Testament To Greatness: Thrash Legends To Rock The Paramount Testament

Thrash metal monsters Testament headline on Saturday, April 22 (doors at 6:30 pm) at The Paramount in Huntington; Sepultura and Prong also perform. Tickets and information: (631) 673-7300, or log on to paramountny.com. Testament is touring in support of its hit album Brotherhood Of The Snake (on Nuclear Blast Records). As their bio notes: “The forbearers of thrash resemble a Lovecraftian brotherhood. They’re the elder gods who set everything in motion for generations to imitate, while still ruling the roost from on high. Testament stand proudly among the same vanguard that boasted ‘The Big 4’ and beyond.” Sepultura For more than three decades, the quintet — Chuck Billy [vocals], Eric Peterson [guitar], Alex Skolnick [guitar], Steve DiGiorgio [bass], and Gene Hoglan [drums] — has delivered unadulterated, unbridled, and unbreakable metal in its purest form without compromise or any signs of slowing down. Over the course of releases ranging from The Legacy and Practice What You Preach to The Gathering and The Formation of Damnation, the group’s sales exceeded 14 million worldwide with two million in the U.S. alone. “The first record is always classic because you form the band, you’re totally into it, you go through the club scene, find yourself, and write your initial album over multiple years,” explained Peterson. “Then, you get signed and end up in a cycle. We took some time to do Brotherhood Of The Snake, and it shows. Different influences came in. Normally, there are a few straight ahead thrash songs. We haven’t had this many thrash tracks since The Legacy. It’s a new era.”

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred chose to suspend closer New York Mets closer Jeurys Familia for the first 15 games of the season, instead of the 30 games that his Yankees counterpart, Aroldis Chapman, received in 2016 for being involved in a domestic altercation. The good news, besides the shorter sentence, is that Familia should be fresher down the stretch, and he has missed the worst time of the year weather-wise in the northeast. Nice job by Vice Media, whose Friday night show, “Vice,” tackled the issue of whether the NCAA is exploiting college athletes with the arcane rules against players receiving financial compensation. I loved “The Gong Show,” a wacky sendup of “The Ted Mack Amateur Hour” that was hosted and created by Chuck Barris, who died recently. One of the regular talent judges was Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Steve Garvey, who was a good sport. One of the show’s resident characters, The Unknown Comic, a rapid-fire insult comic whose gimmick was to wear a bag over his head (in reality, he was funnyman Murray Chuck Langston), Barris once said to Garvey on a telecast: “Hey, Steve! Congratulations on getting a new boat. Your wife says that you have a little dinghy!” Barris often pushed the envelope in testing the censors. RIP, Chuckie baby!

The Space At Westbury Theater April 20 at 8 PM thespaceatwestbury.com (800) 745-3000 This upcoing concert marks the second appearance at The Space At Westbury Theater for Winwood, equally legendary for this stint as a founding member of Traffic as he is for his string of Top 10 '80s pop hits, including “Back In The High Life,” “Roll With It,” “Higher Love,” and more.

Buddy Guy

NYCB Theatre At Westbury April 29 at 8 PM thetheatreatwestbury.com (516) 334-0800 This road warrior of a guitarist may be the last great traveling bluesman in the traditional sense, and he's still out there rocking and recording, keeping up with (and still giving lessions to) the new breed. Few blues performers can match Guy's passionate singing and searing lead guitar, so prepare to feel the earth move with a performer like no other. – Bob Smith

