Marvel's The Avengers: Age Of Ultron

Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, James Spader, Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Cobie Smulders, Don Cheadle, Julie Delpy Directed and written by Joss Whedon Walt Disney Pictures

There are some who consider this sequel to the Marvel’s The Avengers blockbuster from two years back to be a “box office disappointment” – as if having the second-biggest opening of all time at a reported $188.7 million is something to sneeze at. The “problem” is that the first Avengers film had the greatest opening weekend ever, and in this money-means-everything world, second is as good as last place. What kind of a jaded, misguided, whacked world are we living in, anyway? In Hollywood, the perception is that if it didn’t rake in more cash, it’s not as good. However, this time, the perception is kinda, sorta right: This new superhero epic throws everything but the kitchen sink at viewers, is perfectly cast, and the action never stops from the first frame to the last ... yet, somehow, some way, it’s not nearly as enertaining as the original Avengers film. Frankly, the problem with this sequel – the unnofficial first film of the 2015 summer blockbuster season – is that there’s too much too much, if that’s a thing. There’s more jokes, more

That’s too much too much, in our eyes; by the end of the movie, our brains were jarred and our senses numbed. Even the incredible robot villian Ultron (voiced by James Spader, a worthy choice of actor who plays creeps better than anyone), seems over the top; it seems utterly unstoppable, and its actions are so reprehensible that there’s no room to breathe when he’s in control; audiences must feel as if the entire universe will crack in half during this noisy soup-to-nuts fantasy film.

Night Special,” “That Smell,” “Gimme Three Steps,” “What’s Your Name,” and “Simple Man.” In a tragic tale often told, the Skynyrd story could have ended in a Mississippi swamp with the 1977 plane crash that killed three band members, including Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines. However, the hopped-up on Everlasting Gobstoppers tween crowds that this type of action film attracts probably want all the BAM! BOOM! ZAP! ARRGGGHH! they can get, so we haven’t heard many complaints. And the casting, as always, is stellar, with Chris Hemsworth really growing into his role as Thor, and Robert Downey Jr. the perfect Tony Stark (Iron Man). Our only complaint is that whenever The Hulk appears, it still looks like a cartoon standing next to real, live people. Let’s face it – Hulk will never be done properly; even the 1966 Grantray-Lawrence-produced cartoon show version was more believable. Your kids are going to make you go, so dump off the left side of your brain at the box office, enjoy that big tub o’ buttered, and gaze at Scarlett Johanssen in the best costume she’s ever worn – and if you’re a female, we’re sure that Hemsworth, Renner (Green Arrow), and Evans (Captain America) will make your heart flutter every bit as much.

For the passionate, longtime fans of the band, the album finds Skynyrd back at the top of its game; the disc re-ignites the in-studio alchemy the band found with producer Bob Marlette, and the sound is traditional Skynyrd with the edge of immediacy – rock ‘n roll for the times. What is most disconcerting for Brooklyn Nets fans following their team’s expected ouster in the first round of the 2015 NBA playoffs at the hands of the Atlanta Hawks is that the future of the squad appears quite bleak. They don’t have a quality first-round pick for the foreseeable future thanks to some ill-advised trades by general manager Billy King. Adding to the misery is that King’s two prized centerpieces, forward Joe Johnson and point guard Deron Williams, appear to be over the hill. Center Mason Plumlee is the NBA’s version of “The Emperor’s New Clothes;” the Nets made him a centerpiece of their marketing campaigns this year, as well as their franchise face for the 2015 All-Star Game activities that took place in New York. Plumlee has no offensive skills and his defense isn’t much better. Whenever he is asked to spell Brook Lopez, the Nets stop scoring while the other

team runs off one bucket after another. The New York Islanders gave it their all this season, but it was obvious that they were fatigued the last two months of the regular season and then ran out of gas at the most inopportune time as far as playoff seeding went. They possibly would have made it to the second round of the NHL playoffs had they been able to finish ahead of the Washington Capitals and thus have had home ice for a Game 7, instead of losing by a third period goal at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC. Losing Kyle Okposo for two months to an eye injury in January was definitely a momentum changer for the Isles. It would have been nice to extend the life of the original Nassau Coliseum a little longer, but it wasn’t meant to be. Perceptive Mark Herrmann of New York Newsday penned a column a couple weeks ago recalling when the then-New York Nets of the American Basketball Association called the Nassau Coliseum home before departing for New Jersey in 1977; it’s easy to wonder whether the Coliseum would have fallen into disrepair as quickly as it did had the Nets stayed. My guess is not only would the building have been maintained far better, but there would have been better mass transit, including a monorail link to the Hempstead LIRR station According to NFL draft experts, the New York Jets got a steal when the team selected USC defensive end Leonard Williams with the sixth pick in the first round. Hopefully, things will

turn out better for the Jets compared with 2008, when they last had the sixth pick in the first round and selected defensive end Vernon Gholston, who turned out to be a bust. The Jets

