Hank Is Evil

We realize that's a lot of names we've included in the cast list, but it's for a good reason: Long Island-based filmmaker Joe Pontillo assembled a gigantic list of area comedians for this low budget indie comedy, now available for you to view completely free at both YouTube and Facebook. If you're in the mood for corn, blood, pratfalls, bad one-liners, general goofiness, and a complete sense of comic abandon, let us warn you: Hank Is Evil is gonna kill you … in the comedic sense, of course. This whacked, joke-packed farce is based on a web series, “The Life And Times Of Hank E. Valdooer.” In this film, hapless, nebbishy

Peoria-based “super villain” Hank – he's not hard to spot as he looks like Snidely Whiplash dressed by Party City – runs up against a mysterious adversary who's even more of a prick that he is, and is out to get him no matter what it takes. En route to an “epic” battle, there are more one-liners, quips, pratfalls, goof-ups, dress downs, and chestnuts than you can count. A lot of the fun is in spotting top area comedians, such as Eric Haft and Chris Monty, as they pop up on the screen. The film obviously has a zilch budget and

he last of the legit love song singers is back, and he’s right on time: Ed Sheeran has made history with his singles “Shape Of You” and “Castle On The Hill,” debuting at #1 and #6 respectively on Billboard’s Hot 100, becoming the first artist ever to debut two singles in the top 10 simultaneously in the chart’s 58-year history. The two tracks – released in tandem at the top of the new year – are the first singles from the multi-Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter’s third studio album that’s titled “÷” (pronounced “divide”), which arrives on March 3 via Atlantic Records. “Shape Of You” is Sheeran’s first #1 on the Hot 100 as an artist, with his smash single “Thinking Out Loud” earning him his previous career-high on the chart, holding #2 for a record-setting, eight consecutive weeks. Sheeran co-wrote Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself,” which held the #1 spot on the Hot 100 for two consecutive weeks last year, and topped the 2016 year-end Hot 100. “Love

“It feels amazing to debut at #1 in the U.S., especially after being away for so long,” said Sheeran of his latest milestone. “Topping the Hot 100 for the first time and to have ‘Castle On The Hill’ also debut in the top 10 … I’m speechless. I really wanted to come back with those two songs to show the different sides of my music and what people can expect on ‘÷.’ The response to both songs has been absolutely incredible. I can’t wait to share the rest of the album.” “Shape Of You” and “Castle On The Hill” have also made chart history in Sheeran’s native UK, debuting at #1 and #2, respectively,

THE BOUNTIFUL GOURMET

The Rex Is The Apex: We've noted this before: It's not enough to offer even simple fare without style; consumers (and the eateries that serve them) have learned that they'd much rather have “delcious” than “inexpensive” – it's why Shake Shack is still drawing lines, and why McDonald's is having trouble drawing even flies. However, it's always been our credo that smaller – and local – is better, and now Mineola has been blessed with The Rex Burger & Lobster (524 Jericho Turnpike, in the same shopping center as Panera Bread, Luigi's Pizza, and Chipotle; (516) REX-BRGR or (516) 739-2747; therexburgerandlobster.com). Open only since mid-December, the new restaurant's charter is simple: “It's fine food meets fast dining,” and it's truth in advertising; a better headline we could not write. It's a limited menu, but that's the point of The Rex – and it's already pleasing those have stopped by, some out of curiosity after picking up a roll of gauze or some milled soap at the Harmon Drug at the end of the shopping center.

If you haven't experienced it, it doesn't sound like much: Walk in past a wellstocked wine and beer bar (!), and make your order from the menu. You're given a placard with a number (similar to the method at Luigi's, which by the way has been beautifully renovated), and you take any seat you choose. A few moments later, your beverage choices are delivered, and before you can finish arguing about whether Lucas Duda should be resigned by the Mets, here's your burger and The Rex: Merging The Old

making him the first artist to land the top spots with two new tracks in that country. Remarkably, the two songs have outsold the rest of the UK singles chart Top 20 combined. Similarly, in Australia, Sheeran has become the first artist to have simultaneous debuts at #1 and #2; the songs also hold the #1 and #2 positions in New Zealand, Germany, Switzerland, France and Ireland. Both singles have already been certified Gold in the UK, Australia, and Ireland. “Shape Of You” also continues to break global streaming records on Spotify, including biggest “one-day” streams for a track ever.

