Most industry insiders believe that the drama Collateral Beauty might battle Rogue One: A Star Wars Story for the big money at the box office this weekend, but it will likely be no

contest: Since the George Lucas return to his flagship creation is being so heavily hyped, there's no way this new meller can fail, meaning some pretty intergalatic lines at the 12-plex. Although Star Wars fans will have to embrace a new set of characters this time out, from all accounts the typical Star Wars feel has once again been achieved in what likely will be the biggest-grossing film of the 2016 holiday season. Since the last Star Wars epic was such a return to form, expect another good effort as one of filmdom's longest-running franchises continues to dominate the film world, the Oscars be damned..

reprobates. In all fairness, Smith has been toning down the action star guise of late; while last year's sports head trauma drama Consussion wasn't a huge smash, it did reveal the fine actor sometimes hidden behind all the explosions and body suits. The comparison here to the Jimmy Stewart holiday perennial are inevitable: In this film, Love, Time, and Death show up in human form to bring hope to a man who has been emotionally crushed by personal tragedy; somewhere, Clarence is probably getting a hover board to go with his wings. Time will tell if this new fantasy/drama even touches the hem of the greatness and inspiration that Frank Capra's classic has accrued through the decades. In all, this might be the most thoughtful film that Smith has ever agreed to star in. He very Previews by Cody Bell

There are many in Hollywood who believe that a small, little film with a great big cast may follow in the footsteps of such classics as It's a Wonderful Life and A Miracle On 34th Street as an eternal holiday classic: Such are the hopes for Collateral Beauty, headed by a star in Will Smith who usually means big box office, merging his talents with an eyepopping supporting cast including Keira Knightley, Edward Norton, Helen Mirren, Naomie Harris, Collateral Beauty Michael Pena, and Kate Winslet. It's true: For once, Smith won't be spending well might be the Jimmy Stewart of our time: the holidays tracking down aliens, running The everyman who is impossible not to like no with his dog through war-torn streets, or matter the role. follow, kicking off July 15 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and then visit more than 45 cities across the US and Canada – including a show at Madison Square Garden in New York City – before culminating with a four-night stand at The Forum in Los Angeles. For complete details, visit The 24K Magic World Tour’s official homepage at brunomars.com. The world tour is in support of Mars' new album, 24K Magic, which was released on November 18 and immediately shot to the #2 position on the Billboard 200, trailing only the new Metallica release. The trek also marks Mars' first full-length tour since 2013’s Moonshine Jungle World Tour, an

international blockbuster that sold two million tickets worldwide across 155 sold-out dates. Mars also has been all over TV and media during the past several weeks, with recent appearances already logged on The 2016 American Music Awards, “The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show,” and yet another appearance on “Saturday Night Live, where he performed two of his new songs, “24K Magic” and “Chunky.” What a ride it's been: Mars has sold more

than 170 million singles worldwide and more than 26 million albums worldwide, affirming him one of the best-selling artists of all time. He's had an armful of hits, but “Uptown Funk” is easily the biggest to date and by all accounts one of the biggest records of all time; the RIAA diamond certified smash made history as the longest-leading Billboard Hot 100 single of the 2010s, and is only the 10th single in the chart’s 57-year history to spend at least 14 weeks at #1.

The New York Mets dismissed third base coach Tim Teufel a few weeks ago, though the team later reported he would remain in the organization in various capacities. Teufel, a member of the 1986 Mets that won the World Series, was considered a

popular member of Terry Collins’ coaching staff. Teufel usually interacted with the fans, and when the Mets presented their monthly on-field ceremonies to honor Citi Field employees, Teufel would always be out there to shake their hands. Just about the only debit on Teufel’s record was the number of runners who were thrown out trying to score from second base during the 2016 season. In fairness to the coach, the Mets had trouble scoring runs via ways other than the home run, and Teufel apparently often believed that he had to roll the dice. The Mets were abysmal at getting runners in from third base with less than two out. Second baseman Neil Walker accepted the Mets' one-year qualifying offer of $17.2 million; had the player rejected it, he would have become a free agent. While his contributions to the Mets may have been overlooked because of the MVPlike season that the man he replaced, Daniel Murphy, had with the Washington Nationals, Walker was a valuable switch-hitter who hit with power and fielded his position far better than Murphy ever did while wearing a Mets uniform. Walker is also a leader in the clubhouse and seems to enjoy talking with reporters. Unlike Matt Harvey and countless others in his profession, Walker understands that media coverage generates consumer interest, and that helps drive up compensation for players.

