FILM Doctor Strange

Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mads Mikkelsen, Michael Stuhlbarg, Benjamin Bratt Directed by Scott Derrickson Walt Disney Pictures Opens November 4 It's being touted as the last big superhero film of 2016 (not to mention the first of the winter holiday film season), and this one is different from a very crucial aspect: Marvel Comics' Doctor Strange, an on-and-off character on newsstands since 1963, clearly doesn't have the popularity – or name recognition – of other Marvel franchises that have gone on to film success, such as The Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, X-Men, Captain American, Iron Man, The Avengers, and other longtime comics stars. Then again, Ant-Man wasn’t exactly a big star on his own (yeah, we know), but his film turned out to outdraw films such as the recent X-Men epic. Playing devil's advocate, another film based on Marvel characters in Guardians Of The Galaxy went on to be as big a hit as the films featuring the stars based in the

T

sorcerer after he begins a relationship with a comely mystic, The Ancient One (Swinton). He soon uses his powers to become one of earth's most heroic defenders. Walt Disney has done something canny and brilliant in advance of this movie's release: The studio issued a lavish 15-minute preview of the actionpacked, spectacleladen new film that not only should whet the appetites of Doctor Strange fans, but also those of other Marvel characters, as the teaser hinted of new stars getting their due. When all is said and done, Doctor Strange should be a litmus test for how superhero films will fare in 2017; some claim fantasy films are played out, others insist they're what’s keeping the box offices afloat. Perhaps the good doctor can conjure up some goodwill as mainstream cinema heads into the crucial last two months of the year. Preview by Cody Bell

1960s were. Which brings us to the unusual character of Doctor Strange, who is just as his name implies: Billed as “the mightiest magician of the cosmos,” Dr. Stephen Strange (Cumberbatch, whose star power as one of the film world’s current heartthrobs might help greatly), a humbled former surgeon, becomes a true

The Machine returns for its latest appearance at this famed theater in the round, where it has emerged as an annual favorite. Hailed by many as America’s top Pink Floyd show, the touring act has forged a 25-year reputation of excellence, extending the legacy of Pink Floyd while creating another legacy all its own. large clubs, and casinos across North and Central America, Europe, and Asia. They have also appeared at renowned music festivals such as Bonnaroo, Riverbend, Gathering Of The Vibes, Buffalo's Artpark, and Germany’s Rock of Ages.

The New York-based tribute band focuses on making every show an authentic “Floydian” experience for its fans. Known for performing a diverse mix of The Floyd’s extensive 16-album repertoire (complete with faithful renditions of popular hits as well as obscure gems), The Machine’s musicianship, dramatic lighting and video, and passionate delivery sets them above and beyond other tribute acts, according to its PR team.In the classic tradition, The Machine explores collective improvisation paralleling and even rivaling that

of an early 1970s Pink Floyd mentality. Their use of expanded theatrical elements and elaborate stage displays continues in the spirit of the later Floyd lineups of the 1980s. The band is also known for recreating entire albums as a part of their show, accepting requests from fans, and for taking an “A to Z” approach in which one song is played for every letter of the alphabet. Additionally, the quartet has often shared the stage with full symphony orchestras, including the Atlanta, Detroit, Pittsburgh and San Diego symphonies.

New York Mets fans shouldn’t be too upset that their team lost the NL Wild Card game to the San Francisco Giants given the injury-decimated state of the Mets, coupled with the fact that they had to face the Giants’ ace, Madison Bumgarner, who

rarely gives up a run at Citi Field. Considering that the Mets were 60-62 at one point in August, extending their season David even slightly into October, Wright with a home game to boot, is a minor miracle. A lighthearted moment for the Mets occurred the day the team clinched a wild card berth in Philadelphia on the nextto-last day of the regular season. As part of the time-honored hazing of rookies, Mets veterans had their newbies dress in the uniforms worn by The Rockford Peaches and The Racine Belles in the 1992 film A League Of Their Own. “We had to get coffee and donuts for the team, and had to walk through the streets of Center City,” said second baseman T.J. Rivera. “A number of Mets fans were in Philadelphia for the weekend and they recognized us. We did get some strange looks from some Philadelphians.” It’s only natural for fans to speculate on

