enny Lewis, with special guests Girlpool, headlines The Space at Westbury on Thursday, November 6 at 8 pm. Tickets are at ticketmaster.com. Lewis is clearly one of the most celebrated performers of her generation. Beginning her career in 1998 as the frontwoman of Rilo Kiley, the band rose from the burgeoning independent music community in Los Angeles to become one of the most dynamic and influential bands of the early 2000s. By 2006, Lewis began her solo career with the album Rabbit Fur Coat, and soon followed it up with 2008’s Acid Tongue, establishing herself as a songwriter moving beyond the confines of indie rock into more timeless territory. Lewis has

collaborated with many other artists and bands, most notably with Elvis Costello, Ryan Adams, T. Bone Burnett, and M. Ward. In the summer of 2010, Lewis formed the duo Jenny & Johnny with songwriter Johnathan Rice, and released the album I’m Having Fun Now. Lewis released her new album, The Voyager, this summer. The Los Angeles artist’s first solo LP since 2008’s Acid Tongue, The Voyager is Lewis’ most deeply personal, and her most musically robust album. Featuring production work from Ryan Adams, Beck, as well as Lewis and her longtime collaborator Johnathan Rice, The Voyager finds Lewis at her sharp-witted best, singing about her recent life with honesty and incisiveness. And then there’s her voice, which was

already a force to be reckoned with, but sounds even richer, more nuanced, more powerful. Lewis says The Voyager was the hardest album she has ever made, documenting her struggle to cope following the death of her estranged father in 2010 and the subsequent breakup of her band, Rilo Kiley. In the three years she worked on it, there were moments she thought she’d never finish. But, more than ever before, she knew she had to. The story is best told in Lewis’s own words: “Making The Voyager got me through one of the most difficult periods of my life. After Rilo Kiley broke up and a few really intense personal things happened, I completely melted down. It nearly destroyed me. I had such severe insomnia

that, at one point, I didn’t sleep for five straight nights. Many of the songs on The Voyager came out of the need to occupy my mind in the moments when I just couldn’t shut down. “I asked for help from a lot of places. The first song on the album, ‘Head Under Water,’ is about some of that. I really did get hypnotized. I tried everything. I got acupuncture. I did neurofeedback. I did massage therapy. I looked in the phonebook for a healer in Studio City and I met this woman who barely touched me for an hour and then wrote on index cards about what I was going through. All this just to try and get to sleep! I was ready to call the psychic hotline, ‘Tell me when this fucking thing is gonna be over.’”

As its ardent fans know, Styx these days is about much more than recreating their hits “Come Sail Away,” “Lady,” and countless others. Rock To The Rescue – spearheaded by Styx founding member Tommy Shaw’s daughter, Hannah – is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded by the band, whose mission is to build strong, healthy communities through the support of grassroots organizations across the country. It was founded on the principle that our communities are stronger when we work together in mutual aid. Having played more than 1,500 shows in the last 14 years, Styx has been strongly connected with communities

across the country. With local fans and community members making an effort to join in support of Styx, it is important to the band to actively participate in these communities as well. At each tour date, Rock To The Rescue partners with a local group to give back through community outreach, fundraising, and volunteer support. What makes Rock To The Rescue unique is that it works on a grassroots level with small groups, giving real support to real individuals who are creating positive changes in their communities.

The charity is building initiatives in the areas of music education, health and well-being, disaster relief and aid, and animal welfare and rescue. At each tour stop, Hannah Shaw researches local nonprofit organizations and picks one to see if they are interested in volunteering to help the band sell $10 tickets for a drawing to win a signed Styx guitar at the shows. They give these organizations a percentage of the sales as their way of supporting their cause and thanking them for supporting the band’s cause.

LI GAY & LESBIAN FILM FESTIVAL: 17 Years Strong

he 17th annual Long Island Gay & Lesbian Film Festival runs Friday, November 7 through Monday, November 10 at Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington. Individual film tickets are $15, or $10 for LIGLFF and CAC members. All films include complimentary receptions. Tickets and complete schedules are available online at CinemaArtsCentre.org, or at the box office. This year's lineup features gay, lesbian and

transgender features, shorts, and documentaries from the United States as well as Israel, Germany, Finland, The Netherlands, Australia, and Canada. Among the many guest appearances, both live and via Skype, are Olympics diving champion Greg Louganis (Back On Board), native Long Islander and director J.C .Calciano (The 10 Year Plan), Don Scime (lead actor and writer of The David Dance), and the directors of To Be Takei, about the beloved “Star Trek” legend George Takei. The Gay and Lesbian Film Festival of Long Island was started in 1998 as a collaboration between the CommUNITY House of Long Island, the first GLBT center of its kind on Long Island, and Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington. The festival was established as a fundraiser for the CommUNITY House, but just as importantly, it was and still is a venue for GLBT Long Islanders and their supporters to come together and enjoy GLBT films. Although the CommUNITY House has long since closed its doors, the festival remains as the premiere GLBT entertainment event on Long Island. “The festival’s tremendous success has been mirrored in the numerous awards it has received over the years from a grateful GLBT community,” stated the organization in a press release. “This is largely due to the fact that the

mission of the festival has not been solely to present the very best in GLBT features, documentaries and short films. We also bring people together after every show for a reception to rub elbows with filmmakers, actors, members of community groups and each other with food donated by some of the very best restaurants on Long Island. Building on that success, the Festival has expanded to monthly ‘Out at the Movies’ programs at the Cinema Arts Centre. Unlike many other film festivals, our heart and soul continues to be our focus on building community, now just as necessary as when we began 17 years ago.” This year’s event features four documentaries, 11 features, 25 shorts, 11 receptions, 11 musical performances, and an artists’ display. Opening night/closing night and the annual Sunday bagel brunch are $15/20; Festival Passes are $55/$75. Dracula Untold

