Ant-Man

Starring Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Patrick Wilson, Corey Stoll, Bobby Cannavale, Wood Harris, T.I. Directed by Peyton Reed Disney/Marvel

As pop culture expert Jimi LaLumia astutely pointed out in his “Rhythm Tracking” column in our last issue, the first two film adaptations of Marvel's Avengers blatantly left out a pair of members that were vital in the original comic books: Ant-Man and Wasp Woman. How many of veteran geeks and nerds realize that the original Ant-Man could also be Giant Man, as Hank Pym, the brilliant scientist who could grow or shrink to just about any size he chose, fought against injustice both on his own as as a member of the group that originally also included The Hulk, Iron Man, and Thor; Captain America joined quickly thereafter, as did others … and now there have seemingly been more Avengers than the tallied population of Rhode Island on any given Thursday. (A quick note: There are many movies and TV shows based on Marvel characters available now, but none are more entertaining than the original Stan Lee / Jack KirbyAvengers comic book issues from the early 1960s. Long out of print,

naturally, these comic books have been reissued in both hardbound and paperback books as well as e-books for Kindle readers; log on to Amazon.com and look for the “Marvel Masterworks” series in the book department for your first taste – or perhaps, some quite worthy nostalgia – of some of the finest comic books in history.) Have we proven that we're full-fledged nerds yet? Of course, most film adaptations of books, even comic books, take liberties with things such

THE BOUNTIFUL GOURMET

as origins and attire (we still aren't sure if the Hulk is Bruce Banner or David Banner, but nobody seems to care about such trifles – audiences just want their BAM! POW! CRASH!). Here we have film legend Michael Douglas portraying the aging yet eternally noble Dr. Hank Pym, who enlists a big-time cat burglar, Scott Lang (we must note this: a woefuly miscast Paul Rudd; it’s like using Paul Giamatti as Hercules), to become his partner in helping to “save the world.” How? It seems Pym was the original Ant-Man and inventor, according to this new mash-up of an old character; a former compadre of Pym’s, Cross (Stoll), is about to reveal the magical shrinking suit to the world and sell it off – but this crazy world doesn’t need to know about all this, so Pym and his daughter (the ever-ravishing Lilly) need to stop Cross at all costs. Pym uses Lang as his new human Shrinky Dink, and let the fun and action begin. No doubt about it: “Fun” is the operative word here; director Peyton Reed seems to be a huge fan of the old-time comics, and this film, above all the others, keeps the wry spirit and thrill-a-minute action of those long ago Lee/Kirby issues alive. What a suprise – this is miles better than the second Avengers film, and one of the best comic book adaptations to date. Not bad for a “forgotten” Marvel character. We hope Mr. LaLumia is pleased, because we certainly are.

Pie Craft Pizza Bar: Excellent Food With Creative Flair

On Long Island, there almost is a pizza parlor on every corner. Sometimes within a 6 block radius, there can be 4-5 pizza places, one in each strip shopping center. How do they all survive.?..WE LOVE OUR PIZZA! We've been through it all...regular pizza, white pizza, gourmet pizza...each one a variation on the basic version, so it's of particular interest when we find something that just stands out from the crowd.....Pie Craft in Island Park is just such a place, perhaps at the forefront of a new w ave of pizza extremes...the variations are almost endless, and YOU, the pizza lover, makes the decisions. At Pie Craft, it's kind of a DIY environment. Tucked inside a King Kullen shopping center right before the huge clubs of Barnum

Island, Pie Craft offers great selections. First you choose your dough, which can be the original pizza dough, the rosemary & sun dried tomato & herb dough, and the spicy firecracker, which was our personal favorite, although not really that spicy so the average hot sauce lover will be satisfied. Then, you add your base which can include pesto green, traditional red, or pink pizza with vodka cream sauce with shredded mozzarella, our favorite. What would pizza be without toppings? Pie Craft offers great selections including caramelized onions, shrimp, gorgonzola cheese, bacon, grilled chicken, Parma prosciutto, and more. The whole process only takes 3 minutes to cook, less than some places take for a slice, and the speed is due to the fact that the pies are cooked in Italian made wood burning ovens.

