BEER & SPIRITS Flynn's Fire Island Beer Fest promises to be the hot ticket for beer lovers this August. On August 16, 25 breweries will be pouring samples of more than 50 of their finest craft creations. Black Crowes fans, take heed: The legendary vocalist Robinson's band of tireless road warriors is coming to Long Island, and like the Crowes it's proving to be a force to be reckoned with. With three albums since 2012, the lineup includes Robinson (lead vocals, guitar), Neal Casal (guitar, vocals), Adam Macdougall (keys, vocals), George Sluppick (drums), and Mark Dutton (bass, vocals). The band's newest disc, Phosphorsescent Harvest, has both Crowes and Brotherhood fans happy, since Robinson is still proving to be a major voice in rock – and one that still shines in concert like few others can.

Get On Up: The James Brown Story
Starring Chadwick Boseman, Nelsan Ellis, Dan Aykroyd Directed by Taylor Tate Universal
Johnny Carson remarked that he was great in front of 10 million people, but not so good in front of just 10. The same can be said for the “Godfather of Soul,” James Brown, based on what we see in this new biopic. Throughout the film, we see Brown (Boseman) disrespecting the women in his life, his loyal band, and his longtime best friend, Bobby Byrd (Ellis), yet he is a tour de force when he gets on stage and breaks into his “hardest working man in show business” persona. As Brown, Boseman sings, knocks the microphone stand back and forth, and dances in such a way that it seems he’s defying gravity; the fact that he’s lip-syncing Brown’s vocals doesn’t detract. Boseman, a fine young actor who credibly portrayed Jackie Robinson in 42, channels Brown here with his fast patter; picks up Brown’s tendency to address everyone around him by mister and their surnames; and how Brown always refers to himself in the third person. The film shows why Brown was such an influence on nearly everyone who came after him in the world of both rhythm and blues and rock. Director Taylor Tate shows how Brown was introduced to white America as he recreates his appearance in the 1965 flick Ski Party, as well as using actual footage from the 1964 concert movie The T.A.M.I Show. With all of these things going for it, Get On Up squanders a lot; constant timeline shifting is headacheincuding – the film starts in 1988, then randomly shifts
decades back and forth throughout. Aside from Brown’s rise from a troubled childhood, it’s not really explained why he is the way he was. The film opens with a 55-year-old Brown shooting off a rifle at an insurance seminar, then getting into a wild chase with local police before being arrested and eventually serving time in prison. Yet, there is no rationale for why someone who has been such a successful musician and businessman would behave that way. Get On Up focuses on Brown’s relationship with two key men in his life: best friend and fellow singer Bobby Byrd (Ellis), and his manager, Ben Bart (Aykroyd). Byrd discovered Brown’s talent in 1949 when his gospel group was singing in a prison where he was serving time for

stealing a suit. Byrd arranged for James’ release, and eventually they formed The Famous Flames. Byrd readily accepted the fact that Brown was meant to be the front man, and that it was Bryd’s fate to be in the background. The beleaguered pal spends most of the film being an apologist for Brown’s boorish behavior, until “JB” turns on him. I was beginning to wonder when “Wind Beneath My Wings” would begin playing in the background. Ben Bart may have been the only person that James Brown truly revered. Although he only possessed a seventh grade education, Brown had great business instincts, and unlike a lot of other musicians of his era, he held onto his wealth. Aykroyd smartly plays Bart as one part accountant, one part promoter, and one part psychologist. All movies biographical take artistic license with historical fact; Brown’s chance meeting with fellow Georgia rocker Little Richard comes off as a Hollywood cliché. While we learn a lot about the Famous Flames, we never hear a peep about Brown’s immensely successful 1970s backing combo, Fred Wesley & the JBs. The film does showcase most of Brown’s best-known hits, including “I Got You (I Feel Good),” “Sex Machine,” “Cold Sweat,” “It’s A Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World,” and “Say It Loud, Say It Proud,” but his last big hit and the one most recognizable to Gen Xers, “Living In America” from one of the Rocky films, is not included. Brown’s first true pop chart breakthrough hit was 1965's “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag.” This film is a mixed bag at best. – Lloyd Carroll
Techno Beat I know you’ve been waiting for it; so here is the newest edition of TechnoBeat, packed with all the newest things going on in the EDM world. Now, you may have heard of Keys N Krates, the three-piece live electronic group taking new and creative sounds and performing them live to make their own masterpieces. Their single “Dum Dee Dum” is close to 100K downloads; and thankfully for us, they are also releasing a new EP on September 23 entitled “Every Nite”. And, to go with it, they are launching a massive North American fall tour with Gladiator to help accompany them. Keys N Krates are a unique dynamic as they incorporate the electronic sound that is popular today with live performance, leaving so much room for improvisation; something that is not always evident with electronic music artists today. Last week I had the opportunity to get to see Adventure Club at Governor’s Island. He was accompanied by Dallas K, Hunter Siegel, Delta Heavy, and Lestat. Unfortunately, I will not be able to go as in depth as I would have liked to. Upon arriving at the ferry at around 5:30, there were some difficulties in getting to the island. The line was very long, the ferries were only being half filled, and they also stopped running for an extended period of time. Total time to get from the back of the line onto Governor’s Island: 4 hours. I arrived on the island just as Adventure Club was finishing up the opening to their set. This was disappointing as I was very much looking forward to this event. The organizers need to do some serious rethinking about events on Governor’s Island and how to handle to amount of people traveling there all at one time. With that aside, Adventure Club performed to meet expectations. They played a festival type set with a good amount of house and a ton of their own music, something I like about groups like Adventure Club. It’s always impressive when a DJ has enough of their own songs that they can take up half of a set playing them. Although the speakers weren’t quite powerful enough to give the full “live concert effect” from beyond half way back in the crowd, I still enjoyed the experience

