That holds true for New Yorkbased soul singer Morgan James. On her debut for Epic Records, Hunter, she showcased her powerhouse voice, theatrical swing, and soulful poise. The album includes renditions of Prince’s “Call My Name” along

FILM Logan

Review by Cody Bell

Starring Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Green, Richard E. Grant, Eriq La Salle, Elise Neal, Elizabeth Rodriguez Directed by James Mangold 20th Century Fox What an unexpected treat: Logan is a superhero film that doesn't look, feel, or mimic the other 14,649 superhero films that came before it – and manages to be as entertaining and riveting as the best of the genre. Yes, this is the film that ushers in the unofficial “last appearance” by Hugh Jackman as Logan (better known to your kids as Wolverine), and it's a fitting goodbye to one of the most enduring comic book hero transfers ever made to what used to be celluloid. We take you deep into the future to the year 2029, and Logan is anything but a hero as the movie opens; he's an out-and-out lush who spends his time as, of all things, a driver-for-hire in-between sips of cheap hootch. He's tormented and haggard; he doesn't care about (and seem to resent) his time as Wolverine in The X-Men. He simply goes home, takes care of an aging Professor X (Stewart), guzzles, and plays out the stretch. Of course, things perk up quickly. Gabriela (Rodriguez) is fostering a young kid, Laura (a wonderful Keen); she finds Logan and asks him to protect a quite “special” child. Of

course, this isn't just tucking her in – there are some bad people out to get Laura, and Logan is just the man to keep her safe. Yet, the aging, doubtful Logan is a long way from his prime as Wolverine, and in the process he fights himself as much as he does the evildoers. Jackman is fantastic – seriously, this performance is Oscar bait – as this tortured anti-hero, and as he works amazingly off the radiant Keen, the chemistry between the two explodes off the screen. Director James Mangold (who also co-wrote the script) paces the film expertly; it's a

Cuisine & Confessions: A Delectable Circus At Staller Center

particularly violent thrill ride, but it's not so over-the-top that the mayhem gets in the way of one of the strongest stories ever devised in this genre. Yeah, the claws are back. And no, we don't believe this will be the final time we see Jackman as Logan – but either way, this movie is already a bonafide smash, even though it's unlike any of the other Marvel films. Even if you've never seen an X-Men movie, you'll be able to enjoy this without knowing the back story. Who knew such a thing was even possible?

Staller Center For The Arts at Stony Brook University presents a unique theatrical circus, Cuisine & Confessions, with nine skilled acrobats combining dance, music, comedy, and theater on The Staller Center Main Stage. There are two performances to choose from: Saturday, April 1 at 8 pm and Sunday, April 2 at 4 pm. Tickets are $42 at stallercenter.com; more information is at (631) 632-2787. Noted a WBGH Radio review, provided by Staller: “Cuisine & Confessions presents dramatic feats of physical prowess, choreography that touched on everything from ballet to hip hop (with plenty of acrobatics blended in), inventive staging and nonstop music. It was all delivered by a talented, daredevil cast of international performers.” Photo by Alexandre Galliez Cuisine & Confessions celebrates the memories triggered by cooking in the kitchen. Audience members can expect to be recruited to participate, asked to set their smart phones to measure cooking time, and may leave the theater nibbling the banana bread that is mixed and baked on stage, all while they watch elastic performers turn themselves into human projectiles that exhibit unlimited energy. Cuisine & Confessions is presented by the Montreal cirque troupe 7 Fingers Of The Hand (Les 7 doights de la main), as seen on Broadway in Pippin. Co-founders and co-artistic directors are Montreal’s Les doigts de las main’s Shana Carroll and Sébstien Soldevila. 6 • Good Times Magazine - March 21 - April 3, 2017

In the early days of television, boxing was a Saturday night staple on TV networks. After years of getting short shrift, boxing appears to be back on Saturday nights, which likely has more to do with Saturday nights being left for dead – “Saturday Night Live” reruns, anyone? – than an increase in interest. Nonetheless, Fox drew good ratings for a Deontay Wilder verus Gerald Washington fight, while CBS also did well with a world welterweight title fight between Keith Thurman and Danny Garcia. Steakhouse figured it was a perfect time to introduce their meaty roasted chicken wings, since wings are a sports fan favorite. Longhorn is also debuting lamb chops and its strawberries and cream shortcake this month. Dove Men+Care men’s grooming products are taking an unusual and risky approach to March Madness with the rollout of its “Real Strength Manifesto” campaign, which reminds fans to engage in sportsmanship and not be verbally abusive to opposing players and fans. Dove has signed J.J. Redick, Alonzo Mourning, and Ray Allen to serve as spokesmen. The Golf Channel has brought back “Feherty,” a talk show where PGA star David Feherty interviews golfers and celebrities from all walks of life; no subject is off the table.

