t will be a night of Spandex, hits, and memories as The Back to the Eighties Show featuring Jessie’s Girl headlines on Friday, January 20 at 8 pm at The Paramount in Huntington; the coveted “Founder’s Room Afterparty” applies for this performance. Tickets are now on sale; log on to paramountny.com for information. Now, our only editorial statement: We lived through the 1980s, and we never saw a band that looked like Jessie’s Girl – but if you’re looking for a stylized, over-the-top, romanticized version of what the decade’s pop music scene was like (think a Rock Of Ages vibe), you’ve found your show. Jessie’s Girl has done

pretty much the impossible during the past few years as its become a tribute band that’s been a hit in such top Manhattan venues as Le Poisson Rouge, drawing some critical raves along the way. The show features renditions of many ’80s pop songs, while the musicians and singers dress up as the unforgettable characters of that decade; Bon Jovi, Cindi Lauper, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince, and more artists to life right before the crowd. It’s theatre meets live music smothered in ’80s glitz. Jessie’s Girl’s primary lineup includes a team of seasoned New York City rock and pop vocalists, including frontwoman Jenna O’Gara,

LI’s Classic Rock Legends Return To Mulcahy’s

Zebra – the legendary, Long Island-based trio that still features its classic lineup, and still rocks as hard as it ever has – returns to Mulcahy’s Pub & Concert Hall in Wantagh with a contemporary from their heyday, the legendary Vixen, who are basically still headliners but now serving as openers for this special night. Tickets are now on sale; log on to clubloaded.com or call “Mul’s” at (516) 783-7500. . It’s rare that Zebra makes a area major venue appearance, and this time, it’s for a special reason: Billed as a Hammerheads reunion in honor of the club where both headliners cut their teeth, at this performance Zebra will person its legendary debut album in its entirety, form the first cut to the last – an epic work that includes such hits as “Who’s Behind The Door,” “Tell Me What You Want,” and “Slow Down.” Clearly, Zebra will remain one of the area’s favorite bands as long as it chooses to continue to ply its trade. Bursting onto the scene in the 1980s and scoring a long string of FM radio hits including “Tell Me What You Want,” “Why,” and “Who’s Behind the Door,” the band – Jackson (guitars and vocals), Felix Hanemann (bass, keyboards, and vocals) and

Off-Broadway’s Chris Hall, and Sting impersonator Mark Rinzel, with frequent appearances by Broadway’s Constantine Maroulis, the Tony-nominated star of Rock Of Ages and an “American Idol” finalist. They’re backed by a band comprised of veterans of the New York City music scene: Eric Presti on guitar, Sky on keys, Drew Mortali on bass, and Michael Maenza on drums – each with dozens of credits performing with the actual 80s icons who made the music famous. A trivia tidbit: Actual hitmakers of the era, including Bret Michaels, MC Hammer, Colin Hay, Tiffany, Taylor Dane, Debbie Gibson, Mike Score, Rob Base, Tone

Loc, and others have performed live at The Back To The 80s Show. It’s established that Jessie’s Girl is one of the hardest working bands around, and their reach extends beyond New York City; their weeks are filled with high-profile appearances and private events around the US. They’ve brough The Back To The 80s Show to ABC / NY Magazine’s recent launch party for “The Goldbergs”; a Halloween bash with Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx; a private birthday party for 80s icon Neil Patrick Harris; and Coca Cola / Buffalo Wild Wing’s massive “TableGate” event in Tempe, Arizona opening for Smashmouth. We’d wager that Long Island Fans will get into the spirit, and many Jessie’s Girl fans show up for their concerts wearing Spandex, tube tops, and head bands ready to rock the night away. loss to one of the NHL’s surprises this year, the Minnesota Wild, who won their 10th straight game in the process. The Wild game was the first Rangers home game that I attened in person in nearly three years. It’s a shame that the highlight was the terrific rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” turned in by Jermaine Paul, the winner of the second season of NBC’s “The Voice.” Paul was so good that the Garden crowd didn’t dare interrupt him with a “Let’s Go Rangers!” chant, as it typically does during the anthem. The Rangers looked rusty as they couldn’t pass, and too many of their shot attempts resembled baseball hitters’ foul balls. Still, the Rangers have had a good season