I’ve also seen Adventure Club’s mixing abilities take off quickly, as they seamlessly transition between songs and also include all types of genres in their performances and online mixes. If they aren’t already considered one of the top DJ groups in the business, they are definitely a group that everyone should be on the lookout for. Electric Zoo time is approaching quickly and this year the festival is back and is going to be bigger than ever. The festival is also adding a sixth stage which will be vinyl only. This is a smart move as there are plenty of DJs who aren’t a fan of the whole “using a computer to DJ” and like the sound and feel of vinyl. Well, now there is a section for them at this year’s festival. Electric Zoo is also hosting a slew of artists who have never performed at Electric Zoo before. These artists include Jack U, Carnage, Figure, Borgeous, Brillz, Candyland, Caked Up, Clockwork, Heroes x Villians, MAKJ, Loudpvck, New World Sound, TJR, Pegboard Nerds, and around 50 more artists. Having been to Electric Zoo for the past two years, I have formed a bond with the event as it is close to home and is literally like being in another world. I believe this is achieved through the act of being on an island. You are isolated and away from anything else. All that is around you is EDM and good vibes with good people. Some festivals seem too immersed in everyday life. Electric Zoo is a place where you can escape, both physically and mentally. As my internship has begun to consume my time, I haven’t had a chance to search up much new music recently; and for that I am sorry. However, a good place to start is on Soundcloud. Follow as many big EDM accounts as you can (such as thissongissick or house. edm) and you will soon have at least 30-40 new songs in your feed every day. Steven here were a pair of “gotcha!” A. Smith moments in sports media last month. One involved former NFL head coach and current NBC “Football Night In America” host Tony Dungy, while the other put the spotlight on Hollis native and ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith. Dungy made headlines in the sports pages when he said that he would not have drafted University of Missouri defensive end Michael Sam, who currently is hoping to be the first self-admitted active gay player in the National Football League. The gut reaction was to label the genial Dungy a homophobe, but that would be an incorrect assumption. Dungy made it clear that he believed Sam’s sexuality should have no bearing on his football career; the former coach was concerned that the media hoopla surrounding Sam would detract a team from focusing on what needed to be done for the upcoming season. Head coaches take training camp seriously, and want nothing but football on the minds of both players and media. My guess is that Dungy wouldn’t have drafted a player who might have been dating, say, Lady Gaga for the same reason. Smith took a lot of heat for his remarks concerning Baltimore Ravens’ running back Ray Rice, who was suspended for a mere two games for allegedly physically attacking his wife. The initial hysteria was that Smith, on his ESPN morning debate show “First Take,” believed that Rice’s wife bore some of the responsibility for her husband’s disgraceful behavior. He merely stated that it’s not a good idea for either party in a heated argument to escalate things, and that it is wise to try to look for a way, if possible, to try to restore calm. The best of the PGA Tour will make their lone appearance in the area when The Barclays returns the Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, New