Suicide Squad

The Ides Of August

Yes, it's nearing the end of the summer “blockbuster” film season – yet, the major studios are still banking on a late release or two to slip into the year's top 10-grossing films list. It seems unlikely, but here's a look ahead at some new releases you very well might enjoy – as well as a mind-boggling clinker: Absoutely Fabulous: The Movie (now in theaters), Fox Searchlight: This got off to a better-than-expected start at at the box office, but in a summer full of BANG! BOOM! POW!, the industry wasn't expecting much. Much like the BBC series that inspired it, this franchise has serious legs; it's the Harry Potter of the over-40 set. Bad Moms (July 29), STX Entertainment: Mila Kunis and Kristen Bell are popular but

haven't quite become superstars – but this is the comedy that could propel them into the “A-list.” Can't see this getting past the top five, but it will be a nice diversion for adults. Suicide Squad (August 5), Warner Bros: In a year where Margot Robbie rules the mallplex, this will be the hit that pushes her into mega-stardom. This can'tmiss comic book adaptation about a group of misfit baddies turned into heroes will be big coin as word of mouth will take this one into the

stratosphere – even though the characters aren't nearly as well known as Batman and The X-Men. Robbie plays Harley Quinn, a pinup favorite of comics nerds for ages. Nine Lives (August 5), EuropaCorp: Yes, we've written about this one before, and we are again because we still can't believe it: Kevin Spacey and Christopher Walken – Academy Award winners – join wholesome goddess Jennifer Garner in a comedy about a billionaire who becomes trapped inside the body of the family cat. Somewhere, Don Knotts is smiling … but he's probably the only one who is. Amazingly, this is being billed by its producers as “Summer's Purrfect Family Comedy.” Pass the Gaviscon.

New York Mets manager Terry Collins engaged the media in some gallows humor shortly after learning that starting pitcher Matt Harvey would be lost for the season because of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Harvey’s

season-ending surgery followed third baseman David Wright’s neck procedure that will cause the third baseman to miss the rest of the 2016 season at best, and perhaps cause him to José Reyes retire. “I am afraid to walk past the trainers room. I may put a padlock on the door,” said an exasperated Collins. Though Harvey was not having a great season by any means (as his 4-10 record would attest), there was always the thinking that he would turn it around in his next start. The truth was that he actually pitched better than his record indicated. It was common that the Mets wouldn’t hit on those occasions when

Zimmerman's A Master: One of the top young bowlers in Long Island, Deer Park's Adam Zimmerman, 17 (pictured at far right), earned national acclaim by winning the boy's division of The Teen Masters High School Bowling Championships at Sawgrass Lanes in Tamarac, Florida on July 8. Breanna Clemmer of South Carolina emerged as the winner of the girl's division title. From the PBA's Bill Vint: Zimmerman overtook Dawson Maier of Hampton, Virginia, late in the final round of match play. Protecting a 17-pin lead going into the final game, Zimmerman threw a critical string of four strikes to win that match, 220188, and clinch the boys’ title with a 42-game total of 9,475 pins. Maier, who had led since round two, finished 109 pins behind. “After mixed pairs (round three of qualifying), I probably had the best block I’ve ever had and that’s when I realized I had a chance to catch (Maier),” Zimmerman said of his fourth round, when he averaged 239.8 for six games to advance from seventh to second. “I just needed to make the right moves, and that’s what I did.” Zimmerman, a two-handed player, was bowling in the Teen Masters for the seventh consecutive year. His best previous finish was eighth place in 2015. He earned a $6,000 scholarship for his victory in the 2016 tournament. Strawberry’s Yankees careers in the mid-1990s came up: “They looked as out of place in pinstripes as a pork chop at a bar mitzvah,” Rose quipped. I have my doubts about the veracity of much of Lenny Dykstra’s autobiography, House Of Nails, (Harper Collins), but it is entertaining. In many ways, this book is similar to Chuck Barris’ Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind. It stretches credibility to believe that Dysktra, who freely admits his obsession with money, would give private investigators $500,000 to get dirt on umpires’ private lives so that he could blackmail them into giving him favorable calls. His tale about snorting cocaine with Robert De Niro in the Caribbean doesn’t pass the smell test, either. Dykstra enraged many members of the 1986 Mets by claiming that manager Davey Johnson was an alcoholic. My guess is that Dykstra was angry at Johnson because the manager chose to platoon him with Mookie Wilson in center field, and Dykstra believed that being a part-time player was costing him a chance to land a lucrative long-term contract. I