Music Book Beat: Holger Petersen is a man who has worn many hats in his native Canada, and not always because of the climate: This veteran Canadian broadcaster and record producer hosts one of the world's most popular blues music radio programs, Saturday Night Blues on CBC Radio (and now on SiriusXM), a show that has been on the airwaves for more than 30 years; his CKUA radio program, Natch’l Blues, has been aired every week since 1969; he runs Stony Plain Records, one of Canada’s longest surviving independent record companies and one that has made its mark worldwide as well; he was a founder of The Edmonton Folk Music Festival; is a member of the Order of Canada; and has Holger earned more accolades than we Petersen have space to print. The personable Petersen is also a music author, and his newest book, Talking Music 2: Blues And Roots Music Mavericks, is now on bookshelves. The tome is as warm and sincere as Petersen himself, as it offers a series of actual interviews with legends such as B.B. King and Allen Toussaint, to Canadian stars such as Blood Sweat & Tears' David Clayton-Thomas and Ronnie Hawkins, to genre stars such as Rory Block, Bobby Charles, Wanda Jackson, Steve Miller, Solomon Burke, and many more artists. The book reads like actual conversations, and give a solid glimpse of why Petersen is as much a giant in the music world as the artists he covers – his appreciation and admiration for the talented musicians he's come to know shines through on every page. The book is now available at Amazon.com and wherever books are sold; the first edition of the book, issued in 2011, is also still in print, and both are vital reading for those who either love roots music or want to learn all they can about their favorite artists. – Bob Smith Harrison's History: The Harrison Family has announced the release of George’s autobiography I Me Mine – The Extended Edition (Genesis Publications), as well as George Harrison – The Vinyl Collection, a massive box set featuring all of the musician’s solo studio albums in one collection. Both were released on the eve of what would have been his 74th birthday in February. George Harrison’s I Me Mine was originally published by the specialist book publisher Genesis Publications in 1980. It became the first of many collaborations between the former Beatle and Genesis founder Brian Roylance. In conversation with his friend and former Beatles press officer Derek Taylor, and in a first-person commentary that accompanies his songs, Harrison's own words recount everything from his upbringing in Liverpool, to early Beatlemania, his spirituality and philosophy. This new extended version of the book now spans the complete length of Harrison’s career in music, told in his words and through 141 songs with hand written lyric sheets faithfully reproduced in full color. Now stretching to 632 pages, it features lyrics to more than 50 songs not previously included, as well as new photographs, many unpublished until now. Both the book and the massive boxed set are now available; find them at Amazon.com or at local book and record stores. PERFORMANCE Johnny Rivers The Lovin' Spoonful NYCB Theatre At Westbury

Johnny Rivers told Good Times that he once “played Westbury once with Chuck Berry.” Rivers made Berry's song Memphis, Tennessee, his own, reaching higher in the charts than the original version did. That song would leave the crowd abuzz on this evening, reminding all how Johnny Rivers Rivers chiseled part of his own foundation on Berry's music. Of course, no one knew on this night that Rivers would salute Berry for the last time (Berry had just passed away), which made a memorable show all the more unforgettable. Rivers further informed us that the show would be “four pieces, including guitar (Doug

Hamblin), bass (Darrel Cook), and keyboards (Skip Edwards). Rich Pagano of The Fab Faux will be sitting in on drums for the show … This tour is greatest hits – of course, you have to play the hits.” The current version of The Lovin' Spoonful opened with “You Didn't Have To Be So Nice.” Steve Boone, Joe Butler, Jerry Yester, Mike Arturie, and Phil Smith did the brand name proud despite John Sebastian's absence. Highlights included a medley of contemporaries' songs that evoked a powerful nostalgia, which the crowd came in large measure to re-live. Rivers hit the stage to “Secret Agent Man,” and the 18-song set continued with “Chicago Photo by Wayne Herrschaft, headlampdigital.com

Streaming Rules: It's a new world, kids: A recent report shows that the recorded music industry's biggest income generator is streaming, led by the market leader, Spotify. Vinyl is the one physical format that continues to show dramatic momentum – which makes me happy, as the vinyl record continuse to be the ultimate conveyance for real fans of songs and artists. The purchase and upkeep of the actual object that contains your passion has made itself felt to the youngest generation of consumers, who come out of the woodwork in large numbers when Taylor Swift or Adele drop another CD. Do I actually use my iPhone to “Spotify” a classic David Bowie or Supremes album whilst barreling down the LIE with the windows open? I sure as hell do, but nothing beats the Audio Technica AT LP-120 turntable waiting for me at home – it's the best of all worlds. Chart Watch: But then again, do charts mean anything these days? In the 1960s, I used to wait for the Tuesday night Top 20 countdown show on 77 WABC

radio, hosted by “Cousin” Bruce Morrow, who later on became my first celebrity interview subject. It was the week that Freda Payne had the #1 record on WABC, and it was a big deal. Both the national charts (Billboard was the giant, but Cashbox and Record World were also in the game), and the New York charts were as

