What Ailes Fox News: At press time, Fox News chairman Roger Ailes had just left the

Needless to say, this person is currently in another field of endeavor. – Bob Smith More On Media: One America News Network, operated by Herring Networks Inc., has had trouble getting onto as many cable systems as it would like. There might be a reason for that; even a cursory glance reveals that One America is so rightleaning it makes Fox News look like MSNBC, and comes across as a blatant imitation … Any way the wind blows: Just a few months after leaving his father's former Playboy empire and blasting Playboy Magazine's new nonudity policy, Hugh Hefner’s son Cooper Hefner, 24, is back with the company as its chief creative officer. In an editorial on his website, hop.com, Cooper wrote: “New leadership has stepped in and a team with a vision has been put in place. I’m excited to announce that Hop will be moved under Playboy and will become one of the company’s sub-brands. I’ll be stepping in as Playboy’s Chief Creative Officer and will participate in delivering a new Playboy, a Playboy understood by Millennials, like me. This chapter in the company’s history will be thrilling, challenging, but so rewarding and I am incredibly grateful to be a part of the team that re-introduces a brand that remains such a substantial part of my family’s legacy.” At press time, it's not known if Cooper Hefner will jettison the anti-nudity policy of the newly revamped Playboy, which thus far has been pretty much met with a collective yawn from both critics and newsstand operators (the debut “covered” issue from earlier this year is pictured here) ... Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is reportedly working with USA – ironically, the network of WWE – to develop a new 1980s-themed show.

cable television network; the occurrence was in light of a July 6 sexual harassment lawsuit filed by former “Fox & Friends” anchor Gretchen Carlson. Veteran news gatherers and professionals seem to agree: Ailes' reign heading Fox News incorporated a host of things that didn’t touch even the hem of journalism in the least (openly being in bed with the Republican party the most obvious infraction, of course). Especially in its formative years, Fox News employed female news readers that, by any standard, seemed to be hired mainly because of how attractive they appeared on

Dwayne Johnson camera; the tactic actually led to lists of “Hottest Fox News Anchors” popping up on “laddie boy”' websites all over the Internet. Female professionals in any field have the right to dress and conduct themselves any way they choose – but in the ratingshungry world of television, what seems obvious usually is what's really going on: The “values” network touted one thing, then acted differently behind the scenes. The only thing shocking about the Ailes saga was that it wasn’t shocking in the least. It’s the latest wilted feather in the cap of a company that’s unabashedly put ratings ahead of standards, and that new way of doing things has spread to virturally every other cable news network. There was a veteran TV reporter in upstate New York who insisted: “The news business shouldn't heal, it shouldn't help, and it shouldn't hinder – it should only report what’s going on.”

In this rare instance, that's a very good thing. Audiences apparently agreed, as this film blasted off into the box office cosmos from the moment it was released, making it number one with a phaser blast, as it were. This new effort, the third recreation of the

he end of an era is upon us: Black Sabbath is ending the epic musical journey it began nearly five decades ago with a 2016 world tour that will stop locally on Wednesday, August 17 at Nikon at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh on the final North American leg of its “The End” tour. The group’s “The End” farewell tour already performed in North America this winter – as well as Australia and New Zealand – to rave reviews, and is currently on tour in Europe for a mix of summer headlining and festival performances. versions of Captain Kirk (Chris Pine, now a major new star), Spock (Zachary Quinto), Scotty (Simon Pegg, who also among the screenwriters), Chekov (Anton Yelchin, who unfortunately and sadly died in the weeks before the film's release), Bones (Karl Urban), and Sulu (John Cho) aren't really William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, George Takei, DeForest Kelley, and the rest of the original cast. The young actors are all so strong that they are forging indelible new identities of the characters, all through the power of fine acting and even better scripts and plots. It would be too revealing to give away much of the story here; suffice it to say there are new worlds discovered, and new characters to grow to love. It's really comforting

that in this 50th anniversary year of the orginal “Star Trek” TV series, this new film pays them worthy homage by doing it all exactly right. There’s little doubt that when it comes to getting a performance enhancement advantage in international competition, no one tops Russian athletes. For too long, governing federations have conveniently looked the other

way – and yes, you can probably go back to the Iron Curtain era when many Eastern European female athletes looked like men, and it had nothing to do with sexual identity issues. Back then, few knew the side effects of drugs that purported to make you stronger. There was some buzz before the 2016 Olympics that The International Olympic Committee was thinking of banning Vladimir Putin’s best athletes from competing in Rio. As Dana Carvey used to say in his spot-on impression of President George H.W. Bush, “Uh-uh, that wasn’t gonna happen!” First of all, many large corporate sponsors of the Olympics such as Coca-Cola do business with Russia, and they do