O’Quinn did not have a great 2015-16 campaign for the team, his first for them after signing as a free agent, but he is making the most out his second year. O'Quinn's timing couldn’t be better because the guy who starts at center in front of him, Joakim Noah – signed to the already-infamous four-year, $72 million contract – has struggled, and O'Quinn has done a fine job of picking up the slack in rebounding and scoring. A good case in point was when the Indiana Pacers

built a 15-point lead at MSG. O’Quinn did not singlehandedly alter the direction of the game, but his stabilizing work helped nibble away the deficit until Carmelo Anthony got hot and started draining three-point shots, while Derrick Rose ran by flat-footed Pacers guards at will in the fourth quarter as the Knicks won going away. The avalanche of celebrity deaths in 2016 initiated a lot of discussion on social media. Black Dog & Leventhal recently published books on the passing of famous folks in recent history: Where Are They Buried by Tod Benoit, and The New York Times Book Of The Dead: 320 Print And 10,000 Digital Obituaries Of Extraordinary People, edited by William McDonald. Both books contain sections on departed sports heroes.

Say Goodbye To 'Sex': As 2016 got down to its final few days, several TV series – including one that’s been a hit during the past few years – had been canceled. The most surprising new name on the list is Showtime's “Masters Of Sex,” which looked back at the lives of health researchers Masters & Johnson; there will be no season five, and the fourth season of the critically lauded series just ended its run. Other shows that will either soon be gone or are already toast are ABC Family's “Dead Of Summer,” ABC's “Conviction,” CBS' summer shows “Brain Dead” and “American Gothic,” and TNT's “Murder On The First.” Suddenly teetering after a successful summer run is CBS' “The Odd Couple”; according to reports, CBS isn't moving ahead with ordering a full 22episode season on the third year of the Matthew Perry and Thomas Lennon sitcom. Television wags are predicting a fourth season renewal is highly unlikely. We’re among Showtime’s the few that enjoyed this new Masters Of Sex version of the Neil Simon classic characters – yet, no one will ever top the 1970s series staring Jack Klugman and Tony Randall … More Showtime news: Emmy Rossum, one of Emmy Rossum cable TV’s biggest stars thanks to her role on the network’s hit “Shameless,” recently ended a salary dispute with the network that threatened to postpone producton on the series’ upcoming eighth season. Reportedly, Rossum had recieved a lower salary than co-billed William H. Macy throughout the run of the show ... It's amazing: 12 years after his last pro wrestling match, Bill Goldberg’s less-than two minute victory over Brock Lesnar at WWE's Survivor Series card on WWE Network on November 20 instantly made him the biggest star in the sport once again … The US Presidential election won by Donald Trump was good for news/talk cable stations as MSNBC, CNN, and Fox News all enjoyed high ratings; MSNBC, in particular, saw its ratings at higher Bill levels than ever, in some Goldberg cases more than 75 percent higher than the previous year … Most TV fans have seen the ubiquitous ads for My Pillow during the past few years; in November, the Minnesota-based company that distributes the product agreed to pay about $1 million in fines after being found by California consumer protection officials to have made unsubstantiated health claims in its ads. Jazz & Blues