Starring Luke Evans, Sarah Gadon, Dominic Cooper, Dairmaid Murtagh Directed by Gary Shore Produced by Michael DeLuca Universal

The forumla still works: Take a time-honored character, give it some time, and remake it till the cows come home. The October release of the 453,277th Dracula movie, Dracula Untold, raced past a lot of critically acclaimed films to almost hit number one at the box office the weekend it was released; it finished a fingernail behind Gone Girl and nearly claimed the top spot. Obviously, Dracula can be added to a list that includes Batman, The Addams Family, The Hulk, Spider-Man, and any member of the Bush family running for President in the minds and hearts of America: “Hey, I hearda dat!” says John Q. Public, and off he goes to the cinema/voting booth, warm and safe in the knowledge that he or she is going to get is what he or she is going to get. Don't challenge, don't be original, and heaven forbid, don't be sexual or controversial: Give us the same thing over, and over, and over again. This must be how any given area can keep 64 Grateful Dead tribute bands going within a seven-block radius. So, you guessed it: This particular Dracula, though portrayed moderately well by Evans, who last was seen in The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug, has all the bite of French's yellow mustard. This particular film shines a light on the man who

would eventually become the dark prince. It is with that news that we laugh out loud, and hard, at seening “Bram Stoker” in the writer's credits for this film, since this “re-imagined” Dracula has none of the flavor of any Draculas before him. Much like the horrific perversion that was last year's Hansel & Gretel “action film,” ignore this waste of time, which is similar to those horror/sci-fi films you saw at drive-ins years ago where the monster didn't appear until minute 80 of an 90-minute film. Head instead to a video store or streaming movie service and watch any of the truly worthy Dracula films that have been made over the years.

8 • Good Times Magazine - November 4 - 17, 2014

Completely underrated are any of the Dracula movies made by Hammer Films in the 1960s and 1970s; stylish and exciting, everyone's favorite bloodsucker is portrayed by the perfectly cast and exceptional Christopher Lee or the truly sinister Peter Cushing … The 1979 version of Dracula starring Frank Langella brought a startling sensuous note to the character … Bram Stoker's Dracula, released in 2002, is the most authentic to the book version of the vampire tale you could ever hope to see. Just saved you 11 smackers and $8.25 for a “medium” buttered. – Cody Bell

O.K. The season is only half over and the hometown teams are fighting to see who can underperform. By the time you read this, the Jets will be either 18 or 2-7, and the Giants aren't that much better off. Let's look at it on the bright side...This gives us the opportunity to root for some teams we probably wouldn't touch...the Cowboys, the Chargers, and can we help not rooting for the Redksins? By the time this reaches print, Geno Smith may well be history, but is that such a bad thing? How can you help not cheering on Peyton Manning and the Broncos? You're watching a top dog in action. ew York Jets general manager Joe John Idzik must have felt the Namath pressure of having a 1-6 team combined with the fact that he was doing business on the cheap by keeping the player personnel payroll a whopping $20 million below the NFL salary cap. Idzik used some of that payroll reserve to acquire talented wide receiver Percy Harvin from the Seattle Seahawks for what appears to be a bargain price – namely a conditional draft pick. The defending Super Bowl champions have a surplus of talent, particularly at the wide receiver position. It would be nice to think that they were being altruistic by helping out Idzik and giving Harvin a chance to get more work instead of languishing on the Seahawks bench. The reality is that Harvin will never win an award from the NFL for congeniality, as he has been known to get into altercations with teammates. In addition, he’s prone to injury. Former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach turned NFL personality Bill Cowher has defended the Jets’ Geno Smith by citing the lack of offensive weapons at the quarterback’s disposal. With the receiving tandem of Eric Decker and Harvin, that is no longer the case. Before Jets fans start getting giddy, they should keep in mind what SiriusXM NFL Radio weekend host and “Jets Confidential” editor Dan Leberfeld has frequently stated: Quarterbacks make great receivers and not the other way around. The Jets may not be very good on the football field, but they are the best team in the NFL when it

