SportsBeat New York Mets manager Terry Collins seemed exasperated at one of his daily pre-game press conferences during the Mets last homestand as he had to explain that he is using a five-man starting pitching rotation and not a six-man Dilson rotation. Collins Herrera did clarify that a sixth starter could pop in when there are a lot of games in a short time span. Collins admitted that upper management wanted him to estimate how many innings each of his starters will throw this year, barring injury. Estimated innings pitched and game pitch counts are akin to the accounting concepts of depreciation and budgeting.

Depreciation is an artful way of measuring wear and tear in plant assets, while budgeting takes into account actual costs versus what was initially projected.

I asked the Mets manager if these kind of accounting concepts were always part of baseball: “Actually, it’s one of the changes that have occurred in baseball in recent years,” said Collins.

“I never knew what a pitch count was until I was working for the Dodgers in their minor league system, and they told me to limit Sid Fernandez to no more than 135 pitches in a game.”

Former ESPN president George Bodenheimer, hired to work in the company’s mail room in 1981 and rose through the ranks to serve as the president of the network from 1998 to 2011, has written his first book, Every Town Is A Sports Town (Grand Central Publishing).

Bodenheimer recounts the early days when cable operators had their doubts about carrying ESPN. He writes as well about the development of the network’s flagship show, SportsCenter, and the air personalities that made their way through the company’s headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut.

One of the things that has made Bodenheimer one of the most popular executives in television history is his approachability and low-key style. He could have probably had a best-seller if he had told a few tales out of school, but that is not his style. He even goes easy on Keith Olbermann, who left ESPN in a huff and then had to come crawling back years later when it seemed that no other network would touch

I was saddened to learn of the death of Virgil Runnels, better known as professional wrestler Dusty Rhodes. What made him beloved is that he developed a populist persona that echoed the dreams and frustrations of the working class.

Wrestling promoters liked to pit Rhodes against Ric Flair, who played the part of the wealthy snob who had no regard for the concerns of, as the late Leona Helmsley might say, “the little people.” Outside the wrestling ring, the two mat stars were friends.

his illness … Former Beatle Paul McCartney added two extra dates to his recent “Out There” tour: June 23 at The John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Virginia, and June 25 at the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, South Carolina, which surprised his fans.

Accompanying “Macca” on stage was his backup band for many years now: Paul "Wix" Wickens (keyboards), Brian Ray (bass/guitar), Rusty Anderson (guitar), and Abe Laboriel Jr (drums) …Carly Simon has the re-released The Bedroom Tapes in a special edition through her own boutique label, C‘EST Music (Pronounced “Say”) in conjunction with Carly Simon Vintage. Originally released in 2000 through Arista and then unavailable shortly after its initial release, Simon is now making The Bedroom Tapes available to her fans with the addition of two rare bonus tracks: “Grandmother’s House” and “When Manhattan Was A Maiden.” The CD is available at carlysimon.com.

Love & Mercy

Starring John Cusack, Paul Dano, Elizabeth Banks, Paul Giamotti Directed by Bill Pohlad Lionsgate

Most entertainment fans know John Stamos from his TV roles (“Full House”), but he started out his career as a drummer and has performed in many Beach Boys songs and concerts. We ran into him at the Fox TV “upfront” last month and asked if he had seen Love & Mercy, this biopic on Beach Boys founder Brian Wilson: “No, I haven’t seen it yet, but I plan to,“ said Stamos. “It’s a tough story to tell.”

Bill Pohlad, the director of Love & Mercy, would certainly concur with Stamos. In an unusual casting twist, there are two actors portraying Wilson: Paul Dano is the young Brian, who creates some of the most memorable music of the mid- to late-1960s, while John Cusack is the Brian Wilson of the mid1980s, whose best days musically appear to be behind him and whose life has spiraled out of control. Pohlad elected not to tell the story sequentially, but rather have the younger and older versions of Wilson appear in alternating scenes. Thankfully, the toggling between the mid-60s and mid-80s does not make it harder to concentrate on the story – if anything, it makes the story of Wilson’s lifelong struggles more poignant.

By 1965, The Beach Boys were established as hitmakers who espoused idyllic California youth pursuits such as surfing, cars, and attractive girls.