Jersey, from August 21 through 25. Since this is the start of the PGA Tour’s playoff series, the Barclays is an invitational as opposed to an open format. It’s to be seen whether Tiger Woods, who has had an awful 2014, will qualify for the Barclays. The best deal in sports takes place at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center from August 18 through 22, as many of the world’s best tennis players will compete to earn wildcard berths into the U.S. Open that gets underway a week later. he Great Ganus: Gwen Gwendolyn “Gwen” Ganus Ganus of Brooklyn won her second LIGBT title in one of the closest shootouts in LIGBT history on July 4 at AMF Babylon Lanes. Ganus struck out in the final frame to defeat second place finisher George Williams of Jamaica, 244236. Ganus' second LIGBT title was worth $2,000, while Williams earned $1,000 for his runner-up position. Finishing third and earning $700 was Justin Kampf of Levittown with a 224; fourth place went to Gary Paulsen of Massapequa with a 215 worth $400. The AMF Babylon tournament drew a two-day crowd of 174, advanced 34 bowlers to the finals, and paid $7,810. The high series of the tournament was shot by Joe Freeman of Ridgewood,with a 787 series in the Sunday 1 pm squad. Here’s another suggestion: How about offering Mets players the same deal after the season if they finish with a winning record? I believe in incentives! The New York Yankees were smart to pick up lefty pitcher Chris Capuano for the stretch drive. Capuano, a Duke alum, is one of the smartest guys in baseball and has always been a capable starter. The problem is that the last teams that he played for, the Red Sox and Rockies, used him out of the bullpen. The Yankees will not repeat that mistake. It was announced during Hall of Fame weekend
that retired players will only have 10 years instead of 15 to be voted into the Hall of Fame before election depends on the Veterans Committee. The percentage of votes to get enshrined in Cooperstown remains at a very difficult 75 percent. My guess is that the decaying Baseball Writers Association of America wants to try to instill fear into current top players, as well as recent retirees such as Mike Piazza, by reducing the eligibility clock. Piazza should have been a first-time inductee, as he is the best offensive catcher of all time as well as being highly regarded by starting pitchers for calling a smart game. He never tested positive for PEDs and was not named in the Mitchell Report; nor was he asked to testify before Congress the way Roger Clemens and Mark McGwire were. A number of BBWAA members have taken “a guilty until proven innocent” mentality by refusing to vote for him. My take is that there is another agenda operating here: Piazza always treated writers from smaller outlets with the same courtesy and respect that he would to the media big boys in the clubhouse. I remember watching steam coming out of the ears of the New York Post’s Joel Sherman when he was watching Piazza schmoozing with me and it was clear that he was not rushing me from his locker. Sherman, and his fellow BBWAA curmudgeon, the New York Daily News’ Bill Madden, carry a lot of weight in the BBWAA, and these guys never forget a perceived slight, in my opinion. live After Five is one of Patchogue's longstanding musical traditions, now celebrating its 13th year. The free street fair has recently been overhauled by a new chairman, James Skidmore of Brickhouse Brewery. Since Skidmore has taken over, the festival has been moved to Thursday, which has attracted the largest crowds the festival has seen since its inception.

