Brother Jimmy’s Serves Righteous BBQ

Okay ... let’s get some of our prejudices out of the way. When we heard that Brother Jimmy's BBQ was opening an outlet in the casual section of a mall, we immediately thought, “Oh, no, here we go again.” We've been on the wrong end of too much swine cooked at unlikely mall outlets. Brother Jimmy's, in its newest incarnation at the Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City, overcame the location to render a very good BBQ experience. The very meaty, very tender, and the chain has multiple locations in crust (bark) was mouth-watering Manhattan, Connecticut, and good. We could have easily Florida, as well as the Carolinas; many of the outlets are full-service knocked off a few pounds of them given the chance. restaurants. Pop artists just can’t get much hotter: Stefani’s third full-length solo album, This Is What The Truth Feels Like (featuring the gold single “Used To Love You”) was released March 18 on Interscope Records, and it was the first of her albums to debut at the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. Stefani also appeared on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” on April 2 as a guest performer, and she returned to NBC’s “The Voice” on April 19 to perform her new single “Misery” during the broadcast. Carolina slaw, and a fine banana pudding for dessert. Also on the menu were candied yams and collard greens. Prices at Jimmy’s at Roosevelt Field were quite reasonable considering its location, near Neiman Marcus and other high-end stores. Jimmy's motto is “Put Some South In Yo' Mouth,” which is a good line – even though it originated with The Georgia Pig in Brunswick in the 1970s. “Righteous” BBQ describes it even better. Brother Jimmy's is located in the new Roosevelt Field dining district. We hope that they import some of their other signature items from the Manhattan locations; otherwise, a safari to the City is in order.

Earlier this year, the superstar made history on the 58th annual Grammy Awards telecast by performing the first music video ever created on live television. Sponsored by Target and directed by Sophie Muller, the live music video marked the national television debut of “Make Me Like You.” Stefani has achieved worldwide success as a performer, songwriter, and recording artist, selling more than 30 million albums worldwide with No

Doubt and as a multi-platinum solo artist. She is the recipient of three Grammy Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, one American Music Award, one Brit Award, and two Billboard Music Awards. Stefani released two highly successful solo albums – Love. Angel.Music.Baby and The Sweet Escape – featuring hit singles “Rich Girl,” “Sweet Escape,” “What Are You Waiting For?” and “Hollaback Girl,” a #1 single she recorded with Pharrell Williams that became the first digital download to sell more than one million copies in the United States. In the fall of 2015, Stefani returned as a coach for the ninth season of “The Voice” and released the single “Used To Love You.” In addition to her singer/songwriting career, Stefani isrecognized as a trendsetter and accomplished designer within the fashion industry, having launching several successful brands including L.A.M.B., Harajuku Lovers, DWP, and GX. FILM

By Lloyd Carroll

Mother's Day

Starring Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts, Timothy Olyphant, Kate Hudson, Shay Mitchell, Jason Sudeikis Directed and co-written by Garry Marshall Open Road Films Director and writer Garry Marshall made a name for himself creating such beloved ABC sitcoms as “Happy Days” and “The Odd Couple,” and years later found success on the big screen with Pretty Woman, Beaches, and other romcoms. In recent years, Marshall has carved out a niché making romantic comedies that have numerous storylines and characters that center around a holiday; his previous hits were New Year's Eve and Valentine's Day. Five years later, he's back with this new film. The story takes place in Atlanta, as Sandy (Aniston), an interior designer and a mom of two young boys, is blindsided when her ex, Henry (Olyphant), informs her that he has eloped with an attractive 20-something. Sandy’s neighbor, Jesse (Hudson), has a physician husband and a son. According to this hard-to-believe plot, Jesse has never told her parents, a pair of ultra-conservative Texans, about her family because they would give her grief about marrying an Indian-American. Another thread in the film is a young couple

HEADLINERS

scraping by with restaurant serving jobs (Britt Robertson and Jack Whitehall). They have been together for five years and have a young daughter. What makes Zack depressed is that he can’t understand why she won’t accept his marriage proposals. In a subplot, Zack aspires to be a comedian, and his material is the most G-rated in the history of standup. The most lugubrious storyline has the normally funny Sudeikis playing against type as a grieving widower, Bradley, who is raising two daughters. He met his wife in the Marine Corps, where she apparently made a career before being killed in action. In a flashback scene, an uncredited Jennifer Garner plays the wife; she was wise in requesting that her name not be used in the credits. Even worse:

Roberts has a thankless role as an HSN host who is a major celebrity to those who live to order merchandise from home shopping networks. There are some positives: Jon Lovitz, out of sight for too long, is back as an Atlanta comedy club impresario. Another Marshall regular, Hector Elizondo, shines as Roberts’ character’s manager. It's painful to knock Mother’s Day, because Hollywood doesn’t make many films aimed at the forty-plus demographic. Yet, the corny dialog and contrived plot devices caused a lot of involuntary laughter from the audience at the press screening we attended. If you want to do something nice for your own mom, don’t take her to see this.

