Winter may be here, but there’s no reason to stay cooped up indoors – there’s so many things to do close to home, including weekend getaways, hikes, ice skating, skateboarding, cultural events, and wine tastings. Recently, Discover Long Island and area businesses keyed us in on what’s hot in cool climes – and you don’t have to leave Nassau or Suffolk to have a wealth of cold weather fun. Love #@%##?!: We found this so refreshing we just had to lead off this edition of the column with it: Since the drug and department stores have been filled with Valentine's Day candy and gifts since all the back on December 26, it's nice to know there's some realism out there. In their New York Times bestseller, F*ck Feelings (2015), psychiatrist and APA Distinguished Fellow Michael Bennett, MD and his comedy-writing daughter, Sarah Bennett, offered practical solutions for dealing with life’s problems in a funny, straightforward, and very un-self-help book. Now, they’re bringing back their patented blunt and hilarious advice to talk about love and relationships with F*ck Love: One Shrink’s Sensible Advice For Finding A Lasting Relationship (Touchstone, available January 31). In the book, the Bennetts explain why we so often find ourselves in relationships that don’t work. Most relationships that fail, it turns out, end because the two people were fundamentally wrong for each other in the first place. However, those incompatibilities were wrapped around a cocoon of excitement, lust, charisma, beauty, humor, and feelings. The Bennetts will sign copies of F*ck Love on February 9 at 7 pm at powerHuuse Arena in Brooklyn, where they'll be in conversation with Slate editor-in-chief Julia Turner … More realism: The Holocaust Memorial And Tolerance Center of Nassau Barney County (HMTC) will present Max Ross Baer and Barney Ross: Jewish Heroes Of Boxing, a lecture and book-signing by author Jeffrey Sussman, on Sunday, February 26 at 2 pm at at the Center in Glen Cove. This new book is about two champions of boxing in the 1920s and 1930s who were an inspiration for Jewish fans across the country and throughout the world. The book paints an evocative picture of boxing and the crucial role it played in an era of rising anti-semitism. Though they came from totally different backgrounds – Baer grew up on his family’s ranch in California, while Ross, who grew up in an Orthodox family, roamed the tough streets of Chicago and was a runner for Al Capone – both became boxing champions. In the book, Sussman discusses how Baer fought Hitler’s favorite boxer, Max Schmeling, in 1933 in front of 60,000 people at Yankee Stadium in Bronx, NY while wearing boxing shorts adorned with a Jewish star. Barney Ross had a trilogy of bouts with Jimmy McLarnin, who was known as “the Jew Killer” for all the Jewish boxers he had defeated. Ross, whose real name was Rosofsky, beat McLarnin in their first encounter, lost to him in the second, and won in the third. McLarnin’s manager was so upset by the final decision that he sued Ross and his managers, claiming undo Jewish meddling in the decision. The case was laughed out of court. Sussman is the author of 11 non-fiction books; there is a suggested donation of $10 for this event. e’s larger-than life – and thankfully, five times as funny: Artie Lange returns to Long Island on Saturday, February 11 at 8 pm at The Space At Westbury Theater. Tickets are now on sale, log on to ticketmaster.com for your passes and more information. There’s not much he hasn’t done: Lange has been a comedian, actor, writer, producer,

being cast in opposite Norm MacDonald in the MGM feature film Dirty Work. This lead to a string of feature films including New Line’s The Bachelor starring opposite Chris O’Donnell and Renee Zellweger; Lost & Found with David Spade for Warner Brothers; Kinka Usher’s Mystery Men; and the independent drama The Fourth Floor, opposite Juliette Lewis and William Hurt. Lange also had supporting roles in the Dreamworks feature film Old School and New Line Cinema’s Elf. The highwater mark of Lange’s film career came when he starred in, cowrote, and produced his own feature film, Beer League. Lange is a favorite on the talk show circuit; he was a regular guest on “The Late Show with David Letterman” and “The Best Damn Sports Show, Period.” These days, he turns up on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Lange has been a guest roaster on Comedy Central’s roasts as well.

entreprneur, and radio personality. He’s currently the co-host of “The Artie Lange Show,” a Fox News radio show that he created, and one that’s generated rave reviews and a massive fan base. Lange was a regular on “The Howard Stern Show” for five years, and during that time his first memoir, Too Fat To Fish, became a New York Times best seller – paving the way for his second book, Crash And Burn, published in 2013. Lange’s first TV standup hourlong special, The Stench Of Failure, premiered on Comedy Central in October 2014. Lange began his career in the comedy clubs of New York City, where he helped to create the popular sketch comedy group Live On Tape after writing and performing with other troupes including Midnight Madness and The Improvables. Lange’s breakout work with Live On Tape landed him his debut television role as one of the original series regulars on Fox’s “Mad TV.” His success on that show led to him