LIGBT Titans: We Weldon didn't have room for LIGBT news in Drayton Jr. our last issues due to our coverage of The Sandy Catalano Open that will take place this weekend (November 5 and 6) at Herrill Lanes in New Hyde Park, so we'll catch up on recent LIGBT tournament winners this time out: Weldon Drayton Jr. of Central Islip won his first LIGBT title in a high scoring shootout on October 16 at South Levittown Lanes. Drayton defeated seven-time LIGBT champion Dexter Sapp of Valley Stream, 294-281, to win the $1,200 top prize. Sapp won $600 for second place; James Marino of Lindenhurst finished third, worth $400. Rounding out the top four was John Battaglia of Massapequa, who earned $300. Yon Gyo Phark of Flushing won his first LIGBT title at the club’s inaugural event at Strike 10 Deer Park on October 9. Yon Gyo defeated Hector Perez ($1,000) of Whitestone to win the $2,000 top prize. Adam DeRossi of Massapequa Park finished third, worth $600; rounding out the top four was Chris Werben of Brooklyn, who earned $400. The large prize fund was thanks in part to $1,000 added by tournament sponsor Realty Direct. personnel moves the Mets will make during the offseason. Before commencing with roster improvements, Mets executives would be wise to examine if changes might be needed with both the training and medical staffs. While injuries are inevitably going to happen, this season was completely off the charts. In June, I asked Mets general manager Sandy Alderson, who was announcing David Wright’s injury woes, if baseball teams use cost accounting techniques of measuring man-games lost to injury. “Yes, and we plot it against the payroll dollars that those players are getting,” said Alderson. It’s safe to say that the Mets had an unfavorable variance in that area in 2016. It is somewhat surprising that sports doesn’t have a bigger presence at New York Comic Con, considering that sports fans like to wear the uniforms of their favorite players and teams, just as a lot of Comic Con attendees dress up to resemble their favorite comic book and TV show characters. As per tradition pro wrestling had a presence at The Javits Center for the NYCC, as retired grapplers Ted DiBiase, Jerry “The King” Lawler, Ric Flair, and former WWE women’s champ Ashley were on hand. Incidentally, Ashley, whose full name is Ashley Massaro, lives in Suffolk County: “My kids go to the same school as Mick Foley’s,” she told me. Thomas of Stamford, Connecticut ($750), Bill Verni of West Babylon ($400), and Yon Gyo Phark cashed big once again with $300. Hector Perez of Whitestone won his first LIGBT title in a clutch performance on September 25 at Whitestone Lanes in Queens, earning the $1,200 top prize. Phil Rivera of Franklin Square won $600 for second place, Jeonghun Ji of College Point finished third worth $40, and defending Whitestone champion Andrew Mienkiewicz of Massapequa earned $300.

Tony Jimenez of Massapequa Park, who had a great look throughout the tournament, won his first LIGBT title in dominating fashion on September 18 at Herrill Lanes. In the finals, Jimenez defeated Steve Chiu of Little Neck 261203 to win the $1,200 top prize. Chiu won $600 for second place; Andrew Mienkiewicz of Massapequa finished third with 198 worth $400. Rounding out the top four was the LIGBT's previous event winner, Justin Kampf of Levittown, with 184 worth $300. To get involved with these enjoyable handicap tournaments, visit ligbtour.com.

