Kevin James NYCB Theatre at Westbury October 12 at 7 & 10 PM thetheatreatwestbury.com (516) 334-0800

The demand to see the former “King Of Queens” star was so strong that a second show has been added at 10 pm. James broke into the film world in 2005 in Hitch starring opposite Will Smith, but his comedy career started well before that as a stand-up on the Long Island scene. After being discovered at the 1996 Montreal Comedy Festival, he signed a network development deal to create his own sitcom, and the rest is comedy history. He returns to NYCB Theatre after his amazing 2013 performance.

Alter Bridge has hit the road stateside one more time in 2014; the red-hot group continues to tour on a headline run this October in support of their latest album, Fortress. This latest 13-city run – with California Breed and Like A Storm also on the bill – includes this performance at The Paramount; this jaunt comes on the heels of their sold-out run this past spring, which had critics raving across the country. California Breed has been making headlines of late as well; the band includes true rock royality in former Deep Purple bassist Glenn Hughes, drummer Joey Castillo, and guitarist and vocalist Andrew Watt.

Glamorous Camping in The Finger Lakes

By Rich Branciforte If your memories of camping are from the scouts or Jellystone Park, it's time to throw away your Walkman and enter the wonderful world of Glamorous camping, or “glamping.” Firelight Camps, founded by Food Network star Emma Frisch and her husband Robert, celebrates its first season of hosting glamorous camping this Fall. Nestled in the landscape on the grounds of the top rated La Tourelle Hotel in Ithaca, New York, Firelight Camps provides its guests with luxury camping through the end of October. But this isn't your typical campground ... With “Glamping” there is no tent to pitch, no sleeping bag to unroll and no fire to build, so you can put away your Scout's manual. Amenities found at Firelight Camps top those of recreational camping experiences. Guests can reserve one of six safari-style tents equipped with hardwood floors, a private balcony, a king or queen size bed, and hotel quality linen. All tents are within walking distances of the well known Finger Lake Trail system and Buttermilk Falls State Park. After exploring nearby waterfalls and scenic gorges, guests can feast in the steakhouse, relax at the spa, or share a communal campfire with local wine, spirits and homemade s'mores prepared by Frisch. There is also a communal lounge where a complimentary breakfast is served each morning, and a phone charging station is accessible to all guests. Don't forget the bathrooms that include a small sauna! Nightly rates start at $155. For more information on Firelight Camps, visit firelightcamps.com.

The stunnng Swedish model Victoria Silvstedt – a former Playboy Playmate of the Year who has graced as many men's and general interest magazine covers as any model in history – made headlines recently for, as a publicist put it, trading the catwalk for financial markets as she's trying her hand at trading. According to a press release from Denmark, where Silvstedt is a major celebrity, the blonde bombshell started trading following the global financial crisis in 2008. She's now fluent in all forms of trading, including fixed income and FX and equity dealing … Speaking of Playboy, the October issue of its magazine recently issued its annual list of “Top Party Schools,” with The University of Pennsylvania taking top “honors.” Others making the Top 10: University of Wisconsin, West Virginia University, University of Arizona, University of Iowa, University of California, Santa Cruz, University of Miami, Colorado State University, University of Texas, and, not leaving New York off the list, Syracuse University … SiriusXM continues to attract celebrities to host new radio programs. As the first home improvement reality TV series, the show began in 1979 featuring expert home renovation for national audiences. Thirty-five years later, its cast of experts hosted a historical homecoming to the Boston area in its season premiere, showcasing classic deep-dive how-to renovation projects in celebration of the shows longstanding commitment to teaching first class, authentic craftsmanship. A pioneer of the genre he helped invent – country rock – Chris Hillman has carved a permanent niche in the history of contemporary American music through his work with The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Stephen Stills & Manassas, and The Desert Rose Band – and it was with the latter that he teamed with Pederson to make country history. Now, these two legends are touring the country in support of their new album, At Edwards Barn, which is currently burning up the bluegrass charts. These are musicians who have, for lack of a better term, done it all, and this is a rare chance to see them in an intimate setting.

This surely appears to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see one of progressive rock's biggest legends in an actual symphony format. Kinks) in the year 1999. Scudder, now clean but still quite troubled, hooks up with a drug dealer (Stevens, in quite the departure from his character of Matthew in “Downtown Abbey”) who is

obsessed with finding out who brutally murdered his wife (page The Dead Kennedys). In the midst of researching the case, Scudder hooks up with a young, eager kid, J.T. (Bradley), a walking cliché (page The Sylvers). Off they go, interrogating creeps and goons, until the inevitable “plot twist” (page Joe Friday). Yet, despite its lack of invention, we can't damn this film; the actors are too good. Neeson continues to be someone an audience can care about within five minutes of the start of a film; he projects more with his expressive face than many actors can with 10 pages of dialogue. Stevens looks, sounds, and acts nothing like his TV character, and is a star in the making. Even Bradley is engaging, though he should kick the screenwiters in in the shins for giving him so many trite lines to utter. Director Scott Frank offers little that's new; his use of long, lingering closeups and freeze frames is right out of the TV mystery playbook; the only thing that differentiates this film from TV dramas is the excessive violence and rough language. A Walk Among The Tombstones fits perfectly with Neeson's last actioner, Non-Stop: Both would be pretty lame without someone of his caliber at the forefront. – Cody Bell