Jazz & Blues

Earl's A Pearl: One of the top blues guitarists, Ronnie Earl, brings his Broadcasters back to the area as he headlines on Saturday, March 25 at B.B. King's Blues Club in New York City. Advance tickets are now on sale; log on to bbkingblues.com or call (212) 997-4144. Earl will perform songs from his newest album, Maxwell Street, now available via Stony Plain Ronnie Earl Records. Beth's A Best Bet: Nashville-based roots singer/guitarist Beth Garner is moving up the charts with her new album, Snake Farm. The new album showcases her soulful singing, with its roots firmly in blues, gospel, and soul with rock & roll flourishes – as well as her guitar work that amoves between standard and slide guitar. Recorded mostly live at Slack Key Studios in Woodbine, Beth Tennessee, Snake Farm was Garner produced by Garner and Randy Kohrs. The backing band features Rory Hoffman (sax, keyboards and rhythm guitar), Wes Little (drums), Steve Forrest (bass) and Angela Primm and Gale Mayes (background vocals). One of the tunes that's getting airplay and notice is one with a unique name: “‘Backroads Freddie’ is a little ditty I came up with while literally taking the backroads,” said Garner. “There are alleyways in my neighborhood and when I would take a short cut; the words popped in my head. I took the idea to Fred Koller and he gave me some words to fill out the verses. I wanted the music to depict driving, so under the solos you can actually feel the band switch gears into a ZZ Top groove. I wanted this song to become something fun that people could cover and jam on. I initially wanted a guy to sing it, so I sang it low and put overdrive on the vocals to make it growl.” Put On That Bibb, Baby: More from Stony Plain: Today (March 21) will see the release of the album Migration Blues by Eric Bibb. The release showcases Bibb’s vocals, guitars, six-string banjo and contrabass guitar, backed by Michael Jerome Browne (guitars, vocals, banjos, mandolin and Eric Bibb triangle) and J.J. Milteau (harmonica). The 15 tracks on Migration Blues include covers of Bob Dylan’s “Masters Of War” and Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land.” An arrangement of the traditional “Mornin’ Train” closes the album. Bibb says about his new effort. “With this album, I want to encourage us all to keep our minds and hearts wide open to the ongoing plight of refugees everywhere. As history shows, we all come from people who, at some time or another, had to move.” The album is now available everywhere music is sold. BlokHed Studios

Not Long To Go: If we can get through this crummy March, April will bring baseball season! As we dream of road trips to Boston and Los Angeles, here's something just as hot: The area's major recording studios and rehearsal facilities, which are usually bubbling with the cream of area musicians. One of the time-tested favorites in the area scene for major league recordings is Tom Stiegler's Blokhed Studios, which offers recording, rehearsals, live sound reinforcement, and PA and lighting rentals – but don't take our word for it: See for yourself at the Blokhedstudios.com website, where you can see and hear a rocking clip from the progressive band And The Day Is Mine on Blokhed TV (which you can also catch on YouTube). There great photos of this expansive modern studio as well. Learn more about Blokhed by calling them at (631) 586-4111. Area artists continue to visit Beneath The Sun Rehearsal & Recording Studio in Hicksville as they lay down tracks with veteran engineer and musician Mick James, or to catch up on rehearsals before important concerts and shows.

In of late have been the hard rock cover band called 100 Proof; veteran hard rockers Grimm Jack (check out their song “Sex Drive” on ReverbNation); Sherri Roxx; our recent “Long Island Spotlight” featured artists Inherit The Earth; Rude Mood; and many more rockers, singers, and bands. To learn how to use this multi-faceted studio for your next rehearsals or recording projects, call them at (631) 882-1327.

There are only 1,000 good reasons to use a professional recording studio instead of the “DIY” method if you're serious about a recording career, and here's one that's a stone fact: The best way to get the results you want is to bounce your idea off the ear of a fellow musician. Most top engineers and producers have been musicians themselves, and one such music pro – Jim Sabella of Sabella Studios in Roslyn Heights – is also a fine guitarist and Stolas has performed live and on record for decades. Check out Sabella's Instragram feed for news and photos of his latest equipment. The hot area group Cavemollies were in recently; they're a red-hot classic rock band that performs the