once heard Dykstra lecture about choosing a stock portfolio a decade ago, and it sounded like the double talk Professor Irwin Corey used to use in his comedy act. Instead of talking about financial statement analysis, Dykstra mumbled incoherently about extraneous things that went into his so-called decisionmaking. The one time in the book that Dykstra is a straight shooter is when he admits that he went into financial ruin by living above his means, such as when he purchased Wayne Gretzky’s estate for $18 million while not having anywhere near the capacity to pay the tremendous mortgage. “A-list” celebrities routinely show up at Citi Field to watch the Mets these days. Carmelo Anthony came by last month to watch batting practice; two weeks ago pop superstars Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas took in a game. Jonas even took a few rips in the Mets’ indoor batting cages. It’s doubtful that the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers are quaking in their Nikes, but the New York Knicks improved the team by signing center Joakim Noah and

guards Courtney Lee and Brandon Jennings, assuming that they can stay healthy. It was initially questionable if inking Noah to a four-year, $72 million contract was a wise use of financial resources, but considering the crazy contracts that even bench players have received during the NBA free agent season, it now seems like a bargain for the Knicks.

one, come all to Trump Taj Mahal to see Nik Wallenda’s Zirkus, a variety show starring wire walker Nik Wallenda and an international troupe of circus performers, now through September 2 at the Taj's Xanadu Theater. “This show is like Cirque du Soleil meets Ringling Brothers meets Blue Man Group,” said Wallenda, a seventh generation member of the family. Known worldwide for his feats upon the high wire, Nik is the holder of 10 World Records. He was the first person to walk a wire across the Grand Canyon and is the only person to walk directly over the precipice of Niagara Falls. BITS & PIECES Lily Meola

Lily Meola:

A Big Year Gets Bigger

Lily Meola has emerged as an artist to watch this year, and it's not over yet: The 21-year-old Maui-based songstress, who has already shared stages with Willie Nelson and other country stars, will spend her summer in Los Angeles writing and recording tracks for the follow-up to her recently released debut album, They Say. In addition, Meola will be among the artists performing at The Ohana Dana Fest on Saturday, August 27 in California. The all-star benefit event – which also features Lana Del Rey, Eddie Vedder, Elvis Costello, Band Of Horses, X, and Mudhoney – will help generate funds to support efforts towards maintaining coastal access in California's south Orange County state beaches. For complete details and ticket information, visit theohanafest.com. Meola, who has dabbled in modeling, is known as a live performer gifted with a unique ability to forge a close connection with her audiences. She has already shared stages with a remarkable array of artists, both as duet partner and special guest, with recent collaborators and tour partners including Jamey Johnson, Steven Tyler, Lee Brice, Shooter Jennings, Graham Parker, Nelson, and many others. Barry Gibb

Les Brers:

Allmans Vets Play On

The group’s gone, but its stars play on: Les Brers – a new band comprised of former Allman Brothers Band members and associates – has announced a string of fall concerts. The group has only performed a handful of dates in 2016 so far, including two benefit shows in their adopted hometown of Macon, Georgia, and at The Allman Brothers Band's Wanee Festival – and the members are excited to get back on the road. The pedigreed group (the name is inspired by the ABB instrumental jam "Les Brers in A-Minor" from the Eat A Peach album) consists of founding ABB drummers Butch Trucks and Jaimoe, longtime members Oteil Burbridge (bass) and Marc Quinones (percussion), former ABB guitarist Jack Pearson, frequent ABB guest Bruce Katz on keyboards, and singer Lamar Williams Jr. (son of the former ABB bassist) joined by guitarist Pat Bergeson (Chet Atkins, Lyle Lovett, Suzy Bogguss). the same gathering of musicians Gibbs assembled for his 2014 solo tour. “This is a dream come true for me,” said Gibb. “It’s a new chapter in my life. I always hoped one day that The Bee Gees would be with Columbia or indeed Sony, so it’s a great joy for me to start again this way with such great people.”