A Walk Among The Tombstones

Starring Liam Neeson, Dan Stevens, Brian "Astro" Bradley, Boyd Holbrook Directed by Scott Frank Universal

Both the best and worst thing that ever happened to Liam Neeson was being cast in the blockbuster Taken in 2009. Since, he's pretty much been Action Liam, which is an odd thing for a actor with his credentials as a serious performer (Schindler's List, Out Of Ireland, Les Miserables spring to mind), but somehow, Neeson is now lumped in with the Pierce Brosnans and Jason Stathams as part of the mystery/drama/thriller pack. Slumming, to be sure, but it's certainly big coin. However, as has been proven time again by things like “Gilligan's Island,” Nikki Minaj, and Beanie Babies, popular doesn't always equate to top-notch quality. A Walk Among The Tombstones plays out like an episode of TV detective shows such as “Mannix” or “Cannon”; this is all formula, and in the words of Eric Idle of Monty Python, it's been done before. At least the popcorn was fresh at the screening we attended. This time out, the plot, based on the book by Lawrence Block, focuses on Matt Scudder (Neeson), a former top New York detective who had succumbed to the demon alcohol (page The

ELECTRIC AVENUE PROFILES Polka Floyd At Monster Music

October, a time for ... what else? Oktoberfest! Quaffing a few good German brews, downing some wurst with mustard and pretzels, listening to oom-pah bands ... and Pink Floyd polka, natch. Brian and the boys at Monster Music have really taken it outside the box with their October 16 instore, featuring Ken Haas and Reverend Guitars. Reverend, of course, is a perennial favorite at Monster, but this year, there will be more than just the usual offbeat designs and innovations that the brand is famous for: Haas, the St. Peter of Reverend Guitars, will be showing up to perform “The Polka Floyd Show,” a tribute band that performs Pink Floyd covers set to a polka beat. Wipe the smile off your face – not only is this a top-notch band, but they are booked solid in September and October as Oktoberfest rivals NFL football for drinking attention. The Floyd gang performed their first show in 2006 after Ken unveiled “Comfortably Numb” with a polka shuffle to longtime polka musicians Frank Dramczyk and Chris Zielinski, who immediately signed on along with accordionist Eric Hite and Ken's wife, Penny. You can see the Reverend line or just get your polka face on at Monster when they present “The Polka Floyd Show” on the corner stage at Monster Music; Ken and Penny will be available for questions about Reverend guitars after the show. The Monster gang has a full fall schedule upcoming, including sponsoring a stage at this year's Oysterfest in Oyster Bay the weekend of October 18 and 19, plus an ESP Clinic on November 13 and “The 12 Days of Axmas” on The Shark Radio. Monster Music is located at 3068 Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown; call them at (516) 735-3594 or check out monstermusicny.com.

By Rich Branciforte Phil Varca & The Slamjammers Open For Robin Trower At The Paramount

There aren’t many marriages that can last 25 years – not to mention local music groups – but Phil Varca & The Slamjammers are about to celebrate their big 25th with a super show, opening for the legendary Robin Trower at The Paramount in Huntington on October 24. Varca, who has nearly a half dozen albums to his credit, is known for his throaty vocals and lusty guitar riffs; he rhas performed all over the country, including the prestigious South by Southwest in Austin, Texas. The trio feeds off the talent of each member and serves up some tasty blues licks. Besides Varca, The Slamjammers feature drummer Russell Stone and bassist Tom Porter. Consistent gigging has brought The Slamjammers a hardcore audience that is fervent in its enthusiasm. Their first full-length release dropped in 1997. The track “Skin On Skin” was featured in the movie “Evil Street,” a horror cult classic that came out in 1998. “We've played before lots of people at The Riverhead Blues Festival and other festivals,” Varca recalled, “but this is the diamond for us – opening for an icon like Robin Trower, who put in his time with Procol Harum before going solo in '71.” For more information, visit The Paramount website (paramountny.com).

I

n the waning days of the regular season, Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig made his final visit to Citi Field; Selig retires from his longtime post early next year. While many New York Mets fans and naive media members seemed to be hopeful that Selig would say something critical of Mets’ ownership, he instead praised the team for its operations. Frankly, I wasn’t the least bit surprised. Selig said that he had no problem with the fact that the Mets are in the lowest third of MLB teams in terms of payroll, with its 2014 salary expense estimated to be $84 million. Why should he be perturbed? As the owners’ chief executive, he would be thrilled if all clubs significantly reduced payroll. Having a team situated in the nation’s largest media market acting parsimoniously makes other team owners take notice. Even the once free-spending New York Yankees are trying to keep things in budget (albeit with a dollar figure more than twice what their counterparts in Queens spend). The Mets’ fiscal thriftiness has to have had an effect on Yankees executives. I think it’s a safe belief that it was Selig who insisted that the Mets make Sandy Alderson their general manager after they fired Omar Minaya four years ago. There are some who believe that Selig would have forced the Wilpons to sell the Mets the way he twisted the arm of former Dodgers owner, the financially troubled Frank McCourt, had he not installed Alderson as the team’s GM. These days, Mets fans have to be envious of their California counterparts. It appears to be open season on NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who clearly should have given Ray Rice a harsher penalty; Goodell