music of The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Black Crowes, David Bowie, The Who, and more; the group is comprised of Phil Feit, John Marino, Rick Venture, Joseph Weitekamp, and P.J. Mumola. Also in was Sky Shape, which performed live at Sabella, which set off a spark of a new concept: Sabella Studios is floating the idea of beginning a regular open jam session right at the studio. It's not official yet, but to keep up with all the latest news – and to find out how to be the next artist to go national after working at Sabella – call (516) 4840862, or log on to sabellastudios.com. New to the area scene is Lisa Polizzi's Janis Joplin Experience, where the talented young singer takes on the role of the legendary 1960s singer in a new tribute band. The big-voiced vocalist is backed by a crack band including Paul Marotta Jr. on drums, Johnny Mac on guitar, Eddie Yeznach on bass, and Cliff Counes on keyboards. The group has been buy rehearsing for upcoming shows, including a double bill with The Rod Stewart Experience on May 14 at The Brookside Auditorium in Merrick.

VuDu Studios, helmed by Mike Watts in Port Jefferson Village, continues to be the recording home of alt rock bands from all across the country; learn how to record there by calling them at (631) 403-4550. Big news from national artists, as usual: Working at VuDu of late have been KBB Records artists Scare Don't Fear; Hopesfall; and Stolas, as the new video for “Bellwether” was recently released; the new effort was shot by Tom Flynn and directed by Mike Watts. This is the first single from the band's self-titled new album, which will be out on Equal Vision Records this spring. If you're a guitarist or other stringedinstrument player, you should be aware of Bayside's Scalcione Instruments, which offers exemplary quality setups, repairs, modifications, and remarkable

custom builds. One of the area's few luthiers who has been serving the area music community since 1980, Michael Scalcione is a veteran musician as well as a recording and mixing engineer and producer and who began working on instruments while he was still a teenager. During his years in the studio working with top national artists, Scalcione deepened his technical knowledge, expertise and craft by continuing to work on instruments while expanding his repertoire in the fields of analog/digital electronics, computer hardware/software design and networking, and blossoming a career as an Information Systems Specialist. In 2015, he travelled to Cremona, Italy to attend John Monteleone's Master Classes in Guitar Making, reawakening his passion in the craft and art as a luthier. Our meager words can't do justice to

the quality, beauty and skill of Scalcione's craftsmanship; log on to scalcione.us and get a glimpse of his guitar work, as well as his custom builds and other projects. Remember: You don't have to own a $5,000 guitar or string instrument to take advantage of this master craftsman's work. Call Scalcione Instruments at (718) 310-3096. The still-new Rapture Sound Studios in Syosset hasn't been around all that long, but its reputation continues to rise day by day as an “in” place for rehearsals. Rapture features five new state-of-the-art rehearsal rooms, and the reviews we've been getting is that it's

Cavemollies

been a musician's dream ever since its doors opened not that long ago. Among the musical friends the crew at Rapture have made along the way have been the rocking Average Subjects, and too many others than we have room to list here. The studio is always bringing new equipment and accessories; check out one of their amazing new drum heads on their website. Learn more about Rapture or schedule a free tour by calling them at (516) 433-0070, or log on to rapturesound.com. Savage Sounds Recording Studio in West Hempstead recently revamped its website, which now is chock full of information and photos about a facility that not only can record your sounds, but deliver solid production, artist development, CD replication, and more services than we have room to list here. Log on to savagesoundsinc.com to see and hear it all, or call the studio at (516) 405-0049.

nn Wilson is in the midst of a 20-date solo tour; the “Ann Wilson Of Heart” cross-country trek kicked off Tuesday, March 8 at The Moore Theatre in Wilson’s Seattle hometown – and one of the select dates is at The Space At Westbury Theater, which offers Wilson and her band on Thursday, March 30. For tickets and information: (516) 283-5566, or log on to thespaceatwestbury.com. “The stage is a magical place where I can be beautifully in and out of control, where I can build a fire and then jump into it,” said the pioneering Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame legend who’s known for her force-of-nature vocals. “The stage is where I have always lived; where I've expressed my deepest emotions and supreme joys ... I suppose I am addicted to it. I’ve never been much good at talking, but I can sing, and when I sing I connect with people in a much deeper, higher way.” What will fans experience at these shows? “People can expect the unexpected in 2017,” said Wilson. “A beautiful, classy set with an elegant, artistic production …The music will be a mix of songs that have powered

my life; iconic soul stirring covers, songs from my years of solo work, and the unforgettable songs of Heart.” Musicians on board for the “Ann Wilson Of Heart” tour include Craig Bartock on guitar (a Heart member for a dozen years, who also performed in The

Ann Wilson Thing for two years) from San Francisco; Andy Stoller on bass (an Ann Wilson Thing member for two years) from Seattle; and Denny Fongheiser on drums and percussion (a Heart member in the 1990s for two years) from Los Angeles. The name for the upcoming tour, explained Wilson, “is to give people a point of recognition; to help people understand who I am and where I came from.” The tour follows Heart’s 2016 Beautiful Broken album and summer headlining tour with Joan Jett & The Blackhearts and Cheap Trick, along with Heart solo shows before and after. Her signature band continues on as well: “Heart is always evolving, changing,” said Wilson. "It is a living organism. Right now it's in a cocoon of metamorphosis, and we will see what emerges when the time is right."

