Dee Snider The LI Legend Sets Out On His Own
In March, Dee Snider and his Twisted Sister bandmates mourned the loss of their drummer, A.J. Pero, and announced that the 2016 touring season (the 40th anniversary of the band’s formation) will be the end of the road for Twisted Sister. While perhaps he is best known as the lead singer of the 80s sensation, Snider is also forging on in different ways. Snider is continuing to make music on his own, releasing “To Hell And Back” exclusively via his website, deesnider.com, as a free download. He co-wrote the song with Silvertide founder/guitarist Nick Perri. This track will be included in a new album that Snider is currently working on with writer/producer Damon Ranger. The new project will also feature material from Snider's past, including his hits with Twisted Sister. At present, Snider and his band – Nick Perri (lead guitar), Dan McCafferty (rhythm/lead guitar), Nicolai Nifoussi (bass), Joe Franco (drums) – is on a solo tour which is taking him to Europe and South America for festival shows, including Rock
In Rio in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and The Rock Of Ages Festival in Baliingen, Germany. He also has performed a number of headlining shows in the U.S., shows which started with The Legendary Buffalo Chip Campground at The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, South Dakota on August 3. For the uninitiated: Snider has also starred in several reality TV shows, including appearances in three seasons of “Celebrity Apprentice,” “Gone Country With John Rich,” MTV’s “Rock The Cradle” with his son Jesse Blaze, “Growing Up Twisted” (an A&E series featuring the entire Snider family and their Long Island lifestyle), ABC’s “Celebrity Wife Swap,” and “Celebrity Holiday Homes.” He has also been a frequent host on MTV Networks and has enjoyed more than 20 years on the air in radio – his long-running, nationally syndicated radio show House Of Hair can be heard on more than 200 stations in North America and at Houseofhaironline.com. Snider also recently launched a podcast, “Snider Comments,” on the PodcastOne Network. His career as a voiceover artist has resulted in Snider being heard in many radio and TV commercials, animated shows, documentaries, as well as a year-long stint as the voice on MSNBC. On top of all that, Snider also is an accomplished actor, with his stint in “Rock Of Ages” on Broadway one of his most memorable performances. While there is a lot of baseball yet to be played, if the Mets do go on to make it into the post-season it will be easy to cite July 30 as the turning point of

015 Bowling Ball Previews: You asked for it: In past years, previews of new bowling ball releases have been among our most popular regular features. For this year, we’ve gone directly to the sources – the major bowling ball companies – to get the latest scoops on the new balls that can help improve your game during the 2015/2016 season. Recently, we contacted Chris Schlemer, the always-busy brand manager at Roto-Grip, to give us his take on his company’s stellar new line of products. Here’s a look at four of Roto-Grip’s newest addtions, with comments from Schlemer himself (the balls range from the HP4 line (most hook potential) to HP1 (least hook potential, in order): MENACE: “The Menace features the Cage Core we first introduced in the Sinister last summer,” reported Schlemer. “This dynamic core makes a move, and we wanted to show that off in this release. So we wrapped this beauty with the 74H Solid Reactive coverstock … and when I said ‘solid,’ it is just that. No additives at all, just pure solid reactive. We finished it to 3000 to get it cleaner through the fronts. The idea here was to compliment both the Roto Grip line as well as the Storm line; this ball is cleaner than the Hyper Cell and Crux, but not as clean as the pearl versions and is stronger overall than the Sinister – something we have not had from either brand in a long time. The early reviews of this ball: Consumers and shops feel this ball is reminiscent of the old Virtual Gravity we had on the Storm side. HAYWIRE: “This ball is the one that everyone is drooling over,” said Schlemer. “I did a little mixing in the kitchen to create this gem. The simplest description is

The end result: closer Jeurys Familia gave up a three-run homer to slugger Justin Upton, and the Mets suffered their most painful loss of the season. The infamous “non-trade” in which the Mets were to shop infielder Wilmer Flores and injured pitcher Zack Wheeler to the Milwaukee Brewers for center fielder Carlos Gomez fell apart the night before. Flores was playing shortstop that night with tears in eyes after learning that the media was reporting that he would be an ex-Met. It now appears that the Mets were fortunate that the deal fell through. Be that as it may, the Mets’ season next seemed like it was on the brink of disaster on the morning of Friday, July 31, which, of course, happened to be the trade deadline. According to my sources, Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon was so disgusted with the events of the previous 24 hours that he gave general manager Sandy Alderson the green light to bring in a slugger, no matter what the short-term cost. Alderson acquired Yoenis Cespedes from the Detroit Tigers for a pair of minor leaguer pitchers. The Mets wound up sweeping a key series from the Washington Nationals, and next did the same to the Marlins in Miami. It seems like it was a million years ago, but it was only December when the Mets’ big acquisition was outfielder Michael Cuddyer, who the team signed to a two-year, $21 million contract. There was some question as to why the

