FILM 50 Shades Darker

Review by Cody Bell

Starring Dakota Johnson, Jamie Dornan, Marcia Gay Harden, Eric Johnson, Kim Basinger, Amy Price-Francis Directed by James Foley Universal

Sex smells. E.L. James' best-selling adult-themed books are crassly exploited – to cop a line from a much better sex film, 1977's Kentucky Fried Movie – in this sequel to the original, terrible Fifty Shades Of Gray movie that managed, somehow, to be enough to a hit to spawn a follow-up. Let us get the good stuff out of the way first: At the very least, Dakota Johnson (as Anastasia) is a real movie star in the making. Capable of expertly expressing pathos, lust, humor, doubt, and shyness; the daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith deserves better roles in the future and has a rare quality that most actors don't even come close to possessing: the ability to be completely convincing even when given utterly ridiculous things to do. That's where the plaudits end, however. Jamie Dornan, in his (hopefully) last starring role as Christian, the rich guy with a difference, has the likability of a buzzing locked-inside-a-car bee that's heading right for your nose (as well as the range of a four-by-six piece of laminated plywood). It's not all his fault – it's the premise that's completely faulty With Denzel Washington’s masterful film version of August Wilson’s Fences winning major awards, it is heartening to see Wilson’s Jitney arrive on Broadway in a perfectly cast, powerhouse production, expertly directed by Wilson veteran Ruben Santiago-Hudson. Written as a one-act in 1978, Jitney was Wilson’s first play in his epic undertaking to chronicle decade by decade the life experience of black Americans. Revised and expanded, “Jitney” premiered off–Broadway in 2000. Even in this early work the Pulitzer Prizewinning playwright proved himself a genius at creating vibrant, full-bodied characters; naturalistic, colloquial dialogue that is really

here: If Christian was a 27-year-old gas station attendant instead of a guy with more money than the gross national product of Brazil, Ana wouldn't even give this guy a second glance. Since he's an oily, pervy S&M freak and she's a complete emotional sellout … who is there to root for here? Not Ana, not Christian, and not anyone else in this sad, sorry little piece of trash. All the men in the film are sexist, leering pervs and slobs, yet they're presented like they're to be admired. In all, this movie is about as titillating as your Aunt Betty, who for some reason always smells like halibut and

Wheat Thins. Films based on material like this only reinforce an old bromide: Sex is always evil. Hollywood seems incapable of producing a film that explores sexuality as the joyous component of adult life it is meant to be; instead, it's always flickering neon and S&M and people proudly displaying narcissism, with women used as objects. There's a lot wrong with Fifty Shades Darker, but in a lighthearted publication like this one, we won't get too much deeper into it – mainly because this horrid movie doesn't deserve even this much ink.

plan; malicious gossip Turnbo (deliciously played by Michael Potts), stirs up trouble; Korean war veteran Doub (Keith Randolph Smith) tries to keep the peace; and their dignified boss Becker (the spectacular John Douglas Thompson), cannot find forgiveness for his prodigal, once golden-boy

They bring subtlety, warmth and a seemingly easy-going naturalism to these juicy, unforgettable characters – each of whom Wilson has given his own aria – a self-contained story that reveals his past and his unique personality. By the play’s end, we come to respect and admire Becker, laugh at Turnbo’s pretense that he just wants to “live and let live,” root for Youngblood and Rena to make a better life for themselves and their child, and trust that Booster has learned something valuable from his father’s unquenchable anger towards him. In his customary manner, Wilson deceptively entertains us with his characters’ riffs, but Jitney also obliquely touches on the world outside the office: the G.I. bill for Vietnam vets, the devastation to black businesses of urban renewal that doesn’t renew anything, and how an African-American navigates through life holding on to pride and dignity in a racist society, but sometimes having to compromise and even sacrifice one’s pride for a better future. One of the most rewarding, entertaining and involving plays this season, Jitney is great, soul-satisfying theater. – Jane Klain

