FILM The Fate Of The Furious

By Cody Bell

Starring Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Helen Mirren, Charlize Theron, Scott Eastwood, Lucas Black, Elsa Pataky, Kurt Russell Directed by F. Gary Gray Universal The new, eighth installment of the “Fast & The Furious” action film franchise, The Fate Of The Furious, now actually ranks as one of the biggest hit films of all time, likely as Michael Keaton probably stared at Box Office Mojo and couldn't figure how why nobody cared to step into a theater to see his truly great new film, The Founder. This new action film debuted on April 14, and by the following Monday morning it had amassed an incredible $532 million in ticket sales worldwide. That made this an even bigger first-weekend hit than anything that's ever come before it, even Star Wars and Harry Potter blockbusters. Not that this is any sort of classic movie – but Universal Pictures displayed actual movie world savvy in every possible aspect of its release, ensuring that this latest edition of muscle care, babes, brawn, and big booms would be box office boffo. Here's how they did it: • There is so much youth culture appeal to the F&F series that it was imperative to bring

2 • Good Times Magazine - May 2 - 15, 2017

back all the series' stars, and Universal did just that; from “The Rock” to Tyrese, all the favorites are here. A ubiquitous Dodge TV commercial featuring Ludacris only heightened awareness. Mix in more star power in Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren and it helped bring older viewers into mallplexes as much as teens. • Realizing the early F& F films were unexpected hits around Easter, Universal once again released this latest epic at that same time – long before the summer blockbusters, but taking advantage of the usual weak array of competition this time of year. Boss Baby?

Going In Style? Long-in-the-tooth Beauty & The Beast? Genius. • Universal put everything it could behind this film, opening it in virtually every major market in the world at the same time. China went bonkers for this film, making more money there than it did even in the US during its opening weekend. Our take: It’s the usual mindless array of car stunts, testosterone, and sexy stars; somewhere, Andy Sidaris is saying “I told you so.” If you took your kids to see this the weekend after Power Rangers, we have a pretty good idea what's triggering those migraines.

Stephen Stills & Judy Collins

Here Come The Rockers: It may not have felt much like it of late, but warm weather is coming fast – and here comes a wealth of classic rock all over the touring and recording worlds … They were an “item” during the 1960s, and now Stephen Stills and Judy Collins are back together again – on stage, at least. The iconic performers will take part in a limited joint tour this summer; one of the stops is August 26 at The NYCB Theatre At Westbury … Corporate The Legends Keep Rolling 1980s rock returns (and if you know what that term means, you're a real rocker): Toto has announced the first set of dates for their summer U.S. tour, which begins in June. The shows are billed as "An Evening With Toto,” and their performances will feature repertoire from their latest studio album XIV, their AM hits, and more highlights during performances that will stage two hours of music. Last summer, Toto embarked their first U.S. headline run in over a decade. The core Toto members, Steve Lukather, David Paich, Steve Porcaro, and Joseph Williams, will be joined by Lenny Castro (percussion), Shannon Forest (drums), Shem von Schroeck (bass), and Warren Ham (saxophone, vocals). “We had such a great time last Toto summer that we wanted to regroup and hit some cities we didn’t get to last time,” said Lukather. “Always a thrill to bring our full show around the country.” … Still Bad: Bad Company will release deluxe editions of two of their best-selling albums on May 26 on Rhino Records. Double-disc versions of Run With The Pack and Burnin' Sky feature the original albums remastered, and each set is expanded with rare and unreleased recordings included. The albums will be released on CD, vinyl, and Yngwie digitally, as well as on various Malmsteen streaming outlets … Tom Scholz' current version of Boston will welcome Rock & Roll Hall Of Famers Joan Jett & The Blackhearts when they perform on July 23 at the newly renamed Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theatre (formerly Nikon, formerly … ahh, you know) … Swedish guitar legend Yngwie Malmsteen is scheduled to return to New York City as part of his “World On Fire Tour. It’s a rare intimate performance, and the show will take place on May 10 at the historic Gramercy Theatre in lower Manhattan.