By Lloyd Carroll Sandy admits that he Alderson screwed up. I

believe him when he says that he did not see the infamous Revel Hotel elevator tape of Rice pulverizing his fiancee until after it went public. I can understand why there would be skepticism if it were a team owner who did what Rice did, but what incentive is there for him to cover up for a player? One has to also wonder why the Atlantic County district attorney did not press charges against Rice. The NFL is obviously concerned, because 45 percent of its fans are female – a point that Sheila Johnson, the CEO of the WNBA’s Washington Mystics, brought up during her speech at the Sports Business Journal’s Game Changers conference last month that spotlighted female sports executives. Johnson also pointed out that less than two percent of television sports programming is devoted to female sports. She also took Sports Illustrated to task for its swimsuit issue and for highlighting only female athletes who are physically attractive. He was present at The Paley Center for its premiere, where we discussed his favorite baseball team, the Mets. “Do you think that they’ll ever win again?” he asked out of frustration. Books are delivered to schools, libraries, community centers, soup kitchens, battered women’s shelters, teen programs, homeless shelters, and other venues in some of the highest areas of poverty in the region. “The goal of our Bowling For Books event is to raise enough money to purchase electronic book readers for children who have extended stays in local hospitals,” said Book Fairies founder Amy Zaslansky. “Most hospitals are unable to accept our ‘gently used books’ due to dust and other allergens. E-book readers will help these children academically, but more importantly, the readers will truly engage their minds and provide a distraction from the doctors, tests, diagnoses,

players has never gotten the due that Jackie Robinson did for integrating Major League Baseball. Ironically, Washington and Robinson were teammates on the UCLA Bruins football team. There are understandable reasons for their comparative obscurity; the National Football League in the mid-1940s was an afterthought in the minds of most sports fans, as Major League Baseball was the undisputed national pastime. The New York Giants, in spite of looking rather inept in the first half, easily handled the Houston Texans two weeks ago for their first victory of the year. Before “Big Blue” fans get too excited, they should keep in mind that Texans QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, Harvard’s gift to the NFL, is arguably the worst starting quarterback in the league. They should also be thankful that Arian Foster, one of the league’s best running backs, had to miss the game because of a leg injury. Even though it was their opening game of the season, the Columbia Lions, under the aegis of head coach Peter Mangurian – the Vince Lombardi of losing – were in mid-season form as they not surprisingly lost to the Fordham Rams, 49-7. The stingy Lions offense held the Rams to under 50 points while their potent offense made sure that they weren’t shut out on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Kraft Stadium. Despite losing by 42 points, they probably covered any Las Vegas point spread on the game. Outfielder Brandon Nimmo, the Mets firstround pick in the 2011 amateur draft, was a recipient of a Sterling Award that recognizes excellence in the Mets’ minor league system; the awards were doled out during a pre-game ceremony at Citi Field. Last year, Nimmo was a member of the Savannah team that won the Southern League championship, and this year he was part of the Binghamton Mets that won the Eastern League title. I guess that it’s safe to say that where Nimmo goes, champagne flows; he’ll

aftermath, Grande was named “Best New Artist” at The American Music Awards in 2013. At this point, there’s no question that Grande’s unique and magnetic charm, impressive voice, and astounding presence have enchanted millions of fans worldwide. This year saw her reach incredible heights right out of the gate: The first single from her sophomore album, “Problem" featuring fellow star Iggy Azalea, saw her become the "youngest woman to debut with over 400,000 sold first-week," according to Billboard. In addition to ranking as the fifth highest digital song debut for a female artist and ninth highest ever, the platinum smash debuted at #1 in 65 countries, topping the iTunes overall Top Songs and Pop Songs charts for four weeks. Other accolades followed recently, with Grande winning "Favorite Breakout Artist" at The People's Choice Awards 2014, The "Young Influencer Award" at the iHeartRadio Music Awards, the Radio Disney Chart Topper Award, “Choice Female Artist” and “Choice Single - 'Problem'” at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards, and more. At the 2014 MTV VMAs, “Problem” was named “Best Pop Video” as well. In 2014, she also became the first woman in history and the first artist since Michael Jackson to simultaneously have three songs in the Top 6 of the Digital Songs Chart. Still, the future looks brighter daily as her star continues to rise. Want more? Just log on or open a paper; she’s everywhere.

o, how does it happen? How do megastars happen in the blink of an eye, to the point where their every move is covered by the press, fans, and social media alike? This type of rapid ascent is currently happening to Ariana Grande, who clearly ranks as pop music's biggest breakout star of the year. From the gossip pages to the charts, it seems the music public simply can’t get enough of her. Grande recently announced a 2015 tour in support of her Billboard-topping #1 album, My Everything, which was to include a stop at Madison Square Garden ... but now, it’s two stops and counting. Demand for tickets is so high that in addition to the previously announced