comes to staging food events. Two weeks ago marked the second annual Jets + Chefs Tailgating Party at Pier 92, part of The New York City Wine & Food Festival that raises money for organizations that fight hunger. Former Jets Marvin Jones, Tony Richardson, Erik Coleman, and Wesley Walker, as well as current players Quintin Coples and Tommy Bohanon were on hand to greet patrons. Of course, the main draw was Joe Namath. On November 10, the Jets will sponsor their “Taste of the Jets” event in lower Manhattan that will aid an array of hunger-fighting non-profits. In addition, the Jets sponsor classes at The Institute for Culinary Education. Perhaps they would have a better record if The Food Network televised their games instead of CBS. Also taking place on November 10 at The Hard Rock Café in Times Square is The Starlight Foundation’s Sports Auction, where New York Mets relief pitcher Vic Black, Brooklyn Nets forward Andrei Kirilenko, New York Islanders defenseman Nick Leddy, and other pro players will meet with contributors. The Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation Dinner, where former Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte will be honored, will take place November 13. David, 57, of Franklin Square, earned the $1,000 top prize as the champion of the tournament. Finishing second was Dan Goldberg of Douglaston, who earned $500; rounding out the top five finishers were Dave Martorella of Meriden, Connecticut ($300), David Chu of New York City ($250), and Joe Evers of Islip Terrace ($200). According to the LIGBT, David’s consistency throughout the shootout gave him the victory. Except for an open in the fourth frame, he marked in every frame while all of the other shootout competitors had multiple opens. In fact, David never doubled in the match, yet still won; his victory was still not determined until the last frame as both Goldberg and Martorella could have won the title with a strike in the 10th frame. The Herrill Lanes tournament drew a crowd of 101 entries, advanced 18 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $3,640. Judi Nelson of West Islip won the October 19 LIGBT tourney at Farmingale Lanes, earning the $1,000 first prize. For complete results of the Herrill Lanes tournament and to find out how to get involved with these enjoyable amateur tournamments, visit ligbtour.com.

LIYBT News: In the first tournament of the season on October 5 at East Islip Lanes, Brian Becktold and Mike Ruben became the season opener champions, while Brandon Guerin fired a 300 game, the pinnacle for any bowler. Fourty-six bowlers took part in the event, where more than $600 in scholarships were awarded. All junior bowlers and high school bowers are eligible to bowl LIYBT tournaments. Scholarship winners, handicap division: Brian Becktold $100, Brandon Guerin $60, Dylan Kowaleski $40, Joe Thomas $30. Scratch division: Mile Ruben $125, Nick Caruana $90, Amanda Naujokas $50, Drew Esposito $40, Adam Glickman $30. Scratch Eliminator (15 entries):, Drew Esposito $15, Brandon Soedarmasto $10, Adam Glickman $5. Future LIYBT tournaments: November 16 at Baldwin Lanes; December 7 at Farmingdale Lanes; and December 21 at Port Jefferson Lanes, with more tournaments to come in the coming months. More information: liybtbowling.com, or find the organization on Facebook at facebook.com/LIYBT. Herrill Highs: Here's one of the latest batches of high league scores from Herrill Lanes in New Hyde Park. Congraultations to Bill Delawski and Bobby Calca for their recent 300 games. Wade Davis, who is the executive director of The You Can Play Project, which seeks to end anti-gay attitudes in sports as well as encouraging LGBT youth to take part in athletics. I half-jokingly said to him that the “Kiss Cam,” which tries to prod couples at sporting events to smooch during a stoppage in the action has never shown a gay couple kissing. We agreed that it is an invasion of privacy

and creates awkwardness regardless of sexual orientation. Davis then added that he complained to the National Hockey League about how many teams end their “Kiss Cam” segment by showing two players sitting on the bench of the visiting team. The home fans go wild with laughter at the players who have to do their best to appear oblivious to the fact that they are being ridiculed. Davis rightfully claimed that this type of punchline fosters anti-gay stereotypes. HBO’s “Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel” debuted its new season on the night that the World Series was getting underway in Kansas City with a long-overdue story filed by correspondent Jon Frankel on how minor league baseball players are paid slave wages, have no union representation, and have few benefits in spite of the preconceived glamor and glitz. The vast majority of pro baseball players are minor leaguers who will never make it to to MLB. Bob Costas, who works for The MLB Network as well as NBC Sports, agreed about the exploitation of minor leaguers players and umpires when I spoke with him two weeks ago at The Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame Awards, where he co-hosted along with Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly. One of the honorees at the B&C Hall of Fame was outgoing MLB Commissioner Bud Selig, who has always talked about Major League Baseball having social responsibilities. Selig looked pained when I mentioned the “Real Sports” piece on minor leaguers. “The Major League teams are looking into how they can improve things for minor leaguers,” said Selig. John Cena has long been the face of World Wrestling Entertainment. To reinforce that fact, he

appears on the cover of the WWE 2K15 video game, and engages in a couple of duets with hip hop star Wiz Khalifa on Atlantic Records’ tie-in CD. Wicked Cool Toys has produced an almost three-foot action figure of Cena in time for holiday gifts. Woodburybased Arizona Wicked Beverages has Cool Toys: expanded their John Cena Shaquille O’Neal line of drinks into the world of reduced-sugar fruit punches. Previously, Shaq lent his name and likeness to flavored cream sodas. Smart athletes looking for a competitive edge such as the Jets’ Chris Ivory are steering clear of drugs and looking into homeopathic ideas such as breathing in dry salt, which clears nasal passages.