FILM xXx:

The Return Of Xander Cage

Starring Vin Diesel, Samuel L. Jackson, Toni Collette, Nina Dobrev, Deepika Padukone, Ruby Rose Skotchdopole, Tony Jaa, Al Sapienza, Andrey Ivchenko, Donnie Yen Directed by D.J. Caruso Paramount This third installment of the xXx franchise (if we can use the term for such a slight series of films) is really an unusual happenstance, and for a variety of reasons: The film is being released worldwide by different distributors; in foreign countries, it's a big deal thanks to its international cast (Deepika Padukone and Tony Jaa, particularly); and it's the latest attempt by star and co-producer Vin Diesel to keep his aging brand afloat, even as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has long passed the finish line as the #1 action film star. Yet, Diesel is a canny and intelligent actor, and he's helped assemble one of the most vibrant and attractive casts that's ever been assigned to a film centered on wild stunts and flying fists. We were prepared to really lambast this sequel based on many of the publicity stills alone; Diesel usually looks either bemused or confused (see our photo), and all we could predict is that this was a thrown-together hodgepodge that would please only those that would wander into a mallplex looking to while

away an hour and a half inbetween watching the Macy's next door getting boarded up. However, as film snobs, we totally forgot: The original xXx earned a whopping $277 million back in 2002, which means a whole lot of people are into it. After checking out this new film, we can see why: Diesel's character, the utterly fearless government operative Xander Cage, was always meant to be a modern take on the James Bond style, but with more abs and ink. Shockingly, Diesel, at 49, can still pull off the task, fighting the baddies and making the ladies swoon – and on that note, the female characters here are all strong, independent women who are a lot more than just eye candy, a nice change from the hackneyed spy style; Collette and Dobrev are perfectly cast in their roles. In this new installment, Cage assembles a

rockin' crew to do battle with the evil Xiang (Yen), all to recover Pandora's Box, a new age weapon that could cause a really big mess since it controls every communications satellite. Of course, there more than meets the eye, including government corruption and a whole lot of lyin'. Of course, it's the action that counts: There's a memorably intense motorcycle scene, and more explosions and martial arts exhibitions than you can count. But it works – possibly because Diesel is crazy like a fox, and realizes that pure, unbridled escapism still has its place, particularly these days.

New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles received his best gift after Christmas as the Buffalo Bills decided to fire Rex Ryan the Tuesday before the last game of the season when the Jets would meet the Bills at MetLife

Stadium. Bills’ players, knowing that the game was meaningless and that they would soon be having a new head coach, Rex basically did not show up as they were Ryan pulverized by the Jets, 30-10. Keep in mind that the 2016 Jets were lucky to get by the dregs of the NFL, the Browns and the 49ers, by a margin of three points in each game, and they had to come from behind each time. Jets wide receiver Quincy Enunwa, one of the team’s few bright spots this year, admitted following the Bills game that whenever you hear NFL players talking about playing for pride, it really means “give me my paycheck and I’ll try my best not to get hurt.” The Bills’ decision to jettison Ryan clearly gave an incentive to Jets owner Woody Johnson to bring back Bowles for the 2017 season. Johnson fired Ryan two years ago, and he now had proof that he made the right decision. Keeping Bowles while Ryan is now out of work has to make Johnson feel like a winner after a very long losing season.

It’s hard to tell who had a worse New Year’s weekend: Mariah Carey or Ronda Rousey. Former NBA head coach George Karl received some negative advance press for knocking some of his former players in his new and cleverly titled autobiography, Furious George: My Forty Years Surviving NBA Divas, Clueless Gms, And Poor Shot Selection (Harper). Yes, he calls out a lot of players for being immature, wanting the spotlight to themselves, and not playing defense because they feel that it doesn’t help them get fatter contracts. After reading the book, the only place where I thought that he may have crossed a line without having any empirical proof was when he stated that both Carmelo Anthony and Kenyon Martin had issues because they grew up without fathers, while Karl was fortunate enough to grow up in a nuclear family just outside of Pittsburgh. For the most part, Furious George is a fun read as Karl talks about his various battles with management and the reasons behind his many dismissals. On a more serious note, he spends

a lot of time warning readers not to make the gastronomical mistakes that he made, which he believes made him more susceptible to not just heart disease but a key reason that he