A Columbia Return

Charlotte Berg:

Touring Worldwide

Connecticut-born indie singer/songwriter Charlotte Berg has released a song, "Under The Same Stars" from her upcoming debut album, It’s The Damsel Who Decides. Having toured in Australia and the U.S., Berg hits the road again this summer touring the UK and Sweden in support of her new album, to be released in August. After studying classical piano from

Les Brers age 8 to 18, Berg traded Mozart for Missy Higgins (chart-topping Aussie singer/songwriter), whom she discovered during college, and soon began writing her own songs. She cut her performance teeth while in school and, upon graduating, moved to Melbourne, Australia to throw herself into developing performance chops. She teamed up with New Zealand artist Miles Fahey, and together they garnered a following as the duo Char & Miles over a three year period. Berg

Barry Gibb has signed with Columbia Records and will release his first album with the legendary label, In The Now, this fall. The surviving member of The Bee Gees (formed with his brothers Robin and Maurice) has kept In The Now a family affair, writing the songs with sons Stephen and Ashley. Produced by Barry and co-producer John Merchant, the album is the second solo effort of Gibb’s career, and his first album of all new Sister material since The Bee Sparrow Gees’ final studio album & The in 2001. The 12-track Dirty new album was Birds recorded in Miami with

Dirty Birds Are Back

... & Heading To Boulton

Self-described “Brooklyn hard soul collective” Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds have expanded their 2016 tour, and will debut at The Austin City Limits Festival. It’s been a big year in Sparrow-land, with more than 30 festival performances, the main stage at Mountain Jam, a performance on the NPR Tiny Desk and an upcoming special on “PBS Infinity Hall Live,” set to air nationally on July 22. The tour will bring them to The Boulton Center in Bay Shore on August 18. The band’s upcoming concert film, Fowl Play (due in August on both DVD and streaming) was recorded before a raucous, sold-out crowd in Fairfield, Connecticut, and “was the beautiful, accidental result of an original New Year’s Eve plan gone awry.” The companion live double album is already in stores, featuring new music (“Frankie”) and a rendition of the Aretha Franklin classic “Dr. Feelgood,” which gives lead singer Arleigh Kincheloe plenty of room to wail. As the band’s sixth studio album, the doubledisc reached #1 in the UK for two weeks – where it was the first UK album to qualify for Gold certification based on pre-orders – and peaked at #6 in the U.S. Following the album performances, Yes – Steve Howe (guitar), Jon Davison (vocals), Jay Schellen (filling in for White on drums), Billy Sherwood (bass), and Geoff Downes (keyboards) – will perform a selection of hits. The trek will proceed as originally announced in light of the health update issued on July 18 from drummer Alan White, who recently underwent a successful surgery to repair an injured disc in his lower back. As White noted in a letter penned to the fans on yesworld.com (get more info on the tour there): "I'm eager to be on the road with the band, but also need to ensure my recovery is complete before doing so." Until then, Jay Schellen will sit in and perform with Yes. The album peaked at #2 in the UK and #18 in the U.S., and features the single “Into the Lens.” Released as a double album in December 1973, Tales From Topographic Oceans is a concept album comprised of four interlocking pieces ranging between 18 and 22 minutes,