While New England Patriots QB Tom Brady could probably lead his team to the Super Bowl until he is eligible to collect Social Security, the New York Jets and New York Giants are both learning the hard way that having starting quarterbacks who are in their mid-30s is not a recipe for success. One of the bigger stories of the NFL season so far is that television ratings have been markedly down for night games. be playing out the string early. Having the Presidential debates go head-to-head with nationally televised football games didn’t help. A positive TV development for the NFL this

Phil Jackson

season is having the Rams playing in Los Angeles again, even though the excitement is tempered somewhat since the Rams stink. In yet another marriage of sports and entertainment, Comcast

cable network E!, home of all things Kardashian, will broadcast a six-part documentary, “Hollywood & Football,” about the Rams’ return to Los Angeles. It wouldn’t be surprising if it also turns up on NBC Sports Network, also owned by Comcast. The Brooklyn Nets may arguably be the NBA’s worst team going into the season, but the team finally seems to finally have made positive longterm strategy decisions. Nets general manager Sean Marks, who replaced Billy King last winter, is working hard to change the team’s culture by placing an emphasis on developing young players as opposed to trying to obtain the short-term fixes that King favored, such as trading first-round draft picks for washed-up warhorses Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce and never-was Gerald Wallace. Marks’ first major decision was hiring Huntington native Kenny Atkinson as head coach. It’s easy to root for the likable Atkinson to succeed; I chatted with him at the Nets’ press event over the summer, and he was excited when I handed him a copy of Good Times: “My brothers and I used to read it all the time,” he said, and added that he became a big fan of southern rock because The Marshall Tucker Band and The Allman Brothers Band were featured on our covers, and frequently played on Long Island back in the day. Atkinson realizes that the Nets aren’t going to win a lot of games this year; what he has to avoid is having his team lose in a newsworthy way. There can’t be anything as woeful as the 2009/10 New Jersey Nets that set a dubious NBA record by losing their first 18 games, or the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers, who still hold the NBA record for possessing the all-time worst record at 9-73. A roster featuring young veterans Brook Lopez and Jeremy Lin should prevent the Nets from achieving embarrassing futility. The New York Knicks have worries of their own. It’s easy to wonder if team president Phil Jackson

did not do his due diligence with respect to his trade with the Chicago Bulls for guard Derrick Rose. Jackson was probably so relieved that the oft-injured Rose got medical clearance from the Knicks medical staff that he did not pay any attention to the fact, or certainly did not take seriously, that Rose would be involved in a rape allegation civil suit in California. It turned out that Rose missed part of the Knicks training camp testifying; time will tell how this will affect Rose’s play. Center Joakim Noah, who the Knicks signed as a free agent, made tabloid backpage headlines when he refused to attend a team dinner with West Point cadets because of his pacifist beliefs. Noah could hear it from the Madison Square Garden faithful if he gets off to a slow start.

Tickets are at ticketmaster.com or livenation.com; for more information, log on to thetheateratwestbury.com. Clearly, performing at venues such as these cements Regan’s ascent as an “A-list” comedy star; however, he also seems to be all over broadcast and “over the top” TV, with recent appearances on “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon” and Jerry Seinfeld’s “Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee.” The sandy-haired comedian from Florida is now a television Compiled by Bob Smith, a master of nebulous obfuscation. and film veteran, making a whopping 27 appearances on “The Late Show With David Letterman,” as well as a featured role in the Chris Rock film Top Five. Indeed, the Regan appearance on Comedy Central was historic, as it marked the first live broadcast of a comedy concert in the humor network’s history. Performing more than 100 shows each year, it’s a wonder that he has time for other forms of media, but his popularity has been buoyed by his three TV specials, three CDs, and four DVDs: The Radio City Music Hall appearance is also available on CD and DVD and a video or audio download; his “All By Myself” (2010) is available on CD and download only through his website (brianregan.com); his two previous Comedy Central shows, “The Epitome Of Hyperbole” and “Brian Regan Standing Up,” are available on DVD; and earlier works such as “I Walked On The Moon” and “Brian Regan Live” remain best sellers on audio and video formats. But don’t let our long list of facts and figures hype you; other major comedy stars consider Regan to be among the best plying his trade these days: “He is one of my favorite, favorite stand-up comedians,” said Jerry Seinfeld, while Chris Rock enthused: “No comedian in the world says, ‘Yeah, I want to follow Brian Regan.’” More info: Log on to the website listed above, or find Regan all over social media.