LIGBT's Sizzling: Some deem bowling a “wintersport,” but the LIGBT’s tournament action never ceases through the summer months. Recent events saw repeat champions crowned: Josh Valdes, 33, of Staten Island won his second consecutive house shot title at South Levittown Lanes on July 24, earning him the $1,000 top prize. of Jamaica ($400), and Robert Aiello of Oceanside ($300). The previous tournament may have been the single most challenging event of LIBGT's eight seasons, but it didn't prevent Hector Diaz Jr., 37, of Bronx, NY from winning his second LIGBT title and $1,000 on July 17 at Herrill Lanes in New Hyde Park. Other finishers: Dwayne Redman of Bronx, NY ($600), Mike Simeone of Wantagh ($400), and Andrew Mienkiewicz of Massapequa ($300). The scores were historically low; the tournament pattern

not want to risk Putin’s ire, which would cost them millions of rubles. Also, no Russians would mean no ratings for NBC; yes, most Americans watch the Olympics to see the USA win gold medals and see who will be gracing boxes of Wheaties on the supermarket shelves soon – but American success isn’t the same unless we are beating a top villain. NBC did not spend big bucks, nor are they sending 170 sportscasters to Rio, to have 2016 be a replay of when America boycotted the Moscow Olympics in the summer of 1980 because President Jimmy Carter demanded it as a form of sanctions for the USSR invasion of Afghanistan. The USSR repaid the favor four years later when they boycotted the summer Olympics in Los Angeles. NBC executives didn’t have to lose sleep worrying about Russia not being part of the action; The Zika virus, however, remains a concern. It’s always tough to watch baseball greats in the twilights of their careers. Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard, in the last year of his contract, has been riding the bench for most of the year. It's understandable, since Howard was batting .154 as the Phillies took on the Mets three weeks Vladimir ago at Citizens Bank Park. Putin Sure enough, Howard got to start the second game of the

series, and it was like old times as he walloped a home run – the 46th time he has done that to the Mets in his career. It's also been tough for Howard’s counterpart in the Bronx, New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira. Injuries and a low batting average have been the debits on his record this year, but “Tex” has shown that he can still hit the long ball, particularly in clutch situations. Like Howard, Teixeira is in the last year of a lucrative contract, and the conventional wisdom Ryan Howard is that the Yankees will turn first base over to prospect Greg Bird next year. As this season comes to a close, Howard and Teixeira deserve classy public sendoffs from the teams that they have served so well for years. Enberg will be calling it a career at the end of this year. Enberg’s final season has, of course, been eclipsed by the fact that it’s also Vin Scully’s last with The Los Angeles Dodgers. It would be nice if the Mets would pay tribute to Enberg this weekend when Juan the Padres make their Lagares annual visit to Citi Field. New York Mets outfielder Juan Lagares has had a nice bounce-back season, yet he's struggled to find playing time in the Mets crowded outfield. That status should change given that Yoenis Cespedes’s quad injury is limiting his mobility, relegating him to left field. The Mets should use Michael Conforto and the so-far disappointing Alejandro de Aza to spell Cespedes and Curtis Granderson as the season heads towards the stretch. Not all Major League Baseball players are financially secure from the moment they put on the uniform. Mets reliever Seth Lugo had been in the minor leagues from 2011 until he was called up to Flushing this past summer. I spoke to Lugo about how he was able to keep his head above water economically. “It hasn’t been easy. I hope that I stick around awhile. I have

sizable student loans to pay off,” he candidly answered. It was a great idea to bring back World Team Tennis as The New York Empire will finish its six-game home schedule at legendary Forest Hills Stadium this Friday night as it takes on on The San Diego Aviators. The Empire, however had the worst luck scheduling games, and it had nothing to with weather: Their home opener was the same night The New York Mets were retiring Mike Piazza’s #31 uniform at Citi Field. The Empire's next two matches were held on days when the Mets and New York Yankees were playing each other in the annual Subway Series. That’s not a good way for a new product to get media attention. Bill Simmons, to me, is the most overrated sports writer in history. Nonetheless, I wanted to be fair and see if his new HBO weekly series, “Any Given Wednesday,” would change my opinion. I watched the first four episodes, and it was exactly what I expected as Simmons lamely tried to mix in pop culture and humor, and be a