TechnoBeat Hey guys, sorry I’ve been MIA for a little while…. The good news is I’m back and you should get yourselves ready. The Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival is coming up on the weekend of Nov. 7 and 8. It’s essentially a 2-day music festival that takes over Brooklyn’s nightlife. This year, they have a slew of artists playing at multiple different venues over the 2 nights including Verboten, Output, and Music Hall of Williamsburg. It’s gonna be a crazy time and lets be honest, what else are you doing that weekend? If you’re not feeling that, there’s plenty of other things going on in the NYC area that you should make sure you don’t miss. There’s some big names coming through the area and I think you’ll be pleased by who we have in the area. Let’s start with Lavo. This Thursday, November 6, we have Morgan Page coming into Lavo with Tritonal coming in the next day on November 7. Two great artists back-toback nights. And then, later on in the month, EDX will be making an appearance at Lavo on November 13. If we take a short trip over to Pacha, we can see the likes of Oliver Heldens on November 7. If you’re not into deep house, then you can go back the next weekend to catch Alvaro on November 14 and then Hardwell the next day. sure you stop by on the next weekend too to see Laidback Luke on November 15. I know that’s a lot to take in, but I believe in you guys. Talking about all these upcoming shows, it makes me think about the show in Syracuse I recently went to see featuring the man himself, Skrillex, who made an appearance at The F Shed and absolutely brought down the house with help

from his openers Valentino Khan, Nadastrom, and Big Gigantic. Before I get to the main act, I just want to say how much Big Gigantic stood out to me. They literally play live instruments during their electronic set. Watching a group play live saxophone and drums over trap songs is something truly incredible and adds immensely to the feel of the show. Skrillex stole the night with his one of a kind sound and his laser light show. When he wasn’t standing up conducting the Star Wars theme song to the crowd, he was mixing like a true master while crazy lights were going

on around him. I’ve never seen lasers in this variety of colors before and they were something to truly marvel at. He played all of his big hits such as Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites and Cinema as well as throwing in some OWSLA label songs in addition to dropping some classics, such as Damien Marley’s “Welcome to Jamrock.” This show reignited my love for Skrillex and I honestly can’t wait to see him again. So I’ve been on my music downloading game lately and you get to benefit from that! Keys N Krates have been doing some extraordinary stuff recently, including the release of their new “Every Nite” EP, which includes the sounds you’ve grown to know and love from Keys N Krates. From chill synths and chopped up female vocals to the freshest beats you’ve literally ever heard, Keys N Krates are on the rise up and they are looking to do some really great things. Additionally, I’ve got some new remixes that I know you’ll love. Make sure you check out the “Rather Be (ANTS Bootleg)” which puts a nice electro house twist on a song that literally every girl has learned the words to in the last few month. And if you’re a fan of The Chainsmokers, make sure you download their remix of “Habits (Stay High)” by Tove Lo as it will get any crowd going; I know because I’ve used it. Well, that’s if for me for now. See you in a few weeks and remember, keep raging my friends and feel free to contact me at richiegtechno@gmail.com.

Long Island Rock Unplugged: Craving Strange • Revel 9 The Vinyl Plane •Jackknife Stiletto Pedestrian Knockdown K.J. Farrell's, Bellmore November 4 kjfarrells.com (516) 804-9925 Take a handful of Long Island's biggest original bands and put them in a room with no amps – and this is what you’ll get. This certainly is a rare opportunity to see not one, but five top area and regional bands in the same place at the same time, playing the songs they do best, but stripped-down and intimate. It's hard to think of a better music value than this show, and a chance to hear some familiar tunes performed in an entirely new way.

Acoustic Thursdays: Pre-Football Village Idiot Pub, Patchogue villageidiotpubli.com • (631) 284-8471 Here's a novel idea that works even better than a slant route: Take one of the most popular music and sports pubs around in The Village Idiot, and gear up the fans for hot football action with great acoustic music before Thursday Night Football. That's exactly what's been taking place at the Idiot since the beginning of the NFL season – and the music and gridiron action will continue on all year. Upcoming in the series: Lauren Hefner on November 6; Erin Chase on November 13; Paul Martin on November 20; and more artists to come as the season rolls on.

It's a concept that's been rocking many a venue both big and small in recent weeks: It's The AM/FM Show, and here's how it works. The “AM band” (so to speak) is 45 RPM, which, according to the band itself, “brings you the cheesiest songs of the 70s that AM radio had to offer.” They're followed by the “FM band” in area favorites Wonderous Stories, which will rock Mulcahy's with the best music from the FM dial.

R

oger Hodgson, Supertramp's co-founder and singer/songwriter and an area favorite, will bring his tour to The Paramount in Huntington on Tuesday, November 11. He will be joined on stage by his full band to perform his classic hits and a selection of songs from his solo albums. For tickets and more information: paramountny.com. Uniting generations at his concerts, Hodgson transports baby boomers back to their youth and gives younger generations a taste of why his heartfelt songs have endured. Hodgson’s songs include such now-classics as "Take The Long Way Home," "Give A Little Bit," "The Logical Song," "Breakfast In America," "Dreamer," "School," "Child Of Vision," "Even In The Quietest Moments," "It's Raining Again," and "Fool's Overture." In concert, Hodgson also delivers select songs such as “In Jeopardy" and "Lovers In The Wind" from his five solo album releases.