How much is this going to set you back? Would you believe under $10 for the basic pie plus 34 toppings...and I'm talking a good sized pie. Pie Craft also has artisan meatballs...especially good were the buffalo chicken and chicken parm versions.... This is not your ordinary pizza place though...Pie Craft has a tap wine bar, a craft beer bar with 8 rotating selections, plus gluten free hard cider on tap. “If anyone had told us that we would be five games over .500 at the All-Star Game, we would have gladly signed up for that,” New York Mets outfielder Michael Cuddyer told the media following his team’s 5-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks that capped off a three-game sweep at home just before the All-Star Game break. Cuddyer was speaking from the viewpoint of Mets players, but he could just as well have been speaking on behalf of their fans; given the enormous number of players lost to injuries

BOWLING

D

ouble Up This Week: After a 14-year absence, the Professional Bowlers Association’s (PBA) top senior and contemporary stars will converge on Olympia Lanes in Hammond from August 5 through 7 for The Xtra Frame PBA/PBA50 South Shore Doubles Championship. It’s certainly been a long time: Parker The PBA/PBA50 Bohn doubles event, III last held in Reno, Nevada in 2001, historically gave the rising stars of professional bowling an opportunity to bowl as doubles partners with “senior” players, many of whom had already achieved hall of fame status. The revival of the doubles event, hosted by a longtime PBA50 Tour host center, will continue that tradition with many of the PBA’s brightest young stars destined to bowl doubles with some of the PBA’s most highly decorated champions, including Hall of Famers Walter Ray Williams Jr., Norm Duke, Pete Weber, Amleto Monacelli, Parker Bohn III, Tom Baker, Johnny Petraglia, and others. The competition will be covered live from start-tofinish exclusively on PBA’s Xtra Frame online videostreaming service. In the end, both the PBA and PBA50 Tour partners will be rewarded with titles and shares of the projected $20,000 first prize. The last staging of the event, called The National Bowling Stadium Senior/Touring Player Doubles, was won by senior partner Rohn Morton and his Touring

(particularly to team captain and third baseman David Wright who has missed nearly the entire season with back issues, and to catcher Travis d’Arnaud, who seems to have the misfortune of injuring a different part of his body every few games) that led to a painful shortage of offense for a good chunk of the 2015 campaign, it’s hard to quibble with his assessment. In spite of their better-than-expected record, Mets fans have a right to be skeptical in light of recent post-All-Star Game collapses. To use investment lingo, if the Mets were a stock, you would have made a fortune short-selling them after the All-Star Game the last few years. Will history repeat itself? Mets fans can take comfort knowing that both the starting and relief pitching is much better now than any other time in recent memory. The law of averages is on the Mets’ side when it comes to staying healthy from here on out. Finally, they’re done with trips to the west coast for this season, traditionally their Waterloo. Ironically, the Mets finished with a respectable 4-2 record against the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers during their California trip. On the other hand, the Mets still have to play the Colorado Rockies in Denver; the high altitude has never agreed with them, based on game results. Troubling still is that the Mets have shown too much reliance on home runs and not enough on manufacturing runs based on moving men around the bases through steals, hit and run plays, bunts, and productive outs. Mets pitcher Matt Harvey garnered attention two weeks ago when he hit his first major league home run that erased a one-run deficit. That’s all fine and dandy, but what’s more important for Harvey and the

other starters (who, in fairness, aren’t bad hitters for pitchers) is the ability to lay down bunts to advance runners. They are woefuly deficient in that area. Mets manager Terry Collins admitted that he is concerned with Harvey’s propensity to throw a lot of pitches early in games. Harvey appears to have recovered nicely from Tommy John surgery, but Mets management is understandably nervous about overtaxing his arm this year. Mets fans lustily booed Arizona Diamondbacks’ relief pitcher and former Met Oliver Perez every