on USA, which to date seems to be the only cable network that actually knows how to make professional wrestling work … A recent filmed segment on Pop TV's “TNA Impact Wrestling” featuring wrestlers Matt and Jeff Hardy entitled “The Final Deletion” featured a wild scripted battle between the brothers shot like a science-fiction movie. It worked, to an extent – the show was the highest-rated TNA program on Pop since it moved there from Destination America – but the film also received yowls of criticism from serious wrestling fans that it was so over the top that it didn't even resemble professional wrestling. WWE apparently caught wind of the segment's success, and presented an equally ridiculous filmed segment featuring The New Day and The Wyatt Family on the July 11 edition of “Monday Night Raw” on USA Network. A video game-bred younger group of fans might start to tune in to wrestling – but our take is that old school fans that grew up on Andre The Giant and Bob Backlund will likely tune out in droves. Another troubling aspect was that both films were far more violent than typical wrestling matches, which could cause parents concern … NBC's latest attempt at reviving the variety show, the just-concluded “Maya & Marty,” received far better ratings that most critics assumed. A smart casting move was the inclusion of “Saturday Night Live's” Kenan Thompson, every bit as funny as Maya Rudolph and Martin Short during the series’ run.

For example, you'll “catch” a Diglett sitting atop a mailbox. In essence, what once was a children's collectibles and game-playing domain has caught on with adults, yet according to published reports, it's led to organized crimes, traffic accidents, serious injuries, and other problems as people roam the streets. It's hard not to be impressed with the technology; this immerson of the real and virtual worlds – along with upcoming “immersive” devices such as The Occulus Rift – signal that the next big thing in media is already here … The WWE's Smackdown – now rebranded as “Smackdown Live” – Kenan Thompson has debuted on Tuesday nights 20 • Good Times Magazine - July 26 - July 8, 2016

available in stores on September 9. The album is being preceded by the new track release, "What About Your Heart." A series of videos combining studio footage and artist commentary are currently in production and will be released track by track via Wright's official YouTube channel and social media leading up to and after the album's street date. Wright will also make a U.S. headline tour, with Chely dates to be announced Wright soon. Wright's eighth studio album and first new musical release in more than half a decade, I Am The Rain was funded in large part by a recordbreaking Kickstarter campaign; it’s the #1 most funded country music Kickstarter project to date as well as the 11th most successful music campaign in the global benefit corporation's history. The new album was recorded last September at Los Angeles' legendary Sunset Sound studio with multiple Grammy Award-winning producer and artist Joe Henry at the helm, backed by session superstars including engineer/mixer Ryan Freeland, guitarists Adam Levy and Mark Goldenberg, bassist David Piltch, keyboardist Patrick Warren, woodwind multi-instrumentalist Levon Henry, pedal steel guitarist Eric Heywood, and drummer Jay Bellerose. The I Am The Rain album – which follows 2010's Lifted Off The Ground – sees Wright continuing to develop her overall sonic palette. Moreover, the personal songs "Inside," "Where Will You Be," and "Pain" (featuring Emmylou Harris) reveal a new freedom as a songwriter. The album also showcases a number of songs co-written with Henry, among them the provocative "Holy War" and "See Me Home," the latter described by Wright as "the rudder of the whole album." Also: "At The Heart Of Me" (co-written with Henry and Rodney Crowell), as well as a powerful rendition of Bob Dylan's timeless "Tomorrow Is A Long Time" featuring backing vocals from indie-folk duo The Milk Carton Kids.

