KEEPING IT GOING

Zebra isn’t the only Long Islandbased music act enjoying a lengthy career and still drawing legions of fans to their concerts. Here are other veteran area acts that certainly have enjoyed their fair share of staying power: Kerry Kearney: The gifted guitarist plays more area shows than you’ve had hot dinners, ranging from the biggest theaters in the area to the music bar around the corner. Twisted Sister: Every year, they show up for their annual Christmas-season concerts – and every year, they not only sell the venues out but also bring the houses down in the process. Dee Snider remains our pick as coolest guy in Long Island. Barnaby Bye: We’d love to know the fountain of youth they collectively have found, because these 70s favorites somehow look younger and sound better than ever ... and keep selling out their local shows. Brian Setzer: The ultimate hometown boy made good (he’s from Massapequa), Setzer’s annual holiday concerts are an annual tradition, but he’s much more than that these days: His new album, May be his best recording of a career that started with The Stray Cats and shows no signs of slowing down.

The Weight is, from some accounts, a tribute to The Band – but this is clearly no cover band lineup: The group features the legendary Jim Weider and Randy Ciarlante from The Band, Brian Mitchell and Byron Isaacs of The Levon Helm Band, and Marty Grebb, who worked with both Rick Danko and Richard Manuel of The Band. This amazing all-star lineup is a roots music fan's dream, and easily a best bet for this edition.

Jackson, still a major force in music both on his own and with his legendary trio. “We have also been fortunate enough to have stayed together all this time, with most of the credit for that due to the loyalty of our fans. Furious 7

Starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Dwayne Johnson, Tyrese Gibson, Jordana Brewster, Ludacris, Jason Statham, Lucas Black, Kurt Russell Directed by James Wan Universal

This particular action film was a hard one to criticize. As star Paul Walker was killed in a tragic 2013 automobile accident, it was a brave move on the part of all involved to continue on with the making and release of Furious 7, the new installment of the mega-popular Fast & Furious series. Against a whole array of odds, Furious 7 turns out to be bright and exciting entertainment as well as a fitting send-off to both the series and to the immesely charismatic Walker. To be fair, the F&F series will never go down in cinema history as any sort of classic fare; the entire franchise has been predicated on a simple forumla: Buff bods and chiseled features from the leads, who invariously will drive the most amazing automobiles ever seen on film – but we have to admit that a screen filled with hunks and babes in every frame isn’t the hardest thing to warm up to. Diesel, who usually displays all the range of a hood

ornament, actually delivers what probably will be rememebered as the best performance of his career here – as does Rodriguez, who could have ended up a simple “scream queen” but instead has fashioned herself into every action film fan’s favorite heroine. And every comic book plot needs big-time heroes and heroines, even when the doings are dumb: Deckard Shaw (Statham), the brother of the crew's slain enemy Owen Shaw, has vowed to wipe out our team of heroes as revenge for his brother’s death.

There’s terrorists who have stolen a secret surveillance program, and its creator needs to be saved. Add in a bunch of governmental intrigue, and our coterie of film stars will run to the rescue. However, nobody who is a fan of this series will care, as anyone who buys a ticket to Furious 7 is there to watch a red sports car fly through the air and crash into a skyscraper, just like in the commercials. Amazingly, Walker’s role runs seamlessly, a fitne finale, indeed. Just pass the large buttered and have fun.