optonline.net. Ronnie What The Pros Russell Use: It's always interesting to learn (and sometimes emulate) what professional bowlers do; it's still a safe bet that a serious bowler watching a top star on ESPN will no doubt inquire to the brand and model of balls her or she uses. In that light, Ebonite International – the manufacturers of the Hammer, Ebonite, Columbia 300, and Track brands – recently announced new endorsees for its products. PBA star Ronnie Russell has been signed to Ebonite's national pro staff. Russell has four standard PBA tiles to his credit, as well a spot on Team USA in 2016 and doubles and team gold medals in the 2016 PABCON Championships. Russell noted the Ebonite brand's long history in the bowling industry: "I signed with Ebonite because I feel the product will give me a chance to compete at the highest level on the PBA Tour with such a wide variety (of equipment) to choose from," he said. "Ebonite is the backbone of bowling. When I hear the name Ebonite, I hear class, tradition and success. Earl Anthony, Jason Couch, and Tommy Jones have all had great influence in making the brand what it is today." "Signing a player of Russell's caliber only further solidifies the Ebonite brand tagline of 'where champions are made',” said Rob Gotchall, manager of players, events and

promotions for Ebonite International. “We look forward to seeing his continued success on tour.” In addition, Columbia 300 has signed Jakob Butturff to its national pro staff. Butturff, a young lefty, has two standard PBA tour titles to his name; the record for most regional titles (nine) won in a single season; and a win in the 2015 New Mexico Open. Butturff said he had a lot of success with Ebonite International Equipment growing up. "I threw a lot of EBI in junior bowling and shot a decent amount of honor scores and hope to continue that success as an adult bowler now," Tommy Butturff said. Jones "Most of those honor scores came from the Columbia 300 brand … I was a huge fan of the Smackdown and the Eruption and Noize lines. Now, it means a lot to be able to become a part of this company and brand."

The reason that the game was relocated was the understandable fear that Japan would launch an invasion of the California coast in light of our Pacific Fleet being crippled from the attack three weeks earlier. In addition to reviewing the game, Curtis gives a follow-up to how each player served in WWII, and what the survivors did after they returned home at the war’s end. ESPN ended speculation about the future of one of its signature personalities, Chris Berman, by announcing that he would leave

Run Derby. Berman will continues to do taped bits for the network and serve in an emeritus role. It is surprising that Fox Sports 1, which has raided Bristol for a lot of talent in the past year, did not make a serious play for Berman. The Consumer Electronic Show (CES) has grown beyond just being the showcase for the latest gizmos. Turner Sports held a “Sports Business Innovation” seminar at this year’s confab, in which executives discussed the success of their electronic sports/video game competition, ELeague, which has attracted the attention of advertisers that believe that it’s a great platform to reach millennials. Basketball stars Grant Hill and Sue Bird were panelists at the seminar; Hill decried how players now check their smart phones at halftime instead of talking to each other about the game, while Bird said that he has learned how any casual remark made in social media can be quickly blown out of proportion. The New York Mets player who will get the most attention at their spring training minor league camp in Port St. Lucie won’t be Tim Tebow – it will be shortstop Amed Rosario, who graced the cover of the first Baseball America issue of 2017. Hopefully, as prospects go, he will be more like Derek Jeter and less like Gregg Jefferies. New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist

was yanked from a few games, but anyone who believes he is over the hill should have been in Philadelphia earlier this month when he stopped a barrage of Flyers shots in a 5-2 win. The Rangers are celebrating their 90th anniversary, while The Philadelphia Flyers are commemorating their 50th. Jay Greenberg has written an excellent book on the onetime “Broad Street Bullies,” The Flyers At 50 (Triumph Books). By the way, the Flyers home arena, The Wells Fargo Center, is celebrating its 20th anniversary, and it’s still one of the nicest places to view an NHL game.

Reina At Resorts World (Queens)

Resorts World Casino (Queens): To celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year, a Chinese calligraphy exhibition by Chinese artists from The Ninegrid Culture Innovation will be shown at the

Casinos & Resorts

Resorts World Casino Red Wall Art Gallery through this month. The exhibit opened on January 9, and is presented in collaboration with Jamaica Center for Art and Learning.

Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes At Tropicana (AC)

On Saturday, January 28 from 11 am to 1 pm, artists Liu Yunqiang and Sheng Xinde will demonstrate the calligraphy writing and give away the spring scroll, a Lunar New Year tradition. Most recently, The Red Wall Art Gallery featured oil paintings completed by residents of The Pomonok Senior Center in Flushing. Past exhibits have also included the photography of former Queens Borough President photographer Dominick Totino, and the quilting of local Queens artists. The Red Wall Art Gallery is located on the Times Square and Fifth Avenue levels of Resorts

World Casino New York City. Also coming to Resorts World is an array of top area bands, including Drive, a Cars tribute, on January 25; and 2 Fresh on January 27. National headliners on the schedule include dance, pop, and freestyle sensation Reina on January 27. Get the full scoop at rwnewyork.com. Tropicana (AC): “The Trop” never stops this month and in February, with a full docket of entertainment offerings: Among the attractions are Violin Femmes starring Bella Electric Strings, led by rock violinist and arranger Nina DiGregorio, performing the biggest hits of AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Who, and more on January 28; The Valentine's Soul Jam on February 11, featuring a lineup of legends including Harold Melvin's Blue Notes, The Dramatics Featuring L.J. Reynolds, The Intruders, and Russell Thompkins, Jr. & The New Stylistics; and the debut of Ring Of Combat 58, Lou Neglia's MMA promotion, on February 24. Tickets for these and all future events are on sale at ticketmaster.com or at the Tropicana box office. Mohegan Sun (PA): A bit closer to home, Mohegan Sun Pocono offers an array of standup stars in Scott Bruce, Peyton Clarkson, and Brian McFadden on January 27 and 28 in the popular Wise Crackers Comedy Club; and the wild and wacky Shorty Long & The Jersey Horns, a huge favorite by the shore, on January 28. Learn more about these shows and get the scoop on winter entertainment highlights at mohegansunpocono.com.

STUDIO NEWS

Nonstop To Cairo

Here's wishing a happy (and prosperous) New Year to the rehearsal and recording studios, audio professionals, and musicians who keep Long Island and Queens rocking year after year. In that light, here's our first compendium of studio news for 2017: It’s the talk of the area: The jam-packed album release show for Nonstop To Cairo’s new album, Dabble Heavy, was a wall-to-wall sellout at Amityville Music Hall on January 13. The new album was produced, engineered, and mixed by Tom Stiegler at BlokHed Studios in Deer Park; the longtime musician and music professional is beaming over the results. The album was mastered by Ted Jensen, who has worked on scores of national releases by everyone from The Eagles to Green Day. “I’m just so proud of this album,” said Stiegler. “I’m really passionate

In 2015, he travelled to Cremona, Italy to attend John Monteleone's Master Classes in Guitar Making, reawakening his passion in the craft and art as a luthier. An In-Depth Look At The Hottest Area Artists

Eve Minor

‘OMG’: She’s A Star On The Verge

Who: Three years ago, we highlighted singer/songwriter and producer Eve Minor in this spot; two years ago, we got to know her quite well, as she contributed articles and assistance to us here at Good Times. These days, she's working as a professional in the New York City music scene – and from all accounts, is about to break out in a big way as an artist. Recently, the blonde stunner issued two clips via YouTube (both directed by Matt Prager), the pop-tinged yet-naughty “Piggy Bank,” and “OMG,” which already has the hip hop community in a daze. Minor, who has also dabbled as a model, isn't shy about her feminine pulchritude (or unbridled lyrics), so it's R-rated “parental advisory” time, kids – yet, Minor shows a mastery of both melody and mood in both songs, which stick in the head like the best the pop world has to offer. At press time, Minor was at work recording a new hip hop/R&B album, with the working title Shooting Stars, at Sabella Studios in Roslyn Heights; she's also announced a spring tour of the east coast and the midwest, with concert dates to be determined. There's even more: Minor's name has been bandied about by some of hip hop's biggest names, and there may be a working announcement about projects with some of the genre's biggest stars in the months ahead. Minor has received a wealth of praise in recent weeks from various music media sources; DS Radio proclaimed her “the female Rick James,” and similar plaudits have come from ThisIs50.com and AudibleAddixion.com. To Learn More About The Artist: Minor owns social media in a big way; find her at eveminor.com, and also at Twitter, Instagram, and on her artist page at SoundCloud. Her music can be heard at Spotify as well. 22 • Good Times Magazine - January 24 - February 6, 2017