DEVOUR: “We knew we needed a solid, and we knew it needed to be a different motion down lane,” reported Schlemer. “So we took the proven Neutron Core from the Wrecker and changed the slug on bottom to lower the differential. However, in doing this we made the differential higher than that of the Outcry and Uproar. The
new Late Roll 56 core has a differential of .034, which like I said fits right smack dab in the middle of the balls currently in the HP2 Line. This, too, is finished to 3000, so that it clears the fronts and has energy down lane. Best described from staffers as the ‘missing piece,’ this ball

has created some buzz as well. the Mets clubhouse, and has always been gracious to the media no matter how big or small their outlets are. Younger players need to learn how to handle themselves, and Cuddyer has been a great role model and mentor. As the Mets head into their first pennant race in years, having Cuddyer on their roster could pay significant dividends down the homestretch. Derek Jeter has been on the cover of nearly every sports periodical imaginable, but he may be most thrilled about gracing the cover of the August 7 issue of The Hollywood Reporter. The entertainment trade magazine profiles his publishing deal with Simon & Schuster as well as his most public post-baseball venture, The Players Tribune website. TPT’s mission is to have athletes (through the Tribune’s editorial staff of ghost writers) converse
with the public directly through first-person articles, thus bypassing the traditional media. The Players Tribune has gotten big names to write articles, but I have always been more intrigued about the players who have been on the bubble and their thoughts. Somehow, I don’t think that “The Captain” will seek out articles by players who aren’t fellow superstars or household name. The New York Jets learned that their top defensive end, Sheldon Richardson, would be suspended for four games for use of performance enhancing drugs. Richardson took out his frustrations behind the wheel, as he was arrested for allegedly driving over 140 MPH with a child in the back seat; I think that it’s safe to say that Richardson will have a few games tacked onto his suspension. Before “Gang Green” even played its first preseason game, the team lost cornerback Dee Milliner for six-to-eight weeks with a wrist injury, and Antonio Allen for the season with an Achilles tendon rupture. I recently returned from a trip to coastal North Carolina, and I heartily recommend visiting there if you want to see some of the most beautiful beaches in our country. The Blockade Runner Resort in Wrightsville Beach is a family-run hotel that offers both surfing and sailing lessons. The Sea Trail Resort in Sunset Beach is located an hour south of Wrightsville Beach, and a half-hour north of Myrtle Beach. The Sea Trail has three championship golf courses, and excellent instructors such as PGA pro Raymond Reyes. There is a free shuttle to the beach, where you can either ride your bike or jog on its tightly packed sand that is a lot easier on your legs

At the time that slow-rolling hype for the next James Bond film, Spectre, started to filter into the media months before its release, it just may be that the great spy film of 2015 might have already been released. This new epic in the Mission: Impossible series, now comprised of five movies (with at least a sixth reportedly to come), is the hardest-hitting, most fully realized film in a franchise that, sadly, few younger viewers even realize is based on the classic 1960s TV series starring Peter Graves, Martin Landau, Barbara Bain, Peter Lupus, Lesley Ann Warren, Greg Morris, and a host of other perfectly cast stars. There are many who claim that Tom Cruise is the main reason for the success of the Mission: Impossible series; that might have true at the time of the release of the first film in 1996. However, the steady build of these movies, now one of the 25 biggest box office film franchises of all time, has a lot more to do with the respect the series has had for the spy genre itself. The difference is that the Mission: Impossible films treat its audience with respect, with realistic themes, great plot twists, and fine acting to go along with the usual over-the-top Hollywood action and beautiful people. Which brings us to Rebecca Ferguson, a Swedish stunner who plays double agent Ilsa Faust with the most intensity of any

enjoyed huge success, both with the 1971 release of the studio album, Edgar Winter's White Trash, and with 1972's follow-up live gold album, Roadwork. In late 1972, Edgar brought together Dan Hartman, Ronnie Montrose, and Chuck Ruff to form The Edgar Winter Group, the band that created such hits as the #1 “Frankenstein” and “Free Ride.” Released in 1973, They Only Come Out at Night peaked at the number three position on the Billboard Hot 200 and stayed on the charts for an impressive 80 weeks. It was certified gold in April 1973, as well as double platinum in November 1986. Winter invented the keyboard body strap early in his career, an innovation that allows him the freedom to move around on stage during his multi-instrument high-energy performances. He

