This year has only just begun, and there are already some amazing things looking to happen. From the awesome tours, the up and coming new artists, and all of the crazy shit that happens in between.

TechnoBeat

With Richard Joseph Branciforte

Personally, I like to experience all the EDM I can live because, well, why not? There are a couple of tours that everyone needs to check out if they want to feel completed. DJ Carnage has taken quite the rise to fame in the last few years. Starting on the smaller, more bass heavy stages, he has made his way to main stage at festivals across the world and is bringing this talents to you on his “Papi Gordo Tour.” One of the things that make this tour special is the crew he is touring with. Valentino Khan and Kayzo bring the full effect of show together with the range of genres they span. Between the three artists, I was able to hear everything from dubstep, trap, hardstyle, all types of house, and some things I really couldn’t even put into a genre. And with all the dope music, Carnage managed to take it to the next level with his introduction. I’ve been to a lot of shows before and I have yet to see as cinematic and intriguing intro. I don’t want to ruin the details for you, but your boy Carnage basically gets tortured a little, killed, then comes back to life in a well produced video playing before the big man himself comes out. How can you not get excited when you’re seeing that live? Bear Grillz

Now, head-banging dubstep might not appeal to most of you, but it surely appeals to me. There are few live shows I would rather go to than one where I can get a solid crew of people and just go absolutely wild for 4 hours and not give a damn. This description can be summed up by the “The Paradox Tour.” When you put together Figure, Bear Grillz, and Excision into one epic night, you know things are gonna get wild. With some of the craziest lighting and video production design in the business, their 150,000 watts of

power will most likely blow you away. Excision’s hard hitting bass has always been his signature and he’s stuck with this style for a while and we can’t get enough. But you also can’t forget about the animal himself, Bear Grillz. I was lucky enough to see Bear Grillz three times in 2015, and get to bring in 2016 with one of his shows as well. It seems like Bear Grillz has just catapulted to the top of the dubstep charts in only the last year. He’s got that energetic, upbeat style that he uses to remix bangers and release

DJ Carnage

his own original filth. This is a tour you definitely don’t want to miss and I wish I could go see it every week for the entire year. Does everyone remember when Marshmello came out of nowhere? People had no idea who this guy was, how he got so popular, why were major artists supporting this random guy’s music, and what did it all mean? Well, the next “Marshmello” has come out of nowhere (although not quite as mysterious). In the span of 24 hours, someone named Slushii released three amazing remixes and posted them on Soundcloud. He was immediately supported by Marshmello and the tracks have an extremely high production quality. After doing some snooping around, it seems that Slushii has been around for a little while, previously under the name DJ Swoon. He is no newcomer to the world of EDM, and it shows. He brings a style of melodic bass (similar to Marshmello) with hard dubstep and trap drops. Additionally, he seems to start his songs off with a nice, breezy piano riff before bringing in the vocals or the main progression. I hope to see a lot more of Slushii; and I think with the leadership of Moe Shalizi at Redlight Management, we will. Looking forward to some solid Slushii collabs in the future. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments at richiegtechno@gmail.com. Keep raging, my friends.

The Good (inset) & Bad Of Gerard Butler

Gods Of Egypt Starring Gerard Butler, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Rufus Sewell, Brenton Twaites, Geoffrey Rush Directed by Alex Proyas Lionsgate In the commercial film world, we have settled into that usual time of slim pickings between the holidays and the spring/summer film seasons. Who better to call upon hunky Gerard Butler, whose pecs launched 300 into the stuff of action film legend – and is the headliner in both of these new films as well. Before we even saw it, we laughed: The televised trailer for Gods Of Egypt, despite the movie’s reportedly insane budget, might be the most ridiculous-looking ad since the famed stinker Snakes On A Plane – the costumes are preposterous, and there’s more CGI than inside Peter Foldes’ yellowing Mac hard drive. Now that the film is out, we can report that it’s