By Lloyd Carroll been added to that infamous list. Wheeler complained of discomfort last year, but medical tests, including an MRI, did not reveal structural damage. The Mets were hoping that off-season rest might be a cure, but unfortunately the pain was even worse after throwing in Port St. Lucie during early spring training. A follow-up MRI revealed a tear in his ulnar collateral ligament in his right arm. That well-known baseball medical procedure, “Tommy John surgery,” is once again necessary. Frustrated fans began pointing fingers at Mets management, as if its were responsible for Wheeler’s predicament. Zach’s own agent, B.B. Abbott, quickly absolved them of any blame. Not to be disrespectful to Wheeler’s talent, but “the sky is falling” reaction among many Mets fans is not warranted based on what the pitcher has done in his first two seasons with the team. Yes, there was a lot of hype about him when Mets general manager Sandy Alderson acquired him from the San Francisco Giants for soon-to-be free agent centerfielder Carlos Beltran. While he has shown nasty stuff to hitters, Wheeler has frequently had control issues, and his lifetime record is a rather pedestrian 18-16. The games that he pitched in often were interminable because he seemed to go to a full count with every opposing batter. Frankly, Mets aficionados should be more concerned about the team’s bullpen. Closer Bobby Parnell missed most of last season recovering from arm surgery; so far he has not shown any signs of rust, but he’s a long way from contributing. Vic Black, who did a terrific job getting the Mets out of many jams last year, is now battling tendinitis. The book is a serviceable recap of the last four years at Citi Field, though Kettmann acts more like Alderson’s flak than he does as an impartial journalist. He praises Alderson for not re-signing shortstop Jose Reyes in 2011 because of concerns about Reyes’ Zack Wheeler legs and his durability. We’ll never know if center Chris Obepka could have turned the tide, but his absence was a key reason that the offensively-challenged San Diego State Aztecs were able to score 76 points and beat the St. John’s Red Storm by a dozen points to quickly knock the Johnnies out of the NCAA

I wonder if Obepka would have been suspended if he were a member of the University of Colorado basket ball team, since cannabis consumption is legal in that state. Former New York Knicks star and longtime basketball television analyst Greg Anthony was removed from March Madness telecasts by CBS after being arrested on a solicitation charge in Washington, DC. The District of Columbia DA’s office did not bother to prosecute, and Anthony agreed to perform community service. I like Anthony; I believe that CBS overreacted to what was an arrest for a misdemeanor (and one that frankly seems archaic in 2015). New New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan has pleased his fan base with the acquisition of wide receiver Brandon Marshall and the reacquisition of cornberbacks Antonio Cromartie and Darrelle Revis. I am not sure if the moves will lead the Jets to the Super Bowl, but at least they serve as a way for owner Woody Johnson to apologize to his customers for former GM John Idzik’s reign of error. While they have not been the joke that the New York Knicks have turned into this season, the Brooklyn Nets haven’t given fans much. Country Conlee’s Comeback: Fans of one of country music’s most distinctive song stylists have waited awhile, but now he’s returned: Veteran performer John Conlee has made his way back to the radio with the emotional single “Walkin’ Behind The Star,” released on his own RCR (Rose Colored Records) label. The song was written by Nashville industry veterans Ronnie Scaife and Phil Thomas, who collabo- John Conlee rated on the Johnny Paycheck hits “Colorado Cool Aid” and “Me And The IRS” together. The touching lyrics were inspired by Phil’s grandfather and greatgrandfather, both of whom served in their local sheriff’s department. The song had yet to be cut until recent events made the song a little timelier, and the song was pitched to the Grand Ole Opry star Conlee, who was touched by the song’s honesty. “Recent deadly attacks against the people who keep us safe is unprecedented in America, and I wanted to sing this song in honor of their sacrifice and willingness to serve,” said Conlee. “Walkin’ Behind The Star“

can be found on Conlee’s upcoming album release Classics 2, which will feature new material along with many of Conlee’s latter-day classics. The set features Conlee hits such as “Harmony,” “Mama’s Rockin’ Chair,” and “Hit The Ground Runnin’,” which are being issued on CD for the first time since their releases on Columbia

and 16th Avenue Records. Conlee recently celebrated the 36th anniversary of his breakthrough hit “Rose Colored Glasses,” and can be found on the road throughout 2015 as well as the stage of the Grand Ole Opry, where he has been a member since 1981. teenager, has signed with APA Nashville. Though she took time off these past few years to raise her children, the songstress is now prepping to hit the road once again with a new tour and new music.

Tanya Tucker

Since her 1972 debut, Tucker has enjoyed an incredible career that has earned her a wall full of platinum and gold hit records. "I’ve taken a few years off, and it is time to get back on the road," said Tucker. "I am really excited to perform all the hits that the fans love so much, and sing a few new songs that I have been working on.”

