A major reason many New York Mets fans were optimistic about that 2015 season was that ace pitcher Matt Harvey would return to the mound after missing all of 2014 recovering from Tommy John surgery. Harvey’s comeback was not just a New York story but a national one, as he graced the cover of USA Today Sports Weekly was the subject of an ESPN documentary, “The Dark Knight Returns.” A further tribute to his celebrity power was his recent appearance on Comedy Central’s “The Daily

Show,” hosted by rabid Mets fan Jon Stewart. The games where the pitcher has been scheduled to start have been described by many in the media as “Harvey Day,” as if it were a holiday for Mets fans. With the season one-third over, it’s safe to assess that Harvey has been fairly good, but clearly not as great as the hype. As NFL coach Bill Parcells famously said: “You are what your record says you are”; Harvey was 5-3 as May ended. Yes, like all Mets pitchers, he rarely gets solid offensive support, and has gotten no-decisions in games that he deserved to win. On the other hand, Harvey has given up ill-timed home runs, such as the threerun bomb in the Mets’ last homestand off the bat of Miami Marlins first baseman Justin Bohr. Harvey was perfect for the first three innings, but became rattled when Dee Gordon bunted for a base hit to lead off the fourth inning, then stole second base. The Pittsburgh Pirates lit up Harvey the previous week, and even the lowly Philadelphia Phillies have not cowered in the two games in which they have faced the Mets’ biggest star. It was classy of the New York Yankees to invite new Red Storm men’s basketball coach Chris Mullin to throw out a ceremonial first pitch. WFAN morning air personality Craig Carton claimed that the Mets asked St. John’s to purchase a large block of tickets in exchange for honoring Mullin, but a Mets executive told me that claim was blatantly untrue. A lot of SJU fans live here and would buy tickets without prompting; I believe the Mets in this case. Pedro Martinez has issued his autobiography, simply titled Pedro (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt). While he had assistance from co-writer Michael Silverman, this tome is clearly written in

Martinez doesn’t spend much time discussing his tenure with the Mets from 2005 through 2008, except to mention that relief pitchers Braden Looper and Roberto Hernandez blew a number of games that he should have won. Martinez also preferred when Ramon Castro was catching him instead of Mike Piazza, although he admits that he appreciated Mike’s ability to hit.
Yankees catching great Jorge Posada has also written his life story, The Journey Home (Dey Street). Posada writes a lot about his dad’s influence, as well as being part of the Yankees “Fab Five” of homegrown 90s talent that also included Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte, and Bernie Williams. He states that the 2001 World where the Yankees lost an emotional seven-game World Series to the Arizona Diamondbacks that occurred weeks after 9/11 still haunts him. On the down side, Posada writes very little about his strained relationship with manager Joe Girardi, and he gives short shrift as to why he asked out of the lineup just before a game in the latter part of the 2011 season. The mega-popular Long Island comic Jim Breuer was at Citi Field during the Mets’ last homestand, and he conceded that these days he is as well known for his YouTube videos that show off his devotion to the Mets as he is for his standup routines: “You can’t underestimate the power of social media,” he told me. “I have had folks coming to my shows in the Carolinas wearing Mets jerseys – and they’re not even baseball fans!” Last month’s Book Expo America (BEA) at The Javits Center is the publishing industry’s convention that promotes upcoming titles. Dr. Todd Sinett, a New York chiropractor, promoted 3 Weeks To A Better Back (East End Press). I asked Sinett, a Mets fan, about third baseman David Wright, who is suffering from spinal stenosis. “Spinal stenosis sounds scary, but I believe that it’s a BS diagnosis that is based on an MRI result,” said Sinett. “I have faith that Wright can overcome it with the right therapy.” He added that he would be glad to send the Mets captain a copy of his book. A Stanley Cup showdown between the Chicago Blackhawks and the New York Rangers would have been TV ratings gold for NBC Sports. SiriusXM NHL analyst Ashley Scharge believes that the fact that the Rangers had the best regular season record, earning them the President’s Cup and home ice throughout the playoffs, was actually a curse: “Only a half a dozen teams have won both the President’s Cup and then went on to win the Stanley Cup,” said Scharge.