Honest Restaurant Reviews lobster rolls. No snark here: The food is terrific – and original. What is pictured here is the what you get when you order The Rex Burger, a pair of cooked-to-order Angus burgers, served with an array of luscious toppings (including “Rex sauce,” $8.95). It's an original presentation which is savory and worthwhile, unlike the french fries, served with an array of creamy dipping sauces – but we mean the second statement as a compliment. The fries here rival such famed NYC choices as Box Frites or Rue 57; the combination of fresh potato flavor with the unexpected bite (or mellowness) of the sauces make them a must-try. That was our meal, and raves over the chicken sandwich and lobster rolls are also coming fast – but it's the friendly atmosphere, cleanliness, and overall charm that pushes The Rex to the forefront of Long Island burgerdom, and heaven knows there's a lot of competition. All in all, The Rex isn't just lunch; it's an experience that's as pleasant as it is calorically decadent. Good Times Magazine - February 7 - 20, 2017 • 7

Although Raines played for the Yankees from 1996 through 1998, he was best known for his years as a speedy outfielder for The Montreal Expos in a playing career that lasted parts of 23 seasons. Raines was a victim of ownership collusion when he decided to become a free agent at the end of the 1986 season. No club made him an offer, so he was basically forced to re-sign with the Expos. play until May 1, 1987 in accordance with the collective bargaining rules at the time. Sure enough, on his first day back the Expos were playing the New York Mets at Shea Stadium, and the longtime Mets killer didn’t disappoint as he got four hits including a triple and a grand slam. Raines was diplomatic when asked about his recollections of that period: “Well, I was hoping to test my market value, but I always wanted to return to Montreal.” Falling just short of the qualifying 75 percent vote were longtime San Diego Padres closer Trevor Hoffman, and the aforementioned slugger Guerrero, who both should be shoo-ins for induction in 2018. What was most perplexing was the continued lack of support for relief pitcher Lee Smith, who tallied only 34 percent of the vote. Most surprising about the balloting was the news that New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada received less than five percent of votes in his first year on the ballot, and thus won’t be back on it in the future. Like Don Mattingly, Posada was a borderline candidate, and many pro and con arguments can be made for him with respect to a plaque in 600 series and above for women and youth. He began his march to the title on Saturday by throwing a string of six strikes in eliminating Barnes, the 2015 DHC PBA Japan Invitational winner. Get all the latest pro bowling news at pba.com.

Jorge executive producer. Posada ESPN’s “30 for 30" documentary

On The Eighth Day God Created Baseball (Habanero Publishing), where he recalls the anguish of giving up the Game 5 ninth-inning home run to Chris Chambliss in 1976 that sent the Yankees to the World Series. Littell also details how he nearly started a riot in Cleveland when an errant throw in the bullpen nailed an elderly women in the noggin in the stands. While it’s not Ball Four, it is a light, fun read that will bring back memories. Alex Rodriguez has earned critical praise for his work on Fox Sports’ national baseball telecasts, and he’ll also host a new show for CNBC, “Back In The Game,” about retired athletes who find themselves in financial peril and want to regain the financial security they once enjoyed. Michael Strahan is the

series always utilizes top-flight directors and talent to tell sports stories in dignified manner. The latest in the series, “This Was The XFL,” continued that tradition. In the spring of 2001, World Wrestling Entertainment CEO Vince McMahon created an eight-team spring pro football league called The XFL, whose games were broadcast on NBC and TNN. McMahon promised the public that the XFL would not be “sissy football,” and to drive that point home, fair catches were not allowed on punts. Needless to say, McMahon wasn’t going to divorce himself from the shtick that made WWE famous; he made sure that his sexy cheerleaders got as much TV time as possible. He also let players create their own nicknames and put them on the backs of their jerseys. The only problem was that the quality of the actual football sucked, as the only legitimate QB was an NFL journeyman named Tommy Maddox, who led The Los Angeles Xtreme to the XFL’s only championship as it folded in May 2001. “This Was The XFL” is directed by Charlie Ebersol – yes, his dad is legendary NBC Sports executive Dick Ebersol, who was responsible for giving the XFL $50 million for both broadcasting rights and an equity stake. The documentary makes it clear that NBC was smarting at its

recent loss of the NFL, and it was a key factor in their decision to invest in this doomed football startup. Charlie Ebersol was able to get both his dad and Vince McMahon to go on camera and issue mea culpas. He also included was a ton of humorous material. This is one of the best sports documentaries of the last five years. With all due respect to New York Islanders interim head coach Doug Weight, who replaced Jack Capuano, the team would be better off if it did not make the playoffs. That would propel the new majority owners of the team, Jon Ledecky and Scott Malkin, to finally get rid of the incompetent GM Garth Snow, who has been at the helm for the last 11 years, and start turning things around.

