FILM Wonder Woman

Preview by Cody Bell

Staring Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, Danny Huston Directed by Patty Jenkins Warner Bros. Pictures Opens June 2 She was the best thing about the Batman Vs Superman: Dawn Of Justice film last year; she looks exactly like we all always thought Wonder Woman should look; she's not yet a major film star, but she's about to be – the casting of Gal Gadot, the 32-year-old former model previously best known for roles in The Fast & The Furious series, as Princess Diana may be the most perfect actress for the most perfect role in years. Gadot, despite her obvious beauty, is also genuinely tough: She served in the Israeli military, and she's also been an Israel Defense Forces soldier. And holy DC, has she got fans: Her brief appearance in the Batman Vs Superman film drew the best audience response about the film according to multiple reviews and audience polls. Now, Gadot stars in this film, and in this preview, we can't tell you all that much about it; DC and Warner Brothers have been tight-lipped about this new release, as they're banking on it to become one of the biggest blockbusters of the summer. Certainly, this new superhero film is going to have a lot of competition during the coming months for

filmgoers' dollars; also on the boards for the coming weeks and months are such notables (we've already seen The Fate Of The Furious and Guardians Of The Galaxy Part 2 do betterthan-expected tallies) as newest version of The Mummy, another run with Transformers: The Last Knight, Marvel's Spider-Man: Homecoming; War For The Planet Of The Apes; the Cara Delvigne sleeper Valerian & The City Of A Thousand Planets; Steven King's The Dark Tower; and more family and action films.

However, the key to Wonder Woman will be simple: Avoid the darkness and mock solemnity of the Batman/Superman film and you've got a hit on your hands. Advance word is good, thanks in no small part that DC honchos Jon Berg and Geoff Johns are promising a good, old-fashioned superhero thrill ride. But, again: The big factor here will be Gadot; smart, funny, and obviiously in perfect shape, she's what every comic geek female wants to be, and who every comic geek boy wants to meet. Jackpot.

The return of The San Francisco Giants to Citi Field to take on The New York Mets in a rematch of last October’s wild card game generated little buzz. Giants second baseman and St. John’s University alum Joe Panik

SportsBeat With Lloyd Carroll

pointed out that both starting pitchers from that game, Madison Bumgarner and Noah Syndergaard, were on the disabled list, and that took some luster off of the moment; he also noted that both teams were struggling. Matt Of course, the real reason Harvey why the Giants-Mets series storyline was overlooked was because Mets pitcher Matt Harvey had been suspended by the team for three games for a violation of team policy. What I found most interesting about the Harvey hullabaloo was that many of his teammates had no compunction about criticizing him without waiting to hear his account. Harvey’s aloofness and unfriendliness apparently extend past his relations with the media. Nonetheless, Harvey did deserve a chance to defend himself. He

Summer's Here: LIGBT Action Yes, most league bowling seasons start in the fall and run through spring – but if you've got the bowling bug, be sure to check with your area house and ask about summer league action, usually available in any format you'd like: USBC sanctioned leagues, unsanctioned fun leagues, sport shot leagues, you name it. LIGBT Summer Schedule: The Long Island Generations Bowling Tour (LIGBT) recently began its summer schedule of summer handicap tournaments. While the Giants were in town, I asked outfielder (as well as one of baseball’s great personalities) Hunter Pence, if he ever crossed paths with Vice President Mike Pence. “No, I haven’t. Actually I am not very political,” he said. Hunter’s grimace indicated that he wasn’t a fan of the Trump administration. The annual Sports Emmy Awards are always an enjoyable gathering of on-air talents and executives. It’s also been a great place to get insider information from decision makers and boldface names, who drop their guard a bit because of the upbeat atmosphere. An ESPN official privately admitted to me that the company wanted to wait until after its Upfront presentation to advertisers in mid-May before it laid off 100 air personalities, but the leaks were springing up and its employees were on edge.