confidante to A-list celebrities as Green Bay Packer QB Aaron Rodgers as well as actor and fellow Bostonian Ben Affleck. The problem with Simmons is that he is trying to be the 21st Century version of Dick Schaap. I read Dick Schaap; I watched Dick Schaap; I knew Dick Schaap – Bill, you’re no Dick Schaap. I was saddened when I lost a good friend from the press box last month, as longtime Bronx News, NY Sports Day, and Latino Sports writer Howard Goldin died. He was a fine writer, but more importantly, he was a gentleman and a great friend. Howard will be missed.

Tunstall’s Next Move

Longtime indie favorite KT Tunstall will hit the road this fall in support of her forthcoming new album, due in September on Caroline Records. The tour kicks off on September 14 in Washington, D.C., and will hit major cities across North America – including a date on September 19 at Irving Plaza in New York City. "This feels like an exciting and important creative juncture for me," said Tunstall. "I have something to say, and I've crafted how to say it in a way that feels like the spiritual and sonic follow up to my first album." On June 16, the Scotland-born Tunstall released Golden State, an EP that features "Evil Eye," "All Or

Duelle

Sister duo Duelle has released a new song, “Want It All,” the lead single off their upcoming genre-bending Paragon EP that has already garnered over 200,000 plays since its debut on Trap Nation. An accompanying music video is also and acrossthe-board hit. After director and producer Sam King attended Duelle’s Las Vegas performance and witnessed firsthand how dedicated their fans are, he immediately knew he had to work with the sister act. The result is a video that features cult-like and ritualistic imagery as hardcore fans initiate themselves into the #dmndmob by getting the words tattooed on themselves – a testament that encapsulates their love and devotion to Duelle. "We were feeling the reggaeton vibes and brought that into a big, epic trap drop with a dark, party anthem feel,” said the sisters in a press release about the song “Want It All.” “The lyrics reflect being lit with your squad and just living in the moment ("not worried about the fall right now") and who doesn't want it all and want to accomplish as much as possible in this life ... The lyrics are so universal and speak to all the dreamers out there.” Stream the new works and songs of Duelle at YouTube and SoundCloud.

STUDIO NEWS

Sabella’s ‘Cornish Clock’

As we put this edition of “Studio News” to paper, it was hot, hot, HOT – but not as broiling as area studios and rehearsal facilities. In previous issues, we detailed one of the highest profile recording sessions in the region during the past few months: The Rascals’ (and Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductee) Gene Cornish recorded at Sabella Studios in Roslyn Heights. As a token of his esteem, Cornish gifted Jim Sabella and the crew at the studio a unique 60s-themed clock. The Sabella crew proudly posted a photo of his rock rarity on Instagram, and more of it can be viewed via the sabellastudios.com website. Check out all the big Sabella news there, and also at Twitter.

In our “Demolition” column in this issue, you can read all about Halliday's reworking of his EP Sayonara, which was recorded by Paul Andrejack at PMA Recording Studios in Medford. Andrejack also provided drums on the songs on the EP, which also included vocals by Emi Pellegrino. Learn all about it at hallidaymusic.com; learn more about PMA, one of Long Island's emerging forces in the studio scene, at pmarecordingstudios.com.

When Monty Python’s Eric Idle created the fictional band “Toad The Wet Sprocket” for the program “Rutland Weekend Television” in 1975, he never dreamed that anyone would actually use such a silly name. 1998, Toad would get together sporadically to play shows on a casual basis, but their hardcore fans never gave up hope for a new album. After successful tours in 2006 through 2010, the band finally decided to put the last piece of the puzzle in place, and committed to working together on new music. They also decided to update their classic catalog, and created a new Greatest Hits album, All You Want, which came out in 2011. They’ve been busy on the road and in the studios ever since. Having collaborated for two decades, Rusted Root has honed a combination of musical intuition, freedom and virtuosity, which has allowed them to shape their music into its own distinct vision. Oogee Wawa: New Singles All Summer

The summer is getting quite hot – and area favorites Oogee Wawa are “trying to help you keep cool,” according to a press release, by releasing a new single each month during the 2016 summer season. The band's new single, “Palm Trees,” is the release for July; from its title, you can tell is the type of song that's made for summer fun. Oogee is also on the road throughout the coming weeks – their next area appearances will be August 4 at BrickHouse Brewery in Patchogue, and August 5 at Driftwood in Long Beach. Learn more at oogeewawa.com.