“Alive After Five is a celebration of music, community and the arts,” said Skidmore. “We wanted to change the tone of the fair and emphasize its urban feel, which Patchogue has always had.” In addition to seven stages of local music, there are art and dance installments which include African Babatta dancing, blacksmith demonstrations, hoola hoop performances, and more. Food Music Festival trucks provide fairgoers with even more choices in addition to the already established restaurants throughout Patchogue. This year, Rick's Rising Stars will film episodes from its own stage, and The School Of Rock will be performing and showcasing its hands-on approach to music. These “events within events” are a hallmark of the new, revamped Alive After Five. “We are sowing the seeds for much bigger plans in the future,” said Skidmore. There are plans in the works to expand the fair and include more nationally touring acts in addition to its already varied lineup of music. Patchogue is quickly becoming the focal point of a burgeoning music scene, and Alive After Five is the perfect way to experience all the town has to offer. The next installments are

Back In The Saddle Aerosmith arrived at Jones Beach after playing 17 dates in Europe on its ”Let Rock Rule Tour.” The bad boys from Boston base their musical currency on 25 gold records, and on this night they were not deviating from the formula that has resurrected their success. Since the rock lifestyle nearly stripped the group of their fame while they were too intoxicated to notice, the unit now seems healthy and whole, with no intention of losing the reigns a second time. Lead singer Steven Tyler appeared with a Freddie Mercury mustache and more scarves than Elvis would likely give away on an entire tour. The first notes of “Back In the Saddle” brought many in the expectant crowd to their feet, and there they would remain for the duration of the show. Tyler and Perry worked a pirate’s gangplank walkway that reached out well into the orchestra seats; all of Tyler’s trademark moves were broadcast on three high definition screens looming above the stage. An Artist Whose Fans Grew With Him: Boz Scaggs NYCB Theatre at Westbury
It was easy to tell this was going to be a particularly good night; early on during this packed NYCB Theatre concert, veteran rock/R&B/ blues performer Boz Scaggs announced he was going to perform songs from his newest album ... and the crowd cheered. We’ve long bemoaned Long Island’s music fans for being stuck in 1971, since, oh, 1971, but on this evening the stilltasty Scaggs began the show with a blues song and ended it with one, and the assembled throng greeted tunes they’d never heard with as much enthuiasm as they did for the AM classics “Lido Shuffle” and “Lowdown.” Indeed, this genteel, music-loving crowd may have been a high-water mark for area fans in that they actually came to listen instead of simply waiting for the hits, and didn’t use other songs as bathroom breaks. Of course, it was easy to be enthralled with Scaggs’ vocals (he sounds exactly the same as he did during his heyday despite his 69 years on the planet) as well as his smooth demeanor onstage. In fact, he may better than during his hit-making years; he’s proving to be an adept blues guitarist and an artist with a unique touch at covering classic R&B (his take on “Rainy Night In Georgia,” make famous by Brook Benton, offered a new, fresh arrangement). All in all, a truly memorable night where Scaggs’ most loyal fans proved they’ve matured every bit as well as their favorite artist. – Bob Smith

and “Rag Doll,” Perry took over lead vocals on “Freedom Fighter,” the most interesting song of the evening, displaying insight and some risk. This was the only deviation from the formula of tried and true hits; lyrics to the anti-war anthem were displayed on the screens above the stage, and harkened back to the protest era of the Richard Nixon administration, the period when this band released its first album. The band played 18 songs in all, culminating in encores of “Dream On” and “Sweet Emotion.” For the first encore, a white piano was rolled onto the walkway, with Tyler playing and singing. Perry climbed atop the piano, playing along masterfully, defying his age. By the time the last notes of “Sweet Emotion” were completed, the crowd had did not have to rise for an ovation – it had never once sat down. The evening opened with Slash and Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators continuing their “World On Fire” tour; the album of the same name was released on July 15. Slash delved into the Guns N’ Roses catalog four times, highlighted by “Sweet Child O’ Mine” and “Paradise City.” – Bob Wilson

The Bruce Of Windsor Project Readying For A Third Run Of Rock
Who: We recently caught up with Bruce David Loeffert, the leader of Long Island’s The Bruce Of Windsor Project. When we last heard from Loeffert several years back, he had just released his second album – but now is back and gearing up to work on his third rock album. The Artist & His Sound: “Over the past year or so, things have been moving along sporadically with the production of the third CD, which will be called Atlantic Waves,” reported Loeffert. “As the saying goes, ‘man makes plans and God laughs.' Well, I can attest from experience that age-old statement is true. During the course of the last two years, I have started working on the project with hopes of going into the studio to record but untimely events have occurred that have set things back. This I guess is what some call the blues or paying your dues or down right bad luck. In any case you have to keep your eyes on the prize and not lose faith in what you believe. In the past year or so I had some major loses within my immediate family and two very close friends who have died. These types of events occur in all of our lives and it takes time to come to terms with it. “Despite the untimely events and ongoing changes in life, I have still managed to make progress in several areas. For instance, last year I created videos for all 25 songs that appear on the first two CDs,