The group has made a splash with its recent shows at 89 North Music Venue in Patchogue, and is looking toward a busy summer as word-of-mouth about their vibrant concerts full of best-loved classic rock songs, outstanding playing, and Fazio’s one-of-a-kind vocals and charisma continues to grow stronger by the week. More Max’s: Jungle Records UK, the home of all those Johnny Thunders reissues as well as the DVD of the Lookin' For Johnny documentary, has taken it upon itself to release an expanded edition of Max's Kansas City: 1976 & Beyond – the first compilation album of the downtown New York City underground band scene, which eventually gave birth to punk and new wave. Full disclosure: I contributed extensive liner notes for the new gatefold sleeve as I was front and center and in the middle of all this as it happened, and, fortunately, my memory still works. My single with The Psychotic Frogs, 1977’s "Death To Disco," is included on this expanded version of the Max's album. That single, which launched the still-controversial "Disco Sucks" movement, was highly touted in the pages of Good Times in 1978, as thenentertainment editor Kurt Loder was a Psych Frogs fan, as was David Fricke, also working in the offices during that time period. Max's has always taken the back seat to CBGB, in spite of the fact that CBGB as we knew it came into being almost 10 years after Max's opened in its first incarnation in 1965. Max’s was literally the first underground rock club in the era of go-go joints and twist party discotheques. CBGB, previously known as Hilly's On The Bowery (owned by Hilly Krystal), became the place for New York bands during a period when Max's closed briefly, to be re-opened in 1975 under new ownership. In 1981, Max's closed permanently after its 16-year run, just as MTV became the ultimate arbiter

of all things to do with rock music. As a result, MTV constantly name-checked CBGB and acted as if Max's never existed. The reality is that if Max's hadn't been around CBGB would most likely still be Hilly's On The Bowery. The media’s longtime ignorance of the importance of Max's has led to my decades-long crusade to set the record straight, as longtime readers of this column must have figured out years ago.

Photo provided by Jimi LaLumia

All the original tracks except one are present on the expanded edition of Max's Kansas City 1976. There are three tracks from Wayne County & The Backstreet Boys, two from The Fast, and one each from Cherry Vanilla, Suicide, Harry Toledo, and The John Collins Band. Only Pere Ubu's "Final Solution” is missing, as terms apparently were not met. So how did Jungle make up the difference? They did so by including recordings by Iggy Pop, Sid Vicious, Nico, The New York Dolls, Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers, and those previously mentioned Psychotic Frogs, to name but a few; I’d like to think that more than made up the difference. The new edition of the Max's album should pop up in time for this year’s Record Store Day. A Memorial Day weekend celebration of the album's re-release has been announced by Max's mastermind Peter Crowley, and it will be at Bowery Electric. We'll see you there.

Zara Larsson:

Capturing The U.S.

Prior to that, Larsson was already a major star in Europe, thanks to Introducing and Let Me Reintroduce Myself, her two EPs of 2013, and a string of multi-platinum singles (“Uncover,” “Carry You Home,” and “Rooftop”) that appeared on her 2014 album, which was titled 1. The artist’s fan base has been buoyed thanks to literally millions of views on social media websites and news reports. Follow Zara Larrson at zaralarsson.se and all over social media and YouTube.

Sabrina Claudio’s Atlantic Records debut EP, Confidently Lost, has led to a dual video for two tracks: “Tell Me” and “Too Much Too Late,” currently garnering thousands of hits and views on both YouTube, cementing her status as one of 2017’s hottest new major label stars. As a touring artist who is still a newcomer to some music fans, news of her talents is spreading quickly; she has already sold out a major show at New York City's Mercury Lounge on March 9. If you’re into searing passion, Claudio is the artist for you: Through her sultry and seductive soul style, Claudio slips in and out of musings on lust, moments of longing, and meditations on love over a soundtrack comprised of minimal 90s-style R&B beats, noir jazz, and Bossa Novainduced rhythms. Last year, this Miami-born and Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter independently unveiled her debut, Confidently Lost EP, on SoundCloud, which in just under six months has amassed more than three million cumulative plays. Find Claudio on all social media platforms; hear her at SoundCloud, see her on YouTube.com.