“Our idea is to go to the smallest clubs we can go to,” Taking Back Sunday vocalist Adam Lazzara told Entertainment Weekly about their upcoming follow-up tour in support of their new album Tidal Wave, to be released on September 16. After performing early in the summer co-headlining with Dashboard Confessional, Long Island's TBS will next perform in more intimate rooms. The tour will bring them “home” with shows on September 29 at Irving Plaza, followed by October 4 at Revolution in Amityville. Taking Back Sunday remains Lazzara (vocals), John Nolan (guitars, vocals), Eddie Reyes (guitars), Shaun Cooper (bass), and Mark O’Connell (drums). The upcoming album was produced by Mike Sapone (O'Brother, Mansions) in Charlotte, North Carolina, and mixed by Claudius Mittendorpher (Weezer, Drowners, Ra Ra Riot). The disc, the band's seventh album and their first since 2014's Happiness Is..., picks ups where the previous album left off. “By the time most bands get to this point in their career they are pretty set in what they do, but we were really mindful about approaching our musical ideas differently this time around and staying true to where the five of us are in our lives right now,” Lazzara said. “This album is truly an expression of what Taking Back Sunday is during this snapshot in time as opposed to what we think people expect from our band.” Keep up with TBS via takingbacksunday.com

Who: The veteran Long Island-based heavy rock group Stryctynyne is back, this time with a new album entitled Unfinished Business. For this new release, the four-member band – dummer and vocalist Mike Sabatino (also known as Thunder Kyxx, as the band members have given themselves nicknames), bassist and vocalist Vincent Carollo (Samson James), lead singer John Scacco (also known as Johnny Scac's), and guitarist Mike Paris (G. The album was recorded and mixed at BlokHed Studios and another local studio of note, Ian London Studios. This new effort follows up Stryctnyne's last album, Anthology, a re-release of the band's popular earlier works. The Artists & Their Sound: From their official bio: “After the Anthology CD release with an independent label from California, the band has been performing, writing songs, and recording. Stryctnyne has recently opened for and supported national acts such as Adrenaline Mob, Jake E. The band plans on making appearances playing songs from the new album, along with some classic Stryctnyne songs as always. The band is already writing new material for another full-length album; the recording will start preproduction by the end of this year. “The band's popularity continues to soar, as the group's Facebook page hit 9K fans, and is still growing.” To Learn More About The Artists Or To Purchase Music: Log on to stryctnyne.wix.com/stryctnyne, for find the band at Facebook, Twitter, Tumbler, and Instagram. Those who may be a bit tired of the bombastic shed shows of summer might feel right at home in Westbury for this night of songs about … well, love, including “I'm All Out Of Love,” “Lost In Love,” “The One That You Love,” and all of Russell Hitchcock and Graham Russell's other AM band classics.

It will assuredly be a “Manic Friday” as quite possibly the greatest female rock band of all time once again proves they're far from a nostalgia act. Still releasing exceptional new music and, still fronted by Susanna Hoffs, this is a seasoned yet still vibrant band that should rock the vodka gimlets right off The Paramount's famed seat-side bars. – Bob Smith

Halliday Sayonara Independent Who: If this album looks a bit familiar, it should: It's a remixed version of the EP by the same title released by area artist Halliday last year. William Halliday believes this is an

improved version of his work; there are added background vocals, remixed versions, and a new third song in an instrumental called “Instrumental” to round out the disc. The

album was produced by Paul Andrejack (who also performs on drums and percussion), and the title track features stunning vocals by emerging star Emi Pellegrino, as well as sterling backing by J.D. Leonard on piano and guitar, and Ryan Rhodes on acoustic guitar. Halliday was right; he’s perfected his work. The Songs: “Sayonara,” “Sayonara (Closure),” “Instrumental.” To Purchase This Album Or Get More Information: For a bio and a complete music store, log on to hallidaymusic.com.