Jimmy Rollins

Michael Strahan’s career, which has a big non-sports component. A good example was “A-Rod”’s surprise appearance as a co-host on a recent episode of “The View.” “My mom and my sister love that show. It’s not everyday that they ask ugly guys like me from the sports world to come on,” he said with self-deprecating humor. “I had a great time, but I have to admit that I got nervous and tried to stay clear of all political discussions.” Former MLB shortstop Jimmy Rollins is

another recently retired ballplayer who is now working in the media, as he is now an analyst for Turner Sports. The always candid Rollins admitted that he would put on the uniform again in a heartbeat if an MLB team came calling. Recently retired Brent Musburger received a Lifetime Achievement Emmy. It’s safe to say that Musburger and his colleagues at the time, Phyllis George, Irv Cross, and Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder, put NFL pregame, halftime, and postgame shows on the map when they were the “NFL Today” team on CBS. “People ask me about that show every day,” said Musburger. “The key to our success was Phyllis George, who was a recent Miss America. She brought a huge female following to the show, and she could handle herself with the guys.” NBC hockey voice Mike “Doc” Emrick won the Emmy for best play-by-play broadcaster for the third straight year. When asked about the possibility of an Edmonton Oilers-Ottawa Senators Stanley Cup, Emrick waxed poetic about the 2006 meeting of two-small market teams, The Carolina Hurricanes and The Edmonton Oilers: “It was a wonderful Stanley Cup final,” he said. What he didn’t say was that a test pattern would have drawn higher TV ratings. At the time that Emrick was getting his Emmy at The Frederick P. Rose Hall, The New York Rangers were down 2-0 to The Ottawa Senators at Madison Square Garden and were facing likely playoff elimination. I joked to Emrick that NBC Sports CEO Mark Lazarus

was probably on the ledge of the roof of the Time Warner Center. Doc was clearly uncomfortable discussing the business side of sports broadcasting, but did crack a smile. Former Atlanta Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez is moving from CBS’s NFL pregame show to Fox. ESPN re-signed Tim Tebow for its college football telecast,s but a press release emphasized that he was still free to pursue his baseball career – you can breathe easy, Mets fans. Charles Barkley stepped out of his comfort zone recently with his four-part miniseries on TBS called “American Race,” which delved with the Doc uncomfortEmrick able topic of prejudice. Generating buzz was his interview with white supremacist Richard Spencer. Barkley maintained his cool; if he hadn’t, it all would have descended into Morton Downey, Jr. territory.

'Who's' Gone: More than a few Major League Baseball fans around the country were saddened to find that the annually published digest-sized magazine, Who's Who In Baseball, was not released this year and apparently is no more. For decades, fans found the career statistics of most current MLB players in this handy little book, but the magazine, sadly, seems to now be yet another victim of the digital information age; just type in a name in a Google search and websites such as Baseball Reference can give you statistics in seconds. However, the magazine continued to enjoy a loyal following, at least amongst fans we knew in the Long Island area, who this year won't be able to thumb through the black-and-white stock paper to find out what Buster Posey's batting average was in 2014 – it may sound trite, but it truly is the end of a sports magazine era. At the end of its run, WWIB was published by Harris Publications, which announced at the end of April was closing its doors; other Harris titles included Celebrity Hairstyles, Guns & Weapons, and Naturally, among other imprints ... The legendary Pamela Anderson may not be in the main cast, but reports claim that wall and theater posters for the new film version of Baywatch are being seeked out by young fans. It's certainly quite the pleasant-looking cast, which includes Zac Efron, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Kelly Rohrbach, and Alexandra Daddario … Speaking of Rohrbach, she's on the cover of the current Cosmopolitan Magazine, which finds itself in the news for an odd reason: If you've listened to AM radio of late, you might have heard quite the unusual ad: The voice of Victoria Hearst, the granddaughter of publisher William Randolph Hearst, who claims that the long-running women's magazine “contains pornography” and should be regulated to an extent. On her cosmohurtskids.com website, Hearst writes that she's not trying to put the magazine that her family publishes out of business: “The goal is to have Cosmo labeled 'Adult Material' so that it cannot be sold to anyone under 18 years of age.” Victoria Hearst has conducted this informational campaign for more than two years; she's been involved in various ministries for more than 16 years ... Surf-loving Brook Power is the 2017 Playboy Playmate Of The Year; she graces the cover of the current issue.