Photo: The Duke Robillard Band by Laurene Robillard

New For You: The Duke Robillard Band knocks it out of the park with their new release, on Stony Plain Records, now available everywhere, including Looney Tunes in West Babylon. On the disc, Robillard and his crack band unleash 13 tight and taut rockin' blues tunes, displaying the veteran guitarist's mastery of every style from swing to funk – just like always. The disc includes The Duke Robillard Band guest appearances by “Sugar” Ray Norcia, Jimmie Vaughan, and Kelley Hunt. Danes' Day: It was against all odds that Anna Danes found herself standing in Capitol Records Studio A, in front of the same microphone used Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole, recording an a cappella song that she wrote for her sophomore album. The woman who escaped communist Poland as a child and overcame a loveless marriage by discovering her voice just three years ago poured her broken heart into the album closer, “I Love You,” for Find Your Wings, the DLG Anna Danes Records release. The album is completed by five standards and an interpretation of blues singer Janiva Magness’ “When You Were My King.” The new album is available wherever music is sold. The T-Birds Are Back: The Fabulous Thunderbirds honor their legendary blues and soul heroes on the album Strong Like That, now out on Severn Records. "I've always wanted my music to stand up to my heroes' music," said co-founder and harmonica great Kim Wilson, who pairs his own compositions alongside his heroes Clarence Coulter, Eddie Floyd, Eddie Holland, and Cornelius Grant. More than 30 years ago, The Fabulous Thunderbirds were the first band to come out with a rock & roll beat that was basically the blues: "You can't really push the envelope unless you're versed in the blues," Wilson said. "I am what I am. I started playing harmonica with all the old guys when I was a kid, 18 or 19 years old. "Nobody enhances what I do like the band on this album,” continued Wilson, who is joined by guitarist Johnny Moeller, bassist Steve Gomes, and Kevin Anker on keyboards, with Wes Watkins and Rob Stupka on drums. “You want to be really good if you've been doing it as long as I have.” Wilson counts Little Walter, George "Harmonica" Smith, and Lazy Lester as influences, but when he "heard that first record of James Cotton's on Verve," he realized he could play a lot of different music and legitimize it.

The Fabulous Thunderbirds

By the time he was 18, Wilson was playing with Albert Collins and Eddie Taylor. He moved to Minneapolis for about a year and a half before heading back down to Austin, Texas, to a vibrant music scene that was evolving energetically, and founded The Fabulous Thunderbirds. "Back then is when I really started playing with the old guys like Buddy Guy and Muddy Waters and I got to see up close how good they were and the high standards they set for themselves and their music."

Swing The Teapot, Floral Park January 21 At 9 PM swingtheteapot.squarespace.com (516) 488-2180 We'll confess: We were knocked out by Barry when he performed at The Long Island Music Festvial several years back. Now backed by a great band, this superb singer/songwriter touches all the bases with his rootsy sound; he's an area gem that you really need to check out if you haven’t already – and if you’re particuarly lucky, perhaps Barry will perform “If He Only Knew” – one of the most beautiful songs we’ve ever heard composed by a local songwriter.

PERFORMANCE James Taylor / Jimmy Buffett Sarah McLachlan Barclays Center Brooklyn

WCBS-FM decided to take a page out of the Z-100 promotional playbook and presented “Holiday In Brooklyn,” starring this oddly assembled trio of veteran stars. As expected, each of the artists performed a seasonal classic: McLachlan opened the evening with “Winter Wonderland,” while Taylor opened his hour-long set with “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” and his phrasing accurately capJames Taylor tured the wistful quality of the tune. Buffett nicely incorporated his carefree party persona into “Jingle Bell Rock,” and joked that the song was from his just-released Christmas album. “I know, Iit’s a very original album concept,” he cracked. Normally a concert headliner, Buffett did not bring most of his Coral Reefer Band to Barclays Center; looking back at the relatively few musicians backing him up, Buffett joked, “Where is the rest of the band? Are they on strike?” Nonetheless, he dutifully performed “Son Of A Son Of A Sailor,” “Come Monday,” and came out in the home stretch to duet with James Taylor on “Mexico,” who spent the early part of his own set performing early compositions “Carolina In My Mind” and “Something In The Way She Moves.”

The hits “Fire & Rain,” “You’ve Got A Friend,” and “Shower The People” were warmly received.. McLachlan is an artist more associated with Lilith Fair than WCBS-FM, which likes to bill itself as the home of New York’s greatest hits. McLachlan’s career got started in the 1990s, and WCBS-FM’s playlist generally cuts off at 1989. In addition, her hits “I Will Remember You” and “Adia” border on being dirges, with lots of cellos employed; the polar opposite of upbeat, snappy WCBS-FM fare. Nevertheless, the Barclays Center audience was respectful, and nicely applauded her music.