spite of his gross incompetence. The Islanders announced after this playoffless season ended that interim head coach Doug Weight would stay on the job. He did a great job taking over in January from Jack Capuano, and led the Islanders to within a whisker of making the playoffs. Weight is a consummate pro, which makes him an outlier in the Islanders organization given its bizarre corporate culture. The only problem with Weight returning is that it probably guarantees that Snow is sticking around, since nearly all general managers want to bring in their own coaches. The management of Barclays Center has made public the fact that it doesn’t want the Islanders as a tenant. Ledecky and his partner, Scott Malkin, are going to have to find a new home for the team, and they don’t seem interested in having the Islanders return to downsized Nassau Coliseum. There has been talk about building an arena in Elmont next to Belmont Park,

but it doesn’t seem feasible. There are already too many venues in the New York area and not enough events to fill them. Ledecky and Malkin won’t get taxpayer help to finance their desires, and politicians aren’t going to assist losing teams that get scant media attention. Huntington native Kenny Atkinson completed his first year as coach of Barclays Center’s main tenants, the Brooklyn Nets. At his year-end press conference, Atkinson admitted that he got a bit down during the first two months of 2017 when his team went 1-27, but was proud of that his players never pointed fingers and their esprit de corps never wavered, even during practices after bad losses. Unlike the New York Knicks, who are in constant chaos under Phil Jackson, Nets GM Sean Marks appears to have a plan and the patience to implement it. Atkinson told me that he was looking forward to meeting team owner Mikhail Prokhorov in Moscow, and will do some sightseeing in Russia. Although his pro career wasn’t stellar, Anderson enjoyed a respectable 14-year run. His life story is now the subject of a documentary film, Mr. Chibbs, now at Manhattan’s IFC Center and soon to hit the

indie theater circuit. The film’s motto, spoken by Anderson himself: “Basketball is easy; life is hard.” Indeed, it’s a cautionary tale as he looks into the camera and talks about having been married three times, having eight kids (many out of wedlock), watching millions of dollars slip away, being molested by a relative as a child, and incurring a DUI charge that hurt his chances of getting a coaching job at any level. In spite of all this, Anderson remains upbeat, and takes responsibility for his actions. It’s somewhat surprising that the new Anderson film did not debut at the recently concluded Tribeca Film Festival, a showcase for sports documentaries for most of its 16 years. While some topics are predictable, such as how social media and the Internet have hurt newspapers, the increasing presence of women in sports journalism, and the growth of sports talk radio, Coutinho does a fine job being a historian along with providing insider stories. Although he is a radio pro, Coutinho, still has a love of print, and closes out his book by detailing his favorite newspaper sports columnists. Gene Casey & The Lone Sharks

Maximum Twang At Treme Photo by Barbara Palumbo

One of the most heralded bands in the history of Suffolk County, Gene Casey & The Lone Sharks bring their roots and rock to Islip on May 6 at 7 pm at Treme. For more information: (631) 277-2008 Gene Casey formed The Lone Sharks after moving to Long Island’s East End in 1988, having received his baptism performing in the New York and New Jersey the waning days of punk and new wave. The Lone Sharks became a mainstay in the late 1990s Hamptons music scene, when bars were plentiful and audiences robust and loyal. Throughout the 1990s and into the new century, Casey and the evolving lineup of Sharks were the house band at The Wild Rose Café in Bridgehampton, where packed houses danced to roots rock and swing. March saw the release of Casey’s latest CD, Guitar In The Rain, an album celebrating the roots of contemporary Americana with original songs that evoke the romantic sweep of 1960s pop, classic C&W, and the raw untamed spirit of early rock & roll. Selections from the album and those preceding it were featured at the band’s recent headlining concert at Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center.