The 23-year-old Wilson, however, wants to write about more adult topics, and begins the process of creating one of the most revered rock albums in

history, Pet Sounds. Sadly, The Beach Boys’ label, Capitol Records, did not truly support the record – nor did Beach Boys frontman Mike Love (Jake Abel), who was concerned about messing with a successful musical formula. Brian’s biggest nemesis was his father, Murry Wilson (Bill Camp), a musician manque who was jealous of his son’s success, and enjoyed criticizing and humiliating his son any chance that he could. Even worse, Murry was a physically abusive brute who would routinely pummel Brian as a boy; he may have been responsible for the severe loss of hearing in Brian’s right ear.

Just as Brian had to battle his dad in his 20s, he has to take on a new bully in his 40s: psychotherapist Dr. Eugene Landy (Paul Giamotti). Wilson always had mental issues, and Landy managed to make himself Brian’s guardian who monitors every aspect of Wilson’s life and doesn’t give him a moment of

privacy. “Dr. Gene” even tags along on Brian’s date with Melinda Ledbetter (Banks), a car salesperson.

While Melinda knows of Wilson’s musical accomplishments, she is no rock groupie. She is attracted to his refreshing lack of guile; he says exactly what he is thinking without a filter. When Melinda sees Landy over-medicating Wilson to the point where he is almost a zombie, she decides to take action legal against Landy.

Love & Mercy works well, as the script is true to Beach Boys history. The acting is fine, as Dano gives Brian boyish charm as he struggles with the “genius” tag, while Cusack plays him as a catatonic slowly trying to regain his life. Banks is superb as Melinda, who would eventually become Brian’s wife. The scene stealer, as is his custom, is Giamotti, who tackles Dr. Landy as a person who exudes charm one moment and psychotic anger the next.

Things we didn't expect in 2015: Caitlyn Jenner, the New York Mets being no-hit by a rookie pitcher, those day-glo bikinis, and Melissa McCarthy starring in a comedy that's actually good.

Just about everybody who is into humor has been waiting for a role for McCarthy that actually allows the star to sink her sizable comedic chops into something other than a pratfall – and she can thank writer/director Paul Feig, who gave her the scene-stealing role in Bridesmaids that started her ascent, for the role that likely will keep her star blazing hot for a few more years to come.

Many reviewers are dubbing Spy as a feminist-centric comedy, but don't believe the hype: It's just a strong story with so many laughs in the process that it manages to thrill the brain at the same time it tickles the funny bone. The plot is simple, yet it works: McCarthy plays Susan Cooper, who works a desk job as an effective and smart CIA analyst, but in that role she’s been the backbone of the organization despite her work having all the glamour of the cleaning crew.

Things change seriously after her partner (Law)

and another agent (Statham) get into some serious trouble; Susan volunteers to actually go into the field as an agent and try to get to the bottom of the activities of a vicious Bulgarian global arms dealer (a ravishing and over-the-top Byrne) – an assignment as important as anything The Man From U.N.C.L.E. or James Bond ever tackled.

This all sounds quite serious, but Susan getting busy is where the fun starts. McCarthy is a riot posing as a cat lady and other goofy types as she infiltrates the dastardly goings on. The gifted

comedian rolls with every pose, but she may be at her best as she becomes herself, a truly doublefisted crimefighter, intent on bringing justice to the world – and to prove that those that doubted her abilities were dead wrong.

Despite Spy’s creepy villians and adult themes, this is what comedy films should be about: We’ll be darned if we didn’t laugh throughout this one.

Congratulations, Hollywood: A couple more films like this and you just might figure out how to make big-budget comedies once again.

Picnic Supper Concerts In Port Jefferson

Beginning on July 1, The Greater Port Jefferson-Northern Brookhaven Arts Council will present its annual concert series, Picnic Supper Concerts, on the lawn of Harborside Park on the water next To the Port Jefferson Village Center, located 101 East Broadway in Port Jefferson; for more informantion and show times, log on to gpjac.org.

Gene Casey & The Lone Sharks Since 2009, these concerts have have grown in popularity, appeal to audiences of all ages, and are free to the public.

Concertgoers are encouraged to bring a picnic supper and their own blankets or lawn chairs. A small playground is adjacent to the concert area, so parents can enjoy the music while amusing children who cannot sit still.

Theses concerts are rain or shine. The Village of Port Jefferson will move the concerts indoors to The Port Jefferson Village Center if inclimate weather threatens. If so, those attending can bring their chairs indoors; dogs are not permitted inside the PJVC. This year’s schedule of artists includes vocal groups, acoustic blues, new folk/classical fusion, rockabilly & twang, bluegrass, up-and-coming young folk/rock ensembles, and originals. The Who • Nassau Coliseum • Uniondale The Who stopped at Long Island’s Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on May 20 for a performance during their final North American Tour, “The Who Hits 50,” which included some unusual nail-biting moments for the audience.