March 20 date, a show on March 21 has been added as well. Tickets for both performances are available through livenation.com, but act quickly. So what led to such public adoration in so little time, making her “The Honeymoon Tour” the hottest ticket in the land? In reality, it’s been a lot of hit records: Grande initially landed at the top with her first full-length album for Republic Records, Yours Truly. It debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200, Billboard Digital Albums Chart, and iTunes Overall Albums Chart. Moreover, it yielded the game-changing pop smash "The Way," featuring Mac Miller. One of 2013's defining songs, the single went double-platinum, hit the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, and reached #1 on the iTunes Overall Top Songs Chart. In the

f it's cutting edge you want, it's cutting edge you're gonna get: The Kooks, with specials guests Halsey and Priory, perform on Thursday, October 9 at 8 pm at The Paramount in Huntington. Tickets and information: paramountny.com. British rock act The Kooks is a self-described “pop” band that draws inspiration from various sources to create its unique rock sound, borrowing equally from the ’60s “British Invasion” bands and the post-punk revival of the new millennium to craft its songs. The band has achieved massive success globally since their breakthrough into the mainstream with debut album Inside In/Inside Out (2006), which

achieved quadruple platinum status in the UK within a year and earned the band awards for Best UK & Ireland Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2006 and a nomination at The Brit Awards for the single “She Moves in Her Own Way.” Sophomore album Konk debuted at #1 on the UK Albums Chart, selling 65,000 copies in its first week alone. Their third studio album, Priory

boundaries of the Northwest, Priory is comprised of four members who have convened to assemble the variances of their musical convictions. Songwriting began with the reunion of longtime collaborators Brandon Johnson and Kyle Dieker in 2008. Greg Harpel was soon added to the roster on guitar. The recent addition of Portland drummer Joe Mingus (Climber) on drums rounds out the sound. Using Portland as a base of operations and strong support of the community therein, Priory has honed in on its sound, rooted in folk with the hooks of the best pop, the energy of electronic instrumentation, and the backbone of punk rock percussion. In addition, the use of eclectic vocal harmonies bring an anthemic charge that makes this a truly original sound, perhaps a first in rock music.

Junk Of The Heart was released on September 2011. Following sold-out shows in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and at SXSW earlier this year, The Kooks are back on the road again, sharing material from their upcoming fourth album. Also on the bill are two much-talked about newcomers: Halsey is making bigger waves by the day; “Ghost,” her single released in July, has critics raving about her new original sound. A deep and introspective alternative rocker with a host of influences, she's also become a social media favorite thanks to her open mind, and also her bent for posting some uninhibited “selfies.” Also performing is Priory, a group many are dubbing the next breakthrough band from Portland, which is already signed to Warner Bros. Records. The group's single, “Weekend,” scored big at radio this past spring. From the within the

Badfish: A Tribute To Sublime Mulcahy's Pub & Music Hall, Wantagh October 11at 9 PM • muls.com (516) 783-7500 • ticketweb.com

In 2001, Badfish played its first show in Rhode Island to 500 fans, many of whom drove an hour or more to celebrate the music of a band whose run ended far too soon amid the tragic death of lead singer Brad Nowell in 1996. But no one could have predicted what was about to happen – to this day, Badfish still maintains the spirit of Sublime and helps to carry on its legacy with grace.

Beyond Fab K.J. Farrell's, Bellmore October 18 at 10 PM kjfarrells.com (516) 804-9925

“Mop Top” fans, take serious note: Mike Green (bass, guitar, keyboards, vocals), Pete Bross (drums, vocals), George Tebbit (guitar, bass, vocals) and Michael Ponella (guitar, vocals) have formed Beyond Fab, the area's newest Beatles tribute band. If the roster of musicians looks familiar, it should: This group features members of Macca Nation and Tuesday Afternoon, as well as former members of The Liverpool Shuffle.

Ahh, can't you tell from the name? “Country Nights” at both of the area Nutty Irishman locations are turning the mid-weeks into southern festivals of dance and nostalgia. Southbound is, of course, a band that performs favorites from the soon-to-be retired Allman Brothers Band, but they're more than that – they perform blues, rock, country, southern rock, and classic rock songs and make them their own. If one night of Southbound is not enough for you, don’t fret: The Nutty Irishman’s location in Farmingdale also runs weekly country events, with the band headlining there on October 21 as well.

pple, Universal Music Group, and rock veterans U2 recently joined forces for the release of the album Songs Of Innocence, which Apple notably gifted to iTunes Store customers around the world, making it the largest album release ever, with more than half a billion copies distributed. The album features 11 new songs from the band, and charts their earliest influences from 70s rock and punk rock to early 80s electronica and soul. The album was made available for free for iTunes Store account holders in 119 countries and was available exclusively on iTunes for five weeks; the album will be released on CD and through other outlets on October 13. “From the very beginning U2 have always wanted our music to reach as many people as possible, the clue is in our name I suppose — so today is kind of mind-blowing to us,” said U2

lead singer Bono. “The most personal album we’ve written could be shared with half a billion people… by hitting send. If only songwriting was that easy It’s exciting and humbling to think that people who don’t know U2 or listen to rock music for that matter might check us out. Working with Apple is always a blast. They only want to do things that haven’t been done before — that’s a thrill to be part of.” Songs of Innocence features 11 new songs from the band, charting their earliest influences from 70s rock and punk rock to early 80s elec-

tronica and soul and giving insight into how and why the band came together and the relationships in and around them, their family and friendships. Recorded in New York, London, Los Angeles, and Dublin the album is produced by Danger Mouse, along with Paul Epworth, Ryan Tedder, Declan Gaffney and Flood. Apple and U2 share a special connection in music. U2 was an important partner for the opening of the iTunes Store in 2003. Apple worked with U2 on the iPod U2 Special Edition,

and created The Complete U2 box set. Apple has partnered with Bono and (RED) to fight for an AIDS-free generation by creating (PRODUCT)RED merchandise. More than $75 million has been generated by Apple for the Global Fund. Despite some Apple customers reportedly rejecting the new album, most fans in this area seem delighted with the free music; the release became a major news headline. Compact discs of the new album are out October 13.