Tickets, priced at $25 ($20 for FMSH members), may be purchased in advance online at fmsh.org, using a credit card, or at the door (cash and checks only). For more information, visit the website or call (631) 425-2925. Cassie and Maggie MacDonald have graced stages across Canada and Europe, and have made forays into the U.S., where they impressed audiences at The Milwaukee Irish Festival and The Philadelphia Folk Festival, among other major events. This concert will mark the duo’s Long Island debut. While still staying true to their Nova Scotia Celtic roots, they have explored and tested the boundaries of traditional music.

There’s little question that the Broadway sensation Jersey Boys has become a true cultural phenomenon – big enough to turn its original cast into superstars in their own right. As such, the touring dynamos The Midtown Men make a dynamic return to The NYCB Theatre at Westbury on Sunday, May 14 at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale now via ticketmaster.com, charge by phone at (800) 745-3000, or at the NYCB Theatre box box office. For more information, visit thetheatreatwestbury.com. Yes, they’ve gone from “boys” to “men”: The Midtown Men reunites stars from the original cast of Broadway’s Jersey Boys, making them the first vocal group ever formed by the principal cast of a high-profile

MIDTOWN MEN

From Jersey ... To Broadway ... To The NYCB Theatre At Westbury Broadway show. After sharing the stage for more than 1,000 performances, Tony Award winner Christian Hoff, Michael Longoria, Daniel Reichard, and Tony Award nominee J. Robert Spencer decided to take their signature sound and chemistry to audiences everywhere, bringing to life their

favorite 1960s pop music hits. On their debut full-length album, available on iTunes, The Midtown Men sing many of those hits from that era, including “Happy Together,” “California Dreamin’,” “Up On The Roof,” “Sherry,” and too many more than we can list here. On their PBS produced follow-up CD & DVD, The Midtown Men Live In Concert, The Midtown Men include concert favorites “Ain’t

No Mountain High Enough,” “December 1963,” and a show-stopping Motown medley, among other popular selections and favorites. One thing to note:The Midtown Men is not a re-creation of the Broadway show these singers were once part of; it is a new, wholly original concert experience featuring the famed vocal quartet performing the greatest hits of pop music. The Beach Boys •

NYCB Theatre At Westbury

This eternal party band played before a full house for two shows on April 2. Fronted by Mike Love, the nine-man ensemble featured longtime band member Bruce Johnston, actor John Stamos, and drummer John Cowsill. Dennis and Carl Wilson appeared in clips on screen, as the band played behind prerecorded vocals. The festivities set sail with “Surfin' Safari,” followed by “It's O.K,” from the band's 1976 “comeback” period. The 38-song set seemed chosen by a prospector, as “Do It Again,” “Little Honda,” “Surfer Girl,” “I Get Around,” “California Girls,” and other hits sent good vibrations over the crowd like a wave of gold dust. Stamos set the female contingent aflutter, helping on guitar and occasional drums, and offered vocals on the Dennis Wilson classic, “Forever.” Cowsill provided impressive support on drums, as Johnston serenaded the “Disney Girls” in attendance from his station at the keyboards. A contingent of Beach Boy draftees rounded out the band, shining like a polished and waxed surfboard. As the waves roll out, it is hoped that The Beach Boys roll back to the shores of Long Island – but wouldn’t it be nice if Brian Wilson and Al Jardine joined Mike Love and Bruce Johnston in Westbury for the next go-round? Hopes are eternal; the more we talk about it, it only makes it worse to live without it.