Mulcahy's Pub & Music Hall, Wantagh Nov. 4 Beginning at 8 PM • muls.com (516) 783-7500 • ticketweb.com

There are many tribute bands that roam the area, but few have been as wildly successful or wide-ranging at Disco Unlimited, which performs the hits of the late 70s/early 80s disco era with outstanding vocals and a real stage show. The Mul's usual Friday favorites, The 90s Band, keep the music flowing at 10 pm as nostalgia gets another weekend started.

Drop Dead Sexy / The Retros The Nutty Irishman, Farmingdale November 11 Beginning at 9 PM (516) 293-9700 thenuttyirishman.com

As cover bands go, the wacky dudes in Drop Dead Sexy be be doing something right: This veteran group is one of the few that not only is popular in this area, but tours throughout the east coast as well. And that’s not all on this Friday night: The rocking Retros get the music started at 9 pm. Drop Dead Sexy

It's Wednesday, and it's hump day – what better way to get over a bad job than spending your evening with one of the area’s top cover groups? These Wednesday shows at Farrell's have long been a Wednesday tradition at Farrell's and with good reason: No area band brings the goods like these veterans.

PERFORMANCE

Review & photo by Bob Smith

Les Brers NYCB Theatre At Westbury

It both saddened and warmed hearts of fans of The Allman Brothers Band when Gregg Allman announced in 2014 that the group would end as a touring unit, but there's still plenty of Allman joy to be had: Not only is a healthy Allman back performing live with his own band, but drummer Butch Trucks, a founding member of The Allman Brothers Band, has assembled Les Brers with drummer Jaimoe, percussionist Marc Quiñones, and bassist Oteil Burbridge. Adding Allman friends in guitarists Jack Pearson and Pat Bergeson, keyboardist Bruce Katz, and singer Lamar Williams, Jr. (son of Lamar Williams) to the mix, this new group was born ... and we do mean new. The group had basically announced its formation in September when this show was booked just days later at this famed theatre in the round. Happily, Les Brers is not your average bear – energetic and reverent, this eight-piece ensemble performs the best of the Allman Brothers with more kick and drive than even their most ardent fans would expect. Sure, Trucks, Jaimoe, and associates are now basically their own tribute band, but the crowd that showed up on a warm Sunday night enjoyed hearing the band hitting the note pretty much as well as the full Allmans band did. Beginning with “Hot 'Lanta,” the group never let up; a broiling version of “Every Hungry Woman” brought the band its first of about eight standing ovations from a not-full but hyper-enthusiastic crowd. A soulful “Please Call Home” gave Williams Jr. a chance to show what a soulful vocalist he has become. Despite some early sound gliches, this was a typical Allmans-style tight ship, with nary a clam or a note wasted. What a nice surprise: The Allman Brothers Band is gone, but Les Brers has a real chance of carrying on the tradition every bit as well. May the road go on forever.

One of the most unique Americana artists to hit the charts during this decade, Josh Ritter, makes a rare area appearance as he headlines Landmark On Main Street in Port Washington on Sunday, November 13 at 7 pm. Tickets and information are at landmarkonmainstreet.org. It’s been a busy autumn for Ritter, as he has not only been headlining dates on his own, but also suppotring country star Jason Isbell. This extensive run supports Ritter’s newest album, Sermon On The Rocks, released in October on Pytheas Recordings/Thirty Tigers. In addition, Ritter has co-written many of the songs on Bob Weir’s new album, Blue Mountain, while writing the score and

Produced by Ritter and Trina Shoemaker (Queens Of The Stone Age, Emmylou Harris), Sermon On The Rocks was recorded over two weeks at New Orleans’ The Parlor Recording Studio and features Matt Barrick from The Walkmen on drums, Zachariah Hickman on bass, Josh Kaufman on guitar, and Sam Kassirer on piano. Of his inspiration behind Sermon On The Rocks, Ritter noted: “I wanted to play messianic oracular honky tonk.” Over the course of his career, Ritter has released seven full-length albums, including his most recent, 2013’s The Beast In Its

Tracks, which debuted at #22 on the Billboard 200 and #8 on the Top Rock Albums chart. The record also received widespread critical praise — while during the same period, Ritter made his debut as a published author with his New York Times best-selling novel, Bright’s Passage (Dial Press/Random House). Of the work, none other than the legendary horror and mystery writer Stephen King wrote in The New York Times Book Review: “Shines with a compressed lyricism that recalls Ray Bradbury in his prime … This is the work of a gifted novelist.”