The ’60s Invasion At Resorts World Casino

Resorts World (Jamaica): Resorts World Casino New York City generated $361,643,895 in revenue for New York’s Lottery education fund in 2016/2017, according to the latest Lottery year-end review. The revenue generated by the Queens casino was more than any other video gaming facility in the state, and more than any of the Lottery’s jackpot games. Since opening in 2011, Resorts World Casino New York City has generated more than $1.8 billion for the education fund, to which it gives approximately 44 percent of its earnings. “Resorts World is proud to support New York’s public education system and is committed to continuing to help provide students with a high-quality public education,” said Scott Molina, President of Resorts World Casino New York City. “Our partnership with the state has been extremely beneficial for New Yorkers both in terms of education aid and economic development, and we look forward to an even brighter future.” One way that Resorts World raises all those dollars is by offering entertainment – and here's who's on the boards for the coming weeks: Area bands are front and center, with performances by the Cars tribute Drive on June 7; the rocking '60s Invasion on June 8; and Uppercut on June 15. Learn more by calling (888) 888-8801. Tropicana (AC): Soul icon Patti LaBelle is known for belting out classic rhythm and blues renditions, pop standards, and spiritual sonnets. The musical legend (and sweet potato pie expert) will bring her soulful voice to the Tropicana's Showroom for a live performance on June 24 at 8 pm. For more than 50 years, LaBelle's strong, expressive voice has left an The Who At indelible mark all over the world. This Mohegan Sun Philadelphia-born entertainer captured her first hit in 1962, as lead singer of Patti LaBelle and The BlueBelles. Later with her group LaBelle and as a solo artist, she went on to release numerous hit songs and albums and capture worldwide acclaim. Tickets to see Patti LaBelle at Tropicana Atlantic City are priced from $55 to $125 and are subject to tax and fees. Tickets are available at the Tropicana box office or Ticketmaster; for more info: (609) 340-4000. Mohegan Sun (CT): Burton Cummings, formerly of The Guess Who, recently wowed the crowd at this popular destination spot – and now, it's been announced that the even more legendary British group with the similar name, The Who, are hitting the road this summer and will be making their way to Connecticut for a live performance at Mohegan Sun Arena on Thursday, July 20 at 8 pm. Tickets are now on sale; info and tickets are at (800) 745-300. Fans can expect the band, fronted by Roger Daltrey and Pete Townsend, to take them on a journey through their entire career from the days of The High Numbers to classic albums such as Who’s Next, Tommy, Quadrophenia, My Generaton, and Live At Leeds up to the present day. The Patchogue Arts Council has announcesd “The Summer Of Love 1967-2017,” which it describes as a “phantasmagorical arts festival” for all ages honoring the 50th anniversary of the “Summer of Love” movement. Events will run throughout Patchogue through August 17, and are free and open to the public. In 1967, a convergence of cultural significance occurred in San Francisco when more 100,000 hippies and flower children gathered in Haight-Ashbury. This idealistic counter-cultural movement embraced the themes of peace, love, psychedelia, and Zen philosophy. The Patchogue Arts Council will celebrate the 50th anniversary of this movement with a series of exhibits, performances, and events inspired by and reflective of the music and art of that time. Upcoming events include; on June 4: “Arts On Terry Street Artists' Fair”; a “Summer of Love” exhibit at PAC Gallery through June 24; “You Spin Me Round,” featuring new works by Ratgrrl at the Long Hall Gallery at Toast Coffee house through August 30; and more exhibits and attractions.

22 • Good Times Magazine - May 30 - June 2, 2017

Last year was simply overwhelming because of the parade of names of those who passed away, and it seems as if it's never going to stop. As I began to write these words, there had been no conclusive findings on the cause of death of 52year-old Chris Cornell, the front man for Soundgarden and Audioslave, but the Internet was full of speculation since Cornell ran in the same circles as Nirvana and the full slew of West Coast grunge bands who left a trail of gone-too-soon casualties in their way. Without tying this in to Cornell, all I will say is that seriously fatal Cherry drugs like heroin are not a fad or trendy; there is noth- Vanilla ing cool about them. As I wrapped this up, it was reported that Cornell's death was ruled suicide by hanging. I don't even know what to write ... Ziggy's Zeal: David Bowie knew his death was imminent; his final album, Blackstar, was centered on that very subject. It was rather unsettling to see and hear him perform his own obit in videos issued when that album was released. Rock stars of eras gone by were bound and bonded with their fans in a way that now seems unavailable, because social media has taken us to a different place. There are numerous Bowie books that line bookshelves now, but only recently I realized that the holy grail from the Ziggy/MainMan era has never seen the light of day in English. The publisher Hachette in France released