Much like the TV show, it's the behind-the-scenes team that's vital to every mission, and Jeremy Renner (the brains) and Ving Rhames (the techie) do a superb job in strategy, implementation, and in this case, delivering riveting entertainment. Daniel Craig had best be in top form this time around, since this MI film will still be in film fans' memories by the time the James Bond thriller hits screens. Here's hoping that 007 scores again, as the spy genre continues to give grown-ups something to look at besides an endless array of comic book mutants and ham-fisted, unfunny Hollywood comedies. was also the first artist to feature a synthesizer as the main instrument in a song. “Frankenstein” revolutionized rock, and opened up a whole new world of possibilities with experimentation and sound. There couldn’t be a history written about British rock without including Eric Burdon, whose gravelly voice and impassioned performances have made him true rock royalty. He was part of two major bands, first as the vocalist of The Animals, and later for fronting the funk band War. The Animals ruled the pop and singles charts for much of the 1960s, scoring such classics as "The House of the Rising Sun," "Sky Pilot," "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place," and "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood." In 1970, Burdon joined the California-based funk band War, and the hits started rolling in once again with "Spill The Wine, "Tobacco Road," "Paint It, Black," and "They Can't Take Away Our Music."

Cummings Is Back: Guitarist Albert Cummings recently issued his new album for Blind Pig Records, Someone Like You. The new disc by the popular Massachusetts guitar slinger is now in stores as the veteran performer treks across the country to support the just-finished effort. The album was produced by Grammy-winner David Z at Clear Lake Audio in Los Angeles. Said Z, “Albert Cummings writes, plays and sings the blues like nobody else. What a blast to watch him jell in the studio with some of the best musicians in Los Angeles.” One of those musicians was Blind Pig labelmate and leader of The Basic Cable Band on the “Conan” TV show, Jimmy Vivino, who recalled first seeing
it was the real deal and undiluted and dripping with soul and blues ... real blues." "Albert and I became fast friends and have stayed in touch since,” said Vivino. “That was five years ago. When I found out they were cutting a couple of blocks from my home, I called David Z and said ‘Tell Albert I am there whenever he says!’ And he 'said' and I 'went' and it was great.” This album marks Cummings’ return to Blind Pig, which released three albums by him beginning in 2004. Neon Trees • Irving Plaza • New York City Nowadays, band emerge on a seemingly weekly basis, making fans wary of the new flavor of the month. Conversely, Neon Trees offers a beautiful blend of pop/rock, and proved here that they can rock a club as it were a stadium.
As Neon Trees approached the stage buoyed by a new hit (“Songs I Can’t Listen To” was climbing the charts), lead singer Tyler Glenn and his cohorts came out all smiles and drive. Chris Allen seemed to find the perfect crisp guitar tone on “Your Surrender,” “ 1983,” and the hit “Animal,” from their first commercially successful album, Habbits. “Love In The 21st Century” soon followed, and they next offered a surprise cover of Amy Winehouse’s “Love Is a Losing Game.” When it was over, Glenn suggested that everyone should see the Winehouse documentary currently in theaters. Continuing with “Sleeping With My
Friend” and “First Things First,” Glenn expressed that the new album had expanded the band’s musical horizons, and that he believe it marked the first time he really got to use his singing voice. Brandon Campbell kept his bass thumping perfectly throughout the set, and seemed to feed off Glenn’s electric moves on stage. Drummer Elaine Bradley surprised the crowd when she announced – rising off her drum seat to show her robust belly – that she was due quite soon, as she was nearly eight months pregnant. She never missed a beat, which surely must have buoyed her credentials amongst both hardcore Neon Trees fans and causual observers alike. Before heading towards the last two songs of their set, the band openly expressed they were not fond of encores – yet crashed into the fan favorite “Everybody Talks.” As fans actually started to exit the venue, the band surprised them by performing their last song of the evening: a cover of Dexy’s Midnight Runners’ “Come On Eileen.” Giving the crowd a catchy tune for the ride home, Neon Trees took their bows and walked away like a true rock band, not pop wannabes. – Christopher Jon Smaragdas
Santana • Forest Hills Stadium With a catalog that spans more than four decades, it would be impossible for Santana to perform the vast majority of it during a two-hour concert. Thus, while many at this refurbished tennis haven may have wanted to hear “Evil Ways,” “No One To Depend On,” and “Everybody’s Everything,” they shouldn’t have bitterly disappointed when they weren’t performed. The only two chestnuts from the 1970s – “Oye Como Va” and “Black Magic Woman” – were played as part of the encore. What was bothersome, however, was that Carlos Santana and his band would play one long jam after another without identifying what they were performing by name. Santana has to understand that this isn’t a Beach Boys where concertgoers know the set lists by heart; “Maria, Maria” and “Corazon” are not “Barbara Ann” and “California Girls.” Santana has always been terrific at covering songs such “She’s Not There” and “Stormy.” Unfortunately, neither of them were performed; instead, the band broke into a lengthy rendition of The Champs’ 1958 instrumental hit, “Tequila.” The band enhanced the tune by adding Spanish lyrics.
Few Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees are more laid back than Carlos Santana. Other than thanking the crowd for attending, he said little and basically chewed gum while playing guitar in a stationary position for the duration. He also showed a wry sense of humor by finishing songs in an unexpected manner, such as dishing off a few riffs of Jerome Kern’s “The Way You Look Tonight” and Xavier Cugat’s “Brazil.” The strangest moment of the show was when Santana’s two vocalists, Andy Vargas and Tony Lindsay, had the crowd singing along and waving their arms to the “na-na-na” chorus from the 1972 America hit, “A Horse With No Name.” Carlos Santana brought his son, Salvador, on stage to perform a number of his self-penned tunes. Salvador is a talented keyboardist that also possesses a fine voice; the problem is that he is not much of a lyricist, judging by his first song, “Summer’s Day” (“It’s a summer’s day/Gonna kick it in the bay/I’m off to L.A.” On the whole, Santana gave the audience a smooth (full pun intended) night of entertainment. – Lloyd Carroll