Who: Tiger Rose is one of the area’s most popular tribute acts; this one features the music and mood of the legendary Grateful Dead guitarist and mastermind Jerry Garcia. The Artists & Their Sound: Tiger Rose is comprised of a veteran group of area musicians. From their official bio: “Guitar & Lead Vocals: Tom San Filippo is an accomplished guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Being influenced by many genres of music over the years, he has been especially in tune with the music of The Grateful Dead. Having been exposed to the scene at an early age, Tom has developed an innate ability to faithfully recapture the essence of Garcia's sound and style. As a member of Halfstep, Tom is striving to not only give audiences an accurate homage, but to tap into the true vibe that the Dead have always been known for. “Vocals: Rose San Filippo studied voice during her high school years in musical theater, and learned guitar at age 15. Always a dabbler in music with garage bands, open mics, and campfires, she never crossed the line and officially joined a band until Tiger Rose. She is married to Tom San Filippo since 2011 though they met decades earlier, and she considers herself his biggest fan. “Keyboards: From his self-titled band to tours with funk/rock band Earth Eatz Dog, Paul Weiss handles the keyboards uniquely, with a bluesy percussive style that is truly homegrown. Paul played blues with The Jim Kohler Band for almost two decades, and has helped on keys with many bands, including Halfstep, The Electrix, Wiggum, and Dead Horse. Paul has also toured extensively throughout the U.S. and in Europe. “Drums: Phil Weiss is a seasoned touring professional, opening for such great bands as Dream Theater and The Dixie Dregs as a member of the band Star People. He also preformed with the jazz band Natural Element, guitarist Paul Zunno, Jim Kohler, and numerous other bands.

“Vocals and guitars: Teri Nissen is a singer/guitar player from Lindenhurst, After a long absence, she went back to playing acoustic shows in 2009, after raising her children and finally had the time to pursue her love of music and singing. When Tom San Filippo asked her if she would like to join Tiger Rose on backup vocals, it was something that she had never done, but was honored to be asked by such established musicians. Along with singing backup for Tiger Rose, she can be seen doing solo shows around Babylon Village. “Bass: Don Zott locks into the drum beats as a solid bassist, holding down the grooves for 34 years. He’s a musician that can adapt and play any style of music. One of the founding members of the jazz group Natural Element, Don has played with The Dead Horse, The Jim Kohler Band, Jamhogs, Zero Tolerance, and other diverse bands. Jazz, rock, R&B, blues, funk, and life have inspired his foundation in music.” To Learn More About The Artists: At reverbnation.com/tigerrose, or find them at Facebook. Next up in a busy spring: April 18 at Michael’s Porthole in Oceanside.

Penthouse's rival, Playboy, has a success story on its hands: Former centerfold Stephanie Adams – who hosted a Wall Street Even called Ostara on March 20 to welcome the Spring Equinox – is also celebrating the opening of her new medical wellness practices, now with two locations in the Financial District as well as one office near Grand Central, for a total of three companies she started after filing a lawsuit against the City of New York. In 2012, Adams was awarded $1.2 million dollars by a jury and eventually decided to create Wall Street Chiropractic & Wellness with her husband so they could help others suffering from painful injuries as well. "My family and I have a lot to be thankful for, and we are fortunate enough to be able to share our happiness with all of our guests,” said Adams … Long Island favorite Laura Benanti, who recently appeared at Adelphi University Performing Arts Center, has joined the cast of the upcoming “Supergirl” series for CBS; she continues on in the hit series “Nashville,” and also is starring in the New York Spring Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall with Derek Hough, running through May 3 … Veteran baseball broadcaster Wayne Randazzo has joined the radio broadcast team for Mets games on WOR 710 AM. Randazzo, from Chicago, has 10 years of experience, and will host the team's 30-minute pre-game and post-game shows.

It Benanti seems basic and quaint, yet the “Who's Who” remains a favorite of longtime fans as well as a worthy book to keep near your remote control in case you're watching a game and can't remember if Angel Pagan was ever a member of the Cubs. To mark the anniversary, a new book, 100 Years Of Who's Who In Baseball, has also been issued; both the magazine and book feature forwards by longtime New York Yankees publicist and sports Stephanie writer Marty Appel … Kendra Adams Sunderland, the co-ed who was fined for “sex camming” in the library of Oregon State University, has parlayed her infamy into a new contract with Penthouse; she appears pretty much as she displayed herself on the web in the magazine's April issue; the issue should be a boon to the longstanding men’s title, as previous issues featuring celebrities have sold particularly well, dating back to the Vanessa Williams scandal in 1984 … Good Times Magazine - April 7 - 20, 2015 • 21