important to me as stats were to baseball fans. The singles chart was a cultural barometer of the “youthquake” that ruled music in America. We knew the chart was based on what people walking into record stores were buying, and everyone wanted to be in on the next trend; that’s one thing that hasn't changed in the USA. Chart placement dictated if you were booked on the big TV

shows, if you headlined tours, and dominated magazine covers. As we all know, that has all gone the way of the 8-track tape and the hula hoop. A #1 single or album is still something for publicists to hoot about – but do such events, now compiled by streaming statistics and YouTube visits, have the same gravitas? No, they don't, yet I'd still be very happy to have a number one record … somewhere, anywhere! More Icons: Never a column goes by lately where I don't deliver an RIP, and this time, it's to the NYC downtown legend David Peel, who died after suffering a massive heart attack. Peel had been a mainstay in the Village during the early 70s when John Lennon and Yoko Ono hung out at Max's Kansas City and did local gigs with Elephant's Memory and David Peel & The Lower East Side. Peel remained on the scene for decades, and I most recently had he pleasure of watching him perform with Sea Monster at the 2015 Max's Kansas City reunion at Bowery Electric. He will be missed. The lesson here: When you have to opportunity to see legendary figures that impacted the pop culture that surrounds us, don't hesitate – go!

The beautiful town of Austin, Texas is always filled with vibrant people, engaging music, and fun. With warm weather year round, it becomes a superb destination for many. Every year, South By Southwest (SXSW) provides an opportunity for people of

TechnoBeat At SXSW With Richard Joseph Branciforte

all backgrounds and all career paths, to come together in the southwest for an experience unlike any other. Bridging together music, film, comedy,

important topic at the festival, spanning multiple days and reaching the minds of thousands of innovators and media members who will carry the message forward. After all was said and done with the interactive conference, the music conference and festival went into full swing. Walking down one of the main bar strips, 6th Street, the area was packed with performers, tourists, and salesmen. For a street that is normally alive and well, SXSW took 6th Street and the surrounding area to a new level. Every genre was represented to their fullest extent, with smaller bands such as Deep Cuts and Totally Mild playing at the local bar, to world famous hip hop artists such as Rick Ross, Desiigner, and D.R.A.M. making appearances at The MTV Woodies across the Congress

artists brought to the stage gave the room life. All types of trap music and dubstep were thrown at the audience, while they received it all with pure bliss.I’d have to give the “best set” award of the night to Ekali; his ability to mix across genres, include well-recognized songs, and keep the energy of the crowd going throughout the night was mind numbing, to say the least. After the show was over, I was lucky enough to get to meet with Alexander Lewis and Ekali and congratulate them on their awesome shows. They were both really cool and more than happy to chat for a bit about their excitement regarding SXSW and their hopes to grow in the future. They weren’t the only artists I got to speak with: A few hours before his set at Kingdom Nightclub in the downtown area, I sat down with the king of deep house and

the desire to make music under another alias, Hi-Lo, so that he is able to make as much distinct music as possible. “It gave me more musical freedom and I was able to release more music,” he said, adding, “Hi-Lo is a little darker and more club oriented and bassline driven, where Oliver Heldens is a little more all over the place and diverse.” With these two names, Oliver has been able to climb to the top. In July 2015, he released the song “Renegade Mastah” as the first track on his label, Heldeep Records. Since then, the label has grown, including a

future bass, Oliver Heldens, to get a bit of an idea about how he achieved his current success and where he sees himself and the genre going in the future.

weekly mix being released on the similarly branded “Heldeep Radio,” which is also a place where up-andcoming artists can be discovered given the high exposure the channel has earned. “Throttle is from Australia and he is very young … and he comes from more live stuff. He plays guitar and he comes more from disco. He calls his own style dirty disco. We made a track together called Waiting’ and we’re gonna make a lot more music together soon.” One of the

Since age 12, Heldens has been inspired by the likes of Fedde Le Grand, Laidback Luke, and Chocolate Puma, using them as a foundation to start his own career. His song “Gecko” grabbed the ears of Tiesto in 2013 and Helden has been on the rise since then, with his sound and persona growing along the way. “I think my sound has gotten a little more diverse,” Heledens said about his muscial journey. “I’m always trying to make new stuff which excites me, and I like to create stuff which doesn’t exist yet …The last few years I’ve been working with singers and putting more vocals on the tracks.” With that diversity has also come

main ideas to pick up on is that these artists don’t just have an influence and go based on those few people. The growth comes from feeding off the ideas and energy of each other. Two artists will both look up to each other and be an influence for the other. With that being noted, there’s always a step to take to further oneself and the brand that goes along with that: “My ambition is not to be the biggest but is to just do what I love and create,” said Heldens. And with that, I bid you all farewell. Thanks for sticking around ,and feel free to contact me with any comments at richiegtechno@gmail.com.

