Heroic First Responder In Ronkonkoma
Barry Donadio will appear live for a book signing on Saturday, July 16 at 6 pm at a suite in The Clarion Hotel in Ronkonkoma. Admission is free; information is at (202) 631-1153. Donadio, a TWA Flight 800 first responder, will host a memorial hospitality suite; the event is open to the public, and will honor the victims of the flight crash (a moment of silence will be part of the event). The author will also sign copies of his book, TWA Flight 800 First Responder Witness Account, where he offers his account of the events that unfolded during rescue operations. A new yet already a favorite area exhibit – “Motorcycles & The Open Road” – is on display through September 5 at The Ward Melville Heritage Organization Educational & Cultural Center in Stony Brook. The Center has brought back this exhibit for its third year thanks to its popularity among the region’s motorcycle enthusiasts. The exhibit features new collections, memorabilia, an outdoor car showcase, and more. The exhibit focuses on the evolution of the motorcycle from a 1904 Rambler to the popular 1975 Triumph, and more. 2016 America, should easily be one of the biggest hits of this summer blockbuster season. We will all have to wait until Friday; those who have seen it before its release – published reports claim original star Dan Aykroyd loves this new film, while Kevin Smith ripped its trailer to smithereens – are all over the map. However, with its toy tie-ins, non-stop hype, and guest appearances by its stars all over the media world, this can't fail, which tells us how and why November 8, 2016 might be the worst day in the history of our union – despite facts, figures, and doubts, many folks simply do whatever they're told to do, even when plunking down $12 for a ticket and another 18 smackers for Milk Duds, popcorn,

t’s a hot summer, but a cool film festival is on its way to Staller Center for the Arts at Stony Brook University: The 21st Stony Brook Film Festival screens from July 21 through 30. The festival of new independent films showcases a selective compendium of features, documentaries, and shorts. THE STONY BROOK FILM FESTIVAL: 21 Years Of Cinema Excellence
European directors representing their films – János Edelényi, director of The Carer, will be on hand for Opening Night, and Hannes Holm, director of A Man Called Ove, is attending Closing Night’s screening. The Carer from Yellow Affair and The Hungarian National Film Fund is the Opening Night east coast premiere. It’s a dramatic feature starring Brian Cox and newcomer Coco König in a film that tells the story of a young Hungarian refugee who becomes the caregiver
and a sugared soda the The Shallows size of a recycling bin. Satire aside, its hard to fault the casting of this comedy/action film; Kristen Wiig is one of the truly gifted comedians of our time, and Kate McKinnon picked right up where Wiig left off on “Saturday Night Live.” Jones and McCarthy are two of a kind; they can bring belly laughs just by sporting a certain look on their faces. However, the advanced notes we're getting is that these talented leads become dwarfed by all the special effects and over-the-top action; the stuff is so wild and eye-jarring, even in the advertisements, it makes the original Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man from the original 1984 film seem like a cheesy 1960s Casper The Friendly Ghost TV cartoon. Some film fans are bemoaning that it's a female cast this time instead of the male leads so many fans are familiar with; others are objecting to certain aspects of Jones' character. Great; controversy over a movie that just about as deep as The Three Stooges Meet Hercules. Yep; nobody can agree on anything these days, which again explains the sad state of this year's elections. Who ya gonna call?
The Shallows
Starring Blake Lively, Brett Cullen Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra of an aging, temperamental actor. Closing Night brings the east coast premiere of A Man Called Ove, a story set in Sweden directed by Hannes Holm and written by Hannes Holm and Fredrik Backman, the author of the novel by the same name. After she crashes into his mailbox, an unexpected friendship develops No Pay, Nudity between pregnant Parvaneh and neighborhood crank Ove. In addition, two world premieres are American indies: The Father And The Bear, written and directed by John Putch, features Wil Love and David DeLuise; it screens on July 22 at 7 pm. No Pay, Nudity screens as a world premiere on Tuesday, July 26, with director Lee Wilkof and actor Nathan Lane expected to attend to represent the film and take part in a Q&A. Gabriel Byrne (The Usual Suspects, In Treatment) plays comically against type, portraying an actor, Lester Rosenthal, who A Man Called Ove has lost his way with his career, his family, and his friends. Lane (The Producers, The Birdcage), along with Frances Conroy (Six Feet Under, The Aviator) and Boyd Gaines, portray his fellow thespians, all waiting for the right role to come along as they hang out in the Actors Equity lobby.