The pictures correlate with the words of the songs which helps the viewer to understand what the song is about and the time frame of my life which the song depicts as well as the people and places in the timeline. Comedy Review: Long Island Comedy Festival Madison Theater, Molloy College Rockville Centre
Just when fans might have believed that Paul Anthony's Long Island Comedy Festival may have peaked, along comes one of the best local comedy concerts in years. The July 19 show at this beautifully renovated small theater may have been a high water mark in Long Island Comedy's annual traveling summer series, as every standup star on the bill exceeded expecations. And we mean everybody – which includes the ever-genial emcee and host (and LIC founder) Paul Anthony, whose 15-minute opener may have been his strongest performance in the series yet. Pleasingly riffing on everything from comically oversized men's watches to the frustrating necessity of airport rest rooms, Anthony's short set was the perfect opener for the five seasoned standup pros that followed. Shockingly, the first up, Chris Davis, had the big Saturday night crowd rolling in the aisles during his set, which touched on not wanting his baby to read, his relationships with women, and other whimsical topics. Likewise, closer Maria Walsh – riding a hot streak during the past 18 months, performing everywhere from locally to Las Vegas – proved she's a funny force to be reckoned with, flooring the crowd with uproarious observations on marriage, travel, sex, and a lot more. Sassy and smart, Walsh is a blonde ball of fire. Impressionist Eric Haft, veteran Bill McCarty, and wry slice-of-life master Tom Daddario scored big as well. This summer’s Long Island Comedy Festival still has shows set for August 16 in Medford, and on August 22 and 23 in Port Jefferson. They're inexpensive and enjoyable, so take it from us – Go. The final performance of the Monty Python comedy troupe was simulcast to a selected group of U.S. theaters on this date; a handful of area cinemas were able to offer comedy history as it happened live from London's O2 Arena. While the feed of the show reminded us that these “live as they happen” presentations still contain the worst aspects of what used to be called “closed circuit events” – bad, cutting inand-out sound, not-quite HD visuals, and an overall dull look – we were still glad we attended. Right to the end, the all-intheir-70s Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam, John Cleese, and Michael Palin (as well as actress Carol Cleveland) acted like the silly-yet-educated fools they still are, and made us feel all warm and fuzzy one last time. If anyone can be thanked for keeping the legacy of Python alive for the past 20 years, it's Idle. From the Broadway smash Spamalot to other Pythonesque, New York City-area shows he directed and produced, to this lavish, Broadway-like musical/comedy production, he's been the driving force, egging the others into keeping the flame alive. His light touch as the director of this extravaganza was just right, and as the evening ended with the five members locked arm-in-arm basking in the roars of the crowd; the poignancy of the moment was worth the price of admission for anyone who ever loved the original Monty Python's Flying Circus BBC series and their subsequent movies. Sure, this was a“greatest hits” night – the parrot sketch, “The Lumberjack Song,” “Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life,” many of animator Gilliam's classic cartoons, the argument clinic, Spam and Vikings at the diner. It was two and one-half hours of nostalgia, absolutely, and, yes, the aging Pythons at times seemed to have trouble remembering their lines. But all in all, it felt like a visit from old best friends, the ones who can still crack you up even though you haven't seen them for years. Yet, after 45 years, it still seems as if Monty Python is leaving us just a bit prematurely; the world needs a laugh more than ever these days – and if you ever loved comedy, those weren't just tears of laughter running down your cheeks at this show's end. – Bob Smith

riders as part of his annual ride for charity on Sunday, September 7 at the Town of Hempstead Lido Beach Park. This will be the 12th year that Snider has sponsored his popular ride, and the second year that the event will focus on fighting hunger on Long Island to benefit Long Island Cares, Inc., the regional food bank and hunger assistance organization founded by the late Harry Chapin in 1980. Last year, more than 1,500 riders and guests participated in Snider's ride, which is the largest of its kind in Long Island. "There are more than 320,000 Long Islanders in need of emergency food and community support services because of reductions in critical programs like food stamps, unemployment and other safety net supports," said Snider. "I've seen the work of Long Island Cares first hand and know how important their services are for families, children, and others who rely upon the assistance of charitable organizations just to get by. We're very fortunate that Harry Chapin had the vision to establish this great organization and food bank thirty-four years ago, and it has grown to meet the changing needs of our communities with some very creative programs like their satellite programs in Freeport and Lindenhurst, along with their mobile outreach units for our veterans, seniors, and the homeless. Deep Purple – Rockin' To Westbury: Deep Purple, fresh off a European tour to support its 19th studio album, NOW What?!, is now stateside for a North American trek. The tour kicked off August 4 in Scottsdale, Arizona, and will touch down locally on August 26 at The NYCB Theatre at Westbury (tickets: livenation.com or thetheatreatwestbury.com). NOW What?! was originally released in North America in April 2013 via earMusic/Eagle Rock Entertainment. The album marked the next chapter in the band’s 40-plus year career, blending the classic 70s Deep Purple spirit with modern production and a progressive mindset. during a brief stint replacing Randy Bachman in Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Completing the recording took Dean to Raleigh NC, the current city of choice of drummer Matt Frenette, where they recorded the last three tracks in a friend's home studio. "We practically lived at Little Mountain Studios for six months (referring to the Lovin Every Minute album sessions), but it's a new world. I do everything on my laptop now. Way better!" enthuses Dean. "These are tracks we'd recorded over the years, and we just decided to complete them and release the album to show our appreciation to the fans who have supported us all this time." The title came from Dean's idea to involve the band's fans in choosing the name of the album in a popular vote on Facebook, where the choices were first winnowed down to 10, decided by the most "likes." The band then chose Unfinished Business.