As fans made their way to their seats waiting for Long Islander Joan Jett to open up, a big screen onstage flashed messages stating that Who singer Roger Daltrey has a marijuana allergy, and asked the fans to refrain from smoking while The Who performed. Yet, as Joan Jett & The Blackhearts rocked the house with “Bad Reputation” and “Cherry Bomb,” smoke started to flow up and around. Jett paid homage to her home city during “I Love Rock and Roll,” which earned her a standing ovation; as Jett and her band walked off, the smoke never cleared. She humbly thanked her fans and her rocking band, and as they walked off, the smoke

still had not dissipated.

When Daltrey and guitarist Pete Townshend took the stage, the crowd was primed for classics – but as Daltrey and the band started off with “I Can’t Explain,” the singer was instantly affected by the smoke that lingered in the building. Daltrey spoke to the crowd numerous times, threatening to walk off stage becuase his voice was “shutting down.” Indeed, his voice was noticeably affected during the first few songs; the aggravation was getting to Daltrey to such an extent that Townshend had to cut the tension with a few words, hinting to the crowd that even though Daltrey was upset, they’d sport a unique sense of humor and keep the good vibes and energy going.

To the crowd’s (and Daltrey’s) happy surprise, the smoke cleared; Daltrey’s pipes recoved and got stronger. During “Pinball Wizard,” “The Kids Are Alright,” and “Love Reign O’er Me,” Daltrey’s voice practially shot through the roof, while Townshend’s guitar playing peeled the paint off the walls. Ending the night with “Baba O’Riley” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” all the tension of the early show was put to rest as The Who performed a sterling two-hour, 21-song set that served as a rock history lesson.

Matt Butler • Bowery Electric • New York City Matt Butler is a New York Citybased singer/songwriter who is somehow creating a buzz in a town that has seen it all. His new single, “Ride Again,” is a testament to his burgeoning songwriting prowess; it’s a classic Tom Petty-esque groove held together by a catchy chorus hook. To celebrate the new release, Butler and his band (featuring members of Norah Jones' backing band, The Candles) took the stage and delivered what proved to be his strongest performance to date.

The band kicked things off with a rousing version of Buce Springsteen's “State Trooper,” which was well received by the packed house. Butler and band were in good spirits, and their professional stage presence was on full display as they worked their way through new songs and fan favorites. Highlights included “Young Man's Prison,” a bluesy tale of a trip to Riker's Island, and

“Ashes In The Snow,” a ballad that details the perils of being “hopelessly in love and hopelessly addicted to drugs.” The band, Josh Lattanzi (guitar), Wes Hutchinson (bass), John Badamo (drums), and Kurt Thum (keyboards), provided fine-tuned muscle to the proceedings, which complimented Butler's rootsy folk/rock arrangements.

The group closed the show with spirited renditions of The Verve's “Lucky Man” and Tom Petty's “You Wreck Me,” but it was the new“Ride Again” that was the high point of the evening; it provided further proof that songwriting, when done right, can be as timeless as the sounds that inspired it. Dijon Dream (EP) Independent

Who: Dijon is a relatively new Sea Cliff-based hard rock/alternative band that released this EP in March. Members include Chris Damphouse (vocals), Max Ross (guitar, keyboards, background vocals), Simon Januses (bass), Carl Ferrara (guitar), and Andrew Herrara (drums). This new disc was recorded at On Track Studios in Ronkonkoma by Tom Fatorusso.

The summertime has arrived and we all know what that means. It’s time for festival after festival and show after show to go on all throughout the next two to three months. With all these happenings, it is easy to get lost in the plethora of events that take over the NYC area at this time. Let’s take a look at some of the events and places you should be going to this summer to get your EDM fix and to get the truly right experience for you.

Electric Zoo: C’mon folks, this is a given. If you live in the tri-state area and you haven’t heard of EZoo, then something’s gotta be wrong with you.

They haven’t had the best of luck in the past 2 years with the cancellation of Day 3 for various reasons, but they are completely revamping this year for Electric Zoo: Transformed.

There will be “bigger stages, brighter lights, and recharged production.” They have expanded their talent selection to include a multitude of different genres of acts to please every type of festival-goer imaginable. ID&T, the folks behind TomorrowWorld and Mysteryland USA, will be getting involved to give the festi- Tom val an extra boost that will Swoon make EZoo really shine this year. Ticket prices have been put at an all time low with a 3-day general admission pass costing only $239. I was honestly amazed when I saw this, as Ultra Music Festival was $500 just 2 years ago. Electric Zoo is really stepping it up and I can’t wait to see what they’ve added and have to offer for 2015.