Prince’s unexpected death sent shock waves through music fans, particularly those who grew up listening to his music. Major League Baseball players know pop music pretty well, if for no other reason they like to use theme

music over the public address system when the come to bat. “I never got to see Prince perform live,” said New York Mets outfielder Curtis Granderson. “My sister did, and I’ve always been a bit jealous of her for that. My favorite song of his was ‘When Doves Cry.” Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips made no secret of the fact that he was a big fan of the pop superstar. “I never got to see Prince when I was growing up because I couldn’t afford the price of a concert ticket,” said Phillips. “I loved all of his songs, but particularly ‘Beautiful Girl.’ This past weekend when we were home, I made sure that the public address team

It was a sight both telling and appreciated: A blue Toyota circled around the back of the parking lot at Farmingdale Lanes, finally landing a parking spot after about 10 minutes of searching. As a couple emerged from the car, the wife turned to her husband and marveled: “I've never seen this many people here before.” Such was the turnout for the Pro-Am segment of the PBA50 Johnny Petraglia BVL Open on May 7, an event so well-attended that it once again proved that bowling is back in a big way – and it all came at the best possible time. The PBA50 (formerly Seniors tour) event also served as a fundraiser for the Bowlers To Veterans Link, the bowling industry charity that raises about $1 million per year for the Veterans Administration. On this day, a busy John LaSpina, the president of Maple Family Centers and the board chairman of BVL, beamed with pride as he showed a photograph of a wheelchair-bound veteran who received an elaborate tablet-run device that now enables the former serviceman to control many aspect of his life with the simple push of a button. “It's such a special event,” said LaSpina, who with his son, Joe, operates Rockville Centre Lanes, Coram County Lanes, JIB Lanes, and Farmingdale Lanes in this area.

played a Prince record every time I came to the plate.” The Mets honored the music star on their first game back at Citi Field following Prince’s death. During the intrusive “Kiss Cam” segment where couples are strong-armed into displays of public affection, Prince’s 1986 hit, “Kiss,” blared over the PA system. Cynics might suggest that it’s not officially Mets’ season until Travis d’Arnaud goes on the disabled list, which happened once again as he was diagnosed with a strained right rotator cuff. One of the biggest knocks on the catcher is his inability to throw out opposing runners who try to steal bases. In the game before he was sent to the DL, the Reds stole five bags. In fairness, pitcher Noah Syndergaard did little to help d’Arnaud as Brandon the hurler rarely Phillips glanced over to first base after speedster Billy Hamilton walked, let alone throw over to first baseman Lucas Duda to keep the speedster a big closer to the bag. The catcher is a hard worker, and there is little doubt that he hurt his shoulder trying to put too much oomph on his throws to second base. He has proven to be a good hitter during his brief big league career, but “When we give a check to veterans and we know we're brightening their lives, that's what it's all about.” Learn more about the amazing work done by the BVL at bowlforveterans.org. The charity was the focal point of these four days of competition in Farmingdale, but it was pure fun that led bowling fans to bowl alongside such PBA greats as Walter Ray Williams Jr., Amleto Monacelli, Parker Bohn III, and Pete Weber during the Pro-Am. Following two squads, there was the second annual “Clash Of The Legends” featuring the above-mentioned pros, won by Williams, who after the match announced the $2,000 winner's prize was being donated to BVL in a agreement made by the participants. The pros, including tournament namesake and bowling Hall of Fame member Johnny Petraglia, competed with veterans from all the military branches in another charity match that followed. “I’ve seen a lot of changes in the sport over the years, but the essence of the game is still

Travis d’Arnaud

has gotten off to a slow start this season. It’s only natural to wonder if his trouble cutting down opposing runners affects his offense. No one can accuse Mets general manager Sandy Alderson of overlooking a thing: At the end of April, I asked if he was following the Washington Nationals, who had gotten off to a torrid start, or if he was ignoring the standings since it was early in the season and chose to concentrate on his own team. The veteran front office professional cited chapter and verse of everything that happened in the Nats’ there,” Petraglia told the PBA before the tournament. “After all these years, I still get a lot of joy competing. Maybe as much as I ever did, but even though I’ve had some good tournaments lately, I’m not kidding myself that all of the stars are going to have to line up if I’m going to win again.” The BVL Open, won by left-hander Mike Scroggins in 2015 at this same center, drew a huge field of more than 100 PBA50 members and amateurs, including Scroggins and former Major League Baseball pitcher John Burkett. In the end, however, it was Pete Weber continuing his cuttent dominance on the PBA50 tour, winning his recordsetting third consecutive title by defeating a game right hander Brian LeClair of upstate New York (who has been the proprietor of a pro shop at Catskill’s Hoe Bowl Lanes); LeClair, who had been spectacular throughout the qualifying and had a great look during the finals match play, had climbed the finals stepladder to earn a spot in the championship match. The event once again raised about $50,000 for BVL and will return to Farmingdale Lanes again next year, according to John LaSpina. After the smoke cleared – and we think back to the packed parking lot and hundreds of fans having the time of their lives – we're left with that important secondary story: Bowling is, indeed, back in a big way, and the sport's fathers and stars couldn’t have done a better job making sure we all realize it.