Bill Goldberg also drafted highly regarded Baylor QB Bryce Petty in the fourth round. My first reaction was that this guy’s name sounds more like a 70s adult film star than an NFL signal caller. Now that the mega-hyped Manny Pacquiao versus Floyd Mayweather fight is behind us, the next big boxing event will take place May 29

Scroggins defeated PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber in the championship match, 247-195, to win his second PBA50 Tour title in three tournaments. “It’s hard to believe being here after what I’ve been through the past year,” said Scroggins, who is coming back from a nearly year-long layoff from competition because of a foot ailment. “It’s been a long road back but I can honestly say this is the best I’ve felt in about two years. “If anyone would have told me a year ago I’d be standing here with two titles, I’d say no way,” the eight-time PBA Tour winner added. “It’s fun to be on top again.” Weber was trying for his fourth PBA50 Tour title. when Huntington’s Chris Algieri takes on Great Britain’s Amir Khan. This could be a careerdefining fight for Algieri, who barely got by Ruslan Provodikov in his last fight in Brooklyn (many thought he was lucky to receive that split decision). Algieri got pummeled by Pacquiao in 2014, and my guess is that he should finally get serious about going to medical school if he loses to Khan, certainly no slouch in the ring. Citi Field will have bring professional wrestling to its infield on Sunday, June 7, as the stadium will host “The Legends of Wrestling.”

Among the big names who will be taking part are Bill Goldberg, Bret Hart, and “Nature Boy” Ric Flair; a new breed of young stars will compete. It was clear that the New York Mets’ magic would end once the team played in Yankee Stadium in late April – and sure enough, it dropped two out of three games in the first installment of the “Subway Series.” The Mets followed that up by losing two out of three to the Marlins in Miami; next up were the Washington Nationals, who have kicked sand in the Mets’ faces for years and took three out of four games from our Flushing heroes at Citi Field, including back-to-back games by a 1-0 score. Someone has to remind the Mets that they are playing baseball and not soccer. Mets fans should enjoy reading Michael Garry’s Game Of My Life: Mets (Sports Publishing); the author interviewed current Mets David Wright, Daniel Murphy, Travis d’Arnaud, and Jon Niese as well as former “Amazin’s” Todd Pratt, Felix Millan, Ed Kranepool, Eric Hillman, and Ed Charles, among others, about the best games of their careers while wearing a Mets uniform. The New York Yankees were supposed to be also-rans this season, but someone forgot to give manager Joe Girardi and GM Brian Cashman the memo: Brett Gardner and Jacoby Ellsbury seem to never make outs, while Alex Rodriguez appears to have been rejuvenated thanks to the sabbatical imposed on him by Major League Baseball.

Photos:

Mark Teixeira still barely hits above .200, but he always seems to hit a home run when the Yankees need it most (as Mets fans will attest). Andrew Miller and Dellin Betances have done such a good job in relief that you couldn’t blame Yankees fans if they have already forgotten about Mariano What’s-His-Name.

Dave Clive's Nawlins Funk Band Tremé, Islip May 22 at 8 PM • treme.com (631) 277-2008

One of the most accomplished drummers in the area scene, Dave Clive has performed and/or recorded with Iguazu, The Impalas, Paquito D’Rivera, Slide Hampton, Hawaiian Express, Neil Diamond, Sound Of Infinity, Robert Charels, The Blues Club, and more artists than we can list here – but he's best known for his soulful Nawlins Funk, as authentic a New Orleans sound as you can get north of the Mason-Dixon Line.

14 • Good Times Magazine - May 19 - June 1, 2015

It's a special Thursday night event as Mul's, Long Island’s sudden new haven for country music, presents yet another superstar in Niemann, a newcomer to the scene who has alredy scored such national hits as “Lover, Lover” (a #1 smash) and “What Do You Want.” Niemann,, a soulful tunesmith, has also written songs for and with such artists as Garth Brooks, Blake Shelton, and Lee Brice.

