on Craig's List for a “tough bar owner.” He parlayed that into several years as host, with each episode taking five days to film. His notoriety has helped, but it's Willie's pursuit of the next big idea that seems to be his driving force. Plans include opening a new meeting place in the hot Astoria area, and the next Jack's Shack would most likely be in the highly dense Forest Hills area. Glen Head is an opportunity for Willie to develop the Jack's Shack brand before rolling it out to other areas. It also gives him an opportunity to be close to his family, an important part of his personae. There iss plenty to choose from: Mondays are $5 burgers all day (two minimum), there's Quesadilla Thursdays, and don't forget Wiener Wednesday, two for $5 – an don't miss the organic fresh pressed juices. Pop over to Jack's Shack and say hi to Willie, and tell him you're on a healthy eating mission. Trust us: He'll have the tasty solution. Jack's Shack is located at 671A Glen Cove Avenue in Glen Head; contact the restaurant at (516) 676-7001.

Festival in Todd Mission, Texas, and it was what dreams are made of. Between the stage design, incredible lineup, and impeccable production value of the event, it was easily one of the best festivals yet. It says something when a music festival can immerse you into a completely different environment. From the turkey legs, to the fairies and royalty, to the simple medieval environment, everything was perfect. Unfortunately, because of noise complaints, the festival will not be able to return to The Texas Renaissance Fairgrounds. Insomniac, who put the fest together, is looking for a new location, and will hopefully find somewhere just as incredible. More big event news: Excision has released dates, the location, and the lineup for his Lost Lands Festival, a camping festival in Thornville, Ohio from September 28 through October 1. The lineup is exactly what you would expect: bone crushing and bass heavy, featuring a mix of all the top names in the bass and dubstep game – and, as you might have guessed based on all the T-Rex

Taking a turn from the grooviness mentioned above, we now step into the deep, dark realm of “future techno” – well, that’s how some people try to classify it. However, this woman is in a league of her own: Rezz has somewhat popularized this “genre,” though I wouldn’t call it that. I like to think of it as hypnotic dubstep, but even summation that doesn’t quite feel right. The truly wub-filled sounds, mixed with all sorts of things you might hear in the night, is a refreshing, unique experience. Raising A Stein: Hammond USA has announced that Vanilla Fudge lead vocalist, keyboardist, and founding member Mark Stein was the first official artist to use its revolutionary new Hammond XK-5 Heritage Pro System Organ and Leslie 3300W speaker during a recording session. Hammond has just launched the proprietary, patent pending, multi-contact keyboard, which is analogous to vintage Hammonds. “It is a great honor to be the first authorized Hammond artist to be using the new XK-5 on my new solo tracks,” said Stein, who, while still spearheading the legendary Vanilla Fudge, is taking time to finish a new solo album. “Mark has always been on the vanguard, and we are thrilled he has chosen the XK-5 to push his envelope even further,” said Hammond's Scotty May. “We can’t wait to hear what magic he makes with it.” The multi-contact keyboard allows organists the “feel” of a vintage instrument in a modern

Flm diirector (and Long Island native) Fred Carpenter’s new work, Just Like Joe, will screen as part of the 20th annual Long Island International Film Expo (LIIFE) on Monday, July 10 at 7:30 pm at The Bellmore Movies, followed by a “Q&A” with the writer and director. “Of the 23 movies I’ve done, ‘Just Like Joe’ is by far my favorite,” said Carpenter. “A moving story that touches the heart, it captures these teens playing in the shadow of the Vietnam War. Their worship of Joe Namath was their escape, as he was more popular than The Beatles or even the astronauts landing on the moon at that time in history.” The film is a coming-of-age story set in 1969; it follows the lives of three 17-year-old high school football players bonded by friendship and their compelling need to find their place in a rapidly changing world. For more information about LIIFE's 2017 programs and presentations and a complete film festival schedule, visit LongIslandFilmExpo.com. Wire Dolls live, Lemmy took them under his supportive wing. Ever since his early days hanging with the likes of Sid Vicious and other icons, Kilmister loved punk rock, having even once penned a track entitled “R.A.M.O.N.E.S.” about his friend Joey Ramone. Disgusted with the current state of rock music and its lack of true rebels, Lemmy saw that the Dolls were the obvious choice to help carry the torch of rock & roll as part of his label, Motörhead Music. Barb Wire Dolls’ sophomore album Desperate was produced and mixed by