WCBS morning man Scott Shannon introduced his team to the audience during a break between sets, and observed that nobody comes to see the disc jockeys at a concert. He may have underestimated this audience, because the crowd did indeed show much enthusiasm for the work that Shannon and his colleagues do. – Lloyd Carroll

No ‘Harmony’: Music’s Shocking Splits

In December, the pop world was rocked by the decision by Camila Cabello to leave the world's biggest girl group, Fifth Harmony (above), just as the unit was on top of the world in terms of popularity. However, this sort of thing has happened before to bands near or at the height of their success: The Guess Who: RCA Records couldn't have been pleased: Group leader and principal songwriter Randy Bachman either quit or was fired (to this day, opinions vary) from the Canadian superstars during May 1970 – the very same month the “American Woman” single hit #1 in Billboard. The group soldiered on The Guess Who with other guitarists, but had few hits to match those penned by the BachmanBurton Cummings duo. The James Gang: Guitarist Domenic Troiano joined these Cleveland rockers after Joe Walsh decided to go solo. Some fine work ensued, but to this day many people still think the Gang simply broke up after Walsh left in 1971, as the new group and later lineups made almost no impact at radio. Fleetwood Mac: Remember the lineup of Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Dave Mason, Christine McVie, Bekka Bramlett, and Billy Burnette in 1995? Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham had bolted.

Comedy Tonight! Spamilton The Triad Oh, Hello! On Broadway Lyceum Theatre It isn’t necessary to have seen Hamilton to get the jokes in the new satirical revue Spamilton; however, it is best to be familiar with comedians Nick Kroll and John Mulaney as their crotchety septuagenarian alter egos Gil Faizon and George St. Geegland to appreciate their first foray on Broadway, Oh, Hello The musical Hamilton has become such an enormous cultural phenomenon, its creator

Since 1982 Tony, Drama Desk, and Obie winner Alessandrini has been delighting off-Broadway audiences with 25 editions of Forbidden Broadway, his topical, spot-on theatrical parodies. This time his exceptionally talented cast of five (accompanied by pianist /musical director extraordinaire Fred Barton) primarily spoofs Hamilton’s new celebrities: Lin-Manuel Miranda (Dan Rosales), whose Dashed Dreams: Love, Love, Love • Laura Pels Theatre Plenty • The Public Theater Idealistic dreams for a better future turn into bitter disillusionment in two acclaimed offBroadway British plays, which both traverse decades in their characters’ lives as well as British history. Kenneth marvels at the BBC’s telecast of “Our World,” the first live, international satellite telecast of international artists, proclaiming “the laws are constantly being overthrown, the music’s exploding, the walls collapsing.” Mike Bartlett satirizes the shortlived promise of these counterculture baby boomers and criticizes the failed idealism of the late 60s in this both very funny and sad three-act play covering 44 years in the lives of Kenneth and Sandra and their damaged children.

performance. Nick Kroll and John Mulaney’s large fan base is whooping it up as the comedians bring their cult comedy creations Gil and George – first seen in sketches on Comedy Central’s “Knoll Show” (2013-2015), off-Broadway, and on tour – to Broadway under the direction of Alex Timbers. Wearing intentionally unconvincing grey fright wigs and schlumpy ’70s clothes, the comics have concocted a loose story about septuagenarians presenting a play about themselves as “two legendary bachelors who live on the Upper West Side.” George fancies himself a writer, while Gil endlessly auditions as an actor. Roommates for over 40 years in a $75-a-month rent-controlled apartment, they face eviction over a $2,500 rent hike, riff on theater clichés, mispronounce words by emphasizing the wrong syllables, obsess about their cultural heroes Steely Dan and Alan Alda, describe New York in the 1970s, and evaluate every mayor since then. They pitch their public access show “Too Much Tuna” to a NY1 producer as an excuse to bring a surprise guest from the audience to be pranked in an improv riff. If you find “Too Much Tuna” hilarious, then you will love Oh, Hello – but I doubt the 95-minute show will win the comedians new fans.

revealing sets, and Susan Hilferty the periodperfect costumes) after a funeral. Now 37, Rose blames them for her failed life and demands that they buy her a home of her own because they filled her head with unrealistic expectations. Grim though this sounds, under Michael Mayer’s expert direction, Kenneth and Sandra are deliciously awful – and the play hilariously entertaining.