like the sort of thing that will make teens beg their parents for $20 for a matinee showing, despite all the non-stop special effects. Butler? His casting here as Set seems meaningless, as he’s just a prop for all the SMASH! BOOM! POW! Thankfully, the handsome Scottish star tries a lot harder in London Has Fallen, as he’s given a lot more to work with: In this sequel to Olympus Has Fallen, the world’s leaders have congregated in London for the funeral of the British Prime Minister, but the solemn event turns into a scene where someone is not only trying to kill every one of those leaders, but also to blow up every landmark in London at the same time. Here comes the U.S. to the rescue as the Secret Service’s Mike Banning (Butler, who really ought to be considered to become the next James Bond) and the President (Eckhart) get down to business and foil a plot that comes close to rocking the entire planet ot its core. The subject matter seems grim, but director Babak Najafi seems about as serious as a whoopie cushion, allowing the acts of daring-do to run together into a satisfying, entertaining conclusion that you’ll forget you even saw about a half-hour after leaving the theater. Such is March at the movies.

not nearly as over-thetop corny as its ubiquitous TV ads might suggest – but it's surely no classic, and nothing about it rings sincere; the story of Set, “the god of darkness,” turning Egypt into his own personal realm of chaos doesn’t sound

Most spring training stories are fluff, not worth reading – but an exception was New York Post columnist Kevin Kernan’s piece on the New York Mets’ Matt Harvey on the day that pitchers and catchers reported to training

Professional athletes are wealthy and have the right to purchase anything they want, but most shy away from expensive sports cars as they attract the attention of both law enforcement authorities and criminals. Of more pressing concern to Mets fans: Harvey is always blasé when it comes to the topic of signing a long-term contract; he’s scheduled to be a free agent in three years. Greg done so. If Mets fans were concerned about Bird retaining Yoenis Cespedes, they’ll likely be apoplectic in 2018 if Harvey walks. Kernan believes it might not be unfathomable for GM Sandy Alderson to consider trading Harvey sooner rather than later so that the team can get better assets in return. No one is suggesting that the Mets deal Harvey in a fit of pique – similar to nearly 40 years ago when they shipped Tom Seaver to the Reds for a paltry haul in return – but Harvey shouldn’t be considered to be an “untouchable.” Mets executives couldn’t have been happy that Harvey decided to appear on Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live!” last month, where he admitted to host Andy Cohen that he has been intimate on the baseball diamond and has engaged in a Matt menage-a-trois, but surprisingly Harvey has yet to join the mile-high club. oss Stone, the UK export who has become one of the most famous soul and R&B singers of her generation, makes her debut on Friday, March 18 at 8 pm at The Space At Westbury. Tickets and information: thespaceatwestbury.com and ticketmaster.com. By her own admission, Stone has been obsessed with soul music since she was a little girl. By the time she was in her early teens, she had begun to intuitively hone her gravelly but lustrous vocals by singing along to Aretha’s Franklin’s Greatest Hits. She began pursuing a singing career at 13, securing a record deal at 15, and recording her

writer but not losing the soulful edge that’s made her a superstar. In her short life and already long career, Stone has performed onstage with the likes of James Brown, Gladys Knight, Solomon Burke, Blondie, Smokey Robinson, and Melissa Etheridge, among others. She’s contributed to albums by Jeff Beck and Ringo Starr, played the Super Bowl pre-game show, performed on the Grammy Awards, and has won a Grammy herself. She’s approached it all with a sense of independence and joie de vivre. Stone has always been a bit of a rebel; whether she’s dancing barefoot onstage, dyeing her hair various colors, or speaking out on issues she’s passionate about, part of what her fans love about her is that she’s a free-spirit. As Stone herself put it: “My mission is to explore and understand the universal language of music in every country on the planet. The tour will be tiring and tough and I know at times very emotional, but it will be a truly amazing journey.”

Meat Loaf: Bat Out Of Hell Has Sold More Than 40 Million Copies

There is a lot more to Meat Loaf than just that album: Three multiplatinum albums followed the sophomore album, including 1993’s Bat Out Of Hell II: Back Into Hell (which sold five million in the U.S., 15 million worldwide), producing the hit, Grammy-winning single, “I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That),” a #1 single in 28 countries, earning the honor for Best Rock Vocal Performance Solo. Welcome To The Neighborhood went double-platinum in 1995, while 2003’s Couldn’t Have Said It Better earned platinum in 2003 and 2006’s Bat Out Of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose, the third in the best-selling trilogy, nabbed platinum in 2006. He’s still an actor as well: To date, Meat has also appeared in more than 60 films and television shows, including The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Crazy In Alabama, Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny, Focus, Formula 1 (with Sam Jackson), Fight Club, M.D., “Masters Of Horror,” Hallmark’s “Citizen Jane,” “Monk,” and “Glee.”