Les Papiers de Ziggy Stardust more than a decade ago in French, comprised of the collected diary entries that appeared in the European fan magazine Mirabella in the 1973-1975 days of Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Pin Ups, and Diamond Dogs. It's an incredible timeline of Bowie's journey from country to country, who he met, what he wore, his interactions with other rockers, recollections of his young son Zowie, and more. It seems incredible that this is not on the racks alongside Bowie books that were written by people who weren't even born in 1974. Bowie didn't even write those diaries; they were ghostwritten by his sidekick and publicity lady Cherry Vanilla, who played a major role in helping Bowie become a star in America. When Hachette released the book in France, Bowie wrote the foreword, raving about Vanilla and admitting that he couldn't remember which of the entries were more Cherry than David, and vice versa; he said it all melded together, yet gave the release his blessings, so I'm taking it upon myself to seeing that this book gets its overdue and well-deserved U.S. release. Stay tuned.

Paramore

They ‘Told You So’

Fueled By Ramen superstars Paramore have unleashed the latest track from their just-released fifth studio album, After Laughter, in “Told You So,” now available at all digital music services and joined by a colorful companion video, directed by Aaron Joseph and Paramore’s own Zac Farro. The clip can be viewed via Fueled By Ramen’s official YouTube channel. The new album is the band's first in more than four years. The official “Hard Times” companion video earned more than 18 million individual views at YouTube alone in its first week of release. “Hard Times” also drew ecstatic critical attention, after which the band performed on the red-hot ABC late night series “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on May 17. Hard-rocking veterans Halestorm have unveiled a new video for the song “Dear Daughter” from their latest full-length album, Into The Wild Life. The video can be viewed at YouTube and other online video portals. “I'm hoping that through this song, I can spread the inspiration and empowerment that has been instilled in me,” said Halestorm lead singer Lzzy Hale in a Tumblr post about the video. “Carve your own path, ladies (and little gents too). I'm living proof that nothing in life is impossible.” For more information on the song and video and inspiration behind it, visit halestormrocks.com/deardaughter. The new album is currently rocketing up the Billboard charts.

Ruth B.

Her ‘Safe Haven’

She's new, but she's already an established platinum artist: Canadian singer/ songwriter Ruth B.’s debut album, Safe Haven, is out now on Columbia Records – and it includes the multi-platinum single “Lost Boy” as well as “Superficial Love” and newest single “If This Is Love.” Ruth wrote and composed all 12 tracks on her debut. Earlier this year, Ruth took home a Juno Award (Canada's version of the Grammy Awards) as Breakthrough Artist of the Year.

Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars scored his seventh Billboard Hot 100 #1 with his latest single, “That’s What I Like.” It's a case of lucky sevens: The triumph comes exactly seven years after Bruno scored his first Billboard Hot 100 #1 with “Nothin’ On You.” With seven Hot 100 #1s, Mars is now tied with Elvis Presley, Phil Collins, and Frankie Valli for the most chart-toppers among male solo artists, and is also ranked #1 amongst male artists with the most Hot 100 #1s for this decade, extending his lead

Amber Coffman There’s ‘No Reply’

Singer/songwriter Amber Coffman will release her upcoming debut album, City Of No Reply, on June 2 on Columbia Records. The 11-track album features the singles “All To Myself” and “No Coffee”; a video for her latest single, directed by Zia Anger, mirrors the dark yet humorous undertones of the song with Coffman describing the video as “a bit of a commentary on the ‘American dream,’ which I think informs a lot of our romantic endeavors, and often times in a not-sohealthy or fulfilling way.” The former guitarist/singer for groundbreaking indie band The Dirty Projectors, Coffman wrote and recorded her solo album in Los Angeles. She’s quietly become one of the most intriguing and Ruth B. sought-after vocalists, delivering notable performances with Bjork and David Byrne on separate Dirty Projectors collaborations (“Mount Wittenberg Orca” and “Knotty Pine,” respectively).