Betty’s Summer Vacation

Bye, Bye: One of the first TV cancellations of this season is “Murder In The First,” axed by TNT after three seasons. New series that aren't setting the world on fire in terms of ratings during their early runs are ABC's “Conviction” and “Notorius,” as well as Fox's “Pitch.” NBC's “The Good Place,” with its wealth of star power in Kristen Bell and Ted Danson, an alumnus of “Cheers,” is inching higher in the ratings … Massive grappler and MMA star Brock Lesnar is the cover subject on the new edition of 2K's video game WWE 2K17, now burning up sales in both video games stores and on the charts by virtually every tabulation to date … We can’t figure it out: Pro wrestling magazines in recent years can’t seem to stay afloat — yet, WWE stars on general interest or genre magazine covers always seem to sell exceedingly well; the stunning photo of WWE divas Nikki and Brie Bella on the October issue of Muscle & Fitness pretty much makes the point why… Speaking of pro wrestling, the last remaining newsstand magazine covering the mat sport – Pro Wrestling Illustrated, which was founded by Stanley Weston in Freeport, and later published in Rockville Centre before moving its offices to Pennsylvania – is now available for wrestling fans on Amazon's Kindle tablets … Much of the talk on sports talk radio and in newspapers of late has been the decline in ratings for the NFL for its Monday, Thursday, and Sunday night broadcasts. Many are blaming other events, such as the recent Presidential debates, for the sag in what once was the surest thing in the Nielsens … The exceedingly windy longtime wristwatch pitchman Tim Temple has left Evine Live, the former ShopNBC, ShopHQ and Value Vision; no reason was given for the sudden departure, though Temple wrote a goodbye to his supporters on Facebook. Temple has also served in a similar capacity at home shopping networks Shop At Home and HSN ... Croton watch head David Mermelstein, who used to be ubiquitous at Evine, was recently spotted at theshops.tv, which also features former Evine host Dave King … In print: Author and New Yorker Irene Inker recently released her first book with the not particularly imaginative title From Rags To Riches – yet, the Russian immigrant uses the tome to reflect on the life of an immigrant from many serious angles. Inker, born in Saint Petersburg, grew up in Russia during the communist era, and experienced serious issues being Jewish during anti-Semitic times. She became disillusioned with the hippocratic regime and ran to the U.S. during the late 1980s. This new fiction book is available at Amazon.com.