Jitney • Friedman Theatre profound poetry; and intense dramatic confrontations as he explored his familiar themes of flawed fathers and their judgmental sons, and a black man’s responsibilities to his family. Jitney is set in Pittsburgh’s Hill District in 1977 in the ramshackle storefront office of a gypsy car service (kudos to David Gallo’s evocative set) whose existence is threatened by the city’s condemnation for “urban renewal.” The men gossip and recall past loves and hurts: alcoholic Fielding (played with almost balletic grace by Anthony Chisholm), cages money from his co-workers for booze; Youngblood (Moonlight’” Andre Holland), a hotheaded young Vietnam vet, has a secret 6 • Good Times Magazine - March 7 - 20, 2017

son Booster (Brandon Dirden) who returns from the penitentiary after serving 20 years for murder and whom Becker blames for breaking his mother’s heart. The explosive almost Biblical confrontation between father and son is one of the most searing pieces of writing and acting to seen on stage in many a season. Rounding out the terrific ensemble are Shealy (Harvey Blanks), the local numbers runner; Philmore (Ray Anthony Thomas), a customer; and Rena (Carra Patterson) Youngblood’s girlfriend, who wants him to take more responsibility for their child.

will recall how McKay conveyed the tension of the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics and the tragedy that befell the Israeli team as 11 of its members were kidnapped and murdered by a Palestinian terrorist organization. It was as difficult a broadcasting assignment possible, and McKay was able to show that a sports reporter could also be a newsman. Costas has never been shy to discuss the politics of sports and other issues that dwarf what is happening on the playing field in a thoughtful manner, never gratuitous grandstanding designed to create attention. It will be interesting to see how comfortable Tirico will be to emulate Costas in this important regard. beneffiting AHRC, a nonprofit that helps improve the lives of adults and children with cognitive disabilities, took place in midtown Manhattan before spring training camps opened. New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz was an honoree at the dinner along with New York Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez and New York Mets infielder Wilmer Flores. Cruz acknowledged that he knew that the Giants were going to release him because of salary cap restraints. The personable star admitted at last spring’s Sports Emmy Awards ceremony that playing in New York was a key to his ability to garner endorsement deals with a

number of national brands. I asked him if market size would play a part in his decision of where to play, and he said that it would be an important factor; it was refreshing to hear an athlete shy away from the hoary cliche about how getting a championship ring is the most important consideration. Cruz was one of several Giants players who made the fateful one-day trip to Miami the week before they were slated to play the Green Bay Packers in a first-round playoff game in Green Bay. Was the Giants playing in the NFL’s answer to the North Pole the first week of January a factor in going to South Florida? “That’s a good theory, but it wasn’t the reason we went there,” he answered with a smile. It's easy to surmise that many long-suffering Jets fans would rather see their team avoid playing in a Super Bowl than suffer the humiliation that the Atlanta Falcons endured at the hands of Tom Brady and The New England Patriots. Lady Gaga put on arguably the most acrobatic and memorable halftime show in Super Bowl history, during which she caught a football in mid-air – which was more than any Jets tight end has done in about 20 years. Longtime New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira will serve as a baseball analyst for ESPN this season. The former All-star was accessible to the media as a player, and a frequent

guest on ESPN’s “Mike & Mike Show” morning show where he showed an unexpected sharp sense of humor. Former New York Knicks guard and current NBA TV analyst Jalen Rose has gotten the green light from ABC Television to film a trial episode, better known in the TV biz as a pilot, about his life as both a former player and a single parent. We’ll learn if it has been picked up by ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey during the network’s Upfront presentation in May.