X-Session

K.J. Farrell's, Bellmore May 30 at 7 PM kjfarrells.com (516) 804-9925

X-Session is one of the area's longest-lasting cover bands, with more than 800 shows to its credit throughout the region, an incredible achievement. Longtime members of this famous group – one that features a rootsy set list that runs the gamut from The Beatles to The Eagles to Crosby Stills & Nash – include Jim Del, Eddie Profet Jr., Pat Montefusco, and Matt Schilling. And that’s not all on this Saturday night: The 90s Band, a relative newcomer to the area cover/tribute band scene, takes over the Farrell’s stage at 10 pm.

he Bogmen – one of a small handful of Long Island rock acts to become national recording and touring artists during the mid-1990s – return to the stage for a homecoming show of sorts on Saturday, May 23 at 8 pm at The Paramount in Huntington. Doors open at 7 pm; the popular “Founder’s Room” after-party applies for this event. For tickets and information log on to paramountny.com or ticketmaster.com. For the few area fans that may not know: The Bogmen are an indie rock band based in Huntington, the same town as The Paramount. The group was formed in 1993 by Billy Campion, Bill Ryan, Brendan Ryan, Mark Wike, P.J. O’Connor, and Clive Tucker. Campion met Bill and Brendan Ryan in the late 1970s. Sharing a passion for music, they started a new band, The Plummers. During college, the group picked up bassist Mark Wike, drummer Clive Tucker, and percussionist P. J. O’Connor. With this lineup, the band called itself The Bogmen, in honor of what Campion called its “tribal, huntish” sound. In 1995, after playing at “every bar, club, and retirement home in the tri-state area,” according to the group, this talented, unique band from Long Island was signed to Arista Records, and eventually released its first album, Life Begins at 40 Million, which was produced by Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads.

The Bogmen are also fondly remembered for their albums Closed Captioned Radio and Yellar, as well as their most recent EP, Lookin' For Heaven In the Barrio, which was part of the group's frequent comebacks a few years ago. Also popular is their live concert DVD that was shot at Irving Plaza in New York City, which shows the band at its in-performance best. A music video of The Bogmen performing one of its most requested songs, “Suddenly,” has been a favorite at Vevo and YouTube for years. “Mexico” is another one of the band's most famous tunes, and a perfect example of what made this Long Islandbased band so different – they could rock, for sure, but their story songs of lost loves and life's other constant trevails made them much different from the big-hair bombast of their original timeframe. Also at The Paramount: The return of Jane’s Addiction (May 18); Steel Panther (May 19) and the new/old rock supergroup the Empty Hearts (May 28).

Could it be? It is finally getting near beach weather in these parts? Our pal Veronica, the queen of H&M's swimsuit section, is ready; we just picked up the biggest cooler we could find (one with a radio built right in!); the team recently invested in a huge new umbrella and sunscreen. While we point our cars toward the shore, here's something that's always hot: The latest news about area recording studios and

Rising superstar Jason Isbell – with special guest Craig Finn – headlines on Tuesday, May 19 at 8 pm at The Space At Westbury. Tickets and information: ticketmaster.com and thespaceatwestbury.com. Isbell is both a product of his Northern Alabama roots and an example of how musical influences can help an artist evolve and mature. Born in Greenhill, Alabama, Isbell is undeniably inspired by the soultinged rock, country, and blues produced in neighboring Muscle Shoals. His sound continues to evolve, but is equal parts loud and thoughtful, Southern and worldly. As a lyricist, Isbell is willing to tell the difficult stories, whether raw, introspective, messy, or poetic. As an artist, he reveals his own vulnerabilities – his successes and failures – that listeners might find kinship, or perspective. Get The Led Out