technology, humanities, marketing, government, and future innovation, SXSW is able to become the one-stop shop for professionals. I was lucky enough to get to spend the week at SXSW and experience everything it had to offer. I started my week rather lost and confused, engulfed by all of the events taking place simultaneously throughout the downtown area of Austin. The interactive track was the first to happen. The most interesting

events were talks and keynote speeches about the future of our society. Speakers enlightened the audience about where autonomous vehicles are preparing to go in the next 10 years, and what we must do to achieve those goals. Autonomy isn’t just a feature that needs to be added to cars, but rather a stand-alone milestone. Make an autonomous car that can be driven manually, not the other way around. Infrastructure needs to change with the cars so that cities can grow from where they currently are to achieve the status of “smart cities,” where these cars can thrive. Artificial intelligence and where our society needs to move next was an

Avenue bridge. With lines wrapping around the corner of hopeful festival goers, The MTV Woodies mixed together the music and modern production to form what felt like its own mini-festival inside of SXSW. Similar to The Woodies, the Pandora stage had full-out concert production, hosting acts such as Lewis Del Mar and T.I., including its own village next to the venue for patrons to grab a drink, hang out, and check out some cool tech. As you can imagine, the highlights of the week, for me at least, included all things EDM. Trap Nation and Chill Nation put on a showcase at The Monster Energy Outbreak House for two nights in an event that included an incredible array of artists. From Said The Sky, Coyote Kisses, and Ekali to Vanic, Medasin, San Holo, Alexander Lewis, and Illenium, this lineup was on point. Everything from the visual aspect and the energy the

Barb Wire Dolls: Riding With Vans

When Motörhead's legendary frontman Lemmy Kilmister saw Barb Wire Dolls perform in 2015, he took them under his wing and signed them to the Motörhead Music record label. Next, fans will see the five-piece rock band from Crete, Greece performing at the biggest punk show of them all: The 2017 Vans Warped Tour, which stops on July 8 at Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh. Frontwoman Isis Queen said: "Vans Warped Tour is where we will reach the youth who have the potential to change the world. It's time to inspire, and activate their thunder!" Queen isn't afraid to be heard on any topics under the sun."Thanks to the political and social climate in America, people are voicing their opinions louder than before,” she said. “With a need to speak up for themselves, female-fronted bands are gaining more and more power each day in the rock world. It's time again for a big change, a new movement, because I'm fed up and ready to shake things up." Find Bare Wire Dolls all over social media, including ReverbNation.

Kansas:

What, Leftoverture Again?

Classic rock legends Kansas will expand their “Leftoverture 40th Anniversary Tour” to more parts of the United States this fall. For the first time in its 43-year history, the band is performing the album in its entirety; the tour showcases more than two hours of classic Kansas music including hits, deep cuts, and new songs from their recent album, The Prelude Implicit. "We are having so much fun doing these ‘Leftoverture 40th Anniversary’ shows, we just want to keep doing them," said Kansas’

Richard Williams. "We had no idea when we started doing these, last fall, that they would be so popular. When we first started discussing this concept, we were just hoping to be able to do 10 of these type shows. We would not have predicted we would end up doing nearly 70 of them. I can't think of a better way to wrap up 2017, before taking a break from the road at the beginning of 2018, to record a new studio album." More information is available at kansasband.com.

After returning from a run throughout South America and before embarking on some shows with labelmates Arch Enemy and The Haunted, Lacuna Coil released a new video for a fan favorite, “Blood, Tears, Dust.” The video was directed and edited by Cosimo Alemà, and produced by the production company Borotalco. “Right now I can't tell you everything about ‘Blood, Tears, Dust’, as this video is part of something bigger, said singer Cristina Scabbia, who continued: “This is the core of who we are as a band: the sweat, the dirt, the raw energy. Hope you enjoy this video as much as I do!" Find the video at YouTube.