They keep coming back, and for a good reason: ZBTB is exactly as the name implies – a doppleganger of a tribute band that comes as close to its heroes, The Zac Brown Band, as any cover band we’ve ever seen. Little wonder why big crowds keep converging at Mul’s to check out these country rockin’ favorites. The Legendary Murphys • Loose Junk K.J. Oh, You Guys: While they're not the money-making powerhouses they were in the 1970s and 1980s, it's clear that “men's sophisticate” magazines – you know, the kind with centerfolds – aren't going away. In this year's announcement that only proved that last year's announcement was a bad idea gone wrong, Playboy is bringing back nude models, effective with the March/April issue. Cooper Hefner, the son of Hugh Hefner and now the magazine's chief creative officer, announced on Twitter: “I’ll be the first to admit that the way in which the magazine portrayed nudity was dated, but removing it entirely was a mistake … Nudity was never the problem because nudity isn’t a problem. Today we’re taking our identity back and reclaiming who we are.” We're sure nobody at Playboy would admit it, but perhaps one of the reasons for Playboy turning back to nudity is that one of their chief newsstand rivals, Penthouse, has righted the ship after years of losing money (and readers). The magazine's fortunes have changed under current CEO Kelly Holland, who turned things around the old-fashioned way, according to reports: She cut costs in both printing and editorial, yet increased the quality of the photography and articles while relying on a “print first” strategy – all while retaining the pushing-the-boundaries style that helped original owner Bob Guccione make Penthouse one of the most successful magazines in history. Holland's Penthouse still packs much more of an erotic punch than Playboy does; there's certainly no confusing one for the other. Dynamic Comedy: Comedy Dynamics' fourth season of its original stand-up series “Coming To The Stage,” hosted by Andy Kindler, is now available on most streaming platforms including Hulu, Roku, iOS, Amazon, and Android. This season will see the return of Mr. Microphone, a 7foot-tallmicrophone, who, along with Doug Stanhope, Nick Cannon, and Todd Bridges (who reprises his role as ... well, Todd Bridges), will feature Anto Chan, Kyle Clark, Barbara Gray, Kelly Landry, Jamie Loftus, Cory Loykasek, Emily Maya Mills, Neel Nanda, Feraz Ozel, Erica Rhodes, Danny Soloman, and Yedoye Travis. “Coming To The Stage” Andy showcases up-and-coming Kindler comics by allowing them to literally "come to the stage" to perform their stand-up in front of a live studio audience with exposure on numerous digital platforms. "I was happy to make young comedians feel even more nervous with my awkward introductions," said Kindler. "Andy Kindler is an absolute legend, and gives this season a level of gravitas which is reflected in the comedy. Plus, we added some more neon lights to the set," whimsically noted Brian Volk-Weiss, CEO of The Nacelle Company. Photos: Playboy courtesy Playboy Enterprises; Penthouse courtesy Penthouse

Homeward Bound: The Life Of Paul Simon By Peter Ames Carlin (Henry Holt)

Portland, Oregon-based journalist Peter Ames Carlin has written lengthy biographies of Bruce Springsteen, Brian Wilson, and Paul McCartney, but those three world famous artists have had numerous books and countless articles written about them. Coincidentally, both Springsteen and Wilson must have tired of having others write about them, as both recently released autobiographies. The same can’t be said of another musician from Queens; Paul Simon; in spite of all of his success, there has not been a definitive book penned about him – until now. Carlin was unable to get access to either Simon or his longtime up-and-down partner and childhood friend, Art Garfunkel, but he did speak to hundreds of other friends, musicians, relatives, and business associates. The author

BOOK BEAT With Lloyd Carroll

displays his thorough research early in the book, as he goes into painstaking detail about Simon growing up in Kew Gardens Hills, with emphasis on how attending PS 164 affected Simon’s life as he performed in plays and talent shows. It was there that he met Garfunkel. “Artie” and Simon would remain classmates at Forest Hills High School, where they would taste their first bit of pop chart success with a song Simon wrote, “Hey Schoolgirl,” which recorded not under the aegis of Simon & Garfunkel but rather the pseudonym Tom & Jerry in honor of the famous cat and mouse cartoon tandem. Surprisingly the boys were not the most successful teen act to come out of Queens in 1958: The 14-year-old Fresh Meadows guitarist Al Kooper was a member of The Royal Teens who had a Top 10 hit with “Short Shorts.” Kooper would go on to co-write “This Diamond Ring,” a #1 hit for Gary Lewis & The Playboys in 1965, and three years after Kooper formed Blood, Sweat & Tears.