Kelsea Goes For Her Fourth: Hot on the heels of her record-breaking third #1 hit,“Peter Pan,” Kelsea Ballerini recently released her new single, “Yeah Boy,” to country radio. The Black River recording artist recently celebrated her 23rd birthday by topping both Country Aircheck and Billboard Country Airplay charts with “Peter Pan,” which also earned double #1’s on Billboard, making Ballerini the first woman to reach #1 on the magazine's Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay charts simultaneously. To cap off the incredible year, Ballerini received CMT’s second annual Breakout Artist of the Year award during the network’s “2016 Artists of the Year” on October 2. Tomorrow (November 2) will find her at the 50th annual CMA Awards, where she is nominated in two categories: New Artist of the Year Kelsea Ballerini and Female Vocalist of the Year. She is also vying for Favorite Female Artist – Country at the fan-voted American Music Awards on Sunday, November 20, airing live at on ABC. Voting is now open through November 14 at amavote.com. Ballerini holds the distinction of having written all three gold-certified songs from her debut album The First Time, including her platinum-certified debut single, “Love Me Like You Mean It.” Ballerini is set to headline her own tour, will which stop locally on December 12 at Irving Plaza in New York City. Miranda Warning: On the heels of the announcement about her album The Weight Of These Wings (in stores on November 18), Mariana Lambert is planning her upcoming “Highway Vagabond” tour, which will stop at Mohegan Sun on February 7. For additional details on the tour including ticket purchase information, visit MirandaLambert.com. Her first single, “Vice,” is now climbing the charts at radio, and it’s another notch in Lambert’s belt: The RCA Records Nashville artist previously has issued five studio albums: Kerosene (2005), Crazy ExGirlfriend (2007), Revolution (2009), Four The Record (2011), and Platinum (2014), the latter earning Lambert a Grammy Award for Best Country Album, in addition to her previous Grammy win for Best Female Country Vocal Performance in 2010 for Miranda “The House That Built Lambert Me.” Joining Lambert on the “Highway Vagabond” tour will be special guests Old Dominion and Aubrie Sellers. Big & Rich? You Got That Right: Big & Rich have hit the Top 10 once again with “Lovin’ Lately,” and now the duo can claim a “hat trick” of three straight singles in that portion of the chart in their decade-plus history. The single features a vocal cameo from Tim McGraw, who actually gave them the idea for the song. For more information about the duo, visit BigandRich.com. An In-Depth Look At The Hottest Area Artists

Deerheart:

Sid & Nancy: Danny Garcia has done it again. The indie producer of The Rise & Fall Of The Clash and Looking For Johnny is ready to unleash Sad Vacation: The Last Days Of Sid & Nancy – the real, comprehensive overview of the lives

New Songs Are Stirring The Nation

Who: A veteran Long Islandbased musician, Tom Ciociari, and his Americana/power pop rock act Deerheart have pretty much done the impossible: Deerheart’s new indie release, Fer Elsie..., and its first single, “Joey's Girl,” have attracted legitimate national attention in a big way. In a refreshing way of doing business (unlike some Long Island-based acts who pump up nebulous achievements and sometimes blatant tall tales in order to gain attention), Ciociari simply released the album on CDBaby and other outlets, and the response has been beyond anything we've seen in years – online radio stations and the alternative press have raved. In a major coup, the national Huffington Post website focused on Deerheart and the new single on August 19 in the same music column that also profiled such major stars as Esperanza Spalding, Michelle Phillips, Lee Greenwood, Ian Thomas, and Young Gun Silver Fox’s Shawn Lee. The single “Joey's Girl” is already being hailed as one of the best tribute records to The Ramones ever recorded; according to Ciociari, the song is based on his future wife meeting Joey Ramone backstage at a show during the height of The Ramones' heyday. Deerheart has already performed at many of the most popular venues in Long Island and New York City; as the album continues to gain traction, look for him at a venue near you quite soon. The Artist & His Sound: From Deerheart's official bio: “Tom Ciociari (the brain behind Deerheart) is originally from Greenlawn, where he went to the same high school as Mariah Carey (although 10 years earlier). He lived most of his life on Long Island, with the exception of a short stint in New York City in 1981 making the Bleecker Street rounds (Kenny's Castaways, The Dugout, Bitter End), and had a couple of years (1984 through 1987) in Boston while in a band called The Pets. “Recently, Tom has played Boulton Center as a member of NYRMA (The New York Roots Music Association). He has participated in "The Elvis

Show,” which had been an annual Elvis Presley tribute show from 1991 through 2013 (and was one of the few performers to be included in every show). Currently, Tom has rounded up some musicians to join him on his new project, forming the band Deerheart. They will soon be releasing a new album, titled Fer Elsie....” To Learn More About & To Contact The Artist: Deerheart's new album is available for download via CDBaby and other outlets; a wider release is pending. Learn more at Facebook.com/TCDeerheart, Twitter: @TCDeerheart, and Bandcamp: deerheart1.bandcamp.com. Two new songs are also available for listening at axs.com. 22 • Good Times Magazine - November 1 - 14, 2016