Ombra Films This unexpected hit thriller is as tight and taut as its lead, Blake Lively. In a performance that will certainly make an A-list film star out of the former “Gossip Girl” actress, this simple yet gripping story of a solitary surfer being tageted by a great white shark is what most action films used to be: A simple story told well. Indeed, the revelation here is the likable Lively, who spends much of the film alone onscreen, much like Tom Hanks in Cast Away. Director Jaume Collet-Serra offers turgid, intense scenes that brought gasps and shrieks from audience members during our screening. Clearly a “little film that could,” The Shallows is the sleeper success of 2016, proving a truth: Offer intelligent filmmaking and a character an audience can identify with, and the rest will take care of itself. Director Lee Wilkof noted: "I have been an actor for 43 years. I love what I do. I love the people I work with. No Pay, Nudity is about these people. We live in a time where instant fame is often the measure of success and a body of work accounts for very little. Making No Pay, Nudity helped me rediscover that as Winston Churchill said, ‘Success is moving from disappointment to disappointment without losing enthusiasm.’” Other American features to be shown at The Stony

Mets general Sandy Alderson stated that “(Reyes) has gone, and continues to undergo, counseling. I believe that he deserves a second chance” in a press release announcing the Reyes-Mets reunion. Most observers concur with Alderson that the affable Reyes, who has a reservoir of goodwill in Queens, should get the benefit of the doubt. From Farmingdale to Award Winner: Fresh from his victory in May at The PBA50 BVL Open, veteran Pete Weber was named the May 2016 Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association, of which we are affiliated. Weber won twice in the month in the midst of a record PBA50 streak of four straight tournament wins. Weber's May wins were in the PBA50 Mooresville Ford Open, followed by his memorable win at the BVL. For the second win in the month, Weber downed a game Brian LeClair of upstate New York to take home the trophy. With the second win of the month, the 1999 PBA Hall of Famer tied a record winning three consecutive PBA50 wins, first set by Tom Baker in 2006.

The Yankees celebrated the 60th anniversary of Mickey Mantle’s “triple crown” season with a Mantle bobblehead giveaway. The Yankees invited the star’s sons, David and Danny, to attend the game and toss out ceremonial first pitches. The Mantles also met with the media to discussed their father’s legacy, and both were surprised to learn that former Major League Baseball Players Association executive director Marvin Miller cited Mickey Mantle as the key to the success of the players’ union when it was formed 50 years ago. In his 2004 autobiography, A Whole Different Ballgame, Miller knew that Mickey carried a lot of weight with his peers. Miller was worried that Mantle would think of himself as a company man along with the fact that he was from ultra-conservative Oklahoma, a state that certainly was never a hotbed for organizing labor. Miller was understandably ecstatic when the Mick put his arms around him and said “Listen to this guy, fellas!” when he was addressing the Yankees players during spring training in 1966. I asked the Mantle brothers if their father ever speculated about
how his career would have been affected by free agency: “Dad loved being a Yankee and I doubt that he would have ever have considered leaving,” David unequivocally stated. Lenny Dykstra didn’t talk to the media during the recent 1986 Mets team reunion at Citi Field. The press was informed by Mets’ VP of communications, Jay Horwitz, that it was the decision of HarperCollins, the publisher of his then about-to-be released memoir, House Of Nails. That seemed strange, because publishers would normally crave the publicity. Fast forward about a month, and the reason became quite clear. HarperCollins knew that Dykstra trashed a lot of his teammates and his manager, Davey Johnson. Its executives clearly did not want to put their author on the defensive while ruining a feel-good occasion. The New York Knicks made a splash the day before the NBA Draft by swinging a trade with the Chicago Bulls that netted guard Derrick Rose. Knicks president Phil Jackson did not give up draft choices to acquire him, and Rose has only a year left on his current contract. I will, however, miss Robin