Simon and Kooper crossed paths early in each other’s lives, and have remained friends to this day. While Simon was always a talented musician, his first love may have been baseball. Carlin makes it clear that in spite of his diminutive size, Simon was always a very good athlete. Simon would not shy away from fist fights with bullies, and was a good outfielder. Forest Hills High School baseball coach Chet Gusick employed Simon as his lead-off hitter, and the player batted a respectable .296. The two have remained friends until this day, and for years attended Yankees games together. Simon and Garfunkel went their separate ways for a short time after high school, as the former attended Queens College and the latter studied mathematics at Columbia. They would starting singing together again in 1964, and hit paydirt in 1965 with Simon’s composition, “The Sounds If Silence,” and they enjoyed a terrific chart run right through the end of 1970. The duo’s relationship has always been complicated, as has been evidenced by their many reunions and bitter breakups. The reasons are manifold: Simon has always been a sharp or ruthless businessman,, depending on one’s viewpoint. When they were getting their first taste of fame as Tom & Jerry, Simon signed a publishing and recording artist as a solo

artist, but neglected to tell Garfunkel. Simon was the composer and skilled musician, but the handsome Garfunkel had the stage presence and angelic voice. It would be Garfunkel who got to star in a few Hollywood films, the most famous being Carnal Knowledge. SImon did get to star in the 1980 bomb OneTrick Pony, and had a supporting role in the 1977 Woody Allen Academy Award-winner Annie Hall. Simon would also contribute original music to one of this writer’s favorite films, 1975's Shampoo. Queens is known as the “world’s borough,” and Carlin notes how Simon has always had his ear attuned to music from all parts of the world. One of S&G’s last hits together was 1970's Peruvian folk song, “El Condor Pasa.” In his solo career, Simon would utilize South African musicians for his 1986 album Graceland and Jamaican players for his reggae-influenced 1972 smash, Mother And Child Reunion.” Carlin supplies ample entertainment industry insider stories and gossip. Clive Davis was long a champion of Simon’s when he was the president of Columbia Records, but his successor, Walter Yetnikoff, couldn’t stand Simon. “Saturday Night Live” executive producer Lorne Michaels tapped Simon to host the second-ever “SNL” episode in the fall of 1975, and several cast members were resistant because of Simon’s brooding persona. Yet, Simon surprised them by showing a genuine flair for comedy. Michaels is arguably Simon’s best friend today, according to the author. Just about the only weakness in this book is that there isn’t a lot of information about Simon’s three marriages, nor his relationship with his oldest son, Harper. That criticism aside, this is the definitive life story of Paul Simon, and it’s told in a way that should please both casual and diehard fans.

Records start at $1; admission is $5 for the Long Island show.

TBS: New Tune Blasts Through Paper

Now a veteran band that ranks as one of the most successful ever to hail from Long Island, Taking Back Sunday has debuted its new music video for “Call Come Running” via Paper Magazine. Featured on the band’s seventh studio album Tidal Wave, which debuted at #8 on the iTunes chart, the video, directed by Djay Brawner, is a loose sequel to the previous video for “You Can’t Look Back” which found vocalist Adam Lazzara suffering from an unidentified bloody affliction. At press time, the band was spanning the globe on a UK and European tour that will take the group to Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. On March 26, the band will be making a stop in Hawaii at The Republik; in May, Taking Back Sunday will be tackling the U.S. festival circuit at Rocklahoma, Rock On the Range, Carolina Rebellion, and The Bud Light River City Rockfest in San Antonio, TX. Taking Back Sunday remains Lazzara (vocals), John Nolan (guitars, vocals), Eddie Reyes (guitars), Shaun Cooper (bass), and Mark O’Connell (drums). Tidal Wave was released via Hopeless Records last year, and was produced by Mike Sapone (who has worked with O'Brother and Mansions) in Charlotte, North Carolina, and mixed by Claudius Mittendorpher (Weezer, Drowners, Ra Ra Riot).