"I believe I've given birth to a beautiful new baby," Wright said, "and I would like people who see my baby to think it's beautiful too. That's how much this new music means to me. I am so very lucky it all came true." Named by The Academy of Country Music as 1995's "Top New Female Vocalist," Wright has since gone on to stardom: Seventeen top country chart hits followed, including "Shut Up And Drive," "It Was," "Jezebel," "Never Love You Enough," the duet with Radney Foster "Scary Old World," and her #1 smash, "Single White Female." Adding to that list are successful co-writes, such as Clay Walker's Top 10 single "I Can't Sleep" and her duet with Brad Paisley on "Hard To Be A Husband, Hard To Be A Wife." latter earned her a Country Music Association Award's nomination for Vocal Event of the Year; one of several nominations she received from the CMAs. She is also a CMT Flameworthy Award winner, with four #1 music videos on the channel. Wright came out as openly gay in 2010, the first major country music artist to do so. She became an advocate for the LGBT community, with Like Me, her best-selling 2010 Random House memoir, earning acclaim for chronicling of her life and career, from growing up in heartland Kansas to the emotional experience of coming out in public. That year also saw Wright's foundation of the LIKEME Organization, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization devoted to raising awareness at schools, colleges, corporations and in the media about the need for LGBT equality and against classroom and LGBT bullying. The Rides Cruise To The Top – Again: Three years ago, a trio of legends in different ways – CSN founder Stephen Stills, blues/rock guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and former Electric Flag keyboardist Barry Goldberg – formed a new rocking blues band called The Rides, which not only surprised and delighted both rock and blues fans, but reached the top of the charts with their debut album, Can't Get Enough. Now, The Rides have returned with their second album, Pierced Arrow – which once again rocketed to the top of the Billboard Blues Albums chart upon its May release. Produced by the trio and bassist Kevin McCormick, Pierced Arrow — the title of which is a riff on the American classic car of the twenties — also made a solid debut on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart. The new album is a collection of original barnburners, soulful ballads, and covers. The Rides are currently on a national tour, and the trio is about as upbeat as a band can get; said Stills: "A pierced arrow refers to a notch in the feather of an arrow. When you do that and fire, you never know where it's gonna go ... You'll notice it defends itself to the right. There are no more hidden meanings to this album, it's the most fun I've ever had. I've always wanted this blues album, and thanks to KWS and Barry for helping me enjoy it. All we need now is a stadium full of people." Said Shepherd: "The chemistry in this band couldn't be more obvious than in this music which also has been carried onto the stage each night in our shows. We couldn't be happier that Pierced Arrow is being embraced by our fans." Said Goldberg: "So cool! So thrilled to be rockin' the blues.” For Stills, Shepherd, and Goldberg, the process of writing songs from scratch on Can’t Get Enough followed by touring opened an exciting new feeling of intimacy that fueled the creative process of writing and recording the Pierced Arrow album. “We had so much fun playing on stage, we had to do it more,” said Stills.

Foghat We Are” were written by Steinman; the first single to radio, “Going All The Way,” showcases a reunion with vocalists Ellen Foley and Karla DeVito decades after their first performances on the smash hit “Paradise By The Dashboard Light.” “It’s a tribute to Jim Steinman really,” said Meat Loaf of “Lots of freedom. Kenny and I found a wonderfully exciting knack for playing the new effort. “It’s a tribute to both lead at the same time without a real ‘arrangement,’ just sort of instinctive of us and our work together.” guessing, from watching each other’s hands. Neil Young and I used to do this