A Busy Summer For LI’s New-Age Troubadour Who: Long Island’s Bryce Larsen has become one of Long Island’s most in-demand solo singer/songwriters and musicians during the past several years. The acoustic, Americana, and soul artist uses live-looping to combine guitar, vocals, and beat boxing, creating an entirely new take on the term “one man band.” The Artist & His Sound: From his official bio: “The ‘American Idol’ alum is known for the versatility of his repertoire, singing the hits and cult favorites from every era and every genre, in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Bryce makes it a point to create an experience for his audience by constantly conjuring new versions of popular music, linking songs together and building huge looped soundscapes before your eyes that are worthy of a stadium performance. “Bryce’s most recent original release, Here’s To You, is a full-length independently produced album that was funded through a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign that raised more than $24,000. Motown Forever: It should be obvious that Motown has been my obsession since my teen years during the 1960s. The stars built by the label, overseen by Berry Gordy Jr., seemed fantastic and fabulous, and they still do. The documentary due to hit theaters next year already has me itching with anticipation – but as the years go by, more key players pass away at an alarmingly rapid pace. A letter in The Detroit News written by Stevie Wonder brought to my attention to the death of Sylvia Moy, a songwriter who actually saved Wonder when Gordy was about to drop him from the Motownassociated Tamla label. As a teen star, “Little” Stevie Wonder had a huge hit with the instrumental "Fingertips Part 2," which also helped him score a national #1 album on the Billboard Albums chart, a first for Tamla/Motown; that was the good news. The bad news was that as “Little” Stevie grew up, he had no big followup, and by the mid-60s Gordy was

Tara Thompson:

New Star With Pedigree

Initially gaining buzz performing at some of Nashville’s premiere listening rooms and writers’ rounds, Big Machine artist Tara Thompson, a Tennessee native, has embraced her country music heritage while coupling more contemporary sounds. The spunky songstress inked a joint venture songwriting contract with Big Machine Music and Spoon’s Tunes Publishing. Thompson will be performing at fairs and major country events throughout the summer. Learn more at tarathompson.com. A self-described "hillbilly from East Tennessee," Thompson was raised in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, and is the young cousin of one of the genre’s true legends: Loretta Lynn, who last week performed in Long Island. Thompson is currently putting the final touches on her new tracks, and is expected to release her full-length album debut later this year.

Rising star K.Flay recently released her new album, Every Where Is Some Where. The new effort features fan favorites such as “Black Wave,' “High Enough,” and “Blood In The Cut,” plus additional and previously unheard tracks. On the album’s first official single, “High Enough,” K.Flay explores the power of lucid self-acceptance and delivers one of the album’s most upbeat tracks. Talking about the song, K.Flay declares “there are so many songs out there about getting fucked up ... I think a part of me was asking the question: ‘What if I’m already high enough? What if I don’t need anything but what I’ve got?’ There are many moments in my life — whether it’s because of a person or a place — that I don’t want to feel altered or high or buzzed. I just want to feel exactly what I’m feeling.” More: kflay.com.

Best known as an adult film star, blogger and onair talent, Tasha Reign continues to branch out: She launched a weekly radio show, “Through My Rose Colored Lenses,” in November, and is i nterested in broadening the scope of her reach on the airwaves. “On-air broadcasting has been a dream of mine my entire life,” said the performer, who studied the vocation at the arts-focused Robert Louis Stevenson in California. "If we could teach people early on about sex education, consent, communication, and how to take control of one's sexuality to promote healthy

relationships and avoid exploitation, they would have a clearer understanding of – and have less fury against – how women choose to live their sexual lives," said Reign.

Lady Antebellum:

Sixth Time’s The Charm

Country superstars Lady Antebellum will release their sixth studio album, Heart Break, on June 9. This time out, Dave Haywood, Charles Kelley, and Hillary Scott had a new mission: Setting aside time to put themselves in new surroundings, and concentrate on writing and exploring musical endeavors with no distractions. They rented a house in Florida, living and working under the same roof, and when the creative process proved successful, the trio set up a second retreat in southern California. Fans can now pre-order the ACMnominated trio’s upcoming release at ladyantebellum.com. “When we started working on this record, the goal was to give ourselves some space from the day to day,” said Scott. “Surrounding ourselves in a new environment with sunny beaches and warm weather really helped free our minds to focus solely on our art. We took some of our favorite writers and other writers we hadn’t worked with before to a new inspiring backdrop, where we were able to just write and soak up the journey. And it was on our first trip in Florida when we wrote ‘Heart Break’ that we felt it all click.”