Ch-Ch-Changes: The Coliseum & The Beach

After an extensive remodeling and renovations, the new, smaller version (capacity is 12,000 to 13,000 for most events) of The Nassau Veteran Memorial Coliseum – the Hempstead shed has already been dubbed by many as “The New Coliseum” – is ready to be unveiled. Now presented by New York Community Bank (NYCB), the revived venue kicks off with (of course) Billy Joel on April 5 in a show that's already sold out. Also coming up: Stevie Nicks and The Pretenders on April 6; Idina Menzel on April 7; Lionel Richie and Mariah Carey on April 8; Mark Anthony on April 9; WWE Monday Night Raw on April 10; Def Leppard on April 15, and a host of other events – including the final Billy Joel performances of The Ringling Brothers Circus in May. Tickets are at nassaucoliseum.com. In other major venue knews: Nikon Peter isn’t clicking any more ... in a way. The popular amphitheater at Jones Beach in Frampton Wantagh has also made news with its sudden name change: It's now dubbed Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater (say that five times fast); among the shows already booked for this summer are Train on June 14; a duo of guitar heroes in Steve Miller and Peter Frampton on June 17; Rod Stewart and Cyndi Lauper on July 18; and more. Crazy Town has been writing new material for their next album release; until then, the group has a relentless tour schedule that will see them perform dates in the United States, Europe, Australia, and Japan. The Artist & His Sound: Tannous started his career on the Long Island scene with Chiba-Ken in 2003, opening for national acts in venues such as The Downtown and The Crazy Donkey. The band moved to Crazy Town Hollywood in 2009, quickly gained recognition on the Sunset Strip, and were even invited to play at a Playboy Mansion Super Bowl party. In addition to his music, Tannous has also been a guitar tech, most notably for The Rock & Roll Fantasy Camp, getting to meet and learn from rock legends Rami Jaffe, Meat Loaf, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley, and Bruce Kulick of Kiss, Sammy Hagar, Elliot Easton, and more stars. Asked what advice he'd give nervous beginners, E.T. said: "I would hope you get nervous! That just shows it matters to you. I still get and love those sweet little butterflies that flutter through my head all the way down to my legs and out my sweaty palms. Once I strike that first note or chord, all of my nerves disappear. Think of it like taking a test you really studied for. You're very nervous right up to that moment your teacher brings you the test, but once you read and answer the first question, the anxiety goes away. Biggest thing is: Don't let your fears dictate your actions, don't let anyone ever dissuade you from your goals or dreams, and never, ever give up!" To Learn More: E.T. encourages local artists or musicians that need help or have questions about the music industry to reach out and contact him. The ratings have been up, but the Grammy Awards saw the biggest ratings spike of them all; we clearly still enjoy the glam and glitter of the rich and famous giving each other awards. Katy Perry The Grammys have always been a bone of contention for me. Kate Upton:

A Triple Treat On SI

Supermodel Kate Upton graces not one, not two, but three covers of the 2017 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue, now flying off newsstand racks. Upton's appearance on three national covers is a first; it also marks her third cover appearance (2012, 2013), tying her with Christie Brinkley, who returns this year (at the age of 63), Tyra Banks, and Heidi Klum. Elle Macpherson holds the record, with five SI Swimsuit covers. Upton once again headlines the issue, which includes five previous cover models (Nina Agdal, Christie Brinkley, Ashley Graham, Hannah Jeter, and Chrissy Teigen), five mothers (and one expecting), five athletes (Simone Biles, Genie Bouchard, Aly Raisman, Serena Williams, and Caroline Wozniacki) and seven rookies, was assembled by Swimsuit Editor M.J. Day. "The women of SI Swimsuit 2017 are a collection of change agents, pioneers, power brokers, and breakout stars-in-waiting who have in their own way redefined the cultural conversation around beauty," said Day. "These ladies embody character and beauty — and they prove that when it comes

to beauty, there is not one singular definition. This is the very essence of SI Swimsuit, and it's our guiding principle as we move forward." See more at SI.com/Swimsuit.