16-inning win over the Twins the day before: “I’m mildly aware of what they are doing,” he deadpanned. SNY Mets play-by-play voice Gary Cohen asked me to clarify a statement he made (and one that I wrote about) during the Phillies-Mets series that kicked off the 2016 Mets home season. Cohen stated that the Phillies were “tanking.” The fighting Phils wound up taking two out of three from the Mets that weekend. “I didn’t mean to imply that the players were tanking,” said Cohen. “They always want to win. I was talking about the organization.” Something is working for Philadelphia since

Cohen made his remarks; the Phillies’ record was well above .500 as we went to press, and the team was actually in contention through early May. Is goaltender Henrik Lundqvist destined to be the New York Rangers’ answer to New York Knicks legend Patrick Ewing – a great performer who couldn’t bring home a championship? It’s not surprising that the Rangers went out fairly quickly in this year’s NHL playoffs. They lost in the Stanley Cup Final in 2014, and went pretty deep last year losing in a draining seven-game Eastern Conference Final to the Tampa Bay Lightning. The overrated sports columnist and personality Bill Simmons returns to television on June 22 with the debut of his HBO series, “On Any Given Wednesday.” A network press release touts that we’ll get to hear Simmons’ take on sports and pop culture every week. My – how have we survived until now? Simmons was instrumental in creating the highbrow yet poorly viewed sports website Grantland that turned into a money pit for ESPN. John Skipper, CEO of the “Worldwide Leader in Sports,” pulled the plug on Grantland last year. Skipper will also have to find someone to fill Skip Bayless’ shoes on “First Take,” ESPN’s contrived morning sports debate show. Bayless became the guy sports fans loved to hate because he loved to play the contrarian to conventional wisdom. Bayless swore to me at last year’s ESPN Upfront that he and partner Stephen A. Smith don’t plan their shtick in advance: “People would pick that up right

away,” he told me. Nonetheless, I can’t help but believe that Bayless loved being the Simon Cowell of sports commentary. Of greater concern to ESPN executives has to be the departure of longtime NBA and “Monday Night Football” anchor Mike Tirico, who is jumping to NBC. The thinking is that Tirico will be the eventual successor to Al Michaels on “Sunday Night Football.” Tirico and his partner, Jon Gruden, were always a fun listen on an autumn Monday night. It will be like old times for baby boomers who grew up watching Marv Albert call NBA games on NBC back in the day. Albert, who has been away from the network since 2002, will handle play-by-play duties for Team USA men’s basketball during the Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics. CBS will broadcast Marv pro boxing in Albert prime time for the first time since 1978 (Leon Spinks’ upset over Muhammad Ali). The June 25 welterweight championship bout of Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter won’t generate huge buzz, but should be an exciting fight.

Sir Cadian Rhythm On Baldwin Film Soundtrack

The Long Island-based Sir Cadian Rhythm’s “Run Around Town,” featured on its debut EP, is included in the new film Back In The Day, starring Alec Baldwin, Danny Glover, and Mike Tyson. The film is scheduled to premiere on May 21. SCR formed in 2014, and consists of Jack Weppler (vocals), Richie Cluxton (bass), Alex Laudani (guitar), Matt Carlin (keyboards, horns, and vocals), and Micah Cowher (drums). The group’s second EP, Identity Crisis, will be released on streaming services this summer. The group’s first EP is a bonafide hit; it can be heard on streaming services, 107.1 FM (The Peak), and other Long Island radio stations. The group has already appeared at such top area venues as Huntington’s The Paramount, as well as The Great South Bay Music Festival. It will perform on the main stage at The Montauk Music Festival on May 20. More: Facebook.com/sircadianrhythm.