The tournament also is unique in that players have no idea who their partner will be until qualifying is over. This year, after practice and pro-am squads kick off the tournament on Wednesday, August 5, all PBA50 players will bowl their first eight-game qualifying round at 8 am, and the PBA Tour players will bowl their first round at 3 pm on Friday; the squads will be reversed, with the PBA players bowling another eight games at 8 am, followed by the PBA50 players at 3 pm. time that he was summoned into a game during the recently series between the two teams. Perez’s wildness and inability to win in a Mets uniform drove fans crazy. No problem with fans booing, but I was discouraged by the complete lack of appreciation for Whitestone native Mike Baxter two weeks ago when he returned to Citi Field as a member of the Cubs. The outfielder was the man most responsible for saving Johan Santana’s nohitter three years ago by crashing into a wall to haul in Yadier Molina’s long drive. Relief pitcher

Bobby Parnell noticed the disparity of reactions to former players as well: “Fans always remember the bad stuff and rarely the good when it comes to most former players,” said the bearded right-hander. It’s easy to laugh at the number of sportswriters trying to make hay about the fact that Alex Rodriguez was not named to the American League All-Star team in spite of the fine season he is enjoying. The line of reasoning goes like this: Since “A-Rod” cheated by using steroids in the past then this is the price he has to pay. Sorry to disappoint all the puritanical moralists out there, but the fact is that there was not enough open real estate on the 25-man roster to accommodate Rodriguez. Every team has to have at least one player on a league AllStar roster, and the Yankees had already the more deserving Mark Teixeira, Brett Gardner, and Dellin Betances on the 2015 American League team. Say what you will about “A-Rod,” but you can’t question his dedication to philanthropy. He resolved a disputed bonus clause with the Yankees by agreeing to have the “Bronx Bombers” give millions to charities instead of to himself. Likewise, Rodriguez was able to convince Zack Hampel, the man who caught Rodriguez’ home run 3,000th hit, to return the ball to him in exchange for a $150,000 donation to a charity of Hampel’s choosing. It was a nice touch on the part of the Yankees to play the classic song “It Don’t Come Easy” between innings in honor of Ringo Starr’s 75th birthday earlier in the month. It’s hard to believe that 32 years have passed since George Brett of the Kansas City Royals hit a home run that appeared to beat the Yankees but was initially ruled out because his bat had too

much pine tar on it. That decision was eventually overturned, and the last four outs of the game had to be replayed. Witty New York Daily News columnist Filip Bondy has written the definitive book the incident, The Pine Tar Game (Scribner), now in stores. The book is far more than just a treatise about what could arguably be termed baseball’s first replay that overturned an umpire’s decision. Bondy spends most of the time talking about the once-fierce rivalry between the Royals and Yankees. Bondy also has fun reminiscing about the most intriguing sports owner ever, George Steinbrenner. A Royals marketing executive back in the 1980s named Rush Limbaugh gets some ink here as well. Brooklyn Nets general manager Billy King surprised nearly everyone by buying out the contract of disappointing point guard Deron Williams, who never really played like a franchise player for the team in spite of his NBA maximum contract. The fact that Deron his release Williams triggered a fairly muted reaction is a testament that he never connected with fans here ... and the sadder fact that, in reality, there don’t seem to be a lot of passionate Brooklyn Nets fans.