he Machine – as in “Wecome To The Machine,” one of Pink Floyd’s biggest hits and a tribute act to the legendary British rockers – headlines once again on Friday, October 10 at The NYCB Theatre at Westbury. Tickets are now on sale, and are available via Ticketmaster.com, charge by phone at (800) 745-3000 or at the Westbury box office. For more information, visit thetheatreatwestbury.com. The Machine, hailed by many as America’s top Pink Floyd show, has forged a 25-year reputation of excellence, extending the legacy of Pink Floyd while creating another legacy all their own. Over the years, The Machine has touched the hearts and souls of many, selling out theaters, large clubs, and casinos across North and Central America, Europe, and Asia. They have also appeared at renowned music festivals such as Bonnaroo, Riverbend, Gathering Of The Vibes, Buffalo's Artpark, and Germany’s Rock of Ages.

WELCOME TO THE MACHINE:

America’s Top Pink Floyd Tribute Returns To NYCB Theatre At Westbury The New York-based band focuses on making every show an authentic “Floydian” experience for their fans. Known for performing a diverse mix of The Floyd’s extensive 16-album repertoire (complete with faithful renditions of popular hits as well as obscure gems), The Machine’s musicianship,

dramatic lighting and video, and passionate delivery sets them above and beyond other tribute acts, according to their PR team. In the classic tradition, The Machine explores collective improvisation paralleling and even rivaling that of an early 1970s Pink Floyd mentality. Their use of expanded theatrical elements and elaborate stage displays continues in the spirit of the later Floyd lineups of the 1980s. The band is also known for recreating entire albums as a part of their show, accepting requests from fans, and for taking an “A to Z” approach in which one song is played for every letter of the alphabet. Additionally, the

quartet has been sharing the stage with full symphony orchestras, including the Atlanta, Detroit, Pittsburgh and San Diego Symphonies. Hits: Their release, Unplugged (2006), which aptured a special acoustic performance at B.B. King’s in New York City featuring rare Syd Barrett solo material and deep cuts from early Floyd albums. Live In Amsterdam, a concert DVD, hit stores in 2008. The band is comprised of Adam Minkoff (bass, vocals), Scott Chasolen (piano, keyboards, and vocals), Ryan Ball (guiar and vocals), and Tahrah Cohen (drums and percussion).

A-Listers Everywhere: This truly is a huge time for comedy in Long Island, with huge stars performing at top venues all around: Face Mr. Lopez: Legendary standup George Lopez brings his “Listen To My Face” comedy tour to The NYCB Theatre at Westbury on Friday, October 17 at 8 pm. For two seasons, he hosted “Lopez Tonight”, a late-night talk show on TBS, which represented Lopez’s return to series TV after cocreating, writing, producing, and starring in the groundbreaking sitcom “George Lopez,” which ran for six seasons on ABC. That show remains a hit with viewers in syndi-

cation on both broadcast stations and cable’s Nick at Nite, ranking as one of the top-rated shows on the network and among the top five comedies and top 20 weekly programs in syndication. Jazz & Blues Montreux (2005). This new

Clare release features the classic Fischer Healy trio backed by a

Rock Fit For A King

Who: The Royal Guard is Todd Davidson (lead Vocals, guitar), Andy Ascolese (guitar, vocals), and Fred Scragg (drums). The Artists & Their Sound: From the press kit “Upon returning back home to New York after living five years in Eastern Europe, Todd was ready to create exciting music that can reach people. First he called Fred. They worked great together, but something was missing. The next call was to Andy, and everything started falling into place. “When The Royal Guard completed their debut album, Showdown, in 2009, they traveled to Eastern Europe to a country called Estonia.” "It was so amazing how we were received," said Andy. "We played in front of these people for the first time ever and they immediately followed us around the country until we left." “When they came home from touring, the band had to pull through with its share of hardships. They had to watch Todd lose his mom after a long battle with cancer while their drummer was fighting the same fight, going through series of radiation and chemo. These events halted the band for a season, but didn’t stop them. Quite contrary, it gave them inspiration for some new music. “After a few months of pre-production, in 2013 The Royal Guard started recording their sophomore effort, Hail The King. These songs are powerful. These are the songs that the band turned to in the tough times they were going through. This is a different band than the one that was on Showdown.” "These are songs of Hope" the band said jointly. "These songs helped us

heal, let us blow off steam, and they give us hope. And we feel that they can do the same for others." “The new album is produced by Andy and co-produced/engineered by Andrew Gearhart (Matt &Kim/Micheal Franti/Young The Giant). "We were able to get an amazing sound in my parents’ house" Gearhart laughed. "This is a homemade album, but I don't think anyone would be able to tell." “The guys are back and they are more determined than ever, playing local clubs and venues, and putting on an amazing live show.” Our Take: How completely

refreshing – a straight-ahead, no-frills, real rock trio in the classic tradition that still manages to sound and look completely modern. To compare them to other trios such as Green Day would be off base, as The Royal Guard is so original that to try to link them to peers sould be utterly unfair. Take a listen to find the sort of band that could bring rock back to national radio in a big way. To Learn More About The Artists: Log on to theroyalguardband.com, or find them at Twitter, Facebook, and Soundcloud. The band will perform at The Emporium in Patchogue on December 7.