Charged & Soaring: The new book by David Merkatz, Wrongly Charged: A Look At The Legal System, briefly was a best-seller at Amazon.com, particularly its heavily discounted Kindle version. Merkatz and two fellow locksmiths from South Florida were arrested in 2013 and were charged with a host of charges ranging from burglary to money laundering. Merkatz with his partners had legally registered fictitious names of larger competitors that were similar but not exact to competitors. His websites did not look anything like the
competitor's sites, and even had a disclaimer at the bottom that his company was not related to the competitor's sites, and included links to the competitors’ sites. Merkatz was inspired to write his book to help others that have run into this injustice, and has started a fund to donate 10 percent of any profits from this book to help others that find themselves in the same situation. The new book has drawn a great deal of media attention, as Merkatz has been interviewed on more than 35 radio stations, and also has TV appearances upcoming. Stony Brook Film Festival Winners Lauded
On July 25, The Paramount in Huntington opened a new radio studio adjacent the perfomance venue in conjunction with Connoisseur Media Long Island. The event featured a lavish ribbon-cutting ceremony; in addition, WALK 97.5 FM presented a live concert with national recording artist Andy Grammer, who performed his single “Honey I’m Good” as well as other songs from his canon. Dubbed The Studio @ The Paramount, the venue will now be able to present artists both live on-stage and live on-air through this unique space. Located in the storefront on 370 New York Avenue in Huntington, this newly constructed studio will offer musicians a platform to promote their concert tours or upcoming new music releases to more than 1.6 million of Connoisseur Media Long Island’s weekly radio listeners on any of their five radio stations; WALK 97.5, K-98.3 FM, The New 103.1 MAX FM, 94-3 The Shark, and WHLI 1100/1370.