Botte wrote an article last month that more or less called for the dismissal of New York Islanders general manager Garth Snow, as well as harshly criticizing the thin-skinned nature of Islanders communications department. Snow was a backup goaltender for the Islanders before he was hired by then-team owner Charles Wang in 2006 to replace Mike Milbury, who lasted 11 years as the Isles GM in a stint where they generally missed the playoffs; the rare times when they made the NHL postseason they were bounced after the first round. Milbury’s civil service-like tenure was a testament to the fact that Wang valued their friendship more than he cared about the team winning. The same criticism can be leveled at Snow, who has now been at the job as long as Milbury was. but that was only because they were fortunate enough to have played the mediocre Florida Panthers in the first round, who themselves hadn’t made it past the first round since 1996.

This year, the Islanders have reverted to losing form as the team consists of superstar center John Tavares and a bunch of nobodies. lettin’ loose this holiday season! Pier 94 is an iconic venue for holiday shows considering the volume of people holds and the unique energy it brings; spending a pre-New Year’s night here is something everyone should experience – and there are two incredible nights coming. On December 28, DJ Snake will be joined by Tchami, Malaa, and Mercer to give a unique, diverse performance including trap, deep bass, and electro house. If that’s not your style, rock/indie duo Justice will make an appearance on December 30 to bring a completely different feel. Moving onto Lavo, you get backto-back nights of great artists: On December 29, trap/electro house DJ Candyland lays down the dopest of beats to fill the room with dancing and good vibes. If you’re bold enough, you can just sleep over at the venue (not really, but that would be cool) and catch Dirty South tear up the club the next day. If you’re trying to stay with some dirty and hype music, The Gud Vibrations Tour on December 17 at the PlayStation Theater is the place to be; NGHTMRE and Slander offer a twohour back-to-back set with support from Habstrakt and KRNE. Having seen this show, I can report it was one of the best concerts I’ve attended in a long time. It’s not very often you have the music, the visuals, and the lights all on point and come together to deliver the perfect experience, but this was one of Jai Wolf

those times. The fluidity with which NGHTMRE and Slander perform their set is unparalleled, and really brings the night to life. The reason I love this venue is the different floors of music that all cater to a different genre or type of person – or, you could just go see Joyryde on December 30 to get the full experience. I’ve only recently discovered him, and was blown away when I first saw his show. He was able to blend six to eight different EDM genres and tempos into a single one-hour set, which is something you don’t see with many DJs. Joyryde was exceptionally versatile and

was able to blend the right tracks at the perfect time. This one is also highly recommended, folks, and seems to be the one I’m leaning towards right now. And then we go back to one of my favorites: As a New Year’s Eve afterparty on January 1 at 4 am, Griz and Gramatik will each perform 90-minute sets. After recently appearing in New York City on his “Good Will Prevail” tour, Griz is back to make another appearance with Gramatik (often performing together as Grizmatik). This will be a show you won’t want to miss, as these two are the best at live EDM performance and really bring that funky DJ Candyland

electro vibe to the dance floor with a unique sound and execution. Whew! I hope you were able to take that all in; it was even a lot for me the first time I saw all of that. With what little space I have left, I want to turn you all on to some new music (of course!). In my quest to make a new mix recently, I really went out there and was looking for all types of new music and was recently turned on to two very different artists: Jai Wolf and Dubloadz. Jai Wolf is the epitome of chill, melodic EDM. However, his songs have so much energy and vibrancy in them that it will blow you away. Known for his no-popular song “Indian Summer,” Wolf’s career has skyrocketed during the past two years, especially after Skrillex featured his “Ease My Mind” remix live. He’s one to watch out for and will only be getting bigger as time goes on. Dubloadz, on the other hand, is the definition of dirty, grimy dubstep. His speaker-breaking frequencies and sound production is unparalleled; all of his songs just make you wanna say “what is that sound, even?” Add to all that: His onstage energy is comparable to that of a person who just drank an pack of Red Bull. With a slew of personal edits as well, Dubloadz not only produces ear-shattering music, but also brings his “A game” when performing live. Thanks for checking back in again with me, and I look forward to bringing you more of the best from the EDM world. Contact me at richiegtechno @gmail.com; keep ragin’, my friends!

y now, the story is the stuff of legend, and, of course, some good news in a year such as 2016: Sal Valentinetti, still in his early twenties, breaks free from a life as pizza delivery guy to appear on NBC's “'America's Got Talent,” and now he seems destined for international stardom at the highest level. It's little wonder that's he's been booked for three nights – December 15 and 16 at 8 pm, and he'll return on December 22 – at The Paramount in Huntington, but act fast (paramountny.com). All of the dates, at press time, were nearly sold out, an incredible achievement for such a newcomer, and it's a

likely precursor to this charismatic young performer's new life as a throwback crooner for the new era. We don't have to tell you the details: Valentinetti is an Italian pizza delivery man at his cousin's place in Bethpage. After his success on the NBC show, Valentinetti has stated that he wants to bring back Dean Martin-style roasts, a mixture of insult comedy and old-time showbiz. However, it's that voice – “Sal The Voice,” as he's been dubbed by locals and TV judges – that has propelled him to where he is today. Valentinetti's bio states that he first learned American standards at his grandmother’s