"When driven hard, the Winterland speaker does not compress with magnet dynamics. Instead, it generates cone overdrive," Shapiro said. LONG ISLAND SOUNDS

Dave Brock and his unique Doors tribute, Wild Child set the night on fire with their 19-song set at this Huntington hotspot. Truth was found in advertising as the neon marquee lit the boulevard bearing the slogan: “A Jim Morrison Celebration.” The unmistakable opening riff to “Roadhouse Blues” signaled the start

Dave Brock’s Wild Child The Paramount Huntington

of the party as the band recreated the ambiance and nuance of the original Doors. Next up where such nowstandards as “Break On Through,” “Soul Kitchen,” “Touch Me,” and “Winter Time.” With each passing number, it was easy to wonder what gem would next be polished and presented as a delicacy for the audience to savor: “Alabama Song

(Whiskey Bar)” ripped into a haunting “Back Door Man.” The jaunty celebration of bar-hopping based on Berthold Brecht's poetry perfectly melded into the raucous debauchery of “what the little girls understand.” Moving into “Hello I Love You,” sliding with ease into the groove that makes the tune fun and unmistakable, they continued with “Strange Days,” “When The Music's Over,” “Love Me Two Times,” and “Crystal Ship.” Brock hesitated to start the vocal to “Peace Frog” to let the opening riff embed itself like a fish hook that set the crowd to dancing as if it was caught on a line. The set finished off with “Riders On The Storm,” “Love Her Madly,” “Not To Touch The Earth,” and the eternal “Light My Fire.” Brock left the stage while the guitar solo rang out, and he had clearly left a stamp on the evening by the time he had returned for the encore – and scored with a fine “L.A. Woman” and a splendid rendering of “The End.” The master showman thanked the crowd, and announced that Wild Child would likely be back touring in the spring. The excitement, showmanship, and musicianship displayed on this evening is likely already selling tickets for the promised shows to come.

Area Music Reviews You Can Use At this December performance, Mad Co. struck powerfully wielded the hits created by Bad Company. The opener, “Rock Steady,” set the tone, most appropriate to summarize the efforts of the band. “Movin' On” followed; lead singer “Texas” Bob Weir announced that this was the band's equivalent of playing Madison Square Garden – and it held nothing back. Highlights included “Good Lovin' Gone Bad,” Hammer Of The “Shooting Star,” and Gods / “Rock And Roll Fantasy.” Mad Co. Billy Dee set a fine foundation on bass, and Jeff Hickman rounded out a tight rhythm section on the drums. Joe Siciliano offered fine leads on guitar, while Jay Walker rocked the keyboards. The show reached a climax with Bad Company's namesake tune, much to the delight of many fans who danced and sang along. Mad Co. took the audience into halftime with “All Right Now,” having left it all out on the field. Hammer Of The Gods ensured that more good times were to follow, opening with “Achilles Last Stand,” proving this tribute act’s longevity and popularity have been no accident. The group has added a video

backdrop to its presentation, adding to the meticulous look the group already has recreated with its theatricality. Next: a hopping little helping of “Rock And Roll,’ then the catalog took over: “Trampled Underfoot,” “Stairway To Heaven,” “Houses Of The Holy,” and “Black Dog.” Modern technology added a Facebook request for “Physical Graffiti,” messaged in during

The Space At Westbury

the performance. “Kashmir” provided a rousing stomp before the encore; after toweling off, the band offered “Whole Lotta Love” and “What Is And What Should Never Be.” Mad Co. took on the unenviable task of opening for a hot, established band, which HOTG has been for years. While Hammer Of The Gods produced its usual fine show, Mad Co. more than held its own. These two bands have shared the same bill on several occasions, and it has proved to be a fine “two-fer” for classic rock fans.