ROGER HODGSON

The Legendary Rock Voice Returns To Huntington Much like other veteran artists who have passed through the area recently such as Burton Cummings and Ian Hunter, seeing Hodgson as a solo artist is every bit as entertaining as it was to seem him as a part of his former band, Supertramp. Fans expecting anything less than a full-scale night of hits and memories from this charismatic performer need not worry. “People tell me I am one of music’s best kept secrets,” said Hodgson. “I have many fans

following me around the world because the show I am currently doing with my band is so special. Even many huge Supertramp fans are admitting that the band I have put together actually sounds better than the original, so the audience is in for a wonderful surprise. This year, in addition to my popular duo and orchestral shows, I am performing with an excellent band of four very versatile musicians. They are high caliber musicians and passionate about the music.” A question that Hodgson is continually asked is why he left Supertramp at the height of their hitmaking powers in 1983. “When I left Supertramp in 1983, it was to fol-

low my heart, which was telling me it was time to make home, family, and spiritual life my priority,” said Hodgson. “I wanted to be with my children as they grew up. I had become disenchanted with the music business. Supertramp had been my baby, my life for 14 years but I felt a completion. At that point I chose to have my primary focus be my family and not my career. I also pretty much left the music industry and took my family to a healthier place to raise my kids – up in the mountains of Northern California. I moved out of Los Angeles and built a home studio so I could continue to create music and although I made a few albums, I never toured behind them. My kids are now grown and I'm older and wiser and very happy to be touring again these last years ... Contrary to what people believe, Supertramp did not break up because I wanted to start a solo career or because of difficulties between me and Rick (Davies).” Today, Hodgson seems heathly, wiser, and more than a bit enthusiastic about his current musical life. “One of the things that I like most about making music is how it has brought people together from all over the globe and how many lasting friendships have been made through a common love of my songs,” said Hodgson. “It is a very special and personal connection I have with many of my fans and that the fans have with one another ... At my concerts I’m now seeing three generations singing along with me, and it’s wonderful to see more and more young people discovering my music.” For more on Roger Hodgson: RogerHodgson.com or Facebook.com/RogerHodgson.

Wild Child: Dave Brock’s Doors Experience The Paramount, Huntington, Gramercy Theatre, NYC

Jim Morrison warbled to “cancel his subscription to the resurrection,” then left us on July 3, 1971. Dave Brock and Wild Child turned both these area theaters into The Whisky A Go Go, and brought Morrison back in a way that the singer might not have ever dreamed possible. Brock’s representation of “The Lizard King” is so skilled and visually accurate it made it seem a good idea to check for

contents in the grave at Pere Lachaise Cemetery. Brock was chosen to star in The Jim Morrison Rock Opera by the show’s producers – no less than the singer’s sister, Anna Morrison Graham, and her husband. After his stint in the show, Brock formed Wild Child and has carved a niche by recreating the bands’ performances. The overall production was so spontaneous and precise that former Doors Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek added Brock to their own band from 2010 to 2013. No less than Doors member Robby Krieger delivered the ultimate plaudit to Brock: “Wild Child is as close as you’ll get to the real thing.” At The Paramount, the show opened with “Break On Through,” and the musical portals of perception brought the crowd back to 1967 and Southern California. “Hello I Love You,” “Love Me Two Times,” and “Twentieth Century Fox” followed, and the audience was barely allowed to catch its breath before the group launched into Berthold Brecht’s

“Alabama Song,” moving straight into “Back Door Man.” At The Gramercy, New York City’s grit and the darker theatre were an appropriate ambiance. This evening opened with “Roadhouse Blues,” while many in the sang and danced along to the opening numbers. The band found a groove from the start that takes many groups half a show to find. “I formed this group with the intention of having a great band, not one that just looked like the members of The Doors with mediocre musicians,” Brock said in an interview during the New York stint. “We don’t wear costumes or recite pretend banter in between songs, as if we were

The Doors back in 1968. The focus is on the delivery and performance of the music and recreating the original sound with the exact same instruments that The Doors used. Fans want to hear that music relived live on stage as it was. Most people that come and see us never had a chance to see The Doors, or may not of even been alive at the time they played.” As the band ripped through “Touch Me,” “Riders On The Storm,” “Crystal Ship,” “Love Her Madly,” and “Light My Fire” at The Gramercy, it once again seemed to be the autumn after the summer of love. By the time of the encore (“The End”), it was clear that this is a remarkable band, which also includes Kit Potamkin on keyboards and bass, Gene White on drums, and Pat Hennessy on guitar. We were left wondering if perhaps Brock will handle the vocals for the remaining Doors, Robby Krieger and John Densmore, in the future. We certainly hope so. – Bob Wilson

Ann Klein

Tumbleweed Symphony Sowie Sound

Who: Whatever do you, don’t confuse this Ann Klein with the el cheapo Anne Klein watches you see at Macy’s – this is a veteran area artist that merges Americana with her own natural New York style. She’s an exceptional guitarist and multiinstrumentalis who has performed with artists of every genre, as well as on Broadway. Now, she releases this disc of her own songs, produced by Tim Hatfield (and mastered by the legendary Scott Hull at Masterdisk). The result is a wide-ranging, utterly original, exceptionally performed and arranged album that’s sylistically diverse but hard

to resist. The Artist & Her Sound: From the one-sheet: “With the lucky circumstance of having a talented producer/enginer in the family (her husband, Hatfield), Klein called on Rich Mercurio (drums) and Steve Count (bass) and started recording the album she describes as ‘the Fab Four meets the prairie in a Greenwich Village subway station.’ The 10 tracks reflect Klein’s eclectic musical influences.” “I grew up listening to The Beatles and there’s no way I could erase that DNA in my musical imprint,” said Klein. “No way. I also love blues guitar and in the last few years, I’ve also been very influences by country and Americana, and picked up the mandolin.” The Songs: “Tango Wrangler,” “Start A Fire,” “Remember To Forget,” “I’m Gone So Long,” “Sunday Morning,” “Real Love,” “Rodents In The Attic,” “Rocking Chair,” “Break Out,” “Promised Land.” To Learn More About The Artist: Log on to annkleinmusic.com.