Grammy award-winning producer Jay Baumgardner and mastered by Howie Weinberg. The 10-song album contains rock tracks, anthems, and hard-edged thrashers, all performed with the classic punk rock energy the band has become internationally known for. As members of Motörhead Music, Barb Wire Dolls are represented by Lemmy’s longtime manager Todd Singerman, Motörhead's booking agents, and parent label UDR/Warner Music Group. Who: A relatively new name on the Long Island scene, Misty Mountain, bills itself as “The Zep Experience,” and it’s not hard to see (and hear) why: This quartet of seasoned veteran musicians – Ed Terry, Elliot Negrin, Alan Levy, and Shawn Murray – has drawn raves for its accurate and powerful recreations of the sounds of Led Zeppelin. They’re not hard to find – Misty Mountain (named after the classic song “Misty Mountain Hop” from Led Zeppelin IV) will headline at one of the area’s top music venues on Thurday, July 6 at 7 pm at K.J. Farrell’s in Bellmore (information: (516) 804-9925). The Artists & Their Sound: From their official bio: “A new band, Misty Mountain, has emerged on the scene as a rocking tribute band blasting the songs of Led Zeppelin across Long Island. With guitar licks reminiscent of Jimmy Page and howling vocals that bring back memories of Robert Plant, the band transports audiences back to the days of power rock & roll. “The band started to come together in 2012 when lead guitarist Elliot Negrin and lead singer Ed Terry met on the local scene performing together in different projects. Both had a long love affair with the Led Zeppelin sound and started to put together a band ready to pay tribute to the rock legends. As the pair started to explore possibilities, they realized a seed had sprung and a group was needed to blast the power of Led Zeppelin’s music. “The band was complete with the addition of Shawn Murray on drums and Alan Levy on bass. The four accomplished musicians of Misty Mountain started blending and developed a sound eerily similar to Led Zeppelin’s performances. “The members of Misty Mountain have presented their tribute performances in local locations including Salt, The Savoy, Tropix, and major festivals for municipalities on the Island.” To Learn More Or Contact The Artists: Log on to their official website, mistymountainrocks.com, or find them on Facebook at Facebook.com/mistymountainzepexperience. Upcoming major appearances for Misty Mountain: They’re headlining on July 14 as part of the Glen Cove Downtown Sounds series, and will perform on August 10 at 6 pm in Cedar Beach. Hart Of The Scene: It's funny how the circle continues to wind around. In 1977 and 1978, when I was making media noise with The Psychotic Frogs via the notorious Death To Disco vsingle, Rolling Stone added to the noise by writing about it in its “Random Notes” column. Kurt Loder, an editor at Good Times during punk, also touted us here; I, of course,

always kept the light on for NYC's first-ever underground nightclub, Max's Kansas City, and cutting edge artists such as Wayne (now Jayne) County and Cherry Vanilla. You never know who is reading your words, but one kid surely did: Ron Hart, who just wrote about County, Vanilla, Max's, and me in Rolling Stone's online edition in a great feature called "When Punk Met Glam At Max's Kansas City." He called to tell me that he read me regularly in these pages, and jumped at the chance to share these stories. Just amazing. The Max's Festival: While Hart's feature centered on the newly re-issued, expanded edition of the first various artists album to emerge from the NYC scene, Max's Kansas City 1976, there was an actual three-day festival at Bowery Electric celebrating the survivors of Max's Kansas City.

