They crown a Sweet Potato Queen and a Little Miss Tater Tot for little girls. I only

competed for Little Miss Tater Tot once, when I was about three, and lost miserably to a girl in a sparklier dress.” The pageant world, with its fake smiles and sky-high hairdos, wasn’t the best match for Musgraves. She was more interested in songwriting, finishing her first tune at 9 years old and learning her first instrument,

the mandolin, as a preteen. Years later, though, the peculiarities of daily life in a small town — along with the places she’s visited (and people she’s met) since moving away — are back on her mind. It’s been years since Musgraves lived in Golden, Texas, her childhood home of roughly 600 people, but the whirlwind that followed Same Trailer Different Park — a debut album that topped the country charts, took home two Grammy Awards (including Country Album of the Year) and sent Musgraves halfway across the world on tour — made her think hard about where she came from. Pageant Material, her second album, pays tribute to those Bible Belt roots, shining a light on a hometown girl who’s grown up, expanded her worldview and done a lot of livin’ since skipping town. It’s an album about where she’s from and where she’s going, full of autobiographical details that are humorous and heartwarming.

Unfortunately, the Knicks had the fourth pick in a draft which appeared to have only three almost-certain-to-have high impact players: University of Kentucky center/forward KarlAnthony Towns, Duke center Jahlil Okafor, and Ohio State guard D’Angelo Russell.

oerster's Fine Finale: Rob Foerster of East Meadow received the type of birthday present that most serious bowlers would enjoy: a cool $1,000 for winning the Long Island Generations Bowling Tour's (LIBGT) Friday, June 19 event at AMF Wantagh Lanes. Foerster captured his third LIGBT title when he defeated second-place finisher Sam Cooke of Patchogue ($500) to win the title with a 12-pin margin. A game Damilyn LaCarruba of Lindenhurst finished third, worth $300, while Ronkonkoma's Joe Kingston earned a fourth-place award of $250. The AMF Wantagh tournament drew 104 entries, advanced 19 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $3,920 plus two Brunswick bowling balls. High series of the tournament was shot by Bobby Wunsch of East Meadow with an 873 in the 7 pm squad. Knicks president Phil Jackson knew that he was behind the proverbial eight-ball even before Thursday’s proceedings, because he had no luck in last month’s draft lottery that determined order of teams picking players. The ping-pong balls worked against the Knicks, who in the old days would have had the second pick based on their putrid 17-65 record. Jackson decided to roll the dice by selecting Porzingis, 19, who has played professionally in Seville, Spain and has reminded many of a young Dirk Nowitzki. The Knicks fans at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, site of the Draft, lustily booed the selection. Porzingis, who speaks better English than a lot of Americans, displayed poise by taking it all in stride. He told the media that he understood that NBA fans were far more familiar with college hoops stars thanks to American television than they were with European pros. The big concern for fans is whether the rail-thin Porzingis is ready to be a major contributor to the Knicks. The media had a field day with the pick, because apparently superstar Carmelo Anthony has his doubts about Porzingis’ ability to improve the Knicks immediately. “Melo” may be right, but given the current state of the Knicks it would be absurd to expect the team to be a serious contender for an NBA title next season. Jackson can breathe a sigh of relief in knowing that a longtime habitue of Madison Square Garden’s “celebrity row,” actor Steve Schirripa (who played Bobby Baccala on HBO’s “The Sopranos” and recently launched his own line of pasta sauces, “Uncle Steve’s”) is impressed with Porzingis’s height and talent. Don't blame Hollywood – blame yourselves, America. There are so many terrible things that audiences have not only accepted but made bonafide hits out of during the past 50 years that make that eternal question, What were we thinking?, seems woefully inadequate. From the “Batman” TV series to “Gilligan's Island” to Zager & Evans and The Cowsills all the way to “The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills” and “The Jerry Springer Show” to Nicki Minaj and Nickelback, North America has a lot to apologize to the rest of the world for … those things, of course, as well as not one but two “comedy films” featuring a talking stuffed bear. If anyone's counting, the wildly overrated Seth McFarlane shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a film lens ever again; apparently, the flops of TV's “Dads” and his horrific last feature, A Million Ways To Die In the West, haven't been enough to prompt studios such as Universal to shut off the green The Stony Brook Film Festival is celebrating 20 years this summer, and the organizers of this popular summer movie tradition been proud to showcase many films with actors who have gone on to successful careers, including Jeremy Renner, Kristen Stewart, Virginia Madsen, Elle Fanning, and more. Screened in Staller Center's Main Stage Theatre at Stony Brook University, the 20th annual Stony Brook Film Festival promises to entertain, enlighten, and challenge. An international selection of new independent features, documentaries, and shorts will be shown throughout 10 evenings, from Thursday, July 16 through Saturday, July 25, with many premieres in the mix. And make no mistake – Ted 2 has no reason to exist other than to prove people will buy anything, even at $12 a clip backed by an $8 popcorn-and-soda “special.” If you at least saw TV ads for the original Ted film, you know that a stuffed bear come to life is a foul-mouthed, rude, vicious, mean-spirited, slovenly creep. Since these qualities aren't considered positive attributes for people, why are they considered “funny” because they come from a toy? And if you come to see Ted 2, expect a lot of cum; there are more semen and masturbation jokes in this film than offered in any media since the July 2012 issue of Hustler. That seems to be the level of audience this film strives for – or perhaps it's the