Robert Bruey Carousel Independent

Who: Singer/songwriter Robert Bruey grew up in rural New England, and now lives on the North Fork. This album was produced by Ben Wisch over a seven-month period. The album features some intensely personal songs as well as, perhaps, a shockingly rocking bent at times – but overall, this new material suits this upcoming artist’s multi-

faceted sound perfectly. The Artist & His Sound: From the one-sheet: “Carousel is the step forward Robert has been looking for. It has allowed him to spread his wings sonically without losing the core essence of his strong suit – his voice and unique guitar style … New lis-

teners will be pleased to hear a variety of songs, some soft, some up-tempo and aggressive – with others landing right in the middle. Current fans will be happy to hear the familiar voice adorned with many new sounds and surprises.” The Songs: “Comin’ Round,” “Fracture Of A Sign,” “Open Road,” “Go,” “River Of Stars,” “A Piece Of You,” “Everything,” “Nightengale,” “Anything But Red,” “Whirlwind,” “All This Is Love.” To Learn More About The Artist: Log on to robertbruey.com.

A New Musical Force Sets Sail

Who: The new Long Island-based band Port City is comprised of Marcus Keith, Jonathan Orozco, Leeroy, and Emmanuel Neris. The Artists & Their Sound: From their bio: “These talented individuals were brought together through the power of music. What started as an outlet for two childhood best friends flourished into a bond of four brothers. Port City’s success is a reflection of their drive and passion for a collective first love … music. “The band was formed in late 2009 by Jonathan and Marcus.

Initially an acoustic project, it later developed its own identity when Eman and Leeroy were added in 2010 /11. Port City has cultivated their sound through the influence of genres like neo-soul, indie rock, funk, and jazz. Their sound can be recounted as music that personifies emotion, passion, energy, fun, and love.” Currently, the band is finishing work on its studio-recorded EP; at press time, it was slated to be released this month. Look for big things from this energetic new group, which recently made its debut at K.J. Farrell’s in Bellmore, one of the area’s top venues. Here There, Funny Hair: The lovable loonies of Long Island Comedy rarely take a breather; they're always running around this lovely strip of land providing guffaws, if not outright belly laughs. Up next: Veronica Mosey and Jay J. Boyd, with host Paul Anthony and more than likely some surprises along the way, on November 8 at The Comedy Club at Theatre Three in Port Jefferson. Mosey is of particular note; she's been hailed by Rolling Stone as a standup to watch, and has made frequent TV appearances, including on Comedy Central. Tickets are at longislandcomedy.com … He's out there, he's crazed, he's still really red: Carrot Top returns to the area on November 6 at The NYCB Theatre in Westbury. Tickets are on sale via ticketmaster.com, livenation, com or the NYCB box office. Also at the famed theater in the round: the couldn't-behotter Amy Schumer on November 26, and the triple threat of Eddie Griffin, Bruce Bruce, and Lil Duval on November 28. Haven't seen Bruce for quite some time, and we're glad to see him back in the area … Remember the old joke: “Man … that is one ugly baby!” That might not be such a bad thing – Joan Dangerfield, the widow of one of the most legendary standup stars of all time, Rodney Dangerfield, recently launched “The Rodney Dangerfield Baby LookAlike Photo Contest" on Rodney's Facebook page. The story of it was provided by Joan Dangerfield through her PR firm: She came across a “Saturday Night Live”

show that Rodney hosted in 1980. "It includes a sketch where Rodney donates to a sperm bank and becomes its most in-demand donor," Joan Dangerfield said. "All the customers want their children fathered by him and he has a hilarious time trying to keep the bank fully stocked ... It got me thinking. So I looked online and noticed lots of parents posting pictures of their kids making Rodney faces. They were adorable! One of the babies was only minutes old and displayed an uncanny resemblance. So I decided to have an official contest." The winning parents received two domestic round-trip flights to Los Angeles, and two tickets to the opening night of "The Comedic Genius of Rodney Dangerfield" exhibit hosted by Michael Bolton on Bruce November 2. Learn Bruce more about Rodney's legacy via rodney.com and joandangerfield.com. For those who might not know: Rodney Dangerfield was from Long Island, and was born here in Deer Park … Many area fans are gearing up for the appearance of Mario Cantone at The Space at Westbury on November 22; the man deserves a lifetime achievement award for his Liza Minelli impression alone ... Hot at the clubs: “SNL” vets come to Levittown as Colin Quinn headlines Governor’s on November 5, followed by Brooks Wheelan from last season’s cast on November 7.