The wealth of wineries in Long Island’s North Fork are celebrating the summer of 2016 with new seasonal blends as well as live music events, dinners, and a variety of tastings sure to please area wine fanciers. Jamesport Vineyards (1216 Main Road, Jamesport) has offered a summer release of its Rosé that is partially barreled and made predominantly with Syrah: the 2015 Cinq Blanc. The 2014 Sauvage is another summer release and a limited production By Erica Finocchio Reserve Sauvignon Blanc, which is 100 percent barrel aged and fermented. "Food and wine – you can’t have one without the other," said Dean Babier, Jamesport Vineyards Jamesport’s winemaker. "Our 2015 Rosé has depth, which makes it a pleasant food wine." Jamesport Vineyards won Best Food and Wine Experiences from the Zagat Survey; guests can enjoy “Dinner on the Vines” on July 14, August 11, and October 13. Jazz performances add to the enjoyment on July 30 and August 27 at 7 pm. Pindar Vineyards in Peconic recently released its 2015 Peacock Chardonnay, 2014 Riesling, and 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as its new 2015 Viognier and 2014 Syrah wines. Also upcoming is a new release of its 2015 Rosé. "Pindar Vineyards offers over 20 different wines in various styles from dry to sweet, sparkling to dessert," said Michelle Martin, Pindar’s marketing and hospitality manager. "Our biggest priority is to introduce these wines to new guests and help them find their favorite. We pride ourselves on our friendly service paired with fantastic Pindar Vineyards wines." Pindar Vineyard’s weekend wine tours run on alternate Saturdays through September 3. Also featured is live music on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 5 pm; Tommy Sullivan (Johnny Maestro & The Brooklyn Bridge) performs on July 30, July 31, and August 27 and 28. Romeo's Dream will perform rock and Top 40 hits on July 17, August 13, and August 21. Mark Eisemann will perform on July 16 and August 27. Bedell Cellars is located at 36255 Route NY-25 in Catchogue; its seasonal wine offered this summer is its Taste Rosé (left), a blend of merlot, cabernet franc, and cabernet sauvignon with dry aromatic white varietals like Sauvignon Blanc, which recently scored an impressive 90 points from The Wine Advocate. Another seasonal wine is Viognier, a sparking Rosé blended from merlot and cabernet franc. A Vineyard dinner at Bedell is offered on August 21 at 5 pm, which will showcase winemaker Richard Olsen-Harbich. Martha Clara Vineyards in Riverhead offers two popular wines for the summer: The Sauvignon Blanc, consisting of 90 percent Sauvignon Blanc and 10 percent Semillon, and the Northern Soltice Rose, a blend of 90 percent Rosé, seven percent Chardonnay, and three percent Reisling. "The summertime is the best time of the year to visit the east end and the bounty of the food and Martha Clara Vineyards wine to be had," said winemaker and general manager Juan Eduardo Micieli-Martinez said. The big annual Martha Clara music event is The Fold Festival, curated by Nile Rodgers, on August 12; national artists will include Ke$ha, The Village People, Earth Wind & Fire, Joe Jonas, DJ Cassidy, DJ Prince, Emin, and more. Macari Vineyards is a family-owned winery founded by Joseph Macari Sr., his wife Katherine, and Jospeth Macari Jr. There are two tasting rooms; one is located at 150 Bergen Avenue in Mattituck, with the other at 24385 Main Road in Cutchogue. Gabriella Macari is the daughter of Joseph Macari Jr., and handles public relations at the winery: "Our mission is to create high quality, age-worthy, world-class wines. My father, Joseph, is specifically committed to improving soils and energy of the farm through the addition of compost from our cows. He truly believes that great wine begins in the vineyard." The newest release is the 2015 Rosé, which is a blend of 42 percent Merlot, 27 percent Cabernet Franc,11 percent Pinot Noir, 10 percent Pinot Meunier, and 10 percent Chardonnay. Shinn Estate Vineyards & Farmhouse in Mattituck is offering both white and red wine for its new summer blends: The white wine is the 2015 Coalescence, a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Riesling that is stainless steel fermented. It's now officially summer ... outdoor shows are heating up our area … and musicians are recording national releases all over the place, all emanating from Long Island recording studios and rehearsal houses. For instance: Freya Wilcox & The Howl returned to Sabella Studios in Roslyn Heights in late May and early June to work on their upcoming album. Self-described as “cutting blues/punk with a road rash howl” and with a decidedly rock edge, the band – Wilcox on guitars and vocals, Craig Shayon bass and vocals, and C.J. Dunaieff on drums – have stormed out of Brooklyn to become one of the hottest bands in the region, already critics' darlings with a burgeoning area fan base. Those quibbles aside, this Fiddler still touches our hearts and minds with its artistry and forceful storytelling. In creating the musical in 1964, Robbins seamlessly integrated story, dance, and song into an organic whole. Joseph Stein’s intelligent, affecting book retains the wisdom, wit and humanity of Sholem Aleichem’s stories. Jerry Bock’s tuneful score overflows with catchy melodies and buoyant showbiz tunes. Alexandra Silber, Samantha Massell, and Melanie Moore, who play Tevye’s oldest daughters, sing beautifully and act with great passion. Jessica Hecht as his longsuffering, tart-tongued wife Golde delivers her lines with droll irony. The daughters’ diverse suitors, a tailor (Adam Kantor), a revolutionary (Ben Rappaport), and a Russian soldier (Nick Rehberger) are well defined. Most importantly, Tevye’s story still resonates with our nation of immigrants.