CLASSIC ROCK U2 Rules Cali: U2 U2 performed its fifth and final sold-out show of the band’s historic residency at The Forum in Inglewood, California on Wednesday, June 3, ending a five-night run of one of the most soughtafter concert events of the year. More than 83,000 concertgoers attended the performances at The Forum, which featured stages at each end of the venue connected by an extended third stage spanning the length of the arena, a massive curtain of LED screens featuring huge video screeens, and surround sound — plus hours of classics from the U2 canon. Oates On The Road: Rock and Roll Hall of Famer John Oates has developed a new travel/roots music television program, “Good Road To Follow.” Adapting the title from a recent solo album release, Oates’ concept is to explore America’s back

roads in search of unique characters, towns, local food, and American roots music. When Oates first teamed up with Daryl Hall to form the pop music duo Hall & Oates, they traveled from gig to gig along America's back roads in a 1968 Pontiac GTO that they bought from John's father. In his new show, Oates hits the road once again – only this time, viewers can come along for the ride. “Two things that have really defined my life over the years are the road and roots music,” said Oates. “So this is my chance to combine those two forces into a show that will allow viewers to come along with me on a unique journey.” On the series, Oates serves as a guide along hidden and often forgotten roads, uncovering parts of the country rarely if ever seen on national television. Oates will also uncover music never heard outside of the isolated hollows and back roads of America “roots” music, which has become the basis for nearly every American music genre heard today. At the end of each episode, Oates

will team up with the originators of that music to arrange and play those songs. The songs will be recorded and available for download at the end of each show. Young & Serious: Neil Young – who recently performed at Nikon at Jones Beach Theater – has joined forced with Promise Of The Real to release a new studio album, The Monsanto Years, on Reprise Records. The ecologically/environmentally focused album is now available via all retailers and in the Neil Young Official Online Store. The Monsanto Years is also available in a special CD + John DVD package, vinyl, Oates iTunes, and PonoMusic high-resolution audio. The vinyl package will be released this month. For this guitar-centric rock album, Young is joined by Promise Of The Real, an LAbased rock band featuring Lukas Nelson (vocals/guitar), Micah Nelson (guitar, vocals), Anthony Logerfo (drums), Corey McCormick (bass), and Tato Melgar (percussion). They have performed with their father, Willie Nelson, and Young on previous occasions. For the first time, they recorded together and will now tour under the banner of the “Rebel Content Tour.”

LONG ISLAND SOUNDS

The Best Music, The Best Venues Photos by Christopher Jon

Dispatch • The Space At Westbury

On June 30, the indie folk trio Dispatch stopped in at The Space at Westbury for an intimate show for Pandora listeners; it was yet another “pop-up concert” for those lucky enough to be invited to attend. Fans hailing from all over Long Island lined up around the block of the venue for this free event. Upon entering, fans were greeted with a free hat and wrist band; a photo booth and bar were located directly across the entrance; just past them was the main stage, where two Lexus sedans (advertisting tiein) were parked on display. Nice touches, but the unique music of Dispatch was the reason for the excitement among the patrons. Dispatch opened with “Bang Bang” and “Here We Go,” which were greeted warmly. “Two Coins,” “Flag,” and “Carry You” moved many in the crowd to dance or “jam out” with the band. The vibe of the audience was super friendly (which reflects the attitude and presence Dispatch gave back), and here’s proof: As a photographer timidly made his way to the crowd for what would usually be an uphill battle, a clear path was given to him as people patted him on the back, encouraging him to get as close as possible; one sweat-covered concertgoer even offered to put the lens jockey on his shoulders. A false start to “Flying Horses,” made the crowd laugh; the band began the song over. “Lightning” and “Bound” had fans dancing again before the last song of the set, “Elias.” As Dispatch made their way back to the stage, lead vocalist Brad Corrigan began to hammer away on acoustic guitar for the encore, “Outloud.” Pete Heimbold jammed out on the tambourine while Chad Urmston stayed steady on the bongos. Although a big hit in “The General” was not played, Dispatch delivered a solid performance on all fronts. – Christopher Jon