Long Island's Monster Music, located in Levittown, recently became a category winner (Best Marketing & Sales Promotion) at The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Top 100 Dealer Awards in July in Nashville, Tennesse (pictured, from left, are NAMM Chairman Larry Morton, Monster Music's Brian Reardon, NAMM President Joe Lamond). This award was for Monster's promotion during 2014, where Monster Music students were broadcast every Wednesday at noon singing or playing their version of the National Anthem on K98.3 FM, one of Long Island's most popular radio stations. Mark Newman: Riveting New Music From Hot Guitarist

Area guitarist, singer, and songwriter Mark Newman – long famous as a sideman – strikes out on his own with his new EP, Brussels, now rising up the charts. After playing with John Oates, Jim McCarty (The Yardbirds), Sam Moore, Willy DeVille, and Sam The Sham, many of those influences can be heard on the album, which was recorded in the Belgian capital bearing the same name. Needless to say, those guys became prominent, legendary names in the promotion trade, and I became a small part of the early evolution of the Coliseum becoming an integral piece of what then was the new stadium rock concert business as it moved from smaller places like Commack to the massive barn in Hempstead.

performances were recorded at Nassaul Coliseum, including some great David Bowie Station To Stationperiod tracks, but the list certainly is endless. The news of Joel’s final concert made me flash back to the end of the 1960s and the dawn of the 1970s. I was coming out of high school when I first started writing for Good Times Magazine (at the time, it still went by its original name, Action World). I was covering events at the time at places such as The Commack Arena (which later became a large flea market). A raucous and skirmish-filled Black Sabbath show stands out in my mind. It was that show that led to a phone call I received at home. I guess someone called the magazine and got my information (those were different times), and suddenly I was discussing the possibility of writing a cover letter for money – Billy $50! That was a lot more money in 1969 or 1970 than Joel it is now. The person on the phone liked my feature about the trouble in Commack, told me I was a great writer (always a good way to score points), and asked if I could do a proposal letter for presenting/promoting shows at a new venue in Nassau. A concise one or two paragraph description would suit their purposes, and I'd have half a hundred in my pocket! I sat down and wrote it in five minutes. For some reason, the guys met me up the block from my house. They got the letter, which they were quite pleased with, and I had money burning a hole in my pocket. The guys’ names were Larry Vaughn and Tony Ruffino; my letter got them Nassau Coliseum, and got me a 50 –

There were so many shows that I saw for pleasure that I covered for Good Times or other publications, or that I was invited to due to my Sam Goody's management status in the 70s; there are so many that I can't even begin to recall them. As it turns out, I never heard from Vaughn and Ruffino again. God bless them; they had bigger fish to fry, and for the reasons cited above, I hardly ever paid to see hundreds of shows: Sabbath, Zep, Maiden, Bowie, Alice Cooper, all in their prime. The night that T.Rex was ill, paired with Three Dog Night, and a pop versus glitter battle broke out in the seats between the hardcore Marc Bolan fans (like me) and the AM radio crowd who came to sing along with "Joy To The World." I remember handing "Death To Disco” buttons in 1976 or 1977 to Ann and Nancy
Wilson backstage at the Coliseum when Heart was new, and the ruckus caused by the Good Times headline to my interview: We Don't Intend To Be An Opening Act For Very Long. The stories could go on for days. So long, Nassau Coliseum – it was a blast.

This tragic event accelerated the Network’s efforts to open a third center in Sag Harbor – The Hamptons LGBT Center. The Center has become a home and safe space for LGBT youth, adults, and older adults to express themselves in a supportive and nurturing environment. Each year, the Network continues its work through its Safe Schools Initiative to deliver education, prevention, and outreach programs that help to create safer schools. Don Henley:
Don Henley will launch his “Cass County Tour 2015” this fall, following the September 25 release of Cass County, his fifth studio album and first solo effort in 15 years. Singer/songwriter Shawn Colvin will open on all the dates; he'll perform at The Beacon Theatre in New York City on November 2. Cass County was produced by Henley and Stan Lynch, who also co-wrote 11 of the songs on the album. “I was born and raised in Texas,” said Henley. “I'm a Southerner and a Texan. So this is a natural progression for me. It's who I am and where I come from.” Recorded primarily in Nashville, Tennessee, and Dallas, Texas, the album includes guest appearances from Merle Haggard, Miranda Lambert, Mick Don Jagger, Henley Martina McBride, Jamey Johnson, Alison Krauss, Vince Gill, and Dolly Parton.