Webster Hall: Now, I like to talk about Webster Hall because they are the epitome of what a good club should be. They have a mixture of nights and have 4 floors of DIFFERENT sound. Yes, that means for $20 you can go into Webster and hear several different styles of music as well as many different big names, all in the same night. Their Saturday night event is called “Brite Nites” and has some EDM icons coming through this summer including Jay Hardway, Bassjackers, and Datsik. In addition, they have their BASSment on Saturday, with the filthiest dubstep

and trap one could possibly imagine. For the price and the location, Webster Hall is the place to hit up on Saturday night.

Lavo: Lavo is part Italian restaurant and part nightclub. Seems like an interesting combo to say the least, but it actually works quite well. You can eat a nice, fancy meal; then head up to the dancefloor and spend the rest of the night partying hard. They have superstar acts coming in through the next couple of weeks including AN21, Tom Swoon, and Quintino. It’s the perfect mix of elegant and crazy, all bundled into a little spot right near Central Park.

It wouldn’t be a fitting column for me if I didn’t let you in on some of the stuff I’ve been listening to and haven’t been able to stop doing so. As you may or may not know, I am an avid fan of dubstep; to the point where I will blast it throughout the middle of the day. Well, Zomboy has just released his “Resurrected” album, which contains a mixture of original tracks and remixes of past Zomboy tracks. To say the least, this album goes HARD! Every track is a banger and knocks you on your ass. I don’t usually buy my music, but this is an album I was willing to put the money into because I knew it was gonna be that good. Now, I understand dubstep isn’t for

everyone, so I can compromise and tell you about some of the, hmm, “lighter” EDM I’ve been listening to.

There are some key Calvin Harris songs that have been remixed to perfection. I’m talking about two in particular and those are “Outside (Royalty Remix)” and the “Blame (Alisky Remix)”. We have chill trap and future house genres, respectively, giving a new life to older songs. I’m not a fan of the originals, but the remixes certainly have that special something in them that make you want to put them on repeat. I never thought I would get much into calmer EDM, but it certainly has its perks and is definitely more acceptable to play when there are friends around.

RHYTHM TRACKING Then ... I recently emceed the 50th anniversary Max’s Kansas City, the New York City underground nightspot that opened in 1965. It was put on the map by Andy Warhol, who started hanging out there, followed by the rest of 1960s pop culture. For this event, The Bowery Electric played host to bands who were there then, such as the electrifying Luigi & The Wiseguys, whose Live At Max's 1979 CD is a must-have; the iconic Rattlers; the original Testors; Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Ricky Byrd, who

females between the ages of 8 and 18 who had the time of their lives waiting for their faves to take the stage: Nick Jonas, Flo Rida, Carly Rae Jepsen, Echosmith, and all the rest. The kids knew all the words to all the songs and sang along at the top of their lungs, which was earshattering; 14,000 or so voices all at once.

The WBLI on-air personalities emceed, including current favorites Dana DiDonato & Jayson, and longtime ‘BLI-er Al Levine. It followed in the fine tradition of the 1960s shows hosted by radio stars such as my pals Murray The K and Cousin Brucie Morrow (who was my very first major interview in 1970, when he was the nighttime jock on AM 77 WABC). The added bonus was meeting and chatting with News 12's fab Elisa De Stefano, who I spoke with at the VIP table while we waited for our “insider” passes.

The one noticeable difference at the concert was the kids and their phones; many of them paid most if not all, of their attention to their phones than they did to the actual show. This is just a sign of the times: Selfies rule, of course, and everywhere you turned, kids were taking pictures of themselves and each other. Music is still a major part of young peoples' lives, but it serves a different purpose now as the stars are no longer people the kids want to get close to; the stars are who the kids want to be. This was probably always the case in pop music, but it was never an available reality until social media made it so. Trust me: Even the AARP card holders at the Max's 50th party were guilty of the same thing (yes, me too!).

What can I tell you? The beat goes on!

It was a throwback to the days of the trend-setting clubs, and an audience that was as colorful and interesting as the performers on stage. Social media certainly helped people find out about the shows at Bowery Electric, which were sold out every night, while the regular media chose to ignore the event. In the old days, that would have been the kiss of death, so thank you, social media, Facebook, and Twitter for balancing the scales and blowing away the self-appointed gatekeepers who mean nothing anymore, as Rolling Stone is finding out at the moment.