Action Bronson • The Paramount • Huntington

If you follow the hottest stars in today’s hip hop scene, the name Action Bronson should familiar – but if it isn’t, take a listen to his latest album, Mr. Wonderful, and sit back for a journey on a lyrical roller coaster. The Flushing rapper stopped at The Paramount as part of his 2015 world tour, and there was something in the air hinting it would be a special night – of course, that could of been due to the fact that there was actually something else in the air… and not just from the fans. Action Bronson may arguably be the genre’s biggest new star, with his raw, gritty, old school style rooting back to the streets of Queens. The former online cookturned rapper stepped on the stage and immediately turned heads with his skills and appearance; sporting no more than NBA shorts, a black T-shirt, and something burning from his mouth, Bronson stomped his way to the stage to deliver “Silverado.” Followed by newer songs “Brand New Car,” “The Rising,” and “Acting Crazy,” Bronson was here to make a mark among his home fans. When he finished “100 MPH,” he made his way to the top of The Paramount’s VIP section and performed “Strictly For My Jeeps” with one leg over the rail while the crowd below went nuts. More fun: Bronson threw huge bags filled with merchandise off the stage, causing a frenzy among the fans. Bronson ended with “Easy Rider,” and as the crowd chanted his name to return to the stage, he encored with “Contemporary Man.” After what was clearly a jam-packed performance, Action Bronson thanked his fans and left the stage. Heading to the exits, the crowd spread across the floor, searching for leftover gear that may have been missed. No such luck, but Bronson didn’t miss a mark on this wild night. – Christopher Jon

PERFORMANCE

The Favorite Sons Honor Their Own One of Long Island’s all-time favorite groups brought its “Sound Of Thunder” tour – in this case, a concert honoring the memory of drummer A.J. Pero – to Sayerville, New Jersey. With frontman Dee Snider reminding one of a cross between Roger Daltrey and Phyllis Diller but with serious abs, Twisted Sister is still quite a site to behold. The band went from the bars to the stars, and even found the always-in-the-news Snider testifying before the United States Senate back in 1985 along with John Denver and Frank Zappa. Exalted by MTV into America's consciousness, the group followed in the footsteps of Alice Cooper and The New York Dolls. They had less makeup than Kiss, but far more balls than your average Long Island bar band. Anthony Jude “A.J.” Pero was 55 when he died on March 20 of a heart attack. A.J. was reportedly traveling on the tour bus of the band Adrenaline Mob on their way to a show; the drummer was rushed to a hospital in upstate

Poughkeepsie, but could not be revived. Pero would often come to dine with the roadies, and he loved to mingle with his fans. Guitarist Jay Jay French was quoted: “The nice one died.” Pero loved the vocation he had chosen, and the people that surrounded him. It seems fitting that he passed on his way to rock, with the wheels of a tour bus rolling along. On this night, Twisted Sister performed an 18-song set, opening with “What You Don't Know (Sure

Twisted Sister • Starland Ballroom Can Hurt You).” The drum kit was handled studiously by Mike Portnoy, formally of Dream Theater and Adrenaline

Mob. The band did not skip a beat, with highlights including “Stay Hungry,” “The Beast,” “You Can't Stop Rock ‘N Roll,” “I Am (I'm Me),” and the band's signature tunes “We're Not Gonna Take It” and “I Wanna Rock.” Portnoy played a memorial solo with Pero’s image on a big screen while the audience chanted Pero’s name, and reacted with visceral

emotion. While the drummer's life was being celebrated, also was the band's history, which started in 1972; the theme of the set list seemed to be aimed at defying Father Time, who the aging rockers have realized is a real mother. Both a CD and DVD are set to be released of these memorial shows. The first of the concerts was in Las Vegas on May 30 at The Joint Hard Rock Hotel, with Skid Row also on the bill. The current line-up of Twisted Sister also includes Eddie “Fingers” Ojeda (lead and rhythm guitar), Mark “The Animal” Mendoza (bass); this lineup surely must rank among the longest-lasting in the rock world. Twisted Sister will hit a few dates around Europe and return to the USA; their last scheduled show is September 12 at The Grand Casino for The Grand Rocktember Music Festival III. According to reports, next year will bring the band’s final tour. – Bob Wilson