While it wasn’t as revered as “The Sopranos,” nor did it ever achieve the media attention that “Sex And The City” did, there is little argument that “Entourage,” which ran from 2004 to 2011, was one of the most popular series in HBO history. The show dealt with four buddies from Queens who move to Los Angeles to seek fame and fortune in the entertainment industry. Vince Chase (Grenier) hits it big as a film star; his brother, Johnny, (Dillon), is a bit of a lummox who picks up odd acting jobs here and there; Eric Murphy (Connolly) serves as Vince’s manager; and Turtle (Ferrara) ends up as Vince’s driver and overall Guy Friday. Offering his guidance to the guys was agent Ari Gold (Piven), the ultimate Hollywood insider who can one minute be extremely charming and the next turn into a cussing stevedore. Given its popularity, “Entourage” was a no-brainer to be made into a film. The movie opens with Gold now being in charge of a major film studio. He calls Vince to tell him that he wants him to star in a new film, an update of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” to be dubbed “Hyde.” Vince insists not only
on starring in it but directing it – even though he has no experience. Against his better judgment, Ari gives Vince his approval. Not surprisingly, the film goes over budget, and Vince needs another $15 million to complete it. An anguished Ari is still supportive, but he has to seek the approval of the studio’s chief benefactor, oil and cattle baron Larsen McCredle (Billy Bob Thornton), who is too busy to go to Hollywood and instead sends his slacker son, Travis (Haley Joel Osment with a ridiculously exaggerated Texas twang) to be his eyes and ears in

Growing up, many of us had a friend who was funny as hell – but also was a person who'd rank you out, call you every name in the book, and insult you in front of everybody – and somehow, you'd end up calling him your best buddy. Which brings us to Jeff Ross, the Comedy Central star and standup comic who can do the impossible: He'll burn your ears with insults, but at the end of the night you'll love him for it. You can take that literally: “Jeff Ross Roasts Westbury,” which headlines The NYCB Theatre At Westbury on June 25, will be a comedy show with a truly cutting edge (Tickets: LiveNation.com). “I want to bring it to the people,” said Ross. “I like the idea of my show being interactive with the audience. So, I'm going to bring up volunteers from the audience and roast them – speed roast them. It's going to be great. My accountant's going to be there, maybe he'll come on stage, or

It's going to be awesome, and who knows what can happen.” Ross' nickname is “The Roastmaster General,” earned for not only his years as an officer and roastmaster at the legendary Friars Club in New York City, but also for his hurling of lethal barbs on Comedy Central's roasts of stars such as William Shatner, Joan Rivers, and Justin Bieber. It's a fine line that Ross constantly walks, but it's a style that comedy fans obviously enjoy.
deciding whether to invest more funds into the film or to pull the plug. There are other, minor plots: Johnny Drama gets in trouble with his cell phone as he engages in video sexting with a woman who is married to a very jealous and threatening guy; Eric is still trying to win over the heart of his pregnant ex, Sloan (Emmanuelle Chriqui); and Turtle has a crush on MMA fighter Ronda Rousey who, as can only happen in a movie, takes a liking to him. This is not a great film by any means, but it moves fast and entertains. Piven is the key reason to watch, as he gives his character more gusto than ever; his best line is when he addresses why men will forever envy film’s leading men: “Let’s face it. These guys get to have sex with women that only civilians can dream about. That’s why they’re movie stars!” There are a ton of cameo appearances (Mark Cuban, Warren Buffett, Baron Davis, Tom Brady, and Rob Gronkowski); countless actors show up in nearly every frame. The problem with this celebrity watching is that you are better off watching this film on DVD, where you can stop scenes and replay others.
“Making fun of somebody and having them laugh at themselves, and still like you, it's powerful,” said Ross. “It's intense sometimes, and maybe not many people can get away with it. But it's a great life, I love it. I'm really happy with where I've ended up.” Not as happy in that regard are the inmates at Brazos County Jail in Texas, which is the most unlikely place a comedy show has ever been filmed. Currently running on Comedy Central is the new Ross special “Jeffrey Ross Roasts Criminals: Live From Brazos County Jail,” which
turns out to be as moving, if not downright touching, as it is uproarious. “I wanted to do the most provocative, dangerous roast I could,” said Ross. “I thought if I brought inmates on the stage – who are in for serious crimes – and make fun of them and see if they could laugh at themselves it would be a good social experiment. Once I started, I became sympathetic to a lot of the people there; nobody should be forgotten. But it's really funny, and I can't wait for people to see it.” In all, Ross embodies a style that is totally unique: He's got the pacing of a classic one-liner comic such as Henny Youngman, but is as contemporary and daring as any of comedy's new breed of risk takers. Ross admits he owes a tip of the cap to those who came before him. “I really try to be original, but yet I still try to honor the guys who came before me,” said Ross, who as a Friar rubs shoulders with generations of standups. “This is where my influences are. It's not that I watch these guys, but it's that I feel we are from the same breed of person. Sometimes I think that maybe I was born in the wrong decade, but that's okay – I love all those old-school guys … I love being a Friar. It's like a living comedy party. You can play cards, get something to eat, get a massage, and talk with other miserable comedians as they come home from the road.” That comedy road can be a long and bumpy one, but Ross is constantly bringing his fans new concepts and shows. His A-list status is an achievement that this seemingly humble star seems to appreciate. “I don't think I could have envisioned this life,” admitted Ross. “It's been a strange journey, and it's as weird as it gets – making fun of people for a living. I love it, I really do. I can't complain about the road at all.”