vocal groups of all time, during the 1970s The Stylistics had 12 consecutive R&B Top 10 hits, including "Stop, Look, Listen," "You Are Everything," "Betcha By Golly, Wow," "People Make The World Go Round," "I'm Stone in Love with You," "Break Up To Make Up," "You Make Me Feel Brand New," and more. The Dramatics: These dashing Detroit singers scored two massive hits with "In the Rain" and the mega-funky "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get." They also scored with “Hey You! Get Off My Mountain,” “Fell For You,” and “You're Fooling You.” Bloodstone: This unique group charted a whopping 13 hits from the late ’70s through

the early ’80s; they're best remembered for the mega-smash “Natural High,” “Outside Woman,” “My Little Lady,” and “We Go A Long Way Back. Harold Melvin's Blue Notes: The group that made legends of both Melvin and Teddy Pendergrass has one of the biggest array of hits ever by a vocal group, including such classics as "If You Don't Know Me By Now," "I Miss You," "The Love I Lost," "Wake Up Everybody," "Bad Luck," "Hope That We Can Be Together Soon," and many more. The Main Ingredient: In the 1970s, RCA Records only had a handful of hit pop artists save The Guess Who and Elvis Presley – but Cuba Gooding Sr. and The Main Ingredient stormed out of the gates with “Everybody Plays The Fool,” “Just Don't Want To Be Lonely,” “Happiness Is Just Around The Bend,” and more.

Who: Kirsten Maxwell, a young Huntington-based folk singer/songwriter, is off to a fast start in her career: The young star was named a winner of The 2016 South Florida Folk Festival Singer-Songwriter Competition after showcasing her talents along with 12 other finalists during the annual festival in Fort Lauderdale on January 16. As one of three winners, Maxwell received a cash prize, and has been invited to perform on the Festival’s main stage next January. This is just the latest in a series of accolades that the versatile 23 year-old vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter has received in recent months. During 2015, Maxwell was the first-place winner in a contest sponsored by The Rhode Island Songwriters Association (RISA), and opened a concert for Michael Johnson (“Bluer Than Blue”). She also earned a slot in The Suzi Wollenberg Folk DJ Showcase at the 2015 Northeast Regional Folk Alliance (NERFA) Conference in Kerhonkson. In November, Maxwell performed at Cinema Arts Centre’s Sky Room in Huntington. More recently, Maxwell performed at The Huntington Public Library, and shared a bill with Cathy Kreger at The Our Times Coffeehouse at the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island in Garden City. Maxwell’s voice has drawn comparisons to the likes of Joan Baez, Judy Collins, and Joni Mitchell, and is evocative of the 1960s folk scene. “I never thought I’d ever hear a voice as angelic and mesmerizing as I did when I first started listening to Joan Baez some 50 years ago, but then I heard the voice, the songs, and melodies of Kirsten Maxwell,” said Jon Stein, host of “Hootenanny Café” on WTBQ-FM in Orange County. Last year, Maxwell independently released her debut album, Crimson, and is currently promoting it to folk and other radio programmers across the country and beyond. The album was produced by Maxwell and Fred Guarino of Tiki Recording Studios in Glen Cove. Much is upcoming for Maxwell: John Platt, host of “Sunday Supper” on WFUV 90.7 FM in the Bronx, will feature Maxwell on his monthly “On Your Radar” showcase at Rockwood Music Hall on Manhattan’s Lower East Side tonight (March 8.) Other upcoming area appearances include The Song Box house concert series in Seaford on Saturday, April 30 (co-billed with Annie Mark, another Huntington area performer), and The Eclectic Café in Bay Shore on Saturday, May 14 on a bill with Rachael Kilgour and Matt Nakoa. “It is exciting to return to your home town after college and connect with it in a new way,” said Maxwell. “My days at Huntington High School were some of the best, but I did not identify with the community until I found the folk music scene on Long Island. The musical community here is powerful, and fellow musicians and music lovers are the reason I have made it this far doing what I love.” To Learn More About The Artist: Log on to kirstenmaxwell.com.