Already Soaring: The McLovins At Mercury

Co-managed by Long Island natives Michael Novick (the original producer of “Glee”) and two-time Grammy-winning producer Bill Sherman (Hamilton, “Sesame Street”), the hot new band McLovins will headline at New York City’s trendy Mercury Lounge on Saturday, May 21 at 8 pm; tickets are at ticketmaster.com. The group “is a soulful rock band that complements a youthful and infectious energy with seasoned and diverse musical talent,” according to a press release. Influenced by The Band, The Flaming Lips’ bassist Jason Ott, and Steely Dan, the group – drummer and percussionist Jake Huffman, guitarist Justin Berger, and keyboardist Atticus Kelly – combine their progressive songwriting skills with ’70s-inspired extended improvisations and instrumental prowess. McLovins has appeared at The Gathering of the Vibes, Mountain Jam, The Peach Festival, and The Nateva Music Festival. They have also performed with Buddy Guy, George Porter Jr., Oteil Burbridge, and Robert Randolph. Learn more at mclovins.band. 22 • Good Times Magazine - May 17 - 30, 2016

The Hall & Heroes: The latest Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductees are now enshrined, and we, of course, watched the show. As usual, there are opinions flying all over, but here are mine: The most controversial entry was N.W.A, the most prolific gangsta rap group to ever hit the big time. Some fans beliieve that rap

they certainly deserve to be there; money, indeed, is the name of the game – and if that's the case, it was no problem for the members of Deep Purple, who were welcomed in by Lars Ullrich of Metallica. Just about every living member of Purple showed up, with the exception of Long Island's own Ritchie Blackmore, who seemed to be cooling his jets in Port Jefferson. Blackmore certainly was spoken of with the reverence he deserves, as he had a huge influence he had on the band, and on rock & roll itself. One of my earliest hard rock obsessions was "Hush," a hit for DP when they were still on the Tetragrammaton Records label before they upgraded to Warner Bros, and of course, "Smoke On The Water," one of the last hard rock singles to score big on AM Top 40 radio, including 77-WABC in New York. Deep Purple has been a force of nature in rock

Rhythm Tracking With Jimi LaLumia

or hip hop have no place in the Hall; my thoughts on this have evolved over time. As Ice Cube so wisely stated: Rock & roll is a spirit, and I agree with that; it is a spirit of rebellion, of change, and of youth, and hip hop certainly touches all those bases. N.W.A. was viewed with the same sense of alarm that Elvis Presley, "Rock Around The Clock," and "Blackboard Jungle" were viewed when they were new and threatening the status quo – and like Elvis, hip hop has become the norm and a mainstay, despite Gene Simmons' non-televised speech seemingly wishing that hip hop will go away. That's notgoing to happen, Gene, and the kids aren't interested in you, anyway so get over it and keep counting your millions. The Steve Miller Band was inducted, and this was the most talked-about part of the evening: Miller found out the hard way that The Hall Of Fame is first and foremost a financial enterprise, and Steve that it's a cool $10,000 a head to Miller pay for the table where the winners sit and wait to be called to the stage. Miller got into a ruckus with the Hall over the price tag, and wound up arriving with only his wife, minus the band members who have played with him for many years; the guys either wouldn't or couldn't pay the price, and Miller reportedly seemed to think that the record company, Capitol Records, should foot the bill. This led to an off-stage meltdown between Miller and anyone in his way, including Hall reps, people from his record company who he saw sitting way up front, and the two guys from The Black Keys, who welcomed him to the stage. His acceptance speech, which was televised, reflected none of this drama, but apparently there was plenty off stage Chicago

which, in a social media era, would not remain a secret for very long; his comments made headlines everywhere. That $10,000 price tag may be the reason why The Sex Pistols didn't show up the year they were inducted, and might be a reason why The Marvelettes and The New York Dolls, to name two, have not made it into the Hall, although

& roll for decades, and this enshrinement was long overdue. Chicago finally made the cut, and the band members delivered some entertaining spins on their lives and how long it took for them to gain entry to the Hall: The early version of the band, when they were CTA (Chicago Transit Authority), had a lot more of a rock feel, but years later their parade of hit singles fit in comfortably alongside the latest chart-toppers from Helen Reddy and John Denver. While that may be pop, it's nowhere near rock. It was this in that era that Top 40 radio (in New York, anyway) did everything it could to bring in the easy listening flood from the likes of Barry Manilow and Earth Shoe ballads from Linda Ronstadt. Thanks, but no thanks. Cheap Trick was inducted; they do, indeed, rock, and were more accepted by Top 40 than the glitter, glam, and punk that was rejected in America. Cheap Trick got signed after a great showcase gig at Max's Kansas City, which they neglected to mention, but they at least brought the night to a properly rocking finale. I'm still holding out hope for The New York Dolls, T.Rex, Mott The Hoople, and yes, The Marvelettes to gain entry into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. I won't hold my breath.

Tenor saxophonist and 2013 Thelonious Monk Awardwinner Melissa Aldana has released a new album, Back Home, on the Wommusic label. She'll follow up the release with a tour that will take her to several major U.S. cities in the coming weeks and months. Once again, Pablo Menares backs the saxophonist on bass, with Jochen Rueckert on drums.