THE FOLD FESTIVAL:

ON THE AISLE The Odd Couple: Female Version • BroadHollow Theatre Elmont If you’ve never ventured out for an evening of live theater in Long Island, you may not know what to expect. Until recently, you could include us in that group as well; what follows is the first in planned series of reviews showcasing the best in area theater companies and productions. Trust us: Area theater can be as enjoyable as Broadway. Among the most famous stage comedies ever (and later film; even later, three different television series) is The Odd Couple, considered by many critics to be Neil Simon's funniest play. The exploits of messy Oscar Madison and tidy fussbudget Felix Unger have proven to be timeless. In 1984, Simon revived the show with a female cast; Sally Struthers and Rita Moreno got the original Broadway assignment in a show that wasn't quite the smash the male version was, but ran for close to a year with good notices. Among the changes: instead of Felix and Oscar, it's Florence and Olive; the Pigeon sisters have morphed into the Costazuela brothers; instead of poker, the show opens with four female friends playing a spirited game of Trivial Pursuit. For this production, it was during that board game when the audience met the

perfectly cast Cathy Chimenti as Olive, who brought knowing authenticity to a role that some actresses might not be inclined to perform. Chimenti's Olive managed to be sloppy and wry yet warm-hearted and kind at the same time, a truly fine and funny performance. Carol Carota, while not as naturally funny, took on the challenging role of Florence; lesser talents might have portrayed Florance as strident or simpleminded, yet Carota's nuanced acting gave the role the right touch of comic neurosis mixed with genuine pathos – particularly during her opening scene where she's distraught over her broken marriage. Buoyed by a solid supporting cast (Michael Chimenti and Gary Tifield as the brothers brought laughs from the moment they appeared on the stage), this simple production was just the tonic for a warm spring night. It wasn't total perfection (confusingly, the house lights stayed on during the first act of the opening night performance; Simon's update of the show referenced both e-mail and Chubby Checker, which doesn't work), but it's impossible not to enjoy prime Neil Simon in the hands of gifted performers. – Bob Smith

Gizmos, Gadgets, & The Latest Trends Gear Heads Yes, Suhr: Hot Product News From Long Island’s D’Addario

Long Island's D'Addario & Company and Suhr Guitars are both American-made music industry leaders, committed to designing, manufacturing and distributing exceptional strings and instruments. In March 2014, the two companies formed a unique partnership

when Suhr Guitars secretly switched the strings on their production floor to D'Addario's new NYXL model, the strongest string the company has ever made. Suhr's quality control staff noticed an immediate change: strings reached pitch stability faster, stayed in tune longer, and breaks became a thing of the past. D'Addario also kicked off its Play Fearlessly Project last year, a social initiative showcasing NYXL, with the donation of one Suhr Classic T

Antique guitar that was then outfitted with NYXL strings and took a tour of the USA. This project resulted in the "longest lick ever played" featuring both amateur and professional musicians (Keith Urban, Blake Mills, Vernon Reid, and more), experiencing NYXL strings; hheck it out at playfearlessly.com. Since the secret switch last year, Suhr now strings their entire line of electric guitars with NYXLs. Each guitar also comes with D'Addario's new NYXL Luthier Booklet, which tells the story of this partnership. "Suhr Guitars is the perfect partner for D'Addario's NYXL strings," said the company's U.S. sales manager, Peter D'Addario. "These guys are making some incredible instruments. Like us, they are passionate about building the best tools for guitarists in the world." Joshua Smith of Suhr added: "D'Addario and Suhr share the philosophy that combining the finest components with innovative production techniques produces an exceptional product of the highest quality. In 2014, when they asked us to put a ‘top secret’ string to the test, we found NYXLs to have a quicker break-in period, more upper midrange punch, improved tuning stability and bend further with less breakage."