In anticipation of their return to North America, Deep Purple will release their next single to radio: “All The Time In The World.” Loverboy – Seven Is The Charm: Unfinished Business seems an apt title for the new collection of recordings from Loverboy: 10 songs patiently waiting, some for decades, to be completed. The recordings range from "Come Undone," written by Paul Dean while living in Toronto 40 years ago, long before he met vocalist Mike Reno and joined forces to form the group, to the Chuck Berry-influenced "Doin' It the Hard Way," featuring Ken "Spider" Sinnaeve on bass. The song was penned by Dean
"No question, that was the one. We put the song titles up and explained that this album was 40 years in the making," says Dean. "It was a fun thing. Some of the titles they came up with were hilarious, but perhaps a little inappropriate for Wal-Mart." Paul's initial idea – to give away the album for free – was nixed, but he's still encouraging fans to stream it on Spotify, Rdio, Beats Music, or Deezer. "I have no problem with them doing that," he lauged. Making the new album was inspired by the band's positive experience recording three new songs, two of them with their original engineer Bob Rock producing, at Bryan Adams' Warehouse Studios in Vancouver, for 2012's Rock 'n' Roll Revival. "It was, as usual, a great experience,” said Dean. “Bob's a master."

Quadrophenia: Summer is, for me, all about pop culture books, great for beach side or just outside, andthis summer there are many to choose from. My current fave is Inside The Making Of Britain's Greatest Youth Film - Quadrophenia: A Way Of Life (whew!) by Simon Wells, a U.K. import from the always busy team at Countdown Books. Of course, this film had a greater impact over there in England than it did in America, as it obviously reflected the "mods versus rockers" thing which was totally Brit-centric. Still, the film has a dedicated and growing fan following in the U.S., and The Who's masterpiece was much more than a cult hit. The book will delight anyone with interest in this period of time as well as Anglophiles that obsess over all things U.K. The film stars, among others, Sting and Toyah, and if you have never seen it, what else can I say but: Netflix! The book is as in depth as could possibly be, and you can easily find it online. Calling all Who fans! White Trash: A book that I owned for years has just been given a deluxe, uncut, hardcover release, and it's still causing shockwaves. White Trash by Christopher Makos, is a photographic collection of people, places, and things from the 1970s downtown New York City underground scene, as Debbie Harry and Divine rub elbows with leather gear and S&M imagery. In some ways, with all that has since transpired, it almost seems quaint, and in a very good way; sort of a look back at the birth of everything we take for granted now. In its current form, it's a perfect coffee table book

to flip your friends out with, so if you'd like to remember, or if you're newly discovering that scene, White Trash is the perfect late summer mind-blower from the fab folks at Glitterati. Showtime For Bowie: David Bowie makes an appearance in White Trash, and he's also appearing on Showtime in a documentary film called David Bowie: Five Years, a study of the "glitter into disco into mainstream Top 40" journey of "The Thin White Duke." As a longtime Bowie fan who has sort of strayed from the path in recent times, this brings it all back for me – how he literally was the man who sold the world; who sold us on new trends and styles that he personified; and cleared the path for glam, punk, new wave, electronic, and every mode of pop with the exceptions of hip hop and country (thank goodness). The Showtime documentary is a must-see, so don't miss it. Real Oldies: WALK-AM, 1370 on your dial, is now the "real oldies channel," playing 50s, 60s, and very early 70s tunes ... and I'm in heaven, as they go deep into tunes that haven't been played since they were hits. "Tall Paul" by Annette Funicello? The Outsiders' recording of "Respectable"? Long-forgotten tracks by Mitch Ryder, Petula Clark, The Yardbirds, and The Pretty Things? There is static, which is so very AM radio, the signal is only good (by me) in the daytime, and there are some time blocks purchased

Despite all that, with my AM portable radio by my side (and in my dashboard), I'm having a lovely time bopping to The Dave Clark 5, The Kinks, The Raiders, and Gary Lewis & The Playboys, plus the obvious Beatles, Stones, and Motown songs you'd expect. Yeah, bay-bee!