Jenna Rose: Sweet 16 Brings Stars & Music

One of Long Island's fastest-rising pop stars, the young singer Jenna Rose – featured earlier this year in a “Long Island Spotlight” feature in Good Times – recently celebrated her “Sweet 16” at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury in a star-laden special event. Rose was escorted and serenaded by teen sensation Sammy Wilkinson to her lavish Sweet 16. Rose performed some of her orginal songs with her dancers during the event; others special guests were Wilkinson and Nate Mololey, who performed for the crowd of Rose's friends, family, and media. Other notable guests included Dillon Rupp, Christian Collins, Kenny Holland, and Jonah Marais. It's been a busy year for Rose; this past summer, she was invited to perform for NFL star Ron Jaworski and other sports legends at his annual golf event in Atlantic City. She also performed at The Wells Fargo Center for The Philadelphia Souls opening game, and performed with Disney star Todrick Hall at The Gramercy Theater in New York, plus shows with fellow Long Island native Robbie Rosen (“American Idol”) and Jillian Jensen (“The X Factor”). Rose is currently on tour with Taylor Caniff & Reality Dance's “The Jam Tour” with many of the stars who appeared at her party. The Long Island-based pop/rock singer/songwriter Gina Cutillo recently released a new single, “Fly (Feel Love Tonight)” – and the video for the song seems to have quickly reached serious hit status at YouTube. “My new sngle has a video that will make you feel warm and fuzzy,” reported the always provacative Cutillo in a letter and link to her fans. “It also can give that special mood to your evening and definitely secure sex for the night, so watch it, share it, comment on it, and tell your friends, because I love you all and we worked very hard on it.” The video can be seen at youtu.be/yd5Ovw3dpqo. The song can also be heard at ReverbNation. The stunning Cutillo, who has released several singles and albums during the past several years, is a longtime Long Island favorite not only for her club appearances and albums but for her talk radio appearances as well.

Video Pays Tribute To Island Park

The rock duo Lucas Klose – comprised of Gary Lucas and Jann Klose – has released a new music video, "Mary Magdalene," which was created in part to bring attention to the fact that many people in the South Shore of Long Island, Queens, Staten Island, Brooklyn, and New Jersey, are still struggling to get their lives back to normal since Superstorm Sandy. When local travel agent Debra Michaels heard that Lucas Klose was looking for a location to film their video for their new song, she called her neighbors, including The Island Park Volunteer Fire Department. "Mary Magdalene" is about living through Superstorm Sandy; it was co-written by Lucas, Klose, and Dan Beck, who has written songs with Dion DiMucci and

Legendary guitairst Brian Setzer, a native of Massapequa, donated his signature orange Gretsch guitar to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History during a ceremony on October 17. The replica guitar is evocative of Setzer’s original 1959 Gretsch 6120 “Stray Cat” guitar, for which he raided his Monopoly game for two dice drilled holes in them and attached them to take the place of the missing tone knobs. To help resemble a 1950s-era “hot rod,” Setzer added three decals that, in the replica, were duplicated with the aid of a master guitar builder. “Brian Setzer is a prolific and distinctive contributor to American music,” said John Edward Hasse, the museum’s curator of American music. “Proof of his legacy exists not only in the longevity of his career and in his lengthy discography, but also in his ability to cross musical boundaries.” In 1982, Setzer released his first single with The Stray Cats, “Rock This Town,” on which he played a 1959 Gretsch 6120 model guitar. As the guitar aged, it began to fall apart. Stephen Stern, a Gretsch master guitar builder, replicated every detail of the original guitar. When Stern presented it to Setzer, he found it to be virtually indistinguishable from the original. It is the 2006 replica that is now in the museum’s collection. “What an honor it is to be in the Smithsonian just for playing the music that I love,” said Setzer. “Maybe in a hundred years people will look at my guitar and be inspired to play it and enjoy it the way I do.” For more information, visit americanhistory.si.edu.

Felix Cavaliere. On September 16, the three writers plus a three-person production crew, Z3Rro The Comet, and Ashley Christopher (recent graduates from Five Towns College), as well as EDM DJ James Messina filmed the "Mary Magdalene" scenes throughout Island Park, showing a wealth of footage of condemned homes, the local fire house, and a favorite pub, The Local Ale House. "Mary Magdalene" now appears at DailyMotion and at Vevo (YouTube). Donations are welcomed by The Island Park Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 500, Island Park, NY 11558.

RHYTHM TRACKING Faded Platinum: It seems like only yesterday that albums would sell millions, the platinum standard. During the 1990s, some artists would sell several million copies in just the first week of a new release, whether it

what I mean: Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Beatles, The Stones, David Bowie, all the way up to and including the previously mentioned Eminem and Guns ’N Roses. "Rebel" equals audience – I know, because I became a fan of many of these Taylor stars because of their Swift rebel reps. The new breed of bands smile, get along with everyone, with no visible, egomaniacal front person. What fun is that? The most recent rebels that I can name are Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, and Justin Beiber, and they're pop stars. The so-called “rockers” are all laid back, hippie-ish bores. So if you want to know what happened, that's what happened. One Direction is more engaging on a “star” level than current bands are. Oh, dear ... Still Raging Thunders: The Johnny Thunders documentary that I wrote about here recently, Lookin’ For Johnny, is now available, at online stores and all the hip DVD outlets. It is the best rock & roll experience I've had in a very long time. I just keep watching it, and you will too; it is what rock & roll was, and possibly could be again. Jungle Records UK is also releasing a limited edition double red vinyl LP of the soundtrack in time for this year's Record Store Day, which is also orderable online and in any existing, actual record stores that you might find. We miss you, Johnny, but Danny Garcia's brilliant film ensures that Thunders will live on forever.