of post-Sex Pistols Sid Vicious and his doomed paramour, Nancy Spungeon. Garcia has assembled the definitive lineup of participants from Sid's brief invasion of The Chelsea Hotel in New York City, as well as from Max's Kansas City, the club where Vicious played his final gigs; if you play drinking games, have a shot every time someone says 'Max's" during the film. Sid's desire to follow in the footsteps of his hero, Johnny Thunders, is accented by the use of classic tracks by Thunders’ post-New York Dolls band, The Heartbreakers. Sid and Nancy were the Kanye and KIm of their day, and they would certainly have had their own reality TV series if they were around now. Watch for Sad Vacation when it shows up in theaters – it's an absolute must for rock and punk obsessives. Glam Mania: The mania for early- to mid-70s glam continues unabated, and David Bowie madness is reaching a new peak with the massive box set Who Can I Be Now (1974-1976). As expensive as it is, it’s selling up a storm, and a new box set of music surrounding Bowie's debut film, The Man Who Fell To Earth, is hitting the racks at Christmas time.

A new book (one more than 600 pages long) in Shock And Awe by Simon Reynolds successfully covers the birth of glam and preglam, right through the repercussions of post glam. If you are a fan of this era and you believe that it never got the proper attention, you will have to acquire this as quickly as possible. In addition to the Bowie boxes, there is an equally heavy (and expensive) Lou Reed box featuring his classic RCA albums in CD form, with a book included. MVD has launched the Jayne County Legacy series of reissues, with the first, Goddess Of Wet Dreams, already doing well; another release is set for January. Glam on, people – it's as if MainMan never left. Marvel Magic: As we do from time to time, let’s look at what has emerged as the new rock & roll: comic book conventions, movies, TV shows, books, and comic book culture in general. I saw a 15minute 3D IMAX advance preview of the new Doctor Strange film, and it looks to be the most tripped-out comic book movie thus far, be it from Marvel, DC, or any other publishing house. Benedict Cumberbatch fits the Steven Strange role like the prover-

bial hand in a glove – in this case, mystical gloves; I predict it will be the overall hit of the season. Netflix is scoring big with its new Marvelbased series “Luke Cage,” which also seems to be holding its own against “Daredevil,” which also appears on the streaming service. As for network TV, this season of ABC's "Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.” featuring the Ghost Rider character has been its strongest thus far.

BITS & PIECES Nikki Vianna

Nikki Vianna:

Primed For Stardom

It's been rumored for ages, but now you can keep your eyes peeled for the debut studio album by singer/songwriter (and Instagram sensation) Nikki Vianna, who from all accounts could be the next breakout star in the pop-dance genre. The young twentysomething, also famous for her YouTube performances, has been honing her craft ever since she was a child in Queens. She attended some of New York City's finest performing arts schools, where teachers called her "a triple threat" – someone who has talent in singing, acting, and dance – someone that they knew would be a star. Vianna has been preparing by being trained by Craig Derry, the vocal coach for Katy Perry, Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Marc Anthony, and Whitney Houston. Her 2013 song “Let It Go” led Vianna being signed to Flo Rida's music label, International Music Group, and her new album is being produced with Jason "Poo Bear" Boyd, who has helped launch many of Justin Bieber's hits to the top of the charts.

Roger Waters:

Sailing To The Coliseum Roger Waters will return to North America in 2017 with a tour, “Us +

Them,” featuring classic Pink Floyd, new songs, and solo work. The tour runs through the summer of 2017 and will make area stops: A night at the renovated Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale on September 17, and two nights at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on September 11 and 12. “We are going to take a new show on the road, the content is very secret,” said Waters. “It’ll be a mixture of stuff from my long career, stuff from my years with Pink Floyd, some new things. Probably 75 percent of it will be old material and 25 percent will be new, but it will be all connected by a general theme. It will be a cool show, I promise you. It’ll be spectacular, like all my shows have been.” For more information, visit RogerWaters.com. Ru R us sh h: :