RHYTHM TRACKING Stream On: Spotify is the new AM/FM radio – only better. Yes, if you want it without the ads, you have to pay nine bucks a month, but hey, a movie costs more, and you're out on the streets again in two hours. My nine dollar investment allows me to enjoy endless Motown or punk rock marathons without having to dig through my thousands of vinyl records and compact discs, and the sound is totally excellent. iTunes now wants what Spotify has, and so does the Apple/Beats Music coalition, so be prepared for streaming to become the number one conveyance for music listening, if it isn't already. It sucks if you're the artists, because the royalties are microscopic, but we wanted the digital world, and we got it. People are still making music, and people are still consuming that music, only in different ways. Collections are obviously out, except for hardcore fans that still buy vinyl or CDs. You can collect your favorite Spotify albums on the site, but you can't (legally) burn them or move them around, so it's a “cloud” collection. Can something become a “hit” thanks to Spotify? The jury is still out, but for the moment, I think most go to Spotify to listen to something after it's already become a hit. iTunes does deliver hits, and that may be how their streaming service will take over the game. Once iTunes streaming is up and running, you listen and buy all in the same moment and immediately affect the iTunes chart, which the Bob industry and Billboard Dylan Magazine now pay attention to. That, in and of itself, may provide the end game and endanger Spotify's future. The people, the advertising, and the hype will decide in the next year who or what comes out on top. Is music as important to the new breed as it was to those of us who are the baby boomers? It is, but in different ways; it is not the music of a “revolution,” or the force that will change the world – the baby boomers already

By Jimi LaLumia

did that in the 1960s and 70s. Civil rights, women's rights, and LGBT rights were all affected by pop culture in those powerful decades, music as well as films, TV, and books (remember them?) all steered the ship into the new, liberated world in which we live, firmly reenforced by all of that culture widely available to the generations that followed, thanks to the worldwide web. Music now provides the color for everything we consume, and there's a multigenerational overlap, thanks, again, to the Internet. My baby boomer pals, the generation that never grew up, are astounded when the young don't know who Bob Dylan or George Harrison is, but, as a kid in the 1960s, I didn't care at all about music from the 1930s – after all, that was 30 years earlier. Why would I care about Bing Crosby, Harry James, or even The McGuire Sisters or Pat Boone for that matter, which were only 10 years earlier? Boomers can't grasp that the 70s was almost 40 years ago and the 60s are 50 years ago, but they need to think about how they felt in the 60s and 70s about “old people's music.” Granted, the importance of being “now,” thereby “hip,” “with it,” and “cool,” are concepts that no longer carry any weight; kids consume what is being made for kids, although they do get exposed to the “old people's music” whenever mom or dad throws on some Hendrix or Joplin. Welcome to the new world.

This follows on the spiky heels of its successful LGBT summer party, an edition of “Miss’d America,” the inauguration of the city’s first openly gay mayor, and the dedication of an LGBT beach. The Atlantic City Alliance has tapped Miss Richfield 1981 as the beachside resort’s new ambassador to the LGBT community. This is part of a strategy to enhance the image of the destination, to reclaim our position as a top LGBT-friendly destination, and to diversify our visitor base.” Atlantic City was a major destination for LGBT (lesbian, gay, transgender and bisexual) visitors in decades past; the city's gay popularity waned when the casinos moved in – but the rainbow tide is turning.

producer Mitch Dane after the birth of her first child, the record captures Miller in transition, moving away from the coffeehouse-friendly songs that filled her previous releases in favor of something l ouder, livelier, and more indebted to the sweep and swell of a full backup band. “I couldn't be more excited about this record,” Miller said. “It's been a long time coming, and I’m so happy to release something that is really reflective of my growth over the last few years — both artistically and personally.” On the self-titled album, there is a new emphasis on electric guitar, keyboards, and, occasionally, moody, reverb-heavy arrangements. Miller's songs are still rooted in the classic sounds of the songwriters she grew up with — Tom Petty, Simon & Garfunkel, even the Ohio-based folk duo Over The Rhine — but their presentation has changed. “We didn't want anything to sound too shiny,” Miller said of the album. “It’s more raw than mainstream pop. Bluesier. Crunchier.” More: hannahmillermusic.com, or find her at Facebook and Twitter.