Mariah's Harsh Holiday: I had to get up early on New Year's Day, so I had the feeling that I should set up the DVR to record ABC's “New Year's Rockin Eve." I've never missed the annual show since the 1970s, when Dick Clark created and hosted this alternative to what, back then, was the massively successful CBS New Year's Eve broadcast with The Guy Lombardo Orchestra that had been a tradition since the birth of national television in the 1950s. Mariah Since Carey “New Year's Rockin' Eve” is live, you never know what might happen, and, as a pop culture junkie, I have to see everything. Add to that the reasonable belief that one never knows what to expect from Mariah Carey, so I had no option but to set up the DVR and go to sleep. I woke up New Years' Day, clicked on News Radio 1010 WINS, and the first thing I heard was "Mariah Meltdown In Front Of A Million People." I smiled; I just had a feeling the night before, and have seen her do this before, but not ever on such a large scale. She was going to sing "Emotions," one of her many #1 hit singles, with dancers, an earpiece to hear the recorded track, and the recorded track itself with her vocal on it. Of the three, the only thing that worked was the dancers – and boy, did they have

to work. While performing their moves, they surrounded her as she came to the realization that the vocal track was missing and she would have to sing live with a hand held mic. It didn't help, as we were later told, that she didn't show up earlier or the day before for a sound check; she reportedly had sent a “body double” (?) in her place. From all accounts, Carey does not sing without her vocal track to sing along with, and we all know what followed: Telling the audience to sing; the tantrum face and body language; parading aimlessly as if amnesia had just set in; and, eventually, storming off the stage. A theory later emerged that, since she has a new reality series, "Mariah's World" on cable TV, that this was a great publicity stunt that would lead people to watch that show out of curiosity. Is it possible? I've been in the business long enough to raise an arched eyebrow whenever anything like this happens, and that's the wonder of live TV events – you can't re-do or edit something that's live. As a diehard Supremes fan, I still yearn to see the push-andshove moment between Diana Ross and Mary Wilson on the "Motown 25" NBC special from the early 80s, but that show was taped and edited accordingly – otherwise, like the Mariah moment, it would have made for some great TV. Happy New Year!

BITS & PIECES Julie Byrne

Julie Byrne:

She’s ‘Living As A Singer’

New York-based singer/songwriter Julie Byrne recently unleashed "I Live Now As A Singer," the closing track from her upcoming album, Not Even Happiness. "I Live Now As A Singer" is Byrne's first song to even be recorded without a guitar on the track. Byrne's new album, Not Even Happiness, is a more confident beast than her debut that adds atmospheric instrumentation and electronic flourishes to Byrne's unusual guitar tunings and fingerpicked melodies, moving the songs from the front-porch into subtle anthemia. Not Even Happiness is available for pre-order now, and due out January 27 via Ba Da Bing Records. Byrne has also announced a record release show this month at Rough Trade NYC in Brooklyn. Get the scoop at juliemariebyrne.com or find her at social media.

They're back: Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductees Red Hot Chili Peppers kicked off their 2017 North American tour on January 5 at The AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas. The 51-city trek in support of their latest album, The Getaway, which was released by Warner Bros. Records on June 17, includes an already sold-out three-night stand at Madison Square Garden in New York City during February. The Getaway debuted at #1 on the Billboard Album Sales Chart and at #2 on the Billboard Top 200 upon its release in June. The Getaway marks the Grammy Award-winning band's seventh Top 10 album and third #2 on the Top 200 Chart. The album debuted at #1 in Australia, Belgium, Ireland, Netherlands, and New Zealand, and at #2 in the United Kingdom and

perform their own soulful brand of music while remaining true to their roots. New York-based Sage has released 12 albums of eclectic originals on her own label, MPress Records, and will join Hart for just over a dozen dates beginning in Atlanta, Georgia and ending in Kent, Ohio. For Sage, it will be a particular thrill to share the stage with Hart, whose powerful voice she first discovered via

the Off-Broadway show Love, Janis: “I was absolutely blown away by her presence and her incredibly passionate vocals,” said Sage. “From that point forward I’ve followed her career with enormous respect.”

The Shins:

Back In March

Following their October release of Dead Alive, The Shins will release their fifth studio album, Heartworms, on March 10 via Aural Apothecary/Columbia Records. In contrast to 2012’s Port Of Morrow, which debuted at #3 in Billboard and was nominated for a Best Alternative Album Grammy Award, Heartworms ushers in a return to the handmade. Heartworms is entirely written by James Mercer; with the exception of “So Now What” (produced by Richard Swift), Heartworms is the first Shins album to be self-produced by Mercer since Oh, Inverted World in 2001. The record will be supported by a world tour, on which Mercer will be joined by Yuuki Matthews (bass), Jon Sortland (drums), Mark Watrous (guitar, keys, vocals), Casey Foubert (guitar), and Patti King (keys). Get tour date and more (they're coming to Brooklyn in June) at theshins.com.