Car Showcase Opens In Oyster Bay
Collector Car Showcase (collectorcs.com), the museum and showcase devoted to automotive memorabilia, Petroliana, and vintage cars in Oyster Bay, is exhibiting “Century Of Speed – 100 Years of Racing and Competition Cars," which debuted on June 6. This celebration will be on display through July at the 18,000-square-foot facility, located at 85 Pine Hollow Road. Having previously been a YouTube sensation with more than 16 million views, Rose has gone on to perform live with such national artists as Todrick Hall, Coco Jones, IM5Band, The Sugar Hill Gang, and Aaron Carter. The World’s Greatest Tribute Band?

Thump thump ... thump thump ... The faint sounds of a heartbeat were the first sounds heard as Brit Floyd began to perform “Speak To Me.” Brit Floyd, billed as the
“world’s greatest Pink Floyd tribute show,” had touched down in Huntington for its “Space And Time World Tour,” and the assembled Pink Floyd fans seemed ready to take the ride. This psychedelic blast from the past brought all the bells and whistles for the fans, from visual affects, pyramid lighting, original Pink Floyd art and animation, and, of course, fog; this was a time
machine into Pink Floyd’s greatest moments. “Time” and “The Great Gig In the Sky” were seamless, “Another Brick in the Wall Part 2” and “Sheep” seemed to have fans mesmerized by heavy bass as well as backup singers that poured their hearts out. “Wish You Were Here” and “Comfortably Numb” showed the band at its best, nailing the intricate guitar solos. Indeed, this truly seemed to be the greatest Pink Floyd tribute show during these moments. The encore started off with “The Show Must Go On,” where the Pink Floyd animation from The Wall made its mark – the eerie and ominous art synched well with the theatrical lyrics and stage props that they created another feeling: honor. Brit Floyd not only paid tribute to Floyd, but also honored them. By doing so, a tribute band proved they were true artists, not just musicians.
Jane’s Addiction • The Paramount • Huntington
It’s been nearly 27 years since Jane’s Addiction released the album Nothing’s Shocking and gave the the world its first taste of what soon would be dubbed alternative rock. For the anniversary of the landmark album, the band is playing it in its entirety on its current tour. As Jane took the stage at The Paramount, the crowd began to roar with excitement. As happens at many rock events, it was nearing 10 pm and scuttlebutt had it that the band’s tour bus was late – but much to the crowd’s surprise, the band showed up on the stage ready to go. Opening with “Up The Beach,” the first track from Nothing’s Shocking, the band ignited the stage with its still-raw alternative sound. Frontman Perry Farrell is one of the last remaining rock & roll stars left; from alcohol-induced breaks, karate kicks, and chants to the crowd, Farrell brings an authentic energy to the stage with seemingly every performnace. Standards such as “Mountain Song” and “Idiots Rule” semed to lift the crowd off their feet and towards the stage. Lead guitarist Dave Navarro, who went on to other projects equally as big, simply shredded with a look of ease for the entire show, appearing to never break as much as a mild sweat. Staying out of the main
stage light for most of the show, Navarro even sat on a throne-like chair for the fan favorite “Jane Says.” Drummer Stephen Perkins and bassist Chris Chaney vibrated the intimate Paramount note for note from start to finish. The band even threw in “Been Caught Stealing,” a fan favorite not included the Nothing’s Shocking album. Although a shorter set than usual, the last
few songs were accompanied by four women – two in black leather outfits, who walked around the stage as the other two hung by pierced rings attached to their backs, swinging from the rafters. In all, this show was a rarity. Seeing and hearing Nothing’s Shocking performed in its entirety is not something fans should expect to see again – especially with a burlesque-like ending that proved that Jane's Addiction can still shock its fans after all these years.