A Gifted Songsmith’s Rise

A Long Island music artist, 29-yearold Jeff LeBlanc’s just-released new album, Vision (now available wherever music is sold), looks to distinguish him from a crowded field of singer/ songwriters. Somewhat R&B and somewhat soulful, the record elevates his signature blend of smooth pop to a higher level – all the while tackling sounds and topics he had yet to explore in his previous efforts. “I really challenged myself on this record,” said LeBlanc. “I went into the studio each and every day, focused to create something deeper than I ever had before.” The core of the record was tracked in Nashville’s legendary Sound Emporium studios, and the results are evident. In the track “Stumbled,” LeBlanc shares the blunders of re-entering the dating scene and the heartbreak of falling for someone too fast – all set to a light-hearted, infectious groove. “Say Anything You Want” is a response to all those in your life who criticize or doubt you; with a boastful almost arrogant tone, the song drives home the message that no one has the right to put you down. “Why Do I Worry” is one of LeBlanc’s most lyrically personal songs to date. “Sometimes I waste my days just thinking,” he said. “We all worry about the things that we can’t control.” The new album is the work of an artist who, through self-evaluation, has given us a snapshot into his soul. he songs have a mature perspective on many issues that young adults face, as well as those who have a few more years in their pocket. “I hope that the listeners can see themselves in my experiences” LeBlanc said, “yet find their own interpretation on how the words relate to them.” LeBlanc graduated from Sacred Heart University, earned a history degree, and imagined his destiny would likely be as a middle-school teacher. However, LeBlanc’s discovery of songwriting led him down a different path. Since releasing his first EP, Signals in 2009, he has epitomized success as an independent artist – netting two Top 10 albums on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter chart (2011’s Worth Holding On To and 2013’s My Own Way There), scoring dozens of television placements, achieving both satellite and commercial radio play, selling-out headline shows, and touring the country with a wide range of acts such as Gavin DeGraw, Colbie Caillat, Brett Dennen, Ingrid Michaelson, Parachute, Chris Isaak, Joan Osborne, and other artists. Find Jeff LeBlanc at Twitter, Facebook. Instagram, and YouTube, as well as jefflablancmusic.com.

Get The Led Out is a group of professional musicians who are passionate about their love of the music of the British hard rock legend Led Zeppelin. It’s been their mission to bring the studio recordings of the original group to life on the big concert stage. This is not an impersonator act, but rather a group of musicians who were fans first, striving to do justice to one of the greatest bands in rock history. From the bombastic and epic to the folky and mystical, Get The Led Out (GTLO) has captured the essence of the recorded music of Led Zeppelin and brought it to the concert stage. The Philadelphia-based group consists of six veteran musicians; utilizing the multiinstrumentalists at their disposal, GTLO recreate the songs in all their depth and glory with the studio overdubs that Zeppelin themselves never performed. When you hear three guitars on the album, GTLO delivers three guitarists on stage. There are no wigs or fake English accents (similar to the Beatles tribute the Fab Faux, which also recently performed The Space), GTLO brings a high energy Zeppelin concert with an honest, heartthumping intensity. Dubbed by some members of the media as “The American Led Zeppelin,” Get The Led Out offers a strong focus on the early years of the original band. The tribute also touched on the deeper cuts that were seldom, if ever, heard in concert (see the set list they post on Facebook). GTLO also include an acoustic featuring Zep favorites such as “Tangerine”

Best Buy Theater, HOB Boston, Fillmore Charlotte, and Ram’s Head Live Baltimore. Performing arts centers where the band has performed include The Sovereign Performing Arts Center, The Count Basie Theater, The Filene Center at Wolf Trap, The Kravis Center, The Durham Performing Arts Center, The Lynn Memorial Theater, The Palace in Greensburg and too many more than we can list in this space. The band will make their first appearance at the Red Rocks Amphetheatre in Denver this fall as well. Get The Led Out’s approach to

their performance of this hallowed catalog is not unlike a classical performance. “Led Zeppelin are sort of the classical composers of the rock era,” sayid lead vocalist Paul Sinclair. “I believe 100 years from now they will be looked at as the Bach or Beethoven of our time. As cliché as it sounds, their music is timeless.” A Get The Led Out concert mimics the “light and shade” that are the embodiment of “The Mighty Zep.” Group members include Sinclair, Paul Hammond (guitars), Jimmy Marchiano (guitars), Billy Childs (bass), Andrew Lipke (keyboards), and Adam Ferraioli (drums). Learn more about the band at gtlorocks.com.

RHYTHM TRACKING Mighty Marvel: Comic book movies and TV shows are the new rock & roll. I have from time to time looked in on the current worlds of Marvel and DC; the new breed of kids wear T-shirts and merchandise featuring

their superhero favorites as they once did for rock bands, and the world keeps turning. Marvel's The Avengers: Age Of Ultron" is a monster hit; Ant Man will be the center of the universe this summer; and a much-needed re-boot of The Fantastic Four will appear during the height of beach season. Of course, the films' original soundtrack albums, on CD or digital download, are must-haves for real comics fans. Television as well has been invaded, with “The Flash” and a Batman-less “Gotham” delivering good ratings. “Arrow” and “Agents Of SHIELD” continue to hold their own, and coming next season are a “Supergirl” show and a new CW team-up show starring the already introduced revamp of “The Atom.” If you're not on board with all of this, what are you waiting for? Both Marvel and DC have blockbuster superhero films scheduled right into the year 2020, indicating their confidence that this trend won't be ending anytime soon. For a 1960s teen who owned the