early Genesis concerts, The Musical Box, the only band licensed and supported by Genesis and Peter Gabriel, performed close to 1,000 concerts in front of of more than one million audience members in some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including as The Royal Albert Hall in London and The Olympia in Paris. For this tour, The Musical Box is performing an exact replica of the 1973 show and tour than ran concurrently with the release of Selling England By The Pound – including lights, sets, elaborate costumes, effects, and even original slides. The members of this French-Canadian tribute band are François Gagnon (acoustic and electric guitars), Sébastien Lamothe (bass, bass pedals, acoustic and electric guitars, vocals), Denis Gagné (lead vocals, flute, oboe, percussion), Marc Laflamme (drums, percussion, vocals), and Guillaume Rivard (keyboards, 12-string guitar, vocals).

How faithful is this recreation of early Genesis? Two members of the legendary prog-rock band seemingly could not be more impressed: “I saw them in Bristol with my children so they could see what their father did back then,” said Genesis original lead singer, Peter Gabriel. “They're not a tribute band,” enthused Phil Collins, the Genesis drummer who took over lead singing duties after Gabriel left the band during the 1970s. “The have taken a period and are faithfully reproducing it in the same way someone would do a theatrical production.”

ff Book/Out of Bounds brings iconic show tunes – electrified – to Staller Center’s Recital Hall at Stony Brook University on Sunday, February 19 at 7 pm. The four-member rock band known as The Brooklyn Rundfunk Orkestrata (BRO), joined by three singers, riffs on 100 years worth of songs from the musical theater songbook. The Brooklyn Rundfunk Orkestrata is led by Peter Kiesewalter, who notes: “The show is a history of music for the theater using today’s musical vocabulary (rock, jazz, funk, soul, bluegrass, etcetera). We’ll play Broadway hits written before 1960, but play them as though they were written today. We play 'Climb Every Mountain' from The Sound Of Music as if interpreted by Mary J. Blige, or 'Put On A Happy Face' from Bye Bye Birdie as an electrofunk tune. We will also go way back in time and play the music from the roots of American musical theater which is European opera – Mozart and Puccini as if Queen or Led

Orkestrata garnered media attention for its adaptations of the songs from The Sound Of Music. Initially amazed that the notoriously protective Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization not only permitted the project but gave it a public endorsement, music writers quickly became enamored with the music itself – highly inventive arrangements, thrillingly delivered, irony-free, by some of New York City’s most in-demand musicians and singers. Currently, Kiesewalter is working on a new album with his four-piece band Brooklyn Rundfunk Orkestrata (BRO). Tickets to this show are $42. Visit stallercenter.com or call (631) 632-ARTS [2787].