News & Grooves: Clavo Records has released Pacific Jazz, a new album by the legendary Clare Fischer Big Band – which features Bob Sheppard, Andy Martin, Ron Stoudt, Alex Budman, Carl Saunders, and Scott Whitfield. The album is “directed” by Brent Fischer, naturally; it's also available as a digital download (clairefisher.com) … The late blues/rock guitarist Jeff Healey is one of the few artists whose albums that have been released posthumously are of equal quality to his earlier works. The original Jeff Healey Band's new release is Live At The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern: 1993, which follows previous Healy albums from the vaults that have been released on the Eagle Rock Entertainment label, including Live From NYC (2013), Live At Grossman’s (2011), Full Circle – The Live Anthology (2011), and Live At

keyboardist and backup singers … Canadian jazz singer Carol McCartney is drawing raves for her new album, Be Cool, which she launched at Toronto's top jazz room, Jazz Bistro, in September. "This new recording project is a little more contemporary than my last CD, but it is still classic jazz,” said McCartney in a release about the new disc. “We recorded it at CBC's Studio 211, and once we got in there, the tracks went down quickly and seamlessly. It was a blast! The band played beautifully!" Highlights of the album include the Joni-Mitchell composed title track; Jerome Kern and Johnny Mercer's 1942 hit "I'm Old-Fashioned"; the elegant and rarely performed "For Heaven's Sake;" the stylish bossa-nova "Almost Twelve" by Cassandra

Wilson, and much more. "I think that Be Cool was, in fact, a very cool project – and of course, how could it not be when Brian Dickinson, Lorne Lofsky, Kieran Overs, Terry Clarke, Chris Robinson, Mike Malone, and engineer Dennis Patterson are all there with me creating it,” said McCartney. “The arrangements, which were predominantly divided between Brian Dickinson and Rick Wilkins, brilliantly blend cool classic jazz with a fresh contemporary style and perspective. Our motto was: 'Play a tune three times maximum, move on and have fun at all times.' ‘More Than You Know’ is a first take. We recorded the entire CD over Christmas during some very stormy days, and it was cold … but we had a blast."

PERFORMANCE

Still Cheap At Twice The Price Cheap Trick continues its run of nearly four decades of touring; this stop at The Paramount was part of its current trek. Longtime members Robin Zander (vocals and rhythm guitar), Tom Petersson (bass), and Rick Neilson (guitar) now have Rick's son, Daxx, watching their backs from the drum kit, and he handled the chores with skill. The band opened with “Hello There” and filled the air with songs that any diehard fan would drool for. They reached into their canon for the next selections, “ Standing On The Edge,” “California Man,” “You're All Talk,” “Stop This Game,” and “Just Got Back”; casual fans had to wait until the end of the show to hear songs that would be familiar to just about anyone acquainted with rock & roll. “That 70s Show” could have served as a title for the festivities on this evening as well as for Aston Kutcher's launching-pad television program.

Hard to ignore: Former drummer Bun E. Carlos was notable by his absence, and is reportedly currently involved in litigation with his old band. Carlos had reportedly suffered back problems that kept him from touring with the group, so the capable progeny Daxx Nielsen has been enlisted for road campaigns. According to reports, Carlos claims to have been cut off from touring and recording sessions, although the band has stated that he is still a member. Also in the news: A countersuit by the band against the beleagured drummer was dismissed, and Carlos still seems hopeful that a reunion may be in the stars for the future. What would rock be without the gratuitous drama of

Cheap Trick • The Paramount • Huntington

infighting among original classic rock group members? Back to the stage: A Lou Reed tribute of sorts was offered as Petersson took over lead vocals for the Velvet Underground classic “Waitin' For The Man.” Up next and notable were “Heaven Tonight,” “Big Eyes,” “Never Had a Lot To Lose,”and “Gonna Raise Hell,” all performed well, though the sound could have been toned down a bit. A cover of the Beatles classic “Magical Mystery Tour” brought to mind the Double Fantasy sessions that Nielsen and Carlos did for John Lennon just prior to the ex-Beatle’s death in 1980. Lennon decided to go for a less bass-heavy sound on the release, but the story is now part of mythos and lore. Cheap Trick often has covered the Beatles catalog over the years; another cover from the “Lads” would have been even more enjoyable during this concert. The best was saved for the last

quarter of the show: “Surrender,” “I Want You To Want Me,” and “In the Street” (the theme from “That 70s Show”) were topped off by “Goodnight.” For the last number, eight-year-old “Six String” Andrew Sullivan played rhythm guitar, and proved W.C. Fields’ axiom about kids stealing the spotlight correct. Andrew strummed with the confidence of a veteran rocker as his mom stood in front of the stage, understandably screaming her lungs out. Nielsen broke out his five-necked guitar as the band and audience were enamored by the playing of their young protegé. Opening the show was The Dirty Pearls, a band that has toured with Lady Gaga and lauded by the press; the Pearls shined in a short but sweet set. Tommy London and crew ripped into “New York City Is A Drug” and whetted the crowd's appetite for a full night of rock. – Bob Wilson