Who: Devi (pronounced “Davey”) continues to be one of the east coast’s best kept-secrets: A soulful, sexy, rock/blues/jamband fronted by singer/ guitarist Debra Devi featuring Max Feinstein on bass, John Hummel on drums, Peter Vitalone on keys and John Roccesano on percussion. Two years back, the band's debut album, Get Free (True Nature Records/Redeye USA), earned a wealth of praise – including similar plaudits from this publication. The album was a mix of heavy rock, blues-tinged slower tunes, and wellchosen covers. The Debra album took hold in a Devi big day: Guitarist Debra Devi was invited to become a Fender Girl Rock Nation artist, as well as the first female guitarist to record for Guitar World’s “Lick of the Day” iPhone app. The band currently is mixing a new EP, Every Story Has a Song. An advance single, “Butterfly,” has already been released; learn more abut it at devirock.com. Devi also recently released a new live video, “Tired Of Waiting,” on YouTube. Debra Devi is also the author of the award-winning blues glossary, The Language Of The Blues, which features a foreword by Dr. John and words from other famous musicians. induction, seems to be headed in a “rock” direction, which could be interesting. Jett neglected to mention her biggest musical influence, Gary Glitter, a wise thing what with his legal misadventures – but she did give a lot of proper shoutouts, including all her current and former band mates. Lou Reed, who had already entered the Hall via The Velvet Underground, got a solo induction, also well deserved, and received a heartfelt tribute delivered by Patti Smith. Having seen her speech on YouTube, I was troubled by the fact that Smith's references to The Velvet Underground and Max's Kansas City were edited out of the HBO broadcast – but The Velvets and Max's never get respect; this should not stun and surprise me, but it does. Lou's other half, Laurie Andersen, talked about Reed as a person, and poked a hole into the “character,” which some of us had the opportunity to experience; the Bowie MainMan connection appeared for a fleeting moment. Overall, not a bad tribute to Lou.

Bill Withers, who made amazing records, was honored with performances by John Legend and Stevie Wonder, but sat out, while no mention was made as to why. I assume that the pipes aren't there anymore, but he had some powerful pipes to match the powerful songs that I sang along to on 77 WABC in my car in the 1970s, a great time for Top 40 (except for Top 40's refusal to play glam/ glitter and punk). I also got turned onto The Five Royales, a roots R&B group who did the original versions of what I thought were new hits when they were recorded by The Shirelles, James Brown, and other artists. I was thrilled to learn something new, seeing as how I always think I know everything. There was much more: The blues crowd was mollified by the induction of Paul Butterfield. Already a member of the Hall via The Beatles, Ringo Starr was inducted as a solo artist. I always loved Ringo, but in the 70s when he aligned himself with Marc Bolan and T.Rex and made the documentary film about T.Rex, Born To Boogie, I was beaming. Ringo sent Cherry Vanilla to the Dakota as a birthday present performer for John Lennon in the early 70s – how cool is that? Cherry still has the half-full bottle of wine that Lennon gave her. Ringo had a great string of those aforementioned 77 WABC hit singles in the 70s, and thereby earned his induction. The same is true for Green Day, who made punk hip in the 90s, thereby turning kids on to The Clash, The Ramones, and other punk artists, which might not have ever happened otherwise. It was a well-balanced ceremony, but I'm still pissed that The New York Dolls, The Marvelettes, and T.Rex aren’t in.