An In-Depth Look At The Hottest Area Artists

Kristina Rocco

‘Just Be Glad’ Is Another Milestone

Who: The Long Islandbased singer/songwriter Kristina Rocco is back, this time with a new album, Just Be Glad, which was released nationally on January 24. Rocco is nothing if not prolific; she's released a myraid of discs during the past few years, some solo (This Much, Then & Now, The Tower, Live Birthday Celebration, and more) and others as a member of The Roccos (The Roccos, Oil & Clay, The Way Home, Bird On the Line, Trail Of Stones). Rocco also has a YouTube channel featuring several of her songs, and performs regularly at music venues in Long Island and New York City. The Artist & Her Sound: From her official bio: “In a word: Passion. The last few years of singer/songwriter Kristina Rocco's life have been anything but ordinary; between her day job as a local high school teacher, a loving wife, the director of plays including Young Frankenstein The Musical, a working vocalist (who has performed more than 50 live shows regionally since 2015), and a recording artist, Kristina isn't taking any breaks. “Her latest studio album, Just Be Glad (produced and co-written by her husband, Michael J. Rocco, and released on New Frame Records), encompasses a range of haunting vocals backed by her acoustic rock band. The opening track 'Lights Out' immediately establishes the strong female persona of a woman who refuses to back down to anyone. Other tracks include 'It's Not Real,' a lyrically based song dedicated to those suffering from mental illness. The title track, 'Just Be Glad,' softens things up as an emotionally driven hymn inspiring us all to remain grateful despite life's challenges. “Packaged with cover art by Johanna Szleszynski, "Just Be Glad" is a fitting expression of the time we live in. As always, The Roccos are continuing their live performances in 2017... while hinting at beginning a new musical project.” To Learn More Or To Contact The Artist: The new album is available virtually everywhere music is sold, as both CDs and downloads; log on to kristinarocco.com for upcoming show dates. 22 • Good Times Magazine - February 7 - 20, 2017

Still On Top: Hip hop remains dominant in the music world. There are numerous reasons why it has remained on top, but there's an obvious one: MTV. Once the network hit the airwaves, it became the “trend-icator” – new wave, Michael Jackson's Thriller, the rebirth of rock bands (Loverboy, Bon Jovi), Madonna and her clones, hair metal bands and Guns ’ N Roses, grunge, the rebirth of bubble gum (Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys) ... and then hip hop. MTV and its coast-to-coast captive audience made it happen, but what came next was unexpected: Music was gone from MTV, replaced by reality shows. Hip hop was the last national music trend generated by MTV, but since it took over, and nothing was ever presented as “the big next thing” to take its place. Since its coming of age, hip hop has been the dominant factor in pop culture. My favorite new TV show is "Star" on Fox, the saga of a girl group led by a hyper-agressive lead vocalist that will do anything to make it. She's already been singled out by wags to be a solo star; it’s like a modern day

Mott The Hoople

Supremes tribute show. Other characters include an emotionally unbalanced Florence Ballard type who has already had a near-death experience after only a month's worth of episodes. The show from which "Star" sprang, "Empire," continues to

dominate the ratings and enjoys success with a series of soundtrack album releases featuring music from the show (shades of “The Monkees”). Regardless of the cultural changes, there can be no denying that hip hop has firmly planted itself at the center of pop music, having evolved from the early days of raw R&B, soul, and Motown, with beatnik-inspired poetry thrown into the mix. Stars Pass: As for rock music,

Photo: Star courtesy Fox

Star’s Jude Demorest

there are more memorials and RIPs, and the latest two come from opposite ends of the genre’s spectrum: Butch Trucks, the drummer for The Allman Brothers Band, and Overend Watts, the bassist for Mott The Hoople (which still tragically remains ignored by The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame). Trucks was a hardnosed, countryinfluenced blues man, and someone with whom I recently had a Facebook disagreement. The other, Watts, was a glitter/glam Mainman era legend. The great thing is that fans still recognize these names and remember them – and that’s something that whatever is left of new rock bands can't boast about. The star power shifted over to pop and hip hop and remains there. Will the street-driven power of rock & roll ever find its way back to a major platform?

The Dropkick Murphys’ new album, 11 Short Stories Of Pain & Glory, went straight to #1 on the iTunes charts after its January 6 release. The band has also shared the official video for its song “Paying My Way,” now with thousands of views on YouTube. “'Paying My Way’ is not just about paying your bills,” explained singer Ken Casey. “It’s about doing what you

But at the end of the day, never losing sight of the fact that doing the next right thing may lead to great things one day.” The band will headline The Paramount in Huntington on March 12 in a show that was already listed as “sold out” on the band's website. Ashley Riley:

Americana With Soul

Independent Americana/indie star Ashley Riley is set to release a seven-song EP, Can't Let You Go, on March 3. For 2016's Through The Thin, Riley and her

Dropkick Murphys

band recorded about 22 songs. It was in going back through those songs and other recordings that had been whittled away from previous records that Riley began to realize she had the makings of an EP. “All of the songs were born out of other sessions,” she said. “They

didn't quite fit the other projects I've put out because they had more of an alt-country flair than the majority of what I was doing at the time, but to me they were still beautiful and songs and started taking those pieces and fitting them together. It just made sense to re-record them and release them together as an EP.”