The spectacular Luigi & The Wiseguys stole the show with a tight dynamic set. Names from the early ’70s showed up, notably Ruby & The Rednecks, The Stillettos, The Magic Tramps, and The Brats, to name a few. Current scene stars Sean (Jones Crusher) Sanders, Jay (Loose Lips) Bennz, and Gino Scalmato comprised a 2017 version of The Psychotic Frogs for me to play off of, and former Heartbreakers star Walter Lure led The Waldos through an LAMF-dominated set. As always, it was a super successful Memorial Day weekend, and the Bowery looked more glam than ever since it's been upscaled and reinvented after CBGB closed. Darling diane: While at Bowery Electric, I was slipped a double A-side 7’ single by diane and the gentle men (yes, everything is non-capitalized) with two great ready for radio tunes: "Motorcycle" and "Boyfriend” – and my head exploded. Why aren't these tunes on the radio? Keep your eyes and

ears open for this undiscovered treasure. It never fails to delight me when this sot of thing happens, and I'm so glad that there are still venues in NYC where these sort of disc-overies can take place. Vinyl still rules!

Superstar country artist Gretchen Wilson was chosen as NRA Country’s

“Featured Artist” for June. After an almost three-year pause to focus on raising her daughter, Wilson is back with a new single, “Rowdy,” from her new album, as well as a summer tour. “I recently moved from a farm to a neighborhood, so my daughter could study theatre in high school – she’s incredibly talented.” sad Wilson. “I just love being outside. I mow the grass every few days just to have something to do outside. I’m sure I came up with Sara some the song ideas for Diamond my new record in my backyard. I miss riding through the woods on four wheelers and having target practice out in the field, but we do pretty much anything for our kids, don’t we?” As an NRA Country Featured Artist, Gretchen Wilson joins some of country music’s biggest acts including Hank Williams Jr., Florida Georgia Line, Lee Brice, Frankie Ballard, and many more, in teaming up to celebrate their support of the military.

Sara Diamond: Canada’s Gift

Gretchen Wilson

Canadian singer/songwriter Sara Diamond has premiered a video for her song, “Back To You,” the first of a series of singles that she will release this year – all about the good and the ugly of love. “'Back To You is about the battle that goes on between your head and your heart right after a breakup,” said Diamond of the song and video. “You seem to forget all of the reasons why you broke up, and instead only think about the good times, the memories, the love that initially brought you together. Our minds have a powerful way of shielding us from hurt – my mind's way of doing that was by convincing me that I had made a

"Shake It" is the second music video and advance single from Debra Devi's upcoming EP, Wild Little Girl. "Shake It" is the tawdry, tongue-in-cheek tale of a young woman convinced by her boyfriend to become a stripper not only to support his music-making habit, but also to become more attractive in his eyes. "You need a little glamour," he tells her, "if you wanna be my girl." "Shake It" is a commentary on the relentless pressure on women to support their male partners’ dreams at the expense of their own, and to

conform to conventional ideals of sexiness and beauty. The new EP will be released with a bonus live track on September 8. Devi, based in New Jersey, is considered one of the best of the new breed of guitarists, and has authored a bestselling book on blues stars. Learn more at debradevi.com.

Space at Westbury Theater. The tour will support Shepherd's new album, Lay It Own Down, slated to be released on August 4 on Concord Records. The title track is something that fans of the fleet-fingered guitarist might not expect: a gentle, passionate tune. “It’s, like, a midtempo ballad, which surprises some people, but I love ballads,” explained Shepherd. “I grew up in the era of the power ballad. That was the biggest thing on the radio when I was a teenager, those rock & roll ballads. So I’m a sucker for a good ballad, and wanted to have one on this record.” Shepherd’s band on Lay It On Down also features his longtime lead vocalist Noah Hunt, bassist Kevin McCormick, and keyboardist Jimmy McGorman. “I’m proud of the album we have delivered to the fans and I think they'll be excited by what they hear,” notes Shepherd. “The band we’ve assembled did a fantastic job bringing these songs to life and conveying the musical message to the listener. Now we are looking forward to bringing this new music to the live show to watch it develop even more.”