D'Addario also recently announced the addition of nine new sets to their strongest guitar string line ever, the NYXL. On May 15,

this addition made a total of 15 NYXL sets available, now including 12-60, 12-54, 13-56, 12-52, 11-56, 11-52, 9.5-44 and Balanced Tension 9-40 and 10-46. Envisioned, perfected, and manufactured by D'Addario in Long Island, this newly engineered, break-resistant, high-carbon steel core and plain steel alloy delivers a whole new level of freedom, confidence, and power. NYXL's provide more strength and tuning stability. Learn more at daddario.com.

Shenole Latimer LI’s Sax Star Bids Us Farewell ... But Not Goodbye

Who: One of the finest jazz musicians iin the area, the charismatic Shenole Latimer, has made an indelible mark in the area music scene. In addition to appearing in every top jazz venue in the region, his 2006 album Front & Center represented a high-water mark in area jazz recordings. He’s just about done it all ... but Latimer recently announced he’s leaving Long Island. What follows is his up-to-date story, provided exclusively to Good Times: From Shenole Latimer: “It was the summer of 1995. The room was dark and I was scared out of my mind. I took a deep breath and slowly opened my eyes. Nervously, I gazed at what was occurring in front of me. The scene was surreal and everything was moving in slow motion. I could see about 70 people, in various stages of drunkenness, who were ready to rock & roll. Suddenly, I heard the clicking of two drumsticks striking each other in a count-off. After the fourth click, my left pinky and thumb struck two ‘C’ keys that were an octave apart from each other on the lower register of my keyboard, and that was the instant that I not only played the song ‘Jump’ by Van Halen for the first time in front of a paying public, but that I also launched myself into a 20-year journey into the Long Island music scene and beyond. “My musical rollercoaster began as a keyboardist, twisted into fusion, bumped me into becoming a jazz saxophonist, thrusted me into a period as the Education Director for East End Arts (the arts council based in Riverhead), and glided me into what I refer to as the musical omniverse. Over the years, I have experienced performing in venues ranging from a barn to the 50-yard line of Giants Stadium for a corporate convention. There have been gigs in front of only one listener and gigs in front of an audience of thousands. I have performed in 39 of the lower 48 states via self-booked tours, and met untold numbers of wonderful people and incredible musicians. I have won awards, gained endorsements and corporate sponsors, and have been blessed to have not only recorded with talented artists on their albums, but have also managed to record one of my own. That album, Front And Center, and can be downloaded on iTunes. “All of these experiences and accomplishments would not have been made possible had it not been for three things; the first vital ingredient was a support system ... my mother. She passed away in April 2014, but she did everything she could to support my interests. I would advise any artist to find or create some kind of support system around themselves. I learned, painfully so, that one person can never do absolutely everything. Some of us are fortunate enough to have family members who are supportive. Other artists may need to turn to friends or their fans, but having a support system is something I cannot stress enough. “A second component was my hunger to work hard in my quest to succeed. I’m certain that any artists reading this article can relate to the need to be focused, work hard, and stay motivated. Remember to find ways to work smarter, not harder. That isn’t a ‘politically correct’ way of telling you to be lazy – it refers to finding creative ways to solve problems efficiently within the mindset of being a self-employed artist. “The third factor is Long Island. When I was a younger man, I hated the Long Island scene. I cursed what many musicians, myself included, called the ‘Great Cultural Wasteland.’ But I gradually came to the realization that Long Island has many resources, such as art councils, venues, media outlets, and most importantly people who are starved for entertainment that can help them forget about the tedium of their daily 9 to 5. I gradually formulated the opinion that the success of any artist depends more on his or her ability to effectively utilize and maximize whatever opportunities exist, whether it is here on Long Island or anywhere else. “For my entire life, I have been a resident of Long Island. But now, it is time for me to continue my musical rollercoaster ride into a new location: Within the next week or two, I will move to Florida. The reasons for my move are many, and frankly irrelevant to the greater point: We as artists, as musicians, and as human beings, must resolve ourselves to work hard, be smart, plan, take advantage of whatever our region has to offer, and surround ourselves with the right people in order to propel ourselves to our goals. “I am supremely grateful to all of the people who either directly or indirectly impacted my music and personal life in a positive fashion, I am thankful to have been able to play music full-time for most of my adult life, and I am truly blessed to have had so many incredible fans over the years here on Long Island. Thank you all for everything! I invite you to keep up with my future endeavors by joining my email list at shenole.com. If you are on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube or Instagram, just do a search on my name and drop me a quick hello or ask me questions about the music scene. I am always happy to share whatever I have learned from this musician’s life!”