first issues of all the projects now hitting the international market, I couldn't be more excited. The Divas Roll On In Vegas: The pop world has morphed into one long Vegas-styled production line; if only the hippies had any idea what the future held. As an early 70s pioneer glitter/glam fan, I knew that sparkle would win out over mud, and catchy tunes would always triumph over hour-long drum solos, and I've been proven right. Just as legend Diana Ross wraps up a stay on the Vegas strip, Mariah Carey joins Britney Spears as regulars for the non-stop flow of tourist customers who flock to see pop stars after they've gambled all their money away. The ''show biz glitz”world that I've been predicting is now the reality of rock & roll, even though actual rock stars are not part of the deal. In the end, fun, silly, universal pop songs always come out on top, along with the stars who sing them. Place your bets? Sam & Chris: Everyone, famous or not, has their troubles. Sam Smith, whose amazing voice won him numerous awards this past year, is reportedly having multiple surgeries on his apparently overtaxed vocal chords – a true danger of the trade, and we wish him well. 50 Million Plays – No Label

Isaac Shepard:

Isaac Shepard, a California-based indie solo pianist, recently passed 50,000,000 plays on Pandora Internet Radio. As an independent artist, this milestone was accomplished without having the backing of a record label.

Photo: Kelsea Ballerini by Jeremy Ryan

His contemporary piano music was first introduced to Pandora listeners in 2009, and the streams have steadily increased over the years. "I'm truly honored, and I want to give a huge thanks to my fans for their wonderful support," said Shepard. "Whether it's at work, at dinner, on a hike, or even trying to fall asleep, there is something universally peaceful about listening to this type of piano music. People crave peace for good reason, and I'm humbled that they choose my music to help them find some peace in their lives." Shepard's easy-listening piano music is often played on Pandora's personalized radio stations with similar artists such as Jim Brickman, George Winston, David Lanz, and Yiruma. Shepard's profile on Pandora can be viewed at www.pandora.com/isaac-shepard.

Veteran country superstar Dwight Yoakam scored a #2 debut on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart with Second Hand Heart, his

highest-charting album in 26 years – since 1988's classic disc Buenas Noches From A Lonely Room hit #1 on the chart. At press time, Second Hand Heart ranked at #7 on the Top Current Albums chart, and #18 on the Top 200 Albums chart, resulting in Yoakam’s best sales week since 1998. The twotime Grammy Award winner Isaac presented the Best Shepard New Artist at the ACM awards in April, and performed a new song, "Liar," on NBC's “Late Night With Seth Meyers.” Yoakam also performed with Sam Hunt as part of the ACM Awards' Superstar Duets, which aired this past Friday (May 15) on CBS.

Double Dose Of Hot EDM

Duelle:

Duelle

Since they came onto the EDM scene last year with a string of releases, Miami-based sister duo Danielle and Gabrielle Verderese – aka Duelle – have become a force to be reckoned with in the genre. Tweaking their own production skills, the sisters were inspired by artists like Odesza, Zhu, and Oliver Heldens on their newest single, "Ice," which marks their first foray from the bass scene into the not-so-distant world of house. The multicultural backdrop of living in Miami has had an influence on the duo. The sisters draw their inspiration from a combination of Britney Spears’ dance moves, the theatrical elegance of Lady Gaga, and the rap stylings of Nicki Minaj, which they fuse into their own pop and hip hop informed take on the world of EDM. Duelle’s vocal style varies from euphoriainducing melodies to fiery rap skills, and their performances feature live vocals mixed with DJing. Not too far on the horizon, Duelle will also introduce and incorporate their extensive background in classical dance to the stage. Learn more at duellemusic.com.

Featuring the Top 15 smash "Love Me Like You Mean It," The First Time contains 12 original songs, each written or cowritten by Ballerini. Now part of the current CMT “Next Women of Country” tour, Ballerinia is living up to the title as “Love Me Like You Mean It” continues its climb towards Top 10, and has landed her on several “ones to watch” lists for 2015 including Billboard, Country Weekly, The Huffington Post, CBS Local’s Radio.com, Spotify, #CMChat, Country Music Is Love, and more.