with Buffalo Springfield. And the grooves are always right on the money, never rushed or jittery.” “For me, it’s a liberating dynamic that’s different from my live solo band because I’m sharing the vocals and guitar playing with Stephen,” said Shepherd. “I love being part of a unit where everyone weighs in with thoughts and opinions.” “It’s so great to be back recording and playing live on this high level again with Stephen and Kenny Wayne, and we’re really excited about the music on ‘Pierced Arrow,’” said Goldberg. “The chemistry is just so good between the three of us. We all have so much respect for each other.” A passion for rock and the blues isn’t the only thing The Rides have in common: Stills and Shepherd also share a mutual love of classic cars (which inspired the band’s name). In that light, it’s not surprising that the title of their new album is a riff on the famed Pierce-Arrow Motor Car Company, a maker of luxury cars in the first four decades of the 20th Century — it was the ultimate musician’s mode of transportation back in the '20s and '30s. Who: Time Passages is a classic rock cover band with deep Long Island roots; the members of the group have performed in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties for almost 30 years. The group recently performed a special weekend show at The Kings Park Farmers Market before an enthusiastic all-ages crowd. The Artists & Their Sound – From Their Bio: “It all started with childhood friends Joe Yulo and Vinny Giovinco. Yulo started playing guitar when he was 10, and his influences ran the gamut from Jimmy Page to Neil Young to Randy Rhoads to Michael Schenker. Giovinco, who also plays guitar, started playing in his late teens, and cites an eclectic set of influences: Young, The Eagles, Squeeze, and Eric Clapton – as well as Yulo himself, who taught Giovinco how to play. “The next decade or two would see the duo develop its craft: Giovinco would augment his guitar playing with vocals and harmonica. Yulo choosing to concentrate on guitar, developing his repertoire from a virtual who's who of guitar heroes. The two played in various bands throughout Nassau and Suffolk, but put their musical dreams on hold while they concentrated on raising their families. It would be almost 20 years after they started jamming together that they would restart their musical ambitions. This time out, they hit the open mic circuit and played any gigs they could get their hands on, including street fairs and charitable events. “It was at this point that they decided to extend their musical family to include a bass player. They also added a percussionist and a female vocalist in Carrie Mangels, who is still a band member, and whose soulful vocals have strengthened the band's set list. As their ambitions continued to grow, the rhythm section of Vic Perosi (bass) and Bill Kedenberg (drums) were added, who both played with Yulo in a previous cover band. “Today, they are a rock cover tour de force, concentrating on the music of the last several decades. They pride themselves on playing songs that you don't typically hear from your average cover band – tunes that people have been wanting to hear live but typically don’t. Time Passages is a band in demand, whose word of mouth following, and social media presence have helped spread their message: Play feel good music for the masses.” To Learn More About & To Contact The Artists: Like them on Facebook at Facebook.com/TresHombresAcoustic; follow them on Twitter: @timepassagesny. 22 • Good Times Magazine - July 26 - August 8, 2016

HBO series "Vinyl," which has been canceled after only one season. Yes, there were inaccurate events depicted (The Mercer Arts Center did not collapse while The New York Dolls were doing a show; Andy Warhol was not verbal, as he was so badly portrayed; and the "Lou Reed" character? Ugh!). However, “Vinyl” did manage to educate people about the record business in the early 1970s, along with the seamy underside of the business (yes, that's real. To my delight, much of the action was centered around the nightclub where all the scenes began: Max's Kansas City. The show depicted Warhol and The Velvet Underground hanging out there. They portrayed John Lennon and May Pang's affair (when he strayed from Yoko Ono), much of which took place at Max's. They also showed the early version of The Wailers with Bob Marley playing there (their opening act was a new guy named Bruce Springsteen, and together, the bill of Springsteen and The Wailers pulled in a “crowd” of about 70 people). The good news is that, for once, Max's didn't get thrown

that's the title! Along with its enjoyable foreword, the book is no text and all action – hundreds of blackand-white photographs of the early days of the scene; you get to see what Billy Idol and Adam Ant looked like before they got their acts together. The real stars are the kids in the clubs, creating looks and styles that hipsters still try to copy in 2016.The HBO’s photographs are ‘Vinyl’ by Derek Ridgers, who was there as a fan long before iPhones and selfies existed, and he did indeed capture the essence of it all. You can feel the heat and the sweat of everyone shoved together in front of the old school stages of the era. What a trip! It's a must; issued by Carpet Bombing Culture (yes, that's the publisher!), this new release should be in your local book store. If not, why not? Speaking of punk, RIP to the

under the train by producers who were totally unhip and thereby made everything center around CBGB because it was easier; CBGB was going to be introduced the show's second season, which is not going to happen. So farewell, “Vinyl,” and Vive Le Max's (hey, even Urban Outfitters has joined the craze and is now selling a Max's 1976 shirt for just under $40). Punk on!

Mark Z: Spiritual Sickness ... & A Bent For Sharing

Veteran drummer Mark Zapata – best known for his stint with metal mavens Killjoy, and better known at Mark Z – is now playing with the band Spiritual Sickness. “We have played many great shows, and have gone on two tours of the northeastern United States,” reported the powerful basher. “We were all set to embark on a tour that would have taken us up the east coast and into Canada, but unfortunately medical issues forced us to drop from that tour, and we are heading out again in August. The band is strong and we are ready to record a brand new record.” Find the band at Facebook.com/spiritualsicknessmetal.