Until recently, at least, he could be found on most Sundays sipping cappuccino at the café, telling stories, making jokes, and planning his next move. Blazing Down Their Own Path

Who: The Long Island-based indie band Quarter Horse is on the boards once again, with a fresh, new album and a busy schedule of upcoming shows. This marks te second appearance in this column for this fast-rising band. The Artists & Their Sound: From the band’s official bio: “Members from two Long Island bands, siblings and longtime friends came together to form Quarter Horse in 2013. Described as Americana, the group’s sound is further defined by a range of influences, including folk, rock, alternative, and jazz. Signatures of this sound are threepart vocal harmonies, tandem lead guitar, and sections of improv that showcase unique instrumentation. “The band quickly adopted a model for songwriting, which employs the collaboration and creative input from each member. This is evident in the diversity of tracks found on the River Flow EP, their first release in October 2014. Over the past two years, Quarter Horse has played venues across Long Island and Manhattan such as The Bitter End, The Paramount, Stephen Talkhouse, Patchogue’s Alive After Five, and The Great South Bay Music Festival. They have also performed live on several local radio stations. The band’s self-titled debut album, produced by Andy Falco of The Infamous Stringdusters, was released on December 3. On that same date, they held their album release party at the barn at Benner’s Farm in East Setauket. The sold-out show included Quarter Horse performing the album in its entirety, along with sets by Cassandra House, Andy Falco and Leslie Mendelson, and Jellyband, as well as special guests throughout the night, including electric mandolinist Andrew Hendryx, cellist Jon Preddice, and saxophonist, Jeremy Wall.” To Learn More About & To Contact The Artists: Upcoming Quarter Horse shows: January 12 at at Revolution Bar & Music Hall in Amityville supporting Shotgun Wedding; January 28 at Grey Horse Tavern in Bayport; and February 25 at House Of Brews in Port Jefferson. UK/Europe manager. Jayne's earliest recordings as just Jayne County (after her output as Wayne County & The Electric Chairs on Safari Records UK) were put together by Warren, a combination of new songs, cover versions, and a County classic or two. The first sighting of these recordings was a vinyl-only release on the Belgiumbased indie Konexion Records in 1985 titled Amerikan Cleopatra, a rousing, rocking, fun catch-up round for new fans and the loyalists from punk. "Man Enough To Be A Woman" and "Bad In Bed" had shown up on Electric Chairs albums originally, but were given revamped, newly energized treatments here. Ramped-up covers of 1960s classics "Are You A Boy Or Are You A Girl" (originally by The Barbarians) and "Double Shot Of My Baby's Love" (The Swinging Medallions) brought a mapcap party vibe, and then there were the new songs: "Xerox That Man," "The Lady Dye Twist," "When Queens Collide," "Fun In Amerika," "I Fell In Love With A Russian Soldier," and "Love Lives On Lies" were brilliant welcome additions to Jayne's repertoire. Still, The Belgium-based label didn't seem to have the financial backing or the public relations

knowhow to get the album off the ground and into other countries – especially the UK, where Jayne had enjoyed a major fan base since 1977. It was in 1986 that Warren got the UK label Revolver Records to release the album in England as Private Oyster (the title of a short intro Jayne delivered as the album began, with the tracks in a different order). Dave Thompson gave Oyster a rave review and "The Lady Dye Twist" got some UK press, but the album did not get the distribution and promo push that it needed. It was, again, a vinyl-only release, and did not remain available after a number of years. In the winter of 2015, MVD Distribution began releasing The Jayne County Legacy Series to make available the indie County albums that had gone out of circulation, many of which had never gotten proper distribution in the first place. The first in the series was the 1993 album Goddess Of Wet Dreams, which had been released in a poorly packaged and distributed version by the ESP DISK label. In early 2016, MVD released a beautifully repackaged edition of Goddess, which is now available

everywhere including Amazon, Spotify, iTunes, and really cool record shops. Now, MVD is ready to release a combined-into-one CD edition of Amerikan Cleopatra and Private Oyster, the first time that either title has been available on anything other than vinyl. You can place advance orders now on Amazon and finally get your hands on the great, lost, early Jayne County albums that never made their way to the USA. Punk's not dead!