Photos by Joan Marcus

Plenty is certainly that: For Susan Traherne (beautiful and edgy Rachel Weitz), the central character in David Hare’s 1978 drama (given a sleek, intense revival by director David Leveaux), life has gone downhill since the thrilling days during WWII when she volunteered behind the German enemy lines as a 17-year-old British courier for the French Resistance. But in the postwar years, Susan is unable to recapture that excitement and sense of purpose as she stumbles into unfulfilling jobs and unsatisfying relationships including a frustrating marriage to a devoted, bland but sympathetic mid-level Foreign Service diplomat (Corey Stoll) who tries to weather the rollercoaster of her emotional storms, progressive mental instability and breakdowns. Susan’s disillusion is also meant to reflect the disappointment in the unfulfilled promise of a post-war England as it becomes complacent, consumed by materialist greed and international fiascos such as the Suez Canal disaster. The cast is splendid, especially Emily Bergl as Susan’s Bohemian artist friend, as well as Bryon Jennings as a senior diplomat.

Good Vibrations: My Life As A Beach Boy Mike Love With James J. Hirsch Blue Rider Press / Penguin Books USA

It is quite possible that Mike Love, the original lead singer of The Beach Boys, has performed in more concerts than any other performer in rock & roll history. Love was an original member of the American rock band, as he and his cousins Brian, Carl, and Dennis Wilson, along with Al Jardine, formed the group in 1961. Fifty-five years later, Love is still belting

BOOK BEAT With Lloyd Carroll

The Beach Boys catalog’ to their fans – yet, for all of the pop stardom Love has enjoyed, the performer seems to have had to endure a lot of derision from rock music snobs. Those fans’ and (and some critics)’ general thinking is that Brian Wilson was the musical genius in the group, and that Love was always trying to stifle Wilson’s creativity, starting with 1966's masterpiece album, Pet Sounds, because it deviated from the formula that made The Beach Boys popular – songs about surfing, cars, and girls. That old trope was revived in 2012; in the midst of The Beach Boys’ 50th anniversary tour, reports surfaced that Love, who has the license to use “The Beach Boys” as his touring band’s name,

fired Brian Wilson. Love claims that the story is inaccurate. It’s clear that setting the record straight once and for all was the motivation Love to publish this memoir, the title of which is appropriate since he wrote the lyrics to the #1 classic – and ironic as well, since a lot of the behind the scenes world of the band was far from anything resembling positive vibes. Love’s up-anddown relationship with Brian Wilson is the centerpiece of the book. Love recalls the joyous times that they collaborated on songs, with Brian handling the melodies while he acted as wordsmith. Unfortunately, malevolent Murry Wilson, the father of Brian, Carl, and Dennis, also served as The Beach Boys’ manager – and sometimes submitted songs that Love worked on to Sea Of Tunes, the band’s music publisher, with only Brian Wilson’s name on them. Brian kept assuring Love that the error would be corrected, but it never was. Love, trying to preserve harmony, delayed suing Brian Wilson until the mid-1990s.

Also, the general thinking by some longtime fans is that Love was envious of the band’s drummer and unquestionable wild child, Dennis Wilson. In their 1960s heyday, Love and Dennis Wilson competed on stage for the unofficial title of Beach Boys sex symbol, but it wasn’t much of a contest: Dennis was the quintessential blond-haired California surfer, while Love, despite his great stage presence, was fighting a losing battle against male pattern baldness from an early age. Surprisingly, Love devotes only a single page to his thinning hairline, as he concedes that is the reason why he has long worn hats. Perhaps it is the nearly 33 years that have passed since Dennis Wilson drowned in Marina Del Rey, but Love has only positive things to say about his late cousin. Understandably, Countless books have been written about The Beach Boys; even their biggest fans probably believe they won’t learn anything new from yet another biography. In this case, they’d be wrong; Love is not ashamed to expose a lot of warts, including his own shortcomings. Good Vibrations is a lengthy but compelling read. Coincidentally, Brian Wilson is scheduled to release his autobiography, I Am Brian Wilson (Da Capo Press), this month. It will be interesting to see whether Brian corroborates or disputes what Love has written here.

She's already released her own pop songs; been featured in the hot DJ duo The Chainsmokers' “All We Know”; had a major summer hits with the single (and baseballthemed video) “Boyz N Poizn” as well as “Dollar Bill” (featuring Kid Ink); and is ready to tour with Tove Lo beginning in February; the local show will be February 22 at Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. The charismatic Ryan, who has been twice featured in this column during the past two years en route to her current budding superstar status, will likely have more singles released in 2017 via Columbia.