HBO’s Music History: Director Martin Scorsese has long been a fan of pop music, and has incorporated that admiration into his body of work, starting with the brilliant "Mean Streets." In addition to his canon of TV and film projects, rock music documentaries have sprung from his

New York Dolls. CBGB as we knew it might not have ever happened if Max's hadn't been there first. All of those nuggets of truth seemed to be lost to the sands of time, as MTV News in the ’80s acted as if everything in the punk universe had originated at CBGB. Now, finally, HBO allows the world to see the dawn of everything: The hardly mentioned Mercer Arts Center; a version of The New York Dolls turning a record exec's head around; and Max's Kansas City being recognized as the birthplace of the scene. "Vinyl" is not a documentary;

work bench as well – so it was not a surprise to learn of the new HBO series "Vinyl," a collaboaration from Scorsee and Mick Jagger, that features the early 1970s downtown New York City scene I was once part of. Word spread fast that The New York Dolls and Max's Kansas City would be two of the early elements featured in the series. This was joyous news; the NYC scene has been dismissed and trivialized for decades. The biggest New York victims: Max's and The Dolls. The Rock & Roll Hall Dolls Of Fame has inducted The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, and other stars of the era, but The New York Dolls remain on the outside looking in despite the fact that both The Ramones and The Pistols gave credit to The Dolls for inspiring them to become bands in the first place. Clearly, punk as we know it might never have existed if not for The Dolls. I remember CBGB honcho Hilly Krystal getting a well-deserved inclusion in the Hall; I never had issues or problems with Hilly or HBO’s “Vinyl”

CBGB – but Max's still has yet to be honoroed. The fact is that CBGB started exclusively booking the NYC “scene bands” during the period that Max's temporarily closed in 1973, changing hands from first owner Mickey Ruskin to Tommy and Laura Dean. Max's served as the prototype for CBGB, having booked The Velvet Underground, Alice Cooper, The Stooges, Wayne County, and The

it is an entertainment product that details the journey of a record guy, played by Bobby Cannavale, as he rediscovers his love for rock & roll. Some details in “Vinyl” aren’t historically correct. Iconic figures are used to move the storyline along; Jagger's son, James, plays the lead man for The Nasty Bits, who are punk a few years before the punk sound came to pass. As a result, some downtown cellar dwellers are moaning over details. Of course, The Mercer didn't collapse the night The Dolls played there; that info belongs in a documentary, not in an entertainment product. However, the good news is that “Vinyl” will induce a new breed of fans to “Google” The Dolls, The Mercer, Max's, and everything else to discover a world they’ve never known. I was thrilled to get a call from “Vinyl's” casting people who wanted Jayne County to make an appearance; they got to us too late, but hopefully they're keeping us in mind for Season Two. I’m looking forward to every episode of “Vinyl,” and I’m thankful that Scorsese and Jagger have picked this time frame and this particular scene to focus on.

Led by the harmonica of Jackson Kincheloe and the deep blues wail from his sister, Arleigh Kincheloe (“Sister Sparrow”), the new album is a snapshot of what Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds do best: raucous and spontaneous soul, a direct response to the energy of their audience. “Our music is loud, fun, and it’s supposed to make you feel good,” Arleigh declares. “That’s the goal.” Recorded among family, friends, and their “Party Fowl” fans at a soldout show at The Warehouse in Fairfield, Connecticut, Fowl Play is a celebration of what a landmark year 2015 was for the band: 25 major festival dates, 125 shows, and their national television debut on NBC's “The Today Show.” Locally, they wowed the Westbury audience with their appearance at the then-new The Space in 2014. Megan Bonell

Singer/songwriter Megan Bonnell will release her new album, Magnolia, on MapleMusic Recordings on April 15. Bonnell has teamed up once again with producers Chris Stringer (The Wooden Sky, Timber Timbre) and Joshua Van Tassel (David Myles, Gypsophilia) to create her collection of 11 new songs, showcasing a very specific time in her life. The first single, "Can't Have You," recently debuted at the PureVolume website. "Magnolia started to take shape back in 2013,” said Bonnell. “I was touring my first album, Hunt And Chase, and as I did, new songs started to arrive, and thank goodness for that. It was in the making of this record that I was able to make a certain kind of sense of the world around me … Love came and went, and then came again, and my family found itself blessed by the birth of my beautiful sister's first little girl. Things were changing. I wanted to move forward, but I didn't want time to diminish history's meaning." As radio has already taken notice, U.S. tour dates in support of the soon-to-come new effort will be announced soon.