11-year-old that yells “pee pee!” and laughs hysterically at his own cleverness. Either way, this movie is the cinematic equivalent of Hungry Hungry Hippos, which that same slob kid managed to smash into pieces the first time he played with it. The worst part of all this is that the cast does what it can; none of the performances can be designated as faulty. Mark Wahlberg as John is about as likable as he's ever been; Jessica Barth as Ted's “wife,” Tami-Lynn, is as capable at comedy as she is beautiful. Amanda Seyfried is neither good nor bad as a perpetually stoned family counselor; there are great cameos from Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman, among about a dozen others. American Independent features include the romantic comedy This Isn’t Funny starring Paul Ashton and Katie Page, who are the scriptwriters and co-producers. Ashton directed this story about a standup comedienne coping with an anxiety disorder. The feature film Jackie & Ryan stars Katherine Heigl and Ben Barnes and directed by Ami Canaan Mann, who was inspired by street musicians she met in Austin, Texas at South by Southwest Festival. Jackie & Ryan centers in the mountains of Ogden, Utah, where a musician and train hopper meets a former singer at a crossroads in her life. Wildike, written and directed by Frank Hall Green, stars Ella Purnell as a troubled teenager who is sent to live with her uncle in Alaska. Bruce Greenwood (Star Trek, Mad Men) and Brian Gerahty (The Hurt Locker) also star. Tom Paxton headlines the 10th annual Huntington Folk Festival on Sunday, July 26 at Huntington’s Heckscher Park, located off Main Street (Route 25A) and Prime Avenue. Extending from noon until l0:30 pm, the free festival – presented by The Folk Music Society of Huntington (fmsh.org) and The Huntington Arts Council (huntingtonarts.org) – is part of the 50th annual Huntington Summer Arts Festival. Festivalgoers are advised to bring lawn chairs and blankets and a picnic supper. Paxton, the influential folksinger-songwriter – known for such songs as “The Last Thing On My Mind,” “Bottle Of Wine,” “Whose Garden Was This” and “Ramblin’ Josh Boy” – formerly lived in Long Island and Joffen plans to retire from the road this summer after more than a half-century as a touring artist. A Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, Paxton also has had his songs covered by many artists. Opening for Paxton at 8:30 pm will be No Fuss and Feathers Roadshow, featuring touring New York area-based singer-songwriters The YaYas (Jay Mafale and Catherine Miles), Carolann Solebello, and Karyn Oliver. We wanted to come back as a full functioning musical force and creatively pick up where we left off with Fantastic Planet. That meant we needed to start experimenting in the studio first, which we did in late 2013. After a few months, we came to the conclusion that we were having a good time and that we liked the results, and

that we thought the results were definitely Failure. We’ve been chipping away at a new album this whole time.” In that same article, Andrews and Edwards said that their approach to writing and recording Fantastic Planet and The Heart Is A Monster have been similar, saying “The songs on Fantastic Planet appear more or less in the order that we wrote them … when, we do a song now, we write it and record it soup-to-nuts without moving to another song … It takes longer, but it makes more sense for us artistically to explore a song completely before you move on.”

When you hear "Fallin'" on the radio, remember where you read about it first! Ant-Man Arrives: In the pop culture department, I have not made a secret of my longtime devotion to Marvel and the subsequent films that have been spawned by the comic book heroes. Of particular interest to me was Ant-Man; I had a letter printed in Entertainment Weekly years ago, when the first Avengers film was released. I bemoaned the exclusion of original Avengers Ant-Man and The Wasp, who, for reasons then unknown, were not given their place at the table alongside Iron Man, Thor, and The Hulk, who were also part of the original lineup. Entertainment Weekly turned my brief letter into a half-page feature about the two missing characters; shortly thereafter, Marvel went into high gear about getting the Ant-Man project, which had reportedly been stalled by Edgar Wright, off the ground. Now, a star-studded lineup including Michael Douglas, Paul Rudd, and Evangeline Lilly finally hits heaters as a 2015 summer blockbuster, and a large, triumphant grin takes control of my face. Mission accomplished!

Rolling Thunders: The flow of goodies related to the late, great New York Doll and Heartbreaker, Johnny Thunders, continues unabated. Last year, everything was about Looking For Johnny (the film and soundtrack album). This year, some great lost live gigs make their way into our hands. The international indie label of the year, Jungle Records U.K., has released a multi color-splash vinyl double album of the lost, legendary Heartbreakers: Live At Max's Kansas City release, which includes the original full show as well as never-before released tracks that were destined for a Live! Vol. 2 that never saw the light of day. It hit the streets on Record Store Day and is already one of the most sought-after items from that event; it's already almost impossible to find (I bought mine via Amazon.com). Also: The Cleopatra Records label has released a CD gatefold package, Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers L.A.M.F. – Live At The Village Gate 1977, which is a dynamic and exciting trip back to the glory that was New York City punk. Joy Williams’ new solo album, Venus, was released at the end of June via Sensibility Music / Columbia Records. The new effort marks her first full-length solo album since forming the multiple Grammy Award-winning duo The Civil Wars, a musical partnership that ended in 2014. Williams’ album includes the new single “Before I Sleep,” and also contains the previously released tracks “Until The Levee,” “What a Good Woman Does,” and “Sweet Love of Mine.”

Formerly (and literally) stored away in an attic, this performance was filmed for US television in 1971, shortly after the Stones had finished their 1971 “Farewell Tour” of the UK, and a month before the release of the album Sticky Fingers. Stunning U.K. chanteuse Gabrielle Aplin, who made waves in this country with last year's English Rain EP, will mark her official U.S. debut with the release of Light Up The Dark on September 18. The album follows her overseas success, where she's enjoyed #1 chart positions in both the U.K. and Australia. The new album features title track "Light Up The Dark," mixed by Craig Silvey (Arcade Fire, Florence + The Machine). Aplin drew inspiration largely from her longtime idol Joni Mitchell. "Her voice is just here, right at the front, and everything sits around it perfectly," said Aplin, adding, "I've also become much more comfortable writing songs about other people's stories as well as my own.”