RHYTHM TRACKING Amy Always: Music films and films based on rock or pop are frequently hard sells. Film studios are always paralyzed with fear that it's a “music movie.” There are battles on how to present it: Should it be geared to hardcore fans, and then try to spread it to the general public, or try to snare the public first and hope the fans are just happy that a film was

voice and performance were as impeccable as ever. The speech he delivered should become required reading for the new breed of stars; it was an almost harsh lecture on “becoming full of yourself," "haughty and self-absorbed.” I thought everything about his time on stage was stunning, well executed, and well deserved. I believe that, to this day, that Robinson still does not get the same respect that eventually was given to his fellow Motown labelmates Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. Perhaps he didn't deliver any of the socially relevant material that they both did, but it doesn't make him any less important or iconic than those two. The Beatles loved Robinson and covered his songs in the early days; Bob Dylan called him America's greatest living poet. I agree with Lennon, McCartney, and Dylan – Smokey is a natural resource and a national treasure. Bad Girls: It seems some current pop stars want to be like rock stars used to be. Iggy Azalea and Ariana Grande have put their respective feet into their mouths, affecting sales and airplay and giving their record labels nervous breakdowns. Ariana was caught on video saying that she hates America and Americans; we all act out and say stupid things when we're young – right, "Bigger than Jesus" John Lennon or "Hanoi" Jane Fonda?

made about their favorite artist? The excellent Looking For Johnny, an exciting rock & roll movie, didn't make its way into as many theaters as it should have. The fear was that many people didn't know who Thunders was – but that defeats the point of it being a great movie that would have flown on word of mouth and a brilliant soundtrack album. I still find it astounding that this movie hasn't made its way onto VH1 Classic or one of the pay cable film channels. For that matter, an Andy Summers film – a documentary covering The Police, who were kind of popular in the 80s – was impossible to find anywhere; the same was true for Ariana the Stamp/Lambert film we Grande covered here about the two guys who got The Who off the ground. I thereby am so happy that Amy Winehouse, who had one big hit in America, "Rehab," is the subject of a film, Amy, about her short but powerful life in and out of the music business. The film is making good money in the U.K. and in America, and it really didn't cost all that much to make, so perhaps it will reignite interest in this type of production. If you haven't seen Amy yet, by The list is actually endless if we all means get to the theater now really want to go there, but one thing (but make sure that you see has changed since John and Jane Ant-Man first!). screwed up: The Internet and social media capture everything these days, Still Smokey: I must mention and transmits everything worldwide Smokey Robinson's appearance on instantly. Think before you speak, the recent BET Awards, where he children. I like Grande as a pop artist, received a long overdue "lifetime" but she needs to put a lid on it. award. He sang and spoke, and his

California metallers Huntress have completed their third album, Static, to be released via Napalm Records on September 25. Huntress vocalist Jill Janus comments: "The evolution of Huntress bleeds into Static, our third and most prolific album. It is the heaviest and catchiest record we've written. The process of writing and recording was new and exciting, at times very difficult for all involved, having to record in between relentless touring. Never have I been so honest in my approach to songwriting; I reveal life-long personal obstacles that I previously feared weaving into my lyrics. I'm so pleased to reveal the cover art for Static by my treasured art warlock Vance Kelly. Hail heavy metal!" Huntress will hit the high seas this September as part of the Mötorboat Cruise; more info: HuntressKills.com.