T

he influential self-made modern rock band Jimmy Eat World makes a rare Long Island appearance when it headlines The Space at Westbury on Monday, October 20 at 8 pm. Tickets are on sale now via ticketmaster.com. The band's last full-length, Damage (2013), was preceded by Invented, which features the signature big hooks and sing-along melodies for which the band has become famous. Fans of the band’s older hits like “The Middle,” “Sweetness,” and “Pain” found a lot to grab onto … and those same fans will be happy to learn that Mark Trombino, who served as a producer on the band’s first three albums Static Prevails, Clarity

and Bleed American, wa s again at the helm for Invented. While the music is “classic Jimmy Eat World,” the lyrics come from a completely different place than ever before. Jim Adkins, the band’s primary lyricist, credits this new lyrical direction to an exercise he created for himself as the band was putting the finishing touches on their previous album, Chase This Light. At the time, Adkins had recently discovered two books – Cindy Sherman’s “Completely Untitled Film Still” series and Hannah Starkey’s “Photographs 1997-2007” – and became taken with the creation of his own back stories for each photo. “I would take about ten minutes and blast through every aspect of the scene that came to me. Who was this particular character and who

were the people in her life? How did she end up in this scene?” Adkins says, “It was intended to be a writing exercise -- much like an exercise lots of people employ every day called ‘object writing.’ The point wasn’t to get material for Jimmy Eat World songs, it was only to get my brain in a mindset for working. Eventually, though, ideas developed in those sessions did start creeping into songs. The album title ‘Invented’ refers to a song which I feel sums up the mood here,” Adkins adds, “but could also be taken more literally as this album is the deepest into character writing we have tried so far.” The reconnection with producer Mark

Trombino occurred in San Diego during the band's sold-out national tour commemorating the 10-year anniversary for the album Clarity. “Mark is a ninja with a computer,” Adkins adds, “After trying out a couple songs we knew he brought something really complimentary to the sessions. We would be recording the foundations of one song in Arizona as he was mixing another song in California.” Jimmy Eat World got its tart in 1994 and has gained a reputation for being a band of perseverance and hard work. Since the 1999 release of Clarity, they’ve sold millions, appeared on “Saturday Night Live,” and have toured yearly.

RHYTHM TRACKING Beatz Bleats: Beats is rumored to be facing a shutdown by Apple. The computer company acquired the brand a while back, making Dr. Dre a billionaire according to some, and snagged producer Jimmy Iovine in

Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga the process. Apple is denying the shutdown, but some folks think that the deal was done mainly to bring Iovine into the Apple camp and negate a possible competitor for Apple's iTunes. Beats, of course, are the “must have” headphones that everyone walks around with these days (I myself am quite happy with my Bose noise-canceling QC15s, but hey, what do I know?). What I do know is that there is no app for Beats Music on the new iPhones (the fancy bending ones), so that does not bode well for Beats Music's future. iTunes will remain Apple's primary music source. U2 Doings: Apple gave U2 tons of money for their new album; everyone with iTunes got the new songs whether they wanted them or not, and both Apple and U2 got tons of publicity as part of the bargain. There is a cool U2 TV commercial making the round, featuring their Joey Ramone tribute song with footage of The Clash, and Patti Smith thrown into the mix. Bono has always been a verbal champion of punk and still throws the term around quite liberally, which I guess is a good thing if it turns kids onto Patti, The Clash, Ramones, and all the rest of my old crowd. Regardless, radio is not rushing to play new U2 music; Ariana Grande and Iggy Azalea have nothing to worry about from those old-timers.

By Jimi LaLumia

Babs Still Fab: Yet, there are some old-timers that Ariana and Iggy do have to worry about – first and foremost is Barbra Streisand, whose new duets album, Partners, went right to #1 on the Billboard albums chart and will probably stay up in the Top 10 through the holidays. Right behind her is Tony Bennett, now in his 80s, who has teamed up with Lady Gaga for Cheek To Cheek, all standards from the days before rock & roll; this album is also zooming to the top of the sales charts. Proving there's always room for another diva, Bette Midler is unleashing her first album in years, It's The Girls, featuring covers of girl groups from the 1940s to the present day. The boomers know how to buy albums, and their clout is being felt on the national charts in a very big way these days. Punk’s “Brand” Lives: CBGB has now taken on partners for a worldwide branding campaign that will likely lead to clubs opening up with the iconic name on their marquees. Japan wants one already, and there's been talk of a Las Vegas version of CB's for years. Merchandise is also about to flood the market in addition to the CBGB shirts that you see all the bubblegum teen stars always walking around in to insinuate how cool they are. Now, if only Max's Kansas City would step up to the plate. The 50th anniversary of Max's happens in 2015, and the long-festering Max's documentary film is supposedly going to be released in time for the festivities. Max's was around for a decade before CBGB, and Max's is where Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground originated punk alongside Iggy & The Stooges, The New York Dolls, and Wayne County.