be a new title from Pearl Jam or N'Sync, Guns ‘N Roses or Eminem. Buying the product, owning the package, the lyrics and photos, created a bond between the artist and the fan – until the Internet and "American Idol" came along. Then, it became about the song, and the kids were interested in being the “artist,” creating and posting videos of themselves doing the latest hits. Big names still sold tickets in big venues, but the audience, hands waving in the air to every song (while taking selfies), no longer star-worshipped. Whether this is a good or bad thing is subject to debate, but it is a real thing. Some artists still sell: Adele, the last of the platinum princesses, is still racking up rhw sales on her album, 21, which has been in release for several years; she has sold 12 million copies at this point, but she is a singular exception, not the rule. The other princess out there is Taylor Swift, who is being closely watched by the industry as her new CD, 1989, is readied to hit the racks as a holiday seller. At this point, no album by an artist (excluding soundtracks and “various artists” compilations) has sold a million copies, and the music industry is sitting on the edge of its seat, praying for a miracle. Sagging Stars: In a related point: What happened to stars? For the answer to that, we must ask: What happened to rebels? Trouble makers? Sore thumbs? All the biggest names started out with Miley Cyrus “reputations," if you know

The Daniel Bennett Group has recently shared concert billings with artists such as Bill Frisell, Charlie Hunter, Greg Osby, and James Carter. The band has released five albums: A Nation Of Bears, The Legend Of Bear Thompson, Peace And Stability Among Bears, Live At The Theatre, and the newest release, Clockhead Goes To Camp. Bennett’s band was recently nominated as “Best Jazz Group” in Hot House’s NYC Jazz Contest. Though busy with his touring group, Bennett is also active in the fertile New York City musical theater scene; he currently plays woodwinds in the Off-Broadway hit, Blank! BITS & PIECES Marina & The Diamonds

Marina & The Diamonds: ‘Froot’ Is Good For You

Marina & The Diamonds is among the hottest music acts on the planet – and unique entertainer has just released “Froot,” the first single from the album of the same name. A video for the just-issued song is already causing more than a bit of a stir at YouTube. The new single seems to be the latest in a long line of hits for this talented stunner, who already has topped the charts with her previous albums, Electra Heart and her Top 5 debut, The Family Jewels. For the few who might not know: Welsh by birth, Marina Diamandis describes herself as a “serial college dropout” who once dressed up as a boy to audition for a reggae boy band, hoping to amuse the record label into signing her. After further failed auditions (girl bands, musicals), in a fit of ambitious pique, she taught herself piano and created Marina & The Diamonds in 2005 (and it's just her; the “Diamonds” are the audience). Learn more by checking out the enjoyably off-kilter “Froot” at YouTube.

Exposing Their ‘Dark Mind’

Records and its founder, Janine & The Mixtape. Dark Mind, the New Zealandborn singer, songwriter, multiinstrumentalist, and producer’s debut EP, has been re-released in the US as of today (November 4). The EP was preceded by the new single, “Hold Me (Feat. Pusha T),” which currently is burning up the charts. Now based in Brooklyn, Janine & The Mixtape – known to friends and family as Janine Foster – began performing at open mic nights in her native Auckland when she was 14 years old. She soon developed her own unique amalgam of pop, indie, R&B, and hip hop, all built around her emotional songcraft, unique vocals, and utterly individualistic persona. Released initially by her own Little Mixtapes Records in 2013, Dark Mind shot Janine & The Mixtape into the spotlight – as well as the #2 spot on the iTunes store’s “Top R&B Albums” chart. A tour will be announced shortly; keep up with her via janineandthemixtape.com.

The Real Thing Is Back

Pink Floyd:

After many years away and through enough tumult for 10 classic rock bands, Pink Floyd is back on the charts: “Louder Than Words” a new song, is making the rounds at radio. This new release is taken from the new album, The Endless River, which will be released on November 10 on Columbia Records. Louder Than Words is performed by Pink Floyd; taken from David Gilmour, Rick Wright, and Nick Mason’s 1993 Division Bell sessions, it has new lyrics by writer and Division Bell lyricist Polly Samson.

Jessica Campbell

“The music for Louder Than Words is from those final sessions, the three of us playing together on the houseboat Astoria with Rick’s idiosyncratic keyboards reminding me now that you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone,” said Floyd's David Gilmour. “At the start of the album I asked Polly [Samson] to write the lyrics. She felt that what I played her didn’t need words, that hearing us play was more interesting. In the end she wrote just this one, which expresses, beautifully I think, the way the three of us, me, Nick, and Rick, have something when we play together, that has a magic that is louder than words.” In additon to a regular release, the new album will be available in a rather spectacular deluxe CD / Blu-ray casebook edition (left) that should be a real treat for longtime fans.

‘III’ Is The Charm

Jessica Campbell: With her third album, roots-pop singer/songwriter Jessica Campbell proves there’s strength in numbers: Her new effort, called III, captures Campbell in an adventurous mood, looking to build something new on top of the foundation that’s always anchored her music. She’s still a genre bender, with songs rooted in pop hooks, Americana

influences, folk guitars, and just the slightest hint of Southern twang. “This is a very much a ‘seize the moment’ album,” said Campbell. “It’s about dreaming … and chasing after those dreams, so you can eventually live them. It's about being willing to try.” Learn more at jessicacampbellmusic.com.

Claire’s New Sounds

London Calling:

The New York City-based electro pop-rocker Claire London is preparing to unveil her sophomore EP, Hit The Switch, which is set to drop later this month. The singer’s darkly romantic approach, sampled on the eponymous lead single, has already been hailed by much of the music press. London’s latest effort builds upon the aesthetic of her debut, incorporating powerful, heavy electro-rock elements. Hit The Switch bridges the sonic gap previously established by her best-known songs, such as “Color Me.” Learn a whole lot more about her at clairelondon.virb.com.