Stop And Stare Media And Management (stopanstaremm.com) and Dean James Silva have announced the release of the new album The Soundtrack Of My Life by Silva and his band. The title cut from the soon-to-be released CD is “I Hate You,” a rock & roll tune about the trial and tribulations of relationships. After decades of touring, Dean James Silva, the songwriter for his band, took a long break from the music scene as he battled addition to opiates. Since his return about a year ago, “The DJSB,” as some call it, has exploded onto the local music scene; the group recently headlines 89 North Music Venue in Patchogue. Having played in bands since the age of 15, Silva is a "battle-tested veteran of a musician with a relentless hunger to pursue his musical endeavors,” according to a press release. “The multi-instrumentalist has conquered substance abuse and the personal demons that go hand in hand with it. That struggle had sidelined Dean for the past 20 years ... He's back.” Silva has a new management deal in place with Stop & Stare Management, and a new working relationship with OmniPop and his Billy Joel tribute band (Angry Young Men). “His lyrics and music could only have been written as the by-product of one's darkest years and experiences,” touted the press release on the songs contained in Silva’s new album. “It's a very personal look into the frailties of the human experience gone badly, but don't think for a moment that this composer is a one trick pony by any means. His songs also scream of hope, faith, and the ‘light at the end of the tunnel; no matter how long and dark the tunnel may have seemed at times. become so big, so quickly. If a radio station became popular (think AM 77WABC in the '60s and '70s), the majority of listeners listened to and conformed to the dictates of that station. FM album radio followed (WNEW-FM, WBAB-FM), and bands or artists lived or died by getting or not getting played on those stations. There were no other avenues for a “tidal wave” effect (as happened with The Beatles) to happen. Everyone listened to the same radio station, read the same mags (16 gave way to Rolling Stone by the end of the 60s), and wanted to be grooving to what everyone else was grooving to.

We shall try one last time to wrap a ribbon around the box and send it on its way: The reality is that there is no apparent desire on the part of the current music audience for such a universal artist or band to serve as the focal point of the pop universe. If such an act were to exist (which is unlikely), the process necessary to reach the delirious levels of world-changing superstardom cannot proceed, as it did for five decades (the 1950s through the 1990s). For starters, there is the subject of “need,” as in a gaping space that is waiting to be filled. Need, in this case, was dictated by the birth of teen culture in the 1950s; the end of World War II and a prosperous America allowed its teenagers to enjoy luxuries and freedoms that other generations before them were denied – they suddenly had cars, transistor radios, healthy allowance money (for hair products, clothes, hula hoops, record players, andrecords to go along with them), and a Madison Avenue business model based on trends and fads aimed exclusively at them. Mindset was the most potent factor. The '50s rebellion led to a liberation framework; young people wanted their freedom, and the music of the '50s was the rebellious soundtrack. The influx of R&B made the young hip to the plight of people of color, and the '60s gave birth to folk, rock, and soul music fueling the young to champion civil rights, as they integrated their music collections (as I used to say, “make mine Motown!”). The '70s saw females take up the banner, and again, whether it was Helen Reddy going to #1 with "I Am Woman" or The Runaways becoming the first all-female rockers, the revolution continued. The '80s saw the LGBT banners enter the picture, and by the '90s, most of the high-profile battles had been fought and won, with artists and music becoming totally associated with all these revolutions and movements. Pop and rock meant something, and represented something – but by the 1990s, the Internet appeared, music and video was online, glee club TV shows beginning with "American Idol" had removed and replaced "American Bandstand," and the overall pop music scene resembled, and continues to resemble, the pre-rock & roll1950s when singers sang songs, everyone heard the songs but didn't always know the singer, and it was diversion, not revolution. Adele is Patti Page and Taylor Swift is Teresa Brewer, which is all fine and good, pure pop for purely pop purposes – but please stop waiting for the next Beatles. The gatekeepers don't have gates any more.