CLASSIC ROCK

Favorites & Legends Rock On Photos: Rolling Stones by Helena Smith; Chrissie Hynde by Dean Chalkley

Compiled by Bob Smith

The Rolling Stones

Eagle Rock Entertainment is about to deliver a double dose of The Rolling Stones this November, with the debut of the new series of live concerts: From The Vault. The series will unveil live concert films from the Rolling Stones archive, now receiving their first official release. The footage from these concerts have been carefully restored, and the sound has been newly mixed by Bob Clearmountain. From The Vault – Hampton Coliseum – Live In 1981 will be released simultaneously on SD Blu-ray, DVD/2CD, DVD/3LP, DVD, and digital formats on November 4; From The Vault – L.A. Forum – Live In 1975 will be released on DVD, DVD/2CD, DVD/3LP, and Digital Video on November 18 … Our review of Rod Stewart's recent Jones Beach show that noted it more resembled a Las Vegas revue than a rock concert seems to have been onpoint: Stewart is now “in residence” at Caesar's Palace on the Strip; he just finished a run there, and the next one rolls from November 5 through 23 … John Mellencamp recently announced dates for his upcoming

City: April 20 and 21 at Carnegie Hall, and April 23 and 24 at The Apollo Theater … We haven't heard much of The Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde of late, but now she's back in a big way: Hynde is about to launch a 25-date North American fall tour in support of her new album, Stockholm. The upcoming tour dates will feature the first live performances of Stockholm material alongside classics spanning Hynde's career with The Pretenders. She'll headline on November 5 at The Beacon Theatre in New York City … Soft rocker Richard Marx returns to the area on October 18 when he headlines The Boulton Center in Bay Shore … Irish rock guitarist Rory Gallagher was firmly established as one of the best fretslingers in the history of the genre before his life was tragically cut short in 1995. October 20 will see the 40th anniversary expanded deluxe edition release of one of Rory Gallagher’s most celebrated recordings, Irish Tour 74, on Sony Music/Legacy Recordings – and it's the most expansive edition to date of this landmark

Kayla Adams

Kayla Adams:

Country Newbie Soars – Really

Country newcomer Kayla Adams kicked off the annual Mountain Madness Airshow with a performance at the event's pre-flight party for the USAF Thunderbirds on August 29 in Kalispell, Montana. A native of the state, the young star is currently lighting a fire at radio with her debut single, "Sober & Sorry." The track, a rock-tinged, straight-shootin' country girl's answer to good love gone bad, sat at #42 on the MusicRow Chart at press time; it also had debuted on “The Boot.” Adams' visit home wrapped up a seven-week radio promo tour in support of the single, which continues its rise up many charts. "It's always an honor to play before your hometown crowd," said Adams, who noted that she has fond memories of attending previous air shows with her family; to be performing before the large crowd this year was definitely "a blast." Learn more about Adams at Facebook.com/kaylaadamsband.

The video, written by the band and directed by Nick Peterson, is intended to increase knowledge about the plight of veterans suffering from PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and its larger repercussions for our country by way of affecting their mental and physical health, family life, assimilation back home after service and garnering quality job placement, among many other issues. The clip has received more than 3,669,411 views since its release on August 11. For more news on Five Finger Death Punch, log on to fivefingerdeathpunch.com.

‘Pete’ Book New Fall Offering

The Boss’ Outlaw:

Simon & Schuster has added a unique title in its fall book release schedule: Outlaw Pete by Bruce Springsteen and Frank Caruso, based Bruce on the song about a Springsteen bank-robbing baby whose exploits become a meditation on sin, fate, and free will. Both the song (from Springsteen's 2009 Working On A Dream album) and the new book Outlaw Pete were inspired by a children's book, Brave Cowboy Bill (Simon & Schuster, 1950), which Springsteen's mother used to read to him as a child. "Outlaw Pete is essentially the story of a man trying to outlive and outrun his sins," Springsteen wrote. Caruso, a cartoonist and

writer, conceived of making the song into a book and created the illustrations to accompany Springsteen's lyrics. "When Bruce wrote 'Outlaw Pete' he didn't just write a great song, he created a great character," Caruso said. "The first time I heard the song this book played out in my head. Like Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, Dorothy Gale and for me, even Popeye, Outlaw Pete cuts deep into the folklore of our country and weaves its way into the fabric of great American literary characters. " Simon & Schuster, which acquired world rights to the work, will publish Outlaw Pete on November 4.

Craig Ferguson

Ferguson’s New Hit

‘Name Game’:

Featuring a stunning array of celebrity guests including Tom Arnold, Lisa Kudrow, Kevin McHale, and Mena Suvari, as well as show producers Courteney Cox and David Arquette, Celebrity Name Game, hosted by the soonto-be former late night host Craig Ferguson, appears to be a massive hit following its September 22 national launch (locally on WPIX/ Channel 11). The show is attracting a huge numbers of celebities that audiences might not expect to particpate in such a program, including more than a few

first-time game show contenstants who will join players as they compete in four rounds of fast-paced gameplay for a chance to win up to $20,000.

From Alaska To NYC

Hilary Gardner:

Singer Hilary Gardner grew up in Alaska, but was infatuated with New York City. Her recording debut, The Great City (now available) is Gardner's love letter to her adopted hometown. "I wanted to acknowledge the breadth of musical influences in my life while still making a cohesive musical statement," said Gardner of the new disc, which includes the title track, which is her love letter to the “Big Apple.” Learn more at HilaryGardner.com.
